Greetings, On Monday, October 9th, I will be giving a presentation at the Richardson (Texas) Wireless Klub on how to get started communicating through amateur satellites. I will focus particularly on the FM transponder satellites. After the presentation, I'll present a live demonstration, weather permitting, by working the 0119 UTC (October 10th) pass of SO-50. Falconsat-3: Directory Request Error

When I request a directory fill from Falconsat-3 using WISP, I'm getting a NO -5 PY2SDR Directory request error. Does anyone know what does this error means and what I should to recover from it? My WISP install is fresh and I don't have any directory entries from the satellite. 73, Edson PY2SDR

An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Elementary School "21st of May", Podgorica, Montenegro on 11 Oct. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 11:48 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between OR4ISS and 4O0ISS. The contact should be audible over Montenegro and adjacent areas. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. Primary School '21 May' Podgorica was opened on 21st may 2010, the marking date of the independence in Montenegro. In the first year of its operation, the school enrolled 540 students to attend classes given for the first nine years of their formal education. But the number of enrolled students is constantly increasing on daily basis, and thus enumerating 920 students today. Although opened seven years ago, this is still the youngest educational institution in Podgorica with classrooms and other facilities equipped with most modern teaching aids. The school promotes many extracurricullar activities and after school clubs: choir, chess club, learning foreign languages, acting, literary circle. The school sports club is characterized by having departments in football, basketball and volleyball. Teaching process is attended on regular daily basis by 20 pupils with special educational needs, and 25 pupils, members of the Roma population, side by side with the rest of the students who gain their primary education in this institution. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. What happens if a space rock hits that little space ship in a certain place, and breaks something inside there, what do the astronauts do? 2. Do you have some funny moments in non-gravity space? 3. Do you listen to music in the space? 4. What did you feel like the first time you went to space? 5. How do you take a shower? 6. Success with Wisp, Soundmodem and VSP

All: Andy's (UZ7HO) current Wisp setup seems to be working with Falconsat-3. It consists of his full-duplex version of Soundmodem and HW-VSP-3. I had the opportunity to run a test this afternoon and I did see N8MH and KO4MA in the Wisp queue so the VSP link is working. Wisp automatically sent auto-fill requests as well. Unfortunately, the pass was just a few degrees above the horizon so comms didn't last very long. For those interested, follow the download links below. FalconSat-3 and LOTW?

Hi! Now that FalconSat-3 has been open for amateur use over the past couple of weeks, there have been reports of activity from different parts of the world - mailbox use, as well as the digipeater. Since there have been QSOs made through the FalconSat-3 digipeater, it would be nice to have this satellite added to Logbook of the World. Since it appears ARRL defers to AMSAT when it comes to adding satellites to LOTW, has AMSAT made a request to get FalconSat-3 added to LOTW? If not, what is holding up that request? If the satellite's name is too long for the LOTW database, using FS-3 or FS3 seems like a reasonable option for SAT_NAME in our ADIF files. Thanks, and 73! September 10, 2017 To All RADIO AMATEURS BID: $ANS-281.01 ARISS One Step Closer to Flying New Equipment to ISS On behalf of the ARISS International team, I am proud to announce that on Friday September 29th the ARISS team submitted the InterOperable Radio System (IORS) Safety Data Package to NASA for review! Our next step in this process is the Safety Review, which is planned for November 2. Submitting this was a phenomenal accomplishment!! Particularly since the entire Safety Data Package was developed exclusively by our ARISS volunteers---something we have never done before. Prior to this submittal, all safety packages---from Owen Garriott's in the early 1980s to today--were developed with contractors from NASA, ESA or Energia. And might I say at substantial expense. I am pleased that the ARISS team did it ourselves! Why is this important? Two reasons: 1) This is a very major IORS milestone. We cannot get to orbit without successfully completing the safety review process and getting our hardware certified for flight. 2) Developing the safety package exclusively with volunteers is an innovative and gutsy approach to keep costs down and get the hardware flown sooner. Otherwise we probably would have to slip launch 1-2 years while we acquired additional funding to get this done. NASA Human Spaceflight Safety Certification is a four-step process--- Phase 0, Phase 1, Phase 2 and Phase 3. The material we submitted covers the first three of the four phases. As part of Phases 0, 1 and 2, we need to make sure NASA understands our design. And we need to show NASA that we understand all the potential hazards that our hardware systems could introduce to ISS and how we have mitigated (or prevented) these hazards. One example is to demonstrate to NASA that our IORS was designed with electrical wiring and circuit breakers that possess adequate features and sufficient margin to prevent an electrical shock or fire on-board the ISS. Critically important stuff! The final phase (Phase 3) will be complete when we have completed all testing and NASA inspection of our flight hardware and NASA deems it flight worthy. At that point the IORS will be flight certificated and we can fly! Currently we are looking to March-May 2018 for flight readiness. For those not following ARISS hardware development very closely, we are developing the IORS to replace most of the on-board radio hardware. It is called "interoperable" because it is being designed to be operated anywhere on ISS. But specifically, it will be used in the two areas with ISS Ham legacy antennas: the Columbus Module and the Russian Service Module. Interoperability allows us to leverage existing ISS power cables, it can be moved between modules in the event of on-orbit failures, and it supports common training and operations. The IORS is the most complex in-cabin hardware system we have ever designed, built, tested and flown as a volunteer team. We will remove the 3 watt Ericsson handheld radio system, initially certified for flight in 1999, and the Packet module--both of which have recently had issues-and install a brand-new, specially modified 25 watt JVC Kenwood D710GA radio to enable a multitude of new or improved capabilities on ISS, including voice repeater and be tter APRS operations. A key development is the Multi-Voltage Power Supply (MVPS), which interfaces with multiple electric outlet connection types on ISS and provides a multitude of power output capabilities for our current and future ARISS operations and amateur radio experimentation. It will also allow our Ham Video system to have a dedicated power outlet, eliminating the outlet sharing we have now, which shuts down Ham Video at times. This effort would not be possible without the dedication and persistence of our IORS development team of volunteers. They have been working tirelessly behind the scenes to provide an outstanding amateur radio experience for all. Our IORS development team includes: Lou McFadin, W5DID, our Chief Engineer; Kerry Banke, N6IZW, the MVPS lead designer; Bob Davis, KF4KSS, the MVPS Mechanical enclosure designer; Ed Krome, K9EK, supporting IORS thermal control and cabin noise dissipation; Dave Taylor, W8AAS, our JVC Kenwood D- 710 development liaison; Bob Bruninga, WB4APR, our APRS and D-710 operations expert; Shin Aota, JL1IBD, and Phil Parton, N4DRO for all their phenomenal support from JVC Kenwood; Kenneth Ransom, N5VHO, our operations lead; and our safety package team-Ken Ernandes, N2WWD, and Gordon Scannell, KD8COJ. We left Bochum at 7:15 am and at 8:00 we were home again. It was a long and interesting day, revealing that it was a blast of activities. In addition to the usual administrative issues, the central theme of the annual meeting was the developments of and around the future Es'hail- 2 satel- lite. The expectation is now that the satellite will be launched in Q2 2018. There were lectures on the construction of the various ground stations and their current status. It was nice to see that in the command, ground stations built in extensive switching options, which also included space for experiments. Also the well-known LEILA is built in custom form and there will be a websdr available to monitor the downlink signal. There was special attention to the digital television capabilities of this satellite. In this context I found the reading of Thomas, DG5NGI, interest- ing, in which he told me about the DVB-S2 mode that one wants to use. And even talked about DVB-S2X as a possible next step afterwards. I had not heard of DVB-S2 before, but now I understand that DVB-S2 is more packet oriented than DVB-S, so there are more opportunities in the data stream build-up. Spoken was about FEC, Modulation, BBFRAMES, Dynamic Coding and Transport Capability. It was also clear that for experimenting with datv on the wideband trans- ponder, coordination between users is needed. The BATC is developing a website that provides more information in this performance. There was also a dummy S/X band P4A transponder at the meeting. Jack had taken his DVB-S S-band television transmitter and X-band receiver. And I'm my ssb/cw S/X band equipment. With this we thoroughly tested the dummy transponder. I even made my first qso about this phase4a style S/X band dummy transponder with Achim DH2VA, which was on the other side of the room. We have therefore exchanged 59 +++ reports. And we were again a nice experience richer. This week Michelle discusses our simplified pi/2 BPSK decoder, working under the assumption that symbol timing and phase have already been resolved to a single sample per symbol. This work fits into the much larger picture of acquiring phase, timing of symbols, demodulation, decoding, and correlation to the fixed patterns of the Start of Frame field in the physical layer header that helps define each DVB-S2 frame. The DVB-S2 physical layer header is sent using a modulation scheme called pi/2 BPSK. This scheme is defined in the standard. Since we're using GNU Radio as our reference design, we decided to make a custom block in GNU Radio to do this. This block will evolve to include our specific type of correlation for the Start of Frame as well. We started with the definition in the specification where, "SOF shall correspond to the sequence 18D2E82HEX (01-1000-....-0010 in binary notation, the left-side bit being the MSB of the PLHEADER)" 90 degree BPSK, so in complex notation, it's…"The PLHEADER, represented by the binary sequence (y1, y2,...y90) shall be modulated into 90 p/2BPSK symbols according to the rule: I sub 2i-1 = Q sub 2i-1 = (1/v2) (1-2y sub 2i-1), I sub 2i = - Q sub 2i = - (1/v2) (1-2y sub 2i) for i = 1, 2, ..., 45 " [Ed. note: examples and explanation are in the video] Assuming that the demodulation is correct, the next step from here is to take our start of frame and look for received patterns that match it. When this happens, we will produce a tag. Tags in GNU Radio are synchronized chunks of information that are attached to samples. It is like metadata that can be used by other blocks. For this block, we are going to follow the conventions in the general correlation estimation block. This means that there will be several tags that can be used by downstream blocks that need them. Those downstream blocks have already implemented functions that consume the tags, so if we produce them, it makes for more useful flow graphs.? Source of AO-85/Fox-1 elements?

What is the source of the AO-85/FOX-1 orbital elements I see through the usual channels? Kelso's Celestrak isn't carrying them. When I inquired, I learned that it's US policy not to release elements for any object associated with an NRO launch -- and AO-85 was launched with USA 264, 2015-058A, #40964. Kelso already asked for an exception but was denied. But NRO isn't doing a very good job of hiding our satellite, as current elements are readily available on the (German) Heavens-Above site: 1 40967U 15058D 17278.51421614 .00000880 00000-0 11831-3 0 01124 2 40967 064.7745 244.1947 0178987 037.6014 323.7456 14.75520632016072 Even the *primary* (spook) payload USA264 also has current elements there: 1 40964U 15058A 17278.82038009 0.00000000 00000-0 00000-0 0 00 2 40964 63.4416 239.2742 0066660 175.8104 184.1896 13.40733320 01 though these probably came from the dedicated worldwide team of volunteer SEESAT observers that for decades has provided the dual public service of producing their own element sets for US spy satellites and making fools of the US spooks in the process. And a close comparison will show that USA264 and AO-85 aren't even in the same orbit, which makes the non-publication policy even sillier than it first appeared. FalconSat-3: UZ7HO's Soundmodem Full Duplex Mode?

All: Regarding Falconsat-3: I have two 9600 baud rigs connected to 2 separate sound cards. Each sound card is connected to a separate instances of UZ7HO's Soundmodem so each rig has it's own independent modem. This setup works perfectly in the shack, but I quickly found out that I can't get each instances of Soundmodem to talk to the terminal program at the same time. I tried using one instance of Soundmodem with one sound card on the output and the other for the input, but the input card mutes when you transmit on the output so it doesn't appear to work in full-duplex mode. Maybe I'm missing something? Any way to work around this? Tony -K2MO

Just listened to a long pass of a downlink on 145.840 MHz at 9600 baud full scale on my radio. Did not decode a single packet. But it did track Doppler from starting at 145.840+ and ending at 145.335 or so and it went from west, across north to East… At first I thought it might have been someone uplinking to PFS3, but it was solid, never dropped until it faded to the east. FS: Yaesu FT100D-$300

I have for sale a Yaesu FT100D HF/6m/2m/70cm all mode mobile sized radio. This is the model that does 100 watts on HF and 6m, 50 watts on 2m, and 20 watts on 70cm. It has the 500hz CW filter and TCXO as standard, as well as tone encode and decode. It also has a built in CW memory keyer, DSP noise reduction, an autonotch, a DSP based Audio Peak Filter that is wonderful for CW, speech processor, a meter that shows power out and SWR at the same time, and quite a few more features. It would make the nice half of a satellite station, using it to transmit on 2m or 70cm. The case is in overall very good condition with 1 ding on the bottom corner. I bought this back in March from Ham Radio Outlet so they checked it all out then also. The rig took a little tumble and it still works fine, but the volume shaft is bent slight, so when you adjust the volume the squelch moves right along with it. You can hold the squelch control with one hand so it stays in place, and move the volume knob with your other hand. It comes with a hand mic, power cord, and original box. This is a great way to get on HF/VHF/UHF at the same time, and the receiver and noise blanker in this rig are very good for the mobile class of rigs. 9600 Capable Dual-Band Radio?

Greetings! With the arrival of FalconSat-3's 9k6 packet capability, I've been looking at radio options. Perhaps others have, too. While the Kenwood HT option is great, I would prefer to use my computer. So, if I understand correctly I need a radio with a data port that is capable of handling 9600 data. And, while FalconSat-3 needs me to transmit on 2m, I'm only considering dual-band radios in anticipation of wanting to transmit 9600 data on 70cm in the future. The Yaesu FT-7900R is one of the lowest cost dual-band radios that I've seen (new) that has a data port that the manual indicates can handle both 1200 & 9600 packets. By chance has anyone used this radio for 9600 data at any point? Or if you don't have first-hand experience w/ the FT-7900R, am I correct that it's a radio that I can transmit a 9600 data stream through from my computer? Thanks! -Scott, K4KDR Montpelier, VA USA

Weekend Rove - Full Schedule

Hi All, Following is the full schedule for this weekend. Pretty ambitious, so don't be too upset if I have miscalculated travel times and show up late. Precision is not one of my specialties! Some passes start minutes after the previously listed pass. I find I usually run through everyone in the first few minutes, so if an equally favourable (or better) pass happens soon after then I'll move on to the next one. Note that I added FN65 early Sunday morning. I received a request for FN68, which is about the same distance out of my way. However, FN65 is an easy drive down the Trans Canada Highway, where FN68 is a drive across new Brunswick (moose country) on a secondary road. In addition, that part of the province is mountainous and I could spend hours just trying to find a place to set up. I went for FN65. I'm tired. I hope I got my dates and times right. The June 2004 QST cover photo shows a few of us holding a piece of rabbit fence bent into a parabola about 2' wide by 1' high with the HT held at the focal point. It makes a great gain antenna and is trivial to build. The HT's rubber duck is at the focal point so there is no coax. Greg, You are going to have a very hard time copying Falconsat with omni/whip antenna's. Yes, it's a strong downlink, but "strong" for amateur satellites is misleading... It's nowhere near as strong as the ISS voice radio, for example, which is easily picked up on my scanner duckie. It's supposed to be over one watt, but I can pick up AO-85 with a stronger signal, if that gives you any idea. Also, Falconsat has some really serious polarity fade, so there's another issue. I can go from roughly S7 to 'nuttin by rotating my arrow 10°. --Roy K3RLD > Ok, so I must be doing something wrong. Alternative to M2 LEO Pack

Greetings, After an 18 month hiatus, I got the bug to put the satellite station back up. I have all the equipment in house (g5500 rotor, antennas, radio, interface, and cables) and can have this up and running in an afternoon - possibly this weekend. Now as most of you are probably aware, the LEO pack contains a 4x4 on VHF and an 8x8 on UHF. What if I wanted a bit more, meaning what might be the next step up in terms of a VHF and UHF circular polarized yagi? I'm also working with a 3ele 6m yagi under the elevation rotor, but I'm not opposed to pulling that down to make room for center-mounted booms. I'm asking because, while I'm leaning back towards satellites, I'd like to retain at least some ability to work terrestrial. The 4x4 CP on 2m ssb certainly seems like a step down from what I'm working with now (7x7 xPol yagi) - I'm not looking for parity, just a slight improvement over a 4x4. FalconSat 3 iGate using rPi and pymultimonaprs?

I am running a terrestrial APRS iGate from my house using a Comet GP-15 tri-band vertical. RF is fed into an RTL-SDR, connected to my raspberry pi. I am currently using pymultimonaprs to make this all happen, and in Marco Kubon's tutorial (http://www.kubonweb.de/?tag=rtl-sdr) he says it's possible to catch the ISS APRS frames by changing the RTL section of the config file. Does anyone know if I can add in a 3rd frequency to capture FalconSat3 packets? Roving Again This Weekend

Well, the "VE3HLS All-Hit Request Line" has been overloaded lately, so it's time to get out and do something a little bigger! *The Plan* ...is to fill in some gaps in some of your grid maps. Thus, I will be leaving Friday morning for Quebec. Night 1 will be spent in Joliette, QC, where I hope to activate FN35/36 late Friday afternoon and early Friday evening. Saturday morning, I will head further east and hope to activate FN56/57 beginning around 1430 UTC. I'll stay there for a few hours, then move on to activate FN57/67 beginning around 2130 - 2200. FN57/67 is my last stop of the day, so I can afford to stay there a little longer. Sunday and Monday are reserved for driving back home. However, I'll be making two brief stops to fulfill some requests, namely FN47 and FN45. I'll try my best to do at least one of these activations on the boundary with FN46 to provide "added value"! I'll likely spend Sunday night in FN24. If anybody needs it then let me know. Otherwise I'll just crash in front of the TV! Potentially 10 grids, if everything goes according to plan. *The Weather** * As of earlier today the weather forecast for the entire destination area sucks. The forecast for Saint Leonard, NB currently says 30% chance of showers on Saturday and worsening on Sunday. I'll go anyway, provided the forecast doesn't get any worse. Standing out in pouring rain and letting my gear get soaked is another matter; I won't do it. I'd rather it snowed. Rain may also slow my travel progress and make me late. *Other Caveats* Traffic could also be a problem. It was miserable on Labour Day weekend. This weekend is Canadian Thanksgiving and the highways tend to be busy and slow. Put all this together and it makes it a little tougher to come up with a precise schedule. What I'm going to do is put together a schedule that includes passes that happen up to an hour or so either side of my planned arrival times. It doesn't mean I'll make every pass, so watch Twitter for updates. And if all my plans go down the toilet then I'll do some landscape photography, another passion of mine! 73, Ken VE3HLS **

Special ARISS News Release no. 17-01 Date: Oct. 2, 2017 For Immediate Release ARISS One Step Closer to Flying New Equipment to ISS On behalf of the ARISS International team, I am proud to announce that on Friday September 29th the ARISS team submitted the InterOperable Radio System (IORS) Safety Data Package to NASA for review! Our next step in this process is the Safety Review, which is planned for November 2. Submitting this was a phenomenal accomplishment!! Particularly since the entire Safety Data Package was developed exclusively by our ARISS volunteers---something we have never done before. Prior to this submittal, all safety packages---from Owen Garriott's in the early 1980s to today--were developed with contractors from NASA, ESA or Energia. And might I say at substantial expense. I am pleased that the ARISS team did it ourselves! Why is this important? Two reasons: 1) This is a very major IORS milestone. We cannot get to orbit without successfully completing the safety review process and getting our hardware certified for flight. 2) Developing the safety package exclusively with volunteers is an innovative and gutsy approach to keep costs down and get the hardware flown sooner. Otherwise we probably would have to slip launch 1-2 years while we acquired additional funding to get this done. NASA Human Spaceflight Safety Certification is a four-step process---Phase 0, Phase 1, Phase 2 and Phase 3. The material we submitted covers the first three of the four phases. As part of Phases 0, 1 and 2, we need to make sure NASA understands our design. And we need to show NASA that we understand all the potential hazards that our hardware systems could introduce to ISS and how we have mitigated (or prevented) these hazards. One example is to demonstrate to NASA that our IORS was designed with electrical wiring and circuit breakers that possess adequate features and sufficient margin to prevent an electrical shock or fire on-board the ISS. Critically important stuff! The final phase (Phase 3) will be complete when we have completed all testing and NASA inspection of our flight hardware and NASA deems it flight worthy. At that point the IORS will be flight certificated and we can fly! Currently we are looking to March-May 2018 for flight readiness. For those not following ARISS hardware development very closely, we are developing the IORS to replace most of the on-board radio hardware. It is called "interoperable" because it is being designed to be operated anywhere on ISS. But specifically, it will be used in the two areas with ISS Ham legacy antennas: the Columbus Module and the Russian Service Module. Interoperability allows us to leverage existing ISS power cables, it can be moved between modules in the event of on-orbit failures, and it supports common training and operations. The IORS is the most complex in-cabin hardware system we have ever designed, built, tested and flown as a volunteer team. We will remove the 3 watt Ericsson handheld radio system, initially certified for flight in 1999, and the Packet module--both of which have recently had issues-and install a brand-new, specially modified 25 watt JVC Kenwood D710GA radio to enable a multitude of new or improved capabilities on ISS, including voice repeater and better APRS operations. A key development is the Multi-Voltage Power Supply (MVPS), which interfaces with multiple electric outlet connection types on ISS and provides a multitude of power output capabilities for our current and future ARISS operations and amateur radio experimentation. It will also allow our Ham Video system to have a dedicated power outlet, eliminating the outlet sharing we have now, which shuts down Ham Video at times. This effort would not be possible without the dedication and persistence of our IORS development team of volunteers. They have been working tirelessly behind the scenes to provide an outstanding amateur radio experience for all. Falconsat-3 and APRS HT's?

I was confused. I thought FALCONSAT-3 was a PACSAT protocol store and forward system because I thought I saw people trying to get the old PB and BG code, But the AMSAT web page says it is 9600 baud GMSK up and down. https://www.amsat.org/falconsat-3/ 435.103 MHz down and 145.840 up DIGI call of PFS3-1. While of course setting 5 memores to chase the Doppler the full 20 KHz during the pass. So I am surrprised that I havent heard of anyone making contacts with any ole' APRS HT or Mobile... All of these radios can do 9600 baud and APRS natively.. Im under Kitchen arrest until 1st grandkid arrives soon and cannot play. If I missed something, ignore me. TUning the antennas on a Cubesat

Someone asked me how to tune the antennas on a cubesat without the instrumentation totally becoming part of the antenna system itself? I said you have to put the SWR instrument inside the cubesat as we did here: http://aprs.org/PSAT2/SWR-testing-0160x.jpg But that only works on a 1.5U cubesat where and MFJ Antenna Analyzer will fit! The other method is to just put in a bidirectional coupler chip, and then feed the forward and reflected voltage taps to the internal cubesat telemetry system and then compute the SWR from these two Forward and Reflected power telemetry channels. Hello I see lots of dumped packets due to the APRS-IS being used to relay satgate packets Is there someone that has the infrastructure that can run a space only backbone server stream that we can feed packets into that don’t get dropped as dupes ? That way we can gauge the amount of space traffic ? I can try and set one up here on test For ISS, NO-84 and any other satellites ? Andrew

Patrick, I tried the 2115UT pass. No soap, but I Did see to undecoded packets (??PFS3-1).Also I did notice a lot of noise on the TX band, which would drop out and then back in. I noticed after the pass the DOH! Moment. I thought I had changed the packet path to Others, but apparently did not hit * to activate it.. For just the HT, pictures of the HT's screen showing the messages exchanged with other stations and other information like position packets. I have posted files in my Dropbox space at http://dropbox.wd9ewk.net/ (look for folders with "FalconSat3" in the folder names). I just tried the 4th setup listed above for the first time on the 1756 UTC pass this morning. As I've seen before, I am receiving more data with the SDR setup than with the HTs. I saw my own packets passing through the digipeater - my position/comment packet, as well as a couple of messages sent to ALL. I haven't tried using the software directly to a radio, but I have a SignaLink USB here, and may work on that. The SDRplay, along with HDSDR's AFC function, works very well on the downlink. I normally don't have to make any adjustments to the downlink frequency during passes, as long as I am reasonably accurate in pointing my antenna skyward. UISS makes it easier to keep track of call signs, rather than just looking at the HS-SoundModem window - especially when a burst of packets show up on the screen, and I might miss something as it scrolls off the window. I have two more really nice passes this afternoon - 1935 and 2115 UTC. I am going to use the same setup on those two passes, and hope to see other stations using the digipeater like me. Maybe I will add to my short list of FalconSat-3 QSOs (currently at 3)... 73! Conventions for apogee and perigee altitudes?

I've been returning to satellite tracking software after a while (I wrote some early AMSAT tools in the early 1980s) and am wondering if there has ever been a resolution of the exact definitions of "apogee height" and "perigee height". The simple geometric definitions of "perigee" and "apogee" are the points where the spacecraft is the closest to or farthest from the center of the earth. This is easy if you assume the earth is a perfect sphere; all you need is the semimajor axis a and the eccentricity e: apogee = a * (1+e) - earth_radius perigee = a * (1-e) - earth_radius But reality is more complicated than that. For a nonequatorial orbit the apogee and perigee usually occur over some point off the equator where the earth's radius is smaller than at the equator. You can correct for this given the inclination and the argument of perigee, which together tell you the latitude at which apogee and perigee occur; one will occur in the northern hemisphere and the other will occur in the southern hemisphere at the opposite latitude. There's a complication here in that this is geocentric latitude, while we more often use geodetic latitude on a daily basis. Converting geodetic latitude to geocentric is fairly easy, but converting in the other direction is like Kepler's equation: apparently there's no closed form solution so you have to iterate. But this is a relatively minor detail. The real problem comes when you have a satellite with a relatively high inclination and an argument of perigee close to 0 or 180 degrees; in this situation the satellite can easily be farther from the earth's surface than *either* the calculated apogee or perigee! The ISS is a case in point at the moment. Using element set 906, which has an argument of perigee of about 329 degrees I calculate an apogee of 408 km and a perigee of 402.4 km assuming an oblate earth and ignoring the distinction between geodetic and geocentric latitude (which is relatively small for this argument of perigee). But near the southernmost point of its orbit, I calculate an altitude of about 421 km, well above both the perigee and apogee heights because the earth's surface through the poles is more elliptical than the ISS's orbit. So what conventions do people use? How meaningful do people expect these figures to be? For a low altitude orbit like the ISS, the difference in drag between 402 and 421 km is actually quite significant. At the very least it would be nice if everybody used the same convention.

It was possible to enable digipeating in a PACSAT protocol satellite. I wonder if it should be considered? I know I'd like it... ;-) Live Real-time satellite operations. Skrobot, NASA Cubesat Launch Initiative Program, Kennedy Space Center -------------------------------------------------------------- Garrett was born in Myrtle Beach, S.C., but moved to West Cocoa, Florida at the age of six months. Immediately after graduating from Cocoa High School in 1980, Garrett began a four-year tour of duty in the United States Marine Corp that took him around the world. In 1988 Garrett earned a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering from the University of Tennessee; he later received his master's degree in space systems from the Florida Institute of Technology in 1992. Garrett joined the NASA team at Kennedy Space Center in 2000 as an Integration Engineer for the Launch Services Program. Prior to his work with NASA, Garrett was employed by General Dynamics as a System Engineer for the Atlas/Centaur booster program. Dur- ing his tenure with General Dynamics, Garret participated in more than 50 launches while working in the Electrical, Ground Instru- mentation, Payload Mission Integration, Telemetry and Project Management divisions. Each year, ARISS provides tens of thousands of students with oppor- tunities to learn about space technologies and space communications through the exploration of Amateur Radio. The program provides learning opportunities by connecting students to astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS) through a partnership between NASA, the American Radio Relay League, the Radio Amateur Satellite Corporation and other Amateur Radio organizations and worldwide space agencies. The program’s goal is to inspire students worldwide, to pursue interests and careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) through Amateur Radio. Educators overwhelmingly report that student participation in the ARISS program inspires an interest in STEM subjects and in STEM careers. Gowen, G3IOR, Silent Key Pat Gowen, G3IOR, of Norwich, Norfolk, passed away on August 17, after a long illness. He was 85. The amateur-satellite world has lost one of its true pioneers. Pat was a co-founder of AMSAT-UK, and was elected to the board of directors of AMSAT-NA in 1974. He was also the longtime satellite columnist of Practical Wireless, as well as a frequent contributor to The AMSAT Journal and Oscar News. He was the first to work 100 DXCC entities via satellite (all LEOs), and received Satellite DXCC No. 4 when his QSL cards arrived. Fluent in Russian, Pat enjoyed conversing with the cosmonauts aboard MIR and ISS. He and I made the first transatlantic QSO between two handheld transceivers, in 1991. More recently, Pat was the first to discover the “re-birth” of AMSAT- OSCAR 7 when its battery returned to life in sunlight. In addition to his work with AMSAT and satellites, Pat was a prominent HF operator and DXer. He had confirmed QSOs with all DXCC entities and had also been a member of the First Class CW Operators Club (FOC), as well as a leading member of the Norfolk Amateur Radio Club. Literally hundreds of new amateurs obtained their licenses as a result of Pat’s NARC training classes. Martin Sweeting, G3YJO, Chairman of AMSAT-UK and founder of Surrey Satellite Technology, Ltd. (SSTL) remembered Pat this way, "If my memory serves me well, I first met Pat G3IOR sometime in the mid- 1970’s when I became interested in space and naturally amateur radio satellites - starting with OSCAR-6. In 1975, Pat was a founding member and sometime Chairman of AMSAT-UK along with other stalwarts such as Roy Stevens G2BVN, Arthur Gee G2UK and Richard Limebear G3RWL and had a strong interest in not only the OSCAR series but also especially the RS satellites from the then Soviet Union. Starting in late 1973, Pat produced the first editions of OSCAR News as a typed newsletter providing essential orbit tracking information for the new OSCAR-6 satellite (at a time before easy access via the internet!) and contributed more timely updates and observations via the AMSAT-UK 80- metre net each Sunday morning - along with a news round-up each month transmitted by G3RWL. Pat attended and contributed to the early AMST- UK Colloquia at Surrey. In June 21, 2002 Pat surprised the AMSAT community by detecting CW signals from the long-believed defunct OSCAR-7 satellite whose batteries had failed in 1981 but came back to life after the batteries eventually went open circuit enabling operations in sunlight to this day! Pat was passionate about amateur radio, amateur satellites and the environment; he contributed much over his long life to each of these and will be sadly missed. " Professionally, Pat was a biochemist, retired from the University of East Anglia. He had also served as a magistrate in the Norfolk courts, the youngest in England at the time. No mention of Pat would be complete without noting his decades of work in cleaning up the beaches and waters of his beloved Norfolk. He leaves his wife Norma, a noted landscape artist. Remote operation enables performance improvements (one can put the radio closer to the antenna and put the antenna in the best possible location), allows more comfortable and flexible operating positions (operate from your iPad by the pool), and dramatically increases potential coverage area (remote stations can be located where they provide more public service). Remote operations are a great way to learn about radio, network- ing, reliability, and protocols. They are a big educational win. The problem is easily defined and arguably the performance can be easily measured, but there is plenty more to be done to improve the current state of the art in remote operations. We want to define what we're doing for remote operations that doesn't reinvent the wheel or hold us back. Linux has several time-tested tools and applications. There are some proprietary solutions. There's a lot of DIY remote opera- tions. A lot of you have experience setting up remote operations. Here's where we want to start. + What works? What is solvable? Our Kletskous CubeSat is scheduled to fly on BACAR High Altitude Balloon flight on the 21 October 2017." The AMSAT SA Kletskous team is putting the final touches on the CubeSat to be tested on the BACAR flight this October. The team is integrating the electrical power system (EPS), the stabilizer board, the on-board computer system, the transponder and antennas into the new space frame. No solar panels will be flown on balloon flight configuration. Kletskous will only be powered by its batteries. BACAR is scheduled to be launched at 9am from an airfield near Secunda, South Africa which is south east of Johannesburg. Kletskous is one of many payloads to be flown. The transponder frequencies are as follows: Uplink: 435,135 - 435,165 MHz Downlink: 145,850 – 145,880 MHz Kletskous is a crowd funded project. [ANS thanks AMSAT SA for the above information] Australis Oscar 5 recalled at a book launch (From the WIA-The Wireless Institute of Australia with additional audio and interviews at https://vimeo.com/191605076) Australia’s first ‘home grown’ satellite was built in 1966, then sent to the USA for launch, but unfortunately this did not take place until January 1970 on a Delta rocket from the Vandenberg Air Force Base. Australis Oscar 5, or AO-5, was the product of a keen group of enthusiasts from Melbourne University, together with a number of local radio amateurs, and the WIA providing some assistance, finance, and guidance. The late Bill Rice VK3ABP, who was the Victorian tracking co-ordinator and long-time Amateur Radio magazine editor, recalls those days in an audio played on the VK1WIA broadcast. In it he told of how the satellite reached the USA ready for launch, but had to wait until 1970 after AMSAT the Radio Amateur Satellite Corporation was formed, taking over from the then defunct OSCAR Association. The satellite did not have a translator, noted Bill VK3ABP, but its telemetry was the most advanced for an amateur satellite of the time. It could be turned on and off by ground stations, and this was mostly done by Les Jenkins VK3ZBJ. A book on those times was launched recently, before a number of guests including the WIA, in the building where the Melbourne University Astronautical Society met to discuss the possibility of a satellite and building it. In introducing the author was Richard Tonkin, who built the satellite along with a very talented radio amateur Les Jenkins VK3ZBJ (sk). Mr Tonkin noted that a professor told a student to “stop this silly satellite stuff”. The team which realized no-one had built a satellite in Australia, just got on with it. Book author Dr Owen Mace talked about how fitting the room was for the launch because it had been used by the satellite team. At the time, sophisticated electronic measurements were necessary on the satellites stabilization system, and access to a laboratory at the university helpful. WIA Historian Peter Wolfenden VK3RV says many radio amateurs were involved, a few on the design side, others associated with command and many with tracking it during its six week life. These included Les Jenkins VK3ZBJ, Michael Owen VK3KI, David Rankin VK3QV, Ray Naughton VK3ATN, and Bill Rice VK3ABP - all silent keys. There were also many local Australian, Japanese, New Zealander and Malaysian coordinators, and some recordings were taken of the AO-5 telemetry. A fuller story is being prepared for publication in the WIA journal Amateur Radio magazine. Meantime, University of Melbourne students are now well advanced to build a nano-satellite, with the Wireless Institute of Australia (WIA) assisting in the IARU frequency and other coordination processes. Through the Melbourne Space Program affiliated with the University of Melbourne, the nano-satellite is due to be handed over in November and launched in early 2018. Also there has been a strong link on space matters with National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), but now it has been formally announced Australia will have its own space agency. An event which mostly went unnoticed was in Adelaide last Wednesday it was a presentation called " How we built Australia's first satellite" again by Richard Tonkin and Dr Owen Mace. Those who were lucky enough to have been notified heard how two young University students in the 1950's, fascinated with space, built Australia's first satellite. Road trip Texas => Utah

On Monday, 18 September, I'll be starting a leisurely road trip to Utah. Monday night will be spent in DM73 in NM and Tuesday night in DM57 in CO. Destination is DN41. I will operate the sats from those three grids. I also hope to work from other grids en route, depending on available passes. Possible grids are DM74, DM75, DM65, DM66, DM58, DM48, DM49 and DN40. None are extremely rare, but newer grid chasers may need some or all. While in Utah, I'll try to activate some grids surrounding DN41. NON-AX25 response from Falconsat-3

Good afternoon! I tried a Falconsat-3 pass today using a FT-817nd, a Signalink interface and my laptop running HDSDR, UISS and HS Soundmodem. The 817 is set to work as my transmitter and a SDRPlay RSP1 as receiver. I was able to decode several packets from the satellite, including some from WD9EWK. When I tried sending location or messages using "CQ to PFS3-1" never saw my packets digipeated, only a: <NON-AX25 frame Len=24> Anybody knows what I could be doing wrong? Thanks Fernando, NP4JV

APRS Links to Puerto Rico via ISS

The chances are slim that someone in Puerto Rico has an APRS HT, but the potential exists for such an APRS user to be able to get APRS messages out during at least 4 passes a day over the Caribbean. http://aprs.org/AMSAT/puerto-rico-satgates1.png The quick sketch above shows that SATgates in most of the southeast can get a few minutes of access times. Another circle shows that Florida Satgates can get maybe 4 passes a day of connectivity. So if you have a good satgate, make sure it is up and antennas pointing southeast if needed. Yaesu FT-736r for sale

Our radio club is selling a Yaesu FT-736r with hand mic, and DC power cable that we received from a donor this year. The rig is equipped with four modules: 2 meters, 220 MHz, 440 MHz, and 1.2 GHz. The rig also has installed the FTS-8 tone board and FVS-1 voice synthesizer. Our club's main satellite operator has tested all these and found them to be working. The donor was fastidious and packed the rig back in its original box with the manual when he retired it from use. We are asking $1100 for sale in the US only. Please contact me for details or photos. Looking to move my two mast mounted preamps into an enclosure. Who knows of a good mast mounted waterproof enclosure that will handle 2 Advanced Recv'r 160 Watt Mast Mounted Amateur Preamp's inside? The preamps are 5" wide and 2-1/2 deep. I could stack them on top of each other or side by side. Let me know if the suggested enclosure will have the hardware to mount to the mast. EM94 & SC Friday evening SO-50 & FO-29

Barring the unforeseen, I plan on riding down to Rock Hill SC Friday evening with KM4VDM and fulfilling a request from a friend to operate from EM94. I will also be in South Carolina for those that may need it for their Satellite WAS. This will be two passes only, one on each sat. SO-50 at 0209z (Sat UTC time) and then about twenty minutes after that pass, FO-20 at 0245z (Sat UTC time) Most likely will be in the lower half of the RX passband (145.970 uplink) unless there is QRM or other issues. I should have access to twitter during the trip, so updates as we go and then lotW upload after returning home a few hours later, paper QSL by request. 73, Kevin N4UFO

Hi Everyone, Newbie on this list, but I may have been here 20 years ago :-). Back in the last millennium I was an Oscar 16 geek and was very active on it. Since it's gone, I have not seen another Sat with similar operating parameters, until FalconSAT-3 came along. Naturally, my old PSK-1T tnc and radios are no good, not to mention my DOS box with PB and PG on it. So, my question is.......what are people using to operate on Falcon SAT-3? I have a WIN7 box, a Timewave Navigator, SignaLink USB, FT-817 and TM-D710 radios. Is any of this useful to get going with? UISS and FalconSAT-3

FalconSAT-3 is working very well with HTs which are full duplex, or part of a full duplex configuration. AGW, Soundmodem, etc which feed UISS are full duplex, but it is not clear whether UISS is. Guy, ON6MU wasn't sure and thought that two incidences of the program might be needed. Has anybody successfully used UISS with FalconSAT-3? 73s, Alan WA4SCA

I literally gasped out loud when I read this news... shocking to hear. My best memory of Nick is working him from the Nevada desert on AO-7. I stayed late for the pass to work him. It was a struggle for him to hear me, but later when I found out why, I was so impressed. I had no idea he was using an Arrow INDOORS! Also, I remember some nice e-mails, one where he congratulated me on an award... Nick was a kind and gracious soul. He will be missed. He always went beyond the grid curious about the town I lived in on Long Island, and spoke with enthusiasm about attending Babylon High School and his enjoyment of the Beaches. SAT Ops, "RADIO VICTOR TANGO" What sad and shocking news! The SAT Community has lost a really great guy. Nick was an excellent operator and friendly and helpful to everyone he encountered. When he was even living in a townhouse, it was amazing the many QSOs and Grids he worked by using an inside antenna! A couple years ago while Roving in VE2 and Northern New England, I ended up staying in Burlington, VT, overnight. Nick tracked me down via e-mail and we had a nice eyeball QSO over coffee/bagels (he bought). He had many amazing stories about his Satellite experiences and good words to say about everyone. Whoever is chasing WAS-SAT probably has Nick's QSL/LoTW in their file for Vermont. Whenever I would be roving up north and the footprint fell out of most of the U.S., Nick would often drop in for quick chat to keep me company when no one else was calling. Nick.... We'll ALL miss you dearly. Rest in Peace, my friend. Nick KB1RVT has been around since I started working satellites in 2006 and as K8BL mentioned, he has worked everything with "portable equipment." He has likely worked more European Grids on LEO satellites than anyone else in North America! He was the voice of Fox November Three Four. We will miss hearing him on the birds. May he rest in peace. Jeff, I don't have 9600 baud TX, but I have used the MixW virtual TNC to copy the BBS and digi with WiSP and a VU5K. Looks just like 25 years ago when I was using a hardware TNC. Should work witi the any rig if you have the right soundcard interfacing. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Colegio Nueva Concepcion, San Miguel de Tucuman, Argentina on 28 Sept. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 17:51 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between NA1SS and LU1KCQ. The contact should be audible over portions of Argentina and adjacent areas. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. Colegio Nueva Concepcion is located in the heart of the city of San Miguel de Tucuman in northern Argentina. This is a coed, secular school with a 981-student population from Pre-K at age 3. Today, high school has 290 students with a curriculum oriented towards social science and an intensive English program (10 weekly classes per week). To graduate from high school, students at Colegio Nueva Concepcion write a thesis paper on issues which they are personally interested in and usually in the field of humanist studies. However, there has been a tendency for some teenagers to do research in the hard sciences possibly because of the work done in other areas, such as the Astrophysics Workshop. Unlike most schools in the province, Colegio Nueva Concepcion offers an elective workshop on Astrophysics, whose activities have motivated the class to contact you through the ISS experience. The Astrophysics Workshop has been added to complement the humanist orientation of the curricular program. Students attending the workshop are sixteen to seventeen-year olds in the fifth and sixth year (juniors and seniors), and we firmly believe that the ISS contact will motivate them as well as younger students to become more interested in exact sciences, and more specifically the sciences of space. In the meantime, we are getting ready for the communication experience by discussing the possible questions with the workshop teacher, and carrying out comprehension activities in the English classes to be ready to listen and understand about space, space race, and life in the ISS. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. What research activities you are developing in space do you consider more relevant for the future of humanity? 2. What kind of investigations you do in space can only be done only there and not on the Earth? 3. Have you seen anything weird or unusual in space that science hasn't been able explain yet? 4. Considering you know both earth's gravity and space's microgravity, which one do you prefer? 5. After living so many months in space, have you developed any different perspective on the life and problems of the world on the Earth's surface? 6. Are there any Argentinean or Latin American people working in your team? 7. What was the most complicated situation you had to go through in the ISS and how did you solve it? 8. How do you think you will feel when you return to earth after a long time? 9. Does everyone have the same role in ISS, or are there superiors and subordinates? 10. Which is more important for traveling and staying in space, physical condition or mental state? 11. How long have you stayed in the ISS and how long did you prepare for that? 12. Is it possible to reproduce living organisms in space? What about human reproduction? 13. If you go out of the ISS, why do you do it for? 14. What are the protocols in the event that one of the astronauts becomes lightly or severely ill? 15. How do you spend your free time? - if you have any. 16. Can you communicate with your relatives frequently? How do you do it? 17. Would you like to go back to space or is it an experience that you would not like to repeat? 18. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Heart of America Council Boy Scouts of America, Kansas City, MO on 23 Sept. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 12:03 UTC. It is recommended that you start listening approximately 10 minutes before this time.The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be a telebridge between NA1SS and W6SRJ. The contact should be audible over the west coast of the U.S. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. The Scouting 500 is a Council wide event of the Heart of America Council, Boy Scouts of America. The Council serves 29,830 youth and 14,255 adult leaders in the 17 bordering Missouri and Kansas counties which constitute the Greater Kansas City Metropolitan area. We expect 12,000 to 14,000 boys and their adult leaders and parents. The Scouting 500 is taking place on the grounds of the NASCAR Kansas Speedway. In the infield of the track we will have 114 different activities for the attendees. That of course includes a demonstration NASCAR Stock Car race with 5 regular NASCAR cars and their drivers. More on the Scouting line we have a large artificial trout pool where the boys can tie their own flies and practice casting. Another tank will conduct scuba lessons. There will be custom cars, bb guns, a hot air balloon, go carts, archery, scout skills and of course a substantial STEM area. The highlight of our STEM program is the ARISS contact. The contact will be a part of the STEM-Amateur Radio Exhibit. The exhibit includes educational displays about amateur, a morse code station where the Scouts can practice sending and receiving their name and unit number to one another and other information about the International Space Station. Key to the exhibit are radio stations manned with licensed operators each operating in one of several different modes. We will have VHF\UHF featuring repeater usage, APRS and ECHOLINK. We will have HF stations running CW, SSB, JT65 and remote and other digital modes. Our call sign is K2BSA/0. We look forward to working the ISS. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. What was purpose of the last spacewalk and did you get to go on it? 2. For boosting the space station's orbit, what is typically used if not Zarya? 3. If someone gets hurt or sick who gives them first aid? 4. What have you done for entertainment that is unique to do in space? 5. How do you exercise on the space station and how do your muscles feel in gravity? 6. What is your current experiment and why is it best done in space? 7. Can you make out cities from space at night? 8. What is your favorite meal and how is it prepared? 9. What is the next big thing in space exploration in your opinion? 10. What got you interested in being an astronaut? 11. How difficult is it to get used to gravity once you come back to earth? 12. How long does it take to get to the station from earth? 13. What is the best type of college degree to get to become an astronaut? 14. Is being weightless like swimming under water? It seems you move slowly. 15. Do you find it hard to sleep with so much going on around you all the time? 16.
