Got it going. You must use the drop down box to the right of the "Start" button to select your input source, then click "Start". That box starts out empty rather than showing the first input device in the list and there is no text there to prompt the selection of the input. It now finds and listens fine to sound card audio input and the FCD. You DO NOT need to run the FDC control program, FoxTelem will set the freq, although there doesn't appear to be any feedback to show the FDC got the message. Jim

As I read through the docs on the fox tlm program two things are not clear: If I have a FunCube Dongle hooked to a USB port and antenna, do I need to run any other software besides foxtelem.exe? With the FCD on the USB port and the IQ box checked in foxtelem.exe what should I see on the screen with no signal present? Noise, nothing? How do I know, before the signal is there, if this is working and the FCD is talking to foxtelem? When I run the FCD software it can talk to the FCD dongle, set the freq, etc. When I run foltelem there is no indication anything is talking to anything else. Jim

Help Needed: GNU Radio + FoxTelem

Hello Everyone, I am frantically rushing to get GNU Radio to 'play nice' with foxtelem. I'm running all linux here. I'm hoping someone can maybe throw me a few pointers on getting the fox telem software to work with external SDR applications. I'm attempting to pipe signals from GNU Radio in three ways, all met with failure: First is by running an FM receiver flowgraph and then trying to pipe the audio out via a Linux FIFO using the 'Wav File Sink' block in GR. I point the SDR flowgraph to my pipe, and then I point the FoxTelem software to the same pipe and fire the programs up. I've successfully used this method in the past to feed a sound streaming application that "thinks" is reading from a standard wav file, but is actually the GR flowgraph audio output. GNU Radio seems to run for a second or two (probably the amount of time it takes to fill the buffer) then the Fox Telem Software crashes with exceptions: 'javax.sound.sampled.UnsupportedAudioFileException: could not get the audio input stream from input file.' In gnu radio I'm using the wav file sink with a single port and sample rate of 48k and 16bits. This "appears" to match what FoxTelem is expecting, but I'm getting the crashes. An alternative method I'm attempting is to use a standard audio sink in gnuradio (I can hear the audio on my laptop speakers) and then try to pipe that into the fox sw with a virtual audio cable. I'm attempting to use JACK and qjackctl, but I have little experience with this and so far have failed to get it to do anything other than listen to the soundcard mic and line in ports. If someone knows of a simple to use Virtual Audio Cable for Linux so that I can pipe the audio via the sound card that would be great and I can give that a go. The third method I'm trying to get working is by placing the fox sw in IQ mode and again attempting to use a 'wave file source' in foxtelem pointed at a FIFO to pipe the IQ data from GNU radio into foxtelem. again I get the exception mentioned above. This would be the preferred method in my case over the audio piping. If someone has any experience with this that would be great. For those familiar with GNU Radio I'm taking the complex stream (250ksps), reesampling to 192ksps, converting to float, then taking the real and complex streams and feeding them into a 'Wav file sink' with TWO ports pointed at the fifo, again with 16 bit depth and set to 192ksps. Foxtelem is looking for a wav file at 192ksps. I'm hoping the two port file sink allows I data on the right channel (in0) and Q data on the left channel (in1). Any and all pointers would be welcome. FoxTelem - Delete your test data

To FoxTelem users who loaded in a test wav file. You should DELETE the data before receiving live data. The test data has a later reset/uptime, so it will be displayed instead of the live data. You can do this from the File menu->Delete Payload Files. If you have already received some live data, and you are displaying something with a reset later than 0, then you are seeing your test data and not the live data. Rather than delete your files and lose the locally captured data, I suggest you edit the saved files and remove the test lines. Only the files Fox1rttelemetry.log, Fox1maxtelemetry.log and Fox1mintelemetry.log will contain the test data. Each line starts with the UTC date and then the FoxId, reset, uptime. Hi Chris thanks for the feedback. 1) real machine. I'm aware of the temp fix, and have a cable at home for the 'HW' loopback method (though thats cheating when your trying to build an SDR ground station :-)) 2) Working through using JACK and ALSA virtual devices, but like I said I'm new to it. 3) I'm using a .wav file sink in gnuradio. But instead of actually recording the audio and generate a true wav file (that could be imported by foxtelem later) the 'file' it is writing to is a FIFO buffer (aka pipe, created using the 'mkfifo' command). FoxTelem is then reading a wave file which is that same buffer. The goal being as bits get written into the FIFO from gnuradio, they get read out of the buffer by FoxTelem. What it looks like is exactly what you said. GNU radio is writing to the 'file' or FIFO at a fixed 48k sample rate. FoxTelem is probably trying to 'load the entire file' and is not throttling the rate those bits come in to match the 48k rate from gnuradio, thus resulting in 'EOF-type' errors and ultimately crashing. I think the quickest path to gettng up and running is the virtual audio cable piping method (for a pure SW solution). Downside of this is the loss of the ability to deliver the SNR and doppler metrics to the AMSAT network. So at some point I'll try to revisit the IQ pipe ideas (though plan A of faking it with an 'IQ wav file' will result in similar crashes). I'm not sure how FoxTelem handles interfacing with the funcube dongle or 'other SDRs.' I think it would auto-populate the option to select the funcube source if I actually had one plugged into my laptop and make use of the drivers for accessing the IQ stream, rather than 'reading a whole file'. What would be cool is if FoxTelem had some kind of 'generic IQ client mode' that could be selected. The idea would be when you select that option you enter in an IP and port #. Then foxtelem could be interfaced with things like the 'rtl_tcp' application for RTL-SDRs running on RPis or beaglebones or to the TCP sinks in GNU Radio. easy for me though to offer up ideas like that when I'm not the one that has to code it up though :-). Lilacsat 2 Heard Over DO33?

I tried the pass that started here just before 1500 UTC. I think I heard the downlink, though it was barely audible. If you have any cards you would like checked for VUCC/WAS, I will be at the Symposium. I will give preference to satellite contacts first before I check other bands/modes. If you are going to have cards checked, I prefer the list be in Grid Square order using an Excel spreadsheet or Word doc with the second column being the call sign worked. Place all your cards in the same grid square order as the list with any cards that contain multiple grids at the end of the stack. Well I was just sitting here and trying to figure out a convenient way to be alerted when any of thee satellites I watch/work is in range. The trouble is that I've already got [A] to [L] filled and still have Fox1 and several other recent birds to follow. Working RS0ISS-1?

Hi all, I'm just getting started with sats and tried to connect to the mailbox on the ISS this morning. I must have done the wrong thing because it didn't go how I expected. I tried to make an ordinary connection to RS0ISS-1 from VK7NTK-1 and RS0ISS-0 responded (I think to me?) with: RS0ISS>CQ:Logged on to RS0ISS's Personal Message System<0x0d> RS0ISS>CQ:on board the International Space Station<0x0d> This suggests to me that even the mailbox is using some sort of unproto system. I haven't seen any information anywhere about interacting with the mailbox that way. Would anyone be able to send me a link to up-to-date instructions, or explain what format it's expecting me to send, to which SSID? Many thanks, Tom VK7NTK

Good news - looks like Fox-1A will be launched tomorrow. Bad news - Don't try to work it immediately. (grin) Wait for word from AMSAT engineers when it is ready for us to work it. Keplerian data will be forthcoming, too, from AMSAT-NA. But the bird needs to be "set up" - and even if you think you hear something from it in the next few days, please do NOT try to access it until we are told we can - you may interrupt a control operator's access to the satellite. Telemetry in XW-2 CW beacon?

As you may be aware AMSAT-NA’s Fox-1A satellite is planned for launch on the morning of October 8th. We would like to set your expectations about what will be going on in the days immediately following the launch. *Keplerian Elements: * We will provide the Keplerian elements (aka Keps or TLEs) to enable you to track Fox-1a as soon after launch as we get them (and are cleared to release them). The information will be placed on http://www.amsat.org/amsat/ftp/keps/current/nasabare.txt and on the main AMSAT page at http://www.amsat.org . We have no control over when we can release the information, although we hope it will be within hours of the satellite deployment. *Initial Commissioning Period:* Initially the transponder will not be on and will not respond to uplinks. *Please do not attempt to uplink while we check out the satellite and commission it*. We will publicize when we have opened the transponder to general use. You should expect the checkout phase to last for a minimum of several days and possibly for several weeks. *What To Listen For:* During the initial checkout period and when the satellite is in range, every two minutes you will generally hear about 5 seconds of data followed by a few seconds of a voice ID (and possibly a second data packet). You may occasionally hear 'data' mode which Chris, G0KLA, has famously described as sounding like an old-fashioned telephone modem. Following liftoff, the Atlas will rise vertically for several seconds and then probably begin a gradual turn towards the south. The announced launch time is several minutes before the start of morning twilight at Vandenberg. If the rocket makes a gradual climb into orbit, the powered phase of the launch will probably end before the Atlas climbs into sunlight. In this case, the Atlas will resemble a moving orange or white light. However, if the rocket makes a steep climb into orbit, the Atlas initially will resemble a moving orange or white light. The rocket may then climb high enough during the powered phase of the launch for the exhaust plume to catch the Sun's rays, creating a weak Twilight Effect. I am listening to digital telemetry on Satellite LilacSat-2 437.190 (USB) at the moment. I do not recognize the audible type and thus can not try to decode it. Roughly around 1048Z . I thought I was going to be hearing the CW beacon of 437.200. Instead there was this odd-sounding telemetry. HDSDR SDRplay 817 issue

I'm trying to get HDSDR and SatPC32, to play nicely with HDRplay and an FT-817. I have the HDSDR working with SDRplay like Patrick has demonstrated on here and I'm trying to complete the setup for an fully automated system. I'm trying to get the setup working to the point that if I change the uplink frequency on the 817 with its physical dial the downlink on HDSDR will follow. I'm about half way there. I'm at the point if I change the downlink frequency in SatPC32 the HDSDR display changes with it, but not the 817's uplink frequency. When I first load SatPC32 the 817's frequency changes to the correct uplink frequency but doesn't update afterwards. I'm using VSP Manager to create the VSP's I think I'm a little confused about how this should all hook together serially. Anyone have this working 100% ? 73 Jeff kb2m

Hi all, Many of us are using USB to RS232 adaptors, mainly for connecting the station PC to transceivers CAT control, ROTOR controllers, and TNCs were needed. Although it seems that most, if not all, of the software programs work well under Windows 10, and updated drivers can be downloaded for most of the hardware, relatively old USB to RS232 adaptors might have chip sets that are not supported anymore with drivers for above Windows 7 (i.e. Windows 8 and Windows 10). There is a utility to check the chip set version provided by the vendor. It is highly recommended to check before starting the upgrade :) 73, Shamai 4Z1WS

On the 14:45 utc pass of NO-84 I saw the FM transmitter turned on continuously indicating someone was sending, but there was nothing on the down link except the telemetry at 312 Hz. This went on for many cycles of telemetry. Was someone calling CQ or trying to answer my CQ? If so, try moving your PSK31 signal lower in frequency, and don't forget to update TLE's if you are using the DopplerPSK program. KO6TZ Bob

XW-2 satellites outside international bandplan, who bothers ?

Hi AMSATs, I heard about the new satellites launched from China, which includes many transponders. For long time I have not been active anymore due to private reasons, but this great news triggered me to check the news again. It is great to see that transponder activities grow, but at the same time I feel that amateur spirit is gone when even international bandplans are violated on large scale. When I read the AMSAT-BB threats it seems that nobody bothers at all. In the past there were many discussions about AO-7 downlink that is outside the satellite band, while it was due to regulation change after launch. This was outside to hands of the satellite builders. Now we have satellites that work outside the satellite bandplan even known before launch. This is tolerated ? When this is tolerated then my next transponder design will be much easier to design for me.... I hope that someone at CAMSAT will do something about this, and I wonder why they allow this to happen at all... >From technical point off view, great work and continue with making amateur satellites (ofcourse inside the satellite bandplan). 73 de PE1RAH William Leijenaar

New OSCAR status page

Thanks to the efforts of Joe KM1P and Pete 2E0SQL, and with the permission of David, KD5QGR, we have set up a copy of the OSCAR satellite status page at http://www.amsat.org/status This page will be maintained by multiple volunteers, including myself, and we will be able to add and delete satellites as required, as well as keep information links current. It will take a few days to populate the database, but please begin using this page as soon as possible. In the near future the old page will point to this one for a while, until people get used to the new address. There are still some satellites to add and delete, so this will be a work in progress for a bit. Originally launched to the ISS on August 19, 2015 the two CubeSats, AAUSat-5 and GomX-3, will be deployed from the ISS Japanese Kibo module airlock. An astronaut will manipulate the Kibo robotic arm to lift AAUSAT-5 from the airlock and place it in orbit. Once deployed from the ISS the CubeSat will begin transmitting signals to Earth that can be picked up by anyone with common amateur radio equipment. The frequencies to listen on are: AAUSat-5 – 437.425 MHz with 30 WPM CW beacon every 3 minutes and 9600 bps GMSK packet every 30 seconds GomX-3 – 437.250 MHz with 1200-9600 bps GMSK data from a NanoCom AX100 using CSP protocol In addition to the amateur radio payloads new radio technology being demonstrated by GomX-3 will support the tracking of civil aircraft and measuring telecom satellite signal quality. AAUSat-5 will demonstrate the tracking of ships on the open sea. The IARU coordinated downlink frequencies are • 437.650 MHz at 0.5 watts (27 dBm) with either 25 WPM CW or 4800 bps MSK CSP packet data • 2404 MHz at 1 watt (30 dBm) using 1 Mbps QPSK See http://amsat-uk.org/2015/10/02/lqsat-launch/ [ANS thanks AMSAT-UK for the above information] --------------------------------------------------------------------- Beijing Launches Three More Amateur Radio Satellites On September 25, 2015 at 01:41 UT Beijing launched three satellites with amateur radio payloads from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center (JSLC) in the Gobi desert, Inner Mongolia. They were carried on a new launcher, Beijing’s first solid-fuel rocket Chang Zheng 11 (CZ-11), and deployed in a 470 x 485 km, 97.3 degree inclination Sun Synchronous Orbit (SSO). This launch occurred just over 5 days after nine satellites carrying amateur radio payloads were launched by Beijing from the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center (TSLC) in Shanxi on September 19 at 23:01 UT. The satellites were developed by students at the Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics in collaboration with the Shanghai Engineering Center for Microsatellites (SECM). The main goal of the mission is to experiment with Software Defined Radio (SDR) in space. The amateur radio payloads will be used for exchanging Telemetry, Tracking and Command (TT&C) information with the amateur radio ground control station. Information about the telemetry will be made publicly available so that radio amateurs around the world may track and monitor the health of the satellites. Other payloads include a video camera along with receivers for dual-band GPS/Beidou, Maritime Automatic Identification System (AIS) and Aeronautical Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast (ADS-B). Using MEMS based cold-gas micropropulsion it is planned to demonstrate formation flying by two of the CubeSats along with inter satellite communication using GAMALINK 2.4 GHz spread spectrum at 1 Mbps and the CubeSat Space Protocol (CSP). The TW-1A and TW-1B CubeSats are 2U (20x10x10cm) in size while TW-1C is 3U (30x10x10cm). Deployment took place 23 minutes later. LAPAN-A2 is in a 650 km orbit with an inclination of 6 degrees. It takes about 110 minutes to orbit the Earth and should pass over Indonesia and other near equatorial locations 14 times a day. The low inclination equatorial orbit means it will be receivable from about 30 degrees North to 30 degrees South. About a third of the world’s population, over 2.4 billion people, live within the coverage area of the satellite. The ground station at the LAPAN Satellite Technology Centre in Rancabungur, Bogor has made contact with LAPAN-A2. There will now be a period of activation and testing of all the satellite systems and it is expected to be about a month before the amateur radio payload becomes available for general use. The primary aims of the mission are Earth observation using an RGB camera and maritime traffic monitoring using AIS, both using frequencies outside the Amateur Satellite Service. Thirteen students were able to ask 17 questions of astronaut Kimiya Yui before the signal was lost. Fukara Junior High School is located in the eastern part of Susono City in Shizuoka Prefecture. Susono faces magnificent Mt. Fuji to the northwest, and extends to the crater of Mt. Hakone in the east. We have an unbroken view from the foot of Mt. Fuji to Suruga Bay.This school is a smaller school with only 147 students – 2 classes for each grade. The students are friendly and obedient and the school is always full of activity. All of the students belong to a sports team – we have baseball, basketball, volleyball, tennis, and table tennis teams, so all of the students are involved in sports. Integrated activities are the focus of our educational philosophy. For example, we perform a play each year called “The Canal of Life”, in which the students study about local history and perform a play about the work left behind by our forbearers – an irrigation canal that was built in the area. Through this kind of study, the students develop many strong ties to their community as well as pride in their hometown. Also, all the students in the school analyze newspaper articles each morning to build awareness of current events around the world. They form their own thoughts and opinions about each article, and discuss their opinions with friends to further develop their thought process. This is how we are promoting the NIE program (Newspapers in Education). The opportunity to talk with Mr. Yui via wireless transmission is a valuable experience to the students. In December 2013 the schools joined the ARISS School Contacts project. In 2004 the Nicolaus Copernicus School Amateur Radio called SP1KMK was established. Since then our students have been keenly developing their radio ham interests. Students have taken part in astronomy and astronautics projects such as: MiniSat (they sent their own experiments in near space via balloons thanks to Copernicus Project Foundation), EarthKam (pupils ordered images of Earth taken from the ISS). There was also an educational project called “SUPERCOMPUTER” in which our students gained some knowledge of the latest wireless networking technologies. Apart from the above projects, they have made numerous astronomical observations and got involved in astrophotography. Prelaunch media briefings and launch commentary coverage will be carried live on NASA Television and the agency's website. Four of the CubeSats are NASA-sponsored and nine are NRO-sponsored, one of which was developed with NASA funding. All will be flown on the NRO's Government Rideshare Advanced Concepts Experiment (GRACE), which is an auxiliary payload aboard the NROL-55 mission. The CubeSat developed with NASA funding will evaluate the ability to point a small satellite accurately as it demonstrates data transfer by laser at rates of up to 200 Mb/s -- a factor of 100 increase over current high-end CubeSat communications systems. The NASA-sponsored CubeSats will test new small satellite control and communications systems, Earth observations, amateur radio communications and an X-Band radio science transponder. These CubeSats also include the first to be designed, built and operated by students in Alaska and the first from Native American tribal college students. Small satellites, including CubeSats, are playing an increasingly larger role in exploration, technology demonstration, scientific research and educational investigations at NASA. These miniature satellites provide a low-cost platform for NASA missions, including planetary space exploration; Earth observations; fundamental Earth and space science; and developing precursor science instruments like cutting-edge laser communications, satellite-to-satellite communications and autonomous movement capabilities. They also allow an inexpensive means to engage students in all phases of satellite development, operation and exploitation through real-world, hands-on research and development experience on NASA-funded rideshare launch opportunities. Originally launched to the ISS on August 19, 2015 the two CubeSats, AAUSat-5 and GomX-3, will be deployed from the ISS Japanese Kibo module airlock. An astronaut will manipulate the Kibo robotic arm to lift AAUSAT-5 from the airlock and place it in orbit. Once deployed from the ISS the CubeSat will begin transmitting signals to Earth that can be picked up by anyone with common amateur radio equipment. They were carried on a new launcher, Beijing’s first solid-fuel rocket Chang Zheng 11 (CZ-11), and deployed in a 470 x 485 km, 97.3 degree inclination Sun Synchronous Orbit (SSO). This launch occurred just over 5 days after nine satellites carrying amateur radio payloads were launched by Beijing from the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center (TSLC) in Shanxi on September 19 at 23:01 UT. The satellites were developed by students at the Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics in collaboration with the Shanghai Engineering Center for Microsatellites (SECM). The main goal of the mission is to experiment with Software Defined Radio (SDR) in space. The amateur radio payloads will be used for exchanging Telemetry, Tracking and Command (TT&C) information with the amateur radio ground control station. Information about the telemetry will be made publicly available so that radio amateurs around the world may track and monitor the health of the satellites. Other payloads include a video camera along with receivers for dual-band GPS/Beidou, Maritime Automatic Identification System (AIS) and Aeronautical Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast (ADS-B). Using MEMS based cold-gas micropropulsion it is planned to demonstrate formation flying by two of the CubeSats along with inter satellite communication using GAMALINK 2.4 GHz spread spectrum at 1 Mbps and the CubeSat Space Protocol (CSP). The TW-1A and TW-1B CubeSats are 2U (20x10x10cm) in size while TW-1C is 3U (30x10x10cm). Deployment took place 23 minutes later. LAPAN-A2 is in a 650 km orbit with an inclination of 6 degrees. It takes about 110 minutes to orbit the Earth and should pass over Indonesia and other near equatorial locations 14 times a day. The low inclination equatorial orbit means it will be receivable from about 30 degrees North to 30 degrees South. About a third of the world’s population, over 2.4 billion people, live within the coverage area of the satellite. The ground station at the LAPAN Satellite Technology Centre in Rancabungur, Bogor has made contact with LAPAN-A2. There will now be a period of activation and testing of all the satellite systems and it is expected to be about a month before the amateur radio payload becomes available for general use. The primary aims of the mission are Earth observation using an RGB camera and maritime traffic monitoring using AIS, both using frequencies outside the Amateur Satellite Service. Susono faces magnificent Mt. Fuji to the northwest, and extends to the crater of Mt. Hakone in the east. We have an unbroken view from the foot of Mt. Fuji to Suruga Bay.This school is a smaller school with only 147 students – 2 classes for each grade. The students are friendly and obedient and the school is always full of activity. All of the students belong to a sports team – we have baseball, basketball, volleyball, tennis, and table tennis teams, so all of the students are involved in sports. Integrated activities are the focus of our educational philosophy. For example, we perform a play each year called “The Canal of Life”, in which the students study about local history and perform a play about the work left behind by our forbearers – an irrigation canal that was built in the area. Through this kind of study, the students develop many strong ties to their community as well as pride in their hometown. Also, all the students in the school analyze newspaper articles each morning to build awareness of current events around the world. They form their own thoughts and opinions about each article, and discuss their opinions with friends to further develop their thought process. Since then our students have been keenly developing their radio ham interests. Students have taken part in astronomy and astronautics projects such as: MiniSat (they sent their own experiments in near space via balloons thanks to Copernicus Project Foundation), EarthKam (pupils ordered images of Earth taken from the ISS). There was also an educational project called “SUPERCOMPUTER” in which our students gained some knowledge of the latest wireless networking technologies. LoTW, trying to get it right

Ok, I admit it. I am really hedging on completing my LoTW set-up and loading QSO's. It just seems like a very unforgiving system -- no ability to correct. I read the N5JB tutorial multiple times; I want to do this right, out of the gate. Again, for the "rovers" and portable ops -- best way to configure myself? Should I have locations for each grid that I work from? If I would like a /M or /QRP endorsement for some of the HF awards, should I have a separate "location" for that, too? W1PA_FN42 (home) W1PA_FN44 W1PA_FN13 etc. W1PA/M? W1PA/QRP? What's the best way to set up locations if I work from many different locations? I see references in the VHF and UHF groups not to do this (deleting the /R) -- how should I do this? Bill W1PA

Help from two: Dan Cussen and Perry-WB8OTH. One issue looks solved: I have an old Celetron Dell that I upgraded to XP and added memory to max which has a printer port. Dave Lamont, designer of the Univac, email bounces so no info from him but Perry has the Univac-2000 and the manual which I will borrow to scan. Lastly SatPC32 does not show the Unitrac but my copy of Nova does. So thanks to Dan and Perry I might get it going. Probably the big issue will whether it will I/F with my K3 and KX3 for tuning control. Maybe not but looks promising for auto-tracking. Winter is licking our heals in AK already (10-inch snow up north and snow flurries here on Sunday), so race will be on to get antennas and electronic box installed back on the old P3E tracking tower. I will not have a 50w 432 amp but drive from the 20w transverter in the house (10w at M2 436CP26); 144-MHz using the KX3 and 25w amp; preamps and TR relays for both bands at the tower, plus a 2.4G patch antenna (optimistic). Hi all, On the web http://oscar.dcarr.org/ is sometimes visible row with newly launched Chinese XW-2 sats. But on the "Select satellite" combo box these sats are missing. Why is not possible or maybe how to spot these sats ? In Europe, XW-2E and XW-2F sats are daily used by many oscarmans.. This web page is very useful for us. Thanks for response. Lilacsat 2 Over DO33

I worked 2 passes earlier today using my IC-910 and putting 5 W into my Arrow yagi. The first had a high elevation and I was able to reach the bird once it came from behind my building. The signal was good until about a minute after TCA when it became harder to hear. I don't think that was due to an adjacent tower in my apartment complex. The second one had a maximum elevation of about 10 degrees. I'm not sure I heard my downlink but, if I did, it was very weak and down in the noise, even though there were few obstructions. I noticed something similar during the pass I monitored early morning UTC yesterday (i. e., Tuesday evening local time). Re: [amsat-bb] Mirage T-injector Problem

Finally did diagnose the problem as a 2.5 volt drop under load at the T-injector. With the output on the bench showing barely 11v under load this brought the voltage down to the bottom end of what the ARR preamp needs to function. I suspect that under load at the end of 60' of coax it was even lower than 11v. Jay at ARR was very helpful in working with me to get to the bottom of the mystery as I had the same problem with two different vintage Mirage T-injectors and both worked fine with Mirage and Icom preamps, so it was quite a mystery. We determined that if you eliminate the 10ohm resister off the injector pwr switch and replace it with a jumper the problem is solved. Of course I could have used a separate line to remotely power the ARR preamps but that was going to be very difficult at my QTH. Problem it looks like is solved. And thanks to everyone for your useful suggestions and questions that led to solving the mystery. 73 Rick, W2JAZ

finally worked Lilacsat-2

Finally this morning I made a LilacSat contact with WI9I on orbit 172 a few minutes ago. I found that switching to left handed circular polarization and turning the RIT to about 5 khz offset then I started hearing something. The elevation was about 20 degrees but the signal was still very noisy. Then I noticed that when the satellite got to a higher elevation I started to hear stronger signals from AA5PK. At this time the rec signal was better but then I could not get a signal into the bird. My guess is that as the keps get better that my antenna aiming will get better and then signals should be better. Just have to wait and see. Perry WB8OTH

First Crack at Lilac-Sat2

All, Finally got off my duff and set up for the 0125UT pass of Lilacsat2. From DM33 it was pretty good western pass, max elevation of 58 degrees. The radio was reprogrammed with the new downlink frequencies (thanks Clayton, Ted & Patrick). Heard nothing did not hear myself on the downlink. used my TD72A, so i was putting up 5 watts. Now I've heard several stations say they can't get in with 5w and other that can, i suspect antenna gain may be a factor here. Now one thing I did notice is when i keyed up, i did hear an increase in the noise on the downlink. Wonder if that was my signal barely getting in or not? Did anyone hear me (K7TEJ)? Just listened for LilacSat-2. I did not hear anything using RHCP then went to LHCP and started hearing someone. The problem is that the one voice I heard was very distorted and unreadable with a buzzing in the background. That lasted for the whole pass with the one station I heard disappearing quickly. There was a nice turnout on the 0147 UTC LilacSat-2 pass over the US west coast. Stations up and down the coast, and as far east as west Texas, were on. Unlike with the first QSO I made on this satellite last week, when it was raining very hard on my operating position in the yard, I was able to have a nice and calm evening. I used my Icom IC-2820H 2m/70cm FM mobile radio for my uplink transmitter, and an SDR setup for the downlink receiver - SDRplay SDR receiver, 8-inch Windows 10 tablet with HDSDR software - to operate full-duplex. I connected both of these through a diplexer to my Elk log periodic. I used HDSDR to make an RF recording of both downlinks - the FM repeater downlink around 437.200 MHz, and the digital telemetry downlink around 437.225 MHz. I think I had a better copy on the 437.225 MHz downlink tonight than over the weekend, and logged 6 contacts on the FM repeater. Last week, when I worked Glenn AA5PK, I was not able to get through with anything less than 50W transmit power. Tonight was not as bad, but I found that I couldn't get away with 5W for more than a few transmissions. The mid-power setting from my IC-2820H, 15W, worked better. High power (50W) worked well, too. None of these power levels desensed my SDRplay receiver. Maybe if the satellite was higher in the sky, and closer to passing over my head, I might have had better luck using the 5W power level. I saw a mixed reaction on Twitter - one reported needing to run 50W, and someone else said 5W was sufficient. Rather than posting the long and nasty URLs used by Dropbox for its public folders, I made a shorter URL that can take you to the recordings and other files I have been posting in my public Dropbox space: http://dropbox.wd9ewk.net/ For tonight's LilacSat-2 pass, look for the folder with the name "20150929-LilacSat2". If you have an SDR program on your computer or device, and have the bandwidth to download the RF recording, download the WAV file with the name starting with "HDSDR_20150929" in that folder. I also have an MP3 recording with the audio I heard during the pass, plus photos of my back yard setup and a screengrab from my phone's tracking app to show how the pass was for me in central Arizona. Late last week, I made a one-page graphic with a quick-reference guide for the LilacSat-2 FM repeater. This pass was the 3rd consecutive pass where LilacSat-2's FM repeater was operational over the continental USA. Lilac 2 Telemetry Signal Heard In DO33

I just heard what I assume was Lilac 2's telemetry during its last pass here starting from around TCA to LOS. It was a digital signal on the FM transponder downlink frequency. It consisted of a long tone followed a short one and was transmitted about every 30 seconds. I had no problems in hearing it once I knew where the bird was. 73s Bernhard VA6BMJ @ DO33FL

Mirage T-Injector Problem

I've finally diagnosed the problem with my new ARR preamp. I really thought it was the preamp until I got it on the bench and found that when I power the ARR preamp via the coax I see the under load the T-injector's DC output drops about 2.5 volts to about 11.15vdc. How can this be? Any suggestions on how to modify the T-injector so this doesn't happen? It strange as I've used several different Mirage injectors with their preamps and an Icom preamp with no problems but neither Mirage injector I own works with the ARR preamp. 73 Rick, W2JAZ
