New Rotator X/Y as opposed to Azimuth/Elevation SPX X-Y Rotor I am thinking of purchasing a new tracking system design, which uses an unusual way of pointing the antenna. I was wondering if anyone else has used this product or even the nearly identical non XY model? http://www.rfhamdesign.com/products/spx-light-antenna-rotator/spx-x-y-rotor… Youtube video at the bottom does not work. The benefits of it are supposedly better/faster positioning at the elevation peak, due to the "two elevation, one over another" design. Not 0.1 degrees as per some expensive systems. Cheaper computer interface/features compared to more expensive models. Not available from anywhere else (yet) 3 weeks minimum delivery time Strange to understand design Strange to understand config. The az & el degrees are converted to XY positions. The main reason for taking the risk, is I want to do some small dish tests for HAMTV from the ISS, and even most expensive tracking systems, are too slow at fast peak elevations, particularly with narrow beamwidth dishes. i would concur with everything the first responder said. Cranky I love mine for satellites. I've used it since I bought in new many years ago. CAT works great but it does require a less typical null modem cable. Mine is completely unmodified and I really should buy some filters for it, but despite the filters I've worked tons of DX with it on HF. Does it compare to my Flex5000....no! But it doesn't cost that much. The only thing I could recommend more at this point would be a fully loaded Flex5000a with the 2nd RX and V/U module. It works very well for satellites with satpc32 and has the added advantage of the panadapter where you can see signals including your downlink. As for repairs, the only repair I had to have done with my 847 was the on-off power switch. I should add that I also had a TS-2000 for a time but sold it in favor of keeping my 847 largely because of one or two features, the primary one being that unlike the 2000 the Yaesu powers your external preamps through the coax with no problems. I found that other rigs that don't offer is feature just add additional issues, though to be fair some guys prefer separating their preamps in terms of DC power. So that's my vote, get a good 847 if you can find one. 73 Rick W2JAZ

I've never used a 736r, so I can't compare, but I presently have an 847. It is an excellent satellite rig but not nearly as good as my TS-690s was on HF, (I chase DX) However I've been learning to adapt and still bagging new ones. Plus the extra 50 watts on 6m is nice. I also found it is not nearly as user friendly with my MFJ external tuner... I have to adjust power on the rig before hitting the tune button on the tuner. With my kenwood, it was one button tuning right on the rig. Some of it's quirks... it is prone to having problems with the power switch going out. Mine has lost the 'catch' and won't stay closed, others have had the contacts burn out. I have mine 'jumpered' in behind the switch and I turn power on and off at the supply. Some have an issue of low headphone volume, but that mostly is because it's designed for low impedance headphones, not the 32 ohms ones commonly available today. If you plan to use computer control the very earliest models did not have bi-directional serial ports, but that can be checked by the serial number... I believe it's a small number of rigs. Google is your friend for information on that. =^) For satellite, the named sat memories are nice and it has built in preamps or it can power remote preamps. The extra filters are a little hard to come by and can be expensive.I've only acquired a CW filter. Their are no birdies that I am aware of. The rig was designed for satellite and that remains it's forte. I had both rigs on my bench until my 690 developed a problem. Once I got used to the 847 on HF, it was nice not to have to switch my key back and forth or have two sets of headphones. What I am saying is, if you want a great sat rig and an adequate HF rig, it is a fine choice. But if HF is your primary goal and satellite is an after thought, keep your 736 and get another HF rig. Prices run $800 to $1000 for a used 847. I paid $1000 for mine on a local purchase in very nice condition and sold the external speaker that came with it. Prices have dropped in the last year or so and I wouldn't pay more than $900 shipped unless it had the FC-20 external tuner with it. They can be found for $800, but consider the condition. These rigs are coming up on 20 years and many parts are reaching the point of becoming unobtainium. - Bottom line though... outside of a IC-910 or 9100, it's probably the best satellite rig you can own. (personally, I like the layout better than the 910/9100s) If I had the money, I'd buy a spare. Yaesu FT-847 as a satellite rig?

Hi folks, My HF transceiver, and ageing Yaesu FT767GX, is slowly dieing. After 22 years in my service (and a few more with the prior owners), the memory battery has failed. The rig still works, but gets a factory reset whenever turned off. Annoying. I have an opportunity to pick up a clean Kenwood TS-870-AT, which I expect would make for a fine replacement, but I've always thought that the Yaesu FT-847 would be a better choice. My current satellite rig is a Yaesu FT-736R, which I really like. As a satellite rig, is the 847 significantly better than the 736R? Does it have any annoying "personallity" traits (e.g. Kenwood TS-2000's 148.800 birdie)? Before I pass up the Kenwood 870 (and while there's a Yaseu 847 on eBay...), should I jump on one or the other, or muddle along with what I have until something better turns up? Thanks, Greg KO6TH

free sat ants and memory lane

I dismantled my satellite station at FM29PE in Ocean View NJ today. I worked one more AO07 pass to make my last contacts with my Oscar class station at FM29PE. I operated the sats continuously from this location since 1997. It was a great 17 years. I just went through my sat contacts. 16,386 contacts, 82 countries( I should of got up in the middle of the night more often for the rare DX that was on AO40, I'm sure I would of got sat DXCC), I'm not sure how many grids, but it's a lot J , made two way contacts on over 16 different satellites, and space to earth voice contacts on three different orbiting stations, not to mention all the wonderful time I had working all the PACSATS. Well one moves on, I plan on living in Florida near the beach in the winter and Ocean City NJ almost on the beach in the summer, locations that aren't compatible with large high gain antennas on any band. The final disposition of my sat antenna system was to give the large beams away to a good home, and keep some components to build a portable station with the Cushcraft AOP-1 antenna set that I purchased several years ago 'new in the box', that I kept squirreled away. I also saved the rotor, pre-amps, 2.4 gig stuff, a 1.2gig 70 watt amp, IC-9100,and some hardline to hook it up. So I will be back on the birds sort of serious in the near future. The station I'm going to put together will be portable enough to be taken down and moved in my Honda Pilot from NJ to FL while we snowbird it, without upsetting my wife too much J. I want to mention that the last three stations I worked from my FM29PE location today were.. F4EJW, it was good to work just one more DX station. KC9ELU, Good to work you again Mike, we will be back shortly. K3SZH, It was very fitting to work Joe, everyone's favorite AO07 op as the last contact, thanks Joe. We will be on some SO-50 passes, and of course I will keep the ISS digi up that is located at my other home we're keeping in NJ. How you wind it

How you wind a coil makes a BIG difference. Ever wonder why your projects don’t work like the authors? Im winding 42 turns onto a 1 Megohm 1/4W resistor to make a loading coil to make a 5’ whip antenna on a cubesat tune to 28 MHz. I was getting nowhere trying to add and subtract turns. With a bandwidth of only 200 kHz it was inconsistent getting to 28.120 center freq. Then I simply took the same length of wire and tried 3 methods all with the same number of turns. 1, down-and-back-and forward for 3 layers = 24.5 MHz 2, left-to-right but scrambled 3 layers along the way = 30.0 MHz 3, just a little squeezing of turns that had loosend = 28.8 MHz Wow, just changing the winding method moves the 0.2 MHz bandwidth as far as 30-to-1! The difference of course is the stray capacitance between the end turns. So winding method is important! Just thought I’d share the results… Bob, WB4APR

W1AW/3 from the District of Columbia - Final Statistics

Good evening, The W1AW/3 operation from the District of Columbia wrapped up just over an hour ago. On the satellites, 125 total QSOs were logged with 73 different stations. 55 grids, 30 states, and 6 DXCCs (United States, Mexico, Cuba, Brazil, England, and Ireland) were worked. Total by satellite: SO-50 - 54 FO-29 - 45 AO-73 - 17 AO-7 Mode B - 9 The 73 non-dupe QSOs represent the fifth highest total among W1AW portable operations active on the satellites thus far. I enjoyed the event immensely. In addition to my satellite operation, I operated several shifts on HF from W3DQ's station in northwest DC and got the opportunity to work some massive pileups. It was quite something to call CQ once or twice and have what seemed like half the world come back to you at once! While the District of Columbia does not count towards the W1AW WAS certificate, those who earn the certificate will receive an endorsement sticker noting that you have worked the District of Columbia. Good evening, Two more days left for W1AW/3 in Washington, DC. I currently have 74 QSOs with 51 stations in the log. W1AW/3 in DC Update

Good morning, I haven't been on as many passes as I'd like as I'm juggling other activities and shifts as an HF operator at one of the three stations we have on the air, but I've made 49 QSOs so far as W1AW/3 from the District of Columbia. If you are not in the log yet, I'll be on the 1445Z and 1621Z passes of AO-73 coming up today. I won't be on any evening passes tonight. I'm not 100% sure of passes tomorrow morning, but I do plan to work every pass on Monday and Tuesday after 2130Z, but before 0000Z. It is an article about "space junk". They point to Amateur Radio as one of the leaders in adding junk to the space above, indicating we ignore rules and others don't enforce the rules. If you don't enjoy talking on satellites, then yes, for you, it is spam. For others, I think it is something to be aware of and be prepared to address if in such a position. Not trying to cause harm to you or your computer. Just trying to help save my hobby and others livelihoods. You may ignore it... K8YSE Western Grid Expedition wrapup

Our western grid expedition has come to an end. We traveled 7300 miles from Cleveland to Mesa, Arizona, which is normally a 2000 mile trip. Operations took place on AO-7B, FO-29 and SO-50 in 27 different grids. We didn't plan to go all the way to the Pacific coast in Washington but circumstances changed so we altered the route. We camped as time and weather conditions permitted and we saw the beauty of the country we live in. I would say that 75% of the visitors we saw in our National Parks were foreign travelers. Weather conditions ranged from 32F to 90F. We had a whiteout snowstorm in Glacier National Park due to a polar vortex sweeping in. The road through the park was closed. We experienced rain, thunder, lightning, hail, wind and fog. A thunderstorm hit Bryce Canyon on our way out and water was pouring off the sheer cliffs onto the road; quite the sight. Except for one problem with a weak battery, every attempted pass was successful. It's very difficult to work in a large number of grids when we don't have that many birds operational. Hopefully that will change soon. A Journal article will be written about the trip. There are many ways to do this kind of expedition but it helps to hear about what works and what does not. A special QSL card will be designed for the trip. As mentioned in an earlier post, you can send individual cards or a log excerpt of all the contacts you made. Be sure to indicate which grid I was in for each contact. Cards will go out in December. Thanks to all that got on to work me. It makes it all worthwhile when there are a lot of callers who need the grid your operating from. And a special thanks to Frank, K4FEG, for posting updates on my operations. 73, John K8YSE/7

My apologies to all. I assumed folks would have the intelligence to see where the article came from by reading the link (a rather popular magazine at that). Also, my name, call sign, and phone numbers were very much present in the original posting. I've apologized once for "assuming" it would be obvious... AND admitting that Assumption was a very bad mistake on my part. Including the assumption that most folks know to open links in a 'sand box' for safety concerns if concerned. I forgot to mention I also have mast mount pre-amps for all bands included in the deal. I've had many requests to ship the antennas, or break out the rotor, etc. The antennas have been up for over 15 years and probably can't be dis-assembled. If I don't sell/donate the whole package I will keep the rotor, and be forced to scrap all the big Yagi's. I have room for a small antenna system I already have(a new in the box Cushcraft AOP-1 set) that I can use with the rotor and small tower at my urban home in NJ near Philadelphia. I sold my OceanView NJ property and now have to dismantle my satellite antenna system located there. I have available for free several antennas that would be of interest to a sat op. This would include a KLM 2M-22c, a KLM 435-40CX (both with a shack controlled polarity switching system) , a DS 1.2 gig 55 loop Yagi, and several dishes, 2.4 gig to 2m d/c, 2.4 gig pre amp, 2.4 gig RX ant, etc. All for free, OR, if you dismantle and pick the whole package up I will add a mini tower, Fiberglas cross boom and Yaesu G-5500 rotor with all cables for $375. OR I will donate the whole package for free to a University, all they would have to do is pickup. AMSAT has commissioned a unique challenge coin for donors who have contributed at the $100 level or higher. This challenge coin is shaped as an isometric view of a Fox-1 CubeSat, complete with details such as the stowed UHF antenna, solar cells, and camera lens viewport. Struck in 3mm thick brass, plated with antique silver, and finished in bright enamel, the coin is scaled to be approximately 1:4 scale, or 1 inch along each of the six sides. They will commemorate the launch of the Sputnik satellite on October 4, 1957 by attaching an active model replica of Sputnik to one of the balloons. The replica will transmit a Morse code message on 144.076 MHz. The ground stations will use HF on 3.650 MHz or 7.080 MHz or 20m 14.280 MHz between the ground control, chase cars, Secunda High School and Hartbeeshoek. The bands/frequencies may change due to propagation. If your hear the ground stations operate please keep the frequency clear for ground control operations. If you have any feedback in tracking the balloons specifically on descent please report it on the mentioned HF frequencies. I bounce back and forth from SatPC32 and HRD for the satellite tracking. If I want to just leave my station on 'auto pilot' on a certain bird or ISS, HRD does a great job in controlling the rig, but I still have to run SatPC32 to control the rotor(s). HRD won't control my Fox Delta controller, and SatPC32 won't run a rigs frequency smoothly at all for me and my 706mk2g. Anyway, still have no issues on it opening up. I do however have a crash just about every day on the HRD digital master only (all other parts continue to run just fine). This crash happens at least once a day and without warning naturally, so I try to use other programs for digital when I can.... Not Really worried about it too much yet, as I am still just listening to others talk (phone) to get a good idea of proper etiquette .... But learning that so many are way too quick on the trigger leaving little opportunity for others, as well as talking about the weather and other trivial stuff. Almost no chance for me to get on when I try as a result...... So much for etiquette! I would suggest just doing a clean reinstall of HRD. Remove the one you have now first. Sorry I don't have a better solution or answer. HRD Question

I am running the free version of HRD and of late have been experiencing a strange problem. The program runs but initializes extremely slowly. It takes at least 4 minutes to begin working. I am just using the satellite tracking portion of the software. The machine here runs Windows8.1 with all the updates. There isn't a virus or spyware problem according to my diagnostic software. Oh some one help me.. I have my kW ts2000 I can control it via computer, I have a rascal glx with 13 pin din I tested it with 2m on mix w hear the cw I am sending, The issue is this when I try to use hrd I get nothing at all no keying of the mic. I joined the ts2k yahoo GRP but the info they have is out dated. I would love to be able to do packet with the Iss again and hit the other birds with ssb n all. Any one able to assist me? CN73 last FO-29 pass

My 13:03 -13:19 FO-29 pass was much more enjoyably this morning. The wind had died down and the rain had stopped. There was an ocean mist but that didn't bother me any. I had the Suburban pointed into the direction of the mist and I operated from the back of the vehicle with the hatch open. I made all of my scheduled QSOs except Hector, CO6CBF. I didn't hear him at all. Here is the list of stations I worked this morning on FO-29: WB2SIH, N5JF, N5UXT, KB1RVT, KO4MA, AA5PK and WI9I. Thanks to everyone for all the fun from here in CN73sc. Thanks for the few replies. I did find a FunCube Pro+ for sale used which was fortuitous. I'll have fun first getting that running with some of the suggested software. As for KX3 control by SatPC32, I had started to work on that with the Erich and I got side tracked. I was almost convinced that it was going to work under the Kenwood emulation. I need to get back to that, however I don't yet have the 2 m module installed in my KX3. I hate to spend the $ on it before knowing if it can be computer controlled for satellite use. Maybe I'll let my friend try first ...hi hi! If I learn anything I'll report back here. 73 Rick W2JAZ

Yes, I have used the KX3 on satellite, both on FO29 and AO7. However, I have not use computer control of the KX3. I set up the FT-897D in the back of the Suburban this evening with the hatch open to shield me from the wind and rain. The only problem I had was trying to keep the wind from blowing over the tripod-mounted Arrow antenna. so with one hand on the tripod and the other on the microphone I was successful in working WA4HFN, W7LRV, KC7MG, WC7V, KE4KOL, KB0VXN, AJ9K and W0DHB from here in Bandon by the Sea, Oregon. I will try SO-50 with my hand held this evening, and I may give the morning pass of FO-29 another try, then we are heading out of here and making our way back home to Utah. This morning conditions have certainly deteriorated weather wise. The wind was blowing again, as it always does off the ocean, and it was raining. I was also tending one of our dogs that was on a leash tied to my leg, so not only did I have to fend off the rain and contend with the wind, but I had to keep untangling the leash from the table legs so the dog wouldn't tip everything over. And I received reports of RF feedback which didn't surprise me since everything is soggy here and I was probably a little low on battery voltage. LASA High School -- 1st Satellite Contact

9-23-2014 As the Trustee of K5LBJ, the LASA High School Amateur Radio Club, in Austin, Texas, last Friday (9/19) was an exciting day. After almost a year of hard work, the school's satellite tracking/communication station made "First Contact." As you are aware, satellites work on their own schedule, so when I noticed an SO-50 pass at the beginning of the school day, I hoped for the best. I was not disappointed. During the pass, I was able to work W5PFG, N8RO, NX9B, and WI9I. What a great moment in our club's 10th anniversary year! I can't wait to get students on the air over satellites. I teach an Amateur Radio elective class (where most of our building/maintenance is done), and last Spring, the students assembled and tested the satellite array. Unfortunately, we only obtained the Icom 910H during summer, so this was the first time to test it. Eureka! Many thanks to Mark Spencer, WA8SME, and the ARRL ETP ("Big Project") program that provided the computer interface for our EL/AZ rotator, and also the Dayton Amateur Radio Association (DARA) which funded coax and other items to make this project happen. Of course, we could not have made it happen without the support of the Austin Amateur Radio Club which funded the Icom 910H. Finally, I would like to express our appreciation for our mentor, Ron Parsons, W5RKN, who continues to guide and support our school in its satellite endeavors. N8RO Road Trip

Our road trip was completed last week. We traveled a total of about 4500 miles and were able to activate 14 grids. Radio problems kept us from operating as N8RO/MM on our cruise and we both both were sick after the cruise from some "bug" that we probably picked up on the boat. However, the trip was a sucess and very enjoyable. All contacts have been uploaded to LOTW using my call N8RO without any portable designation. I will send out all paper cards within the next few days to all that have requested them. I may request a few contacts to send a paper card to me because I am getting close to the 100 portable operations that I need for a reverse VUCC. KX3 For Sats

I figured that since there was such a good pass of SO-50 this morning I would try using my hand held and attempt some contacts, but the only station I heard was WA4NVM Rick, and I couldn't get his attention. Special Guest Presentation: Tuskegee Airman Col. Charles E. McGee The AMSAT symposium committee has confirmed that one of the original Tuskegee Airman, Col. Charles E. McGee, will be attending our conference on Friday October 10th. Col. McGee will give a special presentation at our symposium on his experiences as a Tuskegee Airman and as an Army Air Corps and Air Force Pilot. A short question and answer period will follow. Born on December 7, 1919, McGee rose to the rank of Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts and, shortly after WWII broke out, joined the Army. He became a pilot in what was dubbed the Tuskegee Experiment, the first squadron of African American pilots, also known as the “Red Tails” from their red markings on the tails of their aircraft. Col McGee and his Tuskegee colleagues fought two wars—World War II and the war on segregation. This required them to develop an unprecedented level of discipline, excellence and fortitude to achieve success. In World War II McGee flew numerous aircraft, including the famous P-51 Mustang as part of the 332 Fighter Group, one of three groups designated as the “Red Tails.” He provided fighter escort for the B-24 Liberator and B-17 Flying Fortress bombers over Germany, Austrian and the Balkans. He holds a US Air Force record of 409 fighter combat missions flown in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. Col. Es'hail 2 is a planned communication satellite operated by Es’hailSat, the Qatar Satellite Company. It will also feature an radio amateur payload. The new satellite will be positioned at the 26° East hotspot position for TV broadcasting and significantly adds to the company’s ability to provide high quality, premium DTH television content across the Middle East and North Africa. It will feature Ku-band and Ka-band transponders to provide TV distribution and government services to strategic stakeholders and commercial customers who value broadcasting and communications independence, interference resilience, quality of service and wide geographical coverage. Es’hail 2 is expected to be launched at the end of 2016. In September 2014, a contract with MELCO was signed to build the satellite based on the DS-2000 bus. Es'hail 2 will also provide the first Amateur Radio geostationary communication capability linking Brazil and India. It will carry two "Phase 4" Amateur Radio transponders. The payload will consist of a 250 kHz linear transponder intended for conventional analogue operations in addition to another transponder which will have an 8 MHz bandwidth. The latter transponder is intended for experimental digital modulation schemes and DVB amateur television. The uplinks will be in the 2.400-2.450 GHz and the downlinks in the 10.450-10.500 GHz amateur satellite service allocations. Both transponders will have broad beam antennas to provide full coverage over about third of the earth’s surface. On arrival at the ISS it will be put into storage until deployment, later in the Fall, from the airlock of the Japanese Experiment Module (JEM). Developed by the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) SpinSat is a 56 cm sphere weighing 57 kg that has 12 Electronically-controlled Solid Propellant (ESP) thrusters spread in pairs throughout the surface of the satellite. They will be fired in pairs to spin the spacecraft. With just primary batteries and only 4.8 grams of fuel this phase may last between three to six months. The spacecraft will be used to calibrate the space surveillance network. Lasers will be fired at SpinSat from the ground, the light reflected back will be measured to determine where in time and space the satellite is passing overhead. SpinSat will also model the density of the atmosphere. SpinSat carries a 2 watt RF output 9600 bps AX.25 packet radio store and forward system on 437.230 MHz. This is a high pass and should be visible over most of the Europe. During the locks release process and after reeling the tether out some centimeters, images will be taken. Try other baud rates (higher). But fair warning, SatPC32 is finicky with many rigs. I use a 706mk2g and I can turn on the cat control in the SatPC32 program, but it thinks for a few seconds, sends the data, and then it only updates the data once every 30-40 seconds. And I don't dare TX while the cat is turned on (will not work) . So, for normal operation, I just choose the bird I want to work, then activate the cat control long enough to update the rig. If I am using a bird that allows for multiple qso's, I'll activate the cat just to update the rig...... Sure you get the idea by now. I use the cat control for a starting point, but mostly manual after that. I've tried the 736r And 847 settings at 4800, no luck...I retread the help texts also. Satpc32 is working fine to tune my 910H 2M band for uplink. Hi, For the first time in at least 20 years I made a Mode A satellite contact. This one was AO-07 (thanks to K3SZH for the QSO). Brought back RS-10 / 12 / 15 memories for sure. Got to thinking, any experience to work Mode A with SATPC32 by: Tuning RX on Yaesu FT-1000D 10M band with SatPC32 ? I want to configure SatPC32 to tune my FT-1000D on 10m for RX I have other programs tuning the FT-1000 nicely so I know the CAT interface is working. I've tried the 736r And 847 settings at 4800, no luck...I retread the help texts also. Satpc32 is working fine to tune my 910H 2M band for uplink. Update TLE

Hello all; Satellite TLEs are very important and needs to be updated regularly. We all generally download and update the TLEs from celestrak or other websites. But how is the task of updating TLE of satellites carried out? Does the satellite owner/ team have to update them or the organisations like celestrak take care of it? -- Regards, Rupesh Lad

IARU Region 1 have released edition 6.14 of the free VHF Managers Handbook covering the VHF, UHF and Microwave amateur radio bands. The handbook has chapters on Band Planning, Contests, Propagation Research, Operating Procedures and Satellites. It even specifies a standard for the use of circular polarization defining which way helical beam antennas should be threaded.
