The National Scouting Museum in Irving Texas will again be making Satellite contacts as we can on Saturday, October 20 the for Scouting's Jamboree on the Air as K2BSA/5 Passes however will be limited if AO-27 is still out of commission. Will try FO-29 and AO-7 if in B mode. SO-50 will be too late in the day for us. Hoping that by next year we have FOX up as well as FunCube and UKCube for linear transponder options. On May-19 authorized high altitude Balloon was launched from La Pampa, Argentina, reaching 34.000 m, carring UHF to VHF (4w) subtone activated repeater, APRS lu7aa-11, Robot-36 live SSTV, CW, 40/20m CW tlm beacon and 2 video cameras. Yavapai Amateur Radio Club Hamfest on Saturday (20 October)

This will be the Yavapai Amateur Radio Club's hamfest in Dewey, Arizona - north of the Phoenix area. Besides HF, I hope to be able include some satellite contacts this weekend for the Boy Scouts Jamboree on the Air (JOTA). I would love to hear from others who will attempt some satellite contacts for JOTA. I am just beginning to figure out what passes and satellites will work on Saturday, October 20. I will be operating from Galveston State Park in Galveston, TX. Also, does anyone have info on when the ISS will be in contact with the Boy Scouts in Irving, TX this weekend? I understand they have a schedule set up and perhaps we can give a listen. Perhaps on the next pass or so, they will consider a contact with others. 73, -james W5AOO

The ARISS schedule is updated quite often. I do post an announcement to the SAREX BB of the updated schedule. CO6CBF to Symposium - update (16 October)

Hi! Since I first posted about Hector CO6CBF coming to the AMSAT Symposium in Orlando next week, I have received lots of e-mails showing appreciation for this effort. Thanks to everyone for their support! I wanted to mention that I have already received some checks at my mailbox today, in response to the request I made for donations to help with the expenses related to Hector's trip. I won't list names and calls, but here is what arrived so far: $200 check from Texas $ 25 check from Arkansas $ 20 check from Alabama Along with a $50 check I received from Tennessee some time ago before I went public with this effort on the -BB, this means I have already received $295 toward Hector's trip. Since I have not had time to scribble a web page related to this, I will post updates here on the -BB and my Twitter feed updates related to Hector's trip. I do not intend on making public a list of names and calls of those who have contributed, as a few have asked for anonymity - which I will respect. All contributions are appreciated, no matter how big or small. A couple of hams have asked me if I would accept contributions in person at the Symposium next week. This would be OK with me. In person, cash would also be acceptable. You could send me cash through the mail, but all standard disclaimers regarding cash sent through the mail apply. Hector sent an e-mail out this morning to me and a few others. He is back in his home city Cienfuegos, after a quick trip to Havana so he could pick up his passport with its newly-issued US visa at the US "embassy" (formally called the US Interests Section, which operates as a branch of the Swiss embassy in Havana due to the lack of diplomatic relations between the USA and Cuba) yesterday morning. Hector delivered his passport to a Cuban immigration office in Cienfuegos today, so his Cuban travel permit can also be put into his passport. He should be able to pick that up tomorrow, and then he has all the government-issued documentation needed to make the trip - and I can purchase his air ticket for the flights between Havana and Miami. That's all for now. Things are falling into place, with not much time remaining until the Symposium. RS-15 Beacon Heard Above Rochester, NY

Hello All, I happened to be in the clubroom at K2GXT, The RIT Amateur Radio Club, and check out the RS-15 beacon on 29.3525 MHz during a 25 degree elevation pass over Rochester, NY this morning at 11:14 AM. I made a recording with a TS-2000 and an 80M Off-Center-Fed-Dipole we normally use for HF operations tuned to 10 Meters. 29.351 Mhz odd signal

Dear friends, I've been monitoring for the past two weeks a chirping sound on 29.351 Mhz that has me baffled. Since I believe it is inside the sat sub-band, I wonder if there is an old bird that's still up in the air that sends some kind of telemetry signal around this frequency. The signal in question consists series of chirps or beeps, even spaced and at about a rate of two per second. It drifts very slowly at times and the chirps become longer as it moves down the range. It usually starts around 29352.5 and ends near 29350. 0. However there are times when the signal is steady and doesn't move. As I write this, the signal just disappeared around 12:32 UTC at my location, at grid IN51. The only sat that would be the likely suspect could be RS-15 but I've had times that I could hear the signal when i'snt up in my sky. I've checked the AMSAT frequency charts and RS-15 has a CW Beacon downlink on 29.3525Mhz listed as "semi-operational". This frequency range is also within SEDsat's OSCAR-33 transponder downlink but is listed as non-operational. Then killed it to change to STRTOS-11 which would be more recognizable as a balloon. Then made some bad entries with the PC clock being off, then had the time zone off. Then accidentallly entered two posits with a capital Z instead of "z" and APRS.FI ignored those. Finally got it all OK. Entered another object JUMPD using the HUMAN symbol when he jumped and gave it a CSE of 180 and 729 MPH. But when he got to the ground, I changed the velocity of both to 0 so they would stay put on the map.. Remember, APRS was made to track ANYTHING and distribute that info to everyone. Does not need GPS. It just takes someone to enter the object. Bob, WB4APR

Hi! The AMSAT Symposium in Orlando is two weeks away. If you need another reason to attend besides all the activities that are being planned around the event, here is something to consider. Hector Martinez CO6CBF, an active satellite ham and the first Cuban ham to obtain the ARRL's satellite VUCC award, will be at the Symposium. Hector will give a presentation during the Symposium, and is looking forward to meeting those he has worked on the satellites. I wanted to say more about this earlier, but the process for Hector to get the proper documents from the US and Cuban governments to make the trip has not been easy. This has been in the works for at least six months, with no guarantee that Hector would receive all the necessary paperwork in time to attend the Symposium. Lots of people in the US and in Cuba have been working hard to lay the groundwork for this trip to happen. A big thank-you goes to AMSAT, for extending a formal invitation to Hector to attend and give a presentation. This invitation was the starting block for Hector to approach both governments and file applications to get the required paperwork for this trip - a Cuban passport and travel permit, along with a US visa. I will compile a list of those who have assisted in this effort and post that later. In order for Hector to make this trip, all expenses for his trip must be guaranteed by someone outside Cuba. I have taken on that task personally on behalf of AMSAT, even signing legally-binding documents for the Cuban government to that end. With that said, if anyone would like to help me with the expenses for this trip, please contact me directly. AMSAT is not picking up the expenses related to Hector's trip, and won't be involved in collecting funds. I am not going to have a nice PayPal widget, but will go "old school" for that - send me a check or money order to my PO box in Arizona. I will keep track of any contributions toward Hector's trip, and list them on a web page which I will set up this weekend. I know Hector has been looking forward to making this trip. Hector called me this morning after he received the call that his passport with US visa were ready to be picked up in Havana. It was easy to hear the happiness and excitement in his voice, despite the rough telephone connection. Can I use the radio to communicate with any satellites that support VHF? And please direct me to the resource that I need to start building my first small station. Thank you in advance. Hello, Visiting the AO-27 website i see the following "Current AO-27 Status: Primary Bootloader", also i read about N3UC asking to don't transmit if the analogue mode is not heard. Can someone help me with a little bit info? Has been it working in analogue mode recently? I wan't to give it a try today, and also durind the next weekend, but i guess asking first will be better to avoid interference. PACIFICON/ARRL National Convention W1AW/6 Satellite Demos this weekend

Greetings from CM97, PACIFICON/ARRL National Convention is coming this weekend to Santa Clara, CA. Friday October 12 to Sunday October 14. I will be presenting satellite demos at the convention and will be able to use the W1AW/6 callsign. I was planning on AO-27 for almost half of the passes but it's not looking very favorable at this point. Thus, it looks like all the passes may be on the linear birds FO-29 and AO-07. I will be helping with registration duties with our radio club, the Mount Diablo Amateur Radio Club, who is the sponsor of PACIFICON. I will be working each morning till noon. With the MDARC meeting Friday night and the banquet on Saturday night, this leaves only the afternoons for sat demos. Looking over the pass predictions, including AO-27, it looks like there are 10 good passes for demos. Without AO-27 it looks like we're down to 6 good demo passes. An ARISS Contact with the ISS via telebridge to Italy will be held on 13 OCT at 11:57am Pacific time, thanks to Joe Spier, K6WAO (Associate Director of Education for AMSAT). Youth attending the event will be asking questions to Aki Hoshide aboard the ISS. NASA astronaut Dr. Lee Morin, KF5DBB, will be present as well, thanks to ARRL! CubeSats TLE

Hello dear CubeSats listener ! The TLE of the five CubeSats recently launched from ISS are now available with the NORAD registration numbers 1998-067-CN, CP, CQ, CR, CS. 1998 ? Yes as NORAD considers they are parts of the ISS, the first module of which, Zarya, was launched on November 20th 1998 and got the NORAD registration number 1998-067-A. Yesterday evening (evening in Western Europe, around 2130 UTC), I noticed that FITSAT-1 was already about 4 mn before the ISS predictions as this one modified altitude (higher). AO-27 possible failure

AO-27 sent data after the repeater mode expired on the 1835utc pass, 5 October. 50 seconds into the data, the "mark/space" toggling stopped and a "mark" only tone was heard. That tone was heard for 4-1/2 minutes until the signal was lost when the bird went over the horizon. A recording of the entire pass is on my website: http://www.papays.com/sat/general.html AO-27 was not heard in EN91 on the scheduled 2015utc pass. I think my receiver is working fine but maybe it wasn't. Let's hope it can be recovered. An email was sent to N3UC and a message was left on his home phone. Hello Fellow satellite users; Is anyone operating AO7-a? A few of us "diehard" satellite users are working AO7-A, the satellite is generally pretty empty, normally I am just listening to my own signal on the down-link. Mode A works just as well as Mode B does, you can use your HF beam as a receiving antenna if need be to copy the down-link. From EM55aj I have worked 2E1EUB in the U.K., I have worked Hector, CO6CBF, in Cuba and I have worked HK3MKE in Columbia, the satellite works fine there are just not many stations there. If anyone wants to give AO7-A a try drop me an email, I am retired and have the time to operate and I don't mind the early morning or late in the evening passes, I have a SKYPE account that I can be reached on as well: K4FEG_EM55. We are running out of options here on the satellites and I am not an SWL so I don't plan on sitting around just waiting for a satellite miracle, If it's up there and it will receive my transmissions, I am going to try and operate that satellite! The school participates in the Partner School Science Program, which is a program under Global Friendship Through Space Education, a Cali- fornia-based non-profit organization that promotes friendship among young people from different countries and cultures through the study of space-related science and technology. Students communicate about space-related projects via e-mail, collaborate on research on NASA's distance-learning Web site, and videoconference between NASA and part- ner schools. First Lego League Robotic Teams and Destination Imagina- tion Teams have been a part of school activities annually since 2005. Invitations to attend this event have been extended to several VIPs including the minister of transportation, the president of the board of education, the director of education, the mayor of Izmir and the governor of Izmir. Maryland -------- An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact was held between students at the Waxter Young Women's Academy in Laurel, Maryland and Akihiko Hoshide, KE5DNI aboard the ISS on Sept- ember 24. Telebridge station LU8YY in Argentina handled the radio connection. The girls were able to have all 13 of their questions answered with enough time left to thank Hoshide for participating. Phone lines throughout the center were made available so that other students could listen in as well. The ARISS contact was part of a comprehensive education plan used to interest students in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). Nova Scotia ----------- On September 26, Sacred Heart School of Halifax in Nova Scotia, Canada participated in an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact with on-orbit astronaut Sunita Williams, KD5PLB. Telebridge station LU8YY in Argentina connected with Will- iams, but the international phone line, which was to connect Argen- tina to Halifax, went down and could not be brought up until after the ISS had passed overhead. Williams agreed to try the contact again on the next pass. Ninety minutes later, the audience of 250 got what they had been waiting for - a successful contact! The students got in 17 questions, and one student was wished a Happy Birthday by the ISS commander. The data transponder also includes all telemetry, command and control for a complete cubesat. PSAT is a 1.5 unit cubesat so that two PSATs can be launched from the same P-Pod launcher. The design uses four deployable solar ar- rays which are stowed down the sides. Half of the 1.5 unit PSAT is available for auxiliary payloads or experiments. With an FM downlink, anyone can receive it with an HT and a laptop with PSK-31 software. And anyone with a 10m PSK-31 uplink can transmit to it. And since the downlink is FM, everyone tuned in SEES THE SAME WATERFALL and sees EXACTLY where they are in the downlink. A small uplink doppler adjustment can keep each station locked to his chosen channel in the passband. Everyone can talk to everyone if they want, or go one-on-one too." The SSB uplink and UHF FM downlink transponder fits on a smaller than 3"x3" circuit board being developed by Mirek Kasal at Brno University. Launch of PSAT is planned in 2015. The 3"x3" transponder may also be adaptable for other missions. CM2ESP is the Net Control Station. The net will be on the air every Friday from 19:00 to 20:00 local time in Havana. I too can report nothing heard from fm 29, though there did seem to be an own carrier for several minutes at one point and then it sounded like they were uploading data. The website indicates that it did fail and attempts were being made to upload data and restart. Lets's hope as there aren't many left. W2JAZ RICK

Space photography - 50 years later

This week is the 50th anniversary of the launch of Mercury Sigma 7 capsule with astronaut Wally Schirra on October 3, 1962. http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/mercury/missions/sigma7.html Sigma 7 featured the first Hasselblad camera and photography from earth orbit. IC-910H Transceiver Question

For many years I have used this Transceiver intermittently as a receiver in a protected location, so I never got around to grounding it. Now I am not in a protected location and want to transmit, so the Transceiver must be grounded. I check the manual on page 14. Yes, there is an empty, threaded location on the back panel for the ground connection, but it does not say what thread the connection has. Now this normally would not be a big deal, as I would go to my bucket of nuts and bolts and get a few bolts and find which one had the correct thread. Unfortunately, I am not near my normal location and the junk box so I look more carefully at the manual for the thread size and do not find the information. If someone reading this knows the thread size I would appreciate it if you would let me know, so I can go get one, maybe two so I will have a spare, and then mark up my manual. . Hi, I had a very low elevation pass here in Wales (UK ) at around 2130 hrs GMT - Despite a few obstructions was also successful in hearing FItsat-1 and another of the satellites beacons higher up in frequency. I was only using my ELK antenna and tracking using the ISS keps so they are operating quite well. Perhaps the FCC and Cosmogia, Inc. have reconciled the objections to the use of 145.825 MHz for one of their telemetry down links. The President of Euroluna, Palle Haastrup OZ1HIA, provides a video update on the progress of the Euroluna Google Lunar X-Prize team who are aiming to land a rover on the Moon. Their first amateur radio spacecraft Romit-1 is a 2U CubeSat that will transmit on 437.505 MHz. It will be fitted with an Ion Motor capable of raising the orbit from 310 km to 700 km. SatPC32 & Flex5000A

Ive started experimenting with converters and/or transverters on my Flex5KA, using it as my receiver and an FT-847 as the uplink. I use SatPC32 to control both radios. I've got the Flex setup as rdaio 1 using the Kenwood TS-2000 configuration and radio 2 is set to the FT-847. It seemed to work for a short time. but I made some changes to the CAT Delay and the status of the RTS +12 check box and now things are getting strange. When I start SatPC32 the Flex is suddenly set to 65 mhz. Anyone have any suggestions particularly about the CAT Delay setting and RTS +12 status? TNX 73 de W2JAZ Rick

In addition to the orbital variations, there are at least two other considerations: the altitude of the stations and the elevation angle of their horizons (whether they can work down to zero degrees elevation angle or even lower). There are many variations on this, but let's look at a simple case where the stations are each at zero altitude (relative to the earth's radius) and both can work down to exactly zero degrees elevation angle. At any given moment, the in-view area of a satellite will be almost exactly a circle drawn on the earth's surface. (If the earth were perfectly round, it WOULD be a circle, but variations in surface altitude create minor distortions. So let's assume the earth is perfectly round, at least within the in-view region.) The maximum distance question you ask becomes "what is the diameter of this circle?" The diameter of the circle (call it D) is a function of both the altitude of the satellite (call it A) and the radius of the earth (call it R). For two points on the diameter of the circle (and the satellite directly above the center of the circle), this three-dimensional question degenerates into a two-dimensional problem. [Okay, here I'm going to describe a geometry problem and use trigonometry to solve it. After all, Bob asked "how did you figure it out?" and this is the way I solve these problems at work. If you want to skip the derivation and get to the answer, jump past the end of the brackets. This would be easier if I could draw a picture, but I'll try to explain in words. Also, see the PPS below. For the case where the ground station elevation angle is zero, the 2D view becomes two right triangles. For each triangle, the vertices are at the satellite, the center of the earth, and the ground station. The zero degree elevation angle results in the right angle being at the ground station. So the two legs of the right triangle are the slant range to the satellite and the radius of the earth. The hypotenuse is the radius of the satellite's orbit, equal to its altitude plus the radius of the earth. The two triangles are positioned hypotenuse to hypotenuse. What we need to determine from each triangle is the included angle between the hypotenuse and the leg that goes from the earth center to the ground station. Trig tells us this angle (call it B) is represented by the following equation: B = Arccos( (earth radius) / (satellite radius) ) Substitute R for earth radius and A for satellite altitude, and this equation becomes B = Arccos ( R / (R + A) ) Once we have this angle, we double it to determine the earth-center angle between the two ground stations. Divide this angle by 360 degrees to determine what fraction of a circle this represents, then multiply that fraction by the circumference of a perfectly circular/spherical earth to determine the distance between the two points along the surface of that perfectly spherical earth. Thus the distance between the two points (call that D) is represented by the following equation: D = (2 * B / 360) * (2 * pi * R) Replace B with the equation above to get: D = (2 * Arccos( R / (R + A) ) / 360) * 2 * pi * R which simplifies to: ] <<<<<----- End of derivation!!!! D = (pi * R / 90) * Arccos( R / (R + A) ) I put this equation in an Excel spreadsheet, so let's plug some numbers in. AO-7 is listed on the AMSAT web page with an apogee of 1459 km and a perigee of 1440. Wikipedia says the earth's radius varies between 6353 km and 6384 km, but most models come up with a mean radius of 6371. So plugging in R = 6371 and A = 1459 results in a D of 7904.7 km. At perigee (A = 1440), this drops to 7861.2. In reality, you have to subtract a little bit from these distances; since the satellite is moving, you need to be able to complete a QSO while both stations are in coverage, so it's not quite as wide as the full diameter of the coverage circle. But as I said earlier, there are additional variations. Propagation might let your signal work below your actual horizon. The distance from your station to the center of the earth may/will vary from the average of 6371 km. The big kicker is if your antenna is at the top of a mountain so you can see below zero degrees elevation angle; then the earth-center angle widens and the distance increases. But the geometry becomes more complex. And the trick is to find mountains of just the right height, just the right distance apart, with a satellite at apogee exactly between them. [More geometry: I typically solve this by adding more right triangles to make the trig easy. For example, you define a grazing point where the signal "hits" the surface of the perfectly spherical earth. Then you have one right triangle from the ground station to the grazing point, and a second from the grazing point to the satellite. I'm sure there's a way to do this with non-right triangles, but the trig is easier for me to remember this way.] Steve Melachrinos W3HF P.S. Nothing in this derivation is satellite-specific, so it works for anything with similar geometry. Plug in AO-27's altitude to see its max range (6076.2 km, subject to the same limitations and assumptions). Or geostationary altitude. Or the height of your repeater's tower to determine its coverage area. Or put in the nominal six-foot height of a human to show that the distance to the visible horizon is about 3 miles. P.P.S. So I just Googled "human visible horizon" to verify my recollection that the visible horizon for a six-foot-tall person is about 3 miles away. And I came upon a web page, linked below, that does a similar calculation. His objective was to determine the distance to the horizon from the observer's eyes, which in our model is the satellite slant range. But he has a picture that is similar enough to what I was trying to describe that it should help. Ideal AMSAT FM Transponder

The ideal AMSAT FM transponder for a cubesat is the PSK-31 transponder being developed for the Naval Academy PSAT mission. With an FM downlink, anyone can receive it with an HT and a laptop with PSK-31 software. And anyone with a 10m PSK-31 uplink can transmit to it. The reason it is ideal is that it is a multi-user transponder supporting up to 30 users at the same time. Everyone can transmit horizon-to-horizon and see everyone else. A big QSO party in the sky: http://aprs.org/psat/PSK31-DESIGN-NOTES.html And since it is FM, Everyone tuned into the downlink SEES THE SAME WATERFALL and sees EXACTLY where they are in the downlink. A small uplink doppler adjustment can keep each station locked to his chosen channel in the passband. Everyone can talk to everyone if they want, or go one-on-one too. The SSB uplink and UHF downlink transponder fits on a smaller than 3"x3" circuit board being developed by Mirek Kasal at Brno University. If we could just get more Cubeats to fly these things, we would have all the joys of multi-user transponders, and yet they fit well in any cubesat. The ONLY problem is the HF wire antenna. Ours is going to be a 4 or 6' whip of Nitinol Wire. In addition to thes PSK-31 transponder, PSAT also supports the usual APRS AX.25 transponder on 145.825 too. Launch is planned for Summer 2013. First time ever satellite related net on VHF

Hello all, As a part of our effort to continue promoting the proper use of the amateur radio satellites by the Cuban ham community and added to the several radio-conferences that Hector (CO6CBF), Pavel (CO7WT) had performed in the past months. It's a big pleasure to announce that we start this past Friday a VHF FM Net devoted entirely to the Amateur Radio Satellites on the 2m band on a simplex frequency for the Havana Province (capital of Cuba), with few coverage also to the surrounding provinces of Mayabeque and Artemisa. The net will be on the air every Friday from 19:00 to 20:00 local time on 145.550 MHz, CM2ESP is the Net Control Station. The net is divided in three sections: News; A Technical Topic; and Question and Answer Session. This first net was very appreciated by many hams, and a lot more were not able to check-in due to the severe thunderstorm that affected Havana right close to the starting time. The Cuban Satellite Group named Grupo de Radioaficionados para Operaciones Satelitales (GROS) will continue promoting and creating new activities to increase the presence of Cuban Amateur Radio Stations on the satellites and the activation of new grids. Several demonstrations and workshops are currently being scheduled.
