New Rotator X/Y as opposed to Azimuth/Elevation SPX X-Y Rotor I am thinking of purchasing a new tracking system design, which uses an unusual way of pointing the antenna. I was wondering if anyone else has used this product or even the nearly identical non XY model? http://www.rfhamdesign.com/products/spx-light-antenna-rotator/spx-x-y-rotor… Youtube video at the bottom does not work. The benefits of it are supposedly better/faster positioning at the elevation peak, due to the "two elevation, one over another" design. There is a good description of why it might be good here: Scroll down to conclusions http://www.microwavejournal.com/articles/2937-selecting-a-pedestal-for-trac… There are other benefits: 630 Euro plus shipping including USB computer interface (cheaper than Yaesu) Fast motor movement (50 seconds for 360 degrees) Can be compatable with Yaesu GS232 protocol or SPID driver Downsides Low strength 80nM only suitable for light antennas (such as the arrow etc) Brand new model may have bugs or weaknesses 1 degree max position accurancy sensed by reed switch. Not 0.1 degrees as per some expensive systems. Cheaper computer interface/features compared to more expensive models. Not available from anywhere else (yet) 3 weeks minimum delivery time Strange to understand design Strange to understand config. The az & el degrees are converted to XY positions. The main reason for taking the risk, is I want to do some small dish tests for HAMTV from the ISS, and even most expensive tracking systems, are too slow at fast peak elevations, particularly with narrow beamwidth dishes. i would concur with everything the first responder said. Cranky I love mine for satellites. I've used it since I bought in new many years ago. CAT works great but it does require a less typical null modem cable. Mine is completely unmodified and I really should buy some filters for it, but despite the filters I've worked tons of DX with it on HF. Does it compare to my Flex5000....no! But it doesn't cost that much. The only thing I could recommend more at this point would be a fully loaded Flex5000a with the 2nd RX and V/U module. It works very well for satellites with satpc32 and has the added advantage of the panadapter where you can see signals including your downlink. As for repairs, the only repair I had to have done with my 847 was the on-off power switch. I should add that I also had a TS-2000 for a time but sold it in favor of keeping my 847 largely because of one or two features, the primary one being that unlike the 2000 the Yaesu powers your external preamps through the coax with no problems. I found that other rigs that don't offer is feature just add additional issues, though to be fair some guys prefer separating their preamps in terms of DC power. So that's my vote, get a good 847 if you can find one. 73 Rick W2JAZ

I've never used a 736r, so I can't compare, but I presently have an 847. It is an excellent satellite rig but not nearly as good as my TS-690s was on HF, (I chase DX) However I've been learning to adapt and still bagging new ones. Plus the extra 50 watts on 6m is nice. I also found it is not nearly as user friendly with my MFJ external tuner... I have to adjust power on the rig before hitting the tune button on the tuner. With my kenwood, it was one button tuning right on the rig. Some of it's quirks... it is prone to having problems with the power switch going out. Mine has lost the 'catch' and won't stay closed, others have had the contacts burn out. I have mine 'jumpered' in behind the switch and I turn power on and off at the supply. Some have an issue of low headphone volume, but that mostly is because it's designed for low impedance headphones, not the 32 ohms ones commonly available today. If you plan to use computer control the very earliest models did not have bi-directional serial ports, but that can be checked by the serial number... I believe it's a small number of rigs. Google is your friend for information on that. =^) For satellite, the named sat memories are nice and it has built in preamps or it can power remote preamps. The extra filters are a little hard to come by and can be expensive.I've only acquired a CW filter. Their are no birdies that I am aware of. The rig was designed for satellite and that remains it's forte. I had both rigs on my bench until my 690 developed a problem. Once I got used to the 847 on HF, it was nice not to have to switch my key back and forth or have two sets of headphones. What I am saying is, if you want a great sat rig and an adequate HF rig, it is a fine choice. But if HF is your primary goal and satellite is an after thought, keep your 736 and get another HF rig. Prices run $800 to $1000 for a used 847. I paid $1000 for mine on a local purchase in very nice condition and sold the external speaker that came with it. Prices have dropped in the last year or so and I wouldn't pay more than $900 shipped unless it had the FC-20 external tuner with it. They can be found for $800, but consider the condition. These rigs are coming up on 20 years and many parts are reaching the point of becoming unobtainium. - Bottom line though... outside of a IC-910 or 9100, it's probably the best satellite rig you can own. (personally, I like the layout better than the 910/9100s) If I had the money, I'd buy a spare. Yaesu FT-847 as a satellite rig?

Hi folks, My HF transceiver, and ageing Yaesu FT767GX, is slowly dieing. After 22 years in my service (and a few more with the prior owners), the memory battery has failed. The rig still works, but gets a factory reset whenever turned off. Annoying. I have an opportunity to pick up a clean Kenwood TS-870-AT, which I expect would make for a fine replacement, but I've always thought that the Yaesu FT-847 would be a better choice. My current satellite rig is a Yaesu FT-736R, which I really like. As a satellite rig, is the 847 significantly better than the 736R? Does it have any annoying "personallity" traits (e.g. Kenwood TS-2000's 148.800 birdie)? Before I pass up the Kenwood 870 (and while there's a Yaseu 847 on eBay...), should I jump on one or the other, or muddle along with what I have until something better turns up? Thanks, Greg KO6TH

FUNcube Warehouse SSL Certificate and other changes

The certificate has now expired and all access should be done through http://warehouse.funcube.org.uk We are doing other work to allow download of larger chunks of csv formatted data for end users. free sat ants and memory lane

I dismantled my satellite station at FM29PE in Ocean View NJ today. I worked one more AO07 pass to make my last contacts with my Oscar class station at FM29PE. I operated the sats continuously from this location since 1997. It was a great 17 years. I just went through my sat contacts. 16,386 contacts, 82 countries( I should of got up in the middle of the night more often for the rare DX that was on AO40, I'm sure I would of got sat DXCC), I'm not sure how many grids, but it's a lot J , made two way contacts on over 16 different satellites, and space to earth voice contacts on three different orbiting stations, not to mention all the wonderful time I had working all the PACSATS. Well one moves on, I plan on living in Florida near the beach in the winter and Ocean City NJ almost on the beach in the summer, locations that aren't compatible with large high gain antennas on any band. The final disposition of my sat antenna system was to give the large beams away to a good home, and keep some components to build a portable station with the Cushcraft AOP-1 antenna set that I purchased several years ago 'new in the box', that I kept squirreled away. I also saved the rotor, pre-amps, 2.4 gig stuff, a 1.2gig 70 watt amp, IC-9100,and some hardline to hook it up. So I will be back on the birds sort of serious in the near future. The station I'm going to put together will be portable enough to be taken down and moved in my Honda Pilot from NJ to FL while we snowbird it, without upsetting my wife too much J. I want to mention that the last three stations I worked from my FM29PE location today were.. F4EJW, it was good to work just one more DX station. KC9ELU, Good to work you again Mike, we will be back shortly. K3SZH, It was very fitting to work Joe, everyone's favorite AO07 op as the last contact, thanks Joe. We will be on some SO-50 passes, and of course I will keep the ISS digi up that is located at my other home we're keeping in NJ. How you wind it

How you wind a coil makes a BIG difference. Ever wonder why your projects don’t work like the authors? Im winding 42 turns onto a 1 Megohm 1/4W resistor to make a loading coil to make a 5’ whip antenna on a cubesat tune to 28 MHz. I was getting nowhere trying to add and subtract turns. With a bandwidth of only 200 kHz it was inconsistent getting to 28.120 center freq. Then I simply took the same length of wire and tried 3 methods all with the same number of turns. 1, down-and-back-and forward for 3 layers = 24.5 MHz 2, left-to-right but scrambled 3 layers along the way = 30.0 MHz 3, just a little squeezing of turns that had loosend = 28.8 MHz Wow, just changing the winding method moves the 0.2 MHz bandwidth as far as 30-to-1! The difference of course is the stray capacitance between the end turns. So winding method is important! Just thought I’d share the results… Bob, WB4APR

Paul Stoetzer N8HM, an AMSAT Area Coordinator who is currently giving a presentation for the HacDC Amateur Radio Club in Washington DC, will be on the upcoming AO-73 pass at 0130 UTC (2130 EDT) tonight to demonstrate amateur satellite operating for the club. He will be on the air from the rooftop of the building where the meeting is taking place, a church in northwest Washington north of the White House. If you are along the east coast, please get on and give N8HM a call. W1AW/3 from the District of Columbia - Final Statistics

Good evening, The W1AW/3 operation from the District of Columbia wrapped up just over an hour ago. On the satellites, 125 total QSOs were logged with 73 different stations. 55 grids, 30 states, and 6 DXCCs (United States, Mexico, Cuba, Brazil, England, and Ireland) were worked. Total by satellite: SO-50 - 54 FO-29 - 45 AO-73 - 17 AO-7 Mode B - 9 The 73 non-dupe QSOs represent the fifth highest total among W1AW portable operations active on the satellites thus far. I enjoyed the event immensely. In addition to my satellite operation, I operated several shifts on HF from W3DQ's station in northwest DC and got the opportunity to work some massive pileups. It was quite something to call CQ once or twice and have what seemed like half the world come back to you at once! While the District of Columbia does not count towards the W1AW WAS certificate, those who earn the certificate will receive an endorsement sticker noting that you have worked the District of Columbia.
