Lightning protection/preamp question

I'm installing a pair of M2 circularly polarized yagis. I have a long coax run, so I'm going to use SSB Electronics preamps mounted on the 8' tower. I have a ground rod by the base of the tower with a couple of lightning arrestors that the two coax runs go through, but I was curious what to do about protecting the inputs to the preamps? Do I use a second pair of lightning arrestors between the antennas and the preamps? Or just mount the preamps on the shack-side of the existing lightning arrestors? Rich, KD2CQ

just initial monitoring results so far: I am hearing FM signals on the downlink of both FO29, and RS44 when the uplink Freq on both birds is around 145.945. I have not been able to catch a callsign, but clear voices at times. just an FYI. 73 Christy KB6LTY

The school operates as a partnership between WhitecapDakota First Nation and Saskatoon Public Schools, and embodies the vision ofprovincially mandated curriculum in alignment with Dakota First Nationsculture, language, and traditions. To enhance the student’s experience duringthe ARISS contact, Chief Whitecap School integrated the topic of space throughall the core subjects for all grades. Their goal is to raise the student’sappreciation and interest in the science and technology of space exploration aswell as give the students an exciting and relevant learning opportunity thatwill form a life-time memory - talking with an astronaut aboard the ISS. ARISS conducts 60-80 of thesespecial amateur radio contacts each year between students around the globe andcrew members with ham radio licenses aboard the ISS. Detroit Public Schools Community District’s Davis AerospaceTechnical High School (Davis HS), founded in 1943, is named in honor ofBenjamin O. Davis Jr., the first African American General in the United StatesAir Force. All Davis HS students in grades 9th through 12th are enrolledin the school’s aviation/aerospace classes, which are designed to prepare themto enter the fields of both aviation and aerospace. The school’s curriculumincludes a flight training program allowing students to learn a variety ofconcepts and regulations related to unmanned and manned flight. Students also cantake preparation classes for remote pilot’s certificate and train onstate-of-the-art flight simulators, and can participate in a newlyre-established Aircraft Maintenance CTE program where they work on aircraft atColman A. Young City Airport. Located within the Golightly Career and TechnicalCenter, Davis HS’s alumni includes pilots, drone operators, aircraft mechanics,engineers, and others in various high-tech professions. Members of the HazelPark Amateur Radio Club (W8HP) are supporting the school for this ARISS contactby providing equipment setup assistance and ham radio instruction to students inthe school’s newly formed (2021) amateur radio club. Students active in theschool’s ham club will be working on their amateur radio FCC license using textbooks provided by ARRL Great Lakes Division member Dale Williams, WA8EFK. This will be a direct contact via Amateur Radio allowing students to ask their questions ofAstronaut Koichi Wakata, amateur radio call sign KI5TMN. Local Covid-19protocols are adhered to as applicable for each ARISS contact. The flight date dependent on testing. Ham TV has been inoperative since April 2018. It had been active since April 2014, having been launched to the ISS in 2013. It was returned to earth for diagnosis and repair in late 2018. The ARISS Ham TV transmitter is capable of downlinking DVB-S digital video of ARISS contacts and other activities on board the ISS to amateur ground stations in the 2.3 GHz amateur band. Don't think they know they're in a satellite uplink part of 2m. Sometimes you can catch a callsign and contact them about it. KB7ADL

RS-44 FM Signals

HI All I've noticed on the last few RS44 passes that there seems to be an constant carrier signal, maybe FM showing up. My guess that this is a rogue signal from someone with a couple of hand held using them illegally someplace in the US. Likely they have no clue of the impact. On a waterfall, it is pretty easy to see the carrier and the sidebands associated with it. Thoughts? Mike va3mw

I read a message from Jerry, N5EKO, that the gentleman's agreement is to operate 3-10 kHz above the bottom band edge. WSJT-X may show you about 2.5 to 3 kHz of passband on a typical computer screen. So, that 7 kHz seems a bit much to monitor all at once. I think it'd be easier to just pick a standard calling offset from the bottom band edge to monitor when the satellite is passing. If we all started listening to +3 kHz to +5.5 kHz USB FT4 mode from the band edge it's a simple rule of thumb and we know where to listen to those signals seemingly under the noise floor. Many users don't have a band scope. So, a designated offset would be helpful. Example: RS-44 Satellite downlink passband is 435.61 - 435.67 MHz Listen or CQ by setting SATPC32 satellite (not rig since it changes due to doppler) frequency to 435.613 USB mode and choosing FT4 on WSJT-X so, the satellite (not rig) downlink frequency for FO-29 = 435.803 AO-07 = 145.928 HO-113 = 435.168 and so forth for other satellites. Maybe the XWs, CAs, JO-97, and EO-88 birds would be good for FT4, too. Mike, AA9VI EN52

There was no damage to Artemis flight hardware, and facilities are in good shape with only minor water intrusion identified in a few locations. Next, engineers will extend access platforms around the Space Launch System rocket and Orion spacecraft inside the Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB) to prepare for additional inspections and start preparation for the next launch attempt, including retesting the flight termination system. As teams complete post-storm recovery operations, NASA has determined it will focus Artemis I launch planning efforts on the launch period that opens Nov. 12 and closes Nov. 27. Over the coming days, managers will assess the scope of work to perform while in the VAB and identify a specific date for the next launch attempt. Focusing efforts on the November launch period allows time for employees at Kennedy to address the needs of their families and homes after the storm and for teams to identify additional checkouts needed before returning to the pad for launch. Bogdan-Martin will assume office on January 1, 2023. She is radio amateur; call sign KD2JTX. The election took place during ITU's Plenipotentiary Conference (PP-22) in Bucharest, Romania, on Thursday, September 29, 2022. At SpaceXs request, NASA and SpaceX signed an unfunded Space Act Agreement to cooperate on a six-month study of the feasibility for a Polaris Program mission to boost Hubbles orbit. Without a boost, the thrusterless telescope is expected to re-enter and burn up around 2037now at ~535 km, it has lost about 30 km since the final Shuttle visit 13 years ago. It seems Jared Isaacmans nascent commercial space program is looking for useful things to do, and this certainly qualifies. Their first mission, Polaris Dawn, is scheduled for NET March 2023 and includes plans for the first commercial spacewalk. If NASA decides to move forward with the reboost, other companies will also likely get to bid (perhaps unless Polaris decides to do it for free). The four-person crew rode a SpaceX Dragon spacecraft to docking at the space station at 5:01 p.m. EDT (2101 GMT) Thursday to begin a five-month science expedition. Its most direct current competitors are the Long March 6 and JAXAs Epsilon, leaving it with little immediate Western commercial competition. Fireflys next vehicle, currently named MLV, is a Falcon 9 competitor with a capacity of 13 tons to LEO. ARISS conducts60-80 of these special amateur radio contacts each year between students aroundthe globe and crew members with ham radio licenses aboard the ISS. Harris Middle School, a rural public school in Spruce Pine, NC,was founded in 1916 and is one of only two middle schools in Mitchell County serving,237 students in grades six, seven, and eight. The school incorporated amateurradio related studies and activities into their existing STEM curriculum priorto this ARISS contact. This included satellite communications (frequencyDoppler affects), building UHF/VHF yagi antennas, and building an amateursatellite communication station. Students studied mathematical relationships ofradio wave properties, and gravity of orbiting bodies. Courses incorporatedtopics that included space exploration, the solar system, and Earth’s weathersystem. Students also learned more about the history of the ISS, and theaffects of living in space. For this ARISS contact, the school partnered with theCollege Foundation of Western North Carolina for the establishment of theschool’s amateur radio satellite station. This will be a direct contact via Amateur Radio allowing students to ask their questions ofAstronaut Bob Hines, amateur radio call sign KI5RQT. Local Covid-19 protocolsare adhered to as applicable for each ARISS contact. Digital Modes on Linear Sats

Information, please. I'm in my 70s, and DXCC SAT is on my bucket list. I'm slowly making progress with 61 entities/59 confirmed. Someone on the BB once suggested to me that I make use of digital modes to up my total. But ... before I do so, and also be sure to use low power on the bottom of bandpasses, I'm curious to know what kind of digital mode activity there really is on linear sats and what DX stations (in rarer entities) folks have actually been able to contact. Then and only then will I consider taking the plunge and buying software and hooking up a PC. CW and SSB are still lots of fun. I do not work FM sat.
