Dear friends, MCM Electronics currently has a sale on a WiFi base station for $18.95. See: http://www.mcminone.com/product.asp?catalog%5Fname=MCMProducts&product%5Fid… This is a very basic Linksys unit. But, at this price, it might make sense to buy a few, put them in your house as close to your neighbors as possible, and set them all to channel 1 (which overlaps the ham band at 2.4 GHz.) This may help encourage your neighbors to use other channels. When you want to operate on S-band, just turn them off. They may also be useful if you want to set up a very basic WIFi network and you don't care about any extra features. 73, Tony AA2TX

I ordered a new RX filter before taking the 847 apart, hence the delay getting back with my fix. What I found was several loose screws on a couple of the boards in the 847. In fact the only screws that were consistently tight were the one's that I had removed/replaced when installing the Symec wide IF mod 5 years ago, I didn't open the bottom of the radio up at that time, so I don't know how long they may have been loose. After I buttoned up , all is now well, full duplex is back on FM. And I have much better RX on Ao-7 SSB, thanks to the 2.0 SSB Inrad filter ! It's about time I installed the filter, my 847 is over 8 years old. So it appears the fix was a loose semi-grounded board, most notably the AF-CNTL unit board. Eagle's New Design

I have to say that I have been very critical of the Eagle development team with their plans for the bird. At the time I did not agree with their recommendations nor did I agree with their decisions. I WAS WRONG. While I am quite relieved with the new plan for Eagle, which includes a linear transponder for V/U and L/S along with the new digital "Advanced Communications Payload", there is no excuse for my previous words. Contrary to popular belief, the satellite builders and the Eagle team are not out to just build whatever they want but rather to build what will work. There is no way that they would spend the many hours it takes to build all the pieces and parts it takes to make a satellite to send up something that no one will use or that won't work. I don't know if EaglePedia has been updated with the latest and greatest information but I was very impressed with Bob McGwier's presentation on the latest configuration of Eagle. If you weren't able to attend the annual symposium then please keep an eye out on the website (amsat.org) for the latest and greatest information on the project. Take a look at the new information and then make sure you let everyone know that you support Eagle by going to http://www.amsat.org/amsat-new/eagle/#donating and donating. It is very important that we all pitch in and help fund this project so that construction can move forward. From my understanding, we raised quite a bit of money at the symposium but we need more. Help the amateur satellite community and join the President's Club and/or donate directly to the Eagle project. Post AMSAT Conf ideas

The AMSAT conference was very refreshing. When I listen to the speakers, it often inspires me to day dream of neat ideas just for fun. Here are a few that got me thinking: See the WEB page: http://www.ew.usna.edu/~bruninga/amsat-ideas.html 1) AMSAT $15 Student Receiver Kit. Rick Hambly proposed some kind of cheap kit for kids to build as student outreach. I suggested a simple up converter to upconvert 145.800 Space Station downlink to 462.5625 MHz for the FRS radios that the kids already have. I'm sure we could do this for really cheap since the kids already have the radio... A little device that wraps around the FRS antenna and has its own 19" antenna. See pictures on the WEB page above. 2) Golf Ball Fundraiser: A few years ago, there was a golf ball company willing to pay 100's of thousands to get a golf ball into space as an AD campaign. We all know the similar SWATCH project was soundly killed by the amateur community because it was in direct violation of the rules. But, such use of someone else's money to BUILD a satellite *can* be done if it is done within the rules. So here is my design challenge to the amateur commuunity for a golf ball 10m to 2m linear satellite transponder for MULTI-USER PSK-31. See: 3) The big-ear "S"band dish for local operations. I posted this before and it is simply using a 1/4th quadrant of an old "C" band TV dish as a nice gain antenna. In fact, save this for all future AMSAT EAGLE microwave links. These dishes are good to Ku band and using only 1/4th of them is much more manageable and easier to mount. And you only lose 12 dB from the 38 dB gain of a full sized one. Thats a nice 26 dB gain antenna that people are throwing away. Oh, and if you find a big dish that is intact, then you get four of these Quardrant antennas for one. And disassembling it into quadrants makes it easier to drag home anyway... Anyway, just some fun thoughts... de Wb4APR, Bob

QRT to BB

I used to look forward to receiving the BB digest daily. It would give me early news related to satellite activities, events coming up, satellite status and most importantly technical advice ranging from antennas to techniques. Lately it's turned into anything but satellite related stuff. Disagreement is fine, but it's become an obsession for too many respondents out there and is frankly taking too much bandwidth. At the end of the day, we either decide to continue or to move on. Remember, this is a hobby and it's supposed to be fun. I decided to move on. Right after this message was sent, I unsubscribed to the BB digest. By the way, I met Bob at Dayton while helping out at the booth this past spring. I also met Drew, Rick, Gould, Emily and Martha and many other active people in AMSAT and amateur satellites. I may not fully agree with what they are doing on a micro level. But on the macro level at least I know we have competent, though maybe not popular people making decisions based on facts and science. I feel they earned the right to continue to make those decisions based not on popularity of those decisions, but by their progress on the open projects. Whatever you think about Echo, and I rarely use it, it is the most versatile bird we have seen launched and a great step back into space for AMSAT-NA. Being able to put a multi-mode, multi-band instrument into the space of a microsat package, and have it perform nearly flawlessly almost immediately doesn't happen by luck or populist decisions. You do the science correctly, practice diligence in execution and things tend to work very well. The leadership team has a difficult task using very limited resources and time to accomplish what it takes professional engineers years to do with bigger budgets. In addition, any sat project has global impacts and is effected by global events. We sometimes get blinded by local concerns that prevent us from seeing the big picture. Personally, I wish I could do more to help AMSAT, but right now the best I can do is work the booth in Dayton in May. Anyway, 73 to all and hope to hear you on the sats. The part 15 rules for 2.4 GHz operation state that a maximum transmitter output of 1 watt with a 6 dbi omni antenna is legal. This is 4 watts eirp. With a directional antenna you must decrease your transmitter power 1 db below 1 watt for every 3 db antenna gain over 6 dbi. Confusing as this may seem, it means that you can have 250 milliwatts of transmitter output with a 24 dbi gain antenna. That is 18 db over the original 6 dbi which is 6 units of 3 db each. This means that the transmitter power must be reduced from 1 watt to 250 milliwatts (6db). This is an effective isotropic radiated power of 64 watts and is perfictly legal. Hello, Everyone, Business is going to take me next week (Sunday, Oct 15 to midday Friday, Oct 20) to El Paso, TX and I plan to have my Arrow and a pair of HTs with me for portable FM bird operation from my hotel. I haven't any idea if there are already active satellite operators in DM61, but I look forward to trying from it. AO-51 and SO-50 are going to be the chief targets, and in particular evening passes of these sats with max elevation of at least 20-25deg from my portable QTH. I will not have wheels myself, but one of my colleagues will surely rent some and I might be able to get to an adjacent grid if it would generate more interest, probably to the north or east (the boundaries are close to El Paso, I think). Maybe I should put a couple of pence into this for what ever it's worth For the last four years I have had my ISP hook up via 2.4 gHz A Cisco 350 system over a 15 mile connect at 100 mw. Weather has not been a factor. I use a 36 inch vertically polarized dish . 50 feet of LMR 400 coax to the Cisco transceiver. This is possible because the dish looks down a water shed where the fall off is equal to at least 3 feet per mile. That makes trees disappear so to speak. All of this might be a bit unusual , but it is possible. I also use 2.4 gHz for Sat TV extention 3 systems using 433 mHz for data and control . My shack is a separate building 50 feet behind the house. The only interference I had on 2.4 gHz was when Santa provided a telephone remote that was a frequenncy hopper on 2.4 gHz. I gave that back to Santa and asked for 900 mHz spread spectrum unit No more interferrence. Comcast has autoblocked amsat-bb as a source of spam. This is crap of course but it will take some time to get them to fix it. I have not seen a note in my in-box since early Sunday. It is time to look foward...

It is a good time to move on. There was a lot of discussion on both sides of the fence. The board has made a decision to move forward with the Eagle communication package and a clear compromise has emerged. For example: Eagle will have a lot of what was asked for by the membership (see 2004 survey results in the AMSAT Journal Vol 27 # 5). We (the members) asked for Mode U/V and the board responded with: An SSB/CW (etc.) transponder with uplink on U-band and downlink on V-band. System design has a goal that it be usable over 75% of the orbit, as well as a low rate text message system, like SMS. In addition, the membership asked for U/S, V/A and L/S and the board responded with: An SSB/CW (etc.) transponder with uplink on L-band and downlink on S1-band (2.4 Ghz), .and a lot more. There will always be questions and need for discussions. However, I hope that in the future board members will not keep the membership hostage by threatening to leave if they face criticism. I also hope that members will not anymore accuse elected members of running their own agenda, because face it; we all have our agenda and ideas. The difference is that some are willing to work for it as volunteers within AMSAT and move the organization and projects forward. It is important to notice that we all elect the board to make decisions. That's what they did. Now that decisions are made we can look forward to make our dreams of a new HEO a reality. All of the recently elected board members promised to be transparent and communicate their ideas and thoughts with us. In return we need to keep our promise as members to support AMSAT and the projects ahead. Let's keep our promises to each other and together AMSAT will be what we all want it to be, a place where we can enjoy a great hobby and at the same time learn from each other. It is "Thanksgiving" weekend in Canada and I am certainly thankful for all of the amateur radio satellites that "others" have made a reality for me to use and enjoy. I am also thankful for all the new birds in planning and construction that again many "others" are working hard to make into reality. You got the conversion right... :-) Interesting radios, the question is whether small business will take to them, and how far down the price will drop. The current price (269 UK Pounds) is definitely going to limit it to those security conscious businesses who want more than 5 users at a time in a conversation (up to 5 users can be handled using cell phone PTT fairly cheaply over much greater distances). In the longer term, they may become an issue.

Fellow Amsat members and satellite enthusiasts, I have been a member of AMSAT-NA and Amsat-UK since 1993 and have for the most part greatly enjoyed the amateur satellite hobby. I have been around long enough to have suffered through (if one can suffer for a hobby) Mr. McGwier once before in regards his participation in the DSP 2232. I was frankly extremely disappointed to see him become heavily involved in a major AMSAT satellite project. Based on his public statements concerning the DSP 2232, I fully expected him to be very opinionated, intolerant of criticism, and quick to place blame on others when challenged concerning any aspect of his work. I also expected, and still expect, that he will quit claiming he is unappreciated and that the project can succeed only if his advice is followed. I formed this opinion of Mr. McGwier through reading his many long posts concerning his involvement in the DSP 2232 project and by daily using the device both as it was shipped and as others later made it fully usable for satellite work. You may wish to Goggle up the archives from that time and read them. I think you will find many similarities between their tone and content and that of his recent post to this board. I will not comment on the many inappropriate statements in Mr. McGwier's post save the following: "I am really personally disappointed in the level of discourse in the AMSAT BB. It is extremely harmful, possibly beyond repair, to our organization. We are seeking serious external funding, and we need to make a significant investment in many areas to get this spacecraft built. I have never been prouder of where the AMSAT-NA and AMSAT-DL engineers are going on your behalf than I am right now. I am very disappointed in the members of this forum. It is so damaging to our public image that if this does not improve and significantly, I will have to recommend that we end its current form. It appears Mr. McGwier is fearful that continued discussion of what the designers wish to build may negatively effect the "serious external funding" required to build it. This to me fully supports the view that the designers wish to be funded to build what they wish and not what the amateur satellite community wish to operate. I do not believe attempting to squelch the free exchange of views is helpful. I suggest that better and more timely communication is appropriate including opinions incongruent with those of Mr. McGwier. The current debate started as a result of a lack of communication from the designers. There will certainly be more if the situation does not improve. The designers must realize that communication with the folks from whom they expect support is as much a part of assuring a successful project as the hardware design. Working as a volunteer, for however many hours, does not excuse being intolerant of the views of other members of the organization nor by itself does it support the validity of one's own views. Perhaps Mr. McGwier will learn to hit the delete button before dispatching more of these all to familiar abrasive, unprofessional, and intolerant commentaries. History offers little hope this will occur. If you think this opinion harsh then read again the last sentence in the above quote: "In my opinion, there is not a single member of the included thread who can hold their heads high and be proud of it." The AMSAT VP of Engineering states that no one participating in a thread critical of his views on a single subject can be proud of themselves ... I believe the exact opposite.

Instant Trak and Windows XP

I believe that has been asked in the past but I do not remember the answer or fix if there was one. The characters in the map section of Instant Trak are all garbage characters in map mode. The rest of the characters in other modes appear to be fine. Does any know if there is a fix for this? I have tried various screen setting changes including fonts, but to no avail. Eagle Ground Station Pak

Does anyone have any idea what will be in the proposed Eagle Ground Station package that has been proposed to be provided from Amsat? I assume this is for the digital transponder, correct? Might it be a patch antenna combo for S/C that would attach to a dish antenna? Would it include the upconverter and downconverter required to work S/C digital? Depending on what is included I might be interested in building such a kit/package for users. Les W4SCO

I then realized that being only 4 feet across, it would make a much more manageable 802.11 "S" band dish for terrestrial work.! Keep the feed point at the same place, but you can still throw away 1/4th, 1/2 or 3/4ths of the original dish and only use what is convenient. In this case, only the 1/4th quadrant. Put your "S" band feed at the same old focal point but pointed at the center of what's left and now you have a perfectly good 4 foot or so OFFSET FEED large "S" band dish. And a cute thing is that it LOOKS like it is looking up at satellites (because of the top mounted offset feed) when in fact, it is now looking horizontal. So the fu ll size dish is nice, but usually too big to be manageable. But 1/4th of it still makes a great "S" band system... de WB4APR, Bob

Microsat Telemetry data archive

For those that maybe interest (and even if you're not), that URL below points to a group of directories containing telemetry data collected by those whose calls you see listed. This data was at the beginning of the life of the various Microsats (AO-16, LU-19, etc.) and even include AO013 and a couple of Fuji satellites. This data was collected and sent to me to allow for access later by the command stations and even some schools for review. I thought that some may be interested in reviewing the data contents and comparing with the more recent satellites now in use. ftp://bristor-assoc.com/pub/Amateur/Microsat/ This next URL contains some of the programs that were used to collect and/or review the captured telemetry data. The data is in the form of raw, ascii and WOD (Whole Orbit Data). Some of these programs and others are probably available at the AMSAT.ORG site as well. The data file names are basically date.type. Hopefully this will be useful to someone. John, My understanding was that ECHO is operating with only 0.3W on the UHF digital downlink and that is 5 dB less power than even PCSAT2. But this is only because the present firmware on the satelite does not account for bursty packet operations. SO the transmitter is on 24/7 all around the world transmitting even when no one is in the footprint so it is an inefficient way to conserve power for digital which only has uses over about 10% of the Earth. From what I understand, it is on their TO-DO list to change the firmware so that the TX only is on when it has user demand. THis soiuld allow for drqastically imcreasing TX power. So we just have to wait until this is done, or hav a pretty good receive station. But all we need are a few receive stations to feed into the global APRS system and that is a big part of it. I really do get bored reading about all these threats to Mode S from WiFi, etc. NOT! These are 100 mW devices...maximum! That means they have to be relatively close to your QTH for you to hear them. 1. Pick up your old laptop, or borrow one. 2. Plug in a Linksys wireless PC card from Radio Shack. 3. Download the free NetStumbler shareware. 4. Find the source of the Wifi QRM. 5. Knock on his door and ask him to change his AP to a channel 7 - 11 (outside the Ham Band) 6. Reason: He's interfering with a licensed radio service (be nice!). 7. Return to your radio room and operate Mode S until LOS. This is child's play guys! These are consumer grade wireless devices, not super computers. Fixing such local QRM issues is easier than solving the old fashioned TVI problems. The most troublesome devices I have found , even to WiFi, are 2.4 GHz cordless phones. In that case the only solution I have found is to go next door and offer to buy him a replacement cordless phone of any type he would like EXCEPT one on 2.4 GHz. That is a cheap solution. They're usually not more than $79.95 while you probably have multiple Ks of $ invested in your satellite ground station. For a bunch of supposedly sophisticated wireless guys, you sure don't know beans about consumer grade wireless devices. That includes our wonderfully dedicated but pessimistic AMSAT satellite engineers! Now get on with the work, and get those birds into orbit! (HI). Luc, OK, you're right. Some folks can't handle ridicule, so I will try to be more tutorial and less shaming. But it never stops amazing me how folks in a technical wireless avocation such Amateur Radio can have such an extremely narrow focus in wireless! For example, hand a standard satellite telephone to the average Ham, even an AMSAT member, and ask him to make one phone call, just one. Or give them a Linksys 802.11g Access Point (AP) from Radio Shack and ask them to set up a small wireless local area network (WLAN). Or this one: Hand them a old laptop PC and ask them to upgrade it to a WiFi wireless client and then go down to their local coffee shop and surf the Internet. Please keep in mind, these are ALL common consumer wireless devices! And our lovely test subjects are all supposedly sophisticated wireless licensed RADIO amateurs. But chances are excellent they would NOT HAVE A CLUE how to do any of these common consumer wireless tasks. They left their wireless curiosity on the door step somewhere and got super specialized. Opps...there is that ridicule tone again. Got to stop that! (HI) Why am I rambling on like this? Because the result of all this is that satellite Hams can send a signal on a 50k mile round trip to some bird they helped design (remotely) and build (remotely) themselves, but they can NOT figure out how to manage a $60 unlicensed wireless device their neighbor bought at Best Buy. So they spend hours on this reflector lamenting the potential loss of a cherished Mode S instead applying just a tiny little bit of traditional Amateur Radio ingenuity and tracking down and dealing with the low power device(s) in their own neighborhood. However, there is one saving grace. The WiFi users are no better, buth then they don't claim to some kind of wireless guru. They will come to me because their AP is running slow. They suspect interference. I will tell them about free NetStumbler software. Load it and tell me what you see. Next day. They return and say they saw that all three of the other neighbors and themselves are all on the device's default radio channel 6! So I advise them to go back into their AP configuration software and change their AP channel to 11. The next day...miracle! The slow problem went away! Amazing! Well, Hams can do the same thing! Chances are if they use NetStumbler to look at their neighborhood they will see the following frequency channel distribution of devices: 90% on channel 6 (most common WiFi default channel) -- NO problem. Ignore these. 5% on channel 11 -- NO problem, that's not even in the Ham Band. Ignore these. 10% on channel 1 -- Ahh! Those are the problem! They must be gently persuaded to go to some channel above 1. That may solve your problem. Better yet, ask them to move to some channel above 6. That way they are starting to get out of the Ham band entirely. That 10% on channel 1 may amount to only 1 or 2 WiFi users in your entire neighborhood. A little TVI-type PR in reverse and a little TLC and the problem is solved! How's that Luc? A little more encouraging? Sunlit or not.

Hi All, As Mak SV1BSX and Luc VE2DWE have both pointed out, AO-7 *was* in sunlight at 09:58 today and it was La2qaa being stupid! - (my words) - that was the reason for the confusion - by looking at the *groundtrack* and not at the eclipse information as he should have done. Obviously, La2qaa doesn't know his arse from his elbow at that time in the morning. Having said that, I received a *lot* of mails and the interesting thing is that according to SV1BSX that particular orbit was 45920, according to KT2Q it was 45922 and according to the AO-7 resource page it was 45926. I don't think I'm the only one who had his knickers in a twist Like GM1SXX - (the "sensible" half of the act) - says, it all comes down to the idiosyncracies of the algrothym of the tracking program used. Alan, I have a 900 MHz cordless phone I bought from Radio Shack last year, so they must still be making them. It is Model 43-3870. We have 440 and 1200 MHz Amateur repeaters here, but nothing on 900 MHz to mess up. And, this phone doesn't bother my WiFi or HSMM DXing activities (both are 802.11g modulation), so it should work well on Mode L/S, which I hope to use someday! Hello Folks, As we all know (or assumed), AO-7's battery system has been down the tube for a couple of decades. However, this morning I got quite a surprise. I always monitor the old girl before actually *bellowing* into the microphone. As is my want, I was watching both InstantTRACK and NOVA on seperate computers (and before you comment, my keps are! correct and up to date). The satellite came up over Northern Russia at 09:58 UTC on the 45926 orbit and was in complete darkness at that time but just for a laugh I sent a few CQ's on CW (432.150 up 145.941 down) and to my surprise I copied LA2QAA calling CQ - (that's me folks). Thinks ... "This can't be, the batteries are knackered". This instigated careful checks of time (Atomtime Pro), keps & doppler - no doubt - (both InstantTRACK and Nova agreed) - AO-7 was in darkness but I was able to copy my downlink at S3. A few minutes later, when the old girl came into sunlight my signal shot up to S8. Careful checks of my hearing and senility confirmed that both are! functioning correctly. So ... how come I could hear myself when AO-7 was in darkness?. As can be imagined, I will keep tabs on this tomorrow morning. Sensible explanations please written on the back of a clean $100 bill wrapped round a wallbrick and chucked through my window - or - an e-mail to <la2qaa(a)amsat.org> at a pinch, will suffice 73 John.

Bob, You are NEVER going to hear your neighbor's WiFi @ 10 miles! Come on, Bob! I have experienced this near / far phenomenon of which you write many times It is something in the RF environment with which we need to learn to deal. I work in a location where I normally monitor 40 -60 WiFi devices at the same time, yet I manage to get a signal through such nasty terrain. A hand-full of neighbors wouldn't make me completely re-design an OSCAR and drop an entire transponder! You must be one of those pessimist we were writing about earlier. Put the math aside and go out to your front yard and meet those fine WiFi folks! If you want to avoid interference to the 902MHz, 2.4GHz, and 5.8GHz ham bands when using a cordless phone, then look for a DECT 6.0 model. This was authorized earlier this year by the FCC in the Unlicensed PCS band from 1920-1930 MHz. http://www.dect.org/content.aspx?newsartikel=news15 Even Wal*Wart has them. I saw two different models at the local store. Most home wireless networks use 802.11g or the older 802.11b. Both of these are in the 2.4Ghz band, so moving to a 5.8Ghz cordless phone does solve the interference problem. A few people have purchased equipment using 802.11a. This is on 5.8Ghz but did not become as popular as 802.11b/g. So for most people, replacing their 2.4 cordless phones with 5.8 will do the trick. Of course, microwaves are on 2.4 Ghz also. I solved the microwave problem by getting directional antennas so the 802.11g signals were just too strong to be bothered by the microwave. But it is good to know about the DECT 6.0 1920-1930 Mhz phones. Thanks for the information. Have you ever read any texts from the ARRL, etc. on how to manage a TVI problem? They are not as popular as they once were, but you can still find them around. John, If the bird is in range and it's daylight at your location, then the satellite is also in daylight. If any part of it's footprint is in daylight, the satellite is sunlit. As is my want, I was watching both InstantTRACK and NOVA on seperate computers (and before you comment, my keps are! correct and up to date). The satellite came up over Northern Russia at 09:58 UTC on the 45926 orbit and was in complete darkness at that time but just for a laugh I sent a few CQ's on CW (432.150 up 145.941 down) and to my surprise I copied LA2QAA calling CQ - (that's me folks). Thinks ... "This can't be, the batteries are knackered". This instigated careful checks of time (Atomtime Pro), keps & doppler - no doubt - (both InstantTRACK and Nova agreed) - AO-7 was in darkness but I was able to copy my downlink at S3. A few minutes later, when the old girl came into sunlight my signal shot up to S8. Careful checks of my hearing and senility confirmed that both are! functioning correctly. So ... how come I could hear myself when AO-7 was in darkness?. As can be imagined, I will keep tabs on this tomorrow morning. HITSAT - Object J

Over the last two days I have concluded that HITSAT is more likely to be Object J, than Object B. Using Object J, I am able to hold the CW tone, to +/- 100 Hertz, using homebrew software that updates the RX every 1 second. Colin VK5HI.

Hi Colin, do you mean really OBJECT J (NORAD 29491)? Between OBJECT B (29480) and OBJECT J is a time difference of 27 minutes. I can hear HITSAT from AOS to LOS with OBJECT B. But a correction of -1KHz in CW Mode (FT-736R with small filters) is necessary. A second question: the RCS of OBJECT B is 9.0. I have an M2 23cm35 at 10 ft. If I were to put up a 7 1/2 ft TVRO dish with a patch feed for 1.2 ghz would I get any more gain or is that a waste of time? Thanks for any info. George

Hello Dave, G1OCN I tryed yesterday evening AO-51 on this mode, and it works fine I noticed only a little bit QSB, but not so much. SatPC32 Problem

I've been enjoying SatPC32 for quite some time running on an old HP PIII running Windows ME. It suddenly started to create problems. Now when I open the application it takes control of my FT-847 through CAT port but the main map/control screen never opens, however, the application appears below in the applications bar as though it were running. It also fails to call up the FodTrack DDE client. Any suggestions or has anyone encountered similar problems? 73 Rick W2JAZ

Kansas City Tracker info

Hi all, I've just bought a Kansas City Tracker board, and have a couple questions about it. I hope someone that reads this list might have the answer? I haven't received my board yet, but from what I've read online, there were a few options available on the KCT. Of particular interest to me is the 'Rotor Interface' Option, since my azimuth rotor is a CDE/Hygain Ham II. I've read that the KCT was designed more for the Yaesu/Kenpro type rotors, but this option was available to facilitate use with other rotors. MER beta software

Hi all, I have just placed a beta version of a piece of software for decoding the data endoded in MER images filenames e.g. 2N164809112EFFA8C5P1795L0M1.jpg The software will display the image while browsing your collection, decode the exact time on Earth (UTC and Local time zones), display the correct SOL number. Show a larger size image. Display images in stereo if an image pair is available. Other information is displayed and some still being worked on. It displays Martian day time but the solar clock is still being worked on, so, it is approx. an hour out at times. If you have any suggestions for additions or changes, let me know. Please have a look at the screen shots page. The downloads are at the bottom of the page, if you do not have WinRar, the best choice to download would be the bottom one MerdatBeta.exe. with a picture of the rover on it. PC Sat

I set up to transmit through PC Sat today at 1655 UTC only to hear the W3ADO callsign (;-( It seems lots of stations still use the bird when she is defaulted to W3ADO, I turned off TX but I got to thinking the stations that are using this sat may not know that they should not be using it under that call. Does somebody tell them (Via Email) the error of their ways or are they allowed to go on as they are? Just a thought. Yes, PCSAT-1 acts just like any terrestrial APRS digipeater. So we wanted to make sure it would respond to any path that is typicallly used by terrestrial users so that all they had to do to use it was to change their frequency, and not have to also change their path. So PCSAT-1 was made to respond to all of the existing and legacy paths that are used on APRS. They are: RELAY WIDE WIDEn-N TRACEn-N and ARISS And we are seeing many people using a variet of these paths. HOWEVER, there is a problem when people use the WIDEn-N and TRACEn-N paths, since these are decremented at each hop. Thus, a WIDE2-2 packet digiepated by PCSAT-1 will appear as ...PCSAT-1,WIDE2-1 and will not indicate the PCSAT-1* until the final hop. In this case, there is only one hop and so the FINDU.COM web-page that parses all APRS traffic looking for packets via PCSAT-1 will not see them because it wont see the PCSAT-1* marker. If people want to keep track of their success on FINDU.COM ( http://pcasat.aprs.org ) then they should not use a n-N path and should change their SSID so that their station call is unique for this space application. Otherwise, as soon as they use the same station again on terrestrial APRS, then the posit via the satellite will be overwritten. Bob, WB4APR

AO-51 Mode L/U over West Malaysia

Hello All, This morning, 2nd October 2006 at 0945 Hours Local or 0145 Hours UTC, we had a 72 degree pass of AO-51 over West Malaysia. My father, Dr. Chow C. O., 9M2CCO and I were in the shack this morning to prepare for the pass. This would be our first attempt to test out the L band as there are no terrestrial activities on the L band locally to try it out. First of all, we started with the V/U repeater after AOS. After verifying that we could operate it normally, we gave out a few CQ calls, but unfortunately no one responded. Then we moved to the L/U repeater. My father gave out a few CQ calls, as I could not operate on this frequency. (just because I am reluctant to take the morse code test) To our surprise, with only 10 Watts of power from the ICOM IC-910H into a 16-Element Comet Yagi Antenna, gave a very clear and solid audio on the downlink. When the elevation was above 30 degrees, only 5 watts of power was needed to have a very clear downlink. However, a little more power was needed when the elevation dropped below 30 degrees. 10 watts was more than enough until about 5 degrees in elevation. But we have some surrounding tall buildings in the LOS direction anyway. To conclude our first L band test, I would say that this is a very interesting mode, and it requires less power on the uplink as compared to 2M. Maybe this is due to the fact that the 2M band is polluted with illegal operations around this region. This can be proven when AO-51 is operating without the required PL tone. Equipment used were ICOM IC-910H, 10-Element Yagi for 2M, 2x15-Element Yagi for 70CM (Unfortunately no preamp for the downlink) and 16-Element Yagi for 23 CM. All antennas are vertically polarized. The station here was also automatically tracking the antenna and Doppler and this made operating very simple. A big thank you to the command team for this very interesting mode, and will like to see it more often in the future. upgrading from my FT-726R?

I currently have/use the old FT-726R for satellite and weak-signal work. I have brick amps and mast-mounted preamps for each band. My question is: I have been considering upgrading to something more current--the usual list of suspects like the FT-736, IC-821H, IC-910H, or TS-790A (probably not the IC-970H because of $, but that depends on the findings from this msg..). At least according to the various QST reviews, I don't see a lot of separation in basic RF performance between this whole group of radios. It's clear that if I want any sort of computer control of the rig that any of the list would do, and the most recent ones have options like AF DSP, but purely from an RF perspective...the QST reviews were not much improved from the FT-726R for any radio. Particularly appalling to me was the published TX IMD of both the FT-736 and the IC-910H... So, if computer control isn't a big deal, is there really a compelling reason to change? Are the reviews flawed/overly pessimistic? The older radios were pre-phase noise testing, but none of the current rigs seem all that great in that respect anyway. What am I missing?
