FCC Part 97 Report and Order - ISS

The recent FCC Report and Order (R&O) has a couple of changes relating to Amateur Radio and the ISS. ---- The FCC has issued a Report and Order (R&O) to amend Part 97 of the Amateur Radio Service rules, see http://hraunfoss.fcc.gov/edocs_public/attachmatch/FCC-06-149A1.doc The changes to the Amateur Radio Service rules are: . revise the operating privileges of amateur radio operators to allow more spectrum in four currently-authorized amateur service HF bands to be used for voice communications; . permit auxiliary stations to transmit on additional amateur service bands; . permit amateur stations to transmit spread spectrum communications on the 1.25 meter (m) band; . permit amateur stations to retransmit communications from the International Space Station; . permit amateur service licensees to designate the amateur radio club to receive their call sign in memoriam; . prohibit an applicant from filing more than one application for a specific vanity call sign; . eliminate certain restrictions on equipment manufacturers that are no longer necessary; . permit amateur radio stations operating in Alaska and surrounding waters more flexibility in providing emergency communications; and . remove certain restrictions in the amateur service license examination system that are no longer necessary. ---- 73 Trevor M5AKA --------------- Daily Amateur Radio RSS News: http://www.southgatearc.org/ Email your news items to: editor at southgatearc.org News On Your Website: http://www.southgatearc.org/rss/index.htm News On Your PC: http://www.southgatearc.org/rss/newsreader.htm Upload Your News: http://www.southgatearc.org/news/your_news.htm --------------- ___________________________________________________________ The all-new Yahoo! Steve, Are the elements mounted differently? That could explain the change in length. If they are mounted in the same mechanical fashion, how about the baluns? Are they different? PCSAT-1 (NO-44) Special Event Continues

PCSAT-1 remains fully operational as a digipeater on 145.825 up and down using the aliases of PCSAT-1, ARISS, RELAY, WIDE and WIDEn-N and TRACEn-N. Users are welcome to use it and we are seeing about 80 people a day. PCSAT-1 was resetting to W3ADO-1 a few times (the bad default power negative condition), but as long as the SIDE-B system does not reset at the same time, then PCSAT-1 is recoverable and useable. But as long as people do not use the W3ADO-1 path, but use the other ones above instead, then we should be able to keep PCSAT-1 alive for a few more weeks. Pseudo Keps for the moon

Hello, I am using a satellite tracking software for tracking the moon but my pseudo keps was out of date. I'm looking for pseudo keps for the moon because MOONKEPS.EXE doesn't work well for year 2006. Does anyone have other making program or the pseudo keps for the moon? tia, Isao / JM1WBB

WiFi mitigation

Dear friends, MCM Electronics currently has a sale on a WiFi base station for $18.95. See: http://www.mcminone.com/product.asp?catalog%5Fname=MCMProducts&product%5Fid… This is a very basic Linksys unit. But, at this price, it might make sense to buy a few, put them in your house as close to your neighbors as possible, and set them all to channel 1 (which overlaps the ham band at 2.4 GHz.) This may help encourage your neighbors to use other channels. When you want to operate on S-band, just turn them off. They may also be useful if you want to set up a very basic WIFi network and you don't care about any extra features. 73, Tony AA2TX

I ordered a new RX filter before taking the 847 apart, hence the delay getting back with my fix. What I found was several loose screws on a couple of the boards in the 847. In fact the only screws that were consistently tight were the one's that I had removed/replaced when installing the Symec wide IF mod 5 years ago, I didn't open the bottom of the radio up at that time, so I don't know how long they may have been loose. After I buttoned up , all is now well, full duplex is back on FM. And I have much better RX on Ao-7 SSB, thanks to the 2.0 SSB Inrad filter ! It's about time I installed the filter, my 847 is over 8 years old. So it appears the fix was a loose semi-grounded board, most notably the AF-CNTL unit board. Eagle's New Design

I have to say that I have been very critical of the Eagle development team with their plans for the bird. At the time I did not agree with their recommendations nor did I agree with their decisions. I WAS WRONG. While I am quite relieved with the new plan for Eagle, which includes a linear transponder for V/U and L/S along with the new digital "Advanced Communications Payload", there is no excuse for my previous words. Contrary to popular belief, the satellite builders and the Eagle team are not out to just build whatever they want but rather to build what will work. There is no way that they would spend the many hours it takes to build all the pieces and parts it takes to make a satellite to send up something that no one will use or that won't work. I don't know if EaglePedia has been updated with the latest and greatest information but I was very impressed with Bob McGwier's presentation on the latest configuration of Eagle. If you weren't able to attend the annual symposium then please keep an eye out on the website (amsat.org) for the latest and greatest information on the project. Take a look at the new information and then make sure you let everyone know that you support Eagle by going to http://www.amsat.org/amsat-new/eagle/#donating and donating. It is very important that we all pitch in and help fund this project so that construction can move forward. From my understanding, we raised quite a bit of money at the symposium but we need more. Help the amateur satellite community and join the President's Club and/or donate directly to the Eagle project.
