I'll be in the mostly wet FM13 grid square tomorrow for both morning SO50 plus at least the first AO27 passes tomorrow (Thursday). I will probably stick around and operate from there during the second AO27 pass as well, but that's not for sure yet. >From there, I'll spend tomorrow night in Charleston, SC, so that I can run another mostly wet grid square, FM02, on the 18/2327Z SO50 pass as well as Friday morning's pass at 1339Z. After that, I'll hit the road and head for south Florida (EL96) before returning home to EM70 and tackle the QSLs for last weekend's "Delaware Day". 73, Jim, ND9M / VQ9JC Southport, NC / FM03

Short of it is I don't know. I don't have a 5500. I would suggest you call Yaesu @ 1-714-827-7600 and ask if part #Q9000404 is listed for that rotor. They can answer that question for you. While you are at it as I did not think to ask would you inquire if they have any info on who made the potentiometer in the AZ and EL rotors for them and do they have a manufactures part number for it. I believe they are the same part. I am sure there are lots of folks here that would like that info. Pots for 5400

I'm throwing this out for what it may be worth... I now have two 5500's and have had no trouble for years. Before that I had two 5400's and had trouble with both on the pots...the connections were rivets, and I opened up both and soldered the rivets, solved the problems on both... Due to several comments concerning attempts to contact Yaesu have been met with no contact or delays, I thought I'd pass on the info I made available to another on this list. I have found that by using the email/internet approach first then following up via phone to finalize my purchases seem to be reasonably successful. Hopefully this will help others here on the list. No, The same part is used in the three versions of the rotor. The part in the control box is common to all the control boxes. Better said is the part for the rotors is S8101823 and the part for the control boxes is Q9000404. I looked around on the net for a substitute 500 ohm pot for the rotor. I finally called Yaesu and got tech support after a long wait. The potentiometer in the 5400, 5500 and 5600 are the same part. The order department still has the old number for the 5400 which caused them to say they did not stock them anymore. Hello All, I would like to inform to all, one more surprise by AO-7. Yesterday ( Orbit: 58267 - 16/06/2009 - 20:15:22 UTC) I heard the station of Andre, ZS2BK, in cw, via AO-7 in GI84ow. The distance is 4805 miles (7694 km). Congratullations Andre. A little more than the contact ( ssb ) that was made with Jean-Jacques, ON7EQ. According to Roland, PY4ZBZ, the area of coverage of AO7 is approximately 7,904 Km. The contacts are close to the limit of A0-7. I hope soon keep in cw (or perhaps ssb ) contact with Andre and are open to any Sked way AO-7 or another satellite. Thanks all . The recording began at 20:14:47 (UTC) and 20:15:22 (UTC) heard the first signal cw, in the frequency of 145.940 MHz, the last sign I heard 20:15:52 UTC. U bracket for G-5400/G-5500

CP6 Decoding

I am troubleshooting a CP-6 decoding problem. I have excellent copy on CP-6. Keps are good. Signal is strong but no decode. Equipment is IC-910H and AEA DSP2232. I checked everything out with APRS FM copy on 144.390 using hyperterminal - good copy in FM packet. PC & TNC use com 3 - 9600,8.N,1 to communicate. PC flowcontrol is hardware. DSP2232 is set for MOD p12 (p1 1200bps). I do not see any TNC lockup during data bursts. Radio is set for LSB when tracking CP-6. I even tried using hyperterminal connection in lieu of CP-6 decoder. My Alinco DJ-580 met with a terrible accident and is no longer with us. Seriously, the radio was destroyed in a freak mishap. In the higher parts of the pass the range is changing relatively slowly and SO-50 should hang about more-or-less on frequency for a good couple of minutes. One of the mistakes I was making early on was not tuning far enough for Doppler, and the other was changing too quickly. It doesn't shift as fast as you might think. For the most part you won't have to worry about Doppler on transmit, but on receive it makes a huge difference. Well actually - on VHF you don't have to worry, on UHF it makes a difference. If you're using the ISS crossband repeater, that has its input on UHF and then you leave the receiver alone and tune the transmitter - much more fiddly because you *must* listen to the downlink to get it right! Headphones make all the difference, too - it's much easier to spot the change in noise when you're on the satellite. When it's transmitting received noise, you can hear it has a distinctly different tone to "empty sky". Congratulations on your first contact on the satellites! Using D710 to work the sats?

I have been playing with my homebrew antennas and the D710 I have in the van to try and work AO-51 portable and get ready for field day. The first setup in the driveway was a pretty high pass and I couldn't hear a thing. My next try was out in the country. I had the D710 hooked up again and it seemed to be deaf. There was a fellow ham there with an 817. when we hooked it up to the 436 homebrew cheep antenna, it could hear quite well. Better than the Elk antenna that I just got in fact. My question is the D710 that tight on the rec. that its not going to hear the sat if I am off frequency a little? Is there anyone on the board that is using or has used the D710 to work any of the FM sats? if so, can you e-mail me off the board with any input you may have on this set up. I'd really like to be able to work field day and I am running out of time. Thanks Marv N0FJP

Hi Leroy, Yes, that was me on the other end. I was doing a portable operation in a parking lot in Viola, Delaware / FM29 at that time. Your signal was plenty strong; too bad the Doppler got the better of you. I know the feeling all too well! Hey, I called Yaseu to order the pots and have 6 coming. Why so many you ask? I was going to order a few of the pots for the rotor as well while I was at it and found out they no longer stock them. If you have a 5400 I would call Yaesu and get some of the control box pots while they are still available. AO-51 Basement operation!!!

Hi I just try AO-51 V/S mode this morning 0700am pass. I was checking a new S band beam and it was a success nearly all the fades disappear comparing to my former WMAX beam. But i was not able to uplink to the satellite only to discover a frightening flaw in my setup i was transmitting in the same VHF port that i used for my 2.4GHZ downconverter. Too early in the morning and probably not awaken enough i immediately stopped transmitting and OH surprised the DC does not blow up? But what about the 847 finals...they survive about 10 transmission... In the middle of the pass and the DC still working i cannot switch my rig/antenna fast enough i take my HT DJ-580T with his rubber duck antenna and i punch the uplink frequency then and i called Doug KD8CAO who was calling in the void since the beginning of the pass and at the same time i heard my downlink he answered me back...My Alinco was at 5W. But the amazing part "i was in my basement..." It is a living proof that the hard part is the receiving side. My last basement record was on AO-16 50w on a dual band mobile antenna on a metal file cabinet. Tim, N3TL, we worked several times during my trip.( I just saw your post.... I have too have amnesia sometimes ;)I have your QSL cards and you are in my Log from my Trip. I agree with most of what you said but I think you misinterpreted my use of the word "sport". I meant it in the context of working the same stations over and over again, from a fixed station to another fixed station. A satellite in the end it is just a repeater with the added limit of a small working window and the usual Doppler shift. Perhaps we should call it the "art" instead of "sport" of working a satellite. I know you have perfected it very well and I have enjoyed reading many of your posts as I am locationally challenged at home living in an apartment in Chicago. Not conducive to working the birds unfortunately.... I checked QRZ.com and many of the stations I worked had similar setups to mine. Pretty much an HT and small antenna: Arrow or Elk. Also it was never my intent to hog any of the satellites for the duration of my operations. That would not be the spirit of a "True Satelliteer!" (a quote from WB2OQQ) There were many stations who needed EK99 but never managed to get through. I just wanted to make a few stations happy for a new one. I had the option of going full power but I chose not to on the FM birds. Perhaps I should next time. I am already looking forward to my vacation next year, planned from Hawaii as of now. Now that is going to an operational challenge. Sebastian, W4AS, thanks for your kind words and the opportunity to work you to. I sure wish I had your setup. I live in an apartment in Chicago so few opportunities to operate from a fixed location. I agree K5D could have done a better job in their satellite operations. At minimum a simple rotor and even a fixed antenna at 15 degrees with a two radios on all the current satellites would have worked better and would have probably provided more operators the chance to work K5D. A fulll blown setup with an AZ/EL rotor and doppler tracking would have been the perfect setup considering all the other equipment that was brought to the K5D DXpedition. It would be interesting to understand what planning was done for satellites operations for K5D. I won't speculate. FM satellites may not be the ideal satellites for a DXPedition but not everybody has the gear to work the linear brids. I think it comes down to the DX operator. FM satellites can be worked on a DXpedition. I had some pile ups on numerous passes and I was able to work many stations with some discipline and good ears. It takes an operator with contesting experience to work a pile up and maintain order. Still it is very challenging especially on such operations as K5D. Not sure what to do in the future. I agree with Tim, everybody has their own motivation on the birds. Some go after VUCC, some like to ragchew, some like to say good morning or good day to their friend a few states over, some like to chase DX, some to work new or a new rare gris, some like to be DX or be a in new grid. What ever the motivation it is all about having fun with our hobby, but it is also about operational excellence. Sebastian mentioned the many new users who get on the birds and don't operate correctly. It is up to all of us to be their elmers online and offline and make the new operators > good operators and good operators> better operators if our hobby is to survive. My antennas are from the days of AO-10 & AO-13, and I don't have the ability to change to RH, LH circular polarization; I use axial polarization. Yes there are some who are using handheld antennas with roughly the same amount of power that I am; but who's going to be heard (even with my 115 feet of LMR400)? Then there are those who believe it's a trivial task to setup a full duplex HT with a hand held antenna and be heard. It's not easy. I've tried it, and have concluded that it takes a lot of time to learn the 'tricks of the trade'. At least once a week, I hear a newcomer on one of the birds calling CQ. And people come back to them, but that newcomer can't hear them, because they aren't aware of doppler, etc. Then there are some who use 'high' power, I would say 50+ watts, but perhaps they need that power because they are using vertical antennas or eggbeaters, with 150 feet of RG-58 Radio Shack coax. And there are some who either use high power, or have defective rigs (or both), and make it difficult for others to hear due to their spurious emissions because they want to have more contacts than anyone else. So what's the answer. Those who aren't active on the birds because they are fed up will say we need a HEO. Those that are active on the birds don't have to say anything. They already know the problem. Appreciate that Pierre , But looking at the URL it does state the Operational OSCAR Satellite Status Summary.. It does not state any date, apart from a copy right that dates 2004 - 2006 that is seen as misleading maybe.. What I would like [if possible] in reality what is available / in use / in the real world…. I would like to disseminate this in brief notes in our VHF Scene in our National association magazine… PS over the years, many contacts on OSCAR 6 and 7A + 7B both modes … 7B only recommended narrow modes – but with varactor tripler slipped the odd FM contact in … Best DX out of ZL into ZL5TAA [operater Ted ZL2TAX orbit 9679] on OSCAR 7 mode B - 1976 – and KC4AAA with OSCAR 6 before that .. many others DL on a A0-40 – 7minute window – 13cm – 70cm downlink / uplink … QSL’s in the shoe box.. To the regular repetitive users of Echo Please refrain from hogging the satellite every pass for multiple contacts. I cant get into the satellite anymore and I am not going to use the amplifier to fight everyone. Sorry if you are offended but you need to be told. Hi Satelliters, Moving QTH soon and expect to be in an area where there are no external antennas permitted. Does anyone on the list have actual experience of working satellites with antennas mounted inside the roofspace? I discovered this with my 910H. If you compare the schematic with an older Icom transceiver, say the IC-756, you will notice that the voltage divider on pin 8 decreases the audio on that pin by a factor of about 50 from the IC-756! I thought of two "cures": 1. Modify the radio by replacing the offending resistor. 2. Modify my headset by bringing the line that would go to pin 8 outside the mic connector and run it to a 1/4" phone plug. I chose 2. I plug the phone plug into the nearby headphone jack when I use the headset, or pull it out to use the speaker. Works on both my 910 and 756. I was told by a person at Heil that Icom made that change to better use a TNC with the mic connector on the 910. Hi AMSATs, I am looking for some Cubesat structure that I can use for demonstration of my Ultra Small Lineat Transponder design. It should not be an expensive flight-model version. Its only for showing the idea how my transponder can be mount into a cubesat body. I can try to make some structure myself, but that takes lots of work and I need to get the precize sizes somehow. Thanks to all who replied. I'm still getting 404'ed when I try to go to ultimatecharger.com, but thanks to LeRoy, KD8BXP, I was able to get the info I needed on the controller from cached pages at http://web.archive.org/web/20070524034301/www.ultimatecharger.com/. It looks like they have most of his info from the "Dishes for Amateurs" pages, including the links that were embedded within the pages. I have an LVB tracker, but it's not assembled yet, so I thought I'd dig out my "Satellite Tracker Senior" and use that one for Field Day, as I know it works. 73, Jim KQ6EA

Got Yaesu 5400 rotor control box problem

I have hauled out my spare 5400 rotor for field day and found I have a problem. The control box is not sending accurate readings to the computer. It works fine as far as the rotor and the meter readings. I know the problem is in the control box as the one I use for everyday operation works fine with this rotor. I have checked the voltages at the transformer and they are OK so I am now suspect of one or both of the pots that adjust output voltage. I when I connect it to just one side of the rotor I can not get it to adjust to 1023 in the calibration routine in the software. Connecting it to the other side shows the same result. What I do see is a value that bounces around at random. I guess my question is does this mean that I have two bad pots or is there some common connection between the AZ/EL output that would exhibit this result. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Hello AMSATs, I just wanted to write some message on AMSAT-BB, and then I read the sad message about silent key of Robert VU2MKP. It is a great lost for the HAM world. I made several contacts with Robert via the old bird AO-10, which was a great joy. Later when I was in Bangalore, India, I got the chance to meet him in person. I was very amazed to see how he uses his radios, and laptop computer with a small stick in his mouth. He did have lots of positive energy, even when he lost lots of his body functions. A great man and ham with real ham spirit. My condolences to his family, May his soul rest in peace, William Leijenaar PE1RAH ---

ND9M: Delaware

I'll be QRV from Delaware on all passes usable with a hand-held antenna on Sunday, 14 June, starting with the first AO51 pass at 14/1140Z and ending with the last FO29 pass at 15/0226Z. All three FM birds plus FO29 and VO52 are on the agenda. There are 13 passes throughout the day that I'll be on, so there should be plenty of opportunity for contacts. Pse note that uring this trip, I'm able to do half duplex only and can manually tune only. The FM sats aren't a problem, but FO29 and VO52 will be a challenge since I can't properly adjust my TX for Doppler. I've already made a number of QSOs on the linear birds this way however, including a contact with AA5PK on FO29 tonight for his 50th state, so it's definitely "do-able". I'll leave Monday morning and head north a bit to put out FM29, then west to start running all FM0x and FM1x grids on a southbound track. CU on the birds! 73, Jim, ND9M Seaford, DE / FM28

Hello Before I do something stupid. I need to know a good way of using my 910 to switch a KJ6KO amp. In my application I am using a series of external relays to "switch around" the amp for 1296 receive. The Acc socket pin 3 seems to have a low voltage on it. I will be switching a couple of 28V relays as well a switching on the amp. Has anyone been here? 73 Bob W7LRD

Illegal - for U.S. - Commercial Equipment

Wow .. sure have faced a bunch of hostility from "friends" here (grin). No one has cited any specific US/FCC Code on any aspect of the matter - except for me, of course. I have a conference call set up for Tuesday with the FCC's OET and another department. We all can agree that "pure amateur radios" are exempt from Part 97 certification procedures. But I will be documenting - with facts and direct legal citations - whether or not U.S. hams can use non-certified commercial gear (HTs that cover 138-170 and/or 400-470) on the amateur bands in the U.S. I will not be reporting my findings here. I'll post it on my amateur site's blog. And have been approached by two publications (well, two print mags and one online mag) to write an article on this, which is in the works. Hi Tim. Something that bugs me with e-groups in general is the number of people who have a relatively simple question/problem and give no indication that they have tried to solve it for themselves. The questions that are basically ohms law, you know the things, "I need to charge this battery, what size resistor do I need and which side of the battery do I put it?" Now be reasonable, that was in your Tech exam syllabus. Tell me what you've tried to solve the problem and I'm more likely to help. Don't expect me to be your Google operator! As for the piggies, well.... piggies are generally simple minded beasts. On-off keying and anything that cycles faster than every 3nS or so is beyond most of them. Radio transceivers operating in the 136 MHz - 174 MHz and the 400 MHz - 470 MHz bands are subject to the equipment certification process and must be certified and properly labeled prior to being marketed or sold in the United States. 47 U.S.C. § 503(b) of the Act provides that any person who willfully or repeatedly fails to comply substantially with the terms and conditions of any license, or willfully or repeatedly fails to comply with any of the provisions of the Act or of any rule, regulation or order issued by the Commission thereunder, shall be liable for a forfeiture penalty. The term "willful" as used in Section 503(b) has been interpreted to mean simply that the acts or omissions are committed knowingly. ND9M Sat Trip to Delaware

I'll be making another "grid-pedition", leaving tomorrow, 11 June; this run will initially be to Delaware where I'll be QRV in both FM28 and FM29, perhaps on the grid line, on all FM sats on Sunday, the 14th. If Murphy takes the day off, I'll also hit the FO29, VO52, and AO7 birds as well. There are at least two ops that I know of that need Delaware to wrap up their WAS, so hopefully the satellite gods will be on our side. On Monday, the 15th, I'll start heading south again and will put out all FM0x and FM1x grids that have land in them and some, maybe all, of the FM2x grids, then into southeastern GA and on south to Fort Lauderdale in EM96. A couple of the less accessible grids appear to be FM02 and FM13. (An aqua-duck would be a great asset!) The trip up will be via interstate with no particular grids in mind, but I'll stop and operate from whatever grid I'm in during each pass as I head northeast. I don't know what, if any, grid boundaries I'll hit this time, but as before everything will be fully photo documented for anyone who may need it. CU on the birds. 73, Jim, ND9M

I disagree. Since amateur radio operators can build their gear, ANY radio can be used so long as it's spectral purity and power output are within the established limits. IC-910 Data Connections

I would invite comments on a recent change to cabling my IC-910H with my AEA DSP-2232 TNC. Until now, I have cabled the 910 main & sub data port sockets to the 2232 five pin din radio input port. The cable was made up using the 910 data socket 9600 bps convention. I did this in order to communicate with satellite BB services such as GO-32. Unfortunately, this convention does not support 1200 bps. I would need to swap cables in order to switch RX audio from data port pin 4 to pin 5 for 1200bps AFSK. To get around this shortcoming, I am replacing the data socket cables with a cable using ACC port to connect with 2232. Icom manual says this should work for 9600bps FM mode or 1200bps FM/SSB modes. Does anyone know whether using ACC port vs Main & Sub data sockets compromises anything? Jim K7EG

VU2MKP Silent Key

I have just got the very sad news from VU2RCR Chandru, that our friend Robert Kohli VU2MKP became a silent key in Bangalore just a few minutes ago in a hospital where he had been admitted a few days ago. For those of us fortunate people who knew Robert, he was a truly remarkable individual who in spite of his disabilities managed to do many things we would be happy to just attempt. He was an example of what can be done in spite of such severe handicaps. Being paralyzed from the neck down, he could only use his head and mouth to control his motorized wheel chair and it was a common sight for him to drive around the streets of Bangalore, visiting friends, going to restaurants and even shopping for radio components for his radio projects. He was an avid radio amateur, controlling the radio and associated equipment, all with plastic rods held in his mouth. He operated the computer also in this fashion and even made computer drawings on antenna designs etc which he shared with friends- my satellite antennae were home brewed from drawings he sent me. He was a keen DXer and had friends all over the world, on HF and satellites also. When AO 40 was operational he made several hundreds of contacts. Robert was Life member of ARSI and took an active part in all activities. He attended several ham fests and knew many, many hams all over VU and the rest of the world. He had recently constructed a home for himself in Bangalore in which the shack was on the first floor and had made a ramp from the ground floor to use his wheel chair to go to the first floor, so keen was he on amateur radio. Ham radio has lost a great operator who guided many hams and was a source of inspiration to many of us. - we will miss you Robert. Another satellite-receiver option

I use a Hamtronics R139 Weather fax Receiver with a QFH antenna that I built for receving and decoding images from the weather birds such as NOAA 18. I never had any luck with any of my other receivers such as my Icom R20, being to narrow for this purpose, although I know of guy's who have modified receivers successfully for just this purpose. I would try taking the antenna off of the tripod for a little while. The polarization of the satellites changes constantly, and with the antenna on the tripod, it's difficult to compensate for those changes. Also, AO-51 is a much stronger bird than SO-50, but AO-27 is the strongest at the moment. AO-27 has the same frequencies as SO-50, but there is no tone, and it's got a timer on it that turns it on when it reaches (about) the Gulf Coast line (for the purposes of maintaining battery power). You'll have time to get your antenna in the right place with the 20 seconds of telemetry it starts with (see http://www.ao27.org/AO27/index.shtml for a schedule). For your situation, I would recommend trying AO-27 until you are familiar with the satellites. AO-27 isn't as crowded as AO-51, but it's also not as quiet (both in traffic and output) as SO-50. Don't quote me on it, but I think AO-51 has less than 500mW output right now, AO-27 is 500mW and SO-50 is 250mW. Good luck! I have for sale a complete, full-duplex-capable handheld FM satellite station, including: - Icom IC-W32A HT, with manual and OEM duck antenna - Icom BP-170 battery case, holds 4 AA alkalines - Batteries America BP-173X, 9.6V 1450 mAh pack - Batteries America BP 171XH, 4.8V 2700 mAh pack - MFJ Speaker mic for the W32A. - Maldol stubby (2.5-inch) duck antenna with BNC connector - MFJ-1717 duck antenna with BNC connector - Pryme AL-800 telescoping whip antenna with BNC connector - Batteries America Cigarette plug for W32A I am not the first owner of the radio. I bought it from a commercial vendor last August at the Huntsville hamfest. That vendor provided a 30-day, no-questions-asked guarantee. The radio did and does work as new, with one exception. When I operate it full duplex and use a Y adapter plug at the earphone jack so I can hear myself and record the pass, I sometimes get audio break up that suggests a loose connection or aged plug. This doesn’t occur if I use the speaker mic, which has a headphone jack on the bottom that I can plug the Y adapter into. Otherwise, the radio performs as new. Cosmetically, it looks as close to NIB as I’ve ever seen in a used radio. I cannot see even minor surface scratches in the display face, and there are no scuffs or marks of any kind on the radio body or the battery packs. I’ll provide digital photos upon request. I picked up the battery packs, cigarette plug and speaker mic at Huntsville last August, too. The original Icom NiCad battery pack wasn’t in great shape, so I retired/recycled it. I bought the AL-800 antenna before I picked up the Icom, and have used it for multiple handheld satellite contacts. Allen, N5AFV, literally has made thousands of handheld satellite contacts using this antenna. The MFJ duck is capable of making satellite contacts, but it’s not as good as the AL-800. I have more than $450 – not retail, but what I actually paid – invested in this gear. Full retail price on the packs and other accessories would bring it close to $500. I am asking $300 (certified check or money order) for the entire package ($310 if you want to use PayPal because of its fees), with an additional $10 to cover USPS Priority Mail shipping and insurance. I am not interested in breaking the package up. Why am I selling? After last weekend’s testing, I want to get a Kenwood TH-F6A because of its versatility. With my other HT and my Diamond duplexer, I’ll still be able to operate the FM satellites full duplex. I am still unemployed (since late December), so something has to go if I want to pick up another radio. That’s also the reason for the extra $10 for PayPal. DJ-G7T - new manual and firmware

Hi! Alinco appears to be addressing some of the concerns those of us who bought the new DJ-G7T HT had. Last week, a new manual was made available through the Alinco web site: http://www.alinco.com/Products/DJ-G7/djg7insweb.zip There is a mention on the Alinco site on how owners who bought the DJ-G7T with the original version of the instruction manual can get a printed version of the new manual for free. It is near the middle of the page: http://www.alinco.com/Products/DJ-G7/ Before Dayton, Alinco had released new firmware for the Japanese version of this HT, addressing issues with Chinese fonts on the LCD display. That was a good sign for the T version, that Alinco was allowing the firmware to be updated. Now there is a new firmware update available for the DJ-G7T at: http://www.alinco.com/Products/DJ-G7/firmdown.html One of the items that the new version of the firmware is supposed to address is "Operation of Cross-band repeat function reviewed". Maybe whatever was done will help those of us who are not as interested in using this HT as a cross-band repeater, but want to use it for cross-band full-duplex operation with the FM satellites. I plan on downloading the new firmware and putting it on my DJ-G7Ts tonight. This weekend, I will once again try the DJ-G7T on FM satellites to see if the performance has improved with the new firmware. The QFH antenna that I use is the answer for good copy of the weather birds, along with a preamp. I get a full quieting signal from within a few degrees of AOS of weather sat NOAA 18. It is sad and shocking to know that Robert is no more. I remember meeting him many times and will continue to remember him as a humble and fine human being. He was a life member of AMSAT INDIA and has advised and shared his inputs during the design of VO-52. He was also one of the early VU station on the AO-40 and other satellites. CW is still alive and well

I thought I'd check for activity on a late evening FO-29 pass tonight as I hadn't listened for quite sometime. I heard two 9 land stations who had the pass entirely to themselves. They were obviously good friends as one of them indicated his spam filter had probably eaten the other station's email who had sent pictures. They agreed to go to the Land Line after the pass indicating they probably lived fairly close to each other. I did wonder though where everyone else was on tonight's pass. I probably should have tuned around more and may have missed some other QSO's. Anyway, it was great hearing CW being utilized. The doppler however kept me quite busy at that frequency as I'm not using software. Just two ears and a pencil. I've got to cobble something together and get on the air soon. I have just got the very sad news from VU2RCR Chandru, that our friend Robert Kohli VU2MKP became a silent key in Bangalore just a few minutes ago in a hospital where he had been admitted a few days ago. For those of us fortunate people who knew Robert, he was a truly remarkable individual who in spite of his disabilities managed to do many things we would be happy to just attempt. He was an example of what can be done in spite of such severe handicaps. Being paralyzed from the neck down, he could only use his head and mouth to control his motorized wheel chair and it was a common sight for him to drive around the streets of Bangalore, visiting friends, going to restaurants and even shopping for radio components for his radio projects. He was an avid radio amateur, controlling the radio and associated equipment, all with plastic rods held in his mouth. He operated the computer also in this fashion and even made computer drawings on antenna designs etc which he shared with friends- my satellite antennae were home brewed from drawings he sent me. He was a keen DXer and had friends all over the world, on HF and satellites also. When AO 40 was operational he made several hundreds of contacts. Robert was Life member of ARSI and took an active part in all activities. He attended several ham fests and knew many, many hams all over VU and the rest of the world. He had recently constructed a home for himself in Bangalore in which the shack was on the first floor and had made a ramp from the ground floor to use his wheel chair to go to the first floor, so keen was he on amateur radio. Another satellite-receiver option

Hi Guy's It's been more than several years since I last posted to the bb's. I recently have become active on the sats again and must say that I am enjoying myself. I wanted to comment as to another radio that I have used in combination with my 817 for working the ssb birds. I use a Icon R20 for the downlink radio which is a terrific performer. The other thing you will notice in these photos, is that I am using vox on the 817, which allows me a free hand for adjusting doppler on the 817. I am very pleased with this combination, although the R20 is a all band receiver only. IC-910H low audio problem.

According to the IC-910H manual, pin number 8 at the mic connector is audio output (which varies according to af control). I connected a pair of headphones at the pin but the audio is way to low and cannot be used for listening. Is it normal? I thought that it was designed for this purpose. Another satellite-receiver option

Hey everyone, Over the weekend, I had a chance to do some more testing and experimenting – this time, with a Kenwood TH-F6A HT. My sincere thanks to Ed, N4ALE, who loaned me his TH-F6A for the weekend. I picked it up Friday afternoon and returned it Sunday afternoon, giving it a pretty good workout in the interim – well, part of it. I can’t tell you how it performs on AO-27, AO-51 and SO-50 because I never tried it with any of our FM satellites. In fact, I never keyed the radio’s transmitter. Instead, I focused on its receiver. The TH-F6A proved to be a capable receiver for use on AO-7, FO-29 and VO-52. If you have an all-mode radio that will operate in CW and SSB on the UHF and VHF bands, you can use the HT as your receiver for a full-duplex station that will work our linear-transponder satellites. For the record, I believe the current-production all-mode transceivers that are NOT full duplex include two Icom models (IC-706MKIIG and IC-7000) and three Yaesu models (FT-817ND, FT-857D and FT-897D). Anyone with one of these rigs and the Kenwood can do what I did last weekend. Just add antennas, or a duplexer and a dual-band antenna. There are plenty of workable options, including a good number of homebrew antenna designs to consider. I started out Friday evening just listening because I discovered I needed an adapter to connect my headphones to the receiver jack on the radio, which takes a 2.5 mm connector. Full-duplex contacts in SSB wouldn’t happen until I had that, so I connected my Elk and configured the radio’s B-Band to receive SSB in the 2 meter and 70 cm pass bands. It’s easy to set up, and the fine-tuning feature permits tuning steps in CW or SSB as low as 33 Hz. I chose 100 Hz, which worked well. Switching from CW to SSB took only a few seconds. Through the evening, I copied AO-7 on multiple passes to the east and west of my location, and had reception below 4 degrees at the end of the passes, which was encouraging. Just before 03:00 UTC Friday evening, I had a VO-52 pass that reached a maximum elevation of about 70 degrees here. I copied practically the whole pass, hearing K8YSE work AA5PK and KB1PVH, and also clearly copying CW from W8IJ. Here’s the fun part about that pass – I was standing in my driveway, using a Diamond SRH-789 telescoping whip for an antenna. Having the ability to copy pretty much the whole pass with just a whip helped me to see that the TH-F6A probably would do OK as a satellite receiver. After picking up the headphone adapter I needed Saturday morning, I started working passes. Using an SMA-to-SO239 adapter, I connected the HT to the Elk using a Diamond duplexer. I used either a Yaesu FT-857D or a Yaesu FT-817ND as my transmit radio. The earliest afternoon pass of AO-7 hit 3.8 degrees maximum elevation here, but I heard my CW signal and called CQ a few times with no answer. The next pass of AO-7 was well over 30 degrees here, also to my east. I worked N3TE in CW, then switched to SSB and moved up the pass band for a voice contact with K3SZH. By then, AO-7 was descending to my north, so I switched back to CW and started calling CQ – primarily to see how long I could hear myself through the HT on the downlink. I was thrilled when K4YYL called me. When we finished that contact, AO-7 was at 2.6 degrees elevation according to the computer. I should mention here that I was manually tuning for Doppler throughout the weekend, which also gave me a chance to use various software packages as my “guides” for finding myself at the start of a pass. Ham Radio Deluxe’s Satellite Tracker, Orbitron and SatPC 32 all proved very helpful. After launching one of the programs and getting the Doppler tuning on screen, I just followed their lead and found myself quickly, then stayed where I needed to be – evening tuning up and down the pass band to call others I heard. On the next pass of AO-7 (the last of Saturday evening for me), I worked K4YYL again – this time in SSB, and this time using an FT-817ND at 5 watts out for my transmitter. Think about that – a fully functional all-mode satellite station that I could fit in a day pack with room to spare! FO-29 later Saturday evening was frustrating only inasmuch as there weren’t many folks around. The first pass here hit less than 20 degrees maximum elevation to my east, and I called CQ in CW without a contact. The next pass was about 70 degrees maximum elevation, and I talked to myself for the first 2/3 of the pass before switching over to VO-52, which was also in range at about the same time. K9QHO and I had a nice contact in SSB. Sunday morning, I only wanted to get some contacts on FO-29 because I promised to return the radio that afternoon. I worked Dave, W8IJ, and Leo, W7JPI, in SSB. Seven contacts in all, covering all three CW/SSB satellites and both modes, and all of them using the Kenwood HT as my receive radio. I could have made additional contacts if the satellites – especially FO-29 – had been busier on the passes I worked. A lot of AMSAT members do demos for radio clubs and other groups from time to time, and I decided to post this report on the TH-F6A with that in mind. I know that many who do demos often schedule them to coincide with passes of the FM LEO satellites – and there’s nothing wrong with that. But AO-7 and AO-51 often make evening passes, for example, that are within 30-40 minutes of each other. It occurs to me that letting folks hear satellite contacts in CW and SSB over a satellite that has completed more than 156.000 orbits might be pretty cool – especially when you can note that anybody in the group who has an HT like this one and an all-mode VHF-UHF radio can work AO-7 with the right antenna(s) and a little practice. I looked around on the Web after returning the HT to Ed, N4ALE, and learned that Alinco, AOR, Icom and Yaesu all offer HT-style receive-only radios that are all mode, like the TH-F6A. I suspect any of them could serve as an all-mode satellite receiver, too, although I haven’t tested any of them. I hope to have that chance moving forward. I like the TH-F6A because it also can double as a full handheld station for the FM satellites, albeit in half-duplex. I know that’s not the recommended way to go, but I and many others are, collectively, proof that it can be done effectively and without totally wrecking a pass. I hope all the manufacturers soon will have at least one full-duplex-capable HT in their lines – and that those radios will have all-mode receive on at least one band, like this Kenwood. In the meantime, I encourage those of you with this little radio to experiment with it as a receiver for AO-7, FO-29 and VO-52. Where can I find a current listing of satellite modes by band? I searched the AMSAT.ORG web site but could not find a list. I found an old FAQ from 1994 but it only has a half-dozen modes listed. I want something like this: Mode A - 2m up / 10m down Mode B - 70cm up / 2m down Mode J - 2m up / 70 cm down I'm trying to help debug some logging software with ARRL LoTW and want to make sure we have it all right. Dual Band (144/430) antenna.

Hello. Am looking for information about vertical dual band (144/430 mhz) antenna to work some LEO satellites. Something like a 6/8 (144) and 3x5/8 (430) like X-50 from Diamond or 1/4 (144) and 2x5/8 (430) like X-30 also from Diamond. Or somthing like that. Thanks in advance. Proposed AMSAT-NA Symposium Paper

Hi Dan, I will be submitting a paper entitled: "A Linear U/v Transponder for SuitSat2" Abstract: SuitSat2 will incorporate several advanced circuit functions which will be directly applicable to the "modular" development program under way at AMSAT-NA. One of the SuitSat2 modules, the linear U/v RF transponder, uses the latest in solid state device technology to provide a very efficient 1/2 watt 145 MHz transmitter and a low noise 435 MHz to 10.7 MHz down converter. I wonder if some AMSAT VIP's in the DC area should go to this: *Coffee Briefing on Space Debris and Collisions* *Wednesday, June 10, 2009* *9:00am - 10:00am* *2253 Rayburn* *Keeping Our Space Assets Safe From *an Increasingly Crowded Space Environment, If I was in DC, I would go to represent Student Satellites, but I am in Alabama on travel. Our position should fully support the mitigation of space debris, but we must make sure that the regulations are not overly burdensome to the small guys. I reviewed a first draft that was ONLY written for the 100 Million dollar Launch Provider. It placed an extrordinary burden of "tests" and "reports" and bureaucratic processes that of course would be routine for the Space COmpany with an army of lawyers in their employ, but there was no provision for the small 1kg student payload for a simpler process. This meeting is not the place to speak up, but it is the place to learn and to circulate and network and get a copy of what is being considered. Im far from my desk and so have none of my AMSAT contact info, to try to get this to the AMSAT folks that might be able to get to the meeting. Maybe one of them will see it here and can see about an amsat presence? Bob, WB4APR

2009 AMSAT Annhual Meeting and Space Symposium - Call for papers

This is the first call for papers for the 2009 AMSAT Annual Meeting and Space Symposium to be held October 9 - 11 at the Four Points Sheraton Hotel at the Baltimore Washington Airport. Proposals for papers, symposium presentations and poster presentations are invited on any topic of interest to the amateur satellite community. We request a tentative title of your presentation as soon as possible, with final copy submitted by September 1, 2009 for inclusion in the printed proceedings. Abstracts and papers should be sent to Dan Schultz, N8FGV, at n8fgv(a)amsat.org.
