Visable Iss pass

I saw the ISS pass from North west to South east this morning about 6:00 am local At 2 miles high and with a snowy winter I have missed any possibility of viewing it with the old eyes. KiwiSAT Experimental package

For our KiwiSAT experimental package we need to decode 9600 data simultaneously on the VHF and UHF (Main and Sub) Bands and would like to know which of the popular satellite multimode transceivers are capable of doing so. Icom IC2720H Full Duplex

I was trying to work AO-27 this afternoon. Maybe I'm wrong, but I thought the IC2720H would operate in "Full Duplex", i.e. being able to transmit on one band while simultaneously receiving on the other. I had my left band set on the uplink of 145.850 and the right band set to the downlink of 436.795 (adjusting for doppler). I was able to hear the downlink just fine. When I tried to transmit on the left band (set as the main band) the audio on the right band would mute. Thus, I was unable to hear if I was hitting the satellite. I have the sub-band mute feature set to off. Is there anyone in the group that uses this radio that could help me out? Thanks, Kent -- Kent R. Frazier, K5KNT

[This message is resent -- for some reason it never made it yesterday] Trevor, M5AKA reports on the passing today of Arthur C Clark in 4S7-land. You might be interested in knowing that Arthur was an AMSAT Life Member. His member number, quite fittingly, was LM-2001. In the 1970's and 80's, Arthur was a frequent visitor to NASA. He was listed in the Goddard phone director as a consultant in the LANDSAT group, and he also served as a consultant at NASA HQ. In the early 1980's (when I was AMSAT President), on a trip to Washington, Dick Daniels (W4PUJ), Jan King (W3GEY) and I made the presentation of honorary AMSAT LM-2001 to Arthur. He was most appreciative and spent a couple of hours talking with us about our being the "Wright Brothers" of the satellite world, building satellites in our basements and garages. Arthur communicated with us several times in the years following that visit. He asked that his LM-2001 Journal subscription be sent in his name to a library in Sri Lanka. 73, Tom

Hi John my reply was in no way a critique of the article I just thought it should not specifically refer to one particular single channel bird but to all. Of course reference could be made to AO51 as a particularly bad example but so far as I am concerned they are as bad as each other in one way or another. Clarke; Sci-Fi Writer Foresaw Mankind's Possibilities By Patricia Sullivan Washington Post Staff Writer Wednesday, March 19, 2008; B07 Arthur C. Clarke, 90, the world-famous science-fiction writer, futurist and unofficial poet laureate of the space age, died of a respiratory ailment March 18 at his home in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Mr. Clarke co-wrote, with director Stanley Kubrick, the screenplay for "2001: A Space Odyssey," which is regarded by many as one of the most important science fiction films made. A prolific writer, with more than 100 published books, he was praised for his ability to foresee the possibilities of human innovation and explain them to non-scientific readers. The most famous example is from 1945, when he first proposed the idea of communications satellites that could be based in geostationary orbits, which keep satellites in a fixed position relative to the ground. Some scoffed, but the idea was proved almost a generation later with the launch of Early Bird, the first of the commercial satellites that provide global communications networks for telephone, television and high-speed digital communication. The orbit is now named Clarke Orbit by the International Astronomical Union. "He had influenced the world in the best way possible," writer Ray Bradbury said in Neil McAleer's 1992 book "Arthur C. Clarke: The Authorized Biography." "Arthur's ideas have sent silent engines into space to speak in tongues. His fabulous communications satellite ricocheted about in his head long before it leaped over the mountains and flatlands of the Earth." In addition to his books, he wrote more than 1,000 short stories and essays. One of his short stories, "Dial F for Frankenstein" (1964), inspired British computer scientist Tim Berners-Lee to invent the World Wide Web in 1989. Mr. Clarke also popularized the idea of a space elevator as an energy-efficient alternative to rockets. Conceived by a Russian engineer in 1960 and re-invented at least four times in the next decades, Mr. Clarke's inclusion of the idea in a 1979 novel brought it to popular attention and helped launch a new field of study. He told New Scientist magazine last year that it would be built "50 years after everyone stops laughing." But it was his collaboration with Kubrick in the 1968 film that made him internationally famous. The screenplay for "2001: A Space Odyssey" was based on Mr. Clarke's 1951 short story "The Sentinel," and Mr. Clarke simultaneously wrote the companion novel, which was released three months after the film and was believed by many to be a more detailed explanation of the ideas in the film. Mr. Clarke's work inspired the names of spacecraft, an asteroid and a species of dinosaur. He joined American broadcaster Walter Cronkite as a commentator on the Apollo moonshots in the late 1960s. Two television series in the 1980s spread his ideas around the world. He was knighted in 1998, nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1994 and received the Franklin Institute gold medal, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization-Kalinga Prize and other honors. Mr. Clarke, a resident of Sri Lanka since 1956, worked with Jacques Cousteau and others to help perfect scuba equipment. He moved to the country, then known as Ceylon, to open a dive shop and explore the undersea world. Disabled by post-polio syndrome, the lingering effects of a disease that had paralyzed him for two months in 1959, Mr. Clarke said diving was as close as he could get to the weightless feeling of space. "I'm perfectly operational underwater," he once said. His dive shop was destroyed in the 2004 tsunami. Born Dec. 17, 1917, in Minehead, Somerset, England, he was the son of a postal service engineer turned farmer and a post office telegrapher. He became addicted to science fiction at 11. In 1936, he moved to London and joined the British Interplanetary Society and began writing science fiction. After enlisting in the Royal Air Force in 1941, he became a radar instructor and participated in the development of ground-controlled landings of aircraft under zero-visibility conditions. That experience proved the inspiration for his only non-science-fiction novel, "Glide Path." It is also where, in 1945, he wrote an RAF memo about satellites. He later revised it and submitted it as "Extra-Terrestrial Relays" to Wireless World, which almost rejected it as too far-fetched. He was wrong about some things: He expected that three satellites would take care of the world's communication needs and that each would require a crew in residence. After World War II, Mr. Clarke obtained a bachelor of science degree in physics and mathematics at King's College, London. In 1954, Mr. Clarke wrote to Harry Wexler, then chief of the Scientific Services Division at the U.S. Weather Bureau, about satellite applications for weather forecasting. From these discussions, a new branch of meteorology was born. Mr. Clarke's marriage to Marilyn Mayfield ended in divorce. Survivors include a brother and sister, both of whom live in England. According to a news release from the Arthur C. Clarke Foundation, Mr. Clarke reviewed the final manuscript of his latest science fiction novel, "The Last Theorem," a few days ago. It is scheduled to be published later this year. Although he rarely left Sri Lanka, he kept in touch with the rest of the world by using the satellite communication he predicted so long ago. He told the Associated Press that he didn't regret never going into space because he had arranged to have the DNA from his hair sent into orbit. "Some day, some super civilization may encounter this relic from the vanished species and I may exist in another time," he said. In a 90th birthday video recorded in December, Mr. Clarke said he had only three last wishes: That someone find evidence of extraterrestrial life; that the world adopt clean energy sources; and that an end be found to the long civil war in Sri Lanka. "I'm sometimes asked how I would like to be remembered. I've had a diverse career as a writer, underwater explorer, space promoter and science populariser," he said. "Of all these, I want to be remembered most as a writer -- one who entertained readers, and, hopefully, stretched their imagination as well."

Gentlemen, Jonathon, thanks for the fix, I'll add it to the next release. I tested this make on OSX and cygwin and the flags were not needed, I'm downloading Debian now to run under parallels on the mac so will be able to test for linux requirements in future. Geoeff, GAL is intended to be a super-set of routines that may or may not be of use to astrodynamics experimenters. David's work on bringing SGP4 up-to-date will be included, albeit in a slightly modified form - it will be altered to be compatible with the gal vector/matrix library and reference frame implementations. GAL will also eventually include direct numerical integration, i.e. orbit propagation direct from gravity and other force models. This will allow orbit propagation for bodies other than the Earth, e.g. the Moon and Mars (Phase 5A). Its going to be a long project, and I've got no timetable, I'll release as each block gets bolted down. A lot of what is going into GAL is based upon research done for the Station Program version 2 ( an aborted project from the early 1990s). Hi Scott, Jeff, K7WIN is controller the Rotor using the GS-232B interface. Well, this is the second part of the puzzle. I'm doing doppler control of an IC-910H using SATPC32 and it works great. Coax run on the Beams

Hi All I have a question regarding the coax run on the boom or cross arm supporting the Vhf and Uhf beams. All these years I was feeding the coax to the beams running it backwards and allowing it to drop behind the relector downward as suggested, that it does not affect the performance. But most pictures I see these days have the coax being run forward towards the centre and supported on the crossarm and brought downward to the AZEL rotor. Now does these different coax runs have any effect on the performance forward gain or radiation pattern ? Just a few days ago I had a tough time on the new tower lifting the 2 beams with coax weight at the back and placing it on the rotator. Hence if it does not matter much I plan to change the coax run towards the centre and bring to the crossarm holding the V and U cross yagis. Good Afternoon, all... Robert, I think the main point that Ben is trying to make with these "friendly suggestions" is civility. Love the single-channel FM satellites or not, they are a fact of life throughout AMSAT. And AO-51 is arguably the worst as far as manners and good operating procedures are concerned. This doesn't mean that it doesn't happen on other single-channel birds. Consider this: You are trying to give a demo to a group that's interested in satellite-based Amateur Radio. You do your best to convey ease of use, technical skill and accomplishment, and the fact that satellite hams in general are a great bunch of guys...etc etc etc. Then, you tune into AO-51 for the demo...and you hear "the Zoo". Some of it is just common sense...like using headphones...not using too much power (we ALL know at least one person that does), but Ben worded some of the suggestions to try to "level the field", and help to make it more fair for everyone. As our fleet gets older, and more satellites become non-operational...and more Amateurs enter the ranks, the FM satellites will undoubtedly get worse, more crowded, etc. As this becomes reality, there are 3 routes to take to solve the "problem": A) Move to the Linear Satellites...B) Build more FM Satellites (which some will absolutely HATE)...or C) Learn to become a more efficient operator and get along with each other. Sadly, though...I have a feeling that this will reignite the Linear Vs. FM debate. The last I knew, Nova didn't control Doppler by itself only rotor control. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong about this. SatPC32 is the software to go with for both rotor and Doppler control. Somebody out there should have a 910 set up with SatPC32! SatPC32 is somewhat hard to get going and operate but runs really well once you get used to it. Look in your 910 manual and see if there is an display indicator that comes on when you establish communications between the radio and the PC. Courteous AO-51 Operation

With the ever increasing madhouse that AO-51 is becoming, and with spring just around the corner adding more users to the satellite, I've typed up a fairly simple "do's and don'ts" guide to working AO-51. The guide focuses more on etiquette and operational guidelines rather then technical ideas, because there are already some excellent guides out there for the new user to read up on. This was more or less conceived one night in #amsat on irc.dishnuts.net while discussing the operational issues on AO-51. The satellite is a very good, very easy satellite to get into, however, the more people jam on, the harder it is for people to use it. So, myself, John (KB2HSH), Charles (N3CRT), and Mark (KF6KYI) all tossed around ideas on what is more a less a good "code of conduct" for AO-51 operation. Rovers and DXpeditions in mode J-FM [was: Swan Island DXpedition update]

Please, PLEASE! If someone is on a J-FM satellite with rare-to-uncommon grid square(s), don't contact people you have worked before, especially those you've worked often. If you do, then people like the Swan Island DXpedition won't bother with satellite as it won't be worth carrying the equipment. Last week, I was about 30 feet (10m) from a grid square corner on private property, and i was only able to give out two of the four grid squares (at least one was uncommon-to-rare) because of the chaos on AO-27 that pass. Since i record all nearly all J-FM passes, i was planning to take contacts three at a time from two grid square boundaries; but that just wasn't possible. So i don't think i even got everyone from the northern grid square pair. PLEASE, on transcontinental passes and especially with very rare grids, save your routine traffic for other time. In most places, there are lots of other passes (especially on SO-50) where there were very few people on. I was at CN85/CN86 yesterday on SO-50 and there was only one station to work! 'Regulars', instead of chatting with your fiends, please briefly explain the situation and/or suggest that people work the uncommon/rare grids [as several 'regulars' do already]. Many folks don't have the time (or bandwidth) to read AMSAT-BB. Hope to talk to you on the way south through central Oregon and perhaps eastern California. I'm still hoping for at least one grid square corner. AO-16 tracking using MacDoppler

I use MacDoppler very successfully all the time. What it does on birds like AO-16 is what called full doppler correction. In other words it adjusts the uplink frequency so that it is received at the satellite at a constant frequency. Well, the "23 hour boat ride" took 31 hours, rough seas and slow going. I was not too active on the LEOs due to the conditions, although had a lot of fun working MM on HF from the bridge. We landed about 2:30pm and worked fantically to get set up before dark. One HF SSB station is in operation this evening, although we are having technical problems with the generators and some rigs. Boyd and I worked late to get the 2m station up, the 6m antenna goes up in the morning. We made one EME qso with W5UN and then lost the amp, may be just a cable issue. Look for us on Ping Jockeys in the morning. 73, Bill NZ5N Worked our very first QSO of the expedition with W5VG on AO-27 with the HT and the Arrow before the generators were turned on. Also worked a few on AO-51 this evening. Help with rotor control and GS-232B

Hope I can get some good feedback on this issue. I bought a GS-232B and "assumed" (sigh) that it would be backwards compatible (meaning anything written for any GS-232 would work) I don't seem so lucky (or at least it seams that way with NOVA for Windows). I'm looking for suggestions on what software package (or combination) I need to control my ICOM 910H and my GS-232B. Help with AO-16 and "reverse tracking"

Hi. I'm pretty new to all this. I've had one successful contact in my life (with ISS, no less!), but I decided last night to try AO-16. I have an ICOM IC-910H. I put it into satellite mode, and set it up to receive LSB/USB on 437.0260 MHz, and transmit FM on 145.9200 MHz. One thing the IC-910H instructions said to do is transmit a tone (like a whistle) and be sure one can receive that. After listening for some time (to a nearly overhead pass), at 5am, I tried doing that. Now, I *think* I heard myself, but a weird thing was if my whistle tone got lower in pitch it sounded higher. Not sure if that was just my imagination. In any case, MacDoppler seemed to be changing frequencies differently for transmit vs. receive. The 910H's manual talks about reverse tracking, where doppler on receive goes up while it goes down on transmit. Could someone clarify these things for me? Why would they be different? Predict 2.2.3 for Linux

I just installed Ubuntu Linux 7.10 and Predict 2.2.3 on my notebook. When I start Predict I get the "new user" screen where I enter the required information. After pressing the "enter" key on the last entry I get a command prompt. I can not seem to get to the main menu. Is anyone using this software that could offer some suggestions? AMSAT: As I have been interested in finding ways to offer emergency communications support via some of our satellites if possible, I came across this topic which might provide a useful consideration for ham radio emergecny planning... That is, conider the magic "8 hour" rule being pushed by the FCC onto the cell phone companies. Attached below is more than you want to know about it, but it suggested to me a thought for Ham radio. That is, if ham radio is going to "offer services" for emergency preparedness, then if we made sure that we could offer more than "8 hours of black-out" communications, then we are one step ahead of the nations cellular network... To avoid similar debacles in the future, the Federal Communications Commission wants most cell transmitter sites in the U.S. to have at least eight hours of backup power in the event main power fails, one of several moves regulators say will make the nation's communication system stronger and more reliable. Two and a half years after Katrina and eight months after the FCC's regulations were first released, the two sides are still wrestling with the issue. A federal appeals court in Washington, D.C., put those regulations on hold last week while it considers an appeal by some in the wireless industry. Several cell phone companies, while agreeing their networks need to become more resilient, have opposed the FCC's backup power regulations, claiming they were illegally drafted and would present a huge economic and bureaucratic burden. There are almost 210,000 cell towers and roof-mounted cell sites across the country, and carriers have said many would require some modification. At least one industry estimate puts the per-site price tag at up to $15,000. In a request for the FCC to delay implementing the change, Sprint Nextel Corp. wrote that the rules would lead to "staggering and irreparable harm" for the company. The cost couldn't be recouped through legal action or passed on to consumers, it said. Jackie McCarthy, director of governmental affairs for PCIA - The Wireless Infrastructure Association, said the government should allow the industry to decide how best to keep its networks running, pointing out that all the backup power in the world won't help a cell tower destroyed by wind or wildfires. "Our members' position is that the 'one size fits all' approach to requiring eight hours of backup power at all cell sites really doesn't accomplish the commission's stated purpose of providing reliable wireless coverage," McCarthy said. The wireless carriers also are claiming the FCC failed to follow federal guidelines for creating new mandates and went far beyond its authority when it created the eight-hour requirement last summer. FCC officials have so far stood their ground. "We find that the benefits of ensuring sufficient emergency backup power, especially in times of crisis involving possible loss of life or injury, outweighs the fact that carriers may have to spend resources, perhaps even significant resources, to comply with the rule," the agency said in a regulatory filing. "The need for backup power in the event of emergencies has been made abundantly clear by recent events, and the cost of failing to have such power may be measured in lives lost," it said. A panel of experts appointed by the FCC following Katrina was critical of how communications networks performed during and after the storm. The group noted that service restoration was "a long and slow process." Panel members recommended the FCC work with telecommunications companies to make their networks more robust. Regulators then created the eight-hour mandate, exempting carriers with fewer than 500,000 subscribers. Wireless companies quickly complained about the regulations, calling them arbitrary and saying they would rob them of the flexibility to target backup power upgrades at the most important or most vulnerable cell sites in their networks. They also said local zoning rules, existing leases and structural limitations could make it impossible to add batteries or backup generators to cell sites. Miles Schreiner, director of national operations planning for T-Mobile, said it can take 1,500 pounds or more of batteries to provide eight hours of backup energy in areas with a lot of cell phone traffic. "In urban areas, most of the sites are on rooftops and those sites weren't built to hold that much weight," Schreiner said. In regulatory filings, the FCC has said the wireless carriers chose to put their equipment in areas that can't be readily expanded. However, the agency agreed in October that it would exempt cell sites from the rules but only if the wireless carrier provided paperwork proving the exemption was necessary. It would give companies six months from when the rules went into effect to submit those reports and then another six months to either bring the sites into compliance or explain how they would provide backup service to those areas through other means, such as portable cellular transmitters. CTIA-The Wireless Association and several carriers asked the U.S. Court of Appeals in Washington, D.C., to intervene, saying the exemptions would still leave wireless companies scrambling to inspect and compile reports on thousands of towers. On Feb. 28, the court granted Sprint Nextel's request to stay the regulations while the case moves forward. Oral arguments are scheduled for May. An FCC spokesman said the agency was disappointed with court's decision. Not all carriers have joined the fight. Verizon Wireless is not a party to the appeal and has a history of installing backup generators and batteries to its cell sites. Most famously, during a 2003 blackout that kept much of the Northeast in the dark for hours, Verizon customers could still communicate. AT&T, the nation's largest wireless carrier, would not comment on the FCC regulations. McCarthy, whose organization represents both the wireless carriers and companies that lease space on their own cell towers, said her members worry that they will face a high hurdle to get exemptions. "I don't think it's hyperbole or exaggeration to say if it gets to that point with specific sites it could lead to sites being decommissioned," she said. "If the ultimate endgame is a site being turned off because of noncompliance, the area immediately around that site is going to have an immediate negative impact. It's going to hurt public safety from day one." OSCAR-11 REPORT 17 March 2008 OSCAR-11 celebrated its 24th birthday on 01 March 2008. It was designed, built and launched, within a time scale of six months, using commercially available components. Congratulations to Professor Sir Martin Sweeting G3YJO, his team at the University of Surrey and associated groups of radio amateurs, for their magnificient achievement. This report covers the period from 17 February to 17 March 2008. The satellite was heard from 03 to 13 March. Previously the transmissions which started on 11 February were terminated prematurely after only four days. The watchdog timer cycle appears to have continued for its full 21 days, thus restarting transmissions on 03 March. Signals have been very variable in strength sometimes very strong, sometimes undetectable, even at high elevations. Low signal strength was particularly noticeable at AOS and LOS, and also towards the end of the transmission period, which on this occasion, lasted the full ten days. The next transmissions should start on 24 March. However, permanent eclipses start a few days beforehand, which will probably cause the transmission period to be terminated prematurely, and may even prevent it being heard at all. After March it is unlikely that the satellite will support any sustained period of operation, and will only transmit for a short time, possibly less than a single orbit, every 21 days. The real time clock now serves as a crude indicator of the state of the satellite. Between 04 and 13 March showed an average loss of over two hours per day. time every orbit. When last heard the clock was 83.0958 days slow. I am indebted to Peter ZL3TC, Mark KU7Z, John KB2HSH, Antonio EA1CXG, Edward BX1AD and Andrew VK5LAC for their reports. Many thanks. The satellite is now in continuous sunlight, and this is expected to continue until mid March, when eclipses will start again. Unfortunately eclipses will then become a permanent feature of the orbit, which is likely to prevent any periods of sustained operation after March. The current status of the satellite, is that all the analogue telemetry channels, 0 to 59 are zero, ie they have failed. The status channels 60 to 67 are still working. The real time clock is showing a large accumulated error, although over short periods timekeeping is accurate to a few seconds per month. The day of the month has a bit stuck at 'one' so the day of the month may show an error of +40 days for some dates. The time display has switched into 12 hour mode. Unfortunately, there is no AM/PM indicator, since the time display format was designed for 24 hour mode. The spacecraft computer and active attitude control system have switched OFF, ie. the satellite' attitude is controlled only by the passive gravity boom gradient, and the satellite is free to spin at any speed. When telemetry was last received it showed that one of the solar arrays had failed, and there was a large unexplained current drain on the main 14 volt bus. After 23 years in orbit the battery has undergone around 100,000 partial charge/discharge cycles, and observations suggest that it cannot power the satellite during eclipses, or sometimes during periods of poor solar attitude. The watchdog timer now operates on a 20 day cycle. The ON/OFF times have tended to be very consistent. The average of many observations show this to be 20.7 days, ie. 10.3 days ON followed by 10.4 days OFF. However, poor solar attitude may result may result in a low 14 volt line supply, which may cause the beacon to switch OFF prematurely, and reset the watchdog timer cycle. When this occurs, the beacon is OFF for 20.7 days. The Beacon frequencies are - VHF 145.826 MHz. AFSK FM ASCII Telemetry UHF 435.025 MHz. OFF S-band 2401.5 MHz. Field Day 2008 Rules (correction)

I had made a mistake and did not show AO16 as a single channel FM satellite even though the downlink is DSB (I showed it as if it were like FO29 and AO7 .... multi-user). I have updated the rules on my website and they will shortly be updated at amsat.org. AO-51 transmitter shut down?

On the "gut pass" (as I like to call it), right up the middle of the USA at Mar 17 ~0040Z the ao-51 435.300 transmitter shut off for an estimated 5-10 seconds, enough for me to stare at my computer and radio to wonder if I hit a button, then it came back and I heard K7WIN and i believe N5AFV verify that it indeed happened. Was it just being programed by a ground station at that time or is it something we should continue to watch for? I did not have a recording of it, maybe someone else does. N3CRT Charlie

2-to-1 spliiter with DC pass?

I have an Icom 910, the preamp control is very convenient for turning on masthead preamps. I also have an Icom R8500 comm receiver and I would like to do a little hacking with the 10.7MHz IF output of the R8500 using the same antenna feed as the IC-910. So, is there a 2-1 splitter available that will pass DC from the 910 to the antenna but not to the other receiver? Also some sort of arrangement that doesn't blow up the R8500 would be kind of nice in case I accidentally key the 910 transmitter. thanks, jeff AD6EO

And if we are to fulfill our radio service mission, are we not all supposed to be prepared to comunicate in emergencies? So it has always been a surprise of mine that some very active hams in fact do not have an FM rig in their car... I'm not saying they need to use it, but It seems that it would be good preparation to have one, at least an HT in the glove box. I guess it is the boy scout legacy to be prepared. But then today, that means having a cell phone, not a ham radio....;-) On the otherhand, I can admire that many people do in fact have another life besides ham radio too. I now drive to and from work, purposefully not on any commuter repeater. But my APRS position report always shows what frequency I am monitoring so that I can be called if needed. Family communications also plays a big part, and so monitoring a normally quiet repeater makes contact easier. A brief satellite pass is also fun sometimes. This is just my current state in life. It will change. So I do not in anyway suggest any judgement on others use of Ham radio or lack thereof. I actually longingly remember 20 years ago when I actually did have some time to play radio while doing something other than commuting... And the empty nest is less than a year away... Bob, WbAPR

Kent, et al: I also use Ubuntu 7.10...and find it both intellectually stimulating and refreshing to use an OS other than a flavor of Windows that's ACTUALLY useful and robust. It may seem a bit of blasphemy, but Ubuntu (and most Linux distros) either have WINE or can be loaded WITH WINE. That being said, I use Orbitron....the same Orbitron for Windows. Incorrect statistics.

Igor ... if either you, or any one of your friends could write a similar program for AO-7 I would support and promote it. There are a couple of other AO-7 logs doing the rounds but they can't compare. The great advantage of Emily's pages is that it is *MORE* than a mere log, the statistical information for what is among the oldest working equipment in space (!!!) is a tremendous resource ... but unfortunately, due to accumulative errors, the statistics over time will be incorrect. Actually, I'm rather surprised Amsat doesn't use this information more ... to it's advantage. Countless reminders and plea's re: filling out the log have *NOT* helped. Gulf Alpha questions

I am interested in a dual band, circular polarized antenna system, I like the Gulf Alpha system, from the reviews i have read. But their web site is a bit thin on info. I go to the dual band section, it talks about FM antennas...not sure why they would be FM... they arent tuned for SSB part of band or what? What is the model number of their satellite packages? Lo-19 beacon

I was listening to the inspiring beacon from LO-19, "lusathihi", and noticed something on my screen in speclab: The carrier seems to continue faintly, after the transmission is over. During the 20 second pause between telemetry frames, I can see the carrier continue but very faintly, all the way through to the start of the next frame. I can only see this when the bird is right in my beam, as I can't adjust my elevation, and only have a small yagi/preamp, so that the transmissions are at least S-7, then the carrier is just visible on my display. No, the title is *NOT* a grammatical error, it's an exclamation of exasperation by the white rabbit in Lewis Carrol's Alice In Wonderland. Congratulations are extended to 9M6YBG for working JH7PKU, JA1BCL, JR3KQJ and JA3DJX with the transponder OFF - (according to his report). "Extra" points for not noticing and correcting the mistake after the first day. Ditto to IK1RAN, also for working UT1FG with the transponder OFF ... but credit for changing it to ON and YT1FG ... even if he did leave both entries on the same pass. Opinion regarding satellite radios

I have a TS2000 and am considering buying a second radio as a backup for satellite work. I am sure there are many opinions out there, but I was wondering if some of you might consider sharing any recommendations for a satellite capable radio that is capable of working all 455/145 FM/SSB and that is controllable via TRX-Manager. For those that used to listen to the recorded version of the Houston AMSAT net online at my website. It is back. Starting last week, Dale, WD0AKO, is recording the net, dropping it to MP3 and adding artwork (for iPod/iPhone/MP3 players).
