Road Trip to DM90 C.I.P.

The planned trip to Grid DM90 is off for the time being. Got to investigating the map, and it will be a +100 mile one-way trip, which is abit out of the way at the moment. RG316/U

I will be traveling to Ireland next week and will be taking my FT60R handheld and an Elk antenna. I purchased a short length of RG316 with appropriate connectors installed to avoid the need for several adapters and bulkier RG58. I was shocked at how small the diameter is for the 316. Manufacturer assures me it will work quite well at 145/435 for the use intended. Has anyone had experience with this cable? Tnx 73 Marc, W4MPS W4MPS(a)nc.rr.com

It seems everyone uses the program a little differently ;-) There were some errors in how the program handled real time mode calculations when a user's computer clock was not set to UTC. The program now works correctly with any local time offset from UTC (including fractional hours, where applicable). You might also try playing with one of the other settings. It's been a while since I've used SatPC32, so don't quote me on the name of the setting, but it may be the CAT delay. On my 817 I had to change the setting from the default of 120ms to 250ms. Tim KI6VBY

There has been a lot of discussion about using PDAs and the like to do satellite orbit prediction. Indeed, I've thought about writing my own satellite prediction stuff for the iphone, but haven't bothered yet, mostly because i find that having another electronic device that I am staring at while I am pointing an antenna with one hand and playing with the HT in the other isn't at all helpful. Here's how I work a pass: 1. Early in the day (hours ahead of time) I run a prediction for the satellite of interest. Minimally, you need to know the time of the AOS and LOS, the maximum altitude of pass, and azimuth at which these events occur. 2. Make sure you know where north is. From your home QTH, it probably is easy, but I carry a compass for mobile operation just in case. 3. You need to know what time it is. Accuracy to 30 seconds is probably reasonable for hand held operation, where you might not work down to the horizons anyway. 4. At AOS, aim your antenna near the horizon at the AOS azimuth. Don't bother sweeping left and right all that much if you are pretty sure of your directions: the sat will come up on target. For 70cm downlinks, start 10khz high for the LEO sats we currently have up. 5. Work the pass. If you know the azimuth and altitude and time for the max elevation, you can with a glance at your watch "interpolate" the satellite pass pretty reasonably. It may help to have a couple of other times/locations along the path, but isn't strictly necessary, particularly if you have full duplex, since you'll be able to hear how you are doing in working the pass. Honestly, having an interactive display wouldn't be all that useful during the pass. For one thing, I don't have another hand to hold it. Additionally, it's not like the satellite is going to do anything unexpected: it will be coming up exactly as expected, and setting exactly as expected. One thing I am working at is a script to create Google Calendar events that are automatically synched to my iphone. That way, I can get the details of each pass automatically a day in advance. Just having that static data on my phone (which I am seldom without) suffices for 95 percent of all my operating needs. I should thank WB4APR and K7AGE for their satellite operation tips. Bob points out that satellite orbits are regular, and hence can be easily predicted ahead of time, and a simple printout will show you within a minute or so when the pass will occur... http://www.aprs.org/sset.html Randy, K7AGE used a printout of the pass taped to his HT in one of his videos, which I did when I started, but later I realized that if I just "rehearsed" the pass in my head and had a watch, it wasn't necessary. 73, Mark K6HX

SatPC32 Not Tuning

I am trying to get SatPC32 v12.8 to automatically tune my FT847. When the program first comes up, the radio is initialized as indicated by the "CAT" display and when I click on a satellite, the radio tunes to the correct satellite. That's where it stops; it no longer changes the frequency of the radio. If I turn off and turn back on CAT control, it will update once and will then quit again. I have the same problem with my FT-857. I have read the help and .SQF files, but I cannot seem to find the right combination. I have changed the baud rate of the radio and the program to 4800, 9600, and 57.6k and made the corresponding changes with the CAT delay value as recommended by the manual. I have not yet tried uninstalling and re-installing the app. I am running Vista 32bit and using a USB-to-serial converter which works with everything else. The same converter works with the HRD 5.0 Satellite Tracker. Problem is, I cannot get HRD to accept sub-audible tones so I can work AO-51. I don't know if it's a limitation of the program or cockpit error. Any suggestions, known issues, or anyone else having the same problem(s)? hi i can help, i have reason to believe the SatPC32 does not like some usb converters, i "had" some with the FT-857d and things like you described happed to me also changed to a straight usb cable for the radio and the problem went away (FT-817nd also) auto tune worked, your second problem no need for tones for AO-51, SO-50 yes (typo??) i just set the tone in the TX radio and not the software and works good with both programs at least for me,i use satpc32 just my preference. hope that helps Rodney kc0zhf

Shamai, What you are seeing is a problem that has a vareity of solutions. There is not one program that does everything you need to do! So, you may have to run more than one program at a time. I run SatPC32 to control my rotators and radio VFOs AND I also run WISP to run the PBBS software and to schedule other programs to run for specific satellites. So, I run both programs all the time. For GO-32 KISS reception, try using Mike DK3WN's excellent software ONLINE KISS+ to capture a KISS File and then decode it with his TECHSAT-1B (GO-32) Telemetry Beacon Decoder. You can download both here: http://www.dk3wn.info/software.shtml There are other solutions to our problem (using Wisp and WispDDE for frequency control). But I much prefer SatPC32 for radio/rotors and WISP for TNCS and scheduling programs. For example, with GO-32 you can have Wisp run the ONLINE KISS+ software instead of the PBBS MSPE program. It is just a configuration matter. In both there is something missing... I hope someone will be able to give me some advise...: Way #1. With SatPC32. SatPC32 provides good tracking capabilities. I get automatic receiving frequency control via CAT, including Doppler compensation, and I get automatic antenas control via the LVBTracker. However, I am missing a software to capture the KISS information in a file, and will also need to work with the PACSAT protocol for the BBS. Way #2. With WISP. I succeeded to get the antennas rotor control working by WISP, but so far I could not learn how to control the transceiver frequencies, and also to automaitcally switch from receive to transmit for sending packets and requests to the satellite. I have an ICOM IC910H and a Kantronic 9612Plus TNC. My PC is a laptop with only USB ports..., no RS232. AO-51 L/S?

Hello Gents I would like to request a "somewhat" consistent L and / or S mode availability on AO- 51. A recent post by John-K8YSE correctly explained that long term L/S availability is almost counter productive. If we define that by the number of operators to pass ratio. There are a few of us L/S holdouts mostly from AO-40 (sobsob). If we could plan that for say three days (or whatever) at a given date we can expect those modes, and be ready. Right now it appears to be a month to month variable decision with nothing definitive. If there were more availabilty and chit-chat about L/S modes it might inspire others to try it. AO-51 is the only testbed for varied L/S modes. The only way I have for "tweeking" my S band gear is to put a -35Dbm signal source at the end of my driveway and tweeking my equipment and antennas. Real world evaluation is always the proof of success. 73 Bob W7LRD

SAT PC32 / AO-7 Mode B

I made a couple contacts on AO-7 Mode A just fine And when you click on CAT and look at the freq selections For Mode A it matches the cheat sheet AMSAT sent me. However that's not the case with MODE B freqs .. Doesn't match the chart.. And I cant seem to make a contact. ( still ) I have the CAT cable hooked up and SAT PC32 setup ( thanks to Tim, N3TL ) And as I mentioned, Mode A worked fine.. Did something happen to the sat to shift that ? I have a log periodic covering 50mhz to 1.3ghz. 360 rotation w/no obstructions,55ft up on tower. If I put a duplexer on feed line using a 2000x would this be suitable to work VO-52??? Thanks George

Arrow Antennas - Horrible Performers

Arrow Diplexer loss + Arrow v Elk

Jeff, you said; "The antenna and coax remain the same, the difference, the diplexer." My Arrow diplexer has three factory fixed wires coming out of it, one for the radio and two that go to BNC connectors on the Arrow antenna. So, you cannot say; the coax remains the same! The coax on your diplexer or the connections to it, can be at fault as well. These coax wires and how well they are connected to the Arrow diplexer, are another variable that you have not considered in your statement because they are removed from the mix when using the Elk, unless you are trying to use the Arrow diplexer on the Elk Log Periodic antenna, Which I doubt because I am assuming you used the same one radio configuration on the Elk as you did the Arrow with your diplexer but if you are that could be presenting some other variables to produce the results your experiencing. You have to use different cables for your Comet Duplexer on the Arrow, from the Comet, to the antenna connection. Although, I agree that the Arrow seems to pick up the signal a little later then my Elk antenna, both antennas work pretty darn good, IMO. I like them both and recommend them both. I do not have a technical background so my comments here, are all anecdotal in nature but the other thing I have noticed between the two antennas, is that when I make terrestrial contacts with them, the Elk appears to radiate almost as well toward the back, as toward the front. I have been told this is called front to back ratio. If I point north, a guy from the south calls back and I tell him, wow I am pointed north, let me turn and point it toward you.......any better.... And usually there is little if any improvement, while on the Elk and what blows my mind is, there is also a fair bit of response from people even 90 degrees from the business end of the Elk. I have tried the same with the Arrow and gotten much different reports. This is only a general statement; I think the Arrow has a better front to back ratio, more energy going out the front end but I know there are other variables such as; hand held or up on the tripod I use to hold them each up (at times) and perhaps the ground under me, or the moisture in the ground during the different attempts, etc. (4-5' above the ground on tripod and me not always right behind it, so plenty of variables but in general, that is my experience in the field) Nevertheless, I have mentioned this to several on the board who have the Elk's and no one has responded that they have tested there's in this regard, so take this with a grain of salt for now. To others, I would love to hear your experience in this regard. I have asked a capable HAM friend to help me figure this out, properly, so one day I will have more then anecdotal info. I think both antennas are very well built and work well for satellite and emergency communications! I have often pulled one of them out, with success, when band conditions would not allow an Omni to get the job done on my VX-7R. I found the Elk a little cheaper to buy unless you do not purchase the Arrow diplexer. For others I will point out that, you can use the Arrow with two radios without a duplexer, with same two radio configuration, you will need a duplexer for the Elk and of course the reverse is true if you are using one radio for dual band work, as I do, the Arrow will require a duplexer and the Elk will not. In case anyone at all is interested - which doesn't appear to be the case - the QRP pair on AO-51 remains active at 145.880 up and 435.150 (+/- Doppler) down. From here, it's a shame to hear the chaos on the other V/U frequency pair, but not have a single station respond to calls on the QRP pair during a 54-degree pass up the east coast of North America. This has proven to be the case on multiple passes this week. Maybe someone will show up later tonight or in the morning. Or ... I'll keep talking to myself .... hihi. 73 to all, Tim - N3TL

You just have to start. Be the first on your block to confuse the lineman who show up during a power failure. I did. I posted the above text on the new york times "Green Inc" energy blog back on september 23, 2009 as a comment to an article regarding solar power in africa. The internal discharge in a deep cycle battery is only about 50 milliamps which I consider insignificant. I dont want to be connected to the grid which I consider "STUPID" and you dont either. Dont follow, think for yourselves. Think about this..... brain waves operate up to about 20 cycles per second, imagine what 60 cycles is doing to you and the world. Pat

Questions regarding WISP and operating satellite BBS

Hi all I am trying to download telemetry from GO-32 in KISS mode, and later on, I would also like to operate the AO51 BBS. I tried two ways. In both there is something missing... I hope someone will be able to give me some advise...: Way #1. With SatPC32. SatPC32 provides good tracking capabilities. I get automatic receiving frequency control via CAT, including Doppler compensation, and I get automatic antenas control via the LVBTracker. However, I am missing a software to capture the KISS information in a file, and will also need to work with the PACSAT protocol for the BBS. Way #2. With WISP. I succeeded to get the antennas rotor control working by WISP, but so far I could not learn how to control the transceiver frequencies, and also to automaitcally switch from receive to transmit for sending packets and requests to the satellite. I have an ICOM IC910H and a Kantronic 9612Plus TNC. My PC is a laptop with only USB ports..., no RS232. I am using USB to RS232 converters, but I don't think i can access hardware pins of the DB25 after the converters, for the T/R control. Thanks & 73, Shamai 4Z1WS

Everything was proceeding marvelously last night at the Associated Radio Amateurs of Long Beach (CA) meeting. Looking at the Grid Map, seems EL79 has pretty small land mass, so probably not alot of activity that way. I have made several QSOs on passes under 4 degrees maximum elevation. If you are in an arctic location or africa and think you have a shot at working me, I would be specifically interested in working you and would ask that you email me directly for a sked. AO-27 is not a good choice since the timer is turned on when it is well above the AOS horizon and it is switched off before it reaches its LOS horizon. That leaves a dependable AO-51 to test it out. With the last setup, the OEM diplexer provided by Arrow Antenna, I would copy AO-51 about 3 minutes after AOS and lose it about 3 to 4 minutes before LOS. Not bad, but people were saying they worked the birds when they were 1 degree off of the horizon. I have some pine trees that could be an issue but they are spaced far enough apart that I can work between them and I also have to deal with the McCollough Range to the SSE of me here in Las Vegas, NV. Today, there were 2 passes of AO-51, one at 12 degrees elevation, the other at 74 degrees. During both passes, I began to copy the downlink about a 1.25 minute after AOS. A considerable difference from 3 minutes. The downlink also improved down to about minute before LOS. On the last pass I worked KG6NUB at 0124z and LOS was 0125z and my downlink sounded fairly good, though I was fighting desense. (That's another issue I need to resolve.) Also, on both passes, I never once lost the downlink. No dropouts or fades. I'm still amazed. Another issue I came across was how wide the beamwidth is of the Arrow Antenna between the Arrow diplexer and the new diplexer. I was wondering if this was going to happen and it did. The reason that this happened was with the old diplexer, the signal attenuated so much that you had to be pointed right smack dab on the bird, a few degrees off and you lost the signal. Now, with the new diplexer, you can point the beam in the general direction and still copy the bird. In most cases I had to turn the beam 90 degrees before I completely lost the downlink! Twisting the antenna to make polarization changes makes absolutely no difference now. This also attributes to the fact that now I'm copying the entire pass without dropouts or fades. Makes sense. What I've regained over the lossy diplexer makes up for any polarization differences, etc. for a better copiable signal. I've also got a KEPS downcoverter, AND a K5GNA. And I have one of those really nice 1M dish antennas from that guy in Pennsylvania, all never used, except for the K5GNA, which was used at Field Day on a 2M dish when AO-40 was still alive. When I operate satellites from my apartment, I use my terrestrial 2M/70cm antennas, and pick passes that don't go above 15* or so. I need a little help with the software and the rig. Cant get it to track on tx freq. as far as it going to the rig. Shows up in the software just fine. I read that I have To click the TX button in the radio GUI and not my footswitch And even then the freq shows something different until I unkey. I am starting to think this software and my radio werent made For each other .. Anyone with a lot of patience that's willing to assist? Really starting to regret buying this FT-897. OH .. And the receive updates that get sent to the radio >From the satellite tracker. Is there a way to change the rate At which the updates are sent? Should I be trying a different piece of software? I've always wondered why the solar panel makers don't put water tubing on the back side of the panels. Boost the efficiency, and get hot water for the house or pool at the same time. Seems like a no-brainer. {shrug} Unfortunately for me, I have large trees shading the house (big enough that I'm hoping I'm coming out ahead with lower air conditioning bills), and a roof angle exposure that is not solar-friendly even if they weren't there. So I was thinking, if I had space for just a few panels, perhaps I could go low-tech with a system built from a scrap UPS. After all, I've got an APRS station - PC, TNC, radio, and internet connection - using power constantly, and I often find perfectly good UPSs being tossed out (i.e. free) because the battery is shot and not worth replacing. Put the solar cells in place of the UPS' battery, and modify the power failure detect circuitry to work backwards - give preference to the battery/solar side, only switching to the line side if there is insufficient "battery" power. This will give me free 120 vac whenever the sun shines. At night, it would power-fail back over to the line, and only then would the power company's meter start to spin. I'd probably put a regular UPS down stream from the hacked-up one, in case the failover/back from line to solar wasn't real clean. The biggest problem I see is that most of the solar panels available these days are in the 50-60 volt range, which means that you'd need to do a conversion down to battery voltage first. (Maybe put two panels in series and run them into a regular 12v DC power supply?) Now, I just need to find a source of free-to-cheap solar panels. I almost bought a set at a local Ham swap ($10 ea) that had cracked surface glass but were otherwise functional, but I didn't think they'd survive the trip home in my car (no place big enough to lay them flat). (I'd need to weatherproof them too....) Anyway, just a thought... I've had a solar grid inter tie set up here in California for a number of years, so I have had a tad bit of experience. The cost can be somewhat deceptive. I have heard prices of $20,000 to $30,000 banded around. At installation there is a healthy rebate from the California Public Utility commission, many other states have similar set ups. Then there are tax credits for Federal. California recently dropped their state credits. Plus, usually even a small installation, while not bringing you down to zero cost electrically, does bring your peak into the lower tiers of cost. Out of pocket mine cost me about $6,000. And it is working great. No, I do not have to clean them off every month. My monthly electrical bill is about $25. I am now in the process of adding a wind turbine to the mix. So look at the entire mix, ie cost, rebates and credits, and effects on the bill. Since Satellite design is heavy into Solar power, and I talk about that a lot, you may have heard me compare my Solar car to Solar panels on the roof of your house as not economical, I WAS WRONG. I was overlooking many recent changes in the environment: 1) Solar panels (PV) are 1% of what they cost in 1970 2) PV dropped 40% this year due to 2007 Energy Boom and 2009 economic bust 4) $5,000 to $20,000 tax and cash back incentives for YOU 5) Grid-tie systems operate at 95% efficiency compared to 70% of battery systems 6) Local electric rates DOUBLED in the last 2 years 7) Laws require utilities to pay you the same peak rates they charge you. 8) Solar Energy credits can gain an additional $275 per 1Kw system per year 9) Payback is at least 10% per year or better 10) The same money in the bank gets 1% interest So I was wrong in not keeping current with all the changing environment, and now I am full speed to get my system approved and built and correct any miss-guidance I may have helped propagate. Sorry. I am claiming this particular email is on-topic because of public statements to the contrary I have made at satellite forums. But this hot topic should probably spin off elsewhere. We need a HAM Solar Power group somewhere...? Summary: Do NOT make the mistake (as most of us do) of thinking in terms of stand-alone Battery back-up solar power systems . They cost more and you don't need it in most places where you have access to the grid. They cost $5 to $10,000 more, are only 70% efficient (compared to 95% for grid-tie) and are a never ending maintenance headache. Instead, most any enterprising ham should be able to provide his own backup power using a cheap 1 kW inverter for about $150 from any auto store or radio shack running off his car's 12V system for any power outages. That, a few deep cycle batteries, (and using CFL lightbulbs in your house) will give you enough emergency power to operate your full Ham station, all the lights in the house you want plus your refrigerator for as long as you can buy gas. But the other 99.99% of the time, sell your solar power to the power company (at peak rates during the day) and buy it back cheap at night (you win and you don't even have to worrry about batteries)... And even if your grid-tie solar array produces nothing (in the way of AC power) when the grid goes out, you still have many Killowatts of DC power on your roof, that you can surely find lots of things to do with until the grid comes back. For example, have the electrician wire a 250 volt string of the 200 Watt solar panels in the array to a DPDT switch so they can be disconnected from the Grid Tie system and the 250 VDC can be available to you. THen you can plug in as many modern DC/DC pwer supplies into that 250 VDC to give you LOTS of amps at 12 volts, or ... almost any modern gizmo has a universal power supply input that will run on anything from 110V to 330V DC as is. AO-7 Mode A

Hello All, Yesterday, when the AO-7 has radically changed the mode B to mode A, I noticed that the amount of QSO in mode "A" increased significantly, we see in the log of the AO-7. The signals are stronger at 29.450 MHz. Now the night, I heard stations of PY5LF, PY4ZBZ and especially Joe, K3SZH with signal 5 / 7 at the end of the orbit, in SSB. Is a wonderful sign in mode "A". I use a antenna 40 meters of wire and a 3 element yagi. I would like to invite the users of AO-7 to take this chance that the satellite is giving us to keep the QSO in mode A, I do not know how long it will last this facility. Most panels are guaranteed for 25 years, I believe. And that guarantee is that they produce xx% of a new panel. There will be reduced efficiency over time, but systems should continue to be effective for years after the guarantee is over. Arrow 11 Antenna performance from the designer

Hello, I've been reading the comments on the Arrow 11 Antenna regarding performance comparisons with the stock vs. commercial Duplexer's. I decided to find the designer and ask him, while not the scientific answer I was seeking it does give us some idea of what he was asked to design. 73, Pete, WB2OQQ Pete; Well, 2.4 db of loss sounds like one that is a little high, but possible if you include the cables. I did this design over 10 years ago, and I hold no stake in Arrow or Duplexer production. I used surface mount components that made it so that it would fit in the handle. The losses form those are not as good a tuned up commercial duplexer with better Q's for the inductors. As with any project some one's idea is always better than the rest. I take it with a grain of salt, this was a fun project I did for AMSAT and hold no grudges on making it better. If you can come up with a better design with some of the stuff that is out there, Go For IT!!! Best Regards Charles,

Help with TrackBox and Yaesu Control Box

Hello to the list, I own a trackBox and as Rotator the G-5400B. I have noticed a strange thing when I go to switch of the Control box. Every time I switch it off, while the Trackbox is on, I see the trackBox lcd going crazy or I can see the letters disappear and The top of the display all square. Anybody can tell me what is going on and how to solve it? quadrafilar helix for 70cm- ambiguous design specs

Hi All, The house I just bought precludes me from even using my arrow inside as there must be something un-RF friendly in the walls. Therefore, I was looking for a roof antenna and the October QST article on the QFH inspired me to build one. However, after doing some research, I have come up with two sets of design specs and I'm unsure which one is correct. I converted everything from you're the 146Mhz QST model to 436Mhz. However, when I plug that info into http://www.jcoppens.com/ant/qfh/calc.en.php The values it puts out are different in the "compensated length" field. The only difference is this model calculates for a full turn as opposed to a half turn, but the lengths shouldn't be as different as it says. Under the QST model, I get a wavelength of 688mm, but under the website's model, it gives me a "compensated wavelength" of 729mm. The values I used to calculate are: 436 1 1 15 2 .23 Can anyone tell me which specs to use and/or explain this compensated wavelength issue? Thank you, Tim KI6VBY

European Space Weather Week: Reduced fee for Radio Amateurs

Neil PA9N ------------------ The sixth European Space Weather Week will take place in Brugge, Belgium, from Monday 16th November to Friday 20th November 2009. The ESWW meetings aim to bring together diverse communities working on all elements of space weather with a strong focus on user involvement. This year’s meeting will discuss recent advances in both scientific and applications based domains and how these advances relate to user needs. This year the space weather tutorial and one of the plenary sessions will focus on issues relating to space weather effects on communications. With this in mind, the programme committee has made a special arrangement for radio hams who would like to attend the meeting. Radio amateurs with a license to operate are also welcome to the conference and will get a discount. Radio Amateurs are requested to send a copy of their license to esa.conference.bureau(a)esa.int within one week after registration. Registration as a Radio Amateur includes access to scientific sessions on Tuesday and Wednesday and tutorial only. The reduced fee is 50 €. College Satellite nights, Thursday night

Don't forget to work the Thursday evening passes and listen for, and work, college club stations. On AO-51 we'll be on the QRP transponder. AO-7 should be in mode B that evening. HAMSAT has been little used and is a great bird, with some nice passes that evening. Activity will be centered on passes starting Thursday Oct. 1st 22:00 UTC through 05:00 UTC. U of Kansas (K0KU), Stanford (W6YX), UF Gators (W4DFU) and Rochester IT (K2GXT) have already confirmed they will be on. Other clubs have been active during past events including U Michigan, Michigan State U, U Kentucky. U Arkansas, Naval Academy, and others. Please give college station priority on the QRP transponder on AO-51 that evening and let them work everyone they can. No good deed should go unrewarded.look for an award certificate program in the near future for working college club stations on satellite. AMSAT Symposium

This is a reminder that the AMSAT Symposium is quickly approaching. It takes place next weekend (9-11 OCT) at the BWI Sheraton and you're invited! This Symposium marks the 40th Anniversary of AMSAT and we'll be celebrating this significant milestone along with looking forward to the next 40 years. Great stuff, Mark. I'm an old, dusty assembler, and later a C programmer. Used to program for fun, then for profit, then after a few years of life I looked around and the art had snuck ahead of me. I used to hack up the PREDICT code for my own devious purposes, and just to have fun with the source. When posting to AMSAT-BB, the high lighting and underlining must have been stripped. Here is what I high lighted and underlined. 1. FO-29 is in the "high shade rate period" now. 2. "high shade rate" and by the rise of the internal resistance of the deterioration of the battery and by the influence of the temperature of the battery. 3.it is designed to turn on a transmitter automatically. However malfunction occurred for this function in 2007. 4. The transponder has been worked without control command from control station from summer of 2008. 5. ***From this , We decided that we make the operation schedule plan, and manage the limit of the operative number of times in one day like last time to keep the electricity income and expenditure untill improve the "shade rate" which is in January, 2010. 6. Those universities that are especially interested in the natural science side might jump at this, and doubly so if they knew that they'd have an international APRS network collecting their data. We could play the role of IntelSat for a change :-) KD6OZH's mentioning of a 1200 bps voice codec is very interesting, too. I see that DSTAR's AMBE is down to 2000 with error correction, and Speex operates down to 2000, too, though I think without error correction. (I find the latter much more engaging as a ham, since it is open source.) It would be a hoot to do a voice conference over the Internet using a sample of low bitrate codecs and just get a sense of what might be possible. One downside of voice is that it would occupy the transponder far more than messaging, and Bob's favorable power calculations would need to be estimated downwards. I guess another aspect of the cubesat approach is that the cost of failure is much lower. If a low bitrate audio codec doesn't really work well, it would be a less expensive enterprise and easier to chalk up to experience. 73, Bruce VE9QRP

This is the place that we frequently sent out to for Subs at all hours when working late at Westinghouse - BWI in the 70s and 80s. We nicknamed it "Grease and Mayonaise" but it was excellent. The last time I ate there it had expanded into a very good full service restaurant, but still retined the Sub Shop as well.
