Good Evening, I have for quite some time trying to call the ISS when over the Indian Ocean without success, even today on Tx 145.200 and Rx 145.800 MHz as usual. But no respond, which I fully understand as the astronauts have tight schedule and most probably do not expect anyone calling when over the Indian Ocean even if in their spare time. So, my message in the bottle is:” if any astronauts on the iSS or anyone who can have contact with them read this message, please request on my behalf a sked, it will be a first this side and probably the first 3B8/ISS QSO” Thanks for passing on the message and I just hope to make it. I would be really happy to make it and actually if I can record same it would be a national event and promoting radio ham this side at national level. 73 Jean Marc (3B8DU)

I am still being asked to show audiences the “basics” of working satellites. My presentation has never been advertised as a session on working the linears. They are mentioned during my presentation - and attendees are pointed in the right direction to find excellent info on getting started working them. The “speaker proposal” I send to those who invite me spells out exactly what will be explained and discussed during my presentation. I posted a “sample” copy of that proposal here a few months ago. It plainly explains what I will be doing for the club/convention. Would you like to be sent a copy? Not sure what you are getting at. Would you like me to find an AMSAT member who can give your club a great talk on the linears? Do YIOU have one? Hey, fellow presenters - Since the pandemic, I have been ZOOM-ing my presentations. I issue the invitation, I use my account, I am in charge of the whole show. My wife works the “Chat Box” and watched for questions and late arrivals for me. The ONLY time I let another club “run the show” it was a disaster. They made a few techie errors … all would NOT have occurred if I had initiated the whole thing. SO, my question: Are you initiating your meetings yourselves? Or are you finding being set up as “co-host” is working OK for you? Good Afternoon, All! Thank you for all the replies to my question s about satellite names. The immediate solution for me was suggested by Jan, PE0SAT: The Auxiliary file amsatnames.txt allows one to use alternate names. That works, and my apps work like a charm, again. Just a couple of thoughts: Erich, My issue was that SatPC32 uses the name from the keps for the DDE and the DDE does use a space to delimit data. Greg, Neat thing about human-readable names is that they are human-recognizable, just what I want my program to display while doing it's job. Using the catalogue number would still require a reference to the name. Jan, While looking at the required field for the amsatnames.txt file I remembered reading somewhere about the discussions going on about the TLE structure and their implications for SatPC32 and , no big deal, for my little apps. Changes are "'a comin". OH! a last question. Why don't I get my own posts to AMSAT-BB? I have not, yet, signed up for the new postman service. Considering the posted problems associated with the change, at first, I thought I would wait till they were solved fearing loosing all the knowledge collected here. Is that the issue? Good Morning: I recently wrote a Raspberry Pi application that uses the UDP transmission from SatPC32. Works like charm,. It selects the correct antenna (2M or 70cm) combos. It controls my crystal controlled WX receiver (auto selects the correct WX channel), selects the correct SDR / software setup for telemetry, etc. Well, it worked like a charm until I encountered "OBJECT C" and "CAPE 3" in the elements. SatPC32's UDP uses a space as a data deliminator, so I get an error ( the satellite string has one too many pieces of data, 9 instead of 8) when SatPC323 starts to track one of these. That's OK. I just edit the keps file to read "OBJECT-C" and "CAPE-3" (which, by the way, is what it's called in all the literature). Well, it's NOT OK . It is pain in the neck. Every time I want to update my keps I have to remember to edit the file. Do I have to live with this anomaly ? Putting out some feelers here. Next month (March) I will be returning to Abilene, Texas to dismantle my station for a permanent move. I have decided I will not be taking my M2 Leopack antennas. 2 February 2021 Testing and characterization of RadFxSat-2/Fox-1E continues.After user reports and additional verification that the linear transponder is at least partially functioning with a low level downlink signal, the Engineering and Operations teams worked to identify which satellite, or Object, orbited from the Virgin Orbit Launch Demo 2 is actually RadFxSat-2/Fox-1E.Several objects have been suspected (D, C, and M), with Object C being suggested recently by Drew Glasbrenner, KO4MA.Recently, these satellites have sufficiently spread apart to allow testing to determine which object is RadFxSat-2/Fox-1E. During the 2 Feb 2021 0240 UTC passes, command station Mark Hammond, N8MH, compared Objects D, C, and M for the “best fit” for received signals with Doppler correction on both the uplink and downlink frequencies for each of the candidate objects.Objects D and M were quickly eliminated from further consideration, due to poor frequency predictions of Doppler correction compared to observed signals. The clear best fit is Object C, which is known OBJECT C, INTELDES 2021-002C, and NORAD CAT ID 47311/./Therefore, AMSAT is happy to identify Object C/2021-002C/47311U as RadFxSat-2/Fox-1E.Thank to Alan Biddle, WA4SCA, for support during the identification. It should be noted that 18 SPS has not yet approved the identification for cataloguing.Final determination of the object assignment comes from the squadron. The Engineering and Operations teams appreciate the community’s cooperation thus far and affirm the request that users do not attempt to use the transponder until further notice.The proper identification will allow further characterization of the satellite’s condition through additional testing. The Cubesats thread that I started several days ago has morphed into a general dscussion of AMSAT satellites. Mr Moderator, please change the thread accordingly. Before that happened, some excellent technical points were made about Cubesats. What;s the best way to get them into the hands of designers and builders? Speaking personally, I was impressed by how little things have chaged since the early days. As the French say, "plus ca change, plus la meme chose." Proolems with negative power budgets, antenna deployment, thermal design, lack of rad-hard components, and IHU failures, to just a few, were evident in the 1970s and 1980s, and were written about at the time. If anything, they have been made worse by the inadequate financial resources and lack of technical sophistication which are all too common in the Cubesat world. Hams are not poor, many of us are willing to spend thousands on the latest radio gear, and DX-peditions have raised substantial amounts of money to finance trips to remote islands so that contributors can get a rare QSL card. We have the financial means but are lacking the organization. We have to convince members that if they can spend $2000 on a new radio then they can also send a $2000 check to AMSAT if they want new satellites in orbit. Some of our members are quite satisfied with low orbit FM satellites and think that keeping these in space is the top priority. Many others still remember the days of AO-10, AO-13 and AO-40 (when it was working). Many of those members became discouraged and left AMSAT when we failed to replace those satellites with new ones. We can keep the LEO sats in orbit for those who want them by offering our radio boards to universities and other groups who want to build CubeSats but don't know a lot about radio. To serve the long term interests of the amateur radio community we must set our sights on larger, more powerful and higher satellites, and we will probably have to pay for those launches because the era of free launches for satellites larger than a Cubesat is gone and not coming back. Fortunately the newly emerging private space industry offers launch options for much less money than the days when we got "free" launches from the government. The short lifetime of Phase 3D is a valid point, it was intended to last much longer except for a simple and avoidable mistake. The trouble is that P3D was a one of a kind mission with no possibility of a follow up mission. Future AMSAT HEO programs must be ongoing programs in which the lessons learned from earlier satellites can feed into subsequent missions. AMSAT must also prove that we are capable of learning lessons from ours and other's failures and applying them to new satellites. AMSAT has to prove that it is capable and worthy of such support, because we are only as good as our last failure. The petty bickering that has occurred recently has to end so that we can present a professional appearance to outsiders. I was working in the Hubble control center when the flawed mirror was discovered. Much has been written about why the conflicting optical tests were not followed up, but the project WAS behind schedule and over budget and Congress was looking at cancellation if it fell any further behind. Schedule and budget pressure are very real worries for NASA missions. I will simply point out that NASA repaired the flawed telescope within three years at minimal cost and the telescope has worked flawlessly for over 30 years now and is still going strong. That is a pretty successful failure. And NASA runs the CubeSat Launch Initiative and deploys many of them from the ISS, so it obviously does support CubeSats.
