This is very sad indeed. I met Bracewell and talked to him several times. When Maureen Quirk figured out she could not get some FFT stuff through my thick head, she gave me Bracewell's book and it opened up the world to me. I had never heard of a Hartley transform or a cosine transform and I had great new toys to work with. I made it a point to get acquainted with him after this and thank him. You can bet that almost everyone who has ever worked on the MPEG video compression techniques learned most of the Discrete Cosine Transform theory from Bracewell. Thank you for all the hard work you put into making FO-29 work again. This evening (2007-08-16), I listened to its beacon. Though I wasn't able to decode or record it, I can report that from my location on the east coast of Canada, it was audible well past the point when SatPC32 believed the bird was in eclipse (roughly 6:51Z). I can help with this question: Glen Martin no longer offers a thrust bearing. They are suggesting use of a Yaesu GS065 as a substitute. The 45AG4 and BPL45G both have a 3" i.d. hole where the bearing mounts. Neither the old Glen Martn bearing or the GS065 will properly cover a hole this size and you would also have to drill new mounting holes. The Rohn TB3 and TB4 fit without any modifications. The azimuth rotor part of a Yaesu G5500 will fit the AS455G rotor plate without modifications. You will need a Yaesu separation kit to mount the elevation part of the G5500 to a mast above the top of the tower. Yaesu 5500 rotor problem

Well I finally recovered enough from my shoulder operation to take down my 5500 rotor. I took it apart and the three wires going to the pot seem ok, bummer. I also checked the cables as best I could and they seem ok. Is it possible the azimuth rotor indicater pot is bad? If so how do I check it? 73 Jeff kb2m >

Help with WiSP software, IC-821H and KAM-XL

I've been struggling with WiSP since day one. I have a IC-821H and TNC model KAM-XL and have not been able to get it to communicate with any satellite although I heard the bird CW. Mode-J Desense Cure

13 August 2007 NW2S de S.I. Scott, Charlie, N5TD, offers you good advise with his recommendations for eliminating your "Mode-J" desense problem. There are several possible sources of the overload trouble, viz: - 1. Third harmonic output from your 2M Tx. 2. Brute force (2M) overload of your 70cm Rx system, particularly a low noise pre-amplifier. This will generate 70cm energy even from a 100% clean 2M signal. 3. Third harmonic generation (of the 2M signal) by a "dirty" joint, which acts like a diode, in the antenna system. The solutions that we offer are: - 1. Our 2M Lowpass filter, model MMf200-7. This is a 7-section, lumped constant, lowpass LC filter. We guarantee at least 40dB suppression at 435MHz, reference the 2M response. Typically you will get over 50dB suppression. The insertion loss (actually reflection loss) at 2m is typically 0.5dB. You install this to the 2M transmitter's output coax connector. 2. Our 70cm, low loss, Bandpass filter, model PSf432. This is a 3-section, 0.1db ripple, Interdigital, bandpass filter. The insertion loss at 435MHz is typically 0.1dB The attenuation at 335MHz is typically 80dB, and continuing down at lower frequencies. Install this, on the tower, at the input of your 70cm pre-amplifier. Water will not harm it or change its characteristics (provide a drain hole). 3. Careful attention to all mechanical joints on your antennae and the tower (make sure all joints are clean and tight) is the solution to this possible cause. A "dirty" joint acts like a diode. It rectifies the Tx 2M signal generating and radiating harmonic energy, which enters the 70cm system with negligible attenuation. See our advertisement in CQ-VHF for other details. PS: Don't use a 2M interdigital bandpass filter (our PSf144) on the output of your 2M transmitter. Being a transmission line style filter, it has multiple low loss passbands at odd harmonic frequencies. Its attenuation at 435MHz is negligible! 73s, de John G3BVU/W1. It's the "standard directions" function in the "Rotor" menu. It allows you to create a list of names and their associated azimuths. After the list is created, go into the "Rotor" menu and click on the name to steer the antennas to that azimuth. It doesn't support an elevation, but Erich DK1TB might be willing to make a custom version that stores elevations as well. Unless your antennas have extremely narrow beamwidth, or unless you are extremely close to a very large mountain, you should be fine with the elevation fixed at the horizon. I guess that you have the rotor on a moveable platform such as a truck, spacecraft. watercraft, etc. The look angle to the fixed object is the reciprocal of the angle generated by the tracking program. Success - and thanks!

I can finally report a successful satellite QSO! Many thanks to all of you for your very useful feedback. I ended up using my existing 2m/70cm 3el beam on the TV rotator with the addition of an SSB preamp for 70cm. There are still a couple of limitations with my system. The first being that the antenna is fixed at a 0 degree elevation. I was able to work AO-51 from 7 degrees above the horizon, but lose it around 20 or so degrees elevation. While it's great that I can work it that far out, I'm losing out on the better passes with less path-loss. The other downside is that even with two transceivers, I'm unable to work full-duplex. The two bands on the antenna use seperate elements and feed points, but share a boom. Transmitting on 2m completely overloads the front-end of the IC-7000. While full duplex would be useful, it's not absolutely necessary. My primary goal is achieving reliable, repeatable communications (i.e. removing the luck from the equation as much as possible!). Hopefully I'll be able to reproduce yesterday's performance with my exising kit for a little while longer and consider how to add a permanent elevation and slightly longer booms. Regards, Scott NW2S

Satellite ground station at the 2007 AMSAT Space Symposium

One of the events that will take place at the 2007 AMSAT Space Symposium is an operating satellite ground station will be available for use and demonstration. This station will have the capability to automatically track satellites using 2-meter and 70-cm circular polarized antennas and a Yaesu FT-847 that is appropriately computer controlled. We would like to demonstrate communication with digital satellites like GO-32 and AO-51 using WISP but we need assistance. We would also like to have telemetry capture and analysis demonstrated. JARL report about FO-29 (Fuji-3) status and operation, 7 Aug 2007 The inside impedance of battery in FO-29 (Fuji-3) are rising now extremely by deterioration at time. According to the telemetry data and the eclipse rate of the satellite main body (the rate that a day is not), 25 minutes are supposed with a limit as for the analog battery system use. Because the eclipse rate of current FO-29 (Fuji-3) is about 30%, the power supply of the relay with the battery cannot serve a period of the eclipse. And the malfunction occurs in the part of the electricity control system. The malfunction to become the problem in use in particular is UVC which is an automatic function about the electricity management. When the satellite is in the eclipse, and the light of the sun is not the solar battery, the transmitter becomes OFF by UVC. It is designed afterwards so that an analog system transmitter becomes ON automatically when the terminal voltages of the battery exceed the rated value after the light of the sun is the solar battery. However, it is likely that malfunction occurs for this function, and the terminal voltage cannot turn on a transmitter even if it exceed the rated value unless we send a command from the ground. The eclipse rate of FO-29 (Fuji-3) will rise in future and rises to 34% in March 2008 and comes over a peak of the eclipse rate. When it goes over this peak, the eclipse rates decrease slowly, and it is 20% in August 2009, and it is all sunshine (the period when the sun continues being) in February 2010. ISS and STS -118 visual pass

Hi all, I have just had the great pleasure over here in the UK (Wales to be exact ) of a visual of the ISS closely followed by Space shuttle STS-118. Conditions were perfect and I cannot recall seeing the ISS so bright, also to make it really significant to those living in Wales I know that astronaut Dr.Daffyd Rhys Williams ( David as he is known) intended to take up with him a flag of Wales. Although he is Canadian of course, he paid a visit to Wales to trace his roots and carry out other business. SATPC32 DDE export to a logging program?

Hi, I was wondering if anyone has developed a way to use the DDE output from SATPC32 for real time input to a logging program, such as DXKeeper? Since SATPC32 is THE tracking program, you pretty much need to go that direction since it has control of the radios. Mostly an idle thought now, but more relevant when the new P3E birds are launched. Hi Chris I have had a 15 mile one way , 2 gHz, 3 foot, 100 mw, RF link for my ISP for 7 years now, and it has never given me a problem. A 50 foot run of LMR 400 is used here. My grid dish has 23 dbi gain. A Cisco model 350 is in my computer. I will assume for the moment my experiences somehow fit your situation and might be useful to you. I use a telescoping Radio Shack mast to mount a vertically polarized Grid dish. The mast is mounted on a lower roof level , using an upper roof peak bracket to stabilize the mast. It is a good solid mounting. The antenna is looking down a water shed that falls away at 3 foot per mile. That clear all the trees. Trees are a real bad attn on 2.4 gHz The grid dish is mounted vertically ( dish rods in the vertical plane) because the ISP uses that polarization. If I were to consider using two dishes I would test two dishes side by side. Diversity reception ( using two receivers ) of two stacked vertically might cancel some signal when mama nature does her tricks. Where as what ever trick mama nature has in store should remain the same for two antennas side by side. The effective aperture of a dish is the physical size of the dish so the distance between is not as critical. Where as the above and below mounting has to do with how mama moves the signal vertically over time. Scott, Thanks for the information. The antennas would be stacked on the same mast and would be easy to put the edges next to each other.I was not aware of interferometer and its effects. 2 ghz antenna question

Hello, I know this is off subject, I am looking for ideas on stacking 2 antennas. I am doing a 25 mile WiFi link on 2 GHz using 1 3 foot grid dish with horizontal polarity. I have a power divider and a second dish that I want to mount directly above the first antenna. Is the vertical spacing critical? Is there any advantage over close spacing, ie. increase gain or wide spacing to give better path fade protection. Thanks for your time. Chris N6ICW

The AA2TX Parasitic Lindeblad

Hi Guys, Interesting thread I built a Parasitic Lindenblad using Tony's excellent design. I made some modifications to the hub and arms to suit materials easily available in England. The elements were measued very carefully and exactly to Tony's dimensions. The parasitic version was much easier to build than the traditional version with 4 folded dipoles. Results - Used on receive with a pre-amp (The G0MRF low noise design built from a kit) LO-19 CW beacon at about 700mW was solid copy right down to the horizon. For a more extreme test I tried one of the 80mW cubesats. I could copy the CW beacon at 3200km range and 1 degree elevation. If you build one I am sure you will be pleased with the results. It's very neat looking and scored 10 out of 10 on the XYL test. 73 John G7HIA

Scott, 1. I would recommend using standard connectors and teeing them rather than soldering to a lug. You'll find that if you want to move the array for portable work, it will be easier to set up and take down. 2. Although I'm no expert, I wouldn't think you'd even need the same length feedline, although it couldn't hurt. 3. LB gives the dimensions in inches, but try converting them to millimeters. Just multiply by 25.4 millimeters to the inch. I'd round to the nearest 1/2 mm and cut as close as possible. Then, that ".49 inches" dimension becomes 12.5 mm. 4. You could always use duct tape... they use it on the shuttle and ISS! BTW, the 70cm version calls for #12 AWG wire, not #14. 73 de N8AU, Jim in Raymore, MO Light travels faster than sound... The 70cm antenna is using #14 galvanized wire, and I can't think of anything small enough to hold them in place well. I found that the 3/16 rod for the 2m moxon will work great with 1/4" nylon tubing. Thanks for any feedback - I'll probably have more questions.. I'm sitting here with a half-made 70cm turnstyle, and am about to start on the 2m version. Whew - I'm beginning to think that a $1000 investment in rotators and antennae isn't such a bad idea after all! Scott Wilson NW2S

Antenna Wind Load calculations

Work is progressing on my new satellite antenna set up. I have a couple of questions for the group. 1. What would be the effective wind area for a 2 foot by 3 foot grid (BBQ) dish? 2. I have a WIMO helix for L Band (Model 23-2). The info says a wind load of 200 Newtons. Does anyone know under what conditions it is 200 Newtons so I could calculate the area of it? Yo, people!!! You're all missing out on history! In the past, when AO7 has gone out of eclipse, the timer has functioned almost exactly to specs. If the timer has performed as designed over the past 36 years, why should it suddenly fail? AO-7 report.

A study of the AO-7 eclipse charts for the last 3 years shows a progression toward non-elipse orbits in late 2007 - 2008. In effect, this means that AO-7 in all probability will not change mode unless anything untoward happens. It also means that we appear to have a permanent mode-B LEO linear transponder for the forseeable future ... providing operators follow the recommended operating proceedure. Please *do* decrease your power as the satellite approaches TCA to avaoid FM'ing. This not only helps the satellite, it helps the other operators in the passband. Don't be fooled by propagation anomolies. The mode-B transponder is working well and will continue to do so providing the alligators go and play somewhere else. Under normal circumstances you do NOT !! need a lot of power. Please use only the necessary to maintain adequate communications. If you can't copy people adequately, you should improve your receiving capabilities rather than increasing your uplink power ... remember, aluminium is cheap and it's a lot more user friendly to everyone concerned .... with perhaps the exception of your neighbours. For all intents and purposes, AO-7 is a QRP satellite. Please treat it as such. 73 John. <la2qaa(a)amsat.org>

ARRL dual moxon turnstyle project questions

I'm working on building the ARRL dual moxon antennas, but the article isn't very detailed where I'd like it to be and a little over detailed in some places I wish it weren't. If you want to look, this is the URL (http://www.arrl.org/members-only/tis/info/pdf/0108038.pdf) 1. What are acceptable ways to terminate the paralled 75 ohm matching sections? I'm thinking now I'll just terminate them to a couple of ring terminals attached to the mast rather than terminating each one with a bnc and teeing them. 2. How do I feed the 70cm and 2m with the same feedline? should I just tee a 50 ohm line to two equal length 50 ohm sections? 3. This is more of a comment... I'm wagering the uhf version doesn't work at all... measurements are given to the hundreth of an inch - and then you solder a big ring lug to the end of it! 4. Are there any other good techniques for setting the distance between the reflector and driver besides heat shrink? GS-232B with Nova

Has anyone used the GS-232B/G-5500 combo with Nova? Are there any issues, pitfalls, problems or work-arounds with the set-up and calibration in Nova? I am going to be setting-up one of these systems tomorrow. Others have tried and have not been able to properly calibrate and operate the rotor to track satellites. I do not know what their exact problems are but I will see for myself tomorrow. Also, this set-up will be using a laptop and a USB-to-serial converter. Portable Operations from FM18uo

I'll be headed to FM18 for the weekend and I threw my FT-51R, my arrow antenna, and my tripod in the trunk of the car. I would like to post a set of questions for the AMSAT BoD candidates, as Stefan (VE4NSA) did almost exactly a year ago. It will certainly help me select the best candidates. Since I don't think you need to go so far as to do a YouTube video, please help us understand your positions and the value you would bring (or have brought) to AMSAT. License Renewal

Hello All, I ran into an old friend this morning. He is someone I Elmered into his general class a few years back. He has been inactive for some time but gave me the indication he'd like to get back on the air. One problem.... He has let his license expire. I have personally been away from the VE Program for a long time as well and I don't know, considering all the recent changes, if there is a "grace period" or must he retest? Thanks for any info and please excuse the use of the BB when it's not fully satellite related. This young man was interested in sats when he first was licensed so perhaps if we can get him back we'll gain a new AMSAT member. I can hope can't I? He did in fact, work RS-10 from my station and still talks about it to this day!! 73 Frank, K0BLT

AO-51 in L/S mode

AO-51 is currently in mode L/S. Due to a commnd station error it is in L (USB) / S (FM) mode for today. Nevertheless Ib, OZ1MY determined the correct modulation scheme and had a QSO with Willi, OE6AG this afternoon. Probably a first for this mode. hello george- I have 9600 capable radio (FT8800) connected to sound card via buxcomm interface but I dont know if I can use the same interface with the isolation transformers on 9600. Currently wired for 1200. Waiting to hear from buxcomm about 9600 use. Thanks to mineo for posting the telemetry. I like the graphical flow chart version you used the first time. Its refreshing to see some technical information about echo. This could be a low-bandwidth back channel that AMSATers worldwide could join into and chat in real time about satellites, during passes get feedback, or people could come to get assistance when they are having problems. I know the IRC channels are being used for the same reason for other projects, why not AMSAT? If you already have an IRC client come join us at irc.freenode.net and join channel #amsat. Drew, It is my understanding from recent correspondance with W3GEY/VK3GEY Jan King ... (Jan 'built' AO-7) ... and earlier correspondence with N1JEZ Mike Seguin (AO-7 control operator) when I first posted the mail re: the timer last year .... that the timer is completely random when the satellite comes out of eclipse and since there are no imminent occurances of eclipse as far as I can see, I assume the mode will not change unless anything 'ontoward' occurs to upset the electronics. High power *can* affect how the control systems behave ... (obviously, I'm not going to mention the command parameters or the power required). If my assumption is wrong, I stand corrected. In either case, listening to the regular operators will confirm the mode. The mode changes can be viewed at ... <http://www.planetemily.com/ao7/stats2.php> The predected eclipse chart at ... <http://www.planetemily.com/ao7/Eclipse.php> Perhaps other operators will obtain different conclusions from the above predictions. Fred: Let me join the chorus of well-wishers for your group's project. In my opinion, it is an excellent one to undertake: the triple-cubesat design seems just about right in terms of volume; and by documenting and open-sourcing your work, you will provide an fine basis for others who might want follow in your footsteps. I think especially of future collaborations between amateurs and university programs, where the amateurs provide the comms expertise, and the university funds a research project, at whose end the comms. are used for amateurs, much like Delfi C3. I note also the Sat on a PCB concept at http://wiki.amsat.dk/index.php I hope in contrast that your project will seriously consider a linear transponder. I think that the clever social engineering of the VO-52 folks has proven that a linear transponder can successfully be shared around the globe by FM users where necessary and SSB/CW users in places where this is a more sensible use of the device. 73, Bruce VE9QRP

Hello folks, I would like to request copies of any telemetry recordings of Sputnik 12/13, I know it was killed by radiation while flying over the South Atlantic Anomaly during a Solar storm. I am seeking any telemetry recordings of this spacecrafts CW signal on HF 29 MHz. When the spacecraft was alive, I wrote a telemetry decoder for Russian Sputniks. I only managed to make 2 small datasets using the CWget and my RSdashboard before it went and got itself cooked. This is a request for historical reasons, the data and software I want to put online at QSL.net. Measuring the ADC output of a sound card

Hi, I am fiddling with a new sound card, and am wondering if there is a bit of _Windows_ software which will read the output of a standard audio device, and present the data directly? You can almost do this by looking at an FFT display, and looking for clipping, but I was looking for a more direct, and quantifiable reading. Programs using AE4JY's DLL core will tell you when you are overdriving it, but that is pass/fail. 73s, Alan WA4SCA
