This problem, in my experience, was caused by Vista's User Account Control not allowing Orbitron to write any new data to the hard drive. There are two ways to solve this: 1. Run Orbitron as Administrator (right click on the icon -> Run as Administrator) 2. Disable User Account Control. This can be done by going to the Control Panel, then User Accounts, and somewhere in there (I do not remember exactly since all my boxes run Windows 7 now) there is a checkbox that will allow you to turn UAC off. Reboot the computer after disabling UAC for the changes to take effect. Hope this helps. 73, Sam KC2LRC

Orbitron help

Hi: Some one helped me before with an Orbitron problem but I lost his e- mail address. The problem is I got a new laptop with Vista Everything works except it won,t download the keps on the internet. The strange part it says it is doing the download but it never shows the update on the sat /Orb info on the program. When I first bring the program up on my computer it says to update because they are over 30 days old. So I say yes to up date but it never gets to the program. I have worked it this for quite awhile with no success. Jerry w0sat

Hi Jonas, If you have something capable of generating 422.967 MHz you should be able to easily use the third harmonic. Remember that the original frequency shift at 422 is also tripled, so reduce the shift on the original signal accordingly. Hello Andras and all I feel your pain! I am the other end of the footprint (CN87wk- Seattle Wa. ) looking into Northern Europe for dx contacts. Unfortunately Andras we are about 8775Km apart, which is beyond the footprint. There are not that many VE stations on AO7. There are a few VE7's I chat with occasionally, probably still beyond your range. I talk with Mika fairly regularly, I am still attempting to contact RN1NW, UA1OEJ, G1WPR,PA1TNO, 2E1EUB, and a few others. There are some KL7's that are on occasionally, KL7XJ, AL1F. We must remember, "if this were easy, everyone would be doing it"! Of course everyone has talked with Joe, K3SZGH hihi. There are several east coast stations within your footprint. As far as a qso between you and I, we will have to wait for the next HEO. Gentlemen, I was calling CQ Canada and CQ Alaska again during two AO-7. I had been doing it many many times. Please visit http://www.ha5mrc.hu/hamsat/satas.html where you can see a screenshot of DK1TB's SatPC32 which shows very well how does AO-7 footprint buries almost the whole territory of Canada when the old bird is flying above Greenland and I can still hear myself. Once upon a time a Canadian fellow answered my call but the question arises: Are the only one station in the whole country which uses AO-7 time to time? As for the USA I met K3SZH twice. At the beginning I always use CW and make Qs with those regulars like UA9CS, OH8MBN, 9A2EY, F2IL, RW9SL, UN7CY and Polish and other European stations as well. First time on HO68

I was on HO68 for the first time last night, and had a blast. Congrats to the satellite team for a very well operating satellite-the downlink signal was very strong here. I look forward to getting on this one again. What was all of the packet I was hearing on it? FSK transmitter at 1268.9MHz

My Fellow Radioamateurs, In the last couple of years our group here at DTU in Denmark have been working hard to realize the communication system for our next cubesat satellite DTUsat-2. We have developed a full duplex system which has a 38400bps MSK-modulated downlink as well as CW beacon at 2401.835MHz (220mW output power), and a 9600bps FSK-modulated uplink at 1268.9MHz. However, we have just completed the uplink section, but have as of yet no means of conducting a bit error test of the system. In short we have no means of actually producing a 9600 bps FSK-modulated signal at 1268.9MHz to test the uplink system with, and it will probably be another 4-6month before our GNU software defined radio system to do so is completed. As such, I would like to ask if anyone in the Amsat community has equipment capable of producing such a signal, or could come up with an idea as to how we conduct this test in a quick-n-dirty fashion? AO-51 L/U mode

Well, tried to work AO-51 tonight during my 2232utc pass, but was unsuccessful. I did hear WO3T (FN00) during the pass and was the only one I heard. Sounds like this mode (once you over come the transmit problems) will be a great quiet mode to work. I didn't really think I'd get into the bird with 10 watts and a discone antenna but thought I'd try. Looks like its time to get a good 1.2ghz antenna and get it installed when I get my arrays put back up. Anyways, thought I'd let Carmen know he wasn't whistling in the wind and that some one did hear him. Sounds good. Really need to get the uplink antenna going here. Reid, W4UPD

FO-29 Status

JARL announced the status of FO-29 on Jan 29th at JARL WEB in Japanese. This is English translation. ------------------------------------------- The present conditions (January 29, 2010) of FUJI3 (FO-29) FUJI3(FO-29) has been stopped the continuous operation and moved to planed schedule operation because it can not have enough battery charge current from beginning of November. The command of JTA (an analog transponder) ON has been sent for a confirmation examination from the control station at 11:33 on January 27th(UTC). JH1EKH/1, JR8LWY, VK5HI have reported to us that "FO-29 still works" . There is a possibility that FO-29 has been working consecutively after we sent transponder ON command on January 27. It is thought that the electricity income and expenditure is improved by the decrease of the shade rate, and the transponder is working continuously. If someone has information of telemetry or other working status related from January 27th 11:30(UTC) to 28th 19:20(UTC), Please send it to JARL technical section. In addition, when FO-29 battery power is lower than setting value, a transmitter becomes OFF automatically by UVC. If you find the transponder is getting off, please send the information of transponder off time and date to JARL technical section. FS - 23cm M2 antenna

I have an M2 23CM22EZ antenna for sale, 16dbd gain, 28dB front to back. It will take 600 watts (!), and survive 100mph winds, overall length is 63 inches which is about 5 and bit feet in old money. And that was where the problem was; 5 and a bit feet was just too long for my available space so I ended up buying one of Bob's (W7LRD) most excellent helicals. So its never been in the air, just gathering dust in my garage. Looking at HRO, it seems that maybe M2 have superseded this model with the 23CM22EZA which retails for a whopping $185! HO-68 Not Heard ?

Hi, I noticed the beacon info showed for 5 cycles before switch on ( 18h45 UTC) that temp was 21C . FM and DIGITAL was active normal for 13 mins 23 sec after switch on. There after beacon still on and reported xponder on but silent and temp was now 25 and 26C ? Wonder if this was a "tempreture" output shutdown ? 73 andre zs2bk

Visit with ND9M @ Arrow Antenna Factory

Hello all, I just returned from a Visit to the Arrow Factory here in Cheyenne where I live. Silly me, so close by and I have never visited them once before. The purpose of the visit was to meet ND9M (Jim) + Lovely wife and Chauffer to have an eyeball QSO and watch him operate on AO-27 from the parking lot as well as take a tour of the plant.. What impressed me most at Arrow was all of the machinery is made and designed by themselves, and trust me it is pretty impressive as well as mostly microprocessor controlled. Anyone can make an antenna, but to design the machinery to make the antenna parts is a skill few possess. They build a quality product and stand behind their product... I did ask why no corner reflectors any more and was informed a lot of hams have trouble putting them together... I guess it does pay to read the instructions. As the appropriate time for AO-27 approached we all sashayed into the parking lot where in a very short period of time Jim had the equipment set up and soon ND9M was waving his handheld Arrow dual band antenna knowingly in the SSWerly skies... Soon, contest style, he was making contact after contact. He and his wife have been on the road for some time activating grid squares, those of you who keep up on this sort of thing and count grids should give him an ATTA BOY for his efforts. As the bird disappeared over the horizon it was time to pack up and put things away, I was allowed to wind up the headset cord and a coax... So I can I participated in the event... It was fun thanks Jim for the call and if you get back this way again, plan on some more time here so I can pick your brain a little bit. Having owned a FT-847 since 1998, I can. For 1200-baud packet it merely requires connecting a std TNC (I use a KPC-3+) to the 6-pin mini-Din packet connector (plug available from many Radio Shacks) on the back of the radio. Page-17 in the operators manual shows how. You can also connect 9600-baud audio-output from pin-6. Back in the AO-40 days I used Mix-W2 as a sw modem and connected to pin-6 for audio into the computer soundcard. 38k4 requires some radio modifications to tap wide bw ckts inside the FT-847. I never played with 38k4. Setting modulation for Packet without a deviation meter is harder (pin-1 on the radio). I use my FT-817 for packet, now. Nice thing is the connector on the radio is pin-compatible with the FT-847, so I could use the same TNC/radio cable. The FT-817 has packet mode available in menu so you can preset your mod levels by mode and by channel. Note: I may have my new "Lindy's" operational later today. Hooking up the preamp power and T/R relays wiring in the shack. Probably give AO-51 a try for my initial "return" to satellites. I also have my M2-436CP42, LY2345 (1.2-GHz Loop Yagi), 33-inch dish (2.4-GHz Rx), and a M2-2m7 yagi for hard-core satellite work (they also require wiring in the shack to be QRV). All those antennas have T/R relays, preamps and 432, 1268 have amps at the tower. So I am (about to be) ready for P3E! I Hope other station sharing with their downloaded Dir info! I'm still confused !! Hi Fellows;.....First, I want to thank all who replied to my query. I got lots of suggestions regarding a Free Terminal program. For Andy W5ACM: Thanks for sending me the two Hyper Term files, I had previously tried that method with out success. Think Win7 64 would just not play nice with it. However, Kevin W5ACM sent me a link to TERMINAL. Thanks Kevin. http://sites.google.com/site/braypp/terminal It booted and talked to my LVB Tracker "out of the box", even the default comm stuff was set correctly. ie; I was able to calibrate the LVB with the rotator in no time. Not sure if I could program the EPROM if I would of had to. When I get time I plan to look at the program called PUTTY as some of you suggested. From the looks of it, it is more of a full featured program. Again, thanks to all Charlie K3VDB

Hi, Just something I noticed on the 1845 Ho-68 pass. For 2 days I have been trying to download the directory without success. I uploaded 3 files now, but still couldn't get the directory. I then switched to voice mode with PL=67 Hz, and then tried again and the directory came screaming down. Very odd indeed. To make sure everyone understands this list, this is HO-68 transmitting. Not any uplink stations. As you see, all listed below are TO stations. It is responding to BBS request. A lot of the transmission are saying the BBS directory is empty. So, when sharing a frequency with voice, the TNC on the satellite buffers the data and does a burst of buffered data when frequency is clear. But I wonder if the messages are lost when the BBS is switched off? Perhaps there is a timer to remove them after 5 days if it's left running. Your post made me wonder if you also could run the Virtual XP mode with your Win 7 64 bit as I do and help your problem I work my old programs that way. Not always easy but I use DOSBOX also I do not run a terminal emulator however. Hello -- I've been playing around with spectran and satellite CW beacons as a means of testing the effectiveness of various antennas. At the top of the screen, spectran provides a running indication of the frequency of the loudest signal and its volume in dB. Does anyone know of an application by which this sort of information might be captured for later analysis? Hi! My presentation and demo for the Mesa Community College Amateur Radio Club (KM7CC) yesterday was a good way to spend the afternoon. This is a new club, and the club has tried to showcase different parts of amateur radio available to those with the entry-level Technician license. Satellite operating is definitely one of those things, and I was invited to give a presentation to the club. As part of that, I also gave them an on-air demonstration after the presentation on an AO-27 pass. The club is a small club, but there was a good turnout for a Saturday afternoon on the MCC campus. A couple of those in attendance already had their licenses, and a couple of others are in the process of getting their licenses. I had my assortment of portable equipment and antennas laid out on a table, showing what I use to work the satellites. After the presentation, we went outside to prepare for the AO-27 pass just after 2100 UTC. A few days ago, I asked if I could use the club's KM7CC callsign for the AO-27 demonstration. I was told I could. As we were going outside to prepare for this pass, I was told that the callsign had not been used on the air. As we set up a table for my equipment, I answered questions from the audience. Then, the main event... Once AO-27 started its 20-second packet burst, a couple of people were able to hear the downlink on their HTs as I heard it on my radio. I was able to make a call in the first moment of the pass, and make a few quick contacts. This was, of course, a busy pass covering most of North America. Jim ND9M was also on from the Colorado/Wyoming state line (grids DN80 and DN81), and I listened for part of the pass as stations worked ND9M from his rare location. I was able to log ND9M and a couple more QSOs before the end of the 7-minute repeater time. As all of this was going on, the audience listened and enjoyed hearing the club callsign on the air. KM7CC made 9 QSOs with stations across the continental USA and Mexico. Clint K6LCS even called me from the Palm Springs hamfest in California that he was at, and ND9M gave me a call as well. I apologize to those who were unsuccessfully trying to make a QSO with KM7CC on that pass. Club members were paying attention to the exchanges with the grid locators, and several of them had Icom grid maps I brought to the meeting to make sense of those locators. I will mail QSL cards to the 9 stations I worked. There's no need to send me - or the club - SASEs for the QSL cards. If you'd like to send a QSL card for a QSO with KM7CC, please mail the card to the address on QRZ.com for KM7CC. DN41 ANYONE?

I am thinking about making a treck over to DN41 for the 2259-2310 UTC AO-51 pass this afternoon which is just a couple miles to the east of me. Is anyone interested in that grid? I could set up on the DN31/DN41 line. The satelite will rise to 16 degrees to the east of me and I will have a very short window due to the Wasatch range of the Rocky Mountains to the east. It has been brought to my attention that several individuals have had difficulties in accessing/obtaining this file from my FTP site due to the TCP wrappers that I have installed. These wrappers were used to reduced the number of intrusions that were occurring. However, they aslo limit access based on specific criteria that not everyone is able to accommodate. A great crowd was on hand at the annual Desert RATS HamFest in Palm Springs. It really makes me wonder, though, if this hobby can sustain the 2- and 3-day conventions that are held here. I mean, parking to this event was free, and so was admission. Lunch was only five bucks. No, there were not twenty break-out sessions ... but attendees were treated to several "bigger" dealers' wares, some local concerns, a badge maker, and an outdoor swap meet. Things might be changing out here in California after this year's PACIFICON and ARRL SW Division Convention. We'll see ... On a brighter note, THANK YOU to Patrick in Arizona, and the gentlemen in Baton Rouge and Texas who we worked via AO-27 at a little after 1PM Pacific Standard Time this afternoon. In response to a question of, "How far do you usually reach?" from the group, I had just finished telling them that for AO-51, SO-50, and AO-27, the software programs' footprints have always been a little "conservative" - as we then contacted Louisiana and Texas. FT 736 Help

Hi All, I'm just setting up my station ready for satellite operation - antenna arrives next week, so I went out and bought a second hand FT736 today. It looks to be in excellent condition, tx and rx on 2 and 70 seems to be fine, but I'm getting errors whilst trying to use the SAT switch and use it in duplex mode. I have read the manual thouroughly and still get the same errors. I set the SAT switch to Rx and try to enter a frequency / mode, but the display says ERROR and I can' clear it. The manual says to press REV but that doesnt work. Have I got a faulty rig or I am doing somethiong wrong? HELP. Peter G8KEK AMSAT-UK 6897

It sure is nice to have FO-29 back online, after being off for awhile. The 0415 utc 2/29 pass provided my first QSO with VE4AMU and this last pass of 1602 utc provided a contact with Larry, WA6DIR. This last pass was out over the Pacific. (I missed the 1416 utc pass; was still in bed). I hope it stays active, but do know it is in a test phase. John W6ZKH

ND9M Road Trip Update #3

Yesterday's snowfall in SW Kansas complicated road conditions and especially safety so I opted to hold off getting to the DM98/EM08 line until today (Friday). I'll operate from that line during the AO27 pass that starts at about 29/1950Z. Depending on accessibiltiy, I may get to the quad grid point and add DM99/EM09. >From there, we'll head north to Nebraska and put out DM99/EM09 during the AO51 pass at 2236Z and then either put out the DN90/EN00 grid line or the DM99/EM09/DN90/EN09 quad field point on the AO51 pass starting at 30/0014Z. We have to focus on getting to Denver now, so time permitting, Saturday's game plan will be to hit the DN91/EN01 line on AO27 at 30/1922Z, stop again in DN91 for the second AO27 pass at 2101Z, and then the DN80/DN81 grid line on AO51 at 30/2335. After that, we'll be in Denver (DN70) and Cheyenne (DN71) with family for a few days before heading south through NM and into TX. 73 for now, Jim, ND9M / VQ9JC Wekeeney, KS / EM09

Thank you for reading this. I'm in the process of setting up my satellite station after a five year break and my UHF aerial doesn't seem to be performing as well as I expect it should. I always suspected that it's performance was below par. AO-51, for instance, is received no better than strength 3 on my FT-847. The aerial is a twelve element design (twelve elements in each plane) by DK7ZB and is without a doubt the best 435MHz aerial that I have ever built. The extra twelve elements have been removed for testing purposes and is currently hand held and rotated as accurately as possible. I suspect that the poor gain might be due to the matching system because I was always unsure of the exact physical length of parallel quarter wave matching cable. To determine my exact uplink frequency in order to be translated by AO-7 at 145.940 MHz +/- at the very AOS moment when the bird comes to me from South to North during an ascending orbit it was also very important for me this night because in the following days I plan to contact on skedule at 145.940 +/- MHz the friend ZS6BB, Pierre in KG43EU But what was really happening this night ? You are right ! The distance into free space between AO-7 and FO-29 was about 1500 km at 06:15 UTC and both satellites where in mutual covisibility so that my 145.940 MHz CW signal that was translated by AO-7 was received by FO-29 and retranslated by FO-29 in 435.840 MHz at 06:15 UTC when you received my CW signal in Pretoria KG44EE through two satellites ! In more details at 06.15 UTC the subsatellite point (SSP) of AO7 was over Nigeria at 8.557° Latitude North and 10.095° Longitude Est and his footprint was not completely covering ZS land while the SSP of FO-29 was over Zaire at 6.482° Latitude South and Longitude 16.500° Est but his footprint was fully including ZS land where you was able to receive me in KG44EE The above demonstrates that when the footprints of two satellites about overlaps a two way QSO between two satellites is possible particularly on CW provided that the uplink and downlink frequency bands are the same and one station transmit to one satellite in 70 cm listening in 2 meters while the other one transmit to the other satellite in 2 meters listening in 70 cm Unfortunately this is not the case betwen AO-7 and FO-29 because the 70 cm bands are different 435.800 to 435.900 MHz for FO-29 and 432.125 to 432.175 MHz for AO-7 so that only one way two satellite link is possible as you Hal experienced because the same 2 meters band is in common between both satellites. The above reception of my signal by you via FO-29 also demontrates that actually FO-29 is working very well after a very long QRT because it was so sensitive to receive my signal in 2 meters via AO-7 and retranslate it into 70 cm with sufficient power to be received by you in 70 cm in Pretoria South Africa By the way since you in KG44EE are very close to Pierre in KG43EU I am confident the at the end of testing and try with Pierre via AO-7 I can try a QSO via AO-7 as well with you and I will informe you about if you agree. This satellite holds some promise of a decent and doable microwave technical challenge. It will be possible to use our 5760 Transverters for a RX only application, maybe with minor tweaking. The LO is 5616 MHz, with the RF of 5840 MHz, the IF is 224 MHz, right in the US 222 MHz band. Maybe with a bigger dish, and a very low noise figure preamplifier, optimized at 5840 MHz, we could be in the UNITEC-1 deep space telemetry collection business. The DEMI A32 LO with an external 10 MHz reference, can add the frequency stability needed. Or maybe Steve, N5AC, can preprogramm the A32 for a 5,840-145= 5,695 / 5 = 1,139.0 MHz A reasonable challenge this winter morning, as I sip my lukewarm tea at the dining room table. But more questions are raised: 1. Keplerian elements are great for satellites, but once UNITEC1 enters deep space, what do we use to calculate and predict the path for our accurate tracking ? 2. Hello Andy, Thanks for the comment. It is always nice to see an orginal photo to compare what came down (from ISS) in the SSTV mode. Sadly I could not get the full image because the ISS was close to LOS. Hi! I will be giving a presentation for the Mesa Community College Amateur Radio Club (KM7CC): http://km7cc.com/ on Saturday, 30 January, at approximately 12.30pm (1930 UTC). The meeting will be in the TC50 building on the southeast corner of the Mesa Community College campus: http://www.mc.maricopa.edu/campus_map.pdf which is along Dobson Road between Southern Avenue and the Superstition (US-60) freeway in Mesa AZ. The campus, which is also the site of an annual hamfest every December, is in grid DM43bj. Following the presentation, I will have a demonstration using the AO-27 satellite just after 2.00pm (2100 UTC) outside the TC50 building. For the AO-27 demonstration, I will use the club's callsign KM7CC. After the demonstration, all stations making contacts with KM7CC on that pass will receive QSL cards for those contacts. Genesat-1 Operational?

The AMSAT SATS page says that GENESAT-1 is operational It is not listed on D Carr's web page as being reported by anyone. We listended for it with a class of students today and heard nothing at around 11:15 EST. Google finds nothing but reports of OPERATIONAL, but then none of them are newer than January 08. If anyone else can confirm that it is non operational, then I'll inform the AMSAT web site guru to remove its operational status. Thanks Bob, WB4APR

I worked graveyard shift, so had it on auopilot. But all I am getting is a screen of static.. Antenna is tracking fine. 145.800 FM Using MMSSTV. Any ideas what I may be doing wrong ? Is it transmitting over the east coast of the US? Randy - N2CUA

Thanks Drew, I kind of thought that. I also answered some of my other questions once I got off my back end and investigated the SQF files. There are files for Radio 1 and two so it depends which one I want which and edit the files accordingly. The only thing now is when I get errors (usually for doing strange things), the errors are displayed in German. Other than the fact I assumed I did something stupid, I can't make out the error. It appears to be a memory management error I think. No big deal. You know Tim. You are one of those people that get under some of our skins. If you read "all" of my email, you note I stated that the FT-817 worked fine under HRD. So I do take offense at your comments. Both radios work fine under HRD. I'm started to play with SatPC32 and since its radio setups are not quite as intuit as others, I have found that the SQF files are why I am having some of the problems. The German error message is obviously a problem with SatPC32ISS and looks to be some sort of memory problem but can't read German. I have to use Task Manager to close it. I feel your pain as I have been unemployed for 27 months. A simple comment of "it sounds like an SQF file problem" would have suffice.
