Excellent advice Tom. Let me add a few things if you don't mind. If you cannot implement full doppler computer tuning, the next best practice is to tune the higher frequency, in this case the uplink. Use full duplex and the minimum power required. VO-52 is quite sensitive and overloads easily; expect this to be the norm on FD. Don't forget AO-7. It could be in either Mode U/V (aka Mode B) or Mode V/A (aka Mode A). FO-29 may also be back in time for FD, we just don't know. I expect the majority of points to be made on the transponder satellites; please observe the one QSO per FM repeater rule (1 via AO-27 and SO-50, and 1 each via the L/U and V/U repeaters on AO-51). For the true diehard satellite operator there is AO-16! The 1200 baud BPSK downlink is easily decoded with MixW soundcard software, and the uplink requires Manchester FSK at 1200 baud. This is the tough part. QSOs can be completed via digipeating through the satellite, but the BBS is non-operative. GO-32 is a good bet too if the BBS is up and running. AO-7 report.

A study of the AO-7 eclipse charts for the last 3 years shows a progression toward non-elipse orbits in late 2007 - 2008. In effect, this means that AO-7 in all probability will not change mode unless anything untoward happens. It also means that we appear to have a permanent mode-B LEO linear transponder for the forseeable future ... providing operators follow the recommended operating proceedure. Please *do* decrease your power as the satellite approaches TCA to avaoid FM'ing. This not only helps the satellite, it helps the other operators in the passband. Don't be fooled by propagation anomolies. The mode-B transponder is working well and will continue to do so providing the alligators go and play somewhere else. Under normal circumstances you do NOT !! need a lot of power. Please use only the necessary to maintain adequate communications. If you can't copy people adequately, you should improve your receiving capabilities rather than increasing your uplink power ... remember, aluminium is cheap and it's a lot more user friendly to everyone concerned .... with perhaps the exception of your neighbours. ARRL dual moxon turnstyle project questions

I'm working on building the ARRL dual moxon antennas, but the article isn't very detailed where I'd like it to be and a little over detailed in some places I wish it weren't. If you want to look, this is the URL (http://www.arrl.org/members-only/tis/info/pdf/0108038.pdf) 1. What are acceptable ways to terminate the paralled 75 ohm matching sections? I'm thinking now I'll just terminate them to a couple of ring terminals attached to the mast rather than terminating each one with a bnc and teeing them. 2. How do I feed the 70cm and 2m with the same feedline? should I just tee a 50 ohm line to two equal length 50 ohm sections? 3. This is more of a comment... I'm wagering the uhf version doesn't work at all... measurements are given to the hundreth of an inch - and then you solder a big ring lug to the end of it! 4. Are there any other good techniques for setting the distance between the reflector and driver besides heat shrink? The 70cm antenna is using #14 galvanized wire, and I can't think of anything small enough to hold them in place well. I found that the 3/16 rod for the 2m moxon will work great with 1/4" nylon tubing. Thanks for any feedback - I'll probably have more questions.. I'm sitting here with a half-made 70cm turnstyle, and am about to start on the 2m version. Whew - I'm beginning to think that a $1000 investment in rotators and antennae isn't such a bad idea after all! Scott Wilson NW2S

AMSAT IRC Channel on Freenode

A friend of mine and I were chatting on freenode IRC and was wondering if there was an AMSAT room. When we checked there was not so we unofficially established one to see how much interest there would be. This could be a low-bandwidth back channel that AMSATers worldwide could join into and chat in real time about satellites, during passes get feedback, or people could come to get assistance when they are having problems. I know the IRC channels are being used for the same reason for other projects, why not AMSAT? If you already have an IRC client come join us at irc.freenode.net and join channel #amsat. Drew, It is my understanding from recent correspondance with W3GEY/VK3GEY Jan King ... (Jan 'built' AO-7) ... and earlier correspondence with N1JEZ Mike Seguin (AO-7 control operator) when I first posted the mail re: the timer last year .... that the timer is completely random when the satellite comes out of eclipse and since there are no imminent occurances of eclipse as far as I can see, I assume the mode will not change unless anything 'ontoward' occurs to upset the electronics. High power *can* affect how the control systems behave ... (obviously, I'm not going to mention the command parameters or the power required). If my assumption is wrong, I stand corrected. In either case, listening to the regular operators will confirm the mode. Fred: Let me join the chorus of well-wishers for your group's project. In my opinion, it is an excellent one to undertake: the triple-cubesat design seems just about right in terms of volume; and by documenting and open-sourcing your work, you will provide an fine basis for others who might want follow in your footsteps. I think especially of future collaborations between amateurs and university programs, where the amateurs provide the comms expertise, and the university funds a research project, at whose end the comms. are used for amateurs, much like Delfi C3. I note also the Sat on a PCB concept at http://wiki.amsat.dk/index.php I hope in contrast that your project will seriously consider a linear transponder. I think that the clever social engineering of the VO-52 folks has proven that a linear transponder can successfully be shared around the globe by FM users where necessary and SSB/CW users in places where this is a more sensible use of the device. 73, Bruce VE9QRP

Hello folks, I would like to request copies of any telemetry recordings of Sputnik 12/13, I know it was killed by radiation while flying over the South Atlantic Anomaly during a Solar storm. I am seeking any telemetry recordings of this spacecrafts CW signal on HF 29 MHz. When the spacecraft was alive, I wrote a telemetry decoder for Russian Sputniks. I only managed to make 2 small datasets using the CWget and my RSdashboard before it went and got itself cooked. This is a request for historical reasons, the data and software I want to put online at QSL.net. Measuring the ADC output of a sound card

Hi, I am fiddling with a new sound card, and am wondering if there is a bit of _Windows_ software which will read the output of a standard audio device, and present the data directly? You can almost do this by looking at an FFT display, and looking for clipping, but I was looking for a more direct, and quantifiable reading. Programs using AE4JY's DLL core will tell you when you are overdriving it, but that is pass/fail. 73s, Alan WA4SCA

PCSAT (W3ADO-1) is operational on all passes when it is in the mid-day sun. That means if there are any passes within a few hours of your local noon, then it is probably useable for a few packets. You can see its downlink on the http://pcsat.aprs.org web page at any time. Checking there, I see many many users and packets over the last 24 hours... Enjoy!. Sat prediction + Windows Vista

For a lot of my satellite time I have used NOVA for predicting sat passes on a WinXP laptop in my vehicle. I have been required by work to go to a Windows Vista computer and have been unable to get Vista and Nova to work together. What are people running on Windows Vista for prediction without an internet connection (so I can not use AMSAT's predict website). Mike Kb8zgl

August AO-51 schedule is up!

I posted the new schedule for August late last night. This time around we had _seven_ specific requests and filled all of them. There are several grid expeditions and cruises that will be on AO-51 in August, both in North America and Europe, that requested "normal" V/U repeater mode. We've also scheduled some L/U and L/S time for the adventurous. Eclipses are getting shorter this month, so expect to see the downlink power move up in response. The prefixes were ... (in random order) ... K9, G1, DM, F3, EA, LA, UA0, RA3, GJ, I6, HA, OH. The Stateside stations were ... K3SZH, N5AFV, K9QHO, K9CIS, K9HF, W7AIT, WA6KYR. Hi All, I'm going to try some QSO's on AO-51 at EN67 (the northern tip of Michigan's Upper Peninsula) on 31 July around 1320 and 1458 UTC. Not sure if this is a rare grid square, but thought I'd give it a try. I'm new at this and am only using an Arrow antenna and a Kenwood handheld. So please be patient. So if you hear KA8QCU. Hello Group, Regarding the AO-7 Resource Page log. I was asked what I meant by my earlier remark of "sloppy". Please allow me to explain. I think we all agree that for 'data' to be valid and meaningful it has to be 'entered' correctly. If not, the results will give a false picture. An example: 30th-July-07 at 09:05 on orbit 49661 station ****** worked station ****** AO-7 on orbit 49661 at 09:05 was in fact over Antarctica so neither ****** nor ****** were in the footprint of AO-7. Therefore, the actual QSO would be valid but the timing would be way off ... thereby giving a false overall impression. It is not expected that one logs the 'exact' time of each contact since it is possible to work several stations on the same pass ... each to be entered on the same line ... but it would be advantagous if stations would log their contacts with the correct data. It's perfectly OK to log the contacts 'later' if you're busy ... but please do enter the data correctly. If you make a mistake, you can edit your entry by clicking on the hourglass to edit it. RS-22 beacon is very strong

Dear all, Encouraged by the RS-15 results earlier today I also wanted to try to receive RS-22. I downloaded the lastest keps and tuned a few KHz above 435.352 MHz. Already a few seconds before AOS I could hear the FM data signal. Signals became very strong - stronger as the AO51 435.3MHz downlink. During the middle of the pass I switched to 145.818 but did not hear anything. At the time NOVA calculated max elevation, frequency was exactly 435.352MHz (in line with web documentation). Almost the entire pass an FM data signal was present (documentation says this is typically done while flying in range of Russian command). Only at the end of the pass the beacon switched to CW telemetry, but at a much lower rate as earlier samples I found on the internet. Distance between each packet (packet lengths varied from 5..7 seconds in length) was quite large (13 seconds).
