Wow! Sounds like you guys have done and are doing an awful lot for the hobby. My thanks to you. It appears there are resources out there if AMSAT is willing to do what's necessary to have access to them. I guess the question is what's that involve? Is it simply just going open source or is there more to it than that? Happy 27th birthday to AMRAD-Oscar 27, still alive and operating today! For an amateur radio satellite operator in the early 1990s, working on a satellite project based on the AMSAT Microsat design was a dream job! The hams on the team (including Dino Lorenzini, Mark Kanawati, Steve Greene and Mike Wyrick) couldn't help but include an amateur radio payload, and were successful with the help of fellow amateurs and the local Vienna, Virginia Amateur Research and Development (AMRAD) group: Paul Renaldo, Andre Castillot, Dave Rogers, Glenn Baumgartner, Sandy Sanders, Matt Butcher, Randy Mays, and Terry Fox, and with help from AMSAT’s Lyle Johnson, Chuck Green, and Jim White, among many others. EYESAT-1/AO-27 launched (with the amateur payload and an extra UHF antenna for the downlink) at 0145 UTC September 26, 1993. [Ariane-4 V59 also launched amateur satellites KO-25, IO-26, and PO-28, SSTL’s Healthsat-2, the Stella research satellite, and the Spot-3 earth observation satellite.] The satellite was commanded on during the next orbit and the first QSO on the amateur payload was made the following morning on September 27, 1993. (We think – does anyone have an archive of amsat-bb emails from 1993 who can check?) AO-27 was the first FM “bent pipe” satellite and proved to be easy to work with a strong downlink and sensitive receiver. The amateur FM repeater has served many Hams worldwide and was one of the first “Easy Sats”. AO-27 was later used for the first successful D-Star mode satellite QSO. The 800km orbit provides continent-spanning coverage. At least one station is known to have worked 49 states solely via AO-27! And here we are today, the 27th of September, 2020, celebrating the 27th birthday of AO-27! Thanks to Mike Wyrick N3UC who babysat the spacecraft for the last 27 years. And thanks to all those who helped. There are many untold stories and photos we hope to share in the near future. Did anyone archive Clive's UO-11 website? Or, do you have any of the .zip files?

Friends, Clive Wallis, G3CWV, used to maintain a website with lots of UO-11 information, recordings and telemetry. Unfortunately, he became a silent key in 2015. I recently tried to go to Clive's UO-11 website, http://g3cwv.co.uk/oscar11.htm, and discovered that is no longer on the web. I tried the Internet Archive's Wayback machine and found that they had archived most of the HTML pages, but not the zip files with the telemetry and recordings. Did anyone make an archive or a copy of Clive's website? Or, did you ever download and save any of the .zip files with the audio recordings or telemetry? Sad Tale of a New Rover

I've been at this satellite thing for more than 35 years, so when a family trip took me through some relatively rare grids in Nebraska last week, I thought it would be a great chance to try out my new FT-818 on a rove. Looks like fun, and how hard can it be? Well, this old satellite hand had forgotten many of the skills needed back before I built a capable, computer-controlled station. I didn't practice enough with the new rig at home, I didn't get familiar enough with the location apps, and I assumed too much expertise on the part of the operator. In fact, I couldn't even find the grid line correctly! And on another pass, I couldn't even hear the bird (still working on what happened there). So, moral of the story, sometimes getting out of one's comfort zone and trying something different is a good thing. But doing so requires some humility. Some things are harder than they look, whether it's building and launching a satellite, or just working one from a gravel road in Nebraska. My hat is off to the successful rovers across the nation. And I shall work on (re)learning the necessary basic skills before setting out again. (P.S., if you were one of the stations I worked from the "grid line," the LoTW upload has been corrected. Election Results

It was unfortunate that the election results were not released in a separate message on the amsat-bb. The mistake was explained by Mark Johns, K0JM, and is totally understandable. Putting out a weekly or monthly newsletter is a lot of work and those who have done it here or elsewhere know how much effort it takes. So hats off to those who do this for AMSAT. There has been little discussion about the meaning of the election results themselves and that is what really matters. About 57% of the votes were for the three candidates who campaigned on staying the course. 43% of the votes wanted a change of some sort. So the organization is divided, but how serious the divide remains to be seen. Although they were not on the ballot, In some ways the election was a referendum on Patrick and Michelle who have made their positions known to the membership that has been paying attention. Now that they did not pick up any support from the election, will they continue to serve? And if they choose not to serve, will the alternates (who wanted change also) feel that they would be able to contribute in a meaningful way? As Kenny Rogers once said, "You've got to know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em, know when to walk away, know when to run." Some members have already announced their intentions not to serve in various ways and for various reasons. Others may follow. The Symposium and associated Board Meeting coming up soon may provide some answers as to the future direction of AMSAT. We will wait and see how it all turns out. 73, John K8YSE

The membership has spoken. I don't agree with their decision but that's life. I wish the organization the best. I was ready to move on and pursue some other things and was about to unsubscribe from the list but seeing a post like this where someone of Bob's stature in the hobby expresses his opinion gives me hope all is not lost and makes me want to not be so hasty and quick to judge. Bob, You make a good point about the money available for academic projects. It seems like there are more and more student- and university-built satellites using amateur frequencies (sometimes questionably), but with no actual transponder or digipeater. Working with them to add a small transponder payload like the LTM or the Brno PSK module could be an easy way to get more bandwidth up there without a lot of overhead cost. I also back your sentiment that AMSAT should consider applying to more grants from places like ARDC and maybe even the NSF or similar. Education is one of its main purposes, and the NSF may be open to it. -Stephen, N8URE

I am with Bob on this. A month or two back I raised the question * about why we were not getting into HEO and got barraged with the same old excuses from the "old guard" about ITAR, Funding, etc. It was clearly distressing to me as a long time AMSAT member to learn that all the old guard can do is regurgitate the same mantra for 15 years. Meanwhile our friends on the other side of the globe have a GEO sat that anyone with a small amount of funds can use, and with no funds can listen to the downlink on the "internet". Michelle sent me some information about ORI and the "progressive" efforts being made to get past the ITAR logjam. It was not shared with me the funding windfall that was becoming available which should wake folks up now. I voted for the progressive group. I don't see the shortfall in votes as being a "referendum" for the old guard, rather, they need to step up and accept that continuing the defeatist mindset cannot continue. A Moscow Aviation Institute MAI-75 SSTV Experiment event is planned for Wednesday, September 30 starting 13:05 UTC to 18:45 UTC and Thursday, October 1, starting at 12:30 UTC to 17:45 UTC. 5 years of IO-86 satellite

Today is the celebration of 5 years of flawless operation of IO-86 satellite. This satellite has performed in at least 3 emergency communications from disaster area in Indonesia, and has been a breeding ground for close to 100 new Indonesian amsat operators. Yesterday we’ve concluded a 3-day event to celebrate this huge milestone thru a VR and APRS qso party. Hi All, Learning about a well-established parametric Lindenblad design, adding on to it a bit, along with manufacturing and building (and using!) this version of a Lindenblad antenna was really a joy over the last couple months. I believe other satellite enthusiasts might enjoy building it too, but possibly the 3D printing is not a keen interest. Not to make any profit but really just to share, I'm considering offering a kit as described below. Assembling this kit would result in four parametric elements that bolt onto the aluminum dipole described in the AMSAT article by AA2TX. Connection Question

LMR400 routed into the shack to the main transceiver. Curious how others have implemented a semi-elegant solution for using these antennas with FCD+ or other dongle requiring an SMA connection. I know how to do it clumsily, I’m interested in learning how you're doing that nicely? 73 Jeff KE9V

feeding CP antennas

I am looking for ideas on fastening the feed lines for CP antennas. I have a 22 element M2 for 144 and a 435CP30 M2. Running the feed lines out the back seems to create problems. Are people supporting the cables or letting them hang. Any ideas will be help full. Thanks Mike
