Digitalker on ARTSAT1:INVADER worked

Hello everyone, I watched the downlink of ARTSAT1:INVADER yesterday, and I heard the voice and CW on FM mode from the satellite! ARTSAT1:INVADER carrys "Morikawa", a compatible board of 'Arduino', and the Digitalker was worked by sending command to "Morikawa". This means Arduino (compatible) board worked in the space. Morikawa cannot be reprogrammed itself but has a Virtual Machine, so it may work by the binary code sent from the earth. I wish it will work well. ji1izr/Masahiro

Object IDs

It seems that the JSpOC has changed some of their policies lately. After the launch of multiple small satellites late last year it took a long time to get them all identified. Apparently they don't want to leave all the TBAs in their database for a long time, so now they use a different approach: they randomly assign the names of all satellites of a launch to the observed objects and then wait for reactions from the users of the satellites to see if the assignments are correct. This is how e.g. the Cubesats, that recently were launched from the ISS, got 'identified' only a few days after their launch. So of course now we find that some identifications are wrong. Doppler measurements clearly show that the following IDs are correct: Object 39568, 1998-067EM, is LitSat 1 Object 39569, 1998-067EN, is LituanicaSat 1. I am trying to get these corrected. In the past the policy was to assign the 'A' object to the main payload of a launch. Secundary payloads, like Cubesats, would then get 'B', 'C', etc. So if the main payload initially was linked to the wrong TLE set, this required some swapping of TLE sets some time after the launch. Now they have decided to prevent this confusion by simply leaving the main payload assigned to another object than 'A' if required. Therefore the GPM satellite now is assigned to 2014-009C and this will not change anymore. Regards, Nico

Dear OM's and YL's: Being of Lithuanian descent, I really want to be able to access LituanicaSAT-1. This afternoon, at about 21:50UTC, I tried listening for it, both on the transponder frequency, and on the CW beacon frequency, and heard nothing. Faking a software TNC as hardware

I am trying to use an application that expects a hardware TNC on traditional serial port. At this point in time I don't have a hardware TNC connected to my satellite station. I do have a traditional multimode TNC I could utilize but I prefer not. I am looking for a way, if possible, to configure a soft TNC application to pretend it is a traditional serial TNC. Essentially, the soft TNC would respond as a COMx,8N1 TNC just as if it were hardware. Is there a way to do this? 73 Clayton W5PFG

Used up until recently primarily for satellite uplink in combination with Flex5000A using downconverters for 2m/70cm. Also used on HF occasionally. Works great. The University of Louisiana sat team is trying to check the performance of its VHF and UHF antenna. Here is the data we would like to know. The receive signal strength of the beacon on the V and U sat and the idle noise when the antenna is pointed to cold sky. I am not sure we are talking about the same bird Trevor. Is LituanicaSat-1 the same as LitSat-1. I thought they were 2 different satellites? I was asking about the one built by the Kaunas University of Technology "LituanicaSat-1". This bird is the one that has the FM transponder, FM CW beacon and AX.25 FM Packet radio as well. I see Mike DK3WN reporting briefly on the 2nd March reception of telemetry http://www.dk3wn.info/p/?p=42452 There hasn't been much more in the press on the satellite. Hi all, Thanks for the signal reports for today's contact with Central Square Middle School. Here is what I do know at the moment: The contact scheduled for 14:05 UTC only had about 3 questions get answered and the contact was cut short. A second attempt was then made at 15:40 UTC and it is my understanding that it failed. Sorry I was not able to get the word out for the second attempt but as I was just about to do that I had a work related call that took precedent and lasted for about 45 minutes. It is my understanding that many of you heard the ISS quite loudly, so that is good to know for us as we determine what happened. The team ask radio amateurs and SWL’s to listen for the FM Morse code beacon on 437.275 MHz after deployment and submit reports (see Tracking below). They say there will be Mission emblem stickers with signed QSL cards and for the first 10 registered reports, LituanicaSAT-1 branded note books! The tiny satellite is just 10x10x10 cm with a mass of 1.090 kg yet it has a VGA camera and a 145/435 MHz FM voice transponder, designed and built by Lithuanian radio amateurs. The prototype of the FM repeater has been operating in the home of its designer Žilvinas Batisa LY3H in Elektrenai, Lithuania. Following attitude sensors are implemented for attitude determination: • PS-MPU-6000A MEMS motion sensor • PS-MPU-9150A MEMS motion sensor • L3GD20 MEMS three-axis digital output gyroscope • HMC5883L three axes digital magnetometer There are two computers in LituanicaSAT-1: the flight computer based on ARM Cortex-M4F microcontroller and secondary (back-up) computer based on Arduino ATMega 2560 microcontroller. These two computers and their periphery are laid out on different sides of one shared PCB. The flight computer is the central control unit of the satellite responsible for maintaining the normal operating mode of the satellite, monitoring and control of energy resources, control of attitude determination sub-system and performance of telecommands received from the satellite ground station in Lithuania. The LituanicaSAT-1 team developed the secondary flight computer based on the open source hardware and software project named Arduino. This computer will ensure limited, however safe functionality of the satellite in case of failure of the main onboard computer and will also take and record the first pictures made by Lithuanians from space as well as control the radio beacon of the satellite. There are 4 monopole antennas on LituanicaSAT-1: three UHF antennas and one VHF antenna. Each antenna is made of approx. 0.2 mm thick and 5 mm wide spring steel measurement tape. In deployed configuration, all UHF antennas are pointed towards the Z+ body axis direction and VHF antenna is pointed toward –Z body axis. Therefore the satellite bears the name of the original aircraft used during this historic flight – “Lituanica”. On July 15, 1933, Steponas Darius and Stasys Girenas took off from Floyd Bennett Field in New York in their airplane Lituanica and flew across the Atlantic Ocean, covering a distance of 6,411 kilometers without landing, in 37 hours and 11 minutes. Tragically they crashed by the village of Kuhdamm, near Soldin, Germany just 650 km from their destination of Kaunas in Lithuania. Inverted-V turnstile idea

I had an idea pop in my head for a simple turnstile antenna, and am not finding much info on what I want to do via Google searches I wanted to bounce this off the list and see what people think. My idea consists of three main points: -Antenna elements being conventional (non-folded) inverted V dipoles, tuning the length for resonance and angle to set at 50 ohms each -1/4 wave 50 ohm phasing line between the sets of dipoles -Feed via DK7ZB match using a 1/4 wave paralleled 2x75 ohm line section (37 ohms), transforming the 25 ohms back up to right around 50 ohms for final feed This approach would give the following advantages: -Lower SWR than standard 75-ohm parallel turnstiles -Dipoles could be individually tuned via direct 50 ohm feed during construction -DK7ZB match is constructed out of inexpensive 75-ohm coax -Phasing line length would only affect phase, instead of phase and impedance. My main question, though is: With dipole elements canted down roughly 35 degrees from vertical (what I'm ballparking to get them down to 50 ohms), am I going to see noticeably degraded performance, especially regarding the polarization? I’m just starting to build one of the WRSPS systems, currently waiting for 2 small items to arrive. Be aware that the micro-controller board requires SMD soldering. If you plan to build it using the BOM parts from the specified suppliers it will coast a little over $200 not including antennas, preamp/s, etc. I’m doing it for the education and anticipate, at some point after completion, modifying some of the mechanism for remote operation and weatherproofed operation. The DVD that comes with the board contains all the construction info and add’l pictures over and above the ones you will see on the ‘in-depth’ website. A simple receive station for the kicksat Sprites

My contribution to the Sprite project is now hosted at : http://kicksat.wordpress.com/support/kicksat-ground-station/ although I still need to amend the typo that sets the frequency at 437.4 when it should be 437.240. Thanks to MJ for setting this up for me now that my personal website hosted by Google is full (I need to talk to them about that!). In the page I have tried to set out a simple and modest station (my own!) which should be in the reach of a target school science teacher or similar. This station received the 100mW transmitter of $50sat at a distance of 640km as shown on the waterfall display. Thanks to the team of $50sat for their inspirational project. This waterfall display and SDR receiver is needed for the bandwidth of the Sprite transmisison, and the aim is to record the entire pass for the project's database. From an operator's point of view, the most important thing to notice is that no dongle is accurately calibrated and so you should not necessarily believe that the frequency you set in software is the frequency you actually get! I hope this page will encourage people to try for the interception of the Sprirtes when they are launched shortly. 73 de andy g0SFJ

Vienna Wireless Winterfest - Demonstration Report

Good afternoon, The demonstrations at the Vienna Wireless Winterfest were quite a success. We made two QSOs on the 1230Z pass of VO-52 and an outstanding 11 QSOs on the 1347Z pass of FO-29. Thanks to AC0RA and KD8LMI operating as W1AW/8 for the QSOs on the VO-52 pass. Thanks to AC0RA, W5PFG, AA5PK, W3KXR, K4FEG, WC7V, WD9EWK, CO6CBF, KD8LMI operating as W1AW/8, N5ZNL, and W7JPI for the QSOs on the FO-29 pass. I was using my normal portable satellite station of a Yaesu FT-817 (with blown finals - don't need them to receive!). a Yaesu FT-817ND, High Sierra Microwave preamps (LNAA146FIL for 2m, LNAA432 for 70cm), and an Elk antenna for the demonstrations. There were probably about a dozen people in and out observing the demonstrations, plus others watching from a distance. Following the demonstration, Steve, KS1G, presented a great introduction to AMSAT and satellite operating in a classroom forum with about 20 hams in attendance. After the forum, we went back outside to capture some telemetry from FUNcube-1 as it passed over at about 1530Z and captured 25 frames with Steve's FUNcube Dongle, Elk antenna, and a Dell Venue 8 Pro tablet. Only 25 frames were captured because it was the first time I had used the FUNcube Dongle and the Dashboard is not quite designed for touchscreen input! We were able to show the realtime and whole orbit data collected and read several fitter messages. Thanks to the Vienna Wireless Society for giving us the opportunity to both demonstrate amateur satellite operation and make a presentation. Also, thanks to two VWS Directors, John, KJ4YHC, and Ian, N0IMB, for filming the demonstrations and interviewing me about my portable satellite station. I will share the interview video with the BB when they post it. We would like to thank NASA for the ISS fly-over at 7:02PM PST - allowing us to open the net, then walk outside for a magnificent, 45+ degree pass of the ISS. Those listening this evening learned about this week's tentative commercial and amateur satellite deployments ... we discussed the modes and frequencies for the four new ham satellites that astronaut Koichi Wakata KC5ZTA will be deploying ... and about the Web sites for live video of CubeSat deployments and further information. And all were also invited to attend the Palm Springs Desert RATS / Palm Springs DX Club HamFest that is happening Saturday, March 15, 2014. These clubs have a history of organizing incredible one-day hamfests - including ham radio history, licensing, major vendors, inexpensive coffee (most important to hams), and demonstrations. And FREE parking (quite extraordinary in Palm Springs for such an event!) We conduct this satellite session every Tuesday night at 7PM Pacific time. The Big Bear Amateur Radio Club club was established in 1975, and this "Tech Tuesday Net" is right in alignment with their stated mission to educate and stimulate interest in amateur radio. The BBARC is an affiliated club member of the American Radio Relay League, and its prestigious, high-level two meter repeater on 147.330 +.600 131.8 is heard from Mexico to Ventura, and from Catalina Island to Western Arizona. The $50sat team is celebrating 90 days in orbit by proposing a technical challenge to all interested amateurs. $50sat is capable of responding to uplink command packets: There are 3 open packets: Test packet - $50SAT responds by sending the RSSI of the received packet in slow FM Morse. Request data packet - the normal data packet is sent. Request RTTY - The RTTY is sent. In addition all received packets result in two copies of the ack packet being sent, that contains the RSSI of the received packet. All the required information to accomplish this is available on the drop box location available through the $50sat web page at www.50dollarsat.info . Anyone that can demonstrate a successful command uplink by submitting a recording of the response packet along with the date, time and location of of the contact will receive aCertificate of Technical Accomplishment signed by all three builders of $50sat. Submissions can be madeto the $50sat email address; 50dollarsat at yahoo.com. This is a significant challenge because there is no magic black box that you can buy to do this. After 90 days of operation, the Kodak KLIC-7002 camera battery that powers the satellite has fallen off about 100mV, but operations still seem normal. We have also programmed a special 5th morse beacon to thank our launch sponsor and mentor prof. Bob Twiggs. Please give a listen for the message TNX KE6QMD on the FM Morse beacon. DoD release Electromagnetic Spectrum Strategy

On Thursday, February 20, the Department of Defense (DoD) announced the release of its Electromagnetic Spectrum Strategy (EMS) to increase available spectrum in order to meet growing demand from the commercial wireless industry. The strategy follows the release of a memorandum issued in 2010 by President Obama titled “Unleashing the Wireless Broadband Revolution,” which requires 500 MHz of spectrum be made available for commercial use by 2020. Amateur UHF and Microwave spectrum is shared with DoD. The release of 500 MHz may result in more intensive use by the DoD of the remaining spectrum. #22 likes it. I think it'd be neat to compare the rankings to latitude as well. My station has run almost full time collecting telemetry since launch, and I continue to slide down the list. I'm not upset or even bothered by it, but it illustrates how much more access time a high latitude station gets on a polar orbit as compared to say, a 28.3 degree latitude location. Competition has probably doubled the participation in this endeavor, which only helps the project. Plus, if it doesn't hurt anyone, why even care? Cubesat 1 axis attitude control?

Need an AMSAT greybeard with attitude control experience. We want to use only one magnetorguer coil (a Z coil) to more or less keep our Z axis aligned with the Earth's axis (+/-30 deg) We figure if we energize the Z coil only twice per orbit while over the equator where the Earth's magnetic field is aligned with the poles we can eventually bring it into alignment. Then we maintain that alignment using white/black differential solar radiation pressure to maintain a fractional RPM about the Z axis. I need help from some greybeards to prove this is possible. Funcube Dashboard Dying

Hi, I have a computer which I am currently dedicating to getting AO-73 data via a FunCube dongle. I leave the dashboard running all the time and when the AO-73 comes over the horizon, it grabs the data. But something odd has been going on from the start. After multiple days of running, the dashboard apparently crashes. At least when I check in on it, the dashboard is no longer running and I have to restart it. Has anyone else had this experience? If any dashboard developers are listening, is there any data that I can collect to help figure this out? Thanks and 73, Burns, W2BFJ
