PCSAT (W3ADO-1) is operational on all passes when it is in the mid-day sun. That means if there are any passes within a few hours of your local noon, then it is probably useable for a few packets. You can see its downlink on the http://pcsat.aprs.org web page at any time. Checking there, I see many many users and packets over the last 24 hours... Enjoy!. Sat prediction + Windows Vista

For a lot of my satellite time I have used NOVA for predicting sat passes on a WinXP laptop in my vehicle. I have been required by work to go to a Windows Vista computer and have been unable to get Vista and Nova to work together. What are people running on Windows Vista for prediction without an internet connection (so I can not use AMSAT's predict website). Mike Kb8zgl

August AO-51 schedule is up!

I posted the new schedule for August late last night. This time around we had _seven_ specific requests and filled all of them. There are several grid expeditions and cruises that will be on AO-51 in August, both in North America and Europe, that requested "normal" V/U repeater mode. We've also scheduled some L/U and L/S time for the adventurous. Eclipses are getting shorter this month, so expect to see the downlink power move up in response. To the group, For those complaining of little satellite activity. On Monday the 30-07-07 ... on AO-7 there were 12 different prefixes logged including several Stateside - Europe contacts. The prefixes were ... (in random order) ... K9, G1, DM, F3, EA, LA, UA0, RA3, GJ, I6, HA, OH. The Stateside stations were ... K3SZH, N5AFV, K9QHO, K9CIS, K9HF, W7AIT, WA6KYR. Hi All, I'm being "innundated" ... (well, 2 actually) ... with corrections to my mis-spelt 'Jimmie' (as in Jimi Hendrix) in regard to my earlier AO-7 post. I humbly apologise for my error and have reprogrammed my single remaining active braincell with the correct spelling. I've also been asked twice in the last 20 minutes for the mode of AO-7 at the time. Hi All, I'm going to try some QSO's on AO-51 at EN67 (the northern tip of Michigan's Upper Peninsula) on 31 July around 1320 and 1458 UTC. Hello Group, Regarding the AO-7 Resource Page log. I was asked what I meant by my earlier remark of "sloppy". Please allow me to explain. I think we all agree that for 'data' to be valid and meaningful it has to be 'entered' correctly. If not, the results will give a false picture. An example: 30th-July-07 at 09:05 on orbit 49661 station ****** worked station ****** AO-7 on orbit 49661 at 09:05 was in fact over Antarctica so neither ****** nor ****** were in the footprint of AO-7. Therefore, the actual QSO would be valid but the timing would be way off ... thereby giving a false overall impression. It is not expected that one logs the 'exact' time of each contact since it is possible to work several stations on the same pass ... each to be entered on the same line ... but it would be advantagous if stations would log their contacts with the correct data. It's perfectly OK to log the contacts 'later' if you're busy ... but please do enter the data correctly. If you make a mistake, you can edit your entry by clicking on the hourglass to edit it. RS-22 beacon is very strong

Dear all, Encouraged by the RS-15 results earlier today I also wanted to try to receive RS-22. I downloaded the lastest keps and tuned a few KHz above 435.352 MHz. Already a few seconds before AOS I could hear the FM data signal. Signals became very strong - stronger as the AO51 435.3MHz downlink. During the middle of the pass I switched to 145.818 but did not hear anything. At the time NOVA calculated max elevation, frequency was exactly 435.352MHz (in line with web documentation). Almost the entire pass an FM data signal was present (documentation says this is typically done while flying in range of Russian command). Only at the end of the pass the beacon switched to CW telemetry, but at a much lower rate as earlier samples I found on the internet. Distance between each packet (packet lengths varied from 5..7 seconds in length) was quite large (13 seconds). Software Engineer Needed The US Air Force Academy has an opening for a software engineer to work on satellite and ground station software. This is an unofficial announcement of this opening. A formal announcement should be out shortly. I’ve just retired from 10 years in this position and can say it is without question the most fun I’ve had in 40 years in the software and space business. This is a full time contract position in the Space Systems Research Center and is located in Colorado Springs, Colorado. This engineer is involved in every aspect of satellite design and construction including working with students, writing software, testing, launch campaigns and on orbit operations. The USAFA small satellite program is one of the most successful in the world having launched and operated three satellites (one more was lost to a launch failure). Falconsat-3 is currently on orbit and undergoing commissioning. Two more of the Falconsat series are under design and construction. This position also works with the sounding rocket program on the avionics and telemetry packages and with the Eyassat classroom satellite (www.eyassat.com) in the Astronautics Department. Existing systems include ANSI-C, Visual Basic, and real time operating systems. Future work may include embedded Linux, Visual C, Java, and LabView. Experience in all these areas is not required but the ability to learn quickly is essential. This is an opportunity to work in the exciting small satellite field and with motivated and dynamic faculty and students. And Colorado Springs is on the doorstep of the wonderful recreation opportunities of the Rocky Mountain region. Peter Gülzow, DB2OS reports on the DL Web site that JAMSAT (Japan) has made a generation donation of 1,000,000JPY (7500.00 euro) in support of the AMSAT P3-E satellite project. He went on to say that Mikio Mouri, president of JAMSAT is working on the structure of a command station for P3-E in Japan. There is close cooperation with the University for communications technology and the radio observatory in Sugadaira/Nagano to re-equip their 4m parabolic antenna for command use with P3-E in the 23cm and 13cm-Band. After being off the satellites for a year or more due to the lack of a 70cm antenna, I finally put up a Cushcraft A270-10S dualband yagi. It doens't receive quite as well as the 719B I used to have, but did make 2 QSOs tonight on AO51 with it. It is great to be back, and AO51 sounds as good as ever! IC-821H TX problem on 70cm

Wondering if anyone else has experienced this: My IC-821H will just "quit" transmitting on 70cm. The PTT is still engaged in the radio (at least the band LED is red) but no RF comes out. This happens in either CW or SSB. The length of time it takes to quit varies, sometimes a couple of seconds, sometimes a minute, but it always happens eventually. If I let it set for several seconds, it always comes back, but not necessarily the first time I try. Needless to say, this puts a bit of a crimp in operations. Question on diode symbole designation

Hi All, After many attemps to trouble shoot why a new circuit was not functioning to me I found a diode IN4006 made by ITT wrongly marked reversed i.e. with the white ring printed to the anode side |! AO-51 SSB/FM mode

greetings Thanks for trying the AO-51 SSB/FM mode. It was interesting. I made a few contacts. I noted the audio level was a bit low so it was tough to hear myself on the downlink but I quickly turned up the volume and withstood the load static noise. I was wearing headphones. It was interesting to note that matched uplink and downlink modes are clearly heard on the various satellites. Is it that the narrow band SSB doesnt fully drive the transmitter deviation? Might sound stupid but I'm curious. Thanks to VE3NPC, KD8CAO,N5ZNL,W2NBJ, and KC8ZFN for the brief contacts. 73, pat

While demonstrating satellite communications to a Radio Amateur visitor at the Canada Sci and Tech Museum in Ottawa, VE3JW made 3 contacts in the new mode while trimming Doppler manually on the USB uplink. A little tricky at first... but great to hear on the same pass Northern Alberta (Edmonton), USA and Mexico. Did anyone copy any AO-51 telemetry on the most recent (00:19z 25JUL07) North American pass? At max elevation, the received signal strength for the voice downlink was S7 at my location (FM29), but on 435.150 beacon frequency, zip,nada, nothing. Any thoughts? 73, John AA2BN

AO-51 SSB/FM ops

Hi, Worked the first two passes today from EM65. Nobody on the first, so it was a good chance to net the uplink frequency. There were 4-5 people on the second pass. A few observations. It is very obvious who has computer control of the radio. Intelligibility is as with any of the passband birds, except on AO-51 you fall completely out of the passband quickly, rather than just slide up it, and of course you can't compensate on the downlink. Folks using manual frequency control had little luck with a QSO. Those with SATPC32 or equivalent could work similar to the FM/FM mode. In this mode the RX is relatively sensitive, but I did need a beam to get a good uplink, though the output was only 1-2 watts. In FM mode, I frequently work a pass using my Arrow J-Pole with 5-10 watts due to operator error, but that was obviously not enough with SSB uplink except around TCA. So come on out and join the fun. Last time, I recall several passes where both voice and CW QSOs were accomplished at the same time. Alan WA4SCA

W3PM on AO-51

Hello! I got the idea to try out my portable setup this sunday and took out my VX-5 with handheld Arrow antenna. I worked a couple of EU stations and after that to my surprise i heard W3PM/MM who came back to me on first call. He was operating from Queen mary 2 http://sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/RMS_Queen_Mary_2 (if i heard right,,) and was located in HN58. Pretty cool contact between two portable stations and it shows the performance of the satellite. (With this small tiny equipment it is possible to work a lot on satellite.) 73 Hakan SM7WSJ

WD9EWK demonstration on 2 AO-51 passes tonight

Hi! Thanks to all the stations who heard WD9EWK on AO-51 during two passes this evening (0152-0203 and 0329-0343 UTC). I was doing another presentation/demonstration for the ThunderBird Amateur Radio Club (W7TBC) at their monthly meeting, a follow-up to a presentation/demonstration I gave in March. This time, we were trying to get club members set up to make their first satellite contacts. We had success on that front tonight, for a couple of members. We were at the Thunderbird School of Global Management campus in Glendale, a west-side suburb of Phoenix, in grid DM33vo: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=33.6219+n+112.1829+w&ie=UT… At the club's June meeting, kits for a WA5VJB "Cheap Yagi" for the FM satellites were distributed (2 elements on 2m, 5 elements on 70cm, plus the 2m/70cm "duplexer" or band splitter). I think I counted 4 of them at tonight's meeting, plus a few other club members had HTs with telescoping-whip antennas ready to give it a try tonight. The 0152-0203 UTC pass was a demonstration where the members tested their gear on a low (15-degree) pass. I made 7 contacts with stations in Florida, Michigan, Mississippi, Arizona, Minnesota, and central Mexico during that pass. Between the two passes, the club had their normal meeting and I had a question-and-answer session along with time to verify radio setups for the later - and better (45 degrees maximum elevation to the west) - pass. The later pass had a fair amount of activity. Two of the club members made satellite contacts on that pass. Jeff W0NWA worked Bernardo 6I2HWB in southern Baja California (DL44), and Bob K7UNL worked me (a real "DX" contact, separated by 20 feet or roughly 6m) followed by Jeff K7WIN in southeastern Arizona (DM41). I ended up with 8 QSOs on the later pass with stations in California, Arizona, Mexico and Canada. A couple of members attempted to make contacts without success, and others just listened to the pass. Despite the heat - for the 0329 UTC pass, 2029 local time and the sun setting about 30 to 45 minutes earlier, it was still 105F/41C outside with a bit of humidity. We had a great time, and for a couple of the club members they now have satellite contacts for their logs. We may do another of these hands-on demonstrations in a few months, when it is not so hot outside. I let the club officers know I would be happy to do this again with them at some later date. Coax for UHF to Microwaves

Gents: I happened upon a chance, at a very small (but fun!) hamfest on Sunday to get my hands on some LMR 600 coax, which I'd hoped to use at 2m/70cm. Turns out it was too short for my 110' tower (building at base). In followup, I have a chance of some 1 1/4 Andrew heliax, or some 7/8 andrew heliax. I'd hoped to run one line for 2m (dedicated) an another to be switched among 220, 432, 900, 1296, 2304, and 3456. I'm seeking <1db loss at 2m and < 3db on the other bands. The Andrew datasheet says 3.3GHz is the max frequency for the 1 1/8, which I'm really tempted to buy based on price and the expensive acccessories that come with it. BUT, if I take the mfr data literally, it won't work on 3456. Question: Does anybody have any idea whether or not the 1 1/8 can be "pushed" to 3456? Tower mast question

Howdy all, I am preparing to set up a satellite station with M2 2MCP22 and 436CP42UG antenna's. The wind loads are... 2MCP22 2.5 sq. ft. 436CP42UG 2.0 sq. ft. I have a Glen Martin RT-424 (with thrust bearing), 4.5' tall roof tower that is rated for 6 sq. ft. of load at 87mph. I will be mounting it on my deck as opposed to the roof. (My climbing days are over:-) My deck is approximately 12' off the ground on 6x6 posts and VERY sturdy. I will be using a Yaesu G-5500 rotor in a split configuration with the AZ rotor inside the tower and the EL rotor at the top of the mast. I also will be using a 8' fiberglass cross boom to mount the antenna's on. Now that all of the prerequisite specifications are listed, here is my question.... What should I use for a mast? It will have to be fairly long (15-20') since the turning radius for the antenna's are around 10' and I am worried about it being so long that it will bend or provide a fulcrum to damage the tower. Strange noise on AO-51 again

Hi all, On two passes this evening I and others heard the "strange" noise on the AO-51 transponder, when AO-51 was far to the North. It was the same on the fifth of July. Most probably it is someone trying DSTAR on the satellite. AO-51 is not made for that and has not been opened to DSTAR transmissions as far as I know. If you want to use DSTAR on satellites use AO-27 where the control stations say it is OK. The problem is that you are blocking the normal use of the transponder. 73 OZ1MY Ib

New VHF amplifier

Greetings from Patrick N2OEQ I just wanted to state.... BRAVO! on the new 87 percent efficient VHF amplifier design. Now maybe something similar could happen with converting solar panel power into amplifier output. If amsat remains with Batteries on Eagle, perhaps they could add one or two extra sets of batteries for redundancy and extended satellite life. Otherwise I would like to see batteries a thing of the past. I wonder what the efficiency of batteries are anyway. I'm still waiting for an update on the new ECHO power software. Low Cost Launchers

The following paragraph caught my eye in an article at http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/6901835.stm "The [United Kingdom] Ministry of Defence (MOD) has said it is exploring a dialogue with industry and others on developing a low-cost launcher for small satellites." Labjack u2 to steer g-5500 in SatPC32

Has anyone gotten this working?? Im using the Circuit suggested by DK1TB that looks to be hand drawn and is similar to the labjack u12 schematic. I set my rotor full scale voltages at 3.30v. At first I was not finding a file called ljackuw.dll when setting up my u3 in the rotoe setup boxes for satpc32. I figured out that this file actually belongs to the u12 driver files so I installed the u12 drivers too. after loading those drivers, I wasnt getting any error messages on startup but was unable to control the rotor manually (in the labjack u3 server program sprouted by satpc32. At the time also, the feedback numbers in the u3 server program was showing 1.7 something but not following the rotor box. I tried manually entering some numbers in there but it cuased a cascadeing crashing error message boxes that ran down my screen. I closed out everything and rebooted. I tried to restart satpc32 and now all i can manage to get is a divide by zero error in german on startup. Using the LJ control panel program that came with my u3, I can see when i set FIO4 and 5 to AIN (analog in) i can see the rotors output when i turn it by hand using the control box. I can also used digital outputs 0,1,2, and 3 to manually command the box to steer. My circuit is working but something on the software level is broken.... possibly with the drivers? Don, I just tried to download the latest Keps and found "NO" Keps to be download ed per NOVA program from Space-Track.org. In the past month I've seen a number of messages relating to Space-Track.org not having valid Keps or Keps available on the site. Since Space-Track.org is run by the government I can only imagine a normal snafu is happening and Space-Track.org has bigger fish to fry. It's just to bad that Space-Track.org cannot indicate the operations of their site on their home page - to eliminate our guessing as to where the Kep problem resides. OSCAR-11 REPORT 16 July 2007 I have now updated the telemetry archive on my website to include all the telemetry received in 2007. The news archive has also been updated. The URL is www.users.zetnet.co.uk/clivew During the period 15 June to 15 July 2007, no signals have been received from the satellite's 145.826 MHz. beacon. I have not received any reception reports. The satellite is currently subject to solar eclipses, which will continue until 20 August. The duration of the eclipses is now decreasing and will reach a time of 10 minutes, around 10 August. At that level the satellite may be able to sustain continuous operation, however it is not possible to predict when the satellite will switch ON. If there was failed attempt to switch ON just before 10 August, then it could be the end of August before the satellite resumed continuous transmissions. The battery can no longer power the satellite during the eclipse season. When the battery voltage decreases to a preset level, the watchdog timer resets, and the beacon is turned off for approximately 21 days. When the satellite restarts, eclipses could cause the beacon to switch OFF, after a short time, probably less than one orbit. This short transmission could occur any where over the world, and could be repeated at 20.7 day intervals. Owing to the lack of accurate timings, it is impossible to predict when and where the satellite will be heard during these short transmission periods. It is just possible that someone tuning around 145.826 MHz. may hear the satellite, by chance. The Beacon frequencies are - VHF 145.826 MHz. AFSK FM ASCII Telemetry UHF 435.025 MHz. OFF S-band 2401.5 MHz. OFF Listeners to OSCAR-11 may be interested in visiting my website. The current monthly bulletin contains further details of the satellite's status. If you need to know what OSCAR-11 should sound like, there is a short audio clip for you to hear. The website contains an archive of news & telemetry data. It also contains details about using a soundcard or hardware demodulators for data capture. There is software for capturing data, and decoding ASCII telemetry. Additional g-5500 mounting question

If anyone has pictures of a "correct" split AZ/EL setup for a g-5500 I would love to see some up close ones. Questions that have been raised: 1) I bought used, but believe I have the seperation kit. It has one piece that screws into the Az rotor to allow the mast pole to go into it and be secured. However, I do not have a similar piece for the El rotor to have screwed into it to sit above the Thrust bearing on the pole. Is there supposed to be two of these? I do have what appear to be a set of clamps, but I can not figure out how to attach it to the pole at the top. 2) What all should be included in the seperation kit, maybe I am missing a part, but can not find a good pic anywhere or a parts list. Source for L-Band Preamplifier and Bias Tee?

Hello, I am looking for a Low Noise Preamplifier for L Band and a Bias Tee. Down East Microwave seems to be closed for the summer. I was looking at one of their 1296 MHz Preamps and wonder if it could work outside the band, like at 1090 MHz. I got a 1569 MHz preamplifier for GOES but do not have a Bias Tee to try it. The ones I saw were either for up to 1 GHz, or for up to 40+ GHz ($$$). I got a WinRadio WR-LNA-1500 at Dayton but I did not get a chance to really try it. The WR-LNA-1500 managed to fry two of my receiver's front-ends then destroyed itself when I ran it off of vehicle power. This was before I realized what was going on. The US WinRadio Service Center is checking with Australia HQ to see if they fix that model. So I would rather not buy the Winradio Bias Tee just in case there are more problems. Are there any surplus places that sell Bias Tees? I can deal with SMA connectors. I tried searching for kits or construction articles for preamplifiers but only found some stuff overseas. Do I have to wait for DEM to reopen? 73 Eric

Bias Tees

Hello, all I have a small quantity of AVCOM DCP-66 Bias Tees (power inserters) that are rated from 25~1500MHz. Solid aluminum block with a feedthrough cap and ground post for DC. Most of them have female "F" connectors on the input and output, but I changed a few of them to female "TNC". These were surplus from an Earth Station I helped rebuild, and were used to send DC up the coax to commercial LNB's with a 950~1450MHz output. APRIL 2007 posting: I saw that you are (were) looking for a Nanaboshi connector. I found the Ohio distributor for their connectors and got what I needed in a onesy-twosey batch. I ended up ordering 2 male and 2 female so I could take the rotor out of the tower and test it at the ground. The connectors cost me about 12 bucks each. Keith - SHoudl be a Faq on AMSAT web page (or a page dedicated to az-elevation rotators) The conenctors are made by Nanaboshi. Here is Wayne Estes 2003 post / answer: Bernie K3BAZ located a PDF drawing of the various Nanaboshi connector configurations. The drawing helps identify the correct part numbers for two other useful connectors. So now I have enough confidence to order the following connectors: NJC-207-PF Inline cable connector, plug housing shell, female pins. This is the cable connector that plugs into the G-5500 motor housing. Use this to make a spare set of rotor cables for field day, or if you got a used motor with no cable connector. The group order is up to 50 connectors so far, which makes the price $7.15 each from the distributor. I will ask for $9 each to cover the cost of shipping to me, padded envelope, and postage to you. NJC-207-RM Panel-mount connector, receptacle housing shell, male pins. This is the connector on the G-5500 motor housing. Price is $3.19 each from the distributor. I will ask for $5 each to cover the cost of shipping to me, padded envelope, and postage to you. NJC-207-AdM Inline cable connector, receptacle housing shell, male pins. This could be used to "connectorize" old G-5400 motors with a pigtail cable that mates with G-5500 cables. The distributor doesn't have a price for this, but they say they could get a price in one day. It would probably cost about the same as the PF connector. Let me know if anybody wants the RM or AdM connectors. There is no need to tell me again how many PF connectors you want. I will hold off until at least Friday to place the order. All of these must be ordered from Japan with a 3+ week lead time. If anyone copied GO32 data on the 0130 pass July 11th (UTC) please let me know. I was not able to but had a very high noise level at the time and am testing our equipment for proper set-up. In general feedback of the health of the satellite in terms of consistent signal would be appreciated. It might be an issue on my end but I have copied very little data from GO-32 since its reported return to action, at either UF's station or the home QTH. CN69, CN79, CO70, and possibly CO60 7/14 - 7/19

Hi All, This is a reminder that I'll be working the FM sats AO-51, AO-27, and SO-50 from Saturday afternoon 7/19 to Thursday morning 7/19. 7/14 is a travel day which will have me mobile through CN79, CO70, and CN69. I'll be in CN69 for the majority of the time and possibly CO60 if we venture that way. On Thursday 7/19, we will travel back from CN69, to CO70 to CN79. After this point I'll be in Seattle which won't be rare at all. If you work me, I'll QSL if QSL'd. It'll be hard for me to log contacts from my experience in visiting CN70 awhile back. Hopefully I'll be able to record a few of the passes but I'm not counting on it. 73 de Pat --- KA9SCF. Amsat #35741
