Nothing on the telemetry at 9k6, CW strong on the satellites I had time to monitor. My code skill is POOR at best, but copied references to "CAMSAT" in English, and call signs of BJ1SB and BJ1SF. Does the CW contain telemetry that needs a decoder, or is it in mandarin? KO6TZ

Congrats to the CAMSAT team on the sucessful launch! I managed to work KO4MA on the 13:24 pass through XW-2F. As far as we know XW-2F and maybe E have the transponders on, and I can report all beacons on all satellites are on and very strong. I can't believe those things are running 100mw! On the 22:22 pass today im going to try to see if there are any more transponders on, and maybe decode some of the CW. In October we are going to have more satellites than we have to time to work them! Once again congrats to Alan for succesful launch and reception! [ANS thanks WEI Mingchuan, BG2BHC for the above information] --------------------------------------------------------------------- SERPENS CubeSat Deployed from ISS On September 17, 2015 the Brazilian SERPENS CubeSat carrying an amateur radio payload, call sign PY0ESA, was deployed from the International Space Station (ISS). SERPENS LogoSERPENS is a 3U CubeSat which was developed by students at the University of Brasilia and focuses on meteorological data collection. The SERPENS Amateur Radio Page shows these downlink frequencies: • 145.980 MHz using GFSK modulation at 9600 bps and AX.25 protocol transmiting two different beacons. The first occurs every 10 seconds with the message “SERPENS A”. This is implemented for easy identification of the satellite when searching for it. The second beacon is transmitted every 30 seconds and contains the main housekeeping data of the satellite. In addition to the beacons, a simple Store and Forward experiment has been implemented. • 437.365 MHz using CW/MSK modulation at 1200 bps and CSP protocol. There is a Store and Forward messaging system compatible with HUMSAT sensors on the frequency of 437.525 MHz, using GMSK modulation at 1200 bps. The HUMSAT transponder will collect data (e.g. wind, humidity, water levels, etc) from Earth based sensors operating on 437.525 MHz, store the data on-board and then transmit it to university ground stations. For more information visit http://www.humsat.org/ SERPENS carries a Pulsed Plasma Thruster for CUbesat Propulsion (PPTCUP) unit developed by UK companies Mars Space Ltd and Clyde Space Ltd in collaboration with the University of Southampton. The PPTCUP consists of a thruster board and discharge chamber. Overall, the thruster assembly weighs 180 grams including 7g of Teflon fuel and delivers a thrust of 40 micronewtons at a power consumption of 2 Watts. The entire thruster assembly fits into a 90 by 90 by 27-millimeter envelope.The thruster operates at a specific impulse of 608 seconds and in its original version is certified for 1.5 million shots. For durability, the system uses copper- tungsten electrodes. All thruster functions are controlled by a PIC16 microcontroller. Also deployed with SERPENS from the ISS was the CubeSat S-CUBE designed to observe the Ultraviolet (UV) spectrum during the Orionid meteor shower in October. It does not operate in the Amateur Satellite Service. Mogensen, Aimbetov, and cosmonaut Sergey Volkov, RU3DIS, had launched in a Soyuz transporter to the ISS on September 2 from Baikonur cosmodrome. Aimbetov -- who had replaced "space tourist" and British singer Sarah Brightman on the Soyuz flight -- and Mogensen took part in the 10-day ESA mission to test new technologies and conduct a series of scientific experiments. Mogensen is Denmark's first astronaut, while Aimbetov is the first Kazakh cosmonaut. The trio undocked from the orbiting complex on September 11 in the Soyuz spacecraft that had been attached to the ISS, leaving the vessel they arrived in for the station crew. Yes, thanks Andy, for the update. I haven't had a chance to test it extensively, but the sound card selection function seems to work. I selected a SignaLink USB, which was not my default sound card, and a press of the DopplerPSK TX button caused the PTT of the SignaLink USB to key up properly. Thanks, Red KC4LE

A "message loop" feature to aid in QSOs or other experiments where it might be desirable to have a message sent in a loop. The message format and UI is similar to that used in WSJT. Hopefully this is useful for slow typists, especially when fading and/or SNR is a problem. See the new Quick-Start guide for details on how to set up your own messages if the ones provided are insufficient. The original keyboard-to-keyboard mode is still there on another tab. 2. Fixed a couple bugs with saving of station information. 3. Updated the Doppler correction updates to once-per-second instead of every 5 seconds. This should improve tracking on very high elevation passes. In these situations it is critical that your clock be synchronized with UTC as close as possible to minimize residual frequency drift. 4. Added ability to select a sound output device separate from system default. This isn't extensively tested, but those of you who have multiple soundcards for your digital stuff might find it useful. Good evening, I can report that FUNcube-1 was switched back to autonomous mode at around 21:19 UTC this evening. A reminder for next weekend – As AMSAT-UK is holding their Collloquium event in Guildford Surrey, it is expected that FUNcube-1 will be switched to continuous transponder mode , exceptionally, from Thursday evening (July 23rd) until either Sunday evening (July 26th) or, more likely, Monday evening (July 27th). Hello It looks like the pre-lauch TLE file of XW-2 is erroneous. The checksum number of the first line should < 2 > and not zero as we can read currently. Maybe the - sign is not taken into account in the calculation ? This makes some satellite tracking software (Sat_Explorer) rejecting such TLE !!! APRS with AGW/UISS & Icom 9100...

Hello group! I'm new to the list and I'm looking to dive deep into the satellite end of the hobby. I am currently building a decent az/el station, and can't wait to work some birds. One of the other things I really want to do is hit the digipeater on the ISS and decode telemetry. So I began working on APRS using AGW Packet Engine with UISS by ON6MU. I've managed to configure my station to decode packets and I can even send them, but I cannot, for the life of me, figure out how trigger the IC9100 to transmit. I'm using the digital mode on the 9100, and if I manually hit transmit on the radio, I can send a packet successfully... However, after following the instructions here ( http://www.issfanclub.com/node/37988) I still can't figure out how to "create ports that are linked" nor "split the ports" nor use the ICOM Keyer / AGW interface to facilitate RTS The 9100 is using COM9 and COM10 on my computer. I can get the 9100 to key with WSPR and WSJT, but not with AGW/UISS. I was hoping to use Ham Radio Deluxe to manage the doppler, and not SatPC Any IC9100 owners have a similar setup and have any ideas or insights? ...or has a similar problem been solved before? The Install Wizard keeps giving me an Error saying I don't havesufficient privileges and I must be logged-in as Administrator. But,I AM the Administrator!!! HELP!! On Wednesday, Sept. 16, the K4AMG club is providing the IEEE Chapter at Old Dominion University an amateur radio, electronics, and wireless communications event on the lawn of the ODU student center. We will attempt some satellite passes and HF communications. Set up time will be at 8 am EST and tear down will be 5 pm EST. We hope to make a few contacts. Not knowing band conditions we will have to make on the spot band choices. We will have a CubeSat demo using the AMSAT Cube SAT simulator. ARR preamp follow up

i appreciate all the suggestions I received and owe you a follow up. After further diagnosis in the air and on the ground I can say with confidence that there is a problem with the relay switching when the preamp is powered through the coax. When it occasionally engages it works great and I had a string of QSOs on SO50 last night to prove it. I spoke with ARR on the phone today and they confirmed it's likely a relay problem and that I should return it for a new board or relay. I'm concerned that it wasn't diagnosed the first time I returned it just after buying it. And of course there are those multiple trips to the roof at age 66! For the time being I'm back on the air with my old, somewhat noisy Mirage. 73, Rick W2JAZ

What is it all about, and is it only testing for longer travel time or can it be used in some way here on earth in everyday life? Because Kornienko and Kelly are the two on that, and the callsign being used is NA1SS and only the Russian, Kornienko, has a license. Thanks Mike. I am not bothered at all that my forwarded packets don't make it. I certainly don't need to find ways of getting them to APRS-IS faster, but thanks for the advice anyway. When I looked at the captured packets on APRS-IS, it seemed to me that mine were getting lost. I wondered if I had something set up wrongly. If other stations are getting the first packets in, that is great. If the APRS-IS didn't work this way, then I would see a list on the findu site of duplicate packets from various Sgates. Your reassurance is something of a relief. I am rebuilding much of my house and running an Sgate is a little awkward. It is good to know that it won't matter much if I stop because all other ZL and VK Sgate stations are copying the packets anyway. It's all good. Proposals are due Nov. 1, 2015. Informational sessions about ARISS and to help organizations in preparing their proposals, the ARISS program coordinator will offer hour-long online information sessions. These are designed to provide more information regarding U.S. ARISS contacts and the proposal process, and offer an opportunity to ask questions. While attending an online information session is not required, it is strongly encouraged. Informational sessions will be offered Sept. 17, 2015, at 4 p.m. EDT; Sept. 22, 2015, at 4 p.m. EDT, and Sept. 30, 2015, at 7 p.m. EDT. Advance registration is necessary. [ANS thanks Peter, W2JV, for the above information] --------------------------------------------------------------------- SAREX Reflector to be Closed 1 November 2015 At the request of the ARISS US Team, AMSAT-NA Vice President for Human Spaceflight Frank Bauer, KA3HDO has announced that the SAREX reflector will be closed 1 November 2015, and its functions folded into the AMSAT-BB list. Frank explained that at one time operations from the Space Shuttle and the ISS were considered as sufficiently different from other satellite operations as to need separate forums for their respective interest communities. More recently, changes in the human spaceflight operations, the new generation of satellites, and the interests of the general AMSAT community have removed the reasons for this distinction. Frank explained that "The AMSAT membership, in general, has embraced all vehicles with amateur radio on-board that are operating in space on equal ground. They enjoy the SSTV events on ISS as well as a quick QSO on AO-7". He went on to note that "This past year my team has noticed that those on AMSAT-BB have missed out on some ARISS significant events. These include school contacts in their area that were only posted on SAREX." Moving all discussions to a common list will insure that ISS announcements as well as operational information will be available in one place. What does this mean to the current subscribers? [ANS thanks ARISS for the above information] --------------------------------------------------------------------- QB50 CubeSats to be deployed from ISS It has been announced that the fifty CubeSat QB50 constellation should be shipped to the International Space Station (ISS) in July 2016 for subsequent deployment. It had been planned for them to be launched by Alcantara Cyclone Space, a joint venture between the governments of Ukraine and Brazil, but that option is not longer available. The AlbertaSat website reports on the 9th QB50 Workshop, held September 8, 2015 in Liège, Belgium. The CubeSats are now planned to be deployed from the ISS using the Japanese Experiment Module (JEM) and the Nanoracks CubeSat Deployers. Eight NanoRacks deployers are installed on the Multi-Purpose Experiment Platform (MPEP). Each deployer has a capacity of 6U and so can hold up to six 1U, three 2U or two 3U CubeSats. They are carried by Japanese Experiment Module-Remote Manipulator System (JEM-RMS). AlbertaSat provide an update on the QB50 precursor CubeSats P1/P2 which were launched in 2014. The first payload is working, and while it has been resetting, no damage appears to have occurred. It is possible that the second payload is damaged, but it is still functioning. Representatives from QB50 also took the time to clearly define their goals and specify the details of the project. The project aims to probe probe thermosphere with about 40 sensors which study atmospheric science. These sensors include the Langmuir Probes that will be on Ex Alta-1. 40 CubeSats will be fitted with one of these sensors. The other 10 CubeSats will have in-orbit demonstrations. Dave, KG5CCI, reports: On Saturday, September 5, 2015 at 1812 UTC I made a scheduled contact with Manuel, EA5TT, using AO-7 Mode B, from the old US Forest Service Fire Tower on top of ‘Rich Mountain’ here in extreme western Arkansas. My 10 digit grid locator was EM24UQ01MU while Manuel is located in IM99SL48CX, in Valencia, Spain. This equates to 7947.381 km which we believe to be a new record for AO-7 Mode B. I fully plan on writing a more extensive post when I return from the holiday weekend, and I will likely make a proper video with commentary and data as well. I’ve made some really interesting observations when it comes to Satellite operating from places with great ‘Height Above Average Terrain’ and look forward to sharing this analysis with everyone. ARR preamp problem

I bought the mast mount RF switching version of the ARR 70cm preamp this summer with the idea of upgrading the stations both at home and the vacation station. I had them install the choke so I could power it through the coax. It worked maybe once and very well at the vacation station and then was deaf as a stump. Switching it inline made no difference one way or the other. I sent it back and they put it on the bench for hours and then returned it when they could find no problem. We came back recently to the home QTH before I could try it again. I just swapped it out for the old, but working Mirage preamp. Guess what....it is deaf! I'm powering it through the coax as always. What could I possibly be doing wrong or missing here? 73 Rick, W2JAZ

I plan to leave for my Fall Grid Trip on Thu 9/17 which willtake me through northern Ontario and Quebec. The first day will take me from my home QTH in EN91 toNorth Bay, ON, FN06. On Fri 9/18, I'll go through FN07 onmy way to Timmins, ON, EN98. On Sat 9/19, I'll do moreEN98 and hopefully get up to EN99. Sunday 9/19 will take me through FN08 and over to Val d'Or,QC, in FN18. On Mon 9/21, I'll go through FN17 and 16 andend up in Mont Tremblat, QC, FN26. On Tue 9/22, I go toWatertown, NY, FN24 and home to EN91 on Wed 9/23. I usually work FO29 10-15 KHz up from centerband and SO50if I can squeeze my Call into the fray. Not ever knowing whatMode AO7 will be in, I might give it a try. Never been on AO73. Hi, I sometimes see received packets (like the one below) that show as gated to the net by my Sgate, but do not make it to findu (http://www.findu.com/cgi-bin/pcsat.cgi). Is there anything I can do, change, alter, or configure, to increase the chances of the packet making it to the findu site? The gate is currently running on an old Windows machine and the gating is completed by UIView. Good morning! After a drive of over 300 miles last night, I am in California for today. I will be on the upcoming SO-50 pass around 1427 UTC from grid DM14 in Yucaipa CA, then back on the road to the ARRL Southwest Division Convention in Torrance to see what's there and meet up with some local satellite operators. I may be on one or two FO-29 passes from the convention, which is in grid DM03. Please call WD9EWK if you hear me. JAXA announced CubeSats deploy from ISS with J-SSOD at 17th Sep. CubeSat name is not shown on the announce. However, NASA's ISS On- Orbit Status Report 09/09/15 shows the followings; JAXA-Small Satellite Orbital Deployer (SSOD) #4 Install: Kelly installed the J-SSOD#4 on the Slide Table with the Multi-Purpose Experiment Platform (MPEP) attached. The J-SSOD #4 has two satellites that will be deployed next week. The first satellite is designed to observe the Ultraviolet (UV) spectrum during the Orionid meteor shower in October. The second satellite, sponsored by the University of Brasilia and the Brazilian government focuses on meteorological data collection. So, the first one must be S-CUBE and the second is SERPENS. Hi! Omar XE1AO sent me an e-mail, mentioning that he will be operating as XE719SEP on the satellites on 19-20 September 2015. XE719SEP is a special-event station commemorating the earthquakes that hit Mexico City on those dates in 1985. The "719" in the call sign represents the local time of the first earthquake, 7.19am on 19 September 1985. Officially, the XE719SEP stations will operate until 0040 UTC on 21 September, corresponding to 7.40pm local time on 20 September 1985 - the time of the second massive earthquake. Other operators will use XE719SEP on other bands and modes during this weekend. Good evening, For those of us who enjoy the roar of a rocket engine before bedtime Arianespace is launching tonight. The eighth launch of the year from the Guiana Space center in French Guiana, and the second with a Soyuz, Arianespace will orbit two satellites Galileo FOC-M3, satellites 9 & 10 for the European Space Agency. (non-amateur radio payloads) It will be launched from the Soyuz launch complex ELS, in Kourou, French Guiana. New AO-7 Distance Record?

From the OPDX Bulletin 1230 September 7, 2015: BIRD DISTANCE RECORD! [Possible New Distance Record on the AO-7 Satellite]. Dave, KG5CCI, operating portable on a mountain in Grid EM24UQ worked EA5TT in Grid IM99SL on September 5th at approximately 1812 UTC on the AO-7 satellite in Mode B (U/V). The distance according to Tiny Locator was 7931km. The high elevation in EM24 made it possible to exceed the theoret- ical 7900km maximum range for AO-7. AO-7 was launched in 1974 and went silent in 1981. It came back to life in 2002 and now operates when in sunlight from its circular 1450km orbit. Congratulations to Dave and Manuel! Stations needed on the Colorado Amateur Satellite net

I run the Colorado Amateur Satellite net here in Denver. I am OK at satellites but by no means an expert. I am wondering if anybody wants to join the net and either talk about their station, or just help beginners if they have any questions. The net airs every Thursday Evening at 6PM West Coast time 7PM Mountain time, 8PM Central time, 9PM East coast time in the US. The net is on AllStar link , EchoLink, and Soon to be on IRLP again. Norsat downconverters

I've run across 2 Norsat 2500's from the AO-40 days in my shack. One has had the crystal replaced, the other needs a 8.5Mhz crystal for 2mtr output. Both are in the original box and look like new. Asking $45 for the modified and $35 for unmodified plus $10 each shipping USPS. Jeff KK7WR

Should be doable. remember to set the APRS path to ARISS. menu->APRS -> PacketPath -> Type -> Others -> path : ARISS (menu 3H1) Once entered press the Mhz Button and you should see an asterisk by "Others" With this you can switch back and forth between the new paradigm and ISS without having to enter it each time you switch. You can also append W3ADo-3 for No-44 and W3ADO-5 for NO-84. Separate them with a comma. frequency is 145.85. How to use PC logging sofware with SatPC32?

I have been writing down satellite QSOs on scratch paper and then manually entering them into DXLab. I'd like to be a little bit more modern and efficient than that! How are other people using their logging software with sat QSOs? My FT-847 serial port is tied up with my sat tracking software SatPC32's Doppler correction feature so I'm not sure how to get the frequency data to the logging software. September 7 Western USA High Altitude Balloon Flight Includes Repeater Package The LSU HASP (High Altitude Student Platform) project expects to make a launch attempt in the early morning on Monday September 7 around 7:30 AM MDT (UTC - 6). This amateur radio payload, featuring a crossband repeater, will be riding a 12 million cubic foot zero pressure balloon lifting about 2000 pounds to an altitude of about 125,000 ft. Jack (W7JLC) and Bryan (W7BNW) from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University have installed a cross-band repeater along with the assortment of science payloads. Uplink: 145.560 MHZ, 162.2 tone access Downlink: 445.525 MHz When crossband is not active, APRS on 445.925 MHz Launch is from Ft. Sumner NM, and the balloon will drift generally westward. When it reaches its float alitude of 125,000 ft the radio footprint will be almost 1000 miles in diameter, reaching roughly from Dallas and San Antonio to Phoenix and up past Denver to Ft. Collins, and down to Chihuahua in Mexico. The flight duration is expected to be 15 to 20 hours. The LSU HASP team and W7JLC and W7BNW invite hams to try the repeater. I built my webpage in 1996. It stayed mostly the same over all the years with a few additions here and there. Well, in 2013 I installed WordPress on the server and it sat. Yesterday, I converted most of the old webpages over to WordPress. Of course, WordPress blocks all Java/JavaScript and I have removed my scripts. They can be added but not recommended in today's world. I also optimized the site for mobile devices. This information was critical to understand whether GPS could be practically used for Positioning, Navigation and Timing (PNT) at altitudes above the constellation as well as to map out the GPS satellite antenna patterns, including the side-lobe signals. At the time, the GPS flight experiment flown on AO-40 was the most comprehensive data reception of GPS signals above the constellation. The AO-40 experiment was cited many times in aerospace literature as it remained the most comprehensive above the constellation data source for nearly a decade. AO-40 mapped the GPS vehicles main and side lobe signals. These results have led many, internationally, to develop weak signal GPS receivers to fly in HEO/GEO in an effort to extract as much navigation and timing data from GPS as possible. As a result of the AO-40 experiment, the following has occurred: • In 2006, GPS modified its specifications to protect the main lobe signal for above the constellation space users • Global space agencies, including NASA, and commercial manufacturers have invested millions of dollars into weak signal tracking GPS receivers that can exploit GPS in HEO/GEO orbits • Missions flown in the past 12 months have demonstrated game- changing PNT performance improvements through the use of GPS in HEO/GEO • GPS main and side lobe signals are now routinely being used on many HEO/GEO space vehicles to improve their PNT performance • Earth weather satellites at GEO will soon use GPS to predict hurricanes and observe severe storms, saving lives • Space weather satellites are measuring the dynamics of the ionosphere, potentially protecting astronauts in space and enabling better prediction of ionospheric effects • NASA is working with the GPS directorate on potentially modifying the GPS specification again, this time to protect the GPS sidelobe signals for users in HEO/GEO orbits. The results from AO-40 have jump-started a profound and game- changing transformation in navigation at HEO/GEO altitudes. It is enabling new and exciting missions in these orbits. This represents a tremendous accomplishment for humanity and will result in saving countless lives. And AMSAT played a key role in making this happen. Bauer received his Engineering Bachelor's and Master's degree in Aeronautics and Astronautics from Purdue University. His aerospace career spans over 40 years within NASA and private industry. In his current position he serves as President/Sole Proprietor of FBauer Aerospace Consulting Services, providing systems engineering, GN&C, spaceborne GPS/GNSS, formation flying and small spacecraft development expertise and consultation services. Currently, he supports NASA as a Standing Review Board member of the Commercial Crew program and as a discipline expert as part of the NASA Engineering and Safety Center GN&C Technical Discipline team. He also represents the U.S. government on GPS/GNSS Strategy and Policy, including representing the U.S. on international delegations negotiating joint GNSS interoperability strategies. Mr. Bauer's primary research interests include spaceborne applications of the Global Positioning System (GPS) and space vehicle formation flying. He was the principal investigator of 4 spaceflight GPS and formation flying experiments including the AMSAT- OSCAR-40 GPS experiment, investigating the use of GPS above the constellation. His hobbies include astronomy, amateur radio, and flying. Frank obtained his amateur radio license in 1974 while he was a high school student. Using the callsign KA3HDO, Frank has dedicated his amateur radio activities to several space-related amateur radio initiatives. He is the Vice President of Human Spaceflight Programs for the Radio Amateur Satellite Corporation (AMSAT-NA), the Chairman of the Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) international team and the ARISS-US team program manager. As such, he has led the ARISS international team in the development, qualification, testing, and operation of the ham radio systems on- board ISS. This team has pioneered a ham radio system on ISS that serves the amateur radio community through educational outreach, public outreach, and amateur radio experimentation. Frank was also responsible for setting up and operating the world- wide retransmission of Space Shuttle Air-to-Ground Communications from the Goddard Amateur Radio Club, WA3NAN. ARISS anticipates that the contact would be held between July 1 and December 31, 2016. Crew scheduling and ISS orbits will determine the exact contact dates. To maximize these radio contact opportunities, ARISS is looking for organizations that will draw large numbers of participants and integrate the contact into a well-developed education plan. Informational Sessions To help organizations in preparing their proposals, the ARISS Program Coordinator will offer hour-long online information sessions. An ARISS contact is a voice-only communication opportunity via Amateur Radio between astronauts and cosmonauts aboard the space station and classrooms and communities. ARISS contacts afford education audiences the opportunity to learn firsthand from astronauts what it is like to live and work in space and to learn about space research conducted on the ISS. Students also will have an opportunity to learn about satellite communication, wireless technology, and radio science. Because of the nature of human spaceflight and the complexity of scheduling activities aboard the ISS, organizations must demonstrate flexibility to accommodate changes in contact dates and times.
