Hi, Just thought I'd remind everyone that all AMSAT mailing lists are archived and past messages are available for search in two ways: 1. Use the Subscription settings link at the end of each message to go to a web page that has a link to the archives for that mailing list. 2. Search using Google, with the search string <search keywords> site:amsat.org/pipermail/<list name> The <list name> part is what appears at the start of a mailing list subject line; for example, "amsat-bb". LVB Tracker Help

I have resurrected my LVB Tracker project from several years back. Using WinXP, I was finally able to go through the first part of programming the tracker I think. I get the following: Press RESET button. Hit any key to continue. Identifying device... Chip ID=09E6 16F876 identified Beginning bulk erase... Bulk erase finished. Press reset button. Hit any key to continue. Programming device... Programming: <Some HEX value> at this point it counts up from 0000 to 1FE0 (I think the last value is correct, it went by so quickly, I'm not sure) Verifying device... Configuring device... Verifying configuration... Switch OFF device. Hit any key to continue. Remove HDR3. Hit any key to continue. Place HDR1 into RUN mode. Hit any key to continue. Device programmed. Hit any key to continue. Then I get a C:\ prompt. At this point, the device is powered down. I take out the RS232 chip and put in the FTDI chip and connect to the LVB Tracker with Tera Term. When I hit "C," I get: +0546 F, A, S: Az Offset=1023 F, E, S: El Offset=1023 At this point, I'm supposed to turn the rotor CW to 360°. Well, I cannot. As soon as I plug the LVB into the G5400 controller (at the very beginning of programming), everything turned to max (EL at 180° and AZ at 180° Right). I cannot change any setting manually with the rotor controller. I can commit values to memory, but nothing else. When I type F, A, E, I get: Az mul=0000.0000 For F, E, E, I get: El mul=0000.0000 When I commit all this to memory and hit RESET, I still get no movement from the rotor using the controller. Only after disconnecting the LVB from the controller am I able to move the rotor. Any help or suggestions? 73, Joel, W4JBB

Simple 2.4Ghz helix plans?

I threw this out there on the eham satellite forum looking for answers but I'll try here too. I'm looking for some fairly simple plans for this antenna. Everything I find either seems to be intended for WiFi or if it is ham related is full of mathematical formulas to figure length, diameter, spacing etc. Math was never my strong suit so I'd prefer to find something with the actual already computed dimensions clearly stated. Preferably in English rather than metric measurements. I found an article in the May/June 2008 AMSAT Journal that looked promising but there are no hard numbers, just the formulas and I don't have a calculator capable of some of the computations, much less being able to work them out in my head. Been a long time since I was in school!.. hi hi... I have a downconverter I'm not sure even works and I don't want to spend a huge amount of time and trouble to be able to test it. Yaesu radios

Hi, I bought in a hamfest in Quebec, at a very very cheap price, two radio from Yaesu FT-726R and FT-736R. The FT-736R seems to be very neat. It is already connected and working with a CAT cable for satellite operation and finally replaced my 2 FT-817ND. Now I found that I finally have a real full duplex station, and I have a little more power. The FT-726R have the 144, 430 & 440 board in it. It is working very well too, but seems not able to control from CAT. Is there something I could do with this radio or this one is really too old to be part of a sat setup ?? Also find attached are a few pictures of past and some present antennas. I have followed the same process and building methods for L band antennas. I have used Drake, Transystem, Keps and SSB downconverters. The helix is pretty forgiving in measurements. I have the book "Antennas" by Kraus and have "tried" to follow the math and theory. Sort of fair in that regard. I find once I have built few and actually used them, I start to get a feel for them. Which downconverter do you have? There are several good articles in past AMSAT journals. Specifically by Clair-VE3NPC, also K0VTY -Joe, he has forgotten more than I'LL ever know. I have corresponded with them many times. I have built many short helix feeds (5 turns) for off center dishes. In fact that's what I used for AO-40 (sobsob). So, good luck with your efforts. Hello All, We really need a FAQ section on the AMSAT web page for the Yaesu az/el units :) Anyhow, here's my question: Are the G-5500 azimuth and elevation resistor pots the same or different? Hi John, To complement the description of Domenico, here is how my KR500 looked like from inside (picture 5&6): http://www.pa3guo.com/kr500.html I did clean it & apply greece over the balls. A photo of that greece (the brand) you get when you go to http://www.pa3guo.com and click on Rotors, then scroll down. Not sure if my problem was your problem. AO-51 mode VS success at 5 degrees

Hi Drew, If you're still interested in mode VS signal reports, I just worked KG6NUB at 5 degrees elevation. He was pretty much full quieting on the 2.4 ghz downlink here in CM98, and reports he was using an arrow antenna with his HT out on the lawn in CM87 on his end (presumably running mode VU). Yaesu G 5400 elevation rotator quit working

My Yaesu G 5400 Elevation rotator decided to quit working Friday morning. I could press the up and down buttons and hear the motor running but the antennas would not move. After being gone out of town for two days, I decided to try it again Sunday night. And to my amazement, it worked. The antenna moved. Hello The Net: Can some one confirm that the IC-706MK2 and the 706MK2G can both handle WBFM in the 6M and 2M ham bands ? Objective is to use this rig as an RX IF with a 2.4 GHz down converter and have enough detected BW for a Multi7 TNC to decode the 2.4 GHz sats. As I recall the IC-703+ can not do any WBFM. I still think that a large unfolded and/or (partially?) inflatable structure of reflective material structured as resonant reflectors could be an interesting passive reflector of ham frequencies if it was placed on the Moon. It would be easier than a powered active repeater. I know about moonbounce obviously and the laser system left behind by Apollo. 73 de andy G0SFJ

Stealth Satellite Station?

I currently live in a rental house and an outside antenna is out of the question. I asked about putting up a satellite TV dish at my own expense last year and received and flat out "NO". So, my current options are as follows: 1. Going out to my car and working the FM birds with my Icom 2720H and 19" whip. 2. Working the FM birds from the back/front yard or possibly inside the house with my Icom W32A and Elk LP antenna. 3. Setting up my 2720 in the house with some sort of stealth antenna and give a try at satellite APRS. Obviously options 1 and 3 still allow for option 2. Has anyone tried any form of stealth antenna for Satellites. That's exactly why I thought it would be capable of it, because its NOT in the amateur band And additionally, because the handhelds were capable of that. I have one of the handhelds,( VX6-R ) but it has aviation intermod on 137 along with some other kind of Local burst data type interference, perhaps pagers or something. Although it receives it, its Not the best receiver for it in my humble opinion; though , I wish it was. Do folks typically get prompt answers from yaesu? I think I asked them a question once before and got an answer fairly quickly .. Wasn't meaning to bash them ... Just a lil frustrated with no answer .. But thanks for checking that out Tim.. Stealth Satellite Station?

Build a 2m and 70cm Quadrifilar Helix- they'll give you coverage virtually horizon to horizon. Stick them on the roof by using a number of hose clamps to attach the PVC mast to one of the roof's metal plumbing vent pipes (not a gas exhaust or anything with hot air). Low profile, completely temporary, and good coverage. Tim KI6VBY

ARES 1-X 10 0n 10 launch

I just review my DVD recording of the ARES 1-X launch, what a spectacular launch for the tallest rocket in the world. It was amazing to see how in 3 years this rocket pass from a paper sheet to a 300 foot rocket. But it could be the first and the last launch for this amazing 450 millions rocket project. It make's me remember the numerous AMSAT-NA post AO-40 failed project. I now know why and how things evoluate from the 1960 Redstone/Atlas and Mercury project failed launches to this brilliant ARES 1-X success... a 500 Hockey mark. The human factor and knowledge! experience came last as it's often just to confirm the process of bad decisions. Will ARES 1-X survive? It can at least be a wonderful amateur radio satellite launch opportunity but for this it take's will and leadership! A very hard to find resources when ITAR is so easy to invoke... ( getting old sucks sometimes hi hi ) I would like to know if any of the radio guru's out there Know of a way to persuade my 897D to receive in WFM on 137 Mhz? The only place it does that now is on the FM Broadcast band .. I would R E A L L Y like to do this .. I emailed yaesu with the question .. ( I bet we all know the result of that ) Thanks in advance .. And a special thanks to Mike and Tim for helping me so much on The satellite stuff .. Hi all, I read with interest an article on the web "ECHO - America's First Communications Satellite" By John R. Pierce which is available here: http://www.smecc.org/john_pierce___echoredo.htm I know ham radio operators love using their hand helds to communicate using active transponders or active repeaters in space... no issue with that. were there any ham radio projects (either through amsat-na or abroad) that implemented a passive reflector on an orbital vehicle like Project Echo I quote from http://www.satmagazine.com/cgi-bin/display_article.cgi?number=490218137 The Echo-1 Balloon Satellite as it sits, fully inflated, at a Navy hangar in Weeksville, North Carolina. The spacecraft measured 100 feet across when deployed, and was nicknamed a ‘satelloon’ by those involved in the project. The mylar film balloon acted as a passive communications reflector for transcontinental and intercontinental telephone (voice), radio and television signals. Echo 1 re-entered the atmosphere May 24, 1968. What strikes me is the implications of a large large very large antenna (reflector), if only it could be reflective on one side of the sphere only .... (any ideas?) The Echo 2 was a 135-foot rigidized inflatable balloon satellite. The satellite is shown undergoing tensile stress test in a dirigible hanger at Weekesville. The satellite, 50 times more rigidized than Echo I. When folded, the satellite is packed into the 41-inch diameter canister shown in the foreground. Did early amsat folks consider duplicating / adding to any of these projects or launch their own 'satelloon' that did not carry an active RF payload ? Survey: Top 250 grids

Hi all! After recently working a number of rare grids activated by our fellow satellite ops, (again THANK YOU!!) I've been looking over the grid map and wondered what grids are most needed. I, like most, have grids that others may dream of working and confirming and vice versa. Then, there are those grids that are so common, most everybody has worked and confirmed them. Since there are no HEO's and only the FM birds with a couple of linear birds, this survey will be focused on the North American area. I am undertaking a task to get a better reading on what grids are "outstanding" in need of activation. I am looking at obtaining the top 25 grids from the predominately 10 grid fields covering the U.S., Canada and Mexico, for the total of 250 grids. Yes, most of these grids will be in the U.S., however, I'm sure there will be some mention of VE and XE grids as well. What I would like everybody to do is take some time and look at your grid map and write down 25 grids from each of the grid fields that cover the U.S., Canada and Mexico. Those grid fields are: CN, DN, EN, FN, CM, DM, EM, FM, DL, EL. If you don't need at least 25 grids from a particular grid field, no problem, just enter those you still need. Example. Let's say you only need three grids from DM, they are DM74, 75, 76. Just enter those three. To make things simple and easy I will give an example of how the data can be entered and e-mailed to me. Here is an example. CN 79, 82, 93, 95, 99 DN 02, 03, 07, 13, 15, 17, 19, 22, 24, 25, 34, 37, 38 As you can see, it's relatively easy, and very easy if you've kept up on your grid map. :) A couple of notices. 1. Please, do not send any "water grids" since any operation from them is sporadic and most cases, impracticle to activate for most of us. 2. Please send your data to me via e-mail, attaching it to this e-mail will be fine. The cutoff date is November 14, 2009. This will give all plenty of time to look over their maps and data. The PCR-1000 and the UT-10 L-band module have been sold. The Arrow antenna is still available! Keep in mind the current new/retail price for this antenna is $139 (plus shipping). Cute competition winners

Cute Re-entry Competition Winners Declared It seems that when a satellites, reache an altitude as low as about 170km they will be down very quickly. According to Space Track elements, and InstanTrak tracking software Cute was still orbiting when the perigee was below 150 Km. My theory is that cubesats stay in orbit longer because they have a large mass relative to their very small cross section and so experience far drag than bulkier objects. Using that idea I ran the last element set for several orbits and made an arbitrary decision that re-entry probably took place at a perigee of 130Km or so thus putting re-entry pretty much dead centre between two competition entries. I therefore declare Ib OZ1MY and David G0MRF as joint winners !!! On receipt of current postal addresses I will mail out a patch kit to each of the lucky winners. Thanks to Ib, David and everyone else who took part, it was fun to plot the curves and I learned a bit about atmospheric density and solar flux. 73 John G7HIA PS IPS Radio and Space Services, have a useful paper on satellite orbital decay calculations. At the beginning you must go slowly with the above two books but after a few months you will improve and the above matter will come very familiar to you provided that you implement your knoledge following the recommended References and Bibliography. I'm trying to do a calculation on my own based upon published specs for the NASA MRO Ka-band experiment, but am getting some unexpected results for a Ka-band simplex link with Temp=3000K (hypothetical), operating with a Signal to Noise ratio (unitless) figure of 1.171 (representing 4.5 dB eb/no with a data rate of 1 Gbps and a bandwidth of 2.4x10^9 Hz) Question : is 1 gbps not 1x10^9 bps ? Question : if both antennas are 3m parabolic (both are the same type) with 56.4 dBi boresight gain, what would you think the furthest distance the link can perform with SNR of 1.171. I have actually used a padding of 3 dB Eb/No in my link budget, so am not worried about any further signal loss at first (ok, I should be ..) For the exercise, I am choosing a 10 Watt estimated output on an arbitrary basis. So: P_t = 10W G_t = 56.4 dBi = G_r , can we assume the same gain for TX and RX on a parabolic dish ? SatPC32, Yaesu FT-736, and KCT

Has anyone got this configuration working? My current setup is: Yaesu FT-736, WISP, Kansas City Tracker/Tuner with Yaesu 5400 rotor control box. I have try to use Satpc32 with the KCT and it will interface with the rotor control, but will not tune the radio. Do I need a separate cable for the data link? Or will Satpc32 interface with KTC and tune thru the KTC board? Thanks for any info. Jim KE4KOL

Plan 13 in Python

Bruce's recent experiments with the AVR port of Plan 13 has reminded me that I should make a public release of my Python implementation. I keep thinking that I am going to get to making improvements, but somehow I never seem to get around to do doing it, so rather than just delaying, I'll toss it out in its current state and let people experiment with it. It currently includes a plan 13 module, a module for converting maidenhead grid squares and a couple of example scripts (most notably an "elements" script, for fetching elements, and a "nextpass" script that can be used to find details of the next pass of a satellite, mostly useful for LEO sats, but which illustrate the use of the plan 13 module). Feel free to download and use this code for your own experimentation: it's under an open source license whose only significant feature is to acknowledge Miller's original Plan13 code. I used a small radio shack board, a couple of transistors, and 2 DPDT (could be SPDT) 5V relays to duplicate the interface in the G5400B controller in the KR-500, including the DIN plug connection. Hi Samundra, don't see which path loss you assumed, but for 1 AU (149 mill km), I calculate 286 dB @32 GHz. Also 3000K seems much to bad.. assume 300K. So let's add up for 1 AU: 40 dBm (10W) +2x56.4 dBi -286 = -133.2 dBm at RX input 1 Gbit/s assumes 1 GHz bandwidth. 300K is roughly -174 dBm/Hz. 1 GHz = 60dB worse = -116 dBm. So you end up with -133.2 - (-116) = -17.4 Eb/No.. not good. If you add 20dB you end up at 2.6 dB Eb/No. Not brilliant, but close. 20dB means 0.1 AU instead of 1 AU = 14.9 Mill km. I think your result was 4.6E9 m (!), not km.. which is 4.6 mill km. I came across this program on the BBC, rebroadcast late Sunday night in Washington DC on WAMU FM: Digital Planet, October 20, 2009 http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p004l2hz This organization, NetHope (http://www.nethope.org), has developed a small $3000 portable satellite terminal for quick deployment to disaster areas, providing voice and internet service through a commercial geosynchronous satellite. They are called "Network Relief Kits". Amsat can pretty well forget about attracting funding for a geosynchronous amateur satellite supporting emergency communications when the capability already exists. It would seem that the only remaining justification for amateur radio in today's world is for the education and self training aspects. I don't know if "self training" as defined in part 97 carries any weight in today's world. There was a time when most engineers started out as hams in their early youth, but today only formal school based education carries any weight with employers and funding agencies. What this will mean for Amsat's ability to launch any future satellites that are larger than a Cubesat and in a higher orbit remains to be seen. Where does Amsat fit in with NetHope and the other non governmental organisations of the world? Which rotor control to use?

I note the bandplan for home powerline network adaptor extends right out to 200 MHz. I know ARRL managed to get some notches put in for the HF ham bands to reduce the horrendous amount of interference "homeplug" type devices cause. Does anyone know if ARRL is also attempting to get notches for the Amateur Satellite Service allocation at 144-146, and also the US Amateur Service allocations at 50-54 and 146-148 ? EM97 WV Grid Expedition wrap up etc.

The EM97 grid operation on 24 October came off as planned. The operating location proved to be quite good. The lowest western AO-27 pass was only 8 degrees and I was able to hear the entire 7 minutes of it. The last pass of AO-51 at 2338z was the most difficult because of the many competing signals. Many are not full duplex and cannot hear the buzz and continue to transmit. Even so, 21 different callsigns were heard and nine of them were worked. It was very hard to transmit into the bird but very easy to hear it. The operating location elevation was over 2500' AMSL. Only a few hills around me were higher. All of them were covered with trees. It's very hard to find high spots that are accessible, and that makes EM97 very difficult to work if you are in the western part of the US. Temps during the daytime approached 60 degrees but temps during the last pass of AO-51 dropped to 45 degrees with a brisk west wind blowing directly at me. The first pass of AO-27 was a little wet but all in all the weather cooperated. Fifty-six contacts were made and I hope some of you came away with a new grid. QSL cards are being printed and should be out within two weeks. Everyone in the log will receive a card. No return cards are requested. Info is on my qrz.com page along with the card design. Not unlike last weekend, there were others operating away from their home location. Rodney, KC0ZHF, was in EN04 beginning on Friday evening and Gerald, N0JE operated on the EN05/06 grid boundary on Sunday morning. John, W6ZKH, was worked in DM05. Thanks to all of you for operating out of your comfort zone for the benefit of those working on their VUCC totals. Also noteworthy was the appearance of TF3ARI on the early morning 1047z AO-51 pass. Ari is running a TS2000 and is working to improve his receive capabilities. If you are looking for a challenge, try operating in an adjacent grid or take your radio with you when you are on vacation. More and more are trying it and you'll find that you'll really enjoy the change of pace from operating at your home location. 73, John K8YSE

i would like to thank all those that worked me on the trip to Huron, SD EN04, sorry the grid combination EN04/14 location that was scouted did not work out, the area was very muddy and the approaches were not favorable, there was also a digital link that was interfering with my recorder but i could make out all of the stations that i worked, except the last one on the last pass at 0028z on saterday at my los, in total 20+ stations were worked during the 2 day operating on AO-51, the location was a park on the east side of town next to the largest pheasant in south dakota, cards for the trip for those that i have in the log will be mailed soon, for those that do not have cards in about two weeks and woked me let me know, Rodney kc0zhf back in DN94 __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? TS-790 and sat comunication

Hello folks, Recently I have in my station a TS-790 for satellites. In the past the radio used for this activity was a IC-821. On that radio, for sat activity, is suggested to use the main band for downlink reception and the sub band for the uplink. This because the reception in main band is better instead of sub receiver. And the radio, when sat mode is selected, allow that configuration. Now on the TS-790, Have I to follow the same setup? Hello Mario, For the TS-790, the MAIN band transmits and receives. The SUB band is receive ONLY. So, for TS-790 satellite operations, you should use: MAIN band for Transmitting SUB band for Receiving It's a very nice radio for satellite operations! Cute 1.7 Re-Entry

Its Official Cute 1.7 has re-entered. With no new elements from Space Track since 16:26 UTC on October 24th it was no surprise to see this afternoons posting at 15:03 stating that Cute 1.7 has decayed. There has been sudden rise in sunspot numbers and in solar flux over the past few days which no doubt speeded up its demise, which probably took place just a few orbits after the 16:26 UTC elements. I will announce the re-entry competition winner after I have attempted to get an estimate of the re-entry time. If anyone cares to post an opinion based on the last element sets on Space Track I would be pleased to compare results. 73 John G7HIA

Yes, Dan, I did get that bit. The other half of the "twisted pair" is GM1SXX, IT engineer by trade and software guru. If my proposal does bear fruit, would you be interested in giving D-Rats a haircut?. (read: produce a dedicdated cut-down 'space' version). As per today, we're still in the concept thrashing department. The first dedicated D-Star satellite launch is slated for October 2010. Making a Circular Polarized antenna

Hi folks, Just curious... One of the ways to make a circularly polarized antenna is to feed two linearly polarized antennas in-phase, but mount one them 90 degrees rotated from the other, and 1/4 wavelength ahead of it. Couldn't one also mount the two antennas 180 degrees rotated and 1/2 wavelength ahead? The reason I ask is that I have some flat panel 2.4 ghz "Wi-Fi" antennas, and the mounting holes work out best that way. The only effect I can think of is that the array will probably pick up signals from both left and right polarizations, which could actually be handy. Hi Drew et al I monitored the last pass with three radios. On the standard 70cm downlink. A three foot primestar dish with transystem 3731aa downconverter to a TS700A transceiver. Finally a "portable" 20 turn helix with a IC-W32a connected to a Keps 13-LNC2-PH downconverter. The primestar dish and 70cm antennas tracked automatically via a LVB tracker. With the 20 turn helix I stood out in the driveway (w/rain) waving it around at the sky (neighbors already look at me funny). I was surprised how sharp the 20 turn helix is, 20 degrees off the satellite and it's almost gone. Solid full quieting signals on all three receivers, obviously the dish was stronger. With monitoring all three receivers and tracking doppler manually I had no time to do any transmitting. A very busy and entertaining 10 minutes! I have a couple of pictures of the lash up should anyone like to see them, email direct. I believe the KR-500 and G1000DXC could be upgraded for LVB control with some thought. My LVB tracker ran an old Wilson 500 rotor that I modified for several years before it gave out and I had to upgrade to a 5500. Hello Piero, The times reported on the website of SA AMSAT ( http://www.amsatsa.org.za ) and with the time told by Mike, DK3WN (thanks Mike) do not correspond with the schedules resulting from my simulations. For the Sumba not go active on Europe the satellite had to be activated and deactivated in the region of Africa the same would happen to North America, but I do not know if someone has the privilege of controller in North America to enable and disable the transponder. I tried at 10:55 PDT (presumably 1755Z) from CM88. But i had lots of trees, haven't used that antenna in a long time and various forms of 'operator error' are likely (since i'm out of practice). A small step back into things

Those of you who have seen my post to this forum in the past know that I've unfortunately had to sell some of my gear on and off to make ends meet. I went from a TS-2000X to an IC-820 to no satellite stuff at all. Just recently I had to part with my HF rig as well. I was determined though that I wasn't going to give up and an FM LEO capable station seemed feasible and better than not having anything at all so I have started pursuing it. I just got my Yaesu VX-3R HT from the UPS man Friday, it is primarily to be my receive radio as I already have another 2 meter radio. I have felt like a kid who couldn't play with his new toy though because my adapter to be able to hook up an external antenna to the SMA connector on the HT was back ordered. We have a few repeaters here but I'm out in the sticks and the rubber ducks on these little rigs are notoriously dreadful. Anyway finally decided to step outside the house tonight about the 1800 UTC pass of AO-51 and see if I could hear anything but noise. Amazingly enough, even with just the stock rubber duck, I could hear stations. Everything was down in the noise and not really discernible enough to copy but I could tell people were there. I don't think I really needed much more antenna and I probably would have had decent copy. It was only a small step and there is much work to do but it did make me feel as if I had actually moved forward on getting back on the birds. Just wanted to share, 73, Michael, W4HIJ

Introducing qrpTracker, a $4 microwatt satellite tracker

Over the last couple of months I've ported the Plan13 satellite tracking algorithm to a library for the Arduino platform. To inspire Arduino hobbyists and fellow amsaters, I've made a website to explain and explore this material, http://sites.google.com/site/qrptracker/ There you'll find a 4 min. introductory video. Around 1:33, the Arduino demo starts. Though I was originally thinking of making a sort of doppler tuning dongle for my FT-817 -- a sort of LVBTracker for the trail -- along the way I've become aware that there are many uses of a $4 device that can track 13 tles all alone, and leave about 14kB for other programming, all with the possibility of average power use in the tens or hundreds of microwatts and SMD dimensions of 8mm^2. For instance, equipped with a low-power tracker like this, an amateur satellite could track its own location over the earth by means of a reliable real time clock, and it could change its mode depending on its calculated location, say turning off its beacon over the poles and oceans. (Plan13 *in* outer space!) I've implemented this idea in the demo http://code.google.com/p/qrptracker/source/browse/trunk/modeSwitcher_powers… Regions of earth, defined with latitude and longitude limits, are stored as an array, and when Plan13 finds the satellite is within one of these regions, it raises one of its pins to a 'high' state, otherwise, this pin is 'low'. When not calculating position, the AtMega328 can drop into a low-power sleep, consuming around 20 microWatts, but retaining the state of its signaling pin. The satellite uses the state of the pin to turn off its beacon, or to switch from a linear to an FM mode. I plan to illustrate this in a future screencast. Of course, the same idea could be implemented in a multitasking IHU of any platform. qrpTracker is offered as a simple means by which people can play around with satellite tracking in microcontrollers, and I welcome collaborators and bug reports at its open-source code repository at http://code.google.com/p/qrptracker/ Finally, if anyone has use of a chip that spits out AZ/EL and doppler info, either through serial-line requests or off of the I2C bus, I'd be happy to send off a chip loaded with the keps you need. Your application would have to supply the real time clock, and eventually the loaded keps would get stale, but by that time you'll be hooked and have the equipment to update the keps yourself :-) 73, Bruce VE9QRP

SO-67 keps designation change

Afternoon, There have been some changes of the Space Track designation for SO-67 recently. Originally, it was object 35867. According to the AMSAT-SA page, it is now object 35870, with the old 35867 now FRIGATE/IRIS according to Space Track. This is reflected in the AMATEUR.TXT list most tracking programs use. If you use the AMSATNAMES.TXT file in SATPC32, you will need to make the appropriate change. Of course, this assumes that NORAD is fixing a mistake and not introducing one. ;) Alan WA4SCA

Some maritime TVRO antennas used a mechanical scan at the feed point. A motor would either rotate an attenuator disk or offset the feed in a circular motion. A resolver kept track of the feed location in relation to received signal strength. The antenna was then slewed in the direction of best signal in both AZ and EL. Sort of a poor mans monopulse system. This works OK for antennas in the microwave region but would not work to well for VHF/UHF low gain arrays. What might work well is to use a pair of antennas with a "doppler scan" circuit that steered the rotor toward the estimated direction of the signal. You might look at: http://oscar.dcarr.org/ There DF2LV reported hearing LO-19 telemetry on Oct-23-2009 between 10:46-11:00 UTC. Perhaps DF2LV can comment on any frequency drift issues? I think that report is the last report of hearing LO-19. AO-51 BBS uplink off for ~24 hours

I was tuned to 437.125 and have an SDR-14 connected to the receiver IF. During the pass the SDR-14 was set to display a +/- 20khz window and nothing was seen. I replayed the pass recording and looked at it with the SDR-14's widest window (+/- 95khz) and still saw nothing. Looks like LO-19 may have joined my other favorite ham-sat, GO-32 in going silent. Bill's new book provides significantly more detail as well as brings the reader right up to the current year. I heard LuSAT the other night...I believe. It may have drifted off frequency significantly. I thought that it was a problem with HRD not tracking...but when I hit F2 for Manual Tune, I QSYd UP...and found its strong CW being sent. Next pass, try hunting around for it. Maybe I'm wrong, but I can swear I heard it ID as LUSAT hihihi. I know I'll be listening later. Hi, Amsat-BB Are there any antenna designs that use predominantly rotating sub-reflectors and a reflector for tracking LEO birds, in contrast to rotating the main antenna structure on booms in the AZ-EL directions ? I am aware of multi-LNB antenna arrangements, thought it would be interesting to find out ways to keep a fairly large reflector constant on the ground and use a smaller steerable sub-reflector or horn feed to aim the beam ? Arrow 10W Duplexer Performance Measurements

Quite a lot of guys are using the handy Arrow Model 10W duplexer for the handheld 146/437 antenna and mine arrived here today so I thought I would put it on the network analyser and see how it performs..... >From the Radio cable to the 2m antenna connector an Insertion Loss of 0.75dB was measured with a rejection of 57dB at 70cm. The VSWR at 2m was 1.24:1 >From the Radio cable to the 70cm antenna connector an Insertion Loss of 1.2dB was measured with an attenuation of 56dB on the 2m signal.
