Perhaps not really from US sources as I would have liked. I decided to contribute my flight software and hardware designs to Open Research Institute and the repo will be available soon. My son came down with Covid last week so it slowed up things at my home and work. If anyone would like to replicate the EP firmware and hardware for Bricsat-p and Canyval-X and consider collaborating with me on improving its design for future amsat, the repo hosted by, and supported by ORI will be open to all. All hardware designs are still current. My commercial patent on the topic of synchronization of arrays of such thruster devices may be useful for those who want to build scalable (uN-s to mN-s, steerable) contraptions and they could contact GWU or myself for details. But with either of those systems the work by GSFC (Flight Dynamics treatments) show practical uses of gravity manifolds for deep space (non-GEO, cis-lunar) trajectories using the flight control system I developed. But as I was not the main developer of the actual thruster, one needs to include a thruster selection in the trade study process (PPT, MEVAT, Hall, uCAT, MEVA, ...) and use it in *pulsed* mode. For the adventurous, calculus wizardry will show benefit of store-idle-standby-run-fire modes of impulse burns quite a lot more efficiently than exoected. My lines are open. Rocket Lab's definition of "sensible cost" is $10 million. That is indeed a bargain price for a dedicated HEO mission. Do we think that AMSAT could raise that amount of money in a sensible amount of time? But I am also curious about the extent to which terrestrial HF signals can be heard well outside the bounds of the ionosphere. My guess is that if much of the long-distance terrestrial propagation we experience on HF is due to ionospheric absorption and re-radiation (i.e. setting ions in motion at an RF rate), then it might be much more transparent than we have been led to believe. I seem to recall a story about a Chinese satellite that traveled to the vicinity of the Moon and carried with it an HF receiver. A spectrum plot made by the satellite showed it was filled with HF signals originating from the Earth. 73 de John, KD2BD

So, what could we do in a geostationary orbit that won't simply be a duplication or an enhancement over what's already been done for decades? I think it would be neat to have the equivalent of a WebSDR in geostationary orbit to see exactly what can be received well beyond the Earth's ionosphere. Linking Satellites

What ever happened to the idea--I think it was floated in an AMSAT newsletter a few years ago--of linking two satellites with a combined larger footprint? This would certainly help me achieve WAS from Maine FN54, where the problem is and always be Hawaii. Speaking of WAS "SAT," a dumb question now--but will the moon ever be considered a "satellite," for the WAS SAT award? If it is, EME just might be the only way I'll make WAS SAT. I'm stuck at 49. But then again, it's "location, location, location" as real estate agents say, and I can't complain, being able to work deep into EU and rack up DXCC entities from there. DXCC SAT appears to be a realistic goal with MEO sats, given enough time and activation from rarer entities. (Thank you, K3TRM, DL4EA and 4O4A, among others!). Wes NA1ME

I was able to hear SSTV tones today from one of the RS#S satellites. What is the protocol? I tried Robot 36 and it didn’t seem to decode. Signal was strong. SSTV send was short however -- 73, ko4aqf(a)gmail.com

I'm just getting into satellite operations as a hobby. I've used the commercial satellites all through my broadcast career, but as a hobby, this is way more fun. I've read about the one ham satellite over Africa. I wonder if there plans for one over North America. I have to say using a 10 watt HT (no dual receive while transmitting) into a dual band beam (3 elements for 144mhz and 5 elements for 440mhz) all while portable is a challenge. I have been able to sort of make some kind of contact on two other birds, and ISS Sunday afternoon when it was as crowded. Hearing the quick key ups, hetrodines and even the occasional idiot that is heard whistling reminds me of CB radio in some ways. The gentleman's ways and patient operators are becoming a long lost art. For a newbie here, what portable radio do you all recommend? For permanent setups, what is recommended? Satpc32 settings question

Hello,Question regarding Satpc32 and the TS2000. The software works great most of the time. I do notice, however, that some of the settings in the TS2000 are not always saved when the rig and the software are powered down. One of those settings is the "TRACE[R]" function which typically comes on when I first power things up. Should I use:Reverse Trace? Lateral Trace? Fixing the FM Stompfest

On an AO-91 pass earlier this Sunday, I heard a partial callsign who said “Looking for initial contact.” I responded and he heard me. But then we were stomped out by the usual stations. It was the weekend; the worst time of all to be on FM. It’s hard to welcome new users to satellites when this happens. I would add: this is not the first time. Week before last we had new people, rovers, portables, and kids-at-the-mike on an AO-91 pass. They all got stomped. No QSOs heard with any of them. Some have suggested that launching more FM birds would alleviate the stompfest. But how many more birds would it take before the number of ops per pass begins to thin out? It might be a large number given the appetite among some ops for repeat QSOs with the same station again and again on every pass. Behavior mod on the part of veteran FM ops doesn’t seem to be in the cards. So what about this? Suppose the next gen FM birds were channelized? That would divide the number of ops per pass. Thoughts? ARISS conducts 60-80 of these special amateurradio contacts each year between students around the globe and crew memberswith ham radio licenses aboard the ISS. Opened in 1974, The Kopernik Observatory & Science Center (KOSC) is a non-profit informal educational institutionthat promotes interdisciplinary education in the fields of Science, Technology,Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). Through its classes, events and programs, KOSChas offered hundreds of thousands of students of all ages the opportunity toengage and actively learn a variety of STEM subjects. KOSC’s resources includethree permanent telescopes, a heliostat, weather station, three classrooms,computer lab, portable planetarium and an amateur radio station. KOSC is also thehome of the Kopernik Astronomical Society, the local astronomy club, and theBinghamton Amateur Radio Association (BARA) (callsign W2OW). KOSCoffers an outreach program to the local schools, and a STEM-based, summer campfor students between 2nd and 12th grades. This year is the 30th KOSC summerSTEM camps, and in preparation for the ARISS contact, one camp, entitled“Welcome Aboard the ISS”, showed 5th and 6th grade students what it takes tobecome an astronaut, how astronauts train for a mission and what research isbeing done on the ISS. Students are also learning about satellite orbits andradio communication. Camp activities include building a tape measure 2-meter,3-element yagi antenna and how to use it during a Fox Hunt. AzaadiSAT to be launched on 2022-08-07

On 2022-08-07 at 0348 UTC the Indian satellite AzaadiSAT of Space Kidz India is to be launched as the secundary payload on the first flight of the new SSLV rocket from Sriharikota, India. The planned orbit is circular at 356 km with inclination 37.21 degrees. AzaadiSAT carries a digital packet store and forward system, a camera and a radiation sensor. The AMSAT TAPR Banquet on Friday night was an excellent opportunity to come together with our friends at Tucson Amateur Packet Radio (TAPR) and pay tribute to Bob Bruninga, WB4APR (SK), who we lost earlier this year. I want to thank everyone who shared their stories of Bob, who has contributed so much to amateur radio and amateur radio in space. Attendance at the AMSAT Forum was fantastic. Jerry Buxton, N0JY, and Jonathan Brandenburg, KF5IDY, provided an excellent Engineering update on GOLF, our in-house developed reaction wheels, and the new Fox Plus program. Frank Karnauskas, N1UW, brought us up to speed on the AMSAT Youth Initiative program, which takes an innovative and inspiring approach to introduce youth to amateur radio in space. Last but not least, Alan Johnston, KU2Y, and his students demonstrated the CubeSat Simulator and CubeSatSim Lite, which have made a terrific impact on the STEM education community. I thank the volunteers who donated their time over the long weekend to serve as AMSAT Ambassadors at our booths. THANK YOU! 40th Anniversary of the Space Camp For those not aware, the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama, celebrated the 40th Anniversary of Space Camp on June 18, 2022. AMSAT Ambassador Tim Cunningham, N8DEU, hosted special event station K4S, demonstrating his field day amateur radio satellite station and answering questions about amateur radio in space. While Tim worked the International Space Station (ISS) several times, along with multiple contacts through other LEO satellites, the highlight of his efforts was facilitating a contact between a graduating Space Camp young lady and an astronaut aboard the ISS. Congratulations, Tim, on a job well done! An Innovation Road Map Innovation and experimentation are the cornerstones of what sets AMSAT apart in the amateur satellite community and what we need to continue to focus on in AMSAT’s future. In June 2021, AMSAT implemented a strategic plan defining who we are and where we want to go. In this plan, we affirmed our commitment to return to higher orbits and the vital role GOLF plays in helping us to develop the necessary systems and skills to take us there. In addition, we expressed our continued support in providing easily accessible amateur radio satellites in low earth orbit, encouraging the next generation of engineers, software developers, scientists, and mathematicians through STEM educational initiatives, and partnering with ARISS on human spaceflight programs. It is now time that we put that plan into action. Compliance and Open Projects – Establish export control policy and open project framework to allow AMSAT’s return to international collaboration. AMSAT is committed to complying with U.S. export controls laws and regulations, including the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR), the Export Administration Regulations (EAR), and the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) regulations. ITAR and EAR regulations govern the shipment, transfer, and access of export-controlled data, items, equipment, materials, and software to non-U.S. persons or entities (domestically and abroad). OFAC regulations impose sanctions and embargoes on transactions or exchanges with designated countries, entities, and individuals. To ensure compliance with all Export laws, AMSAT must establish an Export Control policy, including procedures for complying with Export Control laws and educating all individuals working at, with, or on behalf of AMSAT, who work with, or have access to export-controlled technical data software, materials, and equipment, on such laws, policies, and procedures. This policy should require actively managing and monitoring compliance with Export Control laws and authorizing the creation of procedures to administer major organizational functions related to export compliance. AMSAT also recognizes that a critical component of its mission is supporting fundamental research, developing relationships and participating in the worldwide scientific, amateur radio, and amateur satellite communities to further the pursuit of knowledge. Export control laws restrict foreign national access to items or information that might be contrary to U.S. interests; however, these laws include exemptions for information published or disseminated in the Public Domain. AMSAT must take advantage of these carve- outs, when available, to further its international collaboration and outreach efforts. As such, we are working on implementing the necessary online project management and collaboration tools to support our open projects and the required publication processes to share what we have learned with the world. Experimentation and Education – Develop open and sustainable CubeSat programs to provide technological experimentation and educational support in Low Earth Orbits (LEO). Low earth orbiting (LEO) satellites play a critical role in AMSAT’s future. LEO FM CubeSats provide a cheap entry point to amateur radio in space. The lower costs associated with building and launching them make them an excellent platform to support our technological experimentation and STEM education initiatives. AMSAT’s Fox Plus program will be the foundation for our future efforts in LEO. In addition, proposed orbital debris mitigation standards will require all flight systems intended to be flown above low earth orbits to be “proven” in low earth orbit first. AMSAT’s GOLF-TEE (Greater Orbit Larger Footprint - Technology Exploration Experiment) was developed to demonstrate the necessary technologies for higher orbits. Scientific Research – Develop an open CubeSat program to enable scientific research related to amateur radio above low earth orbits. As space becomes increasingly crowded, obtaining a license to launch a satellite above low earth orbit will require a reason more important than amateur radio. Moving forward, we need to incorporate missions that include benefits for the greater good of society, of which scientific research and education appear to be our easiest path. AMSAT is not a scientific research institution, but we can certainly benefit by partnering with educational institutions to study the long-term effects of radiation exposure on communication and command and control systems. For example, our partnership with Vanderbilt University during the Fox Program provides a template as we chart our return to HEO. GEO Rideshare – Develop a program to secure an amateur radio payload in geostationary orbit above North America. I am often asked, “When will AMSAT put a satellite in geostationary orbit?” The short answer is NEVER,... if we have to do it ourselves. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is not going to allow a bunch of weekend warriors to play in geostationary orbit; not to mention, the price of admission, continued operation, and indemnification is beyond our reach. So, our best opportunity is to partner with someone already going there as a secondary payload. In case you were not aware of it, the AMSAT DMR 98006 talkgroup and the US AMSAT YSF 11689 reflector have been linked together for years, making it quite simple to use either mode to cross-communicate with the other. However, the AMSAT DSTAR reflector has not been bridged into the system, so it has been isolated. But, there is great news on that front. With the great help of Craig Jump, 2M0JUM, that problem seems to be solved. Craig has been linked his XLX606 DSTAR reflector to the AMSAT reflector, and has also bridged the DSTAR reflector to the AMSAT DMR 98006 talkgroup. This means that users can now use DMR, YSF-Fusion or DSTAR and seamlessly communicate with anyone on any of these technologies. As with all things digital, users may want to give the system one or two extra seconds when they key up so all the links are fully engaged before talking - just to ensure they don't cut off the first syllable of their transmission. However, this been the case with DMR and YSF only links for years. Testing is still underway so it is possible that the system could be temporarily disabled at times. The planned orbit is circular at 356 km with inclination 37.21 degrees. AzaadiSAT carries a digital packet store and forward system, a camera and a radiation sensor. One of those will be the 3U cubesat KAI 1, aka KNITU-KAI, NILAKT DOSAAF LLC, ANO DPO "KIRO". Its callsign will be RS26S. It carries a 145/435 MHz repeater, panoramic cameras and a temperature meter based on a fiber Bragg grating. Currently no further details are available. Dear All, Tomorrow early morning a team of 6 OM’s are flying to 3B9 with 3 QO-100 portable ground stations, they will be active there until the 9th of August. They should be operational late afternoon (3B9 time GMT +4) tomorrow and will open 3B9 on QO-100 as a first. I guess they will have quite huge pile-ups awaiting them. Also an Echolink node will be installed at Robert’s QTH (3B8FR), the only permanent HAM on 3B9, to links Reunion (FR), Mauritius (3B8) and Rodrigues (3B9), basically our remote islands in a regional network, but also worldwide. Using observations from the SATNOGS network and https://www.amsat.org/status/, AO-27 currently appears to be on during DESCENDING node passes starting at about 80N latitude to about 68N (repeater only), and from about 02S latitude to about 16S latitude (KISS telemetry + repeater). This means the satellite may be accessible for stations located far north (Scandinavia, Northern UK, Northern Canada, Alaska) and for Southern Hemisphere stations (portions of southern Africa, S America, Indonesia, Australia. The available footprint will continue to move slowly south (along the orbital path) for the time being until the onboard timer is reset. We continue to solicit reception reports, especially of the on and/or off times for the FM repeater with the station's location (lat/lon or 6-character grid square). ARISS News Release No.22-44 Dave Jordan, AA4KN ARISS PR aa4kn(a)amsat.org FORIMMEDIATE RELEASE ARISSContact is Scheduled with Scouts at The Swiss National Scout Jamboree in the Goms Valley,Urlichen Switzerland August1, 2022—Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) has receivedschedule confirmation for an ARISS radio contact between an astronaut aboardthe International Space Station (ISS) and Swiss scouts at their national scoutjamboree occurring in Goms Valley. ARISS conducts 60-80 of these special amateurradio contacts each year between students around the globe and crew memberswith ham radio licenses aboard the ISS. The Swiss Guide and Scout Movement, Bern, Switzerland is hostingthis ARISS contact for scouts that are attending the two-week-long Swissnational scout jamboree MOVA in the Goms Valley. About 35,000 scoutsparticipate in this jamboree, coming from all over the country. This ARISScontact will have an audience consisting of male and female scouts and leaders,ages ranging between 7 and 28 years with various educational levels and STEMdisciplines. Scouts will be participating in radio workshops (radio propagationand radio operation) during the jamboree. These workshops include Earth-Moon-Earthcommunication, and space communication technology. In the days that led up tothe ISS contact, scouts have participated in demonstrations of amateur radio onthe HF, VHF, and UHF ham bands that included their participated in amateurradio traffic. English, French, Italian and German are the languages expectedto be used during the contact. This will be a direct contact via Amateur Radio allowing students to ask their questions ofAstronaut Samantha Cristoforetti, amateur radio call sign IZØUDF. LocalCovid-19 protocols are adhered to as applicable for each ARISS contact. Thedownlink frequency for this contact is 145.800 MHZ and may be heard bylisteners that are within the ISS-footprint that also encompasses the relayground station. The amateur radio ground station for this contactis in Goms Valley near Urlichen, Switzerland. Amateur radio operators usingcall sign HB9JAM, will operate the ground station to establish and maintain theISS connection.
