The next generation of astronauts will not have any emotions and no sex. No more love affair to interfere just plain bits and bytes logics. How much is enough?.

POWER. How much is enough? . La2qaa Feb 2006. There could be many answers to that question but the correct one regarding amateur satellite communications is ... "Just enough to maintain effective communications". For instance, how many people reduce their power as the satellite they're operating on approaches TCA ... (time of closest approach) ... a good operator will, because they know that the use of excessive power is *not* good for the transponder. Case in point. When AO-7 first comes up over the horizon you'll probably need "X" amount of power to communicate effectively. However, after 10-15 minutes, as the range decreases you'll find that a 3dB ... (50%) ... reduction of power will have no effect whatsoever on the signal. A *VERY* sensitive S-meter might show a difference but your ears certainly won't. Hands up those that actually regulate their power to maintain effective communications ... (No, I didn't think so) ... you should try it sometime, you might get a surprise. By the way, we do know ... (don't we?) ... why most satellites have a beacon?. One of the principal reason, after telemetry, for a beacon is so that you can regulate your power to be consistent with that beacon, it's your reference. No signal should EVER be more powerful than the beacon. Naturally, it will also serve as your propagation reference. ......................................................................................................................................... For those cases where a beacon isn't operative (read AO-7) you can use VE2DWE's sensible suggestion of tuning up and down the band and regulating your power to be consistent with known non-alligator stations. Alligator = all mouth and no ears. Remember the old adage, if you can't hear them you can't work them. I have need for a time programmable, audio recording program, for Windows. Googling presents too may options. Any one able to offer suggestions on a good, reliable and tested system. Thank You. Colin VK5HI

This is an area I found Linux to offer more useful options (cron, shell scripts and a command line audio recorder). When I was redording under Windows (which the majority of the sat recordings at http://vkradio.com/sat.html were done with), I was using CoolEdit to schedule the recordings. It worked, but there was a bug in it, which meant it was off by an hour during DST months. Once I sorted that quirk out, I found it useful - I'd set it to record automatically and then wander down the road to work the birds. :) As I said, Linux has a better means of scheduling, and if one is clever, you could use something like Predict to kick the recording off at the right time. :) I used to record a newscast every week, and the system pretty much set the timing for everyone else to follow. :) Even had a facility where I could stop and process a recording with a TV style remote control (thanks to lircd and a home brewed IR receiver) :).

CAT doppler and the IC-910

Hi all, Just wondering what everyone is using for CAT doppler control of their 910's I was using Orbitron and WISPdde but I cant seem to find a happy combination of settings in WISPdde without it throwing an error about being unable to cancel the split command and then it kinda works until I touch the tune knob to track a station and then it all starts to go pear shaped! S/W versions are Orbitron 3.71 and WispDDE 4.3 Any help greatly appreciated. Status of Cute 1.7 ?

Hi listened for Cute 1.7 on the 21:30 pass in range IO92 Just a strong carrier on the expected frequency. Lots of Doppler shift. Signal dissapeared at the predicted LOS. Is cute 1.7 in trouble? 73 John G7HIA

Is anyone using one of these with it's diversity function for reception of sats? Seems like for those of us that don't want to deal with circularly polarized antennas, we could have two downlink receive antennas at 90 degree angles to one another.... For sat use alone, it's overkill but as an additional duty, would it provide a good receive link for the current "easy sats" as well as for future HEO systems? 73 de Tim, K4SHF FM04

Any interested in a MODERATED AMSAT-BB?

Hello fellow AMSAT-BBers- I am a firm believer in Human rights and free speech, but I also do not appreciate the politically oriented, off-topic posts that occur frequently on this list. I get enough junk email! As an attempt to keep down the noise, I propose a moderated list. This list will contain FACTUAL information and discussions related to Amateur radio satellites. Posts based on personal political and religious opinions will not be permitted. ALL are welcome to join the list with the agreement that their posts will be subject to moderation. It is even possible that the moderated list can subscribe to the AMSAT-BB list (with the caveat that the AMSAT-BB messages will be moderated before showing up on the new list). If there is enough interest, we can organize this option, and select a GROUP of moderators. Please drop me a note on your opinion of this list. 73s, Dave N0TGD

People- One more time---- Most Hams know the way to deal with someone who is interrupting a repeater with continuous garbage is TO IGNORE him or her. Pretty soon they get bored and leave. Why is it so difficult for so many people on this bb to understand Monsieur Leblanc is playing with you? He apparently loves the attention and isn't reluctant to make some of the inflammatory statements he has posted recently and in the past. JUST DON'T RESPOND TO HIS IRRITATING REMARKS; IGNORE HIM. Sooner or later he will tire of his game. If you are so irritated with is remarks you feel you must respond take a moment and consider the source! blocking/banning only works on the current email address. How many addresses does yahoo, hotmail and google allow one person to get? This could change with each posting and would drive moderators crazy. The only solution is personal filtering and that's it. I have not seen a post from luc in months.
