Hi all, Current predictions for Falconsat-3 reentry seem to converge around late (UTC) 21 Jan 2023 to early (UTC) 22 Jan 2023. Therefore, I plan to command TX ON about 1910 UTC today, 19 Jan 2023, with battery management OFF. In recent weeks, it has survived this for 24-30 hours--at which time I have turned it OFF. So, this will be right on the margins for battery vs. reentry, but we're going to "flame out" either way :) Good luck with listening over the next couple of days.. Mark, Thanks for the infos. On my side I am already on a 24/7 watch for F3 re-entry. For all, I wish also to confirm that the Mauritius Amateur Radio Society (MARS) will issue a special Award for the last formal (AMSAT Leaderboard/Satnogs) reported signals from F3, additionally a MO-112 postal first day cover will be sent to the winner with the certificate. The purpose is to encourage all to get the maximum of information and try to locate the approximate re-entry location of F3 and compare same with calculated one. Amazing the rotor worked this long with no problems or maintenance. Has anyone found a video on the web of disassembly and re-assembly of the rotor, with important points to be aware of? I only want to disassemble just enough to work on the pot and its connecting wires. From my testing I'm sure it's a combination of bad pot and connecting wires. Issue only manifests itself from around 300 to 0 degrees azimuth with it occurring at different spots in that location depending on whether it's rotating clockwise or counter clockwise . The ohms reading across pins one and three drops from 500 ohms to around 200 ohms or less. Testing resistance between pins 1 and 2 when rotating, smooth 0 to 500 ohms, Between pins 2 and 3 when rotating is where I get the resistance hiccup. It won't keep me off the birds, but I'll mainly only be able to do satellite passes that are east of me until fixed. KB7ADL

Vince, I have repaired several 5400 rotators (I no longer own one). The pot can often be repaired. There is a small wire connecting the center of the pot to the solder lug (this will make sense when you see it). The wire twists as the pot and rotator rotate. It will often fail at the solder joint making intermittent contact causing the position indication to jump and/or have dead zones. Replace the small wire and it will work another 10 years or so. They are not the same pots being used in the 5500. The AC version of the 5500 uses a more traditional looking pot. They are both 500 Ohm wirewound pots. I have not been inside the even newer 5500DC. The last time I called (long ago) Yaesu was still willing to sell either. An exact replacement is available for the pot in the 5500 on eBay for less money, but you have to wait for shipping. Feel free to reply and I will dig up the link. It is possible to substitute a ‘standard’ 500 Ohm pot into the 5500. The biggest gotcha for ISSDector is that it is 100% dependent on a cell data connection. Even if you "preload" it, it will likely lose all predictions if you are offline. That being said, I still use it more than Look4Sat, but keep it around for when I go off grid. If any crewmember is so inclined, all they have to do is pick up the microphone, raise the volume up, and talk on the crossband repeater. So give a listen, you just never know. ####################################################################################################################################### Comments on making general contacts I have been seeing a lot of traffic on Facebook and I suspect on other social media sites with people asking why they are not hearing the crew make general contacts. First off the crew is very busy on the ISS and they simply may not have the time to just pick up the microphone and talk. Also, one needs to be aware of their normal daily schedule. I have listed below the constraints that we at ARISS have to follow in order to schedule the school contacts. Hopefully this will help you better schedule your opportunities. Typical daily schedule Wakeup to Workday start= 1.5 hours Workday start to Workday end=12 hours Workday end to Sleep= 2 hours Sleep to wakeup= 8.5 hours The crew's usual waking period is 0730 - 1930 UTC. The most common times to find a crew member making casual periods are about one hour after waking and before sleeping, when they have personal time. They're usually free most of the weekend, as well. SSTV events are not that often. So please check out https://www.ariss.org/ for the latest information or watch for the ARISS announcements. And don’t forget that the packet system is active. As always, if there is an EVA, a docking, or an undocking; the ARISS radios are turned off as part of the safety protocol. ARISS News Release No.23-01 Dave Jordan, AA4KN ARISS PR aa4kn(a)amsat.org FORIMMEDIATE RELEASE ARISSContact is Scheduled with Students at Escola Secundária de Lagoa, Lagoa, Azores-Portugal January17, 2023—Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) has receivedschedule confirmation for an ARISS radio contact between an astronaut aboardthe International Space Station (ISS) and students at the Escola Secundária deLagoa located in Lagoa, Azores. ARISSconducts 60-80 of these special amateur radio contacts each year betweenstudents around the globe and crew members with ham radio licenses aboard theISS. Escola Secundária de Lagoa (Lagoa Secondary School), S. Miguelisland at Azores – Portugal has more than 900 students, 120 teachers and about30 employees and serves students in 7th through 12th grades. Lagoa SecondarySchool’s Astronomy and Geocaching Club is hosting this ARISS contact involvinga core group of 11th and 12th grade students studying theScience Curriculum (Mathematics and Physics) and other students in the 10th,11th and 12th grades. In addition to the school’s STEM curriculum, students areengaged in astrophysics activities as members of the Astronomy and GeocachingClub. To further a deeper scientific engagement and literacy in the community,the school created the Project ISU (in search of the uncertain) that has themain purpose of putting forward space knowledge and know-how. Partnering organizationsinclude the national authority for communications in Portugal (ANACOM),providing facilities and expertise for the contact, the Science Center EXPOLABsupporting students’ activities related to space and rockets, the AstronomicalObservatory of Santana Açores providing a mobile planetarium and telescopes forsolar observation, and City Hall of Lagoa for logistical facilitation. This will be a telebridge Contact via Amateur Radio and students will take turnsasking their questions of Astronaut Josh Cassada, amateur radio call sign KI5CRH.The downlink frequency for this contact is 145.800 MHZ and may be heard bylisteners that are within the ISS-footprint that also encompasses thetelebridge station. The ARISS amateur radio ground station(telebridge station) for this contact is in Casale Monferrato, Italy. Theamateur radio volunteer team at the station will use the callsign IK1SLD, toestablish and maintain the ISS connection. I've been using ISS Detector pro for years.It's accurate.When it starts beeping to tell me a satellite is about to be visible, you can count on it being there.One time, I was driving can in Ann arbor.It started beeping to let me know that the ISS was about to appear.So I mentioned it to my passenger.2 minutes later, it passed directly overhead.My passenger was impressed. Clint: I use ISS Detector. I previously used AMSAT Droid Free. What is a very good satellite pass prediction app for Android smartphone users? I have been recommending AMSATDroidFree - which I use on a Kindle Fire tablet. If any crewmember is so inclined, all they have to do is pick up the microphone, raise the volume up, and talk on the crossband repeater. So give a listen, you just never know. ####################################################################################################################################### Comments on making general contacts I have been seeing a lot of traffic on Facebook and I suspect on other social media sites with people asking why they are not hearing the crew make general contacts. First off the crew is very busy on the ISS and they simply may not have the time to just pick up the microphone and talk. Also, one needs to be aware of their normal daily schedule. I have listed below the constraints that we at ARISS have to follow in order to schedule the school contacts. Hopefully this will help you better schedule your opportunities. Typical daily schedule Wakeup to Workday start= 1.5 hours Workday start to Workday end=12 hours Workday end to Sleep= 2 hours Sleep to wakeup= 8.5 hours The crew's usual waking period is 0730 - 1930 UTC. The most common times to find a crew member making casual periods are about one hour after waking and before sleeping, when they have personal time. They're usually free most of the weekend, as well. SSTV events are not that often. So please check out https://www.ariss.org/ for the latest information or watch for the ARISS announcements. And don’t forget that the packet system is active. As always, if there is an EVA, a docking, or an undocking; the ARISS radios are turned off as part of the safety protocol.
