RAFT in Packet-Voice mode

Henk, PA3GUO, reports that he has just -enabled- RAFT VOICE mode. Enabled, this means that any station may TURN ON voice mode over his country with a single CONNECT RAFT packet. The voice synthesizer will remain on for 90 seconds. Only the CONNECT packet is required of that station. After his connect packet brings up RAFT, then he can fore a disconnect so he can try an APRS MESSAGE to TALK. Once the VOICE synthesizer is on, then anyone can send a UI APRS formatted MESSAGE to the callsign of "TALK" and RAFT will speak it (if it decodes it)... RAFT is very weak and hard to hear except on HIGH overhead passes, even with beams. Please do NOT attempt to turn on RAFT or to send TALK messages if you cannot hear it. Or, one of the new power to voltage converters from Analog Devices. Monitoring the radar fence output or other High radar signals could be interesting. Or camera that can take pics on your command. - I can almost see the picture of your QTH on the wall of your office. AO-51 status

I've been interested attempting to work thru this satellite for several days beginning 1/31 without much luck. One each occasion I've not heard the beacon at all nor heard any other qso's. I've used the amsat path predictions and online tracking so I'm sure I'm listening at the correct times. I'm using a colinear vertical about 20' up at the QTH, so I think I've got enough antenna to at least hear the satellite. Does anyone here know it the software update is still in process? Is the satellite not in operation now? Bill KI6DJ

I am considering my next station upgrade to be mast mounted preamp(s). I prefer the NON R.F. switching type due to their general better performance/cost and leaving me the ability to run QRO is need be in the future. My only experience is using a preamp with a transverter where there are seperate RX and TX lines. Now I do fully understand that you cannot TX threw these devices. My radio DOES have the ability to send DC voltage threw the coax while recieving ( IC 820H ). Even tho the radio can do this, I just dont understand how it works or if I would still need to use a sequencer. And even at all that... how an ARR preamp ( example ) can pass any sort of RF. The only way I can see how it would work is if some sort of switch is inplace @ the antennas as well, the DC from the radio or sequencer switches the preamp IN place when RX'ing and OUT of place when TX'ing. Now if this is indeed the case.. and im going to assume it is.. where would I begin to look for a Coaxial Relay that can pass 1kw @ 432 / 144 mhz? Now I know your thinking HU? 1KW!!! This is not my intended power level for the sats.. dont worry.. its for ( in the future ) possibly trying some single or dual yagi EME. -Steve Raas N2JDQ FN20vg

Is your inverted-V cut for ten meters? If an inverted-V cut for the one of lower bands say 80 meters is used for ten meters with an antenna tuner. In actuality it forms a Vee Beam antenna pointing straight up beaming at the stars. This is common mistake many amateurs make that I have not seen covered in any antenna articles. Fred KF0AK

Hi, I have to chime in and also vote for the re-introduction of PL on AO-51. Whilst I agree with the sentiment about capture effect and just being better than the pirates, I also agree with the comments about battery power etc. To add another perspective to the mix, I am sure there are many that would find it hard to differentiate between legitimate and non-legitimate traffic. Being one of those people that can only speak English, and not Indonesian, Malaysian, Cantonese etc etc, it's a little hard to differentiate between real amateurs and pirates. Though I admit regular exchange of callsigns is the habit of amateurs, it can still be tough with Multiple stations. At least with PL, you can determine that there was real "intent" to be on the bird. My 2cents worth.... Regards Andrew VK8AH

I probabally should add the configuration I would like to have... TRANCIEVER-------->DCI FILTER------->Preamp----------->Antenna ( Recieve Configuration) Tranciever---------->Antenna (TX configuration) Ultimatally I would like to NOT transmit threw the DCI filter. I have found some coaxial relays.. and im thinking ( still unsure of this all ) that I would need a 4 port SPDT type relay? -Steve Raas N2JDQ

Russian speaking QRM on AO-51 Rev: 13642

Hello from Fairbanks Alaska, Towards the end of my local coverage the uplink was jammed up with some nice sounding Russian speaking ladies chatting away on a phone. Their input into the bird wasn't that hot but enough to turn on the downlink and keep it on. Chalk this e-mail up for another vote to reactivate the PL tone. Those of us running QRP into the bird work hard enough pointing the antenna and getting to a good contact point without having to consider QRM on top of everything. Wayne replies: During field day I've had success on AO-7 Mode A using a 10m inverted Vee with the apex 12 feet high. That's 3/8 wavelength high which is the best height for satellite reception. More gain near the horizon where the path is longest, but no nulls at high elevation. The inverted Vee seems to be fairly omnidirectional in the azimuth plane, compared to a flat dipole which has nulls at the ends. A horizontal full wave loop will give better reception at low elevations (where you need the most gain), but worse reception at high elevations. I've been meaning to put the Vee up at home. Bob, I guess the height of the horizontal loop works well for a NIV antenna (beaming high angles). I have thoughts of putting up a 10m J-Pole using a ten foot tower section as the base and extending with 1-Inch aluminum tubing for the required length (3/4 wavelength total). This will likely provide lower radiation angles (which is desirable for DX). The J-pole does not require a ground plane so hoping this will work well. A J-Pole works well using a flagpole as a stealth antenna - just use the top section length as required at the operating freq. Tyler, My experience with ARR preamps is with models not set up for coax line powering. If you are uncertain, you might check on this. How in the world is is even remotely possible that people hold a conversation on the bird knowing that there are 70 people ( probabally more like 170) using the bird for quick contacts? Ib: I'm completely agree with you and thanks for your warning. I feel very ashamed by the behaviour of this spanish users: taxi drivers, hunters, couriers..... as you have noted they are not licensed operators. We have to suffer them most of the time on 2m band, not only on satellite segment, but SSB and even EME segments. If you ask them gently to stop transmitting on the band you can receive bad words and threats. Despite the individual or even group complaints to our "FCC", the spanish administration seems to do nothing. At Madrid, we have even the "inhibitors" noise just in 2m and 70cm bands (sorry if the translation is not good, I mean those transmitters used by the security forces to jam wireless devices). I know, as QRP sat user (whip or arrow ant with a TH-D7 hanheld), that get the sat with such a low power and in competition with QRO stations under norma circunstances is a real challenge....., but struggling with these unlicensed jammers goes far beyond the QRP spirit. If PL tone could help to avoid these troubles, I please the AO-51 control team to activate it if is posible. I'm sure this suggestion will be wellcome by most of us. I share your frustration.. Often times I'm trying to work the XE stations early in the pass, and two USA stations ignore the DX and proceed to chat again - after chatting on the last pass.. Meanwhile, the DX is just about to lose the bird... I would suggest that the ragchewers and newbies spend more time on SO-50. It's under-utilized most of the time, and it's lower power transmitter will encourage those with marginal antennas and/or receive systems to optimize their equipment. Gee ! a problem on FM sats

After all these years and many post about the lack of operating protocol on the FM birds ...Here we go again. I got into this discussion about 15 years ago and nothing has changed and ain't likely too. FM satellites are what they are and about all anyone is going to be able to do about the situation is either join in or stop using them. I got pissed off again on 1-12-2007 when KB3MBO was trying to allow his 4 year old son to experience satellite operation and it was all I could do to make a contact with him. I ask for a break so he could work a couple stations and got no help. I have been pissed since and it usually takes me about a month to get over it. I'm still looking for Delaware, South Carolina and current QSLs from three other Eastern states for WAS. But this situation has become so notorious that i find that many satellite operators are reluctant to work an FM bird, especially AO-51. And more than twice i've missed one of the states i merely need a QSL card from (Indiana) because of these hello'ers. Also of interest is that N1XAU was heard on a pass today. N3UC - one of the AO-27 control stations - commented on 20 January during an AO-27 pass that the batteries were in good shape and the transmitter was working well, and he had extended the repeater time for 2 minutes during one eastern North American pass. It's possible that he extended the repeater time shifted the time a little earlier to allow more stations - especially those further south - a chance to work AO-27 while it is currently functional. Hmmmm, yesterday afternoon (Thursday PST), AO-27 sent its shut-off telemetry about the time i was expecting its start-up telemetry. At the time, i just chalked it up to operator error (and reset my PDA from my GPS, as there was a small error there). But perhaps there is some drift there. Joe, The ARRL bureau is only for DX cards. You can't send outgoing cards to domestic stations. Of course if you happen to work any DX on satellite the cards can go through ARRL. (DX is a bit scarce these days!). The AMSAT bureau was great when it was working, saves a lot of postage on domestic QSL'ing. I'm all for it and will volunteer to sort the 6 land cards. As info, the county-hunters and possibly other organized operations have their own bureau for domestic and DX cards. Some people have the "me, me, me" attitude, so they feel they're entitled. I don't mind hearing a SHORT QSO between ops. I've kept this in mind when I've worked the same station a few times, and have limited my comments to them to a sentence or two, so that others get a chance to get in. Worse yet, on many of the passes that I can hear/work, there is someone in the footprint who just whistles, causing QRM on the already-crowded satellite. And then there's the op who does nothing more than say "hello...hello...hello". Lastly there are also the ops who apparently aren't hearing the satellite and keep calling CQ, with stations answering them to no avail. I am currently not QRV on any of the satellites. Mainly an AZ rotor problem.... Holding my breath for P3E!!! I would be pleased to help in any way possible and would volunteer to be the 0..(zero) bureau sorter if that will be of any help. When we actually do get an HEO bird into orbit maybe we can expand this to include DX "helpers". Just a thought. Just worked HR9/N5AFV in EK66, on an island just off the north coast of Honduras. This is quite the warm welcome to working sat's thats for sure! I think he was experiencing some microphone difficulty, as after I worked him N9EAW attempted to work him and all that was sent after EAW's calls were short carriers, with a blip of audio. I hope he gets this fixxed.. as I know many many people would love to work him there. I cant wait for the HEO's! Working DX is soo much fun! As many of you know, the Beuro Service is no longer available. There was a single individual doing this for a while, whom now is not able to do so any longer. I have wrote to AMSAT and told them of my Idea on how to get the service back up and running again. Here are my ideas. Instead of one individual handling the entire USA, that the beuro be broken up into 10 segments, with the number in the amateur's call being the 'factor' as to where he would send his SASE's and others would send their cards to. This would make it a bit more manageable for volunteers, so as they are not swamped with hundreds of cards every week. All that we would need is 9 people willing to spend a small amount of time to handle the in/out bound service for a certain call area. I have volunteered myself for the 2nd call area. My question is this.. if there was a Beuro would you use it? And what are your thoughts on this? -Steve Raas N2JDQ FN20vg

Hello folks, great competition! FB ! Here I've NEW updates about the "longest distance" QSOs via AO-7. Actually, I've a few comments and I need your opinion in order to realise and make much better this list. Feel free to send me your comments, ideas, QSOs + QSL cards to my personal Email (sv1bsx(a)yahoo.gr). Now, my first comment is about this idea. I had a draft notice in my PC with "longest distance QSOs via AO-7". Just before 2-3 days, John LA2QAA wondered in our Sat-Forum (Eu-Amsat), if his QSO with AJ9K it was (or not) the "longest distance QSO". That was the begigning for me in order to realise and publish a list, so John's question it was the "trigger". (good-one John!) 2)ES1RF, Genna, he told me about inaccurate distance in a contact of list. He was probably right. So I need to check carefully all entries, that is too difficult. (Check please carefully your contact, before send it to me). 3)Today I received the Emails of i8CVS, Domenico. He send me also 2 nice QSL cards for QSOs via AO-6 & 7. So, as Domenico wrote and suggested in a way, it is necessary to have the QSL cards in order to confirm the record-list & QSOs. I agree 100%. I think nowadays that is very easy job. You can send me your scanned QSL card through an Email, as Domenico did it. Thus, the list will be much more accurate and valid. Very soon I will make a Web-page with this list and QSL cards. A mere example -under construction this moment- is here: http://sv1bsx.50webs.com/oscardx/odx.html 4)It will be more informative list, if including additional infos. I believe some "fields" like the Report, Mode, Smode are absolutely necessary. May be the Power-OUT as well. Another suggestion is about a small description of used antennas. 5) Someone asked me if is possible to create a "trophy", or award. OK, nowadays it is easy to design and make an Award. But I wondering: this ranking is not stable, we have active Satellites, so the record-list is impossible to stay unchanged for ever. Today PH7AT & Wb4LHD are shared the 1st place. If after 2, 3 months, two other operators achieve a bit longer-distance QSO than PH7AT & WB4LHD, what must to do? If I have printed the PH7AT & WB4LHD's Awards for the 1st place, the next Hams will also have on their Shacks another "1st-place" Award !!? Right ? 6) I suggest to replace the "longest distance QSO" with "ODX" (Oscar-DX) abbreviation (tks to ES1RF). 7) I have also suggestions for: I) A new "WORLD-RECORD ODX" record-list (definitely via HEO... where are you AO-40? ) II) Record-Lists for FO-29 and other Satellites. However I don't know if we need too many Lists for each one Satellite or is enough a single List for all LEOs... let me know. That's all folks ! GO-32 Frame Trace ... Is VA3HIP/VE3EMA OK?

Does anyone know the control operator for this station? It is exhibiting some behavior that I don't know if it is expected (normal) or not. I realize it is a "Gateway" station. When VA3HIP acquires GO-32 there is a constant stream of frame ack/nacks that essentially "bogs down" the BBS to the exclusion of other stations. The BBS is so busy .. it appears not to be able to send it it's periodic "Gurwin Techsat1B" message that usually comes out every 30 seconds or so. I noticed this behavior at the end of last year and soon after VA3HIP was off the air. Within the last week it is back on the air exhibiting the same behavior. I included a trace file where I cut/pasted blocks of messages from my "tnc" .. you can observe the long periods (several minutes) of activity .. and then finally, at the end of the trace, where VA3HIP experienced LOS .. you can see normal activity resume (I soon experienced LOS as well). AO-6 Distance record ?

Hi All, I wonder if 7134.5 km is a distance record for a QSO on AO-6 On 23 june 1975 at 21:44 UTC I got a QSO via OSCAR-6 with Ben, W2BXA in Colonia, New Jersey As we can see in QRZ.com W2BXA is actually about 92 years old Congratulations Ben ! ! The report I received from W2BXA for this two-way SSB contact was R5/S7 The distance from W2BXA in FN20UO and i8CVS in JN70ES is 7134.5 km Anybody managed anything further? RAFT PSK-31 is enabled

RAFT lives! Throught overnight sleepless efforts, RAFT was finally commanded into PSK-31 mode by the combined efforts of DK3WN, PA3GUO, and PE1ITR and others. The problem has been that the RAFT command receiver is deaf when the bus voltage is over 8.1 volts. But at night in the dark, it works OK. SO here is how to work RAFT PSK-31. (we have heard no signals yet, and do not know if the HF wire antenna got deployed. So we welcome MAX power on the 28.120 USB PSK-31 uplink. Listen with FM on 145.825 downlink. It is very weak and needs a beam. Someone in the footprint needs to bring up the PSK-31 transponder with their own TNC command on 145.825 uplink. Just send C RAFT. This connect request packet will activate the PSK-31 transponder for about 90 seconds. You will not get an ACK however. You may TX on 28.120 USB PSK-31 with max power throughout the pass until we find out if the HF RX is working. Oh, notice that the "C RAFT" probably will not work in the daytime since the BUS voltage is above 8.1V and so the command receier is deaf. But you are welcome to try. Good luck! Dave and all: I wonder what all of you were thinking? If a commercial communication satellite were channeled on one of our mw ham bands, then we would be booted off. C-band satellites used approx. 37-MHz wide channels with alternating linear polarity to afford more adjacent channel isolation. On most of the TVRO units one could manually adjust polarization angle for optimizing the signal. If you adjusted 90-degrees off then one often got a ghost of one of the adjacent channels. The feedhorns had a rotating probe with the motor on the backside of the feedhorn. Typically in the mid-1980's these TV sats cost over $100M before launch. Your not going to convince the satellite company to include ham radio in any manner. AS has been hashed out many times previous on this reflector the path loss to the Clarke Belt orbit is prohibitive. It looks like the commonly adopted block conversion for C-band transponders wouldn't land in our bands. There seems to be a delta for 2.2 GHz for the block conversion (e.g. 5.9 GHz up, 3.7 GHz down). We'd need more like a 4 GHz conversion to land in our S-band, given a 5.8 GHz uplink. I'm sure the filters aren't quite tuned to go below out of band, either. Redundant geostaionary birds?

Hi gang, I was reading an ESA press release about satellite radio experiments and didn't realise its emphasis on re-using redundant broadcast tv satellites until I read the bbc version of the story at: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/6301359.stm which explains that when the broadcast geostationary saetllites lose fuel for position control the tv guys lose interest in them, even though the transponders work fine. Then I fell to wondering: whether we in the amateur satellite service could not use both the up and down links on these redundant geostationary birds? I don't know the exaxct frequencies but there may be one out there that has frequencies we share (or at least the uplink). After all we have years of experience of chasing staellites which are not exactly where they should be in the sky and so the "wandering geostationary" satellite shouldn't be a worry. I think each transponder channel is 27 MHz wide?? I remember vaguely that there was a "pipe" on one of the birds from the UK to the USA which was used in amateur service about 15 years ago now (but I don' t remember very much else). If we could take over one channel on the transponder then immediately we would start looking at uplink equations, multiplex etc. and what about a mobile aprs service?! 90% of the world will tell you why it can't be done. N2JDQ Station Update

Well the time has finally arrived and the weather was perfect, I now have my 2 & 435 antennas outside, mounted, quad pod mounted, cables ran.. ect . Just in time for a cup of coffee and a fo-29 pass. For the 1st time I was able to find my ssb on the downlink.. took me a while to find it.. and by that time I only cq'd a few times with no replys. I will be on the next pass.. I just have to figure out how to store the doppler diff.. I hit a button and it threw me way outa whack.. took me another minute to find my downlink again. Im sure with some practice I'll figure it out. Thank you to every one whom answered my questions... with out your help I would have never been able to do this. AO-51 Work

On Saturday I loaded a new housekeeping task, written by WD0E, and began to test the added functions. Those tests will continue over the next number of days. The features include an improved WOD collection program, which will be helpful as we continue to collect WOD data during the shortening eclipse times. It also includes some new safety features to protect the satellite. We will run a test of one of these features in the very near future. I will send another message warning of the test when it is scheduled. It will cause the transmitters to shut off automatically. I will turn them back on during the next available pass. With the SQRX receiver being shut off and the eclipse times shorter I have been able to increase the power level to some degree. Taking advantage of the additional power available. I continue to monitor that each and every day and will increase the levels more as I can. For the time being the PBBS will remain down to users. Please do not attempt to access the PBBS. So after 8 minutes of operations and just prior to LOS, the Naval Academy turned off the digipeater and set the MYCALL to NODIGI as a way of letting users know the digipeater was off. This is probably the end of this PCSAT-1 operating period. Ground controllers will see if the NODIGI will hold. But eclipses still get longer and eventually PCSAT-1 will be back to resetting on every orbit and be practially useless except mid-day sunnyside passes for a lucky packet or two. The next full receovery period will be the second week in March. To investigate the date problem mentioned below, I would welcome some telemetry from differents parts of the world, at times when the orbits do not pass over the UK. These times are approximately from 10:00 to 16:00 and from 19:00 to 04:00 UTC. If you don't have a decoder, I can now accept short WAV files of good audio, duration up to 30 seconds. I would also like reports of reception around the times of expected beacon switch ON and OFF. No telemetry wanted, just when you listen, and whether you heard, or didn't hear the bird. Please e-mail to the address below. During the period 29 December 2006 to 23 January 2007, the satellite was heard from 08 to 18 January. Good steady signals have beeen heard on all passes, and excellent copy of the telemetry obtained. The on-board clock has maintained accurate time, over the reporting period, gaining 2.5 seconds. However the hour counter sometimes shows an error of of 10 hours, ie. in its most significent digit. The 'day of the week' counter operates reliably, zero representing Thursday. The date counter appears to be incrementing correctly, but the day of the month is not reset to one, at the end of each month. Possibly, it resets to 41, ie. the unused bit representing 40 permanently stuck at a one. On 17 January the date was shown as 51 December 2006. Further investigation is required to establish exactly how the date connter changes. If the satellite's watchdog timer continues to operate normally, the beacon should switch ON around 28/29 January 2007. The satellite is in full sunlight at the present time, and will remain in this state until mid-April 2007, when eclipses start again. I am indebted to Bob G4VRC and Dean AL7CR for their reports. Reports around the times of the expected beacon switch ON/OFF, are especially useful. Many thanks. The current status of the satellite, is that all the analogue telemetry channels, 0 to 59 are zero, ie they have failed. The status channels 60 to 67 were still working. The spacecraft computer and active attitude control system have switched OFF, ie. the satellite' attitude is controlled only by the passive gravity boom gradient, and the satellite is free to spin at any speed. When telemetry was last received it showed that one of the solar arrays had failed, and there was a large unexplained current drain on the main 14 volt bus. After 22 years in orbit the battery has undergone around 100,000 partial charge/discharge cycles, and observations suggest that it cannot power the satellite during eclipses, or sometimes during periods of poor solar attitude. The watchdog timer now operates on a 20 day cycle. The ON/OFF times have tended to be very consistent. The average of many observations show this to be 20.7 days, ie. 10.3 days ON followed by 10.4 days OFF. However, poor solar attitude may result may result in a low 14 volt line supply, which may cause the beacon to switch OFF prematurely, and reset the watchdog timer cycle. When this occurs, the beacon is OFF for 20.7 days. The Beacon frequencies are - VHF 145.826 MHz. AFSK FM ASCII Telemetry UHF 435.025 MHz. OFF S-band 2401.5 MHz. NASA astronauts Mike Lopez-Alegria and Suni Williams are scheduled to begin a 6.5-hour spacewalk from the station around 9 a.m. CST on Wednesday, Jan. 31. It will be the first of a record four spacewalks planned during the next month. Lopez-Alegria and Williams will conduct other spacewalks on Feb. 4, 8 and 22. The first three spacewalks will originate from the station's Quest airlock and the astronauts will use U.S. spacesuits. The rig was a FT-736 & omni super turn- stile antenna for 2 meters. Engineer Jorge Lassig, director of the Penhuesat Uncoma project informed amateurs that the satellite takes between 48 and 72 hours to charge its batteries, due to the inadequate position of the nosecone to which it is still attached in reference to the sun. Once the batteries are recovered, the satellite transmits during several orbits until they discharge again causing the onboard computer to set the system in safe mode, leaving just the oscillator on. But if ISS was a DXCC entity, there would be an "arms race" of top DXers trying to make contacts. The pileups wouldn't be much fun for the astronauts or most satellite enthusiasts. Cross-band contacts are NOT allowed for DXCC. So if the ISS ham station ever makes regular contacts with separate uplink and downlink bands (as proposed by WB4APR), that would automatically be excluded from the "regular" DXCC. Satellites and the LoTW

If you read my posts a few weeks ago about the ACLog and LoTW not being satellite friendly and you wanted to know more, read on. I've been working with Kathy Allison, KA1RWY, who is the ARRL Contest Assistant & LoTW Specialist. My biggest concern was that LoTW didn't support all the satellites. One of my contacts can't be put into the system because my conversation with AJ, AJ3U, was via the ISS using packet and apparently the ISS is not a satellite. The response I received from the ARRL on this was "At this time LoTW won't accept ISS as satellite. From what I was told, you have to put phone or CW and it will accept it." which I got from Kathy. That doesn't fly with me. I have asked her to contact the sysadmin for LoTW and that if the admin needs any help with squaring away the satellite portion of the system to please contact me and I'll be happy to help get all the satellites straight in the system. I'm still waiting to hear back from them. After LoTW is straight, I hope to work with the creators of ACLog to make that log more satellite friendly. G5500 / SatPC32 / Rotor control

Hello everyone, In interfacing the radio to the PC with sat pc32 it dawned on me that I need to have rotor control as well. I think initially I will manually aim the antennas, but soon I will want full pc control. I will have a serial & USB connection available for this and am looking for a fully featured interface that I can build in a kit form or from easily obtainable parts. What exactally 'fully featured' is, im unsure of.. but Im sure I'll want it. Trying tp keep cost down as well. Thanks Steve Raas N2JDQ FN20vg
