A slightly bigger cube with a booster motor is something feasible? a reborn AO-7? in the long desert walk running for the HEO mirage even the smallest drop of hope worth as much than a drop of gas. Delfi-C3 - accounts for uploading telemetry

Hi all, the RASCAL telemetry decoding software for Delfi-C3 includes the possibility to upload telemetry to our servers. Although this can be done using the default "guest" account, we would like to encourage everyone to obtain an account by sending an e-mail with your name, callsign and gridsquare locator to rascal(a)delfic3.nl , so that we can actually see from which parts of the world we get telemetry. Furthermore, we will hold a small competition where the radio amateur who has submitted most packets after the three months science mission receives a prize. A reminder re: phonetic alphabet and digits...

Hi! I just heard from Beny XE2YBG, who made a quick trip north of his city in Tamaulipas state in northeastern Mexico to be in a different grid (EL04) last night for an AO-51 pass. Beny told me he worked 9 different stations, mostly XE stations, during a pass at 0136 UTC (about 87 degrees maximum elevation for his location). He was hoping to work more stations in the US, but many of the stations calling him were not using the international phonetic alphabet and were not using individual digits for their grids. He does not understand much English, but can deal with the standard (international) phonetic alphabet and the individual digits OK. For example, if I called Beny in English and wanted to give him my information, I would use the following (if operating in grid DM33)... "Whiskey-Delta-Nine-Echo-Whiskey-Kilo, Delta-Mike-Three-Three" Say each letter phonetically, and each digit in the grid locator - not "Delta-Mike-Thirty-Three". Many of the Mexican satellite operators understand "QSO English", and not much more. They would enjoy making more contacts with stations throughout the USA and Canada, but their limited grasp of the English language means we (at least those of us outside Mexico who do not speak Spanish) need to remember that when calling those stations. Please be aware of this, and you may end up working some new and unusual grids via satellite from those XE stations (some of whom are starting to look at their maps, and make trips to other grids). There are some of the XE satellite operators who are fluent in English. Even with them, following these suggestions (phonetic alphabet, individual digits in grid locators) would be a good thing, and a good habit to get into - for the times you work an XE station with limited fluency in English. EW/G0SFJ successfully contacted G7HIA on 20th April via AO-51, but under difficult conditions. With licence number 000065, and thanks to two local hams, and to the great interest of the local Militsia, on the evening of 19 April I made contact simplex on 145.500 with other local hams in Minsk from outside my hotel. The next day Sunday 20th, we were QRV on the early pass of AO-51 at about 0650 UTC but FM'd out by QRO hams in Moscow and Ukraine (in Russian) and in YO8 (calling in English). We used a separate 5w TX and RX but did not hear ourselves coming back. By 0920 utc we were in Krutki north-east of Minsk, to see the monument to Belarussian cosmonaut Vladimir Kovalenok. Using a THD-7E powered from the car battery I think I switched on SO-50, then heard 5/9 a (G6 or G7)and Ib, OZ1MY, but could not establish contact because I was still on duplex and feedback howl through the satellite blanked me out! But at 1630 approx utc, after a DL and OE had a long conversation in German, and a UA9 in Siberia passed by, I did manage to contact John G7HIA, 5W with my trusty Arrow antenna, from Minsk, KO33su - so he gets the card!! Any SWL cards or reports gratefully received by email or QTHR, and will be acknowledged!! Hi Nathaniel, Been watching this thread. The only bits of info I haven't seen go across yet -- Antennas act very differently when the radiator part of the antenna is in close proximity to the RF ground. If you have modelled the antenna as being "in empty space", that will account for much of the loss seen when it is mounted to the sat, which in your design by definition is very close to the sat frame, and thus both the electrical and RF grounds. Have your modeller check to see if they have the sat frame, and any conductive panels, in their model; if not you'll have some (possibly large) matching adjustments to do. A 1/4 wave piece of steel measuring tape needs to be at 90 degrees from all nearby metal to be an actual "monopole" antenna. If you lay it along the side of the sat, the nearby metal (grounds) will soak up much of the signal. If I remember right, Prof Campbell's prior-to-CubeSat project (name is escaping me at the moment) incorporated a proven loop design. I don't remember the freq though. You might want to check your spec against that one. If you haven't already, check the entire assembly (antenna on sat) with an SWR analyzer, or preferably a network analyzer, to make sure the transmitter is "seeing" a 50 ohm RF load at the input of the antenna line at your transmit freq. While this doesn't guarantee the antenna is actually an antenna and not a resistor, it does give a basic check that the matching network is close for your situation. GL, Mike N2VR

The Beacon frequencies are - VHF 145.826 MHz. AFSK FM ASCII Telemetry UHF 435.025 MHz. OFF S-band 2401.5 MHz. OFF The satellite is now subject to eclipses during every orbit. Long term predictions indicate that eclipses will occur until 2019, when there will be some eclipse free periods until 2023. However these very long term predictions should be regarded with caution, as large tracking errors can accumulate over long periods of time. When telemetry was last received it showed that one of the solar arrays had failed, and there was a large unexplained current drain on the main 14 volt bus. After 24 years in orbit the battery has undergone over 100,000 partial charge/discharge cycles, and observations suggest that it cannot power the satellite during eclipses lasting more than about ten minutes, or sometimes even during periods of poor solar attitude. The current status of the satellite, is that all the analogue telemetry channels, 0 to 59 are zero, ie they have failed. The status channels 60 to 67 are still working. The real time clock is showing a large accumulated error, although over short periods timekeeping is accurate to a few seconds per month. When last heard the clock was 83.0958 days slow. The day of the month has a bit stuck at 'one' so the day of the month may show an error of +40 days for some dates. The time display has switched into 12 hour mode. Unfortunately, there is no AM/PM indicator, since the time display format was designed for 24 hour mode. The spacecraft computer and active attitude control system have switched OFF, ie. the satellite' attitude is controlled only by the passive gravity boom gradient, and the satellite is free to spin at any speed. The watchdog timer now operates on a 20 day cycle. The ON/OFF times have tended to be very consistent. The average of many observations show this to be 20.7 days, ie. 10.3 days ON followed by 10.4 days OFF. However, poor solar attitude may result may result in a low 14 volt line supply, which may cause the beacon to switch OFF prematurely, and reset the watchdog timer cycle. When this occurs, the beacon is OFF for 20.7 days. OSCAR-11 was the second satellite from the University of Surrey, www.ee.surrey.ac.uk/SSC. It was designed, built and launched, within a time scale of six months, by a team headed by Martin Sweeting G3YJO. Amateur radio groups working at various locations in the world, also contributed to the project. It used commercially available 'off the shelf' components (COTS). Following the success of these satellites, in 1985 Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd. www.sstl.co.uk was formed, as a commercial venture. This grew into a major company which has produced over 27 small satellite projects for a global market. The University of Surrey has recently agreed to sell it's major shareholding to EADS-Astrium. This agreement is now awaiting regulatory approval. The joint company will have the experience of manufacturing large and small satellites, for geo-synchronous and low earth orbits. In regognition of his work, Martin G3YJO, was appointed Professor at the University of Surrey. He received an OBE in the 1995 Queens birthday honours list, and in 2002 a knighthood in the New Year's honours list. I'm sorry we didn't get in touch, but my cell phone died while we were out there. Were were listening on 146.610, but didn't hear anything except the time. Maybe we weren't using it correctly? I think 45dB will take you just to about 600km, but really there's room for improvement yet. The photo's show the antenna very well. A couple of thoughts. It looks like it is mounted on FR4 PCB and this is an inch or so from the main structure. Is there another antenna on the other side? - The RF will not pass through the satellite. The FR4 will affect the properties especially if you have applied glue at a voltage node on the antenna. Also, I see one side is very closely coupled into a track running from the solar cells. That will not help. My guess is that the antenna will be really bad on the VNA. - Remember when testing that the VNA will show you return loss. You will know if the return loss is between 0dB and 6dB that the antenna does not work. But please be aware that even if you see a 'good' return loss e.g. 15 to 30dB, Then that may not indicate that the energy from your transmitter is being radiated. - After all, a 50 Ohm resistor has a wonderful return loss, but does not radiate. Look for a nice dip at your design frequency. If you have to replace the antenna then a whip / steel tape would be OK but needs to work against part of the structure. - Which looking at your satellite will be difficult to do. A good solution may be to make a dipole from two solid metal rods and fit them to the same spot where your antenna is at present. - But clear of other objects. Say 1 inch above the surface. Another choice would be a folded dipole, but you will need to match that from apx 200 to 300 ohms, back down to 50 ohms. If you decide on the simple (but reliable) dipole, mount the elements off the PCB material and only support them at the center not at the ends. The ends are a high voltage point and anything near them or touching will affect the performance. I think your original estimate of 57dB is spot on. Well done. Path loss for 3.18km = -95.26dB Path loss for 2000km = -151.23 Difference from ridge to space = 56dB So you have to find another 12dB + some margin for loss due to spin or pointing angle. 1) It could be that the rubber duck is only 50% efficient. - So that could be 3dB off the total. But your new antenna may no be much better. 2) You have not mentioned ground station feeder loss. Without the preamp that will be added to the total. On 70cms you could be looking at 4 - 6dB. So, possibly only 6 or 7dB to find !!! Your TS2000 has an S meter. On SSB or CW the sensitivity is as follows. This is very approximate, but it may help. This is with RF gain at max and no pre-amp. S1 = - 113dBm at antenna. S3 - 110dBm S5 - 107 S7 - 102 S9 - 93dBm >From what you have said so far 0.5W of carrier from the ridge should give a little over S9 when in SSB or CW. If you can check this with a lab sig generator and your TS2000 you will be able to do some really good measurements on your system. I have one final thought on the missing dBs. Or the lack of 9600. You mention that you have not been able to use 9600 and you are still not 100% reliable on 1200. It could be that you need to optimize the modulation level on the transmitter. That is very important because if the modulation is too high. - i.e. if the volume going into the radio is too high, then the bandwidth on FM will be much greater then necessary. The reason this is important, is that if the transmitted bandwidth of the signal exceeds the width of the filters in the receiver, then the demodulated audio will be distorted and you will never recover the data. (I think something like this happened to CAPE 1) So, spend a little time optimizing the transmitter either by experimentation, or by calculating the bandwidth and then attaching the transmitter to a spectrum analyzer to make the adjustment. - There probably isn't time, but the proper way would be to generate a test signal at 9600 and then examine the recovered audio for distortion / linearity. Hi to the BB, I was able to locally test the Delfi-C3 RASCAL software using the 5MB telemetry sound file from the Delfi-C3 website using my computer with the following method. Set your computer Sound Recording Device Properties using the following path. I am using Windows XP Home Edition. Control Panel ---- Sounds and Audio Devices ---- Sounds and Audio Devices Properties ---- Click on Audio tab ---- Click on Sound Recording Volume tab ---- Select Mono Mix on Sound Recorder Properties ---- Set the recording volume level to half way on the scale. Now make sure you have a check mark in the Sound Recorder select box. Download the 5MB WAV file onto your desktop from the following link in the Delfi-C3 website: http://www.delfic3.nl/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=23&Itemid=1… Open the computer Sound Recorder program ( All Programs ---- Accessories ---- Entertainment ---- Sound Recorder ) or use the Windows Media Player. Ridge Test Results

Hi again, everyone. It's a little overwhelming to get so much help at once, but thank you, everyone, for all of it. One clarification: I did indeed mean pF, not uF for the capacitors in the matching circuit. Also, we performed another ridge test this evening (another typo there: the ridge is 3.18km from the roof where we have the ground station setup), using the complete ground station (minus pre-amp), and TH-D7 with rubber duck. We transmitted from the ground station, while varying the amount of attenuators between the TS-2000 and coax to the antenna. The "PWR" column is in the format (TH-D7)/(TS-2000). With each test, two 319-byte packets were sent by the ground station in rapid succession. The results are below. If any of this is not clear, I will do my best to clarify things. Also, the entire test was performed at 437.405MHz, at 1200 baud, even though we would like to operate at 9600. I have gotten 9600 baud to work when two TH-D7's are across the room from each other, but since 9600 baud didn't work during the initial configuration, we decided to just characterize the rubber duck at 1200. I am updating some radios I have,,, I am going to sell my Alinco dual bander? a DJ-V5, which I had used on sats,and as a scanner, and the W32A I had bought just for satellite work. I am going to update to a Kenwood TH-F6A,,, because I can work sats with it, but I also like having the? SW and AM band coverage. I saw, but didn't pay much attention to the recent HT discussion... is the TH-F6A my best choce for HT? for sats, ... or at least in the top two?? Hi! I haven't done a road trip like I did on Saturday in a long time. I woke up early, left Phoenix before sunrise (5am local/1200 UTC), was part of an event with a radio club 90 minutes north of the city, and then proceed to put a bunch of miles (456.5 miles/734km) on my truck. In all of this, I was able to park in 4 different locations, putting a total of 4 different grids on the air during 4 AO-51 and 2 AO-27 passes and making a total of 65 QSOs with stations in the continental USA, Canada, Mexico, and Alaska. Through my fuel purchases, I also made a small boost in the economies of some oil-producing countries. The primary reason for the trip on Saturday was to help the Yavapai Amateur Radio Club with their activity at an event in Prescott AZ, about 100 miles/160km north of Phoenix. I added to that a loop through northern Arizona that would allow me to operate from 4 different grids, and in particular put a couple of unusual (for satellite ops) grids on the air: DM35 and DM45. These two grids in northern Arizona are rarely on the satellites, unless someone driving on I-40 decides to stop and work passes from up there. I can probably count on one hand the number of passes I've heard stations from both of these grids in the last 2+ years. First stop... 1410 UTC, about 85 miles/137km north of Phoenix, west of the I-17 freeway in grids DM34xm and DM44am at 4455 feet (1358m) elevation: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&time=&date=&ttype=&q=34+31.1… This was a pass to my east, and the only time I would be on the air from DM44 during the day. Lots of activity, and I was able to log contacts with 12 stations in Canada, Mexico, and the US. I have operated from this spot off and on in the past year, and this time I had an "audience" - some cattle, roaming through this field just inside the Prescott National Forest. In this area, the national forest has very few trees. It is more high desert than forested area. After this pass, I made the 30-mile/50km drive west to Prescott. The event I was helping with would be in the public library in downtown Prescott, grid DM34sm: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=34.5397+n+112.4672+w&jsv=1… The event was only for 2 hours, between 10am and 12 noon (1700- 1900 UTC), and its location on a hill prevented me from working any eastern passes unless the satellites were above 40 or 45 degrees elevation. I was able to do a demonstration on one AO-51 pass to the west at 1548 UTC, logging contacts with 9 stations from Alaska to Mexico. The event, primarily focused on astronomy, was a good one. The Yavapai Amateur Radio Club had a table with general information on amateur radio including details of a local school's SAREX contact in 1994 and another table with information on radio astronomy, along with my table with satellite-related information. Thanks to Ray W1OTH, Terry KB7TRE, Bob WB6ODR, and the others with the radio club and the Prescott Astronomy Club for your assistance. After the event wrapped up, I grabbed some lunch and drove 35 miles/56km north to a spot east of Arizona route 89 in grids DM34tx and DM35ta near Drake AZ (25 miles/40km south of Ash Fork and the I-40 freeway): http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=35+0.00+n+112+23.132+w&jsv… This was a very nice spot, again just inside the Prescott National Forest in the high desert (4735 feet/1443m elevation, per my GPS receiver). I had a great view of the sky in all directions, no hassles from people driving on the road, and was able to work a pair of AO-27 passes. I made 10 QSOs on the 2121 UTC pass to the east, and 8 more on the 2302 UTC pass to the west. After those passes, it was time to pack up my stuff and move on to the last spot I wanted to reach. After a 45-mile/72km drive I reached a spot on old US 66 west of Parks AZ in grids DM35xg and DM45ag: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=35+15.570+n+112+0.00+w&jsv… No more high desert here. I was in the Kaibab National Forest, and this actually looked like a forest with lots of tall trees. I had gone up in elevation, up to 7128 feet/2173m. I had almost 90 minutes before the first AO-51 pass of the evening, so I tried to find a good spot that would still put me on the DM35/DM45 line away from the road. No luck with that, so I parked on the side of the road and prepared for the first pass. When I started to hear the satellite come up from the southeast, it was already jammed with stations from all over the USA and Mexico. Despite the crowd, I was able to make quick contacts with 15 different stations during the 0120 UTC pass. Between that pass and the 0259 UTC pass to the west, I drove around the area again to see the sights while there was still sunlight. I returned to the same spot for the 0259 UTC pass, and made 11 more contacts with stations from Mexico up to Alaska to wrap up my satellite operating for the day. After I dismantled my station, I drove to Flagstaff for dinner. Then a quick look around that city, before driving down the I-17 freeway to go home. If anyone who worked me Saturday wants a QSL card for the contact(s), please e-mail me. If I already have a QSL card from an earlier satellite QSO with you, there's no need to send me another card. If we have not worked before, I would appreciate receiving your QSL card. If you didn't work me and would like to hear DM35, DM45, or some other unusual grids in Arizona on future satellite passes, there will be other opportunities as summer approaches. 73! Hi Alan, make sure to first extract the entire RASCAL zip file (including the lib folder) before running the jar file, RASCAL gives this error because it cannot reach the lib, most probably because it has not been extracted from the zip file. Let me know whether that works! Without reviewing your EZ-NEC calculations, have you taken into account that the epoxied antenna will be extremely close to the metalic frame and the solar cells? If your antenna is only on one axis will you be shielded in all other directions so that any spin will shadow the earth? Directionality of the antenna comes to mind, interaction with the cube's surface is a consideration. I agree that it is a consideration, but I'm not sure what tools or equations to use to consider them. What about a poor matching circuit? One idea on this side is to try swapping in and out various capacitors to iterate towards a better one. Do you think that would work? I know that the TH-D7 will dial back its power if it sees a high SWR... Many of the Annapolis' satellites used metal tape measure strips rolled up for launch and released into quarterwave whips in orbit as simple antennas. Unfortunately, we don't have this option, since we are spin-stabilized, and antennas that dissipate energy would get us spinning the wrong direction. Having the test transceiver external to the cube for the ridgeline test also brings up some questions as to the duplication of your space cube's actual configuration. We didn't have any electronics in the prototype structure, but we thought having all that metal was enough. We can certainly put the boards in to see if it will have any effect, though. I would suggest setting a direct, line-of-site baseline with a traditional antenna and radio first. I agree, I'm just a little fuzzy on the specifics (see above). Any feedback on Mirage KP1-440 Preamp?

Hello all, Zapped my ARR RX only preamp for the second time out of stupidity. Time for a switched model. Cant afford the $200+ amps from SSB and such. The Mirage seems attractive. Can anyone share their experiences with this model or suggest a differnt affordable preamp? I looked at the ARR switched models already. The high powerd mast mount is too much $$ and the low power one only handles 25 watts. I could easily smoke that one out of stupidity as well (my rig can do 50 watts). Mike WB1AAT

Hi Gary, No, I didn't, but the passes before that one were great. Yesterday was for me the 1st time I had time to try AO16. Signals got really strong(er) in the last minutes of a pass. Between 2 downto 0.5 degrees elevation the link was better as between 5 downto 2 degrees. I recall that AO7 145/29mhz mode had the same effect at my station. Kinda good for long distance contacts :-) Anyway, despite that, I 'only' worked other European stations, no Canada or US (OZ1MY, RK3DXB, SP9TTX, G8ATE). MP3 recordings are on my website (http://www.qsl.net/pa3guo under LOGS). But: of course looking forward to some intercontinental QSOs ! It would, additionally, provide a 435 to 2400 MHz (Mode U/S) linear transponder using both analogue and DSP based systems. ESEO is a 110kg student satellite project intended for launch in to low inclination GTO elliptical orbit. Until the beginning of 2008 the whole ESEO project had been organized directly by ESA Education Office under the SSETI (Student Space Exploration & Technology Initiative) banner but they have now decided to adopt new arrangements. To quote from the ESA website " To date, both projects (ESEO and ESMO) have proceeded in the early phases with a project team consisting entirely of students with project management and ad hoc technical support provided by ESA. It is now intended to implement a new project team structure for these two projects in order to enhance the educational benefits given to the students and to ensure that the project progresses through major reviews to a successful completion on schedule. The new project structure consists of: * a System Prime responsible for the system engineering and technical management of the project, the provision of specialist technical advice to the students where needed, and supervising the student AIV(Assembly Integration & Verification) of the satellite at ESTEC. * a Network of Universities responsible for the delivery of payload items, satellite subsystem items and ground segment systems by their student teams and ensuring the adequate supervision/long-term continuity of the student teams locally." Wow, what a neat way to access wireless, email, web pages, and live mobile APRS. Less than 1/2 the bulk of my big laptop, and only $200 at risk instead of the $1200 labtop. I can't wait for the ham software to start working with it. Talk about portability... The ease of use, will assure that I will now probbly have the ham radio laptop apps with me more often than before since I will be more apt to carry the small XO at low risk then lug the big laptop. I'm sold! And now that my kids see how easy the itnernet access was, I now have to buy my own XO, since now their inteerest has been re kindled and they do want to take them both back to school... Yes, there are several easy ways to improve the antenna system, I just went through the same thing, and got tired of having to go out in the back yard. 1. Use the arrow antenna, but as everyone says, be careful not to go over? the ten watt? duplexer limit. 2. Obtain- buy-build a simple 2meter beam,5- 7 elements, and obtain a small 432 beam...11 elements?? Something like that.? Use those with your? U-100 elevation rotor, it will work fine, and better than the Arrow, I imagine.? Not sure what rig you want to use, but you? will have to decide? whether to use two feedlines, or one with a duplexer. Depends on the rig I guess. ?I would not go too big on the antennas, you dont want such a narrow angle? that you have to constantly tweak the beams.? I went from an elk? (similar to the Arrow) to 7 elements on 144 and 10 elements on 432,,, BIG difference in what I hear, and l how long I hear? passes. And, I mounted mine on a small tripod on the roof of my house... even that helped, not having houses or trees in the way of the low elevation passes. Circular polarization is nice, you may decide to make that upgrade as well someday, but not necessary, mount one vertically one horizontally, or maybe mount them both at 45 degree angle...I think you will be amazed at the improvement. I remember seeing one <from Italy I think that could convert to either 2m or 440 for the <converted signal but cant find the link anymore. I exchange emails with <K5GNA but he is out of stock and may not have anymore for a while. <Any help/suggestions would be appreciated.

I will go to the spot I've used previously to be in both of these grids simultaneously, near I-17 and Arizona route 169 south of Camp Verde AZ, for the AO-51 pass starting at 1410 UTC. This pass will favor eastern North America, and will be the only time I will operate from DM44 tomorrow. Then I will head to Prescott, for the demonstration on the next AO-51 pass at 1548 UTC to the west. I have been on from DM44 during many weekends in the past few months. Although this grid does not see much activity besides my trips, it has seen much more than DM35 - the main target of my travels tomorrow - and DM45. There will be other times for DM44, if anyone needs that grid via satellite. Made first QSO on AO-16 today with VA7VW, who I had worked on FM birds... I wasn't going to make a QSO,,, but... heard the satellite fine, thought, well, I will just see if I can find my signal,,, put out my call and VA7VW returned a call! Thanks VA7VW,,,? Source of Mode S downconverters ?

I am looking to get another Mode S downconverter. I remember seeing one from Italy I think that could convert to either 2m or 440 for the converted signal but cant find the link anymore. The semi operational part means it is only on when in sunlight. It doesn't take a lot of sunlight for it to function. There a great bunch of guys on there. You can actually have a conversation, and I've several three ways. The satellite automatically switches between A and B at about 0145Z. I was told how and why but I don't remember (senior moment). Give it a try, there's also the potential for a little DX (check out the footprint). Hi! On Saturday, 19 April 2008, I will be helping the Yavapai Amateur Radio Club (W7YRC) as they support the Spotlight on the Stars event by the Prescott (Arizona) Astronomy Club. This is a week-long event, and the Saturday activity will be at the Prescott Public Library in downtown Prescott (215 E. Goodwin Street, grid DM34sm). The YARC will have a table with information related to amateur radio, and I will add satellite-related information to their efforts. This event will take place between 10.00am and 12 noon (1700- 1900 UTC). The library is on a hill, and the hill along with the library building prevent any view of the eastern sky unless a satellite has an elevation of 40 to 45 degrees. This will limit my activity to one on-air demonstration, an AO-51 pass at 1548-1603 UTC to the west for anyone showing up early. I may be on the earlier AO-51 pass at 1410 UTC from somewhere in the Prescott area in grid DM34 with a better view of the eastern sky, to test my radio gear before going to the library. After this event, I plan on making a long loop through northern Arizona on my way home. I am hoping to park on the DM34/DM35 boundary for the afternoon AO-27 passes at 2121 and 2302 UTC somewhere north of Prescott. After that, I will head to a point between Williams and Flagstaff near Interstate 40 to be on the DM35/DM45 boundary for the evening AO-51 passes around 0120 and 0259 UTC. 73! Suggested mode S antennas for K5GNA downconverter

I am trying to come up with a portable sat station that can fit in a briefcase. I have the dipole and reflector antenna that K5GNA sells for his downconverter but I am looking for something compact that can fit in the briefcase and the reflector cant. I have thought about the G3RUH patch antenna but that is a little pricey for me at this point. Are there any other antennas that someone can suggest that I try for this quest ? Thanks, Ron KA4KYI

orbitron + ft-847 help

I have a couple of questions regarding how to use Orbitron with my Yaesu FT-847. I have just started experimenting with this setup and I have got it operating under PC control via the serial port, using a null-modem cable(recommended) and comm rate of 57600 baud. The first question is: when trying to listen to linear transponder equipped satellites like VO-52, I find that I am forced to tune the receiver by typing in the frequency in Orbitron, and then the radio tracks that frequency. This makes searching the transponder extremely difficult. What I am hoping to accomplish is that I can tune the receiver with the VFO, and have the computer only handle the RATE of doppler-shift, and keep the transmitter co-ordinated in order to avoid having to "find my downlink" whenever transmitting. My radio can co-ordinate TX/RX on it's own via it's "satellite" features, but it can't compensate for doppler since it doesn't know the KEPS, obviously. Every time I try to use the VFO dial on my radio, it shifts, and then the PC takes over and puts the receiver back to where orbitron tells it to be. is this issue unique to me, or am I doing something wrong? The second question is: can the PC-controlled tuning of the transciever be "smoothed-out" so that while listening to CW while doppler shift is rapid, the radio takes smaller, and more frequent steps, thus avoiding hugh shifts in received audio frequency which makes deconding impossible. It seems to be updating about once per second, and I can't find any settings in orbitron to have an update period shorter than this. Ideally, I would like the period to be about 5 to 10 times per second. Again, I think I must be doing something wrong, but I have spent some time already, and have failed to see the solution. Ron, First make sure that you have selected VO-52 and it is the currently active satellite. The satellite you have selected will be listed on the top bar of the program window and highlighted on the screen. Next click on CAT in the menu bar to open the CAT Tuning window. The window should display one line, "135900/435250 USB/LSB" Click on the C-, which changes to C+, just below your QTH location in the upper left, for CAT operation. I suspect you are already doing all of this correctly. When you put SATPC32 into CAT mode (C+) for VO-52, the following should happen: - The IC-910H should switch to Normal satellite mode. - The Upper band on the radio should switch to VHF, USB, 145,900,000 minus doppler correction (assuming rising satellite). - The Lower band on the radio should switch to UHF, LSB, 435,250,000 plus doppler correction. Check the last 3 items before proceding. I sometimes have to repeat the C+, C-, C+ steps before the radio and SATPC32 synch up. - When you key the microphone, the lower UHF band should transmit - VO-52 is U/v, UHF uplink, VHF downlink, opposite of AO-51... - While transmitting, you can adjust the uplink or the downlink in the CAT window to get the pair tuned properly. Once that is done, you can tune up and down the translator bandwidth to find other stations. I hope this helps. If not email me directly with a step by step discription of what is happening. 1) In the Radio setup, do you have the "Satellite Mode" box checked? 2) You must enter the appropriate radio address in 2 columns... also, what baudrate are you using and what have you entered for the CAT delay? (Print out the radio hints for Icom users, found under the "?" menu, and use them as a checklist.) I am trying to learn how to use SatPC32 for Doppler correction on the SSB birds. I have run into a "brick wall" in terms of how it is operating that is giving me some fits. When I put SatPC32 into CAT mode, the radio shifts into the appropriate frequencies but it wont transmit on the right band. When I press the M/S to swap the displays around so that it will transmit on the correct band, the radio stops adjusting to what is shown on the SatPC32 display. Can someone point out what I am doing wrong or do I need to change to one or more of the config files in SatPC32 ? Thanks, Ron KA4KYI

Lest we not a forget a fairly short helix 5-10 turns. Would probably be good enough for AO-51. Depending on ones construction methods, it could be fragile. I know this sounds? question idiotic, but,,, sometimes you just have to admit you can't solve a problem, and ask for help. I cannot figure out how to measure SWR with my IC-910H... does it not have an internal SWR meter? I'm using external meters. I can't believe you can't measure SWR with this rig. Help... 2x6 elements DK7ZB and polarization switch finished

Lots of pictures of the construction details are included. Also it includes a bunch of measurements (SWR, Impedance). By now this has become my main 2 meter antenna. Now I can select either horizontal, vertical, RCHP or LHCP. With the 2x6 elements in 'X' position this is a great solution. Also here detailed measurements, with help of the miniVNA of Rob. I have some travelling coming up and am trying to come up with a combination of equipment that will fit in a Pelican 1490 case that should be able to go through airport security with a minimum of hassle. swr-antenna question

Finally got my satellite antenna system set up, using with my IC-910H. Works well on 144mhz, good PO, good SWR.? But on 432,,, I have good PO but NO reading on the SWR meter. As I tune up and down the band, PO goes up and down, as I get? near or far from resonant freq.? Power Out goes up and down as I tune up and down the band, but I get NO reading on the SWR meter.? Using an older CushCraft 416TB, circular right, I think. I expected either a good SWR reading,? (hopefully) or a bad reading, but I get NO SWR reading. My only thought is how it is wired, for R circular. I am hesitant to run much power until I determine the SWR. Any ideas as to why I get NO SWR rreading on 432 antnna? Seems to hear OK, I can hear local repeaters, etc. Not sure what is going on. The meter is good, I checked that, SWR reads OK on another? radio/antenna. Bob W0DXZ DM33 Sun City AZ

I finally got my satellite antenna system up, using with my IC-910H,? Everything works well on? 144mhz, I have separate inline SWR - power meters for 144 and 432, SWR and PO on? 144 is good. When I? transmit on 432,,, I get good output, but no SWR reading. The antenna is , hopefully, circular right polarized, an old Cushcraft 416TB. As I go up and down the band, the PO increaes, decreases, as if it puts out more power where it is resonant, but the SWR meter reads nothing, no matter where i am on the band. is this because of the hook up for circular polarization? I am hesitant to? apply much power if I dont know the SWR. I can hit local repeaters, so i know something is going out the antenna, and it seems to hear OK. Haven't tried listening to the satellites yet. Why wont it read SWR on the circular polarized 432 antenna? Reads Power Out, but no SWR reading. Thanks to Alex, EU1PA, Chairman of the BFRR, I have secured the callsign EW/ G0SFJ which I hope to operate on Sunday 20th April on AO-51 and possibly SO-50 from Minsk, Belarus. Due to import restrictions on radio transceivers I will be helped in this enterprise by radio hams from Minsk who will lend me equipment for the passes. You may not be aware that AMSAT-Australia and the Ozsatgroup have amalgamated, and that the new combined group has retained the name AMSAT-Australia. AMSAT-Australia and the Ozsatgroup have been working together for more than two years, and have been discussing such an amalgamation for some time. The decision to go ahead with the amalgamation was made after Graham Ratcliff, VK5AGR formally tended his resignation as AMSAT-Australia National Coordinator and as AMSAT Coordinator for the Wireless Institute of Australia (WIA) in his annual report to the WIA 2008 Federal Convention on Monday, 7th Aprill 2008. The role of AMSAT-Australia National Coordinator has been taken on by myself Paul Paradigm, VK2TXT, formally the Coordinator of the Ozsatgroup, and joined by Judy Williams, VK2TJU in the role of AMSAT-Australia Secretary. I concur with Chris. I cannot thank Mike DK3WN enough for all of the help he has provided my ability to capture and decode telemetry. In fact, without his help, I wouldn't be able to do much with AO-16 and its telemetry... His occasional posting of telemetry is a good reminder that these birds are alive and working well. He doesn't post every telemetry frame, every day. His posts are periodic and helpful. *** CV1LAI - Globosat 01 *** Globosat 01 is the first uruguayan telemetry test from high altitude balloon of the LAI Project. CX0CFI (Club Facultad de Ingenieria) invites to the amateur radio community to participate and report telemetry data. * Date To be defined. Probably on Thursday 24 of April of 2008 (15:00 UTC aprox.) * Trajectory and flight plan The globosat will come out from the department of Durazno (central Uruguay), what would allow the recovery of the team inside national territory. The balloon should ascend to a speed of between 200 and 300 meters per minute, and to arrive until a maximum height of approximately 30.000m (like reference, the commercial flights go at 10.000m). Arrival that height, the difference of pressure among the interior and external of the balloon makes it explode. The equipment will fall with parachute. * Telemetry The platform send telemetry information in standard APRS format in 2m. band. The APRS message goes encapsulated in a AX.25 (Packet) frames and modulated in AFSK (1200 bps) FM. * Data: Callsign: CV1LAI (special callsign for the Globosat during these days) Mode: APRS (over AX.25 1200bps) Frequency: 145.030 MHz Power: 1W. Cubesat question

Hi AMSATs, It has been a long time ago that I have been active "on-air", and here on AMSAT-BB. Reason is to little time, and because of that I choose to improve my home lab and spend my late after work hours there, and not in front of the rigs hihi... It is very interresting to see the work of the Delfi team, and they are now on the place where I was in 2005 with the Indian HAMSAT (VO-52) :) I can tell you its a hot place, in matters of sun and also hot (spicy) food hihi... I wish the team a good launch, and I will spend some more time to get my station ready to receive Delfi after launch... I have not been active "on-air", but even more active with designing some new transponders. The reason I had to improve my home lab is because I wanted to design a very small transponder, that would fit easily in 1-cube satellite. With 0805 SMD this was even not possible anymore, so I went even to smaller sized SMD. (I guess the next step is my own made chip hihi). My final design ended up in a 7cm x 7cm x 0,4cm prototype version. I guess this is small enough to fit in a cubesat :) Some details: Mode-B, Power supply 3.3V, >500mW PEP out, 30kHz Bandwidth (flat), with AGC, CW beacon incl, ~200 grams weight. Now I am fixing up my design to get it from a home made prototype into a more profesional "flight" version. My idea is to make several of these transponders, and make them also available for other (cube)sat groups. However, now I am stuck with the question what the standards are for mounting hardware in cubesat structures. I don't have a cubesat (for the moment) because they are not in the cheap price class for me as a ham. On the other hand I have no experience in any cubesat project, and don't know all the ins and outs. Maybe some cubesat expert can give me an idea how to make my final PCB (screw holes, sizes) in an efficient way to have my 7cm x 7cm x 0.4cm fit in other cubesat projects, in case some group will be interrested. Beside my analog transponder I also like to have a pacsat system, to have it together in my future own cubesat. The pacsat system is an efficient system and I think its worth to have it back again. Does anyone know if there is a group or ham that made (can make) such a system in cubesat format ? With todays small sized, low voltage, high speed and high amount of memory processors it should be no problem for a digital guru I guess. (I mean the pacsat system like KO-23/25 alike). FO29 with its altitude gave us a shot here in San Diego, but unless some DXpedition goes to Siberia it wouldn't do us much good!! I get on O7 and VO52, and often find no takers... DX watering Hole

Greetings from the North West I would like to suggest (may have been done in the past) we establish a unofficial DX watering hole on AO-7. Given the very limited time to just find footprint edge to edge contacts. The middle of the passband (145-155), is usually filled with "local" cw/ssb qso's. How does 145.957-145.960 sound as our DX "hot spot"? Mika OH8MBN usually hangs out there, I have talked to him with elevations 2-4 degrees each way. At the risk of getting flamed - I am quite happy to see the occasional telemetry postings on this bb. Mike DK3WN does a great job with FREE software which you can download off his web site. It has software for telemetry decode for just about all of the current satellites. Software is easy to load and use, and works. Give it a try, telemetry can be fun. Structure of Alog, Blog and Elog files on AO-51 and GO-32

Hi I'm trying to set up www.amsat.dk so that it can display the contents of the log files generated by the satellites. I have the alogdisp and blogdisp programs from the amsat.org SW repositories but they appear not to use the correct structure definitions. Could somebody please supply me with the current structure. Hi all, I was just looking at the Dayton Hamvention web site and noticed that the AMSAT forum will be on Saturday from 0900 to 1130. I also noticed a couple of other forums that may be of interest.
