CAS-2T Beacon Report

CAS-2T was heard on 3Dec2016 at 0007-0009utc. It would send the letter "C" every 10 seconds or so. After about 10 transmissions, it stopped altogether. 73, John K8YSE/7 DM43 Mesa Arizona --- This email has been checked for viruses by Avast antivirus software. https://www.avast.com/antivirus

Greetings! Does anyone have a .csv file that can be imported into CHIRP to program the Baofeng radios for the common VHF/UHF satellites? Surprised I couldn't turn one up with Google. Best - Todd

introduction and request for information

I'm a software engineer that works with a bunch of electrical engineers on some radar stuff. So I've been interested in learning more about the electronics, signal processing and related matters. I'm also interested in and fairly knowledgeable about orbital things already, so it seems like amsats are a natural fit. I studied up and recently got my General, but I have basically no equipment other than some SDR dongles and a Baofeng. I did manage to cobble together a yagi that let me pull down both voice and data from a couple satellites, by waving the antenna around in what I hoped was the right direction. (I printed out the pass, but didn't and still don't have a reliable way of tracking.) What I want to do next is basically email myself over RF via space. I know there's some store-and-forward sats, but that's about it. I'd prefer to have an antenna that wouldn't need to track. I can limit myself to passes over X deg (say 30) to get short ranges that don't need high gain. But maybe the pass lengths won't be long enough to send and receive in that time? What I'm really looking for is tutorials. It's pretty easy to find ones aimed at hams who don't know anything about satellites or computers. It's hard to find ones for computer- and space-savvy people who don't have a lot of practical experience with xmit/rcv.

NASA has launched <https://herox.com/SpacePoop> "The Space Poop" challenge for participants to invent a hands-free system that routes and collects waste away from the astronaut's body for up to six days. How do you deal with human waste when you're trapped in a space suit for up to a week? That's what they're asking you. Inventors have until December 20, 2016, to submit their best "space poop" ideas for the chance to win $30,000. During spaceflight astronauts can be in their suits for more than 10 hours at a time. And, with NASA's plans to send humans deeper into space, future missions will require the advancement of new technology to keep the astronauts alive and well. And, shall we say, clean. Currently crews wear an absorbent diaper, but these will not be suitable for flights longer than a day. While it goes without saying that nobody would want to wear a diaper for a week, the issue is more than a matter of cleanliness, it's a matter of life or death. It is vital that the waste needs to be treated otherwise it could harm or even kill the astronaut, especially if infection sets in. NASA said it aims to test the winning ideas in the next year and roll out successful systems in the next three. __._,_.___ _____

AMSAT @ Superstition Superfest in Mesa AZ, Saturday (3 December 2016)

Hi! I will have an AMSAT booth at the Superstition Amateur Radio Club's "Superstition Superfest" hamfest on Saturday morning, 3 December 2016. The hamfest will be at Mesa Community College, between Southern Avenue and US-60 exit 177 along Dobson Road in Mesa, Arizona. The hamfest is normally in the southwest parking lot along Dobson Road, next to the US-60 freeway. The hamfest officially starts at 8am (1500 UTC), but I am sure there will be buyers and sellers out there at least a couple of hours before that time. More information about the hamfest is available at: https://www.superstitionsuperfest.org/ WD9EWK will be on various satellite passes during the hamfest - most likely in the morning, and maybe into the afternoon if there are still crowds walking around the hamfest. If you hear WD9EWK on the air Saturday, please call and be a part of the demonstrations. All QSOs will be uploaded to Logbook of the World after the hamfest.
