In the past 4 Field Days we managed to pull of the seemingly impossible HT & Arrow contact from FN20 15 mi east of Philadelphia. Last year KC2TN worked a middle of the night pass with just his HT. Hi Paul, A second shot in the dark: I recall that a few years ago new SW was released that had to overcome delays in serial communication due to Windows XP (and 2000?). Basically you had to start the SW, do a 'write to radio', turn OFF radio, turn ON radio, and then the actual writing/reading starts. But: that was to overcome an "communication error", not "radio invalid". Nevertheless I wanted to mention this. Did you try with older SW versions or running on older PC's/OS's ? You could also try other SW, I used LINK7 in the past as well. Hi Kenneth, I tried all ways, TNC on and off etc etc, the comms starts ok but reports "The radio is invalid" every time? I hate programing up the radio via the front controls! Yaesu G5500 rotor parts

I've removed my G5500 AZ/EL rotor to replace the elevation pot (part no. Q9000408 - used for both the Az and El rotors). Got the part number from Yaesu tech support, then went to place an order and found out they are obsolete - no longer carried! So... anyone have a replacement part number / alternate source for the pots before I try working my way through the Yaesu voice mail system. Also, the elevation bearing retainer rings (S8000208) as out of stock - 4 to 6 weeks to get them from Japan. FYI - I've got some pictures of my last G5500 rotor repair in 2005 posted at: http://webpages.charter.net/k.swaggart/W7KKE/rotor/rotor.html The 2005 elevation repair / bearing replacement held up pretty good - just a bit of rust on the retainer ring and a couple of the bearings. 73, Ken, W7KKE

AO51 & Kids Day using a TS2000

All, During Kids Day AO51 will have the uplink at 145.880. With my TS2000 I work AO51 always using memory channels. So for Kids Day a new set needed to be programmed. If you have a TS2000 as well, you can use MCP2000 to read/write memory channels using your PC. The 28-30 MHz is rather arbitrary, as most rigs do not transmit out of the ham bands without some sort of modification. I am sure we will hear from the FlexRadio contingent, but I doubt there is any problem in general RX/TX coverage, unless the PA block is so limited. Certain the RX should not be a problem. I have to admit I am glad to see the amount of support for people trying to get me to keep things up and running here. However as I see it it's a chance to stream line the station into a portable set up, all be it FM only.. and work the birds in that manor. My very 1st love is VHF contesting.. and as much as I tried to pull off a semi-operable station that could pull double duty (sats as well) it just isn't possible here. There is nothing more frustrating than not being able to point your antennas in a certain direction due to a house in the way or put them up at a reasonable height above the houses ( Tower ) However.. Like I stated before being QRV on the sats does not mean I must have the latest and greatest. I can easily pull it off with an arrow/HT or mobile radio.. and in addition its portable!! In addition as far as the VHF terrestrial operations go.. I will actively look for a group/club that can fill this portion of my operating likes. I will also add its not about winning or loosing with the home owner's assn.. I can win that with 1, 4 minute phone call.. it is however a matter of not being able to enjoy what I had built to its optimal possibilities.. and in my mind.. that is a waste of my hard earned dollar. For fractions of what I put into the previous station I can have a very capable station that I can take with me anywhere.. and operate. I do thank all of you for your good intentions and suggestions .. but this is the direction I want to go to for now. Again Thank You all :-) N2JDQ Steven J. DownEast Microwave has provisions for Changing the LO Crystals by using a simple switch in their Transverters I did this in their 70cm transverter using a 28mhz IF Mike KA2AEV In a message dated 6/12/2007 3:17:20 P.M. Full band transverters for satellite operations?

With the advent of rigs like the FLEX-5000, features are becoming available which exist in no traditional rig. However, for operation on VHF, UHF, and microwave frequencies, you are obviously going to need a transverter. Using a 28-30 MHz IF, you can cover 2 meters with 2 LO crystals. However, once you get to 70 cm, it would take 15 crystals to do this. Now admittedly, you wouldn't necessarily want to cover the entire band, as an FT-847, TS-2000, etc do. But you would want more flexibility than just one or two 2 MHz segments for both space and terrestrial operations. More if you wanted to include basic FM repeaters. Given that there are no (?) transverters which have a 20-30 MHz IF width, has anyone seen a transverter with a tunable IF, instead of crystals? O.K. I have a Icom 820 and for field day I intend to try VO-52 with out computer controlled anything. I have Dos 6.22 , IT and a 386 notebook. Yagis for 2M and 70cm. Question should I adjust the transmit (70cm) or the receive (2 M ) for Doppler? I relize that either will work but this is a protocall question covering only the FD operation in June. I think the key to the HOA's power of restriction lies in the definition of "Premises". If the definition includes the land and the home, then they can govern what happens in the backyard. If the language eg. says no antennas on the premises, then nothing will be allowed on land or building. In most cases they can even tell you to mow your lawn if it's too long in terms of the docs !! Whe using a dual feed (L/S), be it a patch or a nestled helix feed. Would there be desensing or any other kind of interference on S band while transmitting on L band. Hello everyone, I have joined Amsat and this is my first post. I am looking for home brew transverters. I have a SDR 1k withthe internal 144 DEMI that gives me 28 IF out. There is no way I can afford to buy transverters from DEMI or Elecraft. I am on very limited funds (SS). I can afford to make PCB's and buy parts or have PCB's made. I looked at farcircuits and googled. I founf plenty of stuff for 5 GHz and up. I would like to build a 70cm first and then a 144 to use my SDR in my new adventure into the world of sat operation. AO-16 MIA?

Hi all, after reading the posts about AO-16 apparently going silent, I checked the data from the Delfi-C3 backup groundstation, which has been set up at Eindhoven University in the south of the Netherlands by Jeroen Vreeken, PE1RXQ, he did a great job automating the station using his own developed software. As a test, he let the station track AO-16 continuously for a couple of months since the beginning of this year, and a quick examination shows that telemetry stopped around the 22nd of May. (We both have not been able to manually track AO-16 and listen for a signal in order to make sure it's not a problem in the groundstation which could be since the rotor does not work 100%, but reading the other reports about AO-16 on the BB it seems that it has indeed stopped transmitting) On the following page you can find the telemetry files from the station at Eindhoven: http://esther.esrac.ele.tue.nl/ao16/ note that of all passes, flac (audio) files are available, as well as raw kiss files (.kss) and ascii files (.asc) We used AO-16 extensively as a nice test signal generator since it produces AX.25 1200 bit/s BPSK just like Delfi-C3 will do soon hopefully:) Hope the command ops can get this bird working again! Hello folks. I am going to use Satpc32 in the QRP settings. I am using "Vista". And when I add a line to the "Doppler.sqf. It won't Let me save the changes. Trying to put in the starting freqs for uplink/downlink so software will track. Anyone know how to save the change in "Vista". In "XP" it was simple, just clicked on save and the change was there. Space Shuttle Launch - Need some freqs.

Hello all. I will be leaving on Wednesday for the 14 hour drive to FL to watch the shuttle launch from the NASA causeway. I was wondering if anyone had some updated repeater info for the area. I am looking for either a repeater or simplex frequency that I might be able to use to listen to the launch audio with on my HT during the launch. I read somewhere online about a repeater or repeaters that broadcast the audio live but I cannot find the site again. Also any info on mission frequencies that are used would be helpful. I moved from there 10 yrs ago, but the Titusville repeater always had the Shuttle audio on it. I don't know anything about Vista, but if you're trying to edit Doppler.sqf while SatPC32 is running, I'd suggest editing it with Notepad (or whatever text editor Vista offers) instead, without SatPC32 running. Vista may be locking the file while it's in use by SatPC32.... Good Morning Patrick, I couldn't help but reply to this... I can't believe that we have astronauts that can't use a D700 and us regular folk that can. You could use the PMs to make life easier on the ISS. PM 1 could be setup for earth-space communications when the astronauts have time to talk with us Earth-bound people. Then you could have PM 2 setup for packet, PM 3 setup for crossband repeat, PM 4 setup for APRS digi, PM 5 setup for... That would completely negate the thought process of having to change the settings and frequencies each time. I have my D700 setup similarly so when I go to PM 1 the radio reverts to a specific channel on each side, turns the TNC on and into APRS mode, and selects all the proper settings in the menus. I set this up via the software many months ago and everything works great. I no longer have to continuously swap my settings when I get out of the vehicle because going to PM 2 does my "Out of Vehicle" settings. PM 3 is setup for crossband repeat so when I get out of the vehicle to go hike it is already setup to go to my local repeater and a simplex frequency and I'm ready to go. Hi miles- just a short response- I no longer wait to hear the astronauts calling CQ and realize the future operation will be vastly independant of the crew. Considering the almost exclusive use of simple digipeating packet for several years, I have been pushing for cross-band repeater operation to liven things up. Does the digital radio have crossband capability??? Incidentally, the radio I mentioned can be used to monitor both VHF and UHF simultaneously. Whatever you do, please consider mostly unattended operation aside from use by the crew. I would rather be talking to fellow "space Cadets" on earth than waiting months for nothing. Just checked the last pass of GO-32. Reminded me of the KO-23 days. Good strong 9600 baud signal. Lots of downlink strength. The BBS was open but I did not try a upload. My two cents worth: FM birds are only worth 1 contact per channel. Last year, I used them only if there was no worthwhile pass on a pass-band transponder bird available. The results at my club, K0GQ, had were that last year we made more satellite contacts than in the previous 4 years combined. We made the most on AO-7, followed by FO-29, ISS (it was in cross-band repeater mode), VO-52, and one contact on SO-50. We made several attempts on AO51 but, due to the congestion, it was impossible to make a QSO on either channel. AO-07 is a crap shoot for mode, and likely to suffer from too much uplink traffic for its severely weakened power system to handle. Please go easy on the old bird. SSB/CW can be a bit tricky, especially under the pressure of FD. But, that's what it's all about - operating under less than ideal conditions, and succeeding. Sounds like another option may be digital, i.e. digipeating through one of the digital birds. Hadn't tried that before... Greg KO6TH

I am considering using VO-52 for Field Day. Could anyone direct me to a site with operating information, not bragg tapes on this satellite. I found the Indian site but I could not find any real technical information. The AMSAT frequency guide mentions both Indain and Dutch transponders shows only one set of frequencies and no suggestion as to USB tX or RX does indicate U TX and V receive. A short report on PCSAT-1 ========================= Just have two good passes over Wellington, New Zealand at 20:35 and 22:20 Hrs, 2 June 2007, UTC. (Sunday morning, 8:35 am and 10:20 am local time) Nothing heard from PCSAT-1. 2 days ago, I heard three packets during that pass, but my TNC has not connected, so unable to determine if they came from PCSAT-1 or someone or something else on the same frequency at that time. Brief trip to CM86

I'll be in uncommon grid CM86 on Saturday (with a slight possibility of a pass on Sunday). CM86 consists of the western half of Santa Cruz, CA and ALOT of ocean. NOTE, given that the preferred AO-27 pass will be occuring during the Rochester Hamfest, please allow for that and please call me WITH YOUR STATE/PROVINCE as well as your grid square. Thus those at the hamfest unfamiliar with satellite or VHF/UHF operation can know how far our satellites reach. That pass (in UTC) is: AO-27 Sat 02Jun07 22:04:28 22:11:07 22:17:50 00:13:22 130 67 3 21.8 and barely reaches into Vermont. Given this and the hamfest, please minimize routine hellos to other 'regulars'. Bruce, I was not clear, my concern was just the opposite --- Their point was AO-51 is not a single channel FM satellite, but a dual channel satellite. That implies there would be no limit to the number of contacts you could make on AO-51, as there are no ARRL restrictions on dual channel birds. Hi Folks Its been about 2 years since I last ran our clubs field day satellite station. I use cw/ssb and it appears that AO 52 (hamsat) is the only one available on 2 M and 432. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Is there much activity on AO-52? I'm looking forward to working some of you. The call will be W4IY and we should be on all passes available to us in Fm18. Satellites and Packet - Need a few pointers

In trying to maximize my satellite fun, I have realized that I have not tried the packet mode yet. So I set up my station for rx/tx on aprs. and using findu.com was able to establish that all is working as far as the equipment goes. I can send and receive packets fb. So the past few days ( very casually ) I have tried to receive some packets from the sats.. and I have not even been able to come up with a BLURP of anything so far ! Upon further investigation I read somewhere that the sats use SSB packet ? How is this possible with the Doppler and such? Or is it even true? Any info would be great. PCSAT-1 in Full Sun, Recovery Possible

PCSAT-1 is entering the full sun in the next day or so... PCSAT-1 is fully recoverable *if* we can just find the right time (and place) to send the commands. For the past 6 years, we have always been able to fully recover PCSAT-1 during a full sun period (during the Fall, Winter and Spring) because of favorable sun angles on the -Z face. We have never been successful during the Summer full sun periods because the sun is in the Northern Hemisphere and our best solar panel points the other way. In fact, monitoring 145.825 we hear nothing from PCSAT-1 (W3ADO-1) (in the Northeren Hemisphere). HOWEVER, I just realized that we have never really made an all-out effort to try to revive PCSAT-1 in the Southern Hemisphere, or mid latitudes during the Summer. Where we commmand from can make all the difference since each latitude sees PCSAT-1 at a different orientation during this full sun period. We need to find the right one to get the 2 commands in for a full recovery. So, we are looking for stations not in the mid Northern Latitudes to *monitor* 145.825 MHz for packets from W3ADO-1 in other parts of the world. If you get any packets, let us know. You might be in the right place. The http://pcsat.aprs.org shows that none of the existing ground stations are hearing W3ADO-1 right now. But then most of our ground stations are in the Northern Hemisphere. We only get one week to recover PCSAT-1. But if we recover it, it usually last for a month. Using a scanner to hear the FM sats?

Due to some money issues, I had to sell all my sat gear including my beloved TS-2000X. I've been going through some of my old gear and rustled up a Radio shack VHF/UHF scanner that covers ham frequencies. Do you think it would be possible to hear the FM sats with it? I have a homebrew 11 element linearly polarized yagi and I can still track the sats via computer rotator control. I can make it where I have a short run of cable to the antennas since I don't have preamps anymore. I'm also wondering about using some 75ohm RG6 quad shield satellite TV cable for receiving. Would this be better or worse than 9913 with the scanner? Kind of grabbing at straws here but I'm wondering if anyone thinks it would work before I invest too much time into it. It will be powered by a homemade NiMH battery pack of 11 "high-current" sub-C cells in my left pants pocket which easily puts out 10 amps at 14V. SO-50 jumped 5 kHz up in downlink frequency

Hi all, I listened yesterday to SO-50 and it appeared to be 5 kHz higher in frequency than normal on the downlink - approximately. Tested it right now and got it confirmed. Did anybody else hear it ? The pass had AOS at 1840 UTC here in Copenhagen. I have heard this before - but it is a long time ago. 73 OZ1MY Ib

RAFT is de-orbiting within the next 12 hours or so. It will arrive much earlier than any prediction based on Keplarian Elements because they are always too old. Best bet is to start 20 minutes early and point your beam towards AOS and where it will get about 10 deg above the horizon and wait. Then manually follow the short 3 minutes along the track... - Who will get the last telemetry? - How hot will it get before telemetry dies? We need worldwide operators collecting telemetry packets if they want to capture the last packet. See the live temperature plot on the RAFT-RE_ENTRY WEB PAGE... http://www.ew.usna.edu/~bruninga/craft/save-raft.html We particularly need data from the southern hemisphere where the passes are in the sun and will show the highest temps... Tune in 145.825 1200 baud AX.25 packet. And even with a small antenna, on the two overhead passes per day, you should get at least one telemetry packet. They are every 10 seconds.. I know that when the Russian suits are used for EVA from the ISS they use the VHF-2 FM frequency 130.165 and they can be heard from England. So stand by, Russia, India, Africa and Europe for an eavesdropping opportunity: Following from NASA: "Commander Fyodor Yurchikhin and Flight Engineer Oleg Kotov are preparing for two spacewalks. The main objectives of the first Russian excursion on May 30 are to install orbital debris protection panels on the Zvezda service module, route cables associated with the Automated Transfer Vehicle navigation systems and replace experiments on the module's hull. .... Wednesday's spacewalk is scheduled to begin at 2:20 p.m. EDT (1820 UTC) and will last about six hours. NASA Television coverage of the spacewalk will begin at 1:30 p.m. (1730 UTC)" So if you check the new keps (orbital boost last Wednesday) I bet she will be orbiting over Russia from that time, so Eastern Europe, India and Africa will hear first and later that evening might be audible on VHF-2 130.165(Russian suits again)from the UK. Use your 2m beam and track the ISS. TIMES: 1820 +6h = 0020 utc. Heavens-above has ISS visible my QTH at 0038 utc 31 May. The H-frame is 3" diam. 12-foot long cross-boom with 12-foot long 1.5" riser masts with fiberglass tips. The elevation bracket weighs 70-lbs. Total weight is probably well over 100-lbs. and the actuator handles it easily. Lots of wind area in this 12x12x 21 foot mess. On my satellite setup I use a 6-foot aluminum cross-boom (2m KLM-22C; 70cm 435CP42) plus a 33-inch offset feed dish for 2.4 GHz. No problems with use of metal cross-boom with antennas mounted in the "X" configuration (and feedline tied tight to boom and cross-boom). I would eliminate the elevation part of the G5400 if you decide on an actuator. In fact, before I got my B5400 I was using an used actuator arm on my satellite antennas (2m&70cm x-yagis).
