AMSAT: RFI from LED bulbs?

I am hearing reports of RFI from these LED bulbs. Not just HF, but also VHF. If you can make any quantitative assessments of such RFI, please let me know. And the amazing thing is that at VHF you will never notice it because RFI is noise power and it is noise power that keeps a squelch CLOSED. Manuallly open the squelch and sometimes RFI will show full scale on the S meter yet not open the squelch. And on my radios, when the squelch is closed, the S meter is inactive and shows 0. AO92 L/V mode??

I stayed up late tonight to work AO92 L/V mode only to find that it was still in L/V mode.Then I got on EO88 a few minutes later and was told that L/V mode would be on Wednesday this week.It would be nice it this information was posted on the BBS BEFORE the weekend gets here.Also why the change anyway????? Secondary mission ideas

I just had a super call with a university program flying a mission using SDRs. We talked about licensing and coordination issues, and discussed ideas for a secondary two-way mission that they want to do. What would you like to see, repeater, transponder, BBS, digital voice, digipeater? Downlink would be on 2m, and would probably be limited to 20-25khz wide. Other ideas? Something new and different? SetPC32 12.8d setup

Noticing the advert in the Journal and seeing a couple of features that looks useful I downloaded and installed it. Questions: It forced me to uninstall the old version before installing 12.8d. Once installed I had to reconfig everything local like station location, rotor and CAT interfaces, display and operational options... Is that correct or did I miss something that would have made this easier? Jim

Dennis WA6QKN and I will combine Rapid Deployment Radio (RaDAR), Parks On The Air (POTA), and Amateur Satellites along with a fun bike ride. All of this in Wakulla County, Florida. Rapid Deployment Amateur Radio combines the outdoors, amateur radio, and movement. You are welcome to try RaDAR in the field or chase us on the radio. Please check https://pota.us/ for our spots. We will use N4KGL as our callsign. In RaDAR we need at least five contacts to move to the next location. For bikes, we need to move at least two kilometers. Our bike rides will be longer to get from park to park. Our four-hour clock for the challenge will start at 1300 UTC, 9 AM EDT, with the SO-50 pass at the Wakulla Station Trailhead on the Tallahassee St Marks Historic Rail Trail (POTA K-3661). We will complete our five contacts on HF and ride our bikes to Wakulla State Forrest (POTA K-4643). Then continue the bike ride to Wakulla Springs State Park (POTA K-1862). LDPC for FPGAs to do DVB-S2/X on SDRs - so many letters! What does it mean? Greetings all! Plenty going on in the open source amateur satellite scene! Here's where Open Research Institute is going next with advanced forward error correcting codes. We are doing our best to get them into as many FPGAs as possible. This will amplify the capabilities of all those SDRs out there. Open Research Institute is a 501(c)(3) dedicated to open source R&D for amateur radio. We are particularly interested in technology that enables modern digital microwave-band amateur satellite ground stations and payloads. All of the work directly benefits all AMSAT organizations. LDPC stands for low density parity check coding. It is a powerful forward error correcting code, meaning it provides a huge amount of durability and error correction for digital signals. LDPC is one of two error correcting codes in DVB-S2 and DVB-S2X. The other is called BCH. DVB-S2 is the most widely used satellite downlink standard and has become widely adopted in amateur satellite work. DVB stands for digital video broadcast. The S is satellite and the 2 is second edition. We replace the MPEG layer, which is appropriate for commercial video broadcast, with a generic data layer, which is more useful for hams. This switch boosts bandwidth. MPEG has a lot of overhead. This "generic stream encapsulation" protocol is called GSE. It comes from the same organization that makes DVB standards. It's an open standard, like DVB-S2, and is already available in GNU Radio and Wireshark due to some excellent volunteer work. GSE is a drop-in replacement for MPEG in DVB-S2/X. DVB-S2 will be heavily used on Gateway, is used by ARISS, and is a strong contender for a wide variety of payloads currently being designed, developed, integrated, and tested. It's also used terrestrially by a lot of DATV enthusiasts. The DVB-S2X (X means extension) codes work down to an SNR of -10dB on the low signal strength end. The extension also adds more codes to the higher-end. This allows for very powerful signals that are used by high-throughput satellites. For amateur radio, we are generally more interested in the very low SNR capabilities of DVB-S2X, but don't overlook the available codes at the high SNR end! Why is LDPC so great? It approaches the physical limits of what error correcting codes can do. The only better code out there right now are Polar codes, used in 5G. They're slightly better, but heavily encumbered by licensing. Becoming familiar with LDPC gives you knowledge of a code with cutting edge performance. I gave a talk on coding theory and how LDPC works at TAPR DCC in 2018. Charles Brain's Nvidia implementation (graphical processing unit) was demonstrated at Reno Symposium in 2017. A copy of this work is in the Phase 4 Ground repository. Ahmet Inan's general purpose processor implementation has been incorporated into GNU Radio and leandvb and more. His original work can be found here: https://github.com/xdsopl/LDPC This is all open source work that is needed for projects like Phase 4 Ground and Space. It's freely available for anyone to use, and people are using it. Now, we're working on getting LDPC decode into field programmable gate arrays, or FPGAs. Why? Because it's the best architectural fit for the very parallel algorithms in LDPC codes. Another huge benefit is that decode can be moved from a general purpose processor to an FPGA co-processor. This frees up resources in any off the shelf software defined radio (SDR) and makes for much more powerful receivers for amateur satellites that use DVB-S2/X. Getting to this stage took three years of hard work from a long list of amazing volunteers and enthusiasts and donors. Many of them are on this list. Thank you so much for the support. Openrotor is a heavy-duty open source rotator and controller project. If you are interested in that, let me know - it's off to a good start with volunteers on three continents, but there's some expertise gaps that still need filling. It must support a 2m dish at 10 GHz and not be so loud the neighbors complain. It will speak MQTT and use other common interfaces (hamlib, N1MM). More soon! -Michelle W5NYV

I'm giving a "Satellite 101" presentation to the Gaston RC (EM95) at their monthly club meeting this Saturday at 2 pm local (Eastern). http://www.gastonradioclub.org/default.aspx I doubt I'll attempt to work any FM passes - except maybe attempt to listen - as all of the passes around that time are 7 degrees or lower. There is an AO-85 pass - 42 degrees - from 3:39pm to 3:51; if there are any GRC members still around, I may try that one, using my call, N4HF. Philip N4HF

<Per ARRL VHF/UHF Century Club Award Rules, paragraphs 4(e) and 4(f) stations who claim to operate from more than one grid locator simultaneously need to be exactly on the line or grid corner and document with a picture showing your equipment and a GPS displaying your location exactly on the line or corner and a GPS error no more than 20 feet.?> I use a Garmin Oregon 750T handheld GPS when roving. I am also a geocacher and this GPS works very well for both activities. Check a grid line map on the Internet and use your pointer to get the coordinates. Plug them into your GPS and rove. Same for a four corner point. Other hikers handheld GPS units will work, I am sure, but I am familiar with this one. The touch screen is really helpful. Brad KC9UQR

An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Farmwell Station Middle School Space Dreamers, Ashburn, VA on 29 Oct. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 15:01 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between NA1SS and K4LRG. The contact should be audible over the state of Virginia and adjacent areas. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. Story: Farmwell Station Middle School is a public school located in the suburbs of Ashburn, Virginia close to our nation's capital. Our school has a diverse population attracted by a variety of work opportunities in the area. We have 1,186 students who attend and are in sixth through eighth grade. The native languages spoken by our students include English, French, German, Spanish, Urdu, Farsi, Mandarin, Korean, Hindi, Dari and Arabic. Our cluster schools (elementary and high) are going to be participating in this contact, so that we can include as many students as possible for this experience. The mission of Loudoun County Public Schools is "Empowering all students to make meaningful contributions to the world." Our school is committed to building a culture of continuous improvement by developing strong partnerships with families and our community. Our goal is to develop knowledgeable critical thinkers, communicators, collaborators, creators, and contributors through a series of rich learning experiences that are connected to the real world. Through this contact we want to raise awareness for STEM subjects and bring them alive for our students by investigating various topics dealing with space exploration, research, and communication technologies. We have a Space Dreamers Student Ambassadors Club here at Farmwell Station Middle School. The club's goal is to provide an ongoing opportunities for students to share knowledge and information with other students in their school about space science. Ambassadors will help plan events or activities such as rocket launches, the Tomatosphere project, and field trips. Our school purchased an ISS Above to provide our students with the opportunity to watch the live feed as they eat lunch. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. Can you grow plants in space? 2. Did you bring anything to remind you of home with you to Space? 3. At the start of the 19th century, how were pigeons used in the early form of remote sensing? 4. Do you believe that we can create Faster Than Light travel? 5. How does the oxygen in the space suit work? 6. How is the technology from other fields of science creating engineering to make it safer for the astronauts? 7. When you're in space, how do you go places you want without floating in the opposite direction? 8. How do you conduct experiments that test how physical laws are different in a low gravity state? 9. Do you have any way to know where you are in space such as landmarks? 10. What improvements have you made in biotech engineering on making a sustainable environment? 11. Do microgravity tests and examines on astronauts play a key role in shaping longer and safer future missions?(Astronauts from the ISS get examined to see if the insides of their bodies have changed or how the body works while they are in microgravity.) 12. Has being on the ISS changed your perspective on earth? 13. When did you develop your passion for science and career as an astronaut? 14. Has a "Rover FAQ" been developed as a way to help perspective rovers? A couple of questions come to mind (i.e. not meant to be all inclusive, rather a starting point): Q: How close does one need to be to a "grid line" for the location to count as two Grids? Q: How close does one need to be at the intersection of four grids for the location to count as four Grids? Q: How to log roving in ARRL's LOTW? Does each grid location need an entry in TQSL? Q: Is there a listing of the "Rare grids"? Particularly for the south west? I am sure there are many other questions related to roving. 73, Tom K0CFI

An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Young Scientists Program at USC and Vermont Elementary School, Los Angeles, CA on Oct 28. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 18:57 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between NA1SS and KN6CHS. The contact should be audible over the state of California and adjacent areas. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. Story: Built in 1896, Vermont Elementary School is a traditional calendar school, located in South Los Angeles. Our Community is comprised of a majority of lower social-economic, working class families. It is also representative of a diverse ethnic population. The student body is comprised of 623 students in grades Pre-Kindergarten through fifth. Vermont's ethnic population includes 90.01% Hispanic, 8.6% African American, 1.2% White, and 0.5% Asian. Of these students, 44.5% are English Language Learners (ELL). 100% of our students receive free or reduced price meals. The average class size in grades Kindergarten through second is 24:1 and 30:1 in grades four through five (student to teacher ratio). The principal, Patricia Ferguson says "I have the best students". At Vermont, we pride ourselves on fostering a strong sense of community and reinforcing the values of our students and their families through our educational philosophy. Our parents are very supportive and appreciative of the resources and opportunities that its community partners like the University of Southern California (USC) provides for our students. In recent years, students have voiced their increasing sense of inclusion and support from our outstanding teachers and staff, and many of our students have gone on to lead significant community outreach efforts of their own, including working with the USC Young Scientists Program (YSP). The USC Young Scientists Program (YSP) supports Vermont Avenue Elementary School as a partner by providing a supplemental STEAM education program to second through fifth grade classrooms, in conjunction with their classroom teachers. The YSP and Vermont Elementary have enjoyed a fruitful collaborative relationship over the last 10 years, and a number of current YSP undergraduate teaching staff members have attended the school themselves. In this way, the YSP looks to give back to the community from which its own leadership and inspiration has come from, and seeks to provide students with diverse role models within STEAM fields as a way to encourage greater representation of underrepresented minority (URM) students in these professions. How do you sleep, and in what do you sleep? 12. When you were young, did you want to be an astronaut? 13. How did you become an astronaut? 14. What do you do when you take a break in space? 15. Can you do your work in space without your work floating away? 16. Who would you thank for helping you to accomplish your dreams? 17. How do you get ready to go into space? 18. How is it that you guys get your food supply? 19. Is it dangerous to flip upside down after you are finished eating? 20. How did you feel saying goodbye to your family and boarding the space station? Our school has an incredibly diverse population of nearly 275 students in grades 1-8 (ages 6-14). Approximately 20% of students qualify as socioeconomically disadvantaged with several students participating in Migrant Education programs. More than 18 languages are spoken by our Golden Oak Montessori families with a number of students qualifying as English language learners. As a Montessori school, a key component of our curriculum includes hands-on materials and experiential learning opportunities designed to stimulate academic exploration with a goal of educating children to be active, aware citizens with the skills and knowledge to participate meaningfully in the diverse and challenging new century. A cornerstone of our science curriculum are students doing hands on experiments using Full Option Science System kits from the Lawrence Livermore Labs, and Engineering is Elemental kits from the Museum of Science in Boston. In addition, students have had recent experiences building Solar Suitcases through a grant from Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E), researching marine ecosystems along the California coast, working on a farm to learn about agro-science, and hiking local trails to learn about watershed environments. To date Golden Oak Montessori's experiential learning has focused on terrestrial systems that student can see and touch, which why our whole school community is very excited to have an opportunity to shift our focus further out into space with an ARISS radio contact experience. This will take our student's STEM opportunities in a new and exciting direction which we hope will stimulate both our student's and teacher's scientific imaginations even further! FoxTelem Version 1.08 Released

I am releasing Version 1.08 of FoxTelem. This release provides several enhancements and needed changes for FOX-1E and HuskySat, a partnership with the University of Washington. You will need to download this version to successfully decode data from 2 new spacecraft which will transmit BPSK telemetry on 70cm. Allow default mode to be set for each spacecraft * No longer overwrite the user settings (such as max/min frequency) when spacecraft files updated * Save the properties whenever they are changed (rather than just at exit) * Allow the user to change the display name for a spacecraft without changing the KEPS name * Prevent FOXDB from being corrupted when power restarted * Better memory management so that long running FoxTelem sessions do not end up out of memory * Allow MAX and MIN records to be displayed in table on the telemetry tab. Show the Capture Date for the record being displayed e.g. RT, MAX, MIN * Delete existing files when server data downloaded * Tie the STP date more accurately to the position of the SYNC word in the bit buffer to avoid stamping frames with the same date * Fixed many small bugs and crashes And many other bug fixes. Antenna for 1.2 GHz or 2.4 GHz AND 4800/9600 baud telemetry/packet

I monitor 2.4 GHz on a regular basis. Most satellites on 2.4 high speed data down only when directly over their control stations. The University of Georgia satellite is getting ready to orbit a sat mid October, but it will also be a very high baud rate. The only satellite of interest is DTUSat-2 at 2.401835. It's intermittent and only works in ellipse. It sends a cw signal. A SDR is a good thing to have. Bottom line is that there's not much going on up there. I miss the AO-40 days. Thank you K4KDR. I'm about ready to throw in the towel with AGWPE, AGW Online KISS. I'd love to capture some KISS frames, but it has so far eluded me.

Stoetzer said CubeSat programs interested in launching an Amateur Radio payload may partner with AMSAT to carry a Fox-1E module on their spacecraft. "By providing Amateur Radio capability, the Cube- Sat program gets a worldwide ground station network to receive their telemetry and experiment data while the Amateur Radio commun- ity gets a transponder to use in orbit," he pointed out. Stoetzer said the first such partnership will be with the Husky Satellite Lab at the University of Washington. Its 3U CubeSat -- HuskySat-1 -- is set to launch on the ELaNa XXV mission from Wallops Island, Virginia, no sooner than November 2. A Northrop Grumman Cygnus spacecraft will carry HuskySat-1 to the International Space Station, and after completing its mission there, Cygnus will con- tinue to an orbit of approximately 500 kilometers (310 miles) to deploy HuskySat-1. "After a 30-day mission to complete tests of its experimental payloads -- a pulsed plasma thruster, and a K-band (24 GHz) communications system -- the satellite will be turned over to AMSAT, and the linear transponder will be made available to the Amateur Radio community," Stoetzer said. Proximity of HF vertical to my satellite antennas

My neighbor has a HF vertical (10/15/20 meter trap) that is about 30 feet from my 2M/70/cm/23cm satellite antennas. He currently runs 100W and is planning on going to 200W. Should I be concerned? Will the RF get into my feed lines and blow up my rig? Or into my antenna rotor cables and fry my controller? I am still in construction mode for my satellite ground station. Bob W7OTJ.

Still here operating from St. Lucia at the Villa Grand Piton just north of Soufriere in Grid FK93lu. Contact me by e-mail for scheds providing specific common footprint passes. AO-91, AO-92, AO-07b, CAS-4A, CAS-4B, XW-2A, and XW-2F have yielded the best results. Note I do have some limitations due to topography. Low angle passes for Europe and South America are unlikely, CQWW starts Saturday Oct. 26th at 0000 UTC (Friday local time) but I will try to catch some of the weekend passes during the 48 hour contest (on HF look for J68MD in the contest). South Texas Rove Nov 2nd to 9th

Hi Everyone, I will be roving to south Texas on the above dates. My current plan is as follows:Sat Nov 2nd: EL08/EL09 probably one pass per grid starting in the late afternoon local Sun Nov 3rd: EL17/EL18 holiday style, one or two passes per grid Mon Nov 4th through Fri Nov 8th: EL06 / EL15 / EL16. We are staying in EL06 and will activate 15 and 16 a few times throughout the week. Will probably activate EL06 4 or 5 times. Sat Nov 9th: EL07 / EL08 Probably one pass from each grid. Returning to satellites and forgot lots

I'm returning to satellite operations after being off the air (entire station disconnected) for over two decades and am looking to put my FT-736R back to use in the manner for which it was intended.?? However, while I'm OK with my 2M setup (rig to amp/pre-amp unit to Eggbeater) I'm less confident on 70cM, specifically how not to toast the mast mounted pre-amp. I know that I need to inject the voltage for the pre-amp using the little control box that came with the pre-amp (Mirage KP-2 series) but how do I ensure that the voltage drops when I transmit so the pre-amp is taken out-of-line??? Perhaps there is a FAQ or diagram for this out there somewhere? Also, what is being used for CAT control these days if I'm using SatPC32 for tracking? I feel like such a newb! I'm going through my many notes and inspirations from this past weekend. First, the Symposium was terrific and the organizers out-did themselves. Second, the flash drive on which the Symposium Proceedings was provided is genius. Not only does it obviate printing and transporting an inch thick document for this year's conclave, but the flash drive also contains the Proceedings of all Symposiums back to 1986! The flash drive is essentially a Britannica of satellite ham radio and many related topics. All well done in every dimension. 73, Red KC4LE
