Greetings All! As many of you have done, I have been tracking satellite design and construction for years. If we have learned one thing, it is that this is not your Dad's Amateur Radio. Legacy ground gear investment is irrelevant. We must go where the engineering constraints lead us. If that is to 10 GHz, then so be it. And, digital is the future of Amateur Radio (and all other radios) anyway. Besides, I will do nearly anything not to have to mess around on the roof again with that huge long-boomed 145 MHz cross-polarized yagi. You could shoot you eye out! (HI) John - K8OCL

At the risk of bodily attack, let me offer some comments on the topic that has produced so much AMSAT-BB traffic. The Eagle Mode-S decision was made at the conclusion of an intense, but very productive design meeting held in San Diego, just 2 months ago, at the end of June. In case you feel that we haven't told you what went on and why the radical changes, please refer to the very latest (July/August) AMSAT JOURNAL for some of the details of the meeting. In particular, I ask you to read Rick's (W2GPS) editorial on Page 3, and Bob's (N4HY) "Engineering Notebook" beginning with "Warning: Honesty Follows" on pages 9/10, and the Jim's (WB4GCS) Eagle Update on pages 24/25. As you can see from the pictures in Bob's Engineering Notebook, the meeting included your AMSAT President (W2GPS), VP of Engineering (N4HY), Eagle Project Manager (WB4GCS) and two Board members (W2GPS & K3IO). To answer one oft-posed question, the entire Board has not met since the June meeting; the material constitutes the current "best guess" engineering forecast, and the Board has been told of the conclusions (and they have read the Journal); but as of now no votes have been taken. Feel free to contact the Board members if you feel that your desires have not been taken into consideration. After the design group went through careful estimates of the link budgets for each of the classes of users we considered (see Jim's paper on Page 24 and/or my CSVHFS presentation), and considered the feasibility of making the spacecraft work, we came to the conclusion that my C-C Rider concept wouldn't fly; there was no way we could obtain enough T/R isolation for full-duplex operation, and using half-duplex with the time delays associated with a satellite 40,000 km away was impractical. C'est la vie. We considered the RFI environment carefully (see my CSVHFS paper for details) as it would exist 10 years from now. Why 10 years? Well, it will take us 3-4 years to fly Eagle, and then we hope it will last and be useful for at least a decade, so a 10 year forecast seemed about right. In that time frame, many of us (me especially) feel that the European Galileo GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System, i.e. GPS) (and possibly similar systems being designed in Japan & China) will have prime DOWNLINK signals overlaying our 1260-1270 MHz UPLINK band. The signals being sent down may well be deemed critical for "Safety of Life" services; it is not unlikely (double negative used intentionally) that administrations may cancel out our L-band uplink so those "damned Hams can't cause an A380 with 500 people on board to crash!". Since weight, power and volunteer engineering talent are all finite resources, we came to the conclusion that it was not prudent for us to invest in an L-band uplink. C'est la vie. We then considered the S1 (13 cm) and S2 (9 cm) allocations. It's a pity that amateurs cannot use the S2 = 9 cm (3400 MHz) band in Region 1; it would be PERFECT as an alternate to L-band. I argued long and hard for it and was beaten down. However, it might find some use for telemetry downlinks. The 10 GHz = X-band and higher microwave frequencies were considered as possible interesting channels for experimental use, but not really practical for "heavy lifting" transponders. C'est la vie. I'll come back to S1 & C-band in a bit. During the discussions we put in hard numbers for each of the possible bands for each of the classes of users we envisioned (See Jim's article on Page 23 and my slides). We were already planning on the use of a Mode-B (70 cm up, 2M down) Software Defined Transponder (SDX) which would be PERFECT for the legacy "Class-0" users. We then discussed our desire for a new Class-1 service. This is envisioned as a service which can send short text messages from portable hand-held terminals, rather like the SMS messaging service in wide use by teen-agers and similar to Bob Bruninga's APRS messaging. The idea is based in a desire to have Amateur Radio ready for the next Katrina or Christmas Tsunami disaster. When we put in the link budget numbers for hand-held terminals (including antennas) with a satellite at 40,000 km range, it also dictated the use of Mode-B. (Detailed spreadsheets justifying this conclusion are posted on EaglePedia). In fact, Fran Brickle (AB2KT) is already hard at work on the protocol and SDX code and plans to present a paper at San Diego. Now let's turn our attention to the controversial S-band topic. Jan King (W3GEY/VK4GEY) presented quantitative results that he and Kerry Banke (N6IZW) had obtained in San Diego, Palo Alto & Queensland on the 2.4 GHz RFI environment. He indicated that, even in the midst of a field hundreds of meters from the nearest building, the RFI levels were 20+ dB above thermal as seen with a non-directional antenna. Others in the meeting reported anecdotal data that noise levels in some small towns had increased 60+ dB in three years since WiFi systems were installed. Several people in the meeting told the effects of the newer (802.11G and 802.11DraftN) 50-100 Mbit/s systems and discussed plans that they new industry had in the pipeline that will make the situation even worse. This is especially true on the 10+ year time scales that Eagle must be designed for. In my CSVHFS paper, you will see a slide that says "S-Band is a Sewer". Part of this is our own inadvertent fault. With AO-40 & AO-51, we use S-Band in a receive mode. The non-licensed users have no idea that we are occupying the frequency. What better way to clear them out (now here's a radical thought) than by TRANSMITTING instead of receiving! And we noted the easy availability of surplus S-band power amplifiers at the 5-30 watt level. Thus S-band lost its "beauty" for downlink and became a band for uplinks. And we noted that in locations where a fairly high power ATV repeater was operating on S-band, the QRM was a LOT less. Yes, this decision was based on incomplete data. It would be wonderful if many of you took the challenge to make quantitative measurements of the S-band RFI levels in multiple locations. Just take your S-band LNA, put on a low-gain antenna and measure the difference in background noise level between that antenna and a 50 ohm dummy load as accurately as you can. You will get better accuracy if you can use a wide measurement bandwidth (10-100 kHz or so). Remember to disable your receiver's AGC. A good spectrum analyzer would be an excellent choice to use as the detector. Please feel free to send me any such measurements along with notes on the equipment you used and the environment where you made the tests (urban, rural, etc). My Email address is mailto:[email protected]. Since L and S2 had been ruled out for reasons described above, this left us with the possibility of using C-band as a DOWNLINK. There are some concerns about the 802.11A/cordless phone/etc QRM, but we noted that the Amateur Satellite DOWNLINK band is above most of the crap (5830-5850 MHz). The work I had done on C-C Rider had shown that, with a phased array antenna and a power amplifier at each element, we could generate adequate power so that a Class-A user with a 50 cm diameter (i.e. DirecTV) dish would have good performance. The S/C links were designed as digital links. The uplink signals would have error correction coding that would be decoded at the spacecraft, and then sent down with "fresh" codes on the downlink. This makes the satellite links much easier (by tens of dB) than if they were "bent pipe" linear links. The users would be able to use any type of signal they desire (Voice, SSTV or even CW). In all this design work, we took into account that the typical user does not have the digital and S/C RF widgets. The plan is to develop the user's hardware at the same time, in parallel with the spacecraft hardware; AMSAT would then make this available to all. We envisioned using the TAPR TNC-2 model -- TAPR "seeded" the community by distributing a few hundred kits, and then licensed the design to commercial manufacturers. In conclusion, I ask you, the satellite users to consider what will be the state-of-the-art and the state of amateur radio in the window 5-15 years from now. It may be painful to admit that you invested in an S-band down converted and barbecue grill dish for a now-defunct AO-40. Just consider the big picture -- I've been around long enough to think back on the early 70s: People had cobbled together 2M CW transmitters for use on Mode-A with AO-6. Then AO-7 came along with Mode-B and the loud cry went up "Now we have to throw away our 2M transmitters and then figure out how to make a transmitter that can work on UHF!!". And when the lower frequency transmitters failed on AO-40, people had to listen on S-band. Admit it -- it wasn't all that hard to accept new technology. 73 de Tom, K3IO

I had a 2 meter all-mode mobile rig (FT480R) I paid 50 dollars for connected to a cushcraft 4 element Yagi beam. I purchased a 70 centimeter FT790RII for $125 and made a homebrew 8 element Yagi. Antennas are monted on single azimuth rotator mast and angled up about 10 degrees. This setup works extremely well for hamsat (VO-52). Now, going from LEO hamsat to HEO Eagle, I will probably have to make a longer UHF yagi and add an amplifier, Also a longer VHF beam. I already have a mirage 2 meter amp with built in preamp. Hello All, At 10 september 2006 is a balloon fox hunt event in Holland. On the balloon is also a 70cm->2m crossband repeater active. Uplink: 432.550Mhz Downlink: 145.475Mhz (mode FM). You do not have to correct doppler. Other equipment mounted on the balloon. 80m. beacon active on 3.582Mhz (1 watt FSK). 2m. beacon active on 145.450Mhz ATV video transceiver 2330Mhz (with a camera looking to earth). Maybe the message above does not belong in the amsat mail reflector - but I'm sure many satellite enthusiasts (here in europe) might like to trie the balloon repeater. In 2005 I have worked 5 different countries via the balloon x rep. (F/G/ON/PA/DL). I herewith respond to some. All along, the Eagle project has put a premium on hard science, rigorous peer review, and dispassionate analysis. All along we knew there might or would be some changes to what we've been planning. With several other issues on the move or decided, we took a few days in late June to hammer out, based on science, the transponder situation. We did multiple, independent link analyses, and all came to the same conclusion. We validated interference predictions with measurements that have been taken. The conclusion is that S-band is marginally useful as a downlink today (unusable in many locations), and by the time Eagle is launched, and through it's lifetime, will be unusable. Personally, I do not like this decision. I have S-band equipment that I was looking forward to using. Personally, I can live with this decision, and defend it to myself, let alone anyone else, because I am convinced that it is technically sound. As one of you commented this evening, AO-40 wasn't exactly a rock crusher on S-band. It worked, and adequately, at least on CW, but was not great. As I reflect on my personal AO-40 experiences, I now understand that there are 2 reasons for my disappointment. Local noise was one, and transponder distortion was another -- the latter will be corrected by SDX. S-band on AO-40, by necessity not choice, got many of us out of our comfort zones and convinced us that microwaves really aren't that hard. Let's enter the realm of S up and C down with that same realization. REMEMBER THAT AMSAT IS DEVELOPING THE GROUND STATION ALONG WITH THE SPACE SEGMENT. You will not be left on your own to develop ground equipment. You will not be asked to mortgage your house; affordability by the masses is a key component of the design for the entire system. Comparison with AO-51 is an "apples and oranges" thing. The path losses are much different. FM is very unlike CW/SSB or wideband digital modes. Remember that a goal of the Eagle system is that everything is on all the time. No more matrix switches, no more schedules. We need up and downlinks to be useful throughout the entire orbit. Why did we "regress" to U/V? For one reason, many of you asked for it, and some of us worked hard to somehow incorporate that capability in response to member's desires. The foot in the door was the utility of a V-band beacon in case everything else goes sour. The forcing function was as follows. A goal of Eagle has always been some kind of hand-held or jump bag portable ground station capability for entry into the emergency area while the tsunami waters are receeding and the hurricane winds are down to gale force. Many of us thought we could take advantage of the gain in small antennas to do this on the microwaves. Rigorous link analysis led us to the conclusion that the best place to do this is U/V -- both from a RF/DC power perspective, and from a link standpoint. This leads to the digital and "traditiona"l transponder package for U/V, implemented in SDX. Why not also include a (switchable) S-band downlink in parallel with the V-band? Remember, no switches. Also, we run into an antenna space problem. We've already increased the size of the spacecraft from where we started, and for many reasons, do NOT want to build something as large as AO-40. A couple of you have commented this evening that perusing EaglePedia has not revealed the details of the decisions. That is because, while Bob McGwier (N4HY) and I have been working on the report of the meeting, it is not public. We've been working hard on it since June, in and around other AMSAT, ham radio, and life events. Shortly after I push send on this message, I'll begin my final look at that document prior to public release. Before I go spend time with the spousal unit TONIGHT, I will finish it and publish it. I will send an announcement on the amsat-bb that it is public. To read the report, go to the EaglePedia main page, and select project index. From there, select Team and Meetings, and there will be several options, not all public. The San Diego meeting minutes will be obvious and public. Several of you have commented, "If S-band is unusable, why is it flying on P3E?" Fair question, but I can't answer for AMSAT-DL. I DO know that the P3E system design is considerably older and farther along than Eagle. Eagle design decisions were made based on the best information in June of 2006. Aspects of this discussion have been worthy of /dev/null. More aspects of this discussion have raised valid points and reasonable questions, deserving of response, which is why I've been composing this note for the last four hours or so. A few have raised the old allegation of the builders doing what they want, without regard to users needs. This is not true. While the desire to advance the state of the art (part of amateur radio's justification for existence and allocation of valuable spectrum) leads to enthusiasm and study of potentially useful new techniques, this desire had no impact on our analysis-based decisions. We started with requirements and services, and explored what would deliver. I thank all of you for your interest and support. Your Eagle team is working hard to develop a system that will serve our needs, as well as advance the state of the art. As promised, we are making decisions based on sound, peer-reviewed science, not anybody's opinions or desires. Please read the report, study the spreadsheets, download the excel file and play with it. If you can, make your own measurements and put those numbers into the spreadsheet. I think you'll understand how these decisions were reached. After contemplating the report, send me your questions. I'll either respond or forward to he who can best respond. Another fundamental tenet of the Eagle project is openness, so you have a right to a response to a rational question. S-Band and Eagle -- User Inputs to the Design Process

I've been following the thread regarding the decision to drop S-Band downlink capabilities from Eagle with great interest. As usual, the factions are clearly falling into two groups--the "techies" and the "user community". However, before getting into my discussion on these two groups, I'd like to share a little research I did on peer reviewed work which has been done regarding an S-Band spectrum survey. I ran across an interesting paper titled "Measurements of Man-Made Spectrum Noise Floor" (NASA/CR-2004-213551 November 2004) based on work sponsored by NASA and the Department of Transportation and may be found at http://strategis.ic.gc.ca/epic/internet/insmt-gst.nsf/vwapj/smse00205-novat… Of interest to AMSAT members is Section 2, "L, S, and ISM Bands Survey". This section is an expanded version of the paper titled "L and S Bands Spectrum Survey in the San Francisco Bay Area" presented at the IEEE PLANS 2004 conference and may be found at http://waas.stanford.edu/~wwu/papers/gps/PDF/DoIEEEPLANS04.pdf I encourage all interested parties to download and review these two documents! This is peer reviewed science--not casual observations or opinions. The papers support the arguments presented by the Eagle team that the S-Band noise floor is 14 to 29 dB higher than thermal noise due to all the terrestrial emitters operating in this spectrum. However, it is very noteworthy, and must be pointed out, that all of these measurements were done with antenna systems pointed at the horizon! This forced me to ask the question of what does the spectrum look like at 5, 10, 15, 30 etc. degrees above the horizon? More on this later. In a recent email, Dr. Clark encourages folks to make spectrum surveys. Conceptually, this is a wonderful idea, but I seriously doubt many of us have the resources at hand to duplicate the measurement set up described in the above references. Without some form of a standardized measurement system the results obtained by "amateur observers" really do not hold water! It's imperative to have a calibrated measurement system along with a uniform methodology of taking measurements for them to have any true meaning. Otherwise we are back to subjective interpretation of the results. In another recent email to this list, Dr. McGwier provided us an EaglePedia link to the meeting minutes of the San Diego meeting. Thanks for this information Bob...it may not be ready for prime time, but it sure was interesting! It is with concern I noted that among the list of attendees, they were all "techies". Not a single name stuck out as a representative of the "USER community". This is sad! Years ago Boeing started bringing aircraft users into the design process by having them attend and actively participate in design reviews. As a result, Boeing has produced better aircraft which have received much higher marks from the users because their concerns were addressed during the design process. Google something to the effect of 'user involvement in the design process' and you will find a wealth of information on how to accomplish this as well as how successful it has been to countless concerns in addition to Boeing. From the outcry of AMSAT satellite users on this list, one can clearly see that many feel they are being ignored. And while I haven't been active on a bird in over 10 years, I have to concur with their feelings. EaglePedia is a wonderful idea, those involved in it are to be commended, but sadly, it provides information to the users AFTER the decisions have been made. AMSAT leaders...now is the time to actively bring users into the design process. There are multiple voices out there with good input waiting to be heard! It is too late after the "techie" decisions have been made. Back to the spectrum survey and the fact data was only measured at the horizon. Wouldn't it be interesting to have data at other elevation cuts? Perhaps we would find that the noise level is acceptable 60 to 75 percent of the time (this is a pure assumption for the sake of discussion). Would the user community be happy with this vs. horizon to horizon coverage? Would it be acceptable to the user community to employ a directional antenna to achieve this coverage? Given a trade-off between a whole new microwave station vs. antenna/tracking improvements, which way would the users want to go? You have to involve the users to get the answers! And how about this...how about adaptive antennas and null steering at the ground station to deal with this noise problem? 15 plus years ago when I looked at this it was out of the question in terms of cost for the average ham to implement. But oh how technology has changed with time. Give me a seven element S-Band array with a little hardware and software and I stand a good chance of nulling out six sources of terrestrial interference. Enough? Who knows...but without an S-Band downlink few will have the inclination to explore this fascinating area of technology at the ham radio level! Are we throwing out the baby with the bath water by ruling S-Band out on Eagle? I strongly think so. We all are subjected to interference in one form or another...be it from your neighbor's cordless phone to power line interference to junk transmitters in the commercial sector. There are solutions...not always easy ones, but there are solutions. You never find them unless you try. In closing, AMSAT has made some wonderful steps forward with EaglePedia but the organization needs to take this one step further. You have to actively involve the user community in the design process by including them in design reviews in real-time, not after the fact. Officers, board of directors, and AMSAT members...ask yourself one simply question and answer it please...why does AMSAT have such a low retention rate of members? I personally believe it is because the membership in general feels they have no say in matters and their voices are not heard. You want more satellites (numbers and performance) you have to grow the membership base. A vital step is in membership RETENTION! Remembering the days of AO-40. AO-40 had many ups and down as we all know, but S-band dwnlink did prove to be a life jacket for AO-40, and worked out great, many hams arond the world proved that you did not need a large dish to access the satellite's dwnlink provided the squint angle was below 20 degrees. remember the S1 tx'er I only had 33 contacts on that band but man did it kick some butt, on S2 tx'er I had 568 contacts, 40+ country's worked, hours of qso's, remember the many AO-40 beacon plus 20 nets, thanks to Dave WB6LLO no problems their. if AMSAT is going to take survey's of what the membership wants then don't do something different, this is how you loose members and funding, I like many others have already sent hundreds of dollars to the project eagle based on what your "AMSAT" survey had showed thinking that was the direction it would take. tell me if I'm wrong, but did the survey not show members want HEO's over LEO's and mode's preffered most was Mode-B and mode-S if it takes longer to come up with a design that will work based on what the members want so be it, I for one don't care if we don't have coverage 24/7 but we have a at least one HEO in orbit all times. I was originally going to replace my broken, aged Hy-Gain 2m/70cm twist Yagis with this antenna and put a dish on the other side of my az-el rotator. Eagle modes

Greetings Happy to have read about the design changes for eagle. Sorry so many people are upset about S band not being there. Wont it be on Phase 3E? I was very impressed that the amsat design team wants to please a large number of users without requiring large investments in ground stations. Better to accommodate as many as possible instead of evryone subsidizing a project for a select few high tech types. I will continue to donate to eagle in the future. No mode S on EAgle

AMSAT is not a production service, it is a platform for experimentation. Several amateur satellites support or will support S-band operation. I have been with the program long enough (OSCAR III) to have heard the screams about abandoning mode A then mode J. There were lots of arguments against going to S-band, and now the voices are saying please do not abandon S-band. Well S-band is not being abandoned. The proposed new satellite will be pushing us to explore 5.6 GHz. I look forward to the challenge and will still continue to monitor the UHF, L-band, and S-band transmissions from AMSAT-NA, AMSAT-DL, and whoever else has the foresight, volunteers, and resources to orbit these exciting satellites. WI-FI already migrating on 5ghz

What they are telling us about 2.4 and 5GHZ wi-fi system in a few minutes searching. It is not rigorously mathematics and statiscally not rigorous but ALL the actual and past commenting forecast a move towards 5 ghz. Wireless phone at 2.4 are at less that 25$ et some manucturers does not produce them anymore! Excerpt from the internet. When vendors began work on 802.11a, they did not want to stay in the 2.4-GHz range used with 802.11b products. The spectrum at 2.4 GHz is a shared frequency, so devices like cordless telephones and microwave ovens can create interference problems. Also, the vendors are able to squeeze out only about five channels -- or simultaneous user connections -- in this range, which relies on direct-sequence spread-spectrum technology, a signaling technique that places a premium on security and reliability while sacrificing efficient use of available bandwidth. Keeping to Themselves In the late 1990s, the Federal Communications Commission Latest News about Federal Communications Commission opened up a new frequency range -- the 5-GHz range -- that is only available for wireless LANs, so there is no outside interference. Also, it uses orthogonal frequency division multiplexing for modulation, which increases bandwidth efficiency so an access point can support about 10 simultaneous connections. Well it's time I jumped in on this subject!! I have read the all of the comments concerning the decision to drop a S band downlink on Eagle . It goes without notice that no one from the design team ( or AMSAT BOD ) has denied the rumor. If this reasoning exists please include on this AMSAT-BB. I took the time to read all of the Eaglepedia (which is a great service),( tnx Emily )and I see no reference to a PUBLIC discussion to abandon mode S downlink Going back to V/U modes seems to me taking a step backward to me. I was very active on AO-40 from here in Portland, Oregon. I am located in a urban area next to the High Tech. factories including the very large INTEL operation. I used a Primstar Dish and homebrew patch and had no difficultly working thru the few click present on the band. Please "Google" for AO-40 and look through the amount of information and help the average Amateur Radio satellite uplink builder can find to get on mode S. I will be looking for comments from the BOD or Eagle team that can verbilize for us why a "S-Band downlink" will not sour on our EAGLE . Attn: AO-51 new users

Remember that you need a PL of 67 Hz to access AO-51 in mode J-FM (except in QRP mode). Please, especially if you haven't worked a given satellite in mode J-FM before, make sure you can hear well enough copy callsigns before transmitting. There might be occasions on SO-50 when you're the only one on, but over the 'States, this is rather rare on AO-51, especially in high power mode. We're having problems with dead carriers on AO-51 this week, where sometimes even the regulars with good antenna setups can't get in due to interference from stations without PL. Please listen first and use the correct PL. 73's and good luck! -- KD6PAG

Icom IC91A for FM sat work?

Hello everyone, I am planning to retire my 20 year old dual-band HT, and replace it with a current model. I would like to get a handheld that will work well for FM satellite work as well as normal repeater operation. I know that the Kenwood D7A is popular, and I have heard some mention of the Icom W32 in the past. Has anyone tried the new Icom IC91A for FM sat work? Can it simultaneously transmit and receive? I generally like this over some of the new rigs due to it being a bit more "normal" sized to operate with big fingers. Ken, N0HRL

They will be able to work through the many Amateur Satellites as well use the Voice and Packet repeaters on the International Space Station (ISS). They can also talk directly to Astronauts in space. All three astronauts currently onboard the ISS are licenced Radio Amateurs and in their spare time operate the ISS Amateur Radio Station usually on 145.800 MHz FM. PCSAT2 on ISS continues to operate its FM voice downlink on 437.975 on most passes during waking hours. Since the Shuttle has been delayed for several days, and passes are 20+ minutes earlier each day, this results in passes during the Naval Academy's morning classroom hours in the USA area next week. For EASTERN USA stations, we want to make a special FM voice contact with other schools. The 0903 EDT and 1036 EDT passes on Tuesday the 12th will occur during our students satellite lab period and we hope to contact other schools or VIP ARISS stations. Bad and good news XE2AT !!

I back to home today afternoon with a bad news :-( I can reach the line of two grids at time, the first pass I can hear the satellite very strong but unfortunally I can go trough because strong stations crowded the sat :-( , elevation was below 10 degrees and a lot of trees were a bad recipe :-( The second pass was very high but I really dont know what happen , I can hear to Allen N5AFV at the beginingof the pass but then all was crowded with another signals !!!! I called several times but the problem continue, a lot of interference and nothing about AO51 !!! All pass and no QSOs !! what a mess, 1 hour driving and no QSOs.... Well now I am using a small TH6FA and is the second time that the interferences win to the satellite signal, the interference was from a close station in 70cm but I think the radio is not selective :-( bad new.... I really miss my old TH79 and the ICw32.... The good new is that tomorrow I will fly again, my wife is happy lady ,I will be close to DL62-63-72-73, so I will try to be the Thuesday night and if no QSOs I will try again the Friday morning,..... If somebody have the same problem in the receiver side of this radio please send me an email. W8EH observes: Part of the trouble that I observed with AO-51 is some stronger stations (without PL) or illegal cordless phones, are blanking out the uplink. I had trouble after the switch to V/U. I usually run 2 watts to a CP KLM beam. Even with the rig boosted up to 45 watts, I couldn't overcome whatever/whoever was blanking out the sat most of the time. Out of two passes this morning, I made only one contact. Lots of stations on, but only the strongest seemed to make it over whatever was blocking us. Strange that I didn't have that trouble at all when it was in V/S mode earlier. =========================================================== I noticed the same thing - it was like AO51 had the squelch set too high. I would hear stations call me and when I keyed the mic to answer I couldn't hear myself in the downlink. It seems to happen more when AO51 is at a high elevation, maybe because the offending non-pl tone station is in my part of the country or maybe it is just that my transmit antenna (KB6KQ loop) works best at lower angles. Don't notice it on SO50. -- Dave W8IJ

AO-51 back in mode J-FM (and VERY busy)

AO-51 is in high power mode J-FM this morning. I'm not sure if it's because it's a long weekend, in high power mode, or just off for awhile, but it was VERY crowded this morning. There were several interesting new or uncommon stations on, but they could not be worked at all QRP. I suspect they were having trouble as well. Eventually, folks did figure it out and paused to wait for a new/uncommon station to answer. It might be my own prejudices (as i haven't listened to the recording yet), but earlier in the pass, it seemed like it was mostly the 'regulars' working a few new-ish stations and each other. While 'standing on the soapbox', i'd say that i'd like to encourge folks to use the high power mode to let stations who have trouble hearing SO-50 or AO-51 to work satellites and get started. I would hope that folks who use mode J-FM on a regular basis would use coastal/oceanic passes, or SO-50, to say hello to their friends and/or talk at length about the weather. Alas, it is these conditions that discourage me from making my nantenna design widely available, as things are like this only discourage and frustrate new users, and easier access to mode J-FM might only make this worse. On the other hand, SO-50 has definitely seen more usage and interesting stations do pop up over the 'States, especially on transcontinental passes. So especially this week, give SO-50 a try, and try to show some restraint on AO-51 so new folks can take advantage of high power mode. -- KD6PAG (Networking Old-Timer, Satellite QRPer) P.S. This is our effort for ARRL's Amateur Awareness Day on 9/16/06, during September 2006, National Preparedness Month. IC-475 Repair Inquiry

I am having a problem in the PLL section of my IC-475 radio. It doesn't appear to be the classical "bad trimmer capacitor" problem seen in a Google search for Icom Radios. In my case the 30.72mHz Reference Oscillator, Q17, is not operating. I would like to hear direct from anyone else having that problem. I would also like to find out how to access the Icom Service Bulletins/Notes for these radios. I used to be able to go directly to a library of these notes but they seem to have either walled them off from direct access or I am not searching in the right URLs now. -- Roy -- W0SL

Hello the NET: A sequencer is needed to properly transition the PA, IPA, transverter, transceiver, and preamplifier when going from RX to TX and TX to RX. The objective is to add a very short time delay to avoid sending QRO RF power into the preamplifier or into an open, just closing relay contact, like "hot switching" which significantly reduces contact life. I use my IC-706MK2 transceiver with a Lunar Link QRO amp for terrestrial modes. These techniques are applicable to any transceiver, PA, IPA preamp configuration. Just different microphone connectors are used. I apply the same techniques to the FT-847 and the FT-1000MP (IF rig). DEMI offers a sequencer kit at about 35$US, Advanced Receiver Research, SSB, JWM engineering, LNA technologies, W1GHZ, and others also offer non kit versions. The DEMI design uses relays with a 2 amp contact rating, others can be much less. All have their unique variations. I grab the microphone PTT line, before it gets to the radio, route it to the sequencer input, then take the sequenced outputs: DC power to the preamp and bypass RF relays, 2 each SPDT legal limit rated RF relays PTT, ground to TX, to the QRO PA, PTT, ground to TX, to the IPA (or transverter) PTT ground to TX, to the transceiver For RX to TX, preamp and transfer relay power is dropped, bypassing the preamplifier time delay ~ 250 milliseconds in the unmodified DEMI sequencer PA TX is enabled time delay, ~ 250 milliseconds IPA/transverter TX is enabled time delay, ~ 250 milliseconds transceiver TX is enabled for SSb , CW, FM, whatever modulation This timing constant, in the DEMI sequencer, is a RC network and can be modified for a faster time delay. For TX to RX, The sequence is reversed. Some sequencers simultaneously change all output states, without a sequenced delay. Most sequencers allow enough flexibility to configure PTT ground to TX, or PTT +V to TX Mostly with "dry"relay contact closures for a real 0.00V on grounding, unlike a solid state switch. I put the sequencer in a diecast box with a 4 pole multi position mechanical switch to route the sequencer outputs. pole #1 is for local indicator LEDS to show what band I am controlling. pole #2 for the preamp/bypass relay power pole #3 for the PA PTT control pole #4 for the IPA/transverter PTT control The transceiver PTT is always the same, and not switched. All, Marty and Walter seem to be reporting some success through the PCSAT2 10 meter PSK-31 uplink! Here is a preliminary report, and it seems to imply that the frequency is off and so that may be why many people have had no success. WD9EWK AO-51 V/S, Sunday 3 Sept.

Hi again! Another day, another chance (or two) to make more V/S QSOs via AO-51 before the mode change. I woke up a little early this morning, so I decided to combine a quick shopping trip with a trip to a nearby city park that sits on the DM33/DM43 boundary. I was on the AO-51 pass around 1550-1600 UTC from the park with my portable V/S setup, and made 7 QSOs. The most activity I've heard in the 5 AO-51 passes I've tried since Friday. I worked W0LMD (CO), KU7Z (UT), N8BBQ (OH), W2NBJ (MD), KB0JQO (IA), WA4SCA (TN), and AI7W (OR). On the next pass, around 1730 UTC, I was back home and worked W0LMD and KU7Z again - the only ones on there with me. I was in the driveway in front of my house, using the car as my base of operations again. For much of the pass, I left the 2m Yagi laying on the car's roof and took the downconverter in one hand to point and twist it. AO-51's 145.920 MHz receiver is very sensitive, even when my Yagi was pointing parallel to the ground and the satellite was up at 20-30 degrees elevation. Assuming the mode change happens tonight (early Monday, UTC time), this will be the last chance to try V/S for a little while. I made 14 contacts on 5 different passes. I worked two stations on each of 3 passes (W0LMD, KU7Z), and those stations were in 10 different states. When I grow up :-) I would like to set up a proper satellite station at home. Until then, I am happy to be able to set up portable stations and do this stuff. Fun stuff, even if it is 95F/35C outside at the moment. 73! Hi! I took a short drive to a nearby park that straddles 112 degrees West longitude (the DM33/DM43 boundary), and set up for a low western pass for AO-51 around 1808-1818 UTC. Maximum elevation was only 10 degrees, but I wanted to give it a try with my portable V/S setup I've started using. No contacts, but I know I could hear the S-band downlink from about 4 or 5 degrees elevation from that location. I had a lot of time to talk to myself. :-) An impressive thing, the AO-51 S-band downlink. Very easy to hear even at low elevation, and I'm hoping to try at least one pass tonight and one Sunday morning before the mode change. 73! Icom 910 Aux Switching

Keith With the help of K5VH I was already working on your question of aux switching the 910. I'am working towards using my 70 watt amp for TX L-band. Per Toms help I am using a reed relay from radio shack & perf board. I was successful in using the ACC socket, pin 2 & 3 to switch the relay on & off, controlling 12V to my 1270 Mhz amp PTT. Works great when you key the mike & with Wisp it correctly TX's my TNC & 1270 amp automatically. 73 Bruce KG4YEV

Graphical satellite calendar

Here's a work in progress: http://www.qsl.net/kd6pag/Sep2006.gif This shows graphically when passes for SO-50 and AO-51 occur at my QTH for the month of September. Each row corresponds to a day, each square is an hour, and the colored rectangles inside a square (or two) represent a given pass, with the color corresponding to the satellite listed in the legend. The height of the rectangle corresponds to the maximum elevation of the pass. If a rectangle is at the top of a square, then it's largely an eastern pass, and if at the bottom of a square, then it's a western pass. If it's not quite at the top or bottom, then the maximum elevation is not exactly in the east or west; for example, if AOS is in the north and LOS is in the east (instead of the south). So one can quickly glance at the graphical calendar and see which are good passes to try to work in the next few days. It may also be helpful for rovers when planning trips, to maximize the number of passes while in a given area. Spouses who might not be able to read satellite predictions could look at the graph and have an idea of when you might want to be busy. So far, the predictions are generated using LINUX SatTrack (perhaps edited by hand, for example, to account for AO-51's schedule) and fed into a Perl program which produces the .gif files. Satellite on the Moon

Icom 910H aux switching

Hi I wish to switch my amp and pre amps when using the Icom 910H Is their any way of having a switching line the changes when the rig goes into TX I have read the manual and checked the sockets on the back of the rig but can't see an aux switching line or voltage change or anything that I could use. Keith: My 2 pence worth is that the best way to do these things is with an external sequencer. The ARRL Handbook has a simple one, plus you can get them ready-made from DB6NT, Advanced Receiver Research, and I think W1GHZ sells some on eBay from time to time. The idea: you PTT the sequencer (footswitch or equivalent) and the sequencer unkeys the preamp, keys the amp, and then keys the rig, in that order. That way everything is where it should be when you speak/key the rig. If you have the rig put everything else in TX then the rig can be transmitting before/as the relays are switching over, which is a guaranteed way of replacing your preamp transistors and/or relays someday. That also implies no VOX with preamps. WD9EWK's first time on AO-51 V/S tonight

Hi! I've had an AIDC 3731 downconverter, one converted by K5GNA, for just over a year. I haven't used it until tonight, when I had some free time in the evening. I took it and a bunch of stuff to my stepson's Boy Scout meeting (a church in grid DM43ap, northeast Phoenix), and hoped to work an AO-51 pass while he was in his meeting. After a storm blew through Phoenix (it kept me off an SO-50 pass around 0220 UTC), the skies cleared enough to make a try at the AO-51 pass around 0320 UTC. I set up my station, and waited for the satellite. TX was my IC-W32A HT at 5W, turning off the 70cm side of the radio, into my Arrow Antennas 2m/70cm handheld Yagi. RX was with the downconverter into a Yaesu VX-2R (I could disable TX on this radio, to protect the downconverter - plus it had an attenuator). I had a 6dB attenuator in the coax line, along with the VX-2R's attenuator function, so the S-meter wasn't moving much until I heard the satellite. Once I found the downlink, it wasn't hard to keep up with it through the pass. I let the downconverter with its dipole and corner reflector sit on the car's roof, and had a splitter from the VX-2R's speaker-mic jack to feed an earpiece and my Sony digital recorder. I heard one QSO finish up, then I made a call. Angelo N5UXT in New Orleans heard me and I worked him first, then I was called by WA4EWV. I heard a W9HT toward the end of the pass, but could not work that station. I could follow the Doppler on the RX signal well enough, and every so often the signal would take a dip and then come back up. If I held the downconverter and twisted it, I could get the signal back up, but most of the time I just set it on the roof in the general direction of AO-51 and held the Yagi in one hand and a speaker-mic into my IC-W32A with the other hand. I really wish I had a small camera or camcorder with me, to get a photo of my "station", but at least I have an audio recording of the pass with my 2 contacts. I am impressed with how well the downconverter worked, and with AO-51 in this V/S configuration. This was the first time I did anything that used a ham frequency above 23cm. I'm hoping to have some time Friday morning to work an AO-51 pass and try this again, but if that's not possible I want to work some passes this weekend before the mode change. This was fun! 73! Hi to the list, due to change the antenna cables, I would like to know which is the better one at least price For the Satellites activates. Unfortunately I have to use a long descent. I want also install my old 23 elements antenna for the 1,2 GHz. So the cable should be all for the satellites activates and should be for 2 meters 70 centimetres 23 centimetres I would like also to get a Mast preamplifier for the 23 centimetres. I already have the Mast preamplifier for the 2 meters and the 70 centimetres. They are both from Dressler and both has the EVV Interface. greetings I would like to report very poor reception of echo even with an 8 element yagi and an 18 Db preamp. I assume the downlink power is real flea power for battery charging or other testing. After 2 years of pleading with amsat, the downlink power is still a mystery. It is not shown on the colaradosatellite telemetry graphs (TX B) or the amsat website, after repeated requests here and elsewhere I'll assume it is being held secret for some reason. There has been a tremendous lack of technical reporting on ECHO. I realize people are very busy but time should be taken to educate the amsat community. 73, patrick N2OEQ 32323

Mobile QSO on VO-52

Hi all On my lunch break i was able to make a QSO with VE3BSB James in his car running. It was my first QSO with a mobile station on a Transponder type satellite in SSB. I was testting an old KLM 2M 14C on the downlink and i was using a 7.5' dish on the uplink. The power setting was at 0 on my FT-847. The hic with low TX power make us often unhearded by some stations and i have to often crank up my power to be able to make the other party hear me. But on this QSO i was able to keep my power at 0 or near that as the 847 still transmit some wattage my last preamp knows it... ECHO duty cycle

hello again- Does anyone know what percentage of a day or orbit the echo transmitters are ON? I've been thinking about the battery depth of discharge issue. Being that they are as a whole 4 amp hours, a 10 percent discharge would equate to about 1.6 amps for one quarter of an orbit on-time. According to drew, the transmitters are drawing about .8 amps. I hope people are viewing depth of discharge as a function of amp-hours more than voltage ( I realize also important ). Any comments are welcome. Thanks, pat n2oeq

Hi Gary, Yes the USB to serial adapters work, but they are not all equal. I have found the ones with the FTDI chip and drivers to be the most reliable. In my computer upgrade I installed a USB to serial port and also got a PCI to dual serial port card (very cost effective). The new computer came with no serial ports, but I am using three serial ports for digital work. First one for 9600 bps modem to WiSP software. Second for SatPC32 to LVB tracker and rotor control Third for SatPC32 to FT-847 for Doppler tracking. Granted, I had to install/uninstall theUSB/serial driver about 8 times before it worked. The PCI card with two serial ports worked the first time. Digital sats with less

Hello All, While re-configuring my digital station the last couple of weeks I have had the opportunity to try some things I normally wouldn't. I was surprised the last couple of days to find that I could work GO-32 with less that I expected. I encourage you all to try 9600 Digital satellite operation. GO-32 transmits with about 1W of power and is fairly easy to receive and decode. My minimal system is: inexpensive, 10 element 70cm yagi (Diamond A430S10); no preamp; 50 feet Flex 4XL coax; FT-847; MFJ 1270C with added 9600 bps modem board; WiSP Pacsat protocol software; 15 W into 50 feet of LMR400 coax; 4 element, 2M yagi (M2 2M4). Antennas are mounted at a fixed 25 degree angle, AZ only rotor. Setting all this up and getting it operational isn't trivial as you have to have a number of things that all must work together, but certainly do-able and a good challenge to get a digital station operational. Now I always recommend a preamp for digital operation, and I only decoded about 1/3-1/2 of the digital data I usually get using the same system with a preamp. When AO-51 is in digital mode and transmitting at 300mW, you need the preamp. Notes: 1) Use the 145.890 uplink frequency for GO-32, SatPC32 defaults to the 145.850 uplink and I couldn't get that one to work 2) There is no telemetry data from GO-32 3) AO-51 will be in digital mode again Sep 18, so get operational on GO-32 and ready to get telemetry data from AO-51 4) You can use a soundcard 9600 bps software decoder, but must have a way to send the decoded data into a serial port (or USB to serial) to make much sense of it. TlmECHO or WiSP will do the protocol conversion. 5) TlmECHO program is a good program to start with, it will show the digital data (even GO-32), without having to do a major setup as with WiSP, plus you will be ready to get the AO-51 telemetry 6) DCD led on does not mean that you are correctly decoding the data, just that you are receiving a signal. These data packets are all or nothing, if your modem misreads 1 bit out of a packet the entire packet is trashed. 7) Keep the signal centered (Doppler correction), if your radio has a Discriminator meter just keep the signal centered. I notice quite a data drop when the Discriminator reading is a bar or two off center. 8) I wouldn't recommend using anything other than a small, tracking beam for receiving 9600 bps digital signals Gould, WA4SXM

Has anyone tried working FO-29 with egg beaters or other omni directional array? I have plenty of power and a good preamp. FO29 on small antennas

Yes, no problem...15 watts up the pipe is ok for most of an FO29 pass.. Go to: http://home.san.rr.com/doguimont/uploads/ and see Quadfil.zip. Easy to build, and all measurements there for 435, 2M, and wx channels... I mount the 2M/435 pair at about 45°, and rotate in AZ only with a TV rotor. Actually the segment from 144.360 to 144.370 is widely used by FSK441 and it would keep almost the 50% of the uplink on the trasponders since the TX period are consecutives. Even international contests are not so much on this band, sats will be capable to reach people doing local contests (about 2-3 each weekend on region 1) with a lot of problems in order to work sats during the weekends !
