Hello, On the weekend, during one of the XW-1/HO-68 passes schedulle for change the "beacon/TLM only" to "beacon/TLM + FM repeater" mode, It was clear the temporarily interruption of TLM data flow for their quickly return from the beggining of the TLM frame with new status, exactly on the time combined. So CE3RR was well heard in FM downlink. My neophyte question is: The satellite was over Chile that time. Do we need an earth ground station in South America, inside the footprint of the satellite, to send the operational changing command to the bird for HO-68 real time answer to the request or only the Chinese controler sent the command, for satellite store the information and, at appropriated time, far way from Asian footprint, HO-68 active the ordered? Another Bradford DUH! Moment

I am preachin' to the choir here with this post, I am sure. But since Southern California was under STORMWATCH again last night (we're expecting at least 0.03" of precipitation), I decided to build one of those cheap "tape measure 2M Yagi" antennas from plans seen all over the Web. I mean, I mention them during my satellite presentations as an affordable entry into high-gain ... I have a couple links on my Work-Sat Web site for plans ... I can see in theory where they should work - but I've never built one myself. So I stuck the PVC pipes together ... soldered the matching element ... straightened it all out, and took it outside for a test. OH MY GAWD. This is something that EVERY ham should do. What a dramatic increase in a handheld's performance a couple dollars' worth of stuff can accomplish! I heard a NOAA WX station (technically, out of range for this 2M Yagi) in San Diego that I have never heard from the house before. Every repeater of the six I immediately hit were received more clearly than with even the best of HT antennas ... and as good or better than my Cushcraft A148-3S (retailing for sixty bucks). Hello, The satellite AO-7, is not active, I could not listen to the Beacon or my return in mode A and mode B today at 19:55 UTC. Looking at the list of website logs and Oscar satellite status, the information is that the satellite was turned off after 13:00 UTC. AO-51 and AO-7 status

AO-51 is almost back to normal. The normal repeater is running at 400mw, and the telemetry downlink at 620mw. After everything is reloaded and double checked, we'll shift the majority of power over to the repeater and turn the L uplink for the PBBS back on. Thank you to those who sent reports and telemetry over the last few days; it was helpful. Please understand if we don't get a chance to answer and thank you all individually. I also had a discussion with the primary AO-7 command station this evening, and he will begin to investigate what has happened to AO-7. There is a possibility that it simply glitched into another mode and is stuck there until it is commanded back, or until eclipses return. AO-7 is still solidly in continuous illumination at present. Be prepared, there may be much less palatable scenarios as well. This satellite is 35 years old, one of the oldest functional satellites anywhere, and to say we have had her on borrowed time is an understatement. Please post all observations of activity on the downlinks to amsat-bb; we really only need to know if you did hear it. Check 435.100 along with the transponder downlinks and beacons. wisp32, ic-821h and kct/t setup ??

It's been a long time since i needed help with Wisp setup. I am trying to setup wisp to work with the icom 821h. I am using the Kansas City tracker and tuner. The tracker part works ok..the tuner does not. The radio is set at 1200baud and address is 4ch. The kct/t is set for ttl output on port A. In the station setup under rotators: radio is ic821 port is A set for 1200,8,n,1 bands are set...rx 144 430...tx 144 430 I did not calibrate the rotors clicked ok exit station setup using ao-51 9k6 at 435.150 for satellite click on run this pass...screen comes up tnc blinks 3 times,it's good to go...antennas track ok. frequencies do not change on the radio. read the rr.ini file and radio is in sat mode before wisp is run. Do you have to run "calibrate rotors" in the station setup/rotators box? Do you have te edit the rr.ini file? Any suggestions or help appreciated as always Bruce R Brown ke0lx

Installing/running WISP in Vista 64 bit problem

Hi, I got this question, and not having a 64 bit OS, don't have a solid answer. PKWARE is still around, and does have according to their web site a 64 bit version, though it may not be freeware. Any help I can pass on about whether there is a way to do this, and particularly whether WISP will run at all on a 64 bit machine? Alan WA4SCA >I have been unable to install WISP on my "Vista >64bit" computer. It keeps looking for a file it can't find. I think it is >PKUNZIP. EXE. >PKZIP & PKUNZIP have been around for a long time. I guess they don't work >on the 64bit OS.

I copied the HO-68 beacon tonight during pass 90. Here is what I noted: 0153 at 16 degrees cw sig was at 795 0155 at 20 degrees cw sig was at 792.8 0156 at 22 degrees cw sig was at 790 0158 at 20 degrees sig was at 787.32 0159 at 16 degrees sig was at 785.3 0201 at 12 degrees sig was at 784. Hello All, Just heard RS-22's CW telemetry for 2009/12/22 00:30 UTC. RS22 UBS - 139 137 on board voltage/10v IBS - 20 20 on board current mA USUN - 146 0 solar cell voltage ISUN - 78 0 solar cell current mA ITXA - 0 0 ITXB - 0 0 TTXA - 111 111 TTXB - 109 109 TNAP - 110 110 TCTR - 110 110 TSBA - 107 108 TSBB 88 104 125 MODB 145 145 145 MODC 6 6 6 MTX 35 35 - MRX 34 34 - Using details from Mike DK3WN's site to crunch the data, I come up with the following. USUN and ISUN give the the solar panel outputs as producing 14.6v at 78mA working during one frame and nothing during the next. I suppose this indicates a faulty solar panel. Hi, I was unable to open the uplink with my Yaesu FT-847. The PL tone was set 67.0 Hz but unable to open the uplink channel. During the pass I tryed the following. - Checked Subtone.SQF file twice SatPC32 (XW-1,67.0,$3F,1) - Checked Doppler.SQF (XW-1,435675,145825,FM,FM,NOR,0,0,Repeater-BBS) - Restarted SatPC32 - Switched of and on the Yaesu FT-847 - Did a manual setup via menu option 12 for the tone frequentie - Used FMN on the uplink Nothing worked :( There where only three or four stations active during this pass and that makes me wonder if I was the only one with tone problems? I did receive some BBS Packets: BJ1SA-12>BBSTAT>UI,C,F0: Open BJ1SA-12:0 BJ1SA-12>BBSTAT>UI,C,F0: Open BJ1SA-12:0 Maybe beter luck next time 73's PE0SAT

Hello All, PE0SAT earlier mentioned that he could not work over the XW1 FM repeater. I noticed the same, I couldn't either via uplink 145.825Mhz (tone 67hz). Was there something chanced? December 21, 2009 To All RADIO AMATEURS BID: $ANS-355.01 AMSAT-NA OSCAR Number Coordinator Bill Tynan, W3XO has informed Alan Kung, BA1DU, Amateur Satellite Project Manager and Chief Executive Officer of AMSAT-China that XW-1 is now designated as Hope OSCAR 68, or HO-68. Bill wrote, "The satellite was launched successfully 15 December from the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center of China, on a CZ-4C rocket. Ama- teur Radio Operators around the world have received beacon signals from XW-1." Bill continues, "Further, I have been informed that XW-1 has been coor- dinated through IARU Amateur Satellite Frequency Coordination Panel. As XW in Chinese means 'hope', it had been requested that this word be used as the prefix for the new OSCAR number. Therefore, with the above infor- mation and the authority vested in me by the AMSAT-NA President, I hereby designate this latest amateur radio satellite as Hope Oscar 68 or HO-68." Congratulations to AMSAT-China. XW-1 QSO and packet attempt

I was happy to make a QSO on the FM repeater of XW-1 tonight during the 0210utc 21 Dec 2009 pass, and tried some packet too. Signals were S9 or better (didn't really look carefully). Audio was loud and clear on all stations I heard. I was able to get connected to the BBS, but unable to upload a small file. A directory request was given a -2 error a few times, too. So, it will take some tweaking, but it's working! Bravo, Mark L. Hammond [N8MH]

XW-1 North America FM 21Dec2009 0205z Audio

The XW-1 pass over North America at 0205z was interesting. When the bird first came up over the horizon, it seemed to be fairly easy to work through although it was apparent that there were other signals (probably without tone) that were on the channel. As the bird went higher (an 86 degree pass for me), it was harder to get into. It could have been that the BBS stops the voice repeater but there were times that VE2DWE was making it (although noisy) and my signal was not there at all. Maybe the amount of deviation on the tone makes a difference when there are a lot of competing signals on the input. As the bird sank low on the horizon on the way north, it was again possible to get into it. Normally there are not many who get into any satellite that is in northern Canada. Less congestion on the input gives you a better chance. The details of how this bird is designed to handle packet and voice at the same time may provide an explanation of what we all experienced. The signal was strong during the entire pass; no problem hearing it. UHF QRM from HAM stations!!

On UHF the band is shared up to a point the "other side" is considering us as "interference" at least in 2005... Just check slide 9 in the power point below. Hi All, Around 2230UTC 20 Dec 2009 the mode on AO-51 was changed according to the posted schedule as follows: December 21 - December 28 FM Repeater, V/U Uplink: 145.920 MHz FM Downlink: 435.300 MHz FM 9k6 BBS, L/U Uplink: 1268.700 MHz 9k6 FM Downlink: 435.150 MHz 9k6 FM The FM Repeater on TXB (435.300) is at about 450mW, while the BBS on TXB (435.150) is at about 500mW. Signals on both transmitters sounded fine. The digipeater on TXB is "ON." We are collecting telemetry (every 30 secs) for the next 24 hours. There is much to celebrate with the successful launch and early commissioning of the XW-1 satellite! Congratulations to Alan, Michael, and the entire team---from construction, to launch, to commissioning. Your hard work is evident and appreciated by ham operators around the world. I had the priviledg of working N3TL on that first linear transponder US pass, and the bird performed and sounded wonderful! Keplerian data via e-mail

Hello During the past couple of days (before we had Keps files with data for XW-1) several users had problems to get their tracking program working with XW-1. In some cases the problem was caused by the fact that they could receive Keplerian data only via e-mail, I think. The Keps files (amateur.txt, nasa.all etc.) require text in Ascii format (plain text). The e-mails, however, usually don't contain plain text. If one copies a data set directly from an e-mail into an existing Keps file the data set will loose it's format and no longer fit the NASA-2-Line format. The data lines are shorter than the lines of other satellites and the parameters, for example the epoch time, are not at the right position. So, the data set can not be read by the tracking program and may cause wrong results or error messages. To fix that issue the e-mail must first be saved with "Save as...." as text file (option ".txt"). Then this file can be opened and with "copy and paste" the data set can be inserted into an existing Keps file. 73s, Erich, DK1TB

First XW-1 transponder pass over the US

That was some really exciting stuff! I recorded the pass on my SDR-IQ/R7000, and had the receive antenna split off to my normal station as well. Right after turn on, K8YSE responded to my CQ, and we had a few brief exchanges. About that time I realized the middle of the pass band was going to be a bad place to be and moved up to the high end of the passband. After moving up out of the mess, I worked W4DFU at the University of Florida, with Jay and Jimmy at the helm, then HK4MKE, Andrew in Columbia. Signals were good until the end of the pass when I think I was having some polarity fades on my fixed LHCP antenna. 1 to 5 watts was PLENTY on the uplink, even when crowded. I use a 10 element horizontal only yagi for the uplink. http://s139.photobucket.com/albums/q305/glasbrenner/radio/?action=view&curr… is a screenshot of from Spectravue before TCA. Notice the lost ditter almost twice as strong as everyone else. There are also at least 9 separate SSB signals in that screengrab, and the beacon is at the far right. The whole file is about 680 Mb. Road Trip

I'll be QRV from the mostly wet grid square EL86 during the AO27 pass starting tomorrow at 20/1846Z; VOX starts at 1852Z. From there, I'll overnight in EL96 and then head for two or three days in the Keys where I'll put out EL94 and EL95 on the FM birds. Since my XYL is with me, I may not be on during every pass, but I'll be on when possible. While we're at Key West, I'll also be looking into the boats that make daily tourist runs to Fort Jefferson in EL84. We won't go there during this visit, but we're thinking about doing a short camping trip that would of course include the sat gear. Afterward, we'll be heading up to Georgia for a few days where I'll be on from EM81, EM82, EM90, EM91, and EM92. CU on the birds. 73, Jim, ND9M

Just worked the new xw-1 satellite. It is nice to have a new ssb/cw satellite and it sounded great on the past a short time ago. Then that was followed by a VO-52 pass that was even louder (of course it is higher). I hope this new bird stays in the ssb/cw transponder mode most of the time. Great satellite times ahead. This gives me more of a chance to reach 6,000 qso's by satellite (still need 38) Perry WB8OTH

It was the first open test of this bird's transponder. Everything works just great!" AFSK packets were active over Japan with JA0CAW receiving the down- link on 435.675 MHz AFSK 1200bps. JE1CVL, JH1EKH, BD4SY, JF2CTY, JH1BCL, JA5BLZ succeeded in a QSO over Japan using the linear transponder in 'VHF(LSB) up and UHF (USB) Linear Transponder Inverting on 145.950 MHz (Up) and 435.740 MHz (Down). The XW-1 communications payload includes a beacon and three cross band transponders operating in FM, linear, and digital modes. December 20, 2009 To All RADIO AMATEURS BID: $ANS-354.04 On 3 February 2006, cosmonaut Valery Ivanovich Tokarev hand launched the Amateur Radio satellite SuitSat-1 from the ISS during an EVA (Extra Vehicular Activity = Spacewalk). SuitSat-1 was a very special Amateur Radio satellite. A discarded Russian ORLAN Space Suit (in Russian a "Skafander") was equipped with an Amateur Radio transmitter, which transmitted telemetry and greetings from youngsters to the youth of the world in several languages. In 2010, an Amateur Radio satellite will once more be hand launched from the International Space Station. It will be called ARISSat-1. ARISSat-1 will again transmit messages recorded by students. Moreover, teachers and students are invited to fly a file aboard this amateur radio satellite. The ARISSat-1 Team wishes to include on our new satellite a memory stick of files prepared by students. This should be a jpg or pdf of things the student has prepared such as a paper or a study done on a STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) topic, a drawing of space craft or a schematic, a journal kept on a STEM topic, a story or news article about a STEM subject, a photo of the class doing a hands-on STEM activity -- that type of thing. Having the student's work be a part of ARISSat-1 means the student is a part of the satellite project and along for the spacewalk and deployment of ARISSat-1. December 20, 2009 To All RADIO AMATEURS BID: $ANS-354.05 NASA has informed AMSAT that the schedule of work for EVAs at the International Space Station is being revised. The planned deploy- ment of ARISSat-1 from the ISS is now being scheduled for either Fall 2010 or early 2011 rather than Spring 2010. This schedule adjustment also impacts when ARISSat-1 will be flown to the Space Station with upload likely to take place sometime in Summer 2010 rather than in January. These revisions were made in response to new higher priority work that must be done during the timeframe of the EVA that ARISSat-1 was originally scheduled in April 2010. Overall, this revision helps ARISSat-1 because it provides additional time for testing of the spacecraft. Furthermore, it also ensures that the NASA Safety Review process for ARISSat-1 can be concluded prior to shipment of the spacecraft to Russia. An even better solution but one requiring a lot of development would be to separate the modulation into phase and amplitude and then modulate the gate with phase and drain with amplitude. Efficiency >80% Besides....where is your 60W going? Venus? Huge power.... David

Yaesu FT-990 Audio Problem

Question about vacuum and power module for linear transponder

Hi AMSATs, After many work on my transponder design I decided to put some work in extending my lab. One of the things I liked to have is a vacuum test chamber, to test electronics under vacuum conditions. I have looked around and I see all kind of classes of vacuum pumps, and their equal increasing price. My question is how deep the vacuum has to be to be able to do a valide test on (space) electronics working under space vacuum conditions ? I also would like to know if anyone has experience in SSB mode with the new power modules types from Mitsubishi. Like the RA60H1317M, which can give 60W power on 2m with only 50mW input power. About 12:25 today I went outside with my TH-F7E handie, and stuck in the frequency. A bit of tuning around and I had noisy but clear CW on 435.780 - quite far down in the noise but a good easy copy. I didn't write down exactly what was sent but the TTT TTT TTT groups were instantly recognisable. Gordon MM0YEQ

Tutorial to configure XW-1 in SatPC32

Here's my attempt at a step by step tutorial to manually configure XW-1 in SatPC32. 1. ADD XW-1 KEPLERIAN ELEMENTS Note: XW-1 Keps are in the 17 December nasa.all Keps from AMSAT. If you use this file, update Keps and skip to step 2 below. If you use a different Keps file use the following steps to manually add XW-1 to your Keps file: A. Ensure that Windows Explorer shows "hidden files": Open Windows Explorer -> Tools -> Folder Options -> View. Select the circle that says "Show hidden files and folders". B. Make note of which "source file" is highlighted in the left side of the SatPC32 "Satellites" menu box. This is the Keps file used by SatPC32. C. Open that Keps file with a text editor such as Wordpad. The file is located here: C://Documents and Settings\[your name]\Application Data\SatPC32\Kepler\[source file] D. Paste the latest XW-1 Keplerian elements into the file you opened. The Keplerian elements should be 3 lines and should look like this: (this example is NOT necessarily the latest version) XW-1 1 36121U 09072A 09349.53641119 -.00000045 00000-0 00000+0 0 31 2 36121 100.5050 046.6267 0007989 035.4736 324.6735 13.16391085 50 E. After restarting the program and selecting the XW-1 satellite, you should be able to enable the 67 Hz subaudible tone: Enable CAT, click the "T" button until it displays "T1". 5. Listened for 10 minutes from 13:31 UTC (past midnight local time) Strong carrier received reaching S7 but was not able to access voice repeater. Transmitted at different power levels using 67 Hz tone but no voice received back from the satellite. Should have stayed in bed :( Alex / VK5ALX

Satpc Rotor control help

I finally got my LVB interface box and com port setting right and have some rotor control with Satpc. I can park, do offsets, manually input and go to predetermined positions, but it will not track any satellite. I have the R+/- set to +. It should be working, but when I select from A,B,C etc sat buttons when they are in range, I get nothing. What am I missing? I have rebooted several times and have nothing else running. Any suggestions. My Nova program works flawlessly but would like to use just Satpc if I can. Thanks Joe KI4TZ

XW-1 Operation Schedule

First of all I must thank everyone who reported XW-1 signal in the past two days! XW-1 Satellite is now running well, the satellite spins at about two degrees per second and the internal temperature of about 20C. XW-1 FM and store-forwared transponder will be turn on again between 1205UTC and 1352UTC on Dec. 18. In the next few weeks, XW-1 flight management team will further focus of the satellite electrical energy balance, and then determine future operations schedule of the transponders. XW-1 9K6 BBS

No 9K6 BBS as yet during this pass. Lots of stations working through the FM repeater though. Occasional bursts of 1K2 packet. Alan said the 9K6 Store & Forward BBS would be operational. Quoted below. Help for an old timer

Hi Everybody, After a 15 year hiatus from being an active satellite operator, I am in the process of pulling my satellite ground station together to operate the various LEO birds that are available to us today. While almost all of the equipment I have is new, I have one vintage item that I would like to put to use in my shack but I am going to need some help. While I was working at SSTL back in the early 90s, I purchased two of the JAMSAT TrakBox kits developed by JA6FTL, JG6MCG, SM0TER et al from AMSAT-UK. As I understand it the kit was made available by TAPR here in the states for a while as well. I built one kit up at the time and sent it to my Dad, KB5ZPK (SK) for him to use in his newly acquired store-and-forward ground station here in Texas. Since I was operating from the Command Center at the University of Surrey, I put the other one aside for use at a later time. Well, the later time turned out to be now and of course since that time the world has dealt with Y2K and all of the associated software upgrades and changes that had to be done. It miraculously appears that I haven't lost any of the components for the kit so from a hardware standpoint I think I am set but I am concerned about the availability of post Y2K software to run in the system. So my question is, can anyone tell me if there is any post Y2K software available for the Trakbox and if so, how can I go about getting a copy of it? While I realize there are now other options available for autotracking, for sentimental reasons I would like to get my kit up and running so any help that I can get would be greatly appreciated. HOPE-1

"HOPE-1" sounds really fine in EL29kq. The following information is assuming that my SatPC32 is configured correctly for the "HOPE-1". My keps read the 36th orbit, an ascending pass at a height of 1196. I picked HOPE up at 0109z on a heading of 97 degrees az from EL29kq, less than 1 minute after AOS and copied her until 0121z at 10.2 degrees az. I lost her signals at 1 minute after LOS. My copy was made with and without the sp432vdg preamp in line and using a 17 element yagi in vertical position. Her signals were very readable un-amplified. there was some fading on two occasions with out loss of signal. My fourth string of copy was: BJ6SA XW XW AAA TTT AA6 ABT ETT TTT TTT TTT TTT TTT TTT TTT TTT XW XW Great job CHINA! 73 louis kd5gm

I'm not suggesting that there's anything wrong with that. Time spent searching for configuration data procedures is time that cannot be spent doing more useful projects. I gave a quick (and uneducated) effort to adding XW-1 into my .SQF files from what I read here on -bb. No success. But no problem. I'll get back to worrying about XW-1 eventually. In the meantime I have other more pressing things to do. Rather than all of us reinventing the wheel each time a new satellite is launched and operational, why not have one of the 'experts' make the additions and make the subsequent .SQL files available to all somewhere on the Amsat web site?
