WISP on 64-bits WIndows

Has anyone successfully requested directory fill from Falconsat-3 using Windows 64-bits? It seems that WISP sends a corrupt request to the satellite on Windows 64-bits. I have tried running WISP on two different machines. Both with Windows 64-bits -- one running Windows 7 64-bits and the other running Windows 10 64-bits. On both, every time MSPE requests a directory fill, I get a "NO -5 PY2SDR" response from the satellite. Roland PY4ZBZ tried on his 32-bits Windows 10 system and the satellite replies with a OK. Comparing the directory fill request packet sent to the satellite by my station and Roland's, it seems that, on my station, WISP is corrupting the directory hole pair data and also introducing one more byte to the request. This is PY4ZBZ (good) request: 10 F4 00 42 8F E5 59 FF FF FF 7F 0D 0A This is PY2SDR (bad) request: 10 F4 00 BF 12 E0 59 FF FF FF FF FF FF 7F 73, Edson PY2SDR

JOTA 2017 on Satellite.

Jamboree on the Air is this weekend and I am sure there are going to be a number of operators on Satellite in support of various Scout organizations all over North America. If you have not already, find one near you and volunteer your services to introduce our fun and challenging aspect of Amateur Radio to some youngsters (and adult leaders alike). Personally I will be in support of Circle Ten Council in Dallas EM12, with a JOTA activation in support of a new branch of BSA called STEM Scouts. Our group will be using borrowed call N5BSA and running a limited schedule from 1500-1900Z on October 21. Look for us and give a shout if you do. Tom Schuessler N5HYP

Wisp TNC Commands?

All: Is there a way to monitor the commands Wisp sends to a TNC during startup? I searched the Wisp directories and couldn't find anything. A utility program that monitors commands being sent to the TNC would be helpful. Thought of using a simple terminal program along with a comport splitter of some kind, but not sure if that would work. Perhaps there's a list of Wisp TNC commands for different TNC's somewhere on the web. Thanks, Tony -K2MO

Countdown to Launch: RadFxSat (Fox-1B)

Only three weeks remain until the next AMSAT Fox-1 satellite launches! RadFxSat (Fox-1B) is scheduled for launch at 01:47 PST (09:47 UTC) on November 10, 2017. RadFxSat is one of four CubeSats making up the NASA ELaNa XIV mission, riding as secondary payloads aboard the Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS)-1 mission. JPSS-1 will launch on a Delta II from Vandenberg Air Force Base, California. RadFxSat is a partnership with Vanderbilt University ISDE and hosts four payloads for the study of radiation effects on commercial off the shelf components. RadFxSat features the Fox-1 style FM U/v repeater with an uplink on 435.250 MHz (67.0 Hz CTCSS) and a downlink on 145.960 MHz. Satellite and experiment telemetry will be downlinked via the “DUV” subaudible telemetry stream and can be decoded with the FoxTelem software. https://www.amsat.org/countdown-to-launch-radfxsat-fox-1b/

These should be popular sats. The inclination is 43 degrees so they will come over central USA latitudes seven times a day each. We just need more people using them with SSB radios. School Information: Istituto Scolastico Comprensivo "Nardi" It hosts about 450 students, for a total of 19 classes, placed on two school placements, one north and one south of town. A section have a musical address and the students study a musical instrument, in addition to the regular daily curriculum, one of the activities that accompany the individual study of an instrument, the boys play in the orchestra and this activity particularly promotes the cohesion of the group and offers A social alternative. The "middle school" age group requires a special commitment and expose itself to a charge of empathy such as to pass on our children the passion for knowledge, study and curiosity towards everything that is being presented to us. Our school is very committed to the issues surrounding the environment, research and scientific evolution, communication and legality. Large space is reserved for languages: music, motor, chart through multimedia equipment and radio. It actively collaborates with the various educational agencies of the territory and with the local body that allow us to expand our training offer and favor the social development of our boys. I.C. Worked KB6LTY on both CAS-4A and CAS-4B this morning with very strong signals even though I only had a 1 degree max elevation pass on CAS-4b and a max elevation of 4 degrees on CAS-4A. Monitoring 9600 baud Sats with PK-96 TNC

All: Need advice from the reflectors TNC Guru. I have a Timewave PK-96 in the shack and would like to test the modems receive capability by monitoring 9600 baud satellites. I figured it should be possible to monitor incoming packets with a simple terminal program, but after trying Tigersat and others, I was not able to decode anything. The same radio worked fine with UZ7HO's Soundmodem. I used the terminal program to set the TNC in 9600 bd mode and set the mon command to monitor UI frames. Maybe I'm missing something. Tony

The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 12:49 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between OR4ISS and EI2SDR at Tallaght Community School, Dublin, Ireland and telebridge via EI2SDR and the Gymnasium Räddningsgymnasiet Sando, Sandöverken, Sweden. The contact should be audible over portions of Ireland and adjacent areas. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. The school was chosen for the event as it is in a disadvantaged area and the school works hard to prepare and encourage students to pursue some form of further education. The school has 900 students aged 12 to 18 years and all will take part in the event. All students have studied about the ISS and were given an opportunity to submit questions to be selected. Sandö is located about 400 Km to the North of Stockholm. The participating schools are Räddningsgymnasiet Sandö, Minerva school Ånge and the NTI Gymnasium Sundsvall. Together they count 550 students ranging from ages 12 to 19. Sandö Räddningsgymnasium is close to nature and overlooks a beautiful fjord. Besides teaching science programs, the gymnasium offers courses in civil crisis management, firefighting as well as search and rescue. Students are prepared for a career as teachers, nurses, psychologist, firemen, fire engineers and policemen. Together with the Folke Bernadotte academy as well as other governmental organisations, they create an understanding of and a preparedness for international assignments. Part of the education is that the students travel around the world to learn from existing fire and rescue situations. Amateur Radio is also included in the student's graduate projects. The NTI Gymnasium Sundsvall or the Northern Technical institute, established 1968 offers courses in digital techniques, internet technology and other forms of digital communication. The institute has about 250 students. Minerva school Ånge teaches younger students from age 12 to 15 and has of about 200 students enrolled. Decoding AO-73 Funcube BPSK 1200

Hello Working my way down a list of satellites and now it is time to try AO-73 Funcube I have a Funcube Dongle Pro + which I can pipe to PSK decoder I also have a Tigertronics Singalink and a ICOM706 MKII G with doppler tracking Will the 1200 baud BPSK go ok through the Tigertronics Signalink ? Dave, I some sense you are right, but this is a weak signal mode usable only when the satellite is far away so the Doppler shift change each second is very small. It isn’t the power being transmitted, but the power received at the satellite that matters, and it was being used only when the satellite was near maximum range. There were other signals on the transponder, both SSB and CW, that were so strong they were causing both amplitude changes and “FMing” of my downlink signal. During preliminary testing with the satellite near, I observed no noticeable changes to other signals in the passband when my signal was strong. Strong CW and SSB signals from others, due to their amplitude changes did produce noticeable changes to my downlink. This could be why we were not successful on AO-7, but were successful on our first try on FO-29, which is more tolerant of other strong signals on the passband. Some may think it is experimental but I personally find it very disruptive to use certain digital modes on satellites. It is more disturbing when the stations performing these "experiments" fail to minimize their station ERP to a reasonable level. Tonight on FO-29 I witnessed first hand how disruptive it is when a station decides to experiment with MSK144 while others are trying to use the shared transponder resource. Some of these modes are 100% duty cycle for periods, then switch off, and back on again in a sequence. This doesn't seem very compatible with your typical satellite transponder. For the life of me I cannot figure out why someone would even think about attempting these modes on AO-7 when the transponder's more sensitive nature is common knowledge. 73 Clayton W5PFG

Falconsat 9k6

Reading the mail over the last week re Falconsat reception. Not listened personally, but my thoughts went back to the early days of 9k6 when we upgraded the filters on our rigs to 15kHz for optimum performance for 9k6. These days with SDR's and the nice software packages that are available you can "make you own" filters for the various digital modes currently flying, 4k8, 9k6 and 19k2. I have found 15Khz is optimal for most of the current 9k6 G3RUH satellite downlinks and 20kHz for the 9k6 GMSK Downlinks. Using Funcube Dongle Pro+ and SDR Console Version 3.0 with UZ7HO Decoder. As yet cannot vouch for Falconsat. Colin VK5HI.

Alaskan arrow for sale

I have a split boom Alaskan arrow that needs a new home. Everything on it is in good shape, no bent/cracked elements etc. I have had it since last December, and used it extensively on many of the trips during which some of you might have worked me. Since then I have gotten a regular length arrow, which fits better in the backseat of my car while assembled, and the Alaskan has set unused for several months. I have a Slik tripod bag for storage, the antenna, and foam grip. Asking price is $115 shipped in the US (I’d consider international, but shipping would depend on where it was going). I own a Kenwood TS-2000 and that is my main satellite rig. The birdie will affect any radio near the TS-2000 on 436.795 ( I have tried that ) so for me using a totally different radio is the best way to work SO-50. In my case I use a Yaesu FT-5200, I paid $100 for it and it's a great FM fullduplex mobile radio, I also have the Icom IC-w32a but I prefer to use the FT-5200. So we set out to configure our satellite stations to use WSJT-X with FT8. With some configuration advice from W0DHB, we each got our systems configured. Mine (W5RKN) is a Flex-6500 with two DEMI transverters running SmartSDR, SatPC32, FlexSATPC, and WSJT-X. Rick?s (W2JAZ) is a Flex-5000 with U/V module, running PowerSDR, SatPC32, FlexSATPC, and WSJT-X. After a couple runs on AO-7 without success, we tried again tonight on the 0220Z (14 Oct) pass of FO-29. I started out at my AOS calling CQ W5RKN EM10. After several transmissions without success, the reply W5RKN W2JAZ FN29 popped up on the screen. Then followed the usual signal report, RRR and 73 transmissions. As soon as I can figure out the appropriate fields for LoTW, we?ll log the QSO there. Next week I'll continue a travel path north of the grids I worked this past week. This area is known as "The Texas Panhandle." Many grid lines are easily accessible and follow major roads, so I'll likely be on two grids per pass. This trip marks six years of operating from these grids since I first started roving on AO-51. Listen for me on evening FM sat passes. I'll try to be most consistent operating those. I like to work FO-29 passes with good coverage coast-to-coast, so you might listen for me there as well. WSJT-X FT8 QSO confirmed between W2JAZ and W5RKN on FO-29

A few days ago, Rick, W2JAZ, asked me if the new, short, weak signal protocol, FT8, could be used on satellites. I posited it might work near AOS or LOS where the Doppler corrections are small. FT8 is operationally similar to the older protocols but four times faster (15-second T/R sequences) and less sensitive by a few dB. So we set out to configure our satellite stations to use WSJT-X with FT8. With some configuration advice from W0DHB, we each got our systems configured. Mine (W5RKN) is a Flex-6500 with two DEMI transverters running SmartSDR, SatPC32, FlexSATPC, and WSJT-X. Rick’s (W2JAZ) is a Flex-5000 with U/V module, running PowerSDR, SatPC32, FlexSATPC, and WSJT-X. After a couple runs on AO-7 without success, we tried again tonight on the 0220Z (14 Oct) pass of FO-29. I started out at my AOS calling CQ W5RKN EM10. After several transmissions without success, the reply W5RKN W2JAZ FN29 popped up on the screen. Then followed the usual signal report, RRR and 73 transmissions. As soon as I can figure out the appropriate fields for LoTW, we’ll log the QSO there. I am not aware of other WSJT-X QSOs on the satellites, so I’d be interested in other’s experiences, Ron and Rick

I understood that AO-7 is for the moment still in complete sunlight and as such, should be switching back and forth between Mode A/B every 24 hours or so.. I am a newbie to satellites. I have only worked the FM birds using handie talkies and arrow antenna. I wanted to start working in doors with my TS-2000. On SO-50 downlink 436.795 it has a bad birdie that wipes everything. Full squelch will not stop it. I have disconnected the antenna and still there. On other radios it is not there, so cannot be RFI. Has anyone ever heard of TS-2000s that have this? Any ideas of something that can be done to fix? Even sending it in to Kenwood Service. Cannot work SO-50 with it this way. TNX 73 Mike K4MIA

9100 CAT tuning doppler

Maybe somebody can help me out. I am switching out computers and installed SatPC32 on the other machine. It's been a while since being on the satellites and forgot some operating functions with the SW. When SatPC32 is correcting for doppler does both Uplink/downlink frequencies change on the radio? Or just uplink? I have "At Satellite doppler" enabled. I noticed the only one changing was the uplink. Any help? Thanks, Todd AL7PX

Here is a summary of my testing 1. I could not get my ICOM 910H to produce a strong enough signal to prove my Signalink USB on 9k6 with soundmodem 2. I moved across to SDR - An AirSpy Mini and then a funcube dongle using SDR# 3. I Installed direwolf for windows and modified the config file to VB audio cable at 9k6 4. I Enetered my APRS-IS details as well 5. I started direworlf from the command line with the APRS-IS debug flag 6. I tracked Falconsat-3 manually in SDR# fitting just the passband 7. Direwolf through VB Audio started to finally pick up Falconsat-3 Improvements 1. Add doppler tracking to SDR# 2. Add turnstile antenna 3. Add preamp 4. Retire analogue radio idea Andrew VK4TEC

SatPC32 Yaesu rotor not registering 180 degree properly

Hello, I am attempting to use SatPC32 12.8c on Windows 7 to control a Yaesu GS-232 rotor to track my university's cubesat. All connections have been doubled checked for accuracy. In the setup, the 180 degrees max elevation is selected, along with the correct setup for the com port, and the rotor interface is set to Yaesu GS232. For some reason, the software is only registering that the rotor has 90 degrees of elevation still. Meaning that when the rotor controller reads 180 degrees, the software reads 90 degrees. Similarly, when the controller reads 45 degrees, the software reads 90. It seems that all built in software settings have been explored and a solution for this problem cannot be found. I'm using the AirSpy (not mini) with SDR#. Doppler tuning with homebrew software. Haven't noticed lost packets when the SDR freq changes, but will be on the lookout for that. The audio loopback is Virtual Audio Cable. SSB Preamp Rotator is a G5500 and LVB Tracker controlled by my homebrew software. (I really like the LVB Tracker!) Sound modem is Dire Wolf which feeds APRS-IS. At the present time I'm just watching the packets scroll by on the Dire Wolf display. Falconsat3 ASTARS Network Concept

Falconsat3 brings back a great satellite capability for emergency response traffic into and out of remote disaster areas. Its file store and forward BBS using the PACSAT protocol is ideal for getting multiline messages, and pictures and data out of an area. Amateur radio Sateliltes sort of abandoned this concept with the rise of the internet. But we also now have the Internet and can integrate a worldwide collection of satstations capturing all the downlink PACSAT BBS packets and building a WEB portal on the ground that always mirrors the traffic on the bird. Imagine that a remote operator can post a photo or file that can be read on a Falconsat WEB portal by FEMA or emergency operators back here anytime, anywhere. The concept is suggested on this page: http://aprs.org/PFS3.html All we need is someone to write the internet server that collects the BBS packets from all the ground stations like the APRS-IS already does for APRS, but this new PACSAT-IS would be just for PACSAT BBS traffic. Then someone to collect the data and write the WEB Portal. Then people to put up satgates (hopefully using omni antennas) and with enough stations, all packets could be collected. Anyway, I created the above web page to kind of serve as a target for this exciting new Amateur Radio capability. So even stations that are using OMNI antennas now and only decoding a few packets per pass, we need to understand how well this works for high elevation passes. Even this sparse data is good data. Remember, with a standard TNC all you are seeing are the few UI packets in the downlink. I think if you set KISS mode, you will be flooded with all the streaming BBS data too. Yes, Dire Wolf runs on Windows. My doppler correction is with homebrew software. Falconsat-3: Two Rigs, One TNC

All: I have the opportunity to purchase a used Timewave PK-96 USB TNC for a very reasonable price. I have 2 9600 baud radios which will do nicely for up-link and down-link. I plan on wiring the TNC for both rigs by connecting the TNC's RX pins to one radio and the TX pins to the other. Before I do so, is there anything I should know before trying this setup with Wisp? Anyone using the PK-96 USB? For what it's worth, I'm told a 9600 baud TNC will pop up on eBay now and then. It's worth a look for those interested in Falconsat. 73, Tony -K2MO

Be very careful about "Doppler correction" for digital modes. >Falconsat just went over >435.111 MHz to 435.095 MHz doppler corrected using MacDoppler... Digital modes usually cannot stand the phase shift that occurs every time a radio steps in frequency. Those bits are lost. If you set to 100 Hz steps, over the full 18 kHz of Doppler, then 180 times during the pass, you are *destroying* the data you are trying to decode. So it is better to maybe step every 1 KHz and only have 18 blackouts instead of 180. Assuming the decoder can still work with up to 500 Hz offset. Doppler stepping is very helpful for SSB voice modes. But disasterous for digital. That is for step tuned radios anyway.... I assume smart Doppler correction in DSP receivers work around this problem? Bob, WB4aPR

LNA Preamps by all means are required. But I am curious. It would seem that the turnstyle cannot have any more gain than a simple dipole (2.3 dBi) circular, but broadside to each dipole, it should have a net -0.7 dbi since one dipole is contributing nothing and power is split - 3dB between them. Yes, it gives 2.3 dbi circular polarization gain overhead which reduces fading, but has little gain in the quadrant directions. An infinite reflector can gain another 3 dB but this is not achieved with a simple reflector element. On the other hand, a vertical 1/4 wave doesn't do any better. But if the vertical is made 3/4 waves long, (about 20" tall for UHF) and is placed over a good sized ground plane, then the gain is over 7 dBi above about 30 degrees. That's the good news, but the bad news is that Sateliltes only spend about 30% of their total time in view above about 22 degrees as shown on this page: http://aprs.org/LEO-tracking.html But the high elevation gain of the simple 3/4 wave vertical above 30 degrees is shown about 80% down this very long page: http://aprs.org/astars.html As an old fud, I hold to this firmly held belief about the same as other old fud's cling to theirs, so I hope someday to actually make some real comparisions instead of just talking about it. But here is my bottom line, Turnstyles and egg beaters (in my opinion) are excellent omni directional cross polarized antennas for satellite work... but equally poor in all directions. In other words, they sacrifice gain when the satellite is higher and much close, for gain at the horizon where they can never possibly hear a weak satellite anway. So I like the reverse. Sacrificing gain at the horizon, where I can't hear them anyway, for higher gain higher up when they are closer and give a 5 dB stronger signal. So for a simple quick test, put up a 19" quarter wave whip over a ground plane and it will give you 5 dBi gain on VHF above about 15 degrees and 7 dBi gain on UHF above about 20 degrees. Your mileage may vary. Signalink Modification for 9600 baud

based on discussion with a technician at Tigertronics, the USB signalink will not allow 9600 baud packet due to the frequency response is too narrow. He said none of the commercial external soundcards will work with 9600 bd packet. The only option is to construct a circuit, or use a 9600 baud TNC. (not too many options on that front.) the Tigertronics website is a bit miss-leading because it ref. 9600 baud on its wiring diagram. Mine is setup for the 6pin miniDin connector(the pin 4 - for 9600 bd on my radio dataport- is not connected) for my FT 847. At this time I can only decode by connecting the 9600 pin on my radio (dataport) to a line-in to my Laptop soundcard (and not using a isolation circuit). I am amazed at the radios, both analog and software defined and decoders tnc’s and programs that are out there I really can’t be bothered mapping what works with what I am convinced dire wolf is the best software defined decoder. It has been proved against a TNC I have a Mac Laptop and a Windows Laptop, perl to interface the two MacDoppler author won’t do TCP IP Freq adjustment and Alex is stuck on TCP IP doppler adjustment I just want a single LINUX / Mac based solution that does + Satellite tracking + Doppler Correction + Rotator control + Demods 1k2 9k6 + And passes it to the internet To do this I have stuff everywhere and its messy I am hoping one day that will change Why can’t we have TCP/IP radios ? that demod and doppler correct and decode . Each year, ARISS provides tens of thousands of students with oppor- tunities to learn about space technologies and space communications through the exploration of Amateur Radio. Hi Christy, Correct, pin 4 on the 6 pin mini-din to Signalink SPKR pin. With the IC-9100, for example, it must be set to FMD (FM Data). Looks like the FT-847 needs menu #23 (Pkt-Rate) set to 9600. The cable I'm using is the SL-CAB6PM. This has all 6 wires connected. I was using it with a FT-847 when I had one. Plugs straight into the IC-9100. Just need to change the Signalink jumper from 5 to 4. I'm still yet to try TX. Signalink Modification for 9600 baud

All: Has anyone modified a Signalink interface to work 9600 baud satellites? It's my understanding that transformers and other isolation components introduce phase distortion making the unit inoperable for 9600 baud operation. Has anyone tried the stock USB unit with the built-in sound card on terrestrial 9600 baud packet? Tony -K2MO

Educators overwhelmingly report that student participation in the ARISS program inspires an interest in STEM subjects and in STEM careers. Ninety-two percent of educators who have participated in the program have indicated that ARISS provided ideas for encourag- ing student exploration, discussion, and participation, and 78 percent said that ARISS was effective in stimulating student interest in STEM. ARISS is looking for organizations that will draw large numbers of participants and integrate the contact into a well-developed education plan. Students can learn about satellite communications, wireless technology, science research conducted on the space station, what it is like to work in space, radio science, and any related STEM subject. Students learn to use Amateur Radio to talk directly to an astronaut and ask their STEM-related questions. ARISS will help educational organizations locate Amateur Radio groups who can assist with equipment for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for students. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at The Alice Smith School Primary Campus, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on 11 Oct. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 15:24 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between OR4ISS and 9M2RPN. The contact should be audible over portions of Malaysia and adjacent areas. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. The Alice Smith School, established since 1946 in Malaysia is one of the oldest British international schools in Asia. The school is a not-for-profit educational foundation situated on two campuses. The Primary Campus is at Jalan Bellamy and the Secondary Campus on Jalan Equine. The Alice Smith School follows the English National Curriculum with a strong international flavour. In 2011, the school was one of the first in Asia to be fully accredited as a British School Overseas by the Department for Education in London. 'Excellent' was the grade given in the most recent British Schools Overseas report for both the Primary and Secondary School Campuses by Tribal, a DfE approved inspectorate. VUCC-R SAT!!

After 6+ years of casual Roving, I finally made it to VUCC-R Satellite! My friend John K8YSE, who got me started on this, was the QSO that put me at #100 when he called me on SO50 yesterday at the EN72/73 Line. Thanks to John and everyone else that put me in their Log on SATs to reach this goal. More to come since my joy is to give "new ones" to fellow SAT Ops. 73, Bob K8BL

FS: Jetstream dualband yagi

I have for sale the Jetstream JTBM270 dualband yagi. It has 3 elements on 2m and 5 elements on 70cm on a 3 3/4 foot long boom. The elements use wingnuts to attach to the boom which makes it very easy to assemble and disassemble for portable operations. I have used it on the satellites from my home QTH with good results. These sell new for $80, I am asking $50 shipped, and will include a N male to SO239 connector as this yagi uses an N connector. I can take paypal/check/mo. 73 John AF5CC
