AO-7 Mode A/B

Not having much experience working the SSB birds, can anyone give me a rough schedule of when AO-7 goes from mode B to A and vice versa, and what mode it is in right now. I am supposed to work a SSB pass with a guy this coming Monday night around 2300z, and we only have mode B equipment. Is there any way to get a general idea/guess of what more it will be in? I don’t want to even mess with hauling equipment around if it won’t be in mode B. 73! Zack KD8KSN

I've worked every ham satellite that has been launched since I got on Oscar 7, cw, most of my gear at that time home brew in 1980. For the life of me I cannot see any difference in pushing a button on an FM bird than operating a cell phone, except that it is a 2 user operation and the time available is limited... Thanks for the reply Peter, I am " not" a school teacher . lol.... I have a mere setup for a satellite station , FM only . I would not attempt to set up a portable station for a classroom event and expect to recieve any of the downlinks We look forward to from ARISSAT . I have only downloaded 2 or 3 sstv pictures from Seeds 2 . That is with My controlled antenna and FM station . Is it so easy to receive sstv from Seeds ? I hear it and hear a good signal , but don't copy the pic very successfully . I think it will be the same power output that is from Seeds .? 500mw? I will be listening , but still have My doubts. I would like to be able to give a firm date for the ARISSat deployment, but there are a few issues that make that a moving target. The deployment is scheduled to occur during Russian EVA 29, today that is 27 July 2011. >From a teleconference last week there was a notice that the EVA may be pushed back a week or two if the Shuttle arrives in early July- nothing firm yet. I don't know how in the world an FM satellite (TWO USER) on a 12 minute pass would help in an emergency...Unless there was only one person involved in the emergency! Definitely a school project - as schools across the planet are anticipating the deployment. Especially schools in Russia and the U.S. AMSAT NEWS SERVICE ANS-184 re-capped how easy it will be to monitor ARISSat-1. Mother Nature has provided some pretty "biblical" disasters in recent months... Joplin, Haiti, Japan... we had our own bout of tornado’s here in central MA last month (in fact, I live in the the path of the ‘53 F5 Worcester tornado, which until Joplin, had the dubious honor of having the most fatalities.... yes, in Massachusetts). I think it would be pretty straight forward to review each, as an organization, or on your own, and make an honest assessment of what role Amateur Radio played in the aftermath of each, in duration, response, scope, ability to get back up and running, and impact, especially against the “other” media... cell, internet messaging, other radio services, and social media. Then judge 6-12 minute access to a moving, single-channel repeater five or six times a day (assuming you have the means during a disaster to know when the passes are) against the rest. Also, keep in mind how many will or could have access to ham radio, and how many have access to the rest. I would love nothing better to serve my community during a natural disaster, via VHF, HF, or even satellite. But how bad does it have to get before “all else” really does fail, or not come back up quickly? Bill W1PA

I must be missing something since having a very bad out come when I did (once) to use one. I have got to be missing something." I am not sure what you are "expecting" from the existing FM satellites. I am in my mid-50s as far as age goes, and still get excited at the wonderful technology that the FM birds exhibit. And although I have given my presentation entitled, "How to Work the FM Ham Satellites With Your HT" presentation more than 60 times to various clubs and audiences the past couple of years, I continue to find appreciative audiences for this aspect of this wonderful hobby. SO ... I do not completely understand "where you're coming from" as you tell us that thius might not be a "big deal" in the ham radio world. Yes, you and I know that workin' the FM sats is TRULY an example of the "line of sight" theory that we all read about while studying for our ham radio licenses. But as I make my presentations to clubs all over North America, I continue to find appreciative audiences, as others seem to not realize that with a "mere" Technician" amateur radio so much more than just working stations across the valley or hitting those hilltop repeaters. SO ... What's the "big deal?" It's something that "mere Technicians" can do in this magnificent hobby - in addition to "normal" voice privileges - and a privilege that is, IMHO, a truly remarkable and exciting aspect of "Amateur Radio." In an article in Tuesday’s Times, we take a look at the shuttle program's high technology and its lasting imprint on Southern California’s economy. Work on the shuttle program began in 1972 as the Apollo moon landings were coming to an end. The shuttle program marked a new era in human spaceflight and called for a quantum leap in space technology, as the article says: Before the shuttle, astronauts reached space by squeezing into a small capsule launched atop a massive rocket. By the time the shuttle was in design, the space program was looking for ways to keep as many as seven astronauts in orbit for weeks at a time in relative comfort. To do this, scientists and engineers had to rethink nearly every aspect of the endeavor, notably flight controls, rocket engines and protection from searing heat generated by reentry. question about the Space Station

Hi All:I observed the Space Station pass over this location(Hopkinton,RI) a couple of nights ago.The sky was relatively clear at the time.However,I observed a slight wobble( >.05 degrees ) as it passed from NNW to SSE.I have observed multiple Space Shuttle passes and I have never observed any wobbles in its orbit.Is the Space Station having any troubles with its gyroscopes?Could atmospheric conditions or the way it reflects sunlight explain my observation?Comments welcome!

Hi all, After 159 days since submitting the paperwork and couple follow up e-mails, I finally received my VUCC Satellite award. For some reason, I keep thinking I should've received some paperwork with the certificate and stickers. I thought they were suppose to have a copy of the grids already worked on a paper format. FROM the press office of Roscosmos: Alexander Samokutiaev, flight engineer of the International Space Station’s expedition 28, informed about the planning for the upcoming Russian EVA in his blog in Roscosmos web. According to Russian cosmonaut, the EVA is slated for August, pending the launch of the shuttle scheduled for July 8. Alexander will work outside the ISS with his colleague Sergey Volkov. The cosmonauts are to perform several ISS RS refurbishing tasks, as well as to launch small satellite Kedr. Russian cosmonauts onboard the International Space Station switched on small spacecraft Kedr on April 12, in order to commemorate the jubilee of Yury Gagarin’s mission. Small spacecraft Kedr developed under the RadioSkaf experiment bears the name adopted by Yu.A. Gagarin call sign in his historical flight, namely Kedr. The satellite’s signal will be transmitted at radio amateur frequency of 145.95 MHz. Kedr has radio amateur call sign RS1S. RadioSkaf is implemented in the framework of UNESCO’s student space education program. Kedr will transmit different signals, images, including the talks of famous Russian scientist Kostantin Tsiolkovsky, rocket Chief Designer Sergey Korolev conversation with the first cosmonaut during his 108-min historical mission, and famous Gagarin’s “Go!” (Poekhali!), of course. Well, it didn't take Amsat officials long to shoot down the proposal and tell me that ARISS does not stand for amateur radio use on ISS. ARISS is a free use of ham radio for PR under the guise of educational outreach. Probably payback for cancelling my membership after 25-years and resigning as Field Op (their rules). I found that I enjoy eating and having a roof over my head in my retirement so had to make a choice on what I spend money. G-5400/5500 Cross-Boom U-Bolts

Greetings, all I'm "improving" my elevation rotor setup, and I'm wondering what others are using to secure the cross-boom inside the elevation rotor. I've been using stainless hose clamps, and they work kinda-sorta OK, but have a tendency to slip. I'd really like to get either some proper size u-bolts, or the part numbers from the clamps Yaesu supplies with the rotor. They appear to be 54mm / 2-1/8" inside-the-legs, and I'm coming up blank on searching for some. There are no part numbers for the clamps in the manuals I have for the rotors. I have FOUR elevation rotors, and NO clamps! Seems like the clamps always get lost when people take these apart to sell. Thanks! 73, Jim KQ6EA

Well, 54mm is so close to 2-1/8" that it wouldn't matter. Either would fit, and the 54mm muffler clamps I found also state they work for 2-1/8" pipes. There I was yesterday, sitting on the side of the road (actually, off I-45N on the frontage road), at the intersection of grids EM20 and EM21, trying (unsuccessfully, it seems) to work the 1710z pass of SO-50 when the Texas State Police pull up behind my truck. You know the ones--the black and white units with a really large fellow wearing an impressive hat. To complete the picture, when he pulled up behind me I did have my arm out the window holding my home-brew 3-element 70 cm beam and pointing it where I could best hear the downlink. And he said, "What you in for, son?" Just kidding--and sorry for mixing metaphors. What he actually said was, "Can I ask what you are doing?" When I explained, in as non-technical terms as I could, he asked me to, "explain that again." I did. My wife was quite amused. He walked around my truck, noted the call sign on the plates (in Texas it actually says "radio operator" in small print on the plates), and I explained the antenna on the back window was for transmit and the hand-held one was for receive. He looked perplexed, but then smiled and told me he had a call from someone saying I was waving a gun around out my window. My wife actually chuckled at this point. He asked me to pull further off the road and went on back to his cruiser/interceptor and drove off. My wife continued with quips like, "I can't wait to tell people about this." I never did make any contacts on that pass (I've only had this radio 10 years, but I swear I still get confused on the menu choices), but managed 13 solid contacts today (AO-51 2201z) from the same spot on the South side of I-45 as I returned home from Dallas, including HK3Z, Aki, and CO6CBF, Hector. I was hoping to work some VEs to impress my wife, but I think they were all on royals watch for the weekend. 73, Jerry, K5OE

Great! I've always heard that the support for their rotors is spotty, but if they have them, I'll go that way. I live in Long Beach, and they're not very far from here. Hello there. Can any one explain to me what's keeping 51 alive over Europe at the moment. Its been great getting to use it during the pass over Uk. I did notice tho that it does stop working for a day every 2 day's?. Is some one uplinking the software in Europe to make it work?. Problem with registering WiSP using WIN7

I have finally switched to WIN7 32 bit from XP, and have a few odd little issues. One is that WiSP no longer recognizes my registration number as valid. (Double checked from the original e-mail.) Possibly a clue is that when I start the program, it already has ALAN-PC in the Callsign box. That is the name of the PC. Of course I clear it. It did register, once, and I _thought_ it was due to the caps lock being off. However, when I booted up this morning, it was unregistered and doesn't accept the registration with or without the caps lock being on. I did try some backward compatability settings, but no help. Anybody have this happen, with a solution? I am toying with changing the name of the machine to WA4SCA, but am holding off until some other support issues are solved. Alan WA4SCA

I'm trying to close out all the EM grids on satellite, and still need EM03, EM33, EM46, EM49, and EM19 confirmed. I'd love to make a schedule for any of these grids, either FM or SSB. Recent improvements to my antenna supports now allow me to work very low passes to the west and north. Proposal (ARISS on ISS): 1) Install a 100-KHz transponder unit on ISS, with usual digital beacon/engineering 2) It would run mode-UV 3) Installed internally in the ISS 4) Replace most of the current ISS ham radio equipment 5) Could be considered an upgrade/improvement to the existing ham radio on ISS 6) Use ISS power and existing ham radio antenna infrastructure (no solar panels)(no thermal requirements for space environ)(perhaps less radiation hardening) 7) Use batteries for stand-alone operation (recharged from ISS power) 8) Control commanded from ground (no intervention required by astronauts) 9) Local access for use of astronaut-hams 10) Provide emergency back-up comms for ISS (perhaps with a separate FM channel) 11) (perhaps) Use of existing ham-radio handheld on ISS on low-power to dedicated receiver which would activate astronaut repeater channel. 12) This FM channel could be used as FM ham repeater when not in use by astronauts (means world-wide monitoring for the astronauts as well as normal Leo FM activity) 13) Modular design for future upgrades and/or repair (easy installation by astronauts-plug*n*play) 14) Segmented pass-band to allow packet/APRS digipeating 15) Transmitters able to be shut down for eva and other critical missions either locally on ISS or from ground. 16) Perhaps a special Rx/Tx on ISS eva channel for cross-band repeat in event of loss of atmosphere emergency (help to sell the concept to NASA as a comms back-up). 17) No need for orientation (spin or de-spin), rad hardening, thermal structures (air-cooled), no propulsion, no launch requirements. 18) Easily maintained by supply from ground (repairs or upgrades). 19) Long-Life Re-direct of either Fox or P3E efforts? SatPC32 Question for an expert

Sat32PC works great for me but I do have one question. I am finishing up my rotor control software that works with SatPC32 and need to know what happens with SatPC32 when there is a directly overhead pass if SatPC32 is set up with a 90 degree max for the elevation rotor. I have no idea how to set up some sat orbit elements to produce a directly overhead pass for testing. In fact, I am not sure I even want to know how unless it is very simple. My best guess is that for example: If the current azimuth is 0 degrees and the current elevation is 89 degrees. If the next update would be azimuth 0 degrees and elevation 92 degrees I hope that SatPC32 would output azimuth 180 degrees and elevation 88 degrees as I believe this is the same heading. I know that in overhead passes the position is not critical but I would still like to know what SatPC32 does. If someone knows FOR SURE please let me know with a direct email as I no longer read the b-b postings. tnx and 73 W9KE

So I think everyone read the announcement ARRL made before FD. Now that FD weekend is at an end, can someone explain to me why NASA couldn't let the astronauts have 10 minutes on the radio for one pass? I mean were they having issues with the radio itself? I still don't see a 26th timeline as I thought that might give me a clue on why this weekend was an epic failure (I mean I couldn't even hear the digipeater at times). -aps (KC2ZSX)

Spectacular Minotaur launch from Wallops this evening

The Minotaur 1 rocket carrying the ORS-1 satellite was a spectacular sight tonight from Burtonsville, MD, about 120 air miles from the launch site. I saw the first stage exhaust plume and first stage burnout and staging in binoculars. I wish it were possible to record that sight on video, but photography is just not up to the task. Launch was at 11:09 pm. There are more launches coming up, including a lunar mission later this year and space station resupply launches next year. Dan Schultz N8FGV

What a first-class club. And what experience in that room. I always "poll" my audiences to see how long folks have been hams ... "More than ten years? Twenty? Thirty? ... " MANY hands remained "up" at 30 years. Their club is catering to all facets of the hobby and to all age groups - from promoting Boy Scouts of America events to last weekend's Field Day to many other projects and programs and events annually. I know of no other club in the region that can claim "50+ years of existence - as well as 50 years of ARRL affiliation." Who cares? In the following scenario, I would care! If I had the call sign N1OCL and I moved from Connecticut (or where ever) to Montana and then tried to get a ham plate for my vehicle, I would care. I believe my application would be turned down by the Montana DOL, because the Montana license plate number N1OCL already belongs to someone else, a non-ham. We know the problem exists for this call. I've heard it also exists for others as well. We suspect N1OCL is someone's airplane registration number and the guy got it as a personalized plate number. It perhaps is legal in Montana, but I still would be ticked off and yes, I would care. Like I said in my first response to this thread. Very happy to see AMSAT on Facebook. I sent in a request to join. What would brighten my day even more is a threaded discussion group. I am sure most of us have used a Yahoo group. It is nice to be able to group postings by subject. It is also helpful to be able to search. The reduction in clutter would be most welcome. Imagine having all the Field Day postings located in one thread so they could be ignored by those not interested in the subject or read with great interest by those who feel strongly about it. Facebook and our old school bulletin board are great for Twitter type postings that have no long or in some cases short term value but a threaded group would offer the possibility of long term access to information.

Hee Hee... ! I love it.. It's not just ham plates but any of those personalized or "special" plates that cause confusion. I have run lots of plates that came back invalid, and by doing as you say, putting in spaces, or trying a different category of plate, etc. they will come back OK. Also, you might have commercial plates with ham call on them. Now, what do they do? Run it as a "Auto", or "commercial" ? Try both! What usually brings the coppers on in force is when you run a plate and it comes back valid but to another car.. Definitely something strange going on there! I can see it now , USA Today headlines " Ham operator successfully passes ARRL RadioGram over Orbiting Satellite" . As much trouble and time it takes to pass a message over much more controlled frequiencies , I could not imagine trying to pass a formatted message over a satellite , therefore rendering a sat as useless for handling emergency traffic. And I still say a net control type format would allow for many more contacts on field day than just QRZ. Jerry WB5LHD

Lets see now, some tongue in cheek ideas on the use of FM birds. 1. FCC prohibit FM radios that put out more than 5 watts on satellite frequencies. 2. FM satellites should have controlled access similar to closed repeaters so only "authorized" operators could use them. 3. Ban the use of any satellite antenna not hand held and with more than 1 db gain. 4. Prohibit the use of computers in plotting satellite paths or tracking satellites. Obviously, if the antenna is hand held, electronic tracking devices would be eliminated. 5. During FD operation, since it is an "Emergency Readiness Operation", class 1D should be eliminated. 6. FM satellites, when activated by the control station, should have should have the capability of blocking multiple calls from the same station. 7. And of course, all FM satellite passes should have at least one on-air "operations policeman" Merle, AA4QE

My sincere thanks to the gentlemen who replied to me directly! :) It's a fantastic bunch of guys/gals! :) I didn't mention that I already have MacDoppler Lite and, if MacDopper for Cocoa will handle doppler, for a linear bird, using a single FT-817ND, I'll give it a shot. I belong to the MacDoppler Yahoo Group but no one seems to give a clear answer exactly "what" MacDoppler will/will not do to a '817 to handle doppler. Field Day #2 (Golden Packet Event)

For those portable AMSAT folks that did not get their full outdoors satrisfaction via the birds, do not forget the PACKET APRS "Field Day" on Sunday 24 July from Mountain Tops along the Appalachain trail from Alabama to Maine and along the Pacific Crest Trail from San Diego to Seattle! This is a 4 hour event with the goal of terrestrially digipeating APRS packet messages over thousnands of miles via a number of IDEALLY located portable digipeater stations (Think D700's) Carried to the tops of these strategic mountains. We can do the East Coast in 14 hops and think the west coast can be done in much less with their higher mountains. Also there is an opportunity for a Continental Divide Trail attempt if anyone wants to get that started... This will be our 3rd attempt along the Appalachians and 1st attempt along the Pacific Crest Trail. Now that most of the FD bruhaha is over with, and the lack of a heo being obvious. Exactly where are we or our DL friends in this regard. The bottom line is no doubt money/launch. How much money? When/where etc. The details appear to be in vacuum. Some of my friends ask me, "why do you keep your AO-40 (sobsob) gear/antennas etc still up and ready". I respond, "I believe". I have had lots of questions privately how I got Nova to work again. So, for all, here is what I did... I went to Kep. Elements menu and on the Space-Track.org I unchecked all the boxes so that nothing is currently updating from Space-Track (until they fix Nova for SSL). I then clicked on HTTP and changed the remove URL to www.amsat.org Then I removed everything in Remote Files and added the following AMSAT path: amsat/ftp/keps/current/nasa.all Then I said OK and clicked back on Kep. Elements, Internet Update, Start Download and it grabbed the nasa.all keps from AMSAT and loaded them perfectly. Hope this helps! For field day qso , You don't need grid . You exchange station ID. WB5LHD 1d la . Control operator , which You should already have His info , says : confirm WB5LHD 1d la. How many contacts could You make in one pass? And then a different operator for next pass on West Coast. Or if We're lucky , Maybe 3 passes . I am curious to know how many " confirmed " contacts were made on one pass ? Jerry WB5LHD

Somewhere in the last century (1998 or 1999, I think), I wrote an intro article about antennas for home stations. The specifics may be a little dated, but I believe the concepts are still valid--maybe more so today with only LEOs to work. If you are interested, here is the,admitedly aged, article: http://web.archive.org/web/20001005114432/http://members.aol.com/k5oejerry/… If you want the short version (don't we all?), here's the summary: 1. Big antennas for LEO satellites are a personal choice, but not the only one that works. 2. Elevation control is nice to have, but not mandatory either. The need for elevation control is related to the gain of the antennae and the size of your budget. 3. Ditto for automatic control of the antenna array. 4. Popular options, that will all work, are listed in decending order of complexity and cost (you choose): A. Oscar Class Station: big CP beams, G-5400, auto-tracking, etc. B. VHFer station: using less expensive beams already on the tower and just adding elevation control (PA3GUO posting) C. HOA Restrictions Special: small 3 or 4 ele beams, good preamps at the antennas, and an amplifier in the attic. Elevation control not required. For the price of a new G-5400 you could turn that dual-band HT into a mini-OCS: $150 for a pair of small V/U beams, $150 for a UHF preamp, $75 for a TV rotor, and $100 for an 80 W VHF amp. But then you would be tempted to run FD as 1D and all your pals would lose respect for you :-) 73, Jerry, K5OE

The "real NC" would quickly assert their position. There are lots of nets held on ham radio...how often do others claim to be net control...virtually never. If you are saying someone will cause malicious interference, there is no cure other than peer pressure and official FCC action. The way to introduce Net Controlled passes is to do it in advance of FD. In fact the idea might catch on when folks find it manages the typical "FM chaos" that reigns currently. I propose there be a Net Day every month on certain FM satellites starting with AO-51, if it is healthy enough. Good practise for a real "emergency comm" situation.
