XW-1's orbit is quite easy for manual tracking, though not quite as easy as it is for AO-51 ECHO or GO32... Just remember these facts: * XW-1's orbits come over 17 minutes earlier each day. * There is a pass 109 minutes earlier and/or later * Once a week (6 days) add about an hour and a half (basically 109 - 17) * The pattern repeats every 6 days but 6 minutes later Basically the exact pass pattern repeats every 6 days, but unfortunately slips by 6 minutes a week so a permanent repeating schedule like we use for AO-51 and GO32 for months is not possible unless you want to add the 6 minutes each week. See www.aprs.org/MobileLEOtracking.html This way say you are far from a PC, all you will need to do is monitor the AX.25 packet downlink for several hours some day with your APRS mobile. Once you get a packet, then you can manually derive the rest of the passes for your trip. (I hope they eventually turn on APRS digipeating on the AX.25 channel for such wilderness travelers..) Ao-51 mode V/S over Europe

Hi, Strong signal at 16.50 to 17.00 utc over europe this evening from Ao-51 mode V/S. For entire pass the signal was very good over s-9 into 90 cm dish with Keps downconverter. Only twice during the entire orbit (3-4 seconds each), the signal dropped down below noise level. No tackers, only a few people who spoke French on the frequency of AO-51 uplink. 73" Frank IW4DVZ

Dear All, After a long time away from the satellites, I am pleased to report the reception of XW-1 over Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Time was 1416 UTC to 1435 UTC and I had a maximum elevation of 68 degrees. Managed to copy the beacon on 435.790 CW +/- with a very good signal of S9+. Tried to work the FM and Linear transponder, but unfortunately could not get the downlink. Is the transponder off during this pass? Time permitting, will try out again 1.5 hours from now. Programming question - frequency units

Thank you for reading this. After a five year rest from the satellites I may soon be in a position to once again resume one of my favourite hobbies. So, over the past couple of months I have been updating my tracking programme. In the process I have discovered that I need to make a design change. Originally the whole programme used Hertz as the frequency unit until AO-40 came along and the numbers became too large for the int variables. It wasn't too difficult, at the time, to change to long variables but I found the long strings of numbers confusing especially in the configuration file. So then I experimented with double variables in Kilohertz. Around the same time AO-40 died and a lifestyle change ended my access to all satellites as well. I've rewritten the configuration class and modelled it around Erich Eichmann's sqf Doppler file which has made selecting satellites with multiple modes neater. This is where the design decision comes in. The main class now uses Kilohertz as the frequency unit while the radio class still uses Hertz. The main class is responsible for the conversion each way but confusion reigns supreme because some variables are in Hertz and others in Kilohertz. This is currently causing me a problem where I'm modifying the code that takes care of calculating a new uplink frequency when the receiver VFO dial is moved. It seems to me that the best idea is to rewrite the radio class so that it accepts double type Kilohertz parameters. This introduces minor frequency errors of a few Hertz due to rounding errors but I don't think that is a problem since my FT-847 only has a ten Hertz resolution anyway. Alternatively, I could convert the double frequencies in the configuration class to longs and use long variables in all other classes. This will now be a more difficult and error prone task to undertake. To answer my own question, I think working in Kilohertz might be the best option but I'd still like to know how others have handled frequency units. -- Regards, Phil

XW-1 Heard over VU

All, I heard the beacon of the XW1 during the 16:32 UTC pass on 15th Dec.VU2BJZ,VU2WMY and VU2GUR also heard the CW beacon. The signals were good right from AOS to LOS. The CW telemetry said that the beacon RF output power was 123 mw and the beacon power supply was as 0.65 volts. I used the telemetry decode application provided by the XW1 team. AWESOME! We had an amazing 75 degree pass here...and not only could the CW beacon be heard quite low on the horizon, but it exhibited very little fade. Hi all, The beacon was heard over India during 16:45 pass. The max elevation was 54 Deg. The beacon was pretty strong and 5-6 VU stations copied with no big set up. All the stations copied using "J" and "Slim Jims". Sure, XW 1 is going to open up a new interest in satellite working and truly an amazing "New Year Gift" from AMSAT-CHINA. Are We Having Fun!!! Copied 23:56 pass of XW-1, 20 degrees, FN30, NY. This baby has healthy Lungs!!! Started to copy CW at .3 degrees, solid tone, thank you Nigel the Keps are spot on. We all know this is a high LEO Satellite, this pass covered Iceland, Northern Ireland, Sweden and the tip of Russia, can you say more awards, grids and most important building relationships deeper into Europe, it isn't A0-40 or a HEO but it will be thrilling to work. On the pass with AOS at 16:45:50 UTC here in Copenhagen the tone did not change (to my old ears) over the whole pass. Used 435.789400 MHz as the center frequency on the IC-910 in USB. Last signal (on my radio) heard at 22:24UTC in locator JO23XE. Used equipment: Transceiver: Yaesu FT897 with standard ceramic CW filter and 300Hz inrad filter. Antenna: M2 436CP30 (45 deg. fixed elevation, I can not move up or down!). Hi Wayne, The folder is hidden, as I recall. It's here on my WinXP Pro system using SatPC32 12.8a: C:\Documents and Settings\(username)\Application Data\SatPC32\Kepler You may have to adjust your folder options to show all folders, etc. under "Tools/Folder Options/View/Show hidden Files and Folders" Hope that helps! -- Mark L. Hi, With the help of www.ham.vgnet.nl/downloads/XW-1_Telemetry_Format.pdf I decoded the beacon information I received. The output power is fluctuating, is there any idea why this is happening? And an other thing, don't we miss a lot of information within the telemetry? channels 6 to 13 have a value 000? Maybe my decoding isn't correct and other amateurs have other information. AO-51 S BAND REPORT

On the 1550 EDT Dec 15) pass i was able to copy from AOS TO LOS if it was not the presence of 2 deep fades one of 15 seconds (making signal going below my noise level) and the other near 30 seconds (making signal just above the noise level) on a +-3 minutes cycle i cannot see much difference from the before attitude change but it will have to be reevaluated when the sat return back to his previous attitude. XW-1 Western North America 15Dec2009 1702z

XW-1 was again heard over western North America with an excellent signal. The new keps provided by Nigel G8IFF/W8IFF were used for Object A and found to be spot on. I set SatPC32 for automatic operation with the TS2000 in the CW mode and the computer clock synchronized with NIST. I never touched the radio dial or the antennas during the entire pass and as you will hear on the recording, the CW tone never changed. The TS2000 was updating the frequency every second. Again I found polarization shifts but the bird did best on Left Hand during most of the pass. This was a 22 degree pass for me to the west. One of the three letter code groups changes on every string of CW starting with BJ1SA XW XW etc and ending with XW XW. For example, the 3 letter groups for some successive transmissions were: TNE TDT AAE ATE 4VE A6E TBT 4VE T6E ATE. Every other code group in the string stayed the same, at least during this pass. I started the recording late. XW-1 Over North America 15Dec09 1517Z

The XW-1 CW Beacon was heard over North America this morning with an excellent signal and tone quality. It sends a long string which changes a bit on every transmission. The keps are a bit off since the bird went over the horizon prior to the prediction. I lost it when it was still at 2.7 degrees according to SatPC32. The doppler correction is off as well indicating changing keps. Hopefully we will get some better keps soon. The bird is apparently ahead of the predicted position. A recording of XW-1 is on my webserver: http://www.papays.com/XW-1_15Dec2009_1517z.mp3 At one point the antenna had to turn around. I had some copy on this bird while the antennas came around 180 degrees indicating a strong signal. I noted that there were polarity shifts between right and left hand circular. At one point I tuned to the packet frequency to see if there was any activity. I heard none but only listened for a short time before returning to the beacon frequency. Congratulations to the Chinese Team that designed, built and launched this satellite. It is off to an excellent start. Hello Johny While it is appreciated that you students are planning to make a satellite, I would just like to remind you that using amateur radio frequencies by non licensed amateurs is just not permitted and WPC will not allocate such frequencies unless the users have valid licenses. I am sure that you are already aware of this. For your information another university is also planning such a project and there faculty and students are busy studying to get their licenses before the satellite is built. I would suggest that you also do likewise or request WPC to allocate frequencies that are outside the amateur bands, so that licensed amateurs can also use their setup to monitor and assist you. This is not to discourage the project but only to caution you on the use of allowed frequencies. Listening to this pass right now, using Mineo's keps. Quite audible with very few fades from 5 deg. with a 1/4 wave vertical and a mast-mounted preamp. Telemetry does have a 5 second period about every minute or so when it goes off. The keps are not yet suitable for doppler tuning: I'm tuning up by 2kHz right now. Hi all, Can confirm Christians report. CW beacon on. Had to go down on the downlink frequency. To start with - 600 Hz when using USB. Had to follow down during the pass until TCA, then up again. AO-51 Mode S reports

AO-51 is currently in Mode V/S on 145.88/2401.200. With our attitude inverted from normal, I'm interested in any S band reports. The L/S antenna should be pointed towards the ground now in the southern hemisphere, and away in the northern. The schedule indicates we would concurrently run the 9k6 telemetry downlink on 435.150. Due to low battery voltages and being near the bottom of the output power selection range, I shut off the 435.150 transmitter this morning at about 1025 UTC. Hallo all, I'm interested to try AO51 on V/S mode with NA (small area in east Canada and n-e US) I have the UTC windows: 14dec 08:35 to 08:37 and 18:15 to 18:21 15dec 07:53 to 08:01 and 17:39 to 17:42 16dec 18:40 to 18:44 power and antennas here surely adeguate to work at horizon level if any of you live in an area covered by AO51 in these times (or can move there) we can try... AO-51 not heard in V/S mode

AO-51 was not heard on the V/S mode at the schedule time only the 9K6 telemetry is present? Did anyone hear something on 2401.200mhz here nothing has been received yet and downconverter is working as i got the usual WI-FI pop pop signals. Could be the attitude reversal killed the S band signal completely in the Northern hemisphere? Hi Guys, As a beginner, I'm always asked wich top 10 sats people are listening too most of the time !?!? I heard for the first time tonight CO-66.... It was very interesting to discover a voice message beacon followed by a digital picture transmission.... never tought about a sat like this. Wich top 10 sats could be in my list !?!? It could be a kind of survey.... I only have 2 Eggbeater antennas V+U with AR² preamps combined with my FT-736R. To all interested. I tracked the SO-67 orbit 1313 (12-13-09, 0147Z) from EL29kq to a max el. of 9 degrees. I made several calls and had s2 to s4 signals coming back (via SP432VGD assistance) but no audio. I did hear very short pings at regular interval's that registered s6. Louis KD5GM

Rick, I've been using Orbitron but I see it is not matching the times on the AMSAT Pass Predictions, so you must be correct. I have downloaded fresh info with Orbitron's TLE Updater so I'm not sure what's wrong, some type of issue with the program or what. AR2 432 MHz preamp - not working?

Was working before the QTH relo. Reinstalled in the attic. The 144 preamp, same power supply, working just fine. Any ideas on how to check w/o taking it apart? The connectors have not been modified. As always, I am certain it is something simple. I would like to thank Erich, DK1TB for performing a change to his program to help me accomplish what I needed to do. I wanted to run my Yaesu G-5500 with my ST-1 controller (Fox Delta) with just the AZ rotor and not use the EL rotor (antenna's in the attic so can't use EL). The ST-1 would not continue to track AZ unless it received data from the EL rotor. Erich sent me a modified version of SatPC32 that would output the EL data as 0 and thus made the ST-1 function in just AZ. Erich has supported me with every question and now went way beyond the "call of duty" to modify his program - for me! I have used other tracking software and have NEVER received support like I have experienced from Erich! Whats more is that he donates his revenue from SatPC32 to AMSAT! He does this all for nothing! My hat goes off to Erich for being an outstanding citizen in the AMSAT community! THANK YOU Erich!! Hi, UO-11 switched on this week on Thursday 10th December, after about 15 days of silence. Good signals received during daylight passes, on Thursday & Friday. However, nothing heard today. I would be interested in knowing whether anyone heard it, or listened and did not hear it, between 11:25 UTC 11 December and 08:26 UTC 12 December. Also reports of when it's next heard, pleaase. Loosing the north!!!

Again my Alfa Spid AZ rotor act again yesterday evening it loose his north setting as it is electronicly set with the control box. Very easy to reset but in the middle of a snow storm (25cm) i was unable to find something to point the beam physically to the north. At the same time there was an AO-51 pass i adjust the rotor to an estimated north and i follow the whole pass manually writing down the real calculated azimuth and the one i got from a maximum signal swinging the rotor back an forth. I make another pass doing the same operation to fined tuned my pointing and today on the 1549 EDT pass i was able to get the satelllite at 1 degrees AOS ans LOS!! signal was S7 most of the time and reaching S9 near TCA? I don't know if AO-51 is still pointing towards the southern hemisphere but i notice only one deep fade and signal was much better than the first attitude change days and i think he never was so strong? I'm guessing my "scientific" previous north pointing was bad or my UHF beam is shooting not towards he point? I'm always using automatic AZ tracking could be i was shooting aside of the target for a while... Just try this on a pass could be you will be astonish too? If AO-51 was returned back to his normal attitude i will have to reavaluate all of what i wrote above. AO-51 trasatlantic QSO possible now

Each 3 days AO-51 footprint reach eastern NA and Europe. This "very early" morning pass here at 0855 UTC put in range of the east of North America (me...at least): Northern Europe and most of Scandinavia. The next similar pass will be on Monday December 14 at 0837 UTC. This pass will cover from a line starting at the South of Spain to the north border of Italy covering near the whole western European continent UK as well Scandinavia will also be in range. Signal on this morning low pass about 7 deg here was Q5 S6 to S7. If there is any takers i can set my alarm clock to be QRV next Monday morning but i know it is a working day could be not the best pass to have a lot of stations but it is not a too bad thing considering the limitation of a one channel sat. G-5500 problem

I have a G-5500 that sometimes will not turn clock wise(CW) but will turn counter clockwise (CCW) OK. When it is working OK in both directions each winding (CW and CCW) measures about 4.4 Ohms in the shack. When it will not turn CW that winding measures about 2.2 ohms (The CCW winding still measures 4.4 ohms). The Controller is fine, so the problem is in the motor. Does this motor have brushes? Any thoughts on what the problem might be? Thanks - Paul KW7Y

Kenwood USA has no idea exactly when their new HF/6M and new HT will be available for sale in the US. The new handheld (informally "replacing" the TH-D7AG) is expected to be intro'd in 2010. It will have APRS / Kenwood Sky Command / TNC / DX Packet Cluster / GPS. Kenwood USA has no further information at this time - neither features nor ETA. SatPC32 rotor steering via COM1 and G6LVB interface

Hello SAT-friends. Has anyone managed to run the rotor steering from SatPC32 via the normal COM1 port. Setup here: WinXP, SatPC32, G6LVB interface, G-5500 Yaesu rotor and IC-910H. G6LVB interface programmed and calibrated via COM1 as instructed, all works fine; buttons on G6LVB interface for rotor control works fine, so cabling should be ok. Starting up SatPC32, SDX starts as well, and Az/El is passed to SDX, as it should, but nothing happens on the G-5500; the same result if Az/El is manually input'ed via SDX. On a SerialMonitor, all commands looks fine, and correct. Closes down SatPC32 and starts a TerminalSimulator (Putty) on COM1; types in a command like w100 45, and voila, the rotor acts as it should; command syntax seen on the SerialMonitor matches the commands, sent from SatPC32. But... there is one difference: RTS on the serial port is low when SatPC32 starts, but high when the TerminalSimulator (Putty) starts; I believe thats the reason commands are not transferred to the rotor (reply >?) I know in the end, that I have to control the rotor via the FTDI USB interface (virtuel COM-port), but haven't had the time to build it yet, and then CAT-control the IC-910H via the COM1 port; I have tested it, and it works fine (with RTS 12V set in the program). And what would the situation have been, if I only had 2 COM-ports, and no available USB-port. If my problem really is, that RTS is low, can I then solve my problem, just by pulling-up the RTS pin, or should I just finish that FTDI USB interface, and forget all about it. I know Yaogan-7 is supposed be an earth observation satellite but there is more than one way to skin a cat - remember the RS- series of satellites piggybacking on a common power supply bus - and the fact that the HF commemmorative station is suddenly activated may well mean something. If you go to celestrak and look at the last 30 days' launches you will see that there are a number of items identified as rocket debris with a 97 degree inclination obviosuly part of the launch sequence for Yaogan-7's 98 degree inclination.
