ARISS APRS Testing

All, The ARISS team has been working very closely with NASA and ESA to identify potential ARISS radio anomaly causes and resolve the radio issues that were observed after the EVA (spacewalk) conducted on January 27. During this spacewalk, cabling was installed to support the commissioning of the Bartolomeo attached payload capability mounted on the Columbus module. Part of this cabling rerouted the cabling of the ARISS antenna on Columbus to the ARISS radio system. Through a great deal of coordination with NASA and ESA, ARISS will be conducting a set of APRS tests to determine the operational use of the ARISS radio system in Columbus through employment of three different cabling configurations. Over the next couple of days, ARISS will be performing a series of tests using our APRS capability through the standard 145.825 MHz APRS frequency. The crew will be periodically shutting down the radio and swapping cables so ARISS can troubleshoot the radio system and the cabling. ARISS is unsure of the exact swap times as it will be dependent upon the crew's availability. We expect these tests to start no earlier than 1600 UTC on March 2 and run through sometime on March 3. We cannot guarantee that these troubleshooting tests will resolve the radio issue. But we encourage ARISS APRS operations in this time span. Additionally, a contingency task has been approved for an EVA planned for this Friday March 5 if these tests are unsuccessful. This EVA task would return the ARISS cabling to the original configuration prior to the January 27 EVA. Being a contingency task means the crew will only be perform the activity if time allows. So there is no guarantee that this EVA will be conducted on Friday. We ask to please not send any "No contact" e-mails or social media responses as this will overwhelm the ARISS team. But if you definitely hear the packet system working or are able to connect through it, let us know the Date, Time and Grid Square of the occurrence. Trying to figure out which birds are currently flying that have active packet capability. Information seems to be outdated from what I can find.... Anyone know when ISS will address their packet/APRS issue? Going to dial up the 145.825 on my discone with the preamp and see if I hear anything....SATPC only had I think two listed showing the packet freq.... ARISS News Release No. 21-15 Dave Jordan, AA4KN ARISS PR aa4kn(a)amsat.org FORIMMEDIATE RELEASE ARISS ContactScheduled for Students Sponsored by Peace Corps Moldova and a Consortium ofEducational Institutions, Chisinau, Republic of Moldova March 1, 2021—AmateurRadio on the International Space Station (ARISS) has received scheduleconfirmation for an ARISS radio contact with astronauts. ARISS is the groupthat puts together special amateur radio contacts between students around theglobe and crew members with ham radio licenses on the International Space Station (ISS). This will be a multipoint telebridge contact via amateur radio and studentsfrom various schools in the Republic of Moldova. Students will take turnsasking their questions of Astronaut Mike Hopkins, amateurradio call sign KF5LJG. Englishis the language that will be used for this contact. The downlink frequency for this contact is145.800 MHz. ARISSteam member David Payne, using call sign NA7V in Portland, OR will serve as therelay amateur radio station. The ARISS radio contact isscheduled for March 3, 2021 at 3:09 pm EET (Chisinau, Republic of Moldova), (13:09 UTC, 8:09 am EST, 7:09am CST, 6:09 am MST and 5:09 am PST). Peace Corps is an educational organization in Moldova,promoting economic and civic development with a particular focus on developinglocal resources in rural and suburban communities. Another focus of MPC is to provide youth inMoldovan villages with access to STEM opportunities and build capacity amonglocal teachers/librarians to implement STEM activities in their curricula. Packet IGATE for sats

Seems to be a shortage of sats supporting Packet but have a spare Raspberry Pi and a spare 2 meter rig collecting dust. Any thoughts as to need or justification? Was originally thinking for ISS and optimistic they will get their packet and APRS system back online. Have read there has continued to be a shortage of IGATES....but difficult to track just how much packet is going on. Was considering a Comet GP3...relatively low gain dual band antenna which I would suspect has a quite vertical lobe...or even tilting it around 30 degrees...not sure which direction would be optimum. Somewhere around 25 watts less coax loss.... Is this a worthwhile project? Or should I find something else to do with my Pi? Comments are appreciated! 73 de Tim, K4SHF
