I was thinking while watching last nights EVA on the ISS, has anyone here ever tried to intercept the space suit communications during EVA's? I'm not sure what the output of the transmitters are, but with a good system you still should be able to hear 100 - 200mw. Probably a weird digital transmission mode so you still wouldn't be able to tell was they were saying, but that's why there is NasaTV.

The satellite drop down tab and the letters at the bottom right are out on sync. Placing the mouse on a letter bottom right does not correspond to the letter under the satellite tab. Suggestions? Hi Nick. This seems to happen when names or numbers for satellites change in the keps file. How do I add the Moon Keps to SatPC32. I have the Keps in Word Pad but no luck in adding them. Thanks Charlie

The 1530z 16Feb pass of HO-68 over North America had more packet on it than I've ever heard before. I'm not sure that the BBS is working properly but the satellite is sending a lot of packets in response to user requests. Maybe those who are using the BBS can comment on how it's working. Hi! Later this week, I will have an AMSAT table at the Yuma (Arizona) Hamfest & Emergency Preparedness Show: http://www.yumahamfest.org/ on Friday and Saturday, 19-20 February 2010. The hamfest is at the Yuma County Fairgrounds - east of downtown Yuma, south of the I-8 freeway, and just north of Yuma International Airport and Marine Corps Air Station Yuma: http://www.yumahamfest.org/directions.html Last year's event drew hams from all over Arizona and southern California, along with the "snowbird" population spending their wintertime in the Yuma area and along the nearby Colorado River. Many Mexican hams from the neighboring Mexican states of Baja California and Sonora also visited the hamfest and the AMSAT table I had there last year. During these two days, I will have on-air demonstrations using various satellites (AO-51, SO-50, AO-27, VO-52, possibly AO-7 in mode B) using my callsign WD9EWK if I am able to get away from the table and go outside the main hall at the hamfest. Feedback on Netbooks with Satellite Software

Hi all on the BB, I am planning to buy a Netbook computer for my trip overseas next month. I am looking for feedback on any problems running satellite programs (Orbitron, SatPC32, etc.) with a netbook pc that has the Windows 7 Starter operating system. Also any information using different Atom Processor's (N270, N280, N450,etc.) I would rather be down level with XP and a 32 bit machine if anyone has had major problems with the 64 bit (N450) and/or Windows 7. It has served mariners and aviators well for over 60 years. Pete was the grandson of former President Herbert Hoover. Pete's W6ZH call was inherited from his father who served as ARRL President; Pete's original call was W6APW. He was AMSAT Life Member #65. In the 1970's, Pete and Bill Eitel (W6UF) saw that AMSAT and amateur satellites were a significant wave of amateur radio's future. In addition to making substantial contributions, they worked with the ARRL to form the ARRL Foundation in 1976. Beginning in 1978 Pete served on the ARRL Long Range Planning Committee. I remember the hospitality Pete and his wife Meridith showed to Jan King (W3GET) and me on several occasions when we dropped by his home in San Marino to discuss AMSAT's future. Pete was always very active in the American Red Cross. It is with much sadness that AMSAT notes the passing on Feb.4 of Herbert "Pete" Hoover III, W6ZH at his home in San Marino, CA. Pete was the grandson of former President Herbert Hoover. Pete's W6ZH call was inherited from his father who served as ARRL President; Pete's original call was W6APW. He was AMSAT Life Member #65. In the 1970's, Pete and Bill Eitel (W6UF) saw that AMSAT and amateur satellites were a significant wave of amateur radio's future. In addition to making substantial contributions, they worked with the ARRL to form the ARRL Foundation in 1976. Beginning in 1978 Pete served on the ARRL Long Range Planning Committee. I remember the hospitality Pete and his wife Meridith showed to Jan King (W3GET) and me on several occasions when we dropped by his home in San Marino to discuss AMSAT's future. Pete was always very active in the American Red Cross. When the Pacsat concept was being developed, Harold Price (NK6K) and I called on Pete at the Hoover Foundation offices to discuss the concept of a store-and-forward messaging satellite to provide medical communications to a remote area. ND9M Road Trip Update #10

We had to make the choice between driving 110 miles in 90 minutes through the west Texas mountains to get to DL79 or cut our losses and just get to DM70. It was tempting, but we opted to only do DM70 and back-burner DL79 until after we leave Big Bend which will probably be on Wednesday. We'll be camping in DL88, but it meets up with DL89 less than a mile away, so I'll be on from the line at various times from tomorrow afternoon (Sunday) through Tuesday. I won't be on from the line every pass, but there'll be plenty of opportunities to get both grids over the next few days, including on the linear birds. For any 6M ops, I'll have the FT897D fired up and will be checking for band openings in between sat passes. If there are any trees of any height, I might put up a 40M dipole and keep an ear open on 7182 kc (+/-). Wisp Keying MixW direct via virtual connector

I was trying to work with a pair of virtual ports to connect Wisp and Mixw! The com pair failed to connect these software!!! I found the virtual connector device at Virtual Serial port Emulator program (VSPE) can do this task nicely . Wisp send packet to MixW and Mixw send it to soundcard and keying the Rig via existing port. So the Tx line is working well between Wisp--> MixW--> Soundcard--> Rig The next step is to test the Rx line between Rig--> Soundcard--> MixW--> Wisp. So with out Hardware TNC could it works?!! ND9M Road Trip Update #9

We were supposed to leave for DL88 today, but my XYL, Cori, over-exerted herself yesterday and needs to mend today. She'll be raring to go tomorrow. Cori's driven all but about 30 of the nearly 5000 miles we've racked up on this trip. We're only about half way, so she deserves a day to kick back. My apologies to those expecting to pick up the new ones in the Texas panhandle today. On the brighter side, this actually helps our operating sked as today's AO27, SO50, and AO51 passes allowed very little margin for delays of any kind if we expected to operate from the DM71/DM81 line as well as DL79/DM70 with any decent footprint coverage. All that said, I might be on for the AO27 pass that rises at 13/1923Z, but I'm figuring on being on from DM71/DM81 on that bird's next pass at 13/2101Z. After that, we should be in DM80 by the time SO50 shows up at 14/2224Z. AO51's AOS here immediately follows SO50's LOS, so although AO51 will be at a fairly low elevation here (13 degrees), I'll hit that one too. Then, an hour later, we should be sitting on the DL79/DM70 line for another SO50/AO51 tandem pass. >From there, we'll overnight in Alpine, TX (DM80) and should arrive at Big Bend Nat'l Park (DL88) on sunday where we'll camp for two or three days. Our campsite in DL88 is just a mile from the DL89 line, so while we're there, I'll operate from that line at various times during our stay. Once we leave Big Bend, I'll be on from DM80, DM90, and several others in south TX as we drive to Brownsville, TX, in EL15; that sked will be posted later. Orlando Hamcation Table & Demos (N4EH)

ND9M Road Trip Update #8

Today is scheduled as a day off for us while we do tourist stuff locally. But depending on available time later in the afternoon, I may run back out to the DM72 / DM82 line for either or both of the SO50 and AO51 passes; SO50 rises here at 11/2307Z and AO51 pops up at 11/2357Z. We'll head out tomorrow (Friday) and expect to be at the DM71 / DM81 line for the AO27 passes that rise at 12/1950Z (east) and 12/2130Z (west). The ambitious part will be getting to the DL79 / DM70 line for the AO51 pass at 12/2316Z which is quickly followed a few minutes later by SO50. Road conditions permitting, we'll get to the line; otherwise, we'll stop in either DM80 or DM70 for the back-to-back passes. If the latter is what evolves, we'll stop in DL79 or on the DL79 / DM70 line for the AO51 pass at 13/0055Z. But it's only a 20-degree pass for that area, so it won't be all that productive. We need to get down to Big Bend (DL88) the next day, so we'll figure out when we can come back to DL79 to give those who need that grid a reasonable shot at getting it. 73, Jim, ND9M / VQ9JC Carlsbad, NM / DM72

I must agree with Johnathan that surface mount is not tough at all with reasonable components...and to recommend considering the SoftRock SDR boards for an IF receiver/display. I've no experience or info concerning the Soft66 boards. I'd had essentially no experience with surface mount before I ordered a SoftRock kit for 10.7 IF (was $12 then, now maybe 15 or so). So I bought a surface mount practice kit for 7 bucks, which came with a number of different kinds of surface mount components one might need to solder to a board, as well as a small working flasher circuit. Turns out, with some bent tweezers, flux in a tube, small solder and small soldering iron tip (mine was already small enough)-all fairly cheap on the net, it was absolutely no sweat, even fun, and maybe actually easier than through-hole stuff. I used magnifier lenses that fit on my bifocals, and an old, cheap magnifier lens/light combo at times, and had a great time. It's easier, in that one need never strip wire, trim leads, or turn the board over to solder the other side-nice. Then I tried the SoftRock board, and had zero problems. A cheap plastic 30x handheld microscope is good for checking questionable joints and connections. I wish someone had told me all this years ago... I turned 60 years old last week, and I shake like everyone else; rest your hand or hands on something and go to it. I'd recommend getting one of these practice boards, then decide (available from sources like Ramsey kits, etc.). The SoftRock worked well, was easy to build, and now provides me with a 96 kHz panadapter display with my old R7000 receiver, and various free software. I use mine to monitor the 10 meter beacon band, and it has provided a great deal of interesting insight into 10 meter propagation, since one can "see" essentially the entire domestic beacon band at once. With a better soundcard, it will provide a 192 KHz display; transponder downlinks await... This is not a project however small, for first-time builders, but excellent instructions are available on the net for it, the board is only 2 1/2 inches by 1 inch or less in size, and only some of the parts are surface mount. The fellow who sells these kits offers them intermittently, and the IF board is actually just a few parts different item from his 40 meter receiver board. I'd be interested in hearing about the SDR66. 'Just my experience. The other experience was watching the Shuttle launch from the Nasa Causeway on Monday morning...it was absolutely awesome, exceeded my expectations, and was well-worth traveling from Louisiana with my family to witness. The amount of light produced by the boosters was just incredible, and seemed to illuminate the entire sky, clouds and earth. The SDO launched this morning...delayed by the shuttle delay, then winds....almost got to see two launches, but I'll never complain! 73, Steve W5ZA Shreveport, La.

He said that the instructions were pretty poor... the parts list and schematic didn't always match up and he had to do a fair amount of head-scratching (and I think bang-head-on-desk-ing) to get it built. Ed, Congrats, it seems like you are in business if you heard the bird down to the horizon. HO-68 is louder, in some cases much louder, than most of the other sats, so check some others. If you can copy SO-50 to the horizon, then leave your antenna alone, it's working great. I measured a maximum of 20w directly at the antenna, and Elk claims a gain of 6.6 dbd on 2m, which would mean an ERP of 90 watts. AO-51 Signal Strength Post Flip

It has been about a month now since AO-51 was commanded back to its normal orientation. But many are reporting that they are having more trouble hearing it now than they did before the first re-orientation. It does seem to me that some stations that usually hear very well are not hearing that well now. This morning's pass (9Feb2010 1045z) of AO-51 seemed to bear that out. Minor clarification, Loran-A was used from WW-2 until it was turned off in the 1980's I believe. The current system, Loran-C was in commercial use starting in the late 70's. When Loran-C was used for returning to a previously stored waypoint, it's accuracy was almost as good as current GPS and better than the early "dithered" commercial GPS service. I read that article, and when I got to the last of it and he mentioned that he was using a pre-amp for working the FM birds, I wondered out loud: "Why???" We're working '27, '50, and '51 with HTs and meager antenna improvements. Better yet, build a tape measure Yagi - you can realize great gain with about six bucks of parts. Note that I haven't mentioned, "Buy a pre-amp" anywhere. I was considering building one of those antennas mentioned in QST last month - until I read that he was using a pre-amp. In a series of small ceremonies, the U.S. Coast Guard on Monday shut down Loran-C, a navigation and timing system that has guided mariners and aviators since World War II. The death blow came last May when President Obama called the system obsolete, saying it is no longer needed in an age in which Global Positioning System devices are nearly ubiquitous in cars, planes and boats. Killing Loran-C will save the government $190 million over five years, Obama said. But supporters of Loran -- including the man known as "the father of GPS" -- say the nation's increasing reliance on GPS paradoxically has increased the importance of maintaining Loran as a backup. At 3 p.m. Monday, the U.S. Coast Guard turned off Loran signals at 19 of the 24 Loran stations. Signals remain at five stations because of agreements with Russia and Canada, but the Coast Guard expects those stations to be decommissioned by June after the United States receives verification that those countries have been notified of the change. Aloha All In general, Hawaii is a very quiet place. Most passes of AO-51 fly by with no usage. Accordingly, signal strength and quality are usually quite discernable (assuming no anomalous QRM) when QSOs do occur. The initial reorientation of AO-51 was very apparent here. In general, the bird appeared to have less signal strength and more fades. It was, SO-50 like. Since reorientation, it is my impression that the signal strength has improved significantly but there remain some fades; especially at lower elevations. In discussions with KG6NUB and others, the feeling is that the bird is still in some kind of "recovery mode." To me, "51" now seems like its old "self." Fades are becoming less prevalent. Finally, my knowledge regarding orientation, reliability and stability of OSCAR satellites is extremely limited. The concept of "recovery" may not even be applicable. Dave, I would be suspicious of the construction. I can get a few minutes of good copy from AO-51 on a high pass with just a rubber duck on an HT. If you do get a preamp, the run between the antenna and the preamp is critical, so if possible keep it short and use good coax. Ed seems to be having success with 4' of RG-58U, but generally the use of any RG-58U at 70cm is not a good idea. Here's a quick summary of my results with various antennas: * HT and rubber duck or other antenna mounted directly on the HT - success only at high elevations * HT and Arrow or Elk antenna, no preamp - success from horizon to horizon, if no trees or other obstructions * base rig and dual band omnidirectional ground plane, no preamp, 40' of RG-213U - success on most birds only when elevation is above 25-35 degrees * base rig and dual band omnidirectional ground plane, ARR preamp, 40' of RG-213U - success on most birds when elevation is above 15 degrees * base rig and Elk antenna on 12' pole at 15 degrees fixed elevation, azimuth rotation with old TV antenna rotor, ARR preamp, 70' coax run (my current setup) - full success from horizon to horizon on all birds, except in directions where blocked by trees or roof. The Elk is $135 shipped and the used rotor was $25, and this combo is by far the most effective I have used. My community has antenna restrictions, but so far no one has complained about the little 2' long Elk. The Elk could be replaced with a homebrew Cheap Yagi or tape measure yagi, which can be built for $10. I am not aware of anyone who is able to work the sats at low elevations with any type of omnidirectional antenna, even with the best preamp. Tracking - End-stop Problem

Hi, A problem that I've had for many years is how to track when the satellite's azimuth crosses across the rotator's end-stop, ie. when the azimuth changes from 0 to 359 degrees. My rotator turns between 0 and 450 degrees, so it should be possible to use angles between 360 and 450 to overcome a sudden transition from 0 to 360 degrees. As the pass data is available within the tracking program, it should be feasible to deal with the problem in the program. Do any tracking programs include this feature? A possible solution would be to use a small PIC between the computer and tracker, which could modify the commanded azimuth. I'm using a Yaseu 5500, LVB tracker, Sat_Explorer tracking program and WinXP. Any help, suggestions or comments would be most welcome. 73 Clive G3CWV Hitchin, North Hertfordshire, UK

ND9M Road Trip Update #6

The snowfall we received in southern Colorado last night wasn't as bad as what was predicted; we had about 4 inches overall instead of 10. Assuming southeastern New Mexico is in good "snow shape" tomorrow, we should be able to get to the DM84 / DM85 line for the AO27 pass which rises at 09/1937Z. From there, we'll head a bit southeast and be in DM74 for the next AO27 pass at 09/2116Z. Finally, AO51 should find us on the DM73 / DM83 line when it comes up at 09/2336Z. Wednesday, 10 Feb, will be a short grid day for us as we'll pull into Carlsbad, but I'll be on the DM72 / DM82 line at least for the AO27 pass at 10/2047Z; not sure about the AO51 passes later that afternoon. If -120 dbm for a 12 db SINAD is considered the minimum usable signal, what is the likely signal level required to indicate an S1 reading (at 435 MHz) on an FT-847 with the internal pre-amplifier turned on? The Yaesu manual quotes 0.2 micro volts for a 12 db SINAD. How many S points is likely to be? -- Regards, Phil

I've worked the birds using the Arrow antenna and an HT, and that works okay, but I secretly dream about working them from the shack instead of sitting in the back yard, and big pointable antennas are a no-no in my neighborhood. Question for anyone out there: I just built the parasitic Lindy from the Feb 2010 QST. What kind of performance (on receive) should I expect from it during, say, an AO-51 pass (max EL 83 deg)? I had my Kenwood TH-F6a HT connected directly to it (only a few feet of RG-8X coax to the antenna) with no preamp, and I only had good copy for a moment here and there. HO68 Pass

I copied two stations on SSB at 435.733 for the second half of pass #732, 10:30-10:50 utc. They did not pass call signs while I listened. I hadn't reprogrammed he FT-847 for SSB so my uplink was on the wrong freq. but Rx signals were "arm-chair" until elevation < 10 deg. Not too bad for omni-directional antennas. I looked up the freq. info after the pass and discovered why I didn't hear my self (uplinking at 145.825). I now have a separate satellite memory setup for the SSB freq. of HO68 (435.740Rx/145.950Tx). The next pass is for 0020-0105, Feb. 9. My window will be 0052-0109utc when HO-38 is mainly over arctic Canada and no footprint for lower-48. It is a ascending pass so I will have about ten min of coverage (0055-0105). Flex is fully aware that the price of the V/U + the 5000 will limit the sales of the V/U. For those already owning the 5000, the V/U together as two sixty watt units with high performance and fully capable of full duplex operation, and is CHEAPER than the same system assembled from DEMI units. Now, you have to already have the 5000 to plug it in so it is limited to the 5000. The Flex equipment is fully capable of supporting external digital programs and CAT. Both of these are supported via "virtual connections". A pseudo sound card is set up and other programs connect to the pseudo sound card to deliver audio to/from the radio. The same thing for CAT control: a pseudo com port pair is set up, one at the radio and one at the controlling program, to support control of the radio via CAT commands. The radio has its own set of commands but implements Kenwood commands as well. I have the USB version of the LVB tracker and the latest model Kenpro (5400A) with the relay control lines brought out to the plug. The LVB plugs into that plug directly. This is good. I should have remembered this because Brooks developed the KCT Tracker and Tuner with the interface to Quiktrak at the beginning of our friendship. I used both to command the Microsat's in the first days, I should have remembered and should have realized that the plugin interface probably became a standard when Kenpro did and Yaesu maintained it in the B model. I don't have experience with 3rd party controllers but the position reporting is fundamentally different. Instead of potentiometers indicating the present az/el, there are just pulses indicating when the motors have traveled a degree. So a little more work is associated with keeping track of the heading, and I haven't heard of a compatible 3rd party controller, but I don't foresee modifying one to do so as particularly challenging. Can anyone who is using this software and eqso tell me what are you entering for your AO-51 contacts in Band and Mode? I tried 2, 2M and SAT J in Band and tried SAT, FM and FM (SAT) in Mode to no avail. Maybe I need to enable a field or something? I have read the whole manual from the website and it doesn't really talk about entering satellite contacts. Thanks for any help, I really want to get my whole log uploaded to eqso. lvbtracker (or other) and AlfaSpid rotors?

The Alfa Spid price list http://alfaradio.ca/docs/AlfaSpid_Price_June15_2009.pdf indicates that the az/el rotor alone is about $600 (CAD) cheaper than the rotor with controller. I understand that this controller is a very nice piece of kit, and many are quite pleased with, for instance, its mouse interface. However, that additional charge moves the purchase from the 'maybe one day' to the 'no way Jose' column. So I'm wondering if anyone has experience with third-party controllers to operate the Alfa Spid rotors. AO-27 Event Timing

About a month ago the events that turn AO-27 on and off seemed to be timed so it would be on as it passed over North America. More recently, for the passes I check (more than 10 degrees here in NC), it seems like according to schedule on www.ao27.org, the "ON" time is when the bird has pretty much finished its pass. For example, right now at 1858, the footprint of AO-27 neatly covers much of the US and Canada, yet according to the website the next "ON" event is at 1906, one minute before I lose the satellite completely. Is this intentional or "just the way it is?" Does it slowly cycle the ON time so it is ON for passes in different parts of the world? 73, Rowland K4XD

The listings on the AO-27 website are not correct at this time.... this happens every once in a while, where the website gets out-of-sync with the satellite for some reason (it's about 7 minutes behind right now). If you use the Java schedule lister instead, written by my son, you will get accurate listings. The lister is available to download at http://sites.google.com/site/ao27satellitescheduler. Many users here on the BB will vouch for its accuracy. FO-29 working well

I heard myself very well on FO-29 this morning even when it was a good distance out -- but didn't hear anyone else. I'm not using much power and pretty basic antennas so it seems to me the bird is working well. If you've left it off your standard list of satellite passes to check out, try putting it back on. LVB Tracker and Kenpro

Thanks to all who answered my (incomplete) email. It is clear to me now that my Kenpro 5400-A, which has an external control on the back, can be made to work with the LVB tracker. After the 2 feet of snow melts, I will be refurbishing the rotator where needed. I am hoping this and the antenna deployment coincides with the arrival of my U/V full duplex 60w on both bands, transverter block arrives from Flex and I get back on satellites again. 73's to all and thanks again for the answers. After long eclipse periods caused a negative power budget on FO-29 in early November, 2009 which took it off the air temp- orarily the command team switched the satellite from continuous operation to scheduled operations. This allows the command team to monitor the state of the battery charge aboard the spacecraft and adjust operations as required. Since the last commanded power up of the analog transponder on January 27, 2010 the command team has received reports worldwide which indicate that FO-29 has been able maintain continuos oper- ation. The power budget aboard the spacecraft is improving as the eclipse periods decrease. If the power budget decreases too much the satellite will auto- matically power down. The JARL command team requests telemetry reports (either direct or posted via the amsat-bb) from stations that may have data from January 27 to January 28. Additionally, if you find the transponder is off during a scheduled ON period please report this to the command team as well. JARL places no restrictions on the use of FO-29 during scheduled operation periods except to remind satellite ground stations to transmit with as low as uplink transmitter power as possible. My directional satellite array is not quite QRV; needs cables connected in shack. Despite EasyComm 2's similarities to GS-232, modifications to Predict's source code haven't been successful in controlling the RAS rotator; are all the AlfaSpid users here on Nova / SatPC32 / Orbitron? I gave Alfa Radio a call yesterday and they said that the controller appears to flicker when viewed under florescent lighting, so once I check that under a good old incandescent it should be fine. I also picked up one of MFJ's variable voltage supplies, so it is a simple matter to observe how the controller does not enjoy lower voltages. The flicking I'm talking about is much faster and subtle; the multiplexing theory from earlier is a good one. Ultimately I will run off of a stepped-down AC, probably with a variac thrown in. I've always wanted the ability to throttle rotations; the start-stop motion has always irked me. Makes the long yagis shake. I'm looking forward to putting a small (~6ft) dish on this thing, but right now the focus is a yagi array (4x 440CP42UG, 2x 2MCP22). I don't have the heavy-duty version. Hi John, Are you using this rotor system for an array of antennas or a big dish? If a dish, how large? I noticed their rotors at Visalia last year. But didn't ask the reps their thoughts about turning a 12 to 16 foot dish. I know there are two versions, I think one is heavy duty. Not sure which one you are using. The 'Toolbox' Icon that can be found on Orbitron's "Main" tab, leads to a further set of tabs. One of them is called "Miscellaneous". The bottom right hand panel of the Miscellaneous tab allows you to set the directory that will be used for element sets. If you also tick the box marked "Personal TLE directory", it will automatically store Spacetrack, Celestrak, element sets there too rather than under the Orbitron directory in Windows/Program Files. The directory you choose can be anywhere you choose such as under "My Documents" or the equivalent in later Windows versions. Bob Christy

Has anyone modified Predict export GS-232 as opposed to EasyComm 2? I recently purchased an AlfaSpid RAS-1 rotator from Hy-Gain. The controller accepts either GS-232 or AlfaSpid's own protocol. Additionally, has anyone noticed the digits on the controller display flickering? Its just a nuisance, but surprising since I'm feeding it from a lead acid battery so there can't be any ripple or rectification. 73, Ryan, KB1LKI

Sat688 Rotor Controller Interface

I will be making a board order and building a batch of the Sat688 Rotor Controllers for use and distribution among the teachers who will participate in this summer's Teachers Institute-2 Space in Dayton, Ohio. The Sat688 is a no-frills, inexpensive interface to be used between SatPC32 or Nova and the Yaesu G5500 or G5400 rotor. The interface is either USB or serial. ND9M Road Trip Update #5

We were minutes away from resuming our trip today (Friday) when I tested the theory against pouring a cup of coffee (with creamer and sugar of course) on to the keyboard of the laptop; the machine got 8 to 10 ounces center mass. Luckily for me, my stepson here in the Denver area has his own IT engineering and service company, and a quick 911 call to him got full and immediate attention. He and I got everything drained out and cleaned up, and the laptop is back up and running. (All log contacts and photos from the last two weeks' portable ops had already been backed up on a thumb drive as well as a second laptop, so other than pride, I wouldn't have lost anything except for the day's travel that got eaten up.) But now we're ready to hit the road again tomorrow afternoon (with the coffee safely somewhere else...). Our route tomorrow (Saturday) will take us initially to the DN80/DM89 line, hopefully for the AO27 pass that rises here at about 06/1925Z. I'll definitely be on during the next AO27 pass at 06/2103Z either from that line (if I miss the previous pass from there) or the DM78/DM79 line for AO51 at 06/2357Z. While southbound into Texas, I'll operate from all grids on both sides of the 104W longitude line. There have been several requests for contacts with the DM7x and DM8 grids; those grids look to be particularly in demand. As we head south; our next day off will be in the vicinity of Carlsbad Caverns in DM72. After that, we'll move over to Big Bend Nat'l Park alongside the Rio Grande River in DL88 where we'll camp for two or three days. Focus will continue on afternoon AO27 and AO51 passes.
