Rare Grids and Gridpeditions

It's great to see the renewed interest in activating "rare" grids on the birds. If you don't have a particular grid worked and confirmed, it is a "rare" grid. It is important for all of us to recognize those who are operating "portable" in a grid away from their home. They are only there for a short period of time so giving them the frequency is the thing to do. If you hear a callsign that you have not worked before, call that person rather than someone you just talked with on the last pass. We need to encourage the new people as they are the future of the amateur space program. Use the portable designation if you are operating away from home so others will know that this might be a new grid. We have enjoyed a long stretch of AO51 being in the V/U mode on 435.300. After the end of the month, the bird will be in sunlight continuously and that will allow higher power and other modes to be used. If AO51 is in a non-V/U voice mode, as it was for a 2 week period not long ago, grid dxpeditions are not going to be worthwhile. If you plan a vacation ahead of time, you might find later that the bird will not be in a v/u voice mode during your trip. The Operations Team sets the schedule and they do it based upon requests from the membership for alternate modes. Personally I think that there should always be a 435.300/145.92 mode available. Everyone who is interested in chasing grids or activating grids away from their home should email KO4MA and request that V/U voice remain on. You cannot plan anything if you don't know if AO51 will be in V/U voice during your trip. The schedule is based upon input from the membership and if we don't make our requests, those that want the bird in other modes (both transponders) will most likely be served. The second transponder is fine for other modes but there are probably some modes that cannot be activated if V/U voice is to remain on. Maybe Drew can clarify this for us. There are some that would say that there are other satellites that can be used for FM voice. Very true, however, if you are out there trying to activate grids, not having AO51 available is a handicap. You spend a lot of money to do it and then have 1/3 of your potential air time, on the best FM satellite up there, not available to you. It makes no sense. I'm on L band now and will have S band RX running soon. I enjoy setting up for different modes. But after you work a few stations in those modes, and fine tune your equipment, there's not much left. Chasing grids never ends. There's always one more to work. If you are interested in working or activating new grids, please email KO4MA and request that AO51 always have one V/U voice transponder available. There is no guarantee that this will always work, but if there are no emails, it is likely that there will be more periods of non V/U voice on AO51. John K8YSE

WD9EWK's road trip - Wednesday (22 July) report

Hello! After 7 days and over 1905 miles/3066km on the road, I'm back home in Phoenix. Today was mainly a travel day, not wanting to make a late drive home tonight before returning to work tomorrow morning. I worked two passes to help some operators get QSOs with certain grids, had lunch in between the two passes, and drove about 400 miles/640km today. I started the day in Mesquite, Nevada - a small town along the I-15 freeway at the Nevada/Arizona border. Before leaving that area, I worked one SO-50 pass around 1449 UTC from the DM26xt/DM36at line just inside northwestern Arizona. DM26 is on regularly, but not DM36. I figured I'd make one pass from here, handing out more QSOs from there. I was in another part of DM36 in late May, operating from Grand Canyon Village. In 2008, I worked from 3 different spots in DM36 as part of my July 2008 road trip along Arizona's borders with Utah and Nevada. I worked 7 stations across the US and Canada, not a big number but pretty good for a weekday morning. After the SO-50 pass, I made the hour-long drive down to Las Vegas. I met Jeff WB3JFS, a Las Vegas resident and satellite ham, for lunch. Jeff had told me earlier that he had never worked anyone in his home grid (DM26), but had worked the other grid that covers the southern end of metropolitan Las Vegas (DM25). I said I would try to help him, and planned to work from the DM25jx/DM26ja grid boundary where I stopped last year. Jeff gave me some QSL cards for QSOs we had made earlier in my current road trip, saving the postage for those cards. :-) After lunch, Jeff went home and I went to the south end of the Las Vegas "Strip" for an AO-27 pass around 2029 UTC. In 7 minutes on AO-27, I worked 15 stations - including WB3JFS - from the DM25/DM26 grid boundary. I realize that these grids would not be the most rare of the grids in the state of Nevada. I was not intending on going to those rare spots on this trip. This stop, and the earlier stop in DM26/DM36, were made to help others specifically looking for at least one of the grids at those stops - and they were not out of my way for today's travels. After the AO-27 pass, I dismantled my portable station and stowed the gear. It was time to return home and wrap up this trip. Other than s-l-o-w traffic passing over Hoover Dam on the Colorado River, the drive was OK. Some rain near Hoover Dam and near Phoenix, otherwise a quiet drive where I could set the cruise control on my truck. I made a quick stop at Hoover Dam to get some photos of Lake Mead (the water level was much lower than I have ever seen it in person), and held my camera out the window to get pictures of the new bridge being built over the river that will replace Hoover Dam as the way to cross the river at that point on the Arizona/Nevada border. I will post a longer report covering all of my trip in a few days. So far, I know I made over 250 QSOs throughout the trip, working from 14 grids (DM25, DM26, DM35, DM36, DM37, DM38, DM45, DM46, DM47, DM48, DM49, DM57, DM58, DM59) in 3 states (Arizona, Nevada, Utah). In between the two AO-27 passes from DM58/DM59 in eastern Utah on Monday afternoon, I made a quick road trip to the Utah/Colorado border. I stopped at the state line to take some photos, then went to the first exit on I-70 in Colorado before returning to the DM58/DM59 boundary for the later pass. If you worked me during the past week - going back to last Thursday, the day before the hamfest in Williams AZ started - and would like QSL cards for those QSOs, please e-mail me with a listing of the QSOs. If you're in the log, you'll get a card (or multiple cards). Since I operated from so many unique locations, I will need a little bit of time to prepare cards. As I have tried to do in the last year with my QSL cards, all of these cards will have descriptions of the location for each QSO including the grid(s), name of the county I was in during the QSO, and an image of my GPS receiver's display showing the latitude and longitude for that location. I will include the GPS image even for those cards where my location was not on a grid boundary, to keep all of these cards similar in terms of the information I am presenting for my location. Was this a fun trip for me? Yes! I've never driven beyond the Arizona/Utah border area in Utah, and it was fun to see more of that state. Getting on the air a lot over the past week, whether I was at the hamfest or on the road after the hamfest closed, was great. Generally there was good cooperation on passes, allowing many to get QSOs with me in these different locations. Meeting WB3JFS in Las Vegas today was a nice surprise, and I was happy to help Jeff and a few others get QSOs with new grids throughout this trip. Time for bed. Good night, and 73! Rare Grids in South Dakota

I can do some of the grids around me. DN84lc is the grid I live in. Right now it would have to be the FM sats. Rig would be my FT-60R and Elk antenna.. Also it would have to be during the day while my wife is at work. How would I notify everyone? I'd hate to go some place and not work anyone. Just getting ideas right now. CW anyone?

Hello all, I'm in the middle of a short trip to IS0 land, I'm using the satellite antennas (2 x lindenblad RHCP) I made last december. Operations here can be almost all the time in CW, due to low signals obtainable with omni antennas and 20m RG-213 on both bands. During a few passes of VO-52 I can also work SSB in the best part of the pass and the high passes of AO-27 are also sometimes workable in FM (made a couple of contacts, amazing for omni antennas in the crowded europe). Results are really good if you ask me, but I almost always call on the linear birds for almost all the pass (2-3 degrees are already workable usually) in CW making one contact if I'm lucky. So what's wrong with CW on satellites? I hear a lot of SSB stations, but uplinking in SSB is hopeless on FO-29 and AO-07 and difficult most of the time on VO-52. I think it also would be possible to try a contact with Canada on Oscar-7, if anyone feels like trying a sked, just drop me an email. Best 73 de IS0/IZ8DWF

WD9EWK's road trip - Tuesday (21 July) report

Hi! Another day on the road... worked from 4 grids, drove almost 400 miles/640km, and still having fun. Only one more day on the road, before I'm back home and back to the "real world". I started the day at Nephi, a small city at the south end of the Salt Lake City metropolitan area in DM49bq. I woke up early, and saw that I had an overhead AO-51 pass around 1347 UTC. I decided to try that, before hitting the road. I drove a couple of miles/km from my motel, and proceeded to work 10 stations. A nice start to a busy day. Before the next AO-51 pass came by around 1529 UTC, I drove south to the town of Redmond in central Utah. I was in grids DM48bx and DM49ba at this location, where I worked 4 passes from here - one on AO-51, then two SO-50 passes, and finally a shallow AO-27 pass. The AO-51 pass and one of the SO-50 passes (the one tha went down the Pacific coast) didn't have a lot of stations on it, where the other SO-50 pass and that shallow AO-27 pass were busier. I worked a total of 22 QSOs from here, and took time between a couple of passes to survey my next operating location... I drove about 15 minutes south from Redmond to another small town, Sigurd. This town straddles the DM38/DM48 grid boundary, and I stopped at DM38xu/DM48au near an electrical substation on Substation Road. Looking at a map with either Maidenhead grids or latitude/longitude showed me I was around the spot where 4 grids came together (DM38, DM39, DM48, DM49), but I would not be able to get to that spot. There has been some recent activity from DM39 (I've worked AC7SU in DM39 a couple of times in the past 5 or 6 months), so I decided to skip that grid and focus on the others in that area. >From the DM38/DM39 boundary, I worked a pair of AO-27 passes. Eight QSOs were made on the first (eastern) pass, and 4 more on the western pass. These passes were not as busy as the passes I worked yesterday from DM58/DM59 in eastern Utah, but at least I worked everyone on these passes that wanted to make a QSO with me. After the last AO-27 pass, I went from avoiding the freeways to actively seeking out the I-70 and I-15 freeways. I used them to move toward southern Utah, and a spot on a frontage road along I-15 on the DM37px/DM38pa boundary. Just like I had on my first AO-51 pass this morning, there was an overhead pass around 0100 UTC this evening that I worked from this spot. Thirteen QSOs were made from DM37/DM38, as cars and trucks were zooming by on the I-15 freeway next to my operating location. I had planned to travel as far south as St. George in southwest Utah and stopping there for the night. When I got back on the I-15 freeway after the last AO-51 pass, I thought about what I might be doing tomorrow, and decided not to stop at St. George. I drove about 40 miles/64km more, reaching the town of Mesquite just into Nevada. For tomorrow (Wednesday), I am only planning to attempt a couple of passes. There is an SO-50 pass around 1448 UTC that I will try to work from somewhere in DM36 a few miles/km up the road from where I am staying, across the border from Mesquite in northwestern Arizona. I was in DM36 a few weeks back, when I worked from the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. This time, I might be able to park on the DM26/DM36 boundary for this pass. With mountains to the north and east of that area, I may only have a few minutes near the middle of the pass (midpoint of this pass for me is approximately 1454 UTC) to work stations. After lunch, I will be on the 2029 UTC AO-27 pass from somewhere in grid DM26. Possibly the DM25/DM26 boundary on the south end of Las Vegas, the spot where I worked from last year on that road trip. Once this pass is done, I will hit the highway and get home. As of tonight, I have driven almost 1500 miles/2500km, and have a few hundred miles/km more to go tomorrow. I worked from 4 grids (DM37, DM38, DM48, DM49) today, to go with the 4 other Utah grids I've worked from already (DM47, DM57, DM58, DM59) and the two Arizona grids around Williams AZ last week (DM35 and DM45). I've worked lots of QSOs, and I know that some of the calls are in my log a few times for several of these grids. This trip alone won't make those 8 Utah grids significantly less "rare", but at least there will soon be QSL cards in the hands of some satellite operators for them. Good night, and 73! Hey everyone, Patrick just called to say that he will NOT be on the 23:18-ish UTC pass of AO-51. He has no visibility to the east in the area he's in. However, he WILL be on the next orbit of AO-51, which covers much of the western U.S. That pass is about 00:58 UTC tonight. Evidence of moon landings....!

Which is more reasonable: 1. That a 40 year grand conspiracy involving literally thousands of people from multiple, antagonistic countries, could pull off and maintain the illusion that nobody has walked on the moon. Recognizing that the Soviet Union and China both would have benefitted greatly for exposing such fakery, and recognizing that the US government by itself - let alone all the other people, organizations, and governments that have a stake in it - can't keep even a little secret like "I went to Argentina to get a piece on the side". Recognizing all the photographs, the rocks, the satellites, the orbiters, the explosion of technology and so forth. Recognizing that the governments in question have been unable, in the same time period, to keep their leaders from being shot at by simple lunatics, and that those governments haven't even been able to construct a convincing lie about WMD in the middle-east: something that really, everyone would believe with little effort? OR 2. That men have actually been on the moon as reported? The whole idea that the moon landings were faked is, quite simply, weapons-grade stupid. It flies in the face of logic and reason. No moon-conspiracy theorist has ever been able to produce a shred of evidence that anything has been faked... a task that should be INCREDIBLY easy given the number of people that have to be involved to this day. Scientists, on the other hand have produced photos, rocks, and mountains of other evidence, not the least of which is the dozen people who have actually been there, a good many of which are still walking around. People who still tout this moon-landing-fake conspiracy are nutters, plain and simple. There are many places I'd expect to find woo-woo conspiracy believers, but never on the AMSAT list. Can we please put this issue to bed and go back to satellites and radio now. -VE3OIJ

All, First- If you want to get in touch with an officer or a board member, email them directly. Callsign(a)amsat.org almost always works, or go to the webpage and use the link next to their name. If it is time sensitive or very important, call the office and Martha will direct you to the appropriate person and probably even give you their phone number. Second- If you can, try investigating the question a bit before immediately passing it off. I can tell you I am running at about 150% with AMSAT things that require my attention. Not to sound crass, but at least 75% of the email questions I get could be solved with Google and 30 seconds of your time. I love helping people and helping AMSAT, but sometimes folks ought to just look on their own first. It feels better when you get the answer that way. 73, Drew KO4MA

I write this just after the liftoff from the moon +40 years. Many thanks to amsat and to nasa for the thrilling participation in the moon landing - again,+40. Last night as the *live* audio came over the 'net I sms/texted my (grown up) kids as if it were live - GO for powered descent, 44000 ft, 60 seconds etc - and they really got excited about it! "Sorry what?" "Where are you getting this from?" "Wicked!" My teenage son said how he could tell his son (if and when he will ever have one, hi) how his father and grandfather heard and saw it live, and how he experienced it "live" with his own father: and so the generations go on. and to get a picture live from space, with the voice of JFK - another story - Buzz, and Neil, made a superb evening and worthy of such an anniversary. many thanks andy G0SFJ

AO-51/Apollo 11 audio/images

I managed to dust off the Arrow antenna and my trusty little VX-3R (at the last minute I couldn't locate my TH-D7A, which I like a little better, but the VX-3R works) and aimed it at the sky. I had a bit of trouble with the manual tracking, but I recorded about 10 minutes, netting four different attempts at the SSTV image. Hi, Just a bit of evidence for your consideration: Valentina Tereshkova and Valery Bykovsky were in Coventry England a few years ago and I was privilaged to be amongst the guests at a dinner held in their honour. During the after dinner conversation they were asked about the authenticity of the Amarican moon landings. Yes, we used an old TS-408/U (military version of a hp 608A signal generator) a polaplexer, and Bill Burns 8-foot trailer mounted dish. We got good S/N ratio on the carrier, but couldn't recover information from the sidebands. If I remember correctly, the downlink was about 2287 MHz. Apollo 11 transmission on AO-51 tonight

Hi! I was able to hear the transmission on two passes tonight (0000 and 0139 UTC). The first pass was a tough one to hear, as I was driving on US-6 between I-70 and Provo near the DM49/DN40 grid boundary, with lots of rocks and mountains all around me. I could hear the middle 3 or 4 minutes of that pass with little difficulty using my IC-T7H HT and the Larsen 2m/70cm mobile whip on the roof of my truck. For the later pass at 0139 UTC, I was using my normal FM satellite station (IC-2720H with Elk Antennas 2m/70cm log periodic) outside the motel I'm in tonight located in DM49bq. I recorded the 0139 UTC pass, since I did not get my laptop set up to receive the SSTV signals in real time. I have not fed the SSTV audio into my laptop yet, but will do that in the next day or so to see the picture. The four audio recordings were all very appropriate for the transmission, and I'm sure the photo will be as well - when I get to see it from my recording. It has been nice to see the satellite activity commemorating this event over the past few days - VE3MOON, K5E, and the AO-51 transmission this evening. I've had the chance to work both of those special-event stations while on the road, and will appreciate receiving those QSLs. Glad to see radio- and satellite-related chatter return to the -BB. Hi! Another day, another few hundred miles/km and more QSOs for the satellite log. With the special transmission on AO-51 this evening, I worked only SO-50 and AO-27 passes earlier today. Still a good day with more sightseeing and radio work, plus I'm setting up for a busy and fun day tomorrow. Before I left Monticello in eastern Utah this morning, I worked one SO-50 pass at 1530 UTC from the DM57/DM58 line where I had worked from on Sunday evening via AO-51. I surprised myself with working 10 stations on a weekday morning pass, including the VE3MOON special-event station in Ottawa. After that pass, I started northward on US-191 toward grid DM59 near the I-70 freeway. There was a VO-52 pass around 1650 UTC I had thought about working, but I could not. I was in Moab, and that town is in the middle of a small canyon with high walls that would have severely limited the time I could work on that pass. I kept going north, and got clear of Moab in time for SO-50's second pass I worked at 1710 UTC. Just before the 1710 UTC SO-50 pass, I made it about 15 miles/25km north of Moab, back onto a clear spot without hills or rocks blocking my view to the west. A decent pass, even with just 3 QSOs. This stop was not on a grid boundary, in grid DM58dr, but was not terribly far from where I would work AO-27 in the afternoon. I found a spot near the I-70 freeway on a county road, the old US-6 highway that runs parallel with the Union Pacific railway in that part of Utah. This spot was north of the town of Cisco, in grids DM58ix and DM59ia. I planned to work two, and possibly 3, AO-27 passes from here. I did not have a clear enough view to the west to work a very shallow pass (maximum 4 degrees elevation) at 2307 UTC, so I worked the earlier passes at 1946 and 2127 UTC. The 1946 UTC pass was up only to 17 degrees maximum elevation out there, but that was high enough to clear some hills east of the spot. I had no problems hearing the full 7 minutes of the pass, and worked 13 stations in that time. The pass was not as chaotic as the eastern AO-27 pass I worked on Sunday from DM47/DM57. Not a bad effort for a weekday pass. After this pass, I drove east on I-70 about 20 miles/32km to the Colorado state line, and then went a couple of miles/km into Colorado so I could turn around and get back to DM58ix/DM59ia in time for the 2127 UTC pass. At 2127 UTC, there were stations spread out through the entire 7-minute pass. I logged 12 QSOs with stations up and down western North America, and as far east as Louisiana and Ohio. Even though there were almost as many stations on the 2127 UTC pass as on the 1946 UTC pass, everyone who was on the later pass who wanted to work me had the chance. Since I was not going to stick around for the 2307 UTC pass, I decided to make a long drive toward the Salt Lake City area for tonight. This would set me up well for tomorrow's travels and sightseeing in central and southern Utah. I hope to be on from several grids from the following list: DM37, DM38, DM47, DM48, and DM49. I am currently in the north end of grid DM49, but with tall mountains immediately east of here I will go south before getting on tomorrow morning. I should be on SO-50 passes starting around 1600 UTC, AO-27 in the afternoon, and (if it is returned to the normal 145.920/435.300 FM voice repeater as planned) AO-51 in the evening. Although I strive to operate from grid boundaries to maximize the number of grids I can give out with my QSOs, that may not always be possible based on surroundings and/or conditions on or beside the roads and highways I will travel. I hope to be at least as far south as St. George in southwestern Utah, or even as far south as Las Vegas, tomorrow night. I need to get back home on Wednesday evening, so tomorrow will probably be the last full day for my radio activities. I've driven over 1000 miles/1600km since I left Phoenix last Thursday, and - including the 3 days late last week in and around Williams AZ - have worked from 7 different grids on this trip. I also caught the DePaul University HALO-II launch this morning (July 20) from Kankakee, IL due to the APRS beacon on board .. when I saw the Icon on my TM-D710 (somebody thank WB4APR for the thousandth time for this jewel). No announcement seen, this balloon appears to have NO X-band repeater ... just university experiments. It headed south along I-57 for about 2-1/2 hours and around 80,000 feet -- not as high as earlier SpaceJam-3 launch. Greg w9gb Had a great time with W9YJ-11 balloon launch. Thanks to who ever posted the info on the Amsat BB. I am the station in Fond du Lac, WI. EN53ss that made several contacts through the balloon repeater after it got above 50,000 ft. It did recover its latitude/longitude and direction about 20 minutes later (near Oakwood, IL and I-74), but never its altitude. Landed south of Catlin, IL I have MS Power Point slides of the OpenAPRS.net APRS tracks for both balloons. You can go to OpenAPRS.net, enter the SSID for each balloon and request data over past 2 days. That will show you the actual tracks. Greg w9gb

Received the AMSAT-NA BoD 2009 Ballot in day's US Mail (July 18). I perceive inconsistencies (potential confusion) in the Ballot Instructions and 2009 AMSAT Ballot. Letter from AMSAT BoD, first paragraph .... "This year there are four positions up for election." Leroy, Should I wait until you're satisfied that the Apollo 11 mission and all surrounding the Apollo program was NOT, collectively, a hoax before I mail your QSL card for the contact you seemed excited to make yesterday on SO-50 with K5E? I mean ... who would celebrate a hoax? I was born in 1956 and grew up in the middle of the Cold War and the Space Race. I am insulted by the "moon deniers," as an earlier poster characterized them. They confound me on two levels: 1 - Collectively, they fail to mention that America's one true adversary in the race to the moon - Russia - has never raised an iota of skepticism over the Apollo program's validity. Given the access to the audio, photographic and video record of the program, the fact that the Apollo program's achievements stand without challenge backed by significant evidence on the part of the single entity with the most to gain by exposing such a charade suggests there is nothing to expose. I suppose you can claim that Russia was in on it, too (i.e., "if only the high up know about the hoax and the miss-direction - then a hoax on a massive scale can be pulled off"). Yeah ... right. 2 - Collectively, you fail to include the deaths of Gus Grissom, Ed White and Roger Chaffee in the Apollo 1 capsule. Since the Apollo program succeeded in completing multiple moon landings, their deaths cannot be attributed to a "Capricorn One scenario." How and why did that tragic accident become a part of the hoax? Were Grissom, White and Chaffee the inaugural members of the federal witness protection program? Oh, wait ... their deaths triggered the launch of the hoax because of the dangers involved. Yeah ... right. Hi all, A perfect evening here in Wales ( UK ) for the pass - No wind or rain and not to hot. I copied the audio and SSTV just using my Kenwood THD7 and Arrow antenna with excellent satisfaction. How would you build a stage large enough to film it on that could pumped down to a hard vacuum? AO-51 Special event

Excellent the pass received few minutes ago with my home made arrow antenna on my vacation site by the Mediterranean shore at JN00DF in Spain. The maximum elevation was only 8 degrees but I could record the voice message and SSTV transmision comfortably up to three times meanwhile the sat passed above my deep sea blue horizon.... I was so excited that I was near to start to shout out!! Now I will try to decode the SSTV and listen carefully to the voice message for writing it down for QSL details. Congratulations and thanks to control team for this historical event. A great leap indeed 40 years ago that now we can live again. Thanks again and good luck. 73, EA4DUT, Angel

Hi AMSATs, The news is full again of the moon landings, where NASA claims to have new evidence, which makes me laugh again. I have the same idea like LeRoy, KD8BXP. When the information is only from one source it is not reliable at all, every scientist should know. This doesn't mean that I state no man has been on the moon, for me it is just not clear. I would like to see pictures from another nations satellite, in higher resolution. I believe we will soon know, as there are several countries wanting to go to the moon. I am looking forward to their pictures and the state of the equipment left on the moon, in case the landings were no film studio work :o) For the moment I keep it more close to the earth with my small transponder work, Maybe in the future there will be a chance to have a moon-ponder :o) 73 William ---

Hello! After driving almost 500 miles/800km today, I went from the hamfest in Williams AZ up to Monticello in eastern Utah. A lot of ground covered, and lots of contacts from 4 different grids (DM46, DM47, DM57, DM58). This morning, I made it to the Arizona/Utah border near Monument Valley after leaving Williams at 0430 local (1130 UTC). The DM46vx/DM47va grid boundary runs just north of the signs marking the state line, and I parked in a parking lot at the intersection of US-163 and Monument Valley Road (the road leading to the entrance for Monument Valley Park). SO-50 went by at 1642-1655 UTC, and I was able to log QSOs with 14 stations in the US and Mexico during that pass. A good start for the day. Since I had not planned to leave that early, I figured I might still be in Arizona for that SO-50 pass. Instead, I was able to move about 15 miles/24km northeast of my location for the first SO-50 pass. I worked a later SO-50 pass at 1823 UTC that went down the Pacific coast, and then worked two AO-27 passes, from the DM47xb/DM57ab grid boundary just south of US-163. Six stations went into the log for the western SO-50 pass, followed by 17 on the first AO-27 pass I had at 2015 UTC. The second AO-27 pass at 2155 UTC put 10 more in the log. A total of 33 QSOs through the 3 passes at the DM47/DM57 line. In between these passes, I drove between Monument Valley and the small town of Mexican Hat, along the San Juan River in that part of Utah. Lots of beautiful scenery, even without going into the Monument Valley park (a park operated by the Navajo tribe, complete with admission fee). After the last AO-27 pass, I started driving north. I planned to operate at the DM57/DM58 boundary on the AO-51 passes at 0038 and 0219 UTC passes, but ended up getting on an earlier AO-51 pass as a bonus. I stopped about halfway between the DM56/DM57 and DM57/DM58 boundaries in grid DM57ck along US-191 for the pass at 2303 UTC. Out here in Utah, that was a pass with maximum elevation of 4 or 5 degrees. I found a nice spot that had no obstructions, and was able to work that pass. The 2303 UTC AO-51 pass was the only pass of the 7 I worked today where I was not on a grid boundary. Even though that was the case, I was able to log 8 QSOs. I was able to hear the 435.300 MHz downlink on that pass when the satellite had an elevation of at least .5 degree! It was easier to hear at that low elevation than on other passes at similar elevations when AO-51 had a much higher maximum elevation. As I had hoped, I was able to get to the DM57/DM58 grid boundary for the 0038 and 0219 UTC AO-51 passes. I had hoped to park along US-191, to make it easy on me. Unfortunately, the highway descended a few hundred feet where there were rocks on both east and west sides of the road. I went east of US-191 on a dirt road, and found a spot on the grid boundary (DM57ix/DM58ia), and that worked very well. I logged 15 contacts on the 0038 UTC pass, then 6 more on the 0219 UTC pass. Tomorrow (Monday, 20 July) will be a lighter day in terms of operating and driving. With AO-51 being used for the special Apollo 11 transmission in the evening, I will confine my efforts to the SO-50 and AO-27 passes. There is an SO-50 pass around 1530 UTC that I may work from the DM57/DM58 boundary again, and then move northward and work the following SO-50 pass (around 1711 UTC) somewhere else in grid DM58. For AO-27 passes, I may try to get to the DM58/DM59 line for the passes at 1946 and 2127 UTC. If I can get to a spot with a very good view of the western sky, the shallow (around 5 degrees maximum elevation) AO-27 pass at 2307 UTC might be a possibility. I *may* try VO-52 around 1654 UTC, depending on where I am at that time (probably somewhere in DM58). Then I will try to hear the special transmission on AO-51 like everyone else. Good night, and 73! I am having a problem with my home made Beam for 435/437. This may/June the SWR went to 5+ I'm going to get it down and take a look at all the connections and to gama match's. What is the best way to set the gama match's? I have access to an MFJ 269 for adjustments. Also what set of elements should be forward ? They are offset by 1/2 wave. Should the vert or horz. be the forward set? Make any difference? Also my ts 2000 went down just before field day and needs to go in been quiet around here for too long. Marv N0FJP

WD9EWK's Utah road trip starts tomorrow...

Hi! I'm getting set for my drive into southern Utah tomorrow morning. I apologize for not showing up on passes today. Lots of people in the hall at the hamfest, and storm clouds in the afternoon kept me off the air. A good two-day hamfest, including a quick visit by "Uncle" Larry WA6DIR stopping in Williams on his way to New Mexico. Thanks to the Amateur Radio Council of Arizona for allowing AMSAT to be in the main exhibit hall for the hamfest! So far, I'm still planning to be around DM47 and/or DM57 for the AO-27 passes in the afternoon. Maybe even on the grid boundary, if there is a safe place to stop there. After that, I hope to get as far north as DM58 near the Utah/Colorado state line for the AO-51 passes tomorrow night. Since SO-50 passes are in the mid- to late- morning, I may be able to get on those passes on my way toward DM57 (either from DM46 in Arizona or DM47 in Utah, on the Navajo Nation reservation). TH-D7(G) plug size?

Hi all, I've been looking over the manual of the TH-D7(G) HT and I can't seem to find any information on the size of the plug used to supply DC input to this unit. WD9EWK @ Williams AZ hamfest - Friday, 17 July

Hi! Day 1 of the two-day hamfest is complete. Not many attended the presentation I had, but I was able to work several passes throughout the day from outside the hamfest's exhibit hall. I was on all 3 FM satellites, plus a couple of VO-52 passes in the morning. Thanks to all the stations across North America who made contacts with WD9EWK during the day. While I was on those passes, I heard WA8SME and several of the teachers attending his ARRL Teacher's Institute session in northern California. It was very nice to hear - and work - them. Saturday will have more activity from the hamfest. I will try to get on more passes throughout the day. If you hear me on, please give me a call. For VO-52 in the morning, I will be somewhere around 145.910 or 145.915 MHz USB on that satellite's downlink. I'm expecting the crowds listening in on these passes will be larger, since there will be more attending the hamfest on a weekend instead of at the end of the workweek. The hamfest closes at 1700 local (0000 UTC), and I do not plan on being on additional passes from this area in the evening. I'll need to pack up my hamfest stuff and get ready for a few days on the road. I'm planning an early departure from here on Sunday morning, with the plan to be around DM47/DM57 in Utah on Sunday afternoon's AO-27 passes. 73! I grew up watching him. My Mom used to let me stay home "sick" from grade school so I could watch the Mercury, and then the Gemini missions, as long as they were only in space ONE day! I saw him cry when Kennedy was assassinated, and watched him choke up when Apollo 11 landed on the Moon. I didn't always agree with him, but I respected him. He was from a different world than the "Journalists" of today. Good bye, old friend, and may you rest in peace. NRO interest in CubeSat

Hello all, I just ran across a set of slides from the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) entitled "CubeSat Experiments (QbX)". It appears the NRO is interested in the possibilities a CubeSat could their organization. As for AMSAT, have we approached the NRO related to what expertise AMSAT could provide? And more importantly, would it be possible to either gain access to a launch opportunity or include one or more of our (RF?) modules into one of their CubeSats? It just seems that if the NRO is serious about pursuing CubeSat, AMSAT should be involved. Michael
