No signal on 145.950 here in Cal. With my luck they probably started the 15 min timer just before LOS... By the way, confirming the earlier post about inconsistent KEPs. Gpredict updates from Celestrak, and was slightly behind Predict which I had loaded from Amsat.org website. (I use Gpredict for pass prediction and eye candy during a pass; predict drives my rotor and Doppler shift radio client.) Greg KO6TH

As Armando, N8IGJ noted in his earlier email, NASA as published an update of today's activities ( it can be found at :http://www.nasa.gov/directorates/somd/reports/iss_reports/index.html) .Contained this document is a section about ARISSat Dmitri performed hardware setup and test activation of the TEKh-43 Radioskaf-B "Kedr" microsatellite in the MRM2 Poisk module, connecting it to an 825M3 Orlan battery and checking out its 430 MHz transmitter from the satellite control panel. [The small satellite was named Kedr in honor of the call sign of Yuri Gagarin. It will be activated onboard the station tomorrow, April 12, i.e., Cosmonautics Day, when the world celebrates the anniversaries of the first human flight into space and the first Space Shuttle flight. Development, manufacturing and launch of Kedr is the first phase in Russia's integrated program approved by UNESCO, with the goal to create and operate mini-satellites with a mass less than 100 kg by combined efforts of students across the world. Once Kedr is activated, it will transmit 25 greetings in 15 languages, pictures of Earth, and telemetry data from science hardware and support systems, as well as historical audio recordings. 50 years after Gagarin's flight all ham radio operators across the world thus will have a unique opportunity to hear the famous "Poyekhali" (Let's Go!) from Earth orbit.] Some clarifications: ARISSat-1, RadioSkaf-V, RadioSkaf-B, Kedr are all names for the same satellite. It is doubtful that the satellite will transmit pictures of earth as it is inside the ISS. ARISSat-1 only transmits on 2M. The ARISS team has arranged for the TM-D700 transceiver aboard the ISS to also transmit the ARISSat signals on 437.55 MHz. There are 24 different messages that will transmit in a sequence, one of which is the Gagarin-ground station conversation. Glen et all, Once upon a time, during WWII, the phonetic alphabet started: Abei, Baker, Dog.....etc. With the advent of NATO, it was soon realized that the American version, or any ones else, was not suitable for international communication. Soon the NATO phonetic alphabet was developed by the military, and became international standard. The present international phonetic alphabet defines the letter K as KILO, not kilowatt. It would be very helpful for the amateur community to stick to established international standards and not bicker with their own cute substitutes. Citizens band has infiltrated ham radio to the point of satellite communication. Ya know this stuff never gets old. I've been messing around with this stuff for about 50 years. This afternoon I finished installing my FT-8800 in my truck. I felt as nervous as when I was a novice with my home brew 6L6 (look it up). I worked 5 guys on AO-51. Welcome back to the sats. I did not hear the pass you mentioned, but typically AO-51 is very busy on mid-day passes, even more so on weekends. The early morning passes are usually better. Of the FM birds, AO-51 is the busiest, AO-27 is a bit less busy, and SO-50 is usually not very busy. SO-67 is also not that busy, but it has been turned on just for a week or two a month. Blew the dust off the FT-530 and Arrow and sat out in the parking lot at work. Was that pretty typical (i.e. quantity of stations) now for a mid-afternoon, weekday pass over the US? Not wanting to be a naysayer, but this was discussed a few weeks ago on Amsat-bb with the word from the mission staff that no external power connection was provided. In other words it runs on solar-charged batteries. Of course, we know they had some sort of "bench power connection" for testing. I hope the "folks" on the ISS are good technicians and can "rig up" something. There was a concern the batteries might drop off in storage until this summer when the "Main Show" is to happen. Of course maybe they can "duck tape" it outside and let it run on the panels/batteries? OK that was in jest (humor). I only have operational is a 2m Lindenblad CP omni directional antenna that is probably not good enough to hear ARISSat when down at the horizon and at max range. Just luck that my 2m-eme system is out of commission at present else I would had a excellent receiver. AMSAT Logo

Does anyone have or know of anyone that has a good quality copy of the AMSAT logo I can use on a Power Point presentation? I have permission to use it, but I can not find any good ones. I found several that have the white background behind them, but I need one that I can overlay on a (eg) grey background and not have the white rectangular box around the logo. I did find one - http://www.amsat.org/amsat/ftp/misc/logo/official-scan.gif - but the graphics where really bad (very rough edges) when overlaid on a grey background. I see several on the AMSAT website, so I know there are some out there. Thanks! Zack KD8KSN

I am sure it should be if there is an external capability available on the ARRISSat to recharge the batteries and looking at the the live video from ISS (NASA TV) looks like the crew is trying on the same, retiring for the night now and will listen tomorrow at 18.37 UTC 81 degree pass . Boy did I open up a can of worms... I personaly think that even though we dont "Have" to use the standard I think is not only sounds the best but just seems everyone should use the same one in my opinion. Sure if you know you are talking with some guy in Mexico or whatever, maybe then use the geographical one. There is always going to be a language barrier, and I will agree with some of you to do what it takes to get the job done. But on a general rule I will be using the STANDARD and I also agree that "Kilowatt" is the stupidest most insecure substitute ever. Might as well start talking like the cops, boy and george for chist's sake. Oh and by the way its HAND HELD not handy talky, you guys talkin on your baby moniter or somethin? I dont like being told what to use any more than the other guy, BUT the STANDARD IS BEST why do you think us pilots use it? (student pilot here...) Have a nice day! :) Kevin KF7MYK

Wanted: ARISSat-1 audio recordings

First call for ARISSat-1 audio recordings If you haven't already heard about it, ARISSat-1 will be activated while still inside the International Space Station. The transmissions are scheduled to begin around Monday 11 April 2011 at 14:30 UTC and continue until 10:30 UTC on 13 April 2011. The satellite will be running off of the battery, so the transmissions will be only 40-60 second long. There will be a delay of about two minutes between transmissions. That is, about 40-60 seconds ON, then about two minutes OFF (silence). If you are able to make an audio recording of the signals from ARISSat-1, I would be very interested in obtaining a copy of your recording. I would be most interested in recordings of the CW and BPSK signals, but if are able to record the voice and SSTV signals I would be interested in those too. If you can make an SDR recordings ( I and Q ) with a Funcube dongle, FlexRadio, or SDR-IQ, record at the highest rate that your hardware and software supports. If you are making a regular audio recording, set the sampling rate to the "highest quality." If you can choose sample sizes, for example between 8-bit and 16-bit samples, choose the largest size. If you get any recordings with any of the signals from ARISSat, I would be very interested in obtaining a copy even if the recording is huge. Save your recordings as .WAV files. Don't use MP3 format and don't convert the recordings into MP3 recordings. Leave the recordings as big huge .WAV files. Has anyone tried using the Yaesu FTM-350AR mobile to work the FM satellites. It is stated in the manual that it is a full-duplex radio. Been looking at something to use mobile. I have no problems figuring out most adhoc phonetic alphabets, but when people use two separate words to represent one letter I find it distracting and confusing. I doubt I'm the only person who suffers from this. (In case any one is wondering, yes I was trained in the use of the icao phonetics a long time ago, and I work in a field were the abriveation KW means Kilo Watt.) In any event as this is ham radio the worst that will likely happen is that an extra letter will get added to some one's call. 73

Diplexer

I was wondering if anyone has scene the article about using a diplexer (I think that's the right name) on both ends for a satellite setup? One where the two antennas are then a single feed then another one to split things up again by the radio. Hi all, To celebrate the April 12 event of Yuri Gagarin's first manned flight to space, and to receive ARISSat1, we will hold a mini field-day in the Herzliya Science Center on coming Tuesday, (together with a BarBQ..) Our event is planned to take place between 12:00UTC (15:00 Israel time) until the ISS pass that is expected in the evening little after 18:00 UTC (21:00 Israel time). Success is not guaranteed, as we are not yet experienced with this kind of operation, but we will appreciate any European and Russian operators that can show up in the mutual passes of AO07, AO51, FO29 within these hours, and also SO67 and VO52 toward 18:00UTC, to try and make QSOs with us, and help us to demo HAM satellites operation. The Need for Phonetics

Kevin, KF7MYK, provides a great example of what happens when operators do not use phonetics. You may think you are saving time by not using them, but the fact is that unless someone is familiar with your callsign, they may copy it incorrectly. You want everyone on the bird to have your callsign correct so they can call you with the right call rather than having to ask for it again in phonetics, or worse yet, getting it wrong. If you call someone using just their suffix, it means that you don't have their prefix. When you hear someone call you that way, you know they need the missing part of your call. If you have someone's complete callsign, don't call them by their suffix. That's not their callsign. Sometimes you only hear the grid square and call someone that way. This is an indicator that you need the persons complete callsign. A complete exchange is what we should strive for. If you call someone with an incorrect call, other stations pick up on that callsign and the inaccuracy propagates throughout the pass. You find yourself looking them up on qrz.com and not finding a match. Then you are listening to the recording and trying to figure out where you went wrong. Satellites have varying audio quality and the users radios are all over the place in terms of level and clarity. Phonetics will get the callsign through correctly and avoid the problems associated with not getting it right. Everyone is not copying the bird full quieting. Give them half a chance. Also keep in mind that when you are working someone whose first language is not English, they may have even more trouble with your callsign if you don't use proper phonetics. Many non-English speaking amateurs know just enough to copy a callsign, give you their name, report and QTH. They learn the International Phonetic Alphabet and will recognize the words associated with the letters. If you use some other words, they may not understand what letters you are trying to convey. Adjust your operating based on who you are trying to work. Remember that everyone on the bird is listening to your QSO and hopefully writing down your callsign for future reference. Use phonetics and SLOW DOWN. Don't run your grid square into the end of your callsign. Announce your callsign at a constant pace. This methodology will help everyone get it right the first time and save airtime in the long run. All this, of course, in my humble opinion. 73, John K8YSE

SATPC32 and FT847

Hi all, In an attempt to dabble my toes in the linear transponder pool, I asked a FT847 owner friend to bring his rig over to try and understand the mechanics of making it all work with the computer interfaced. Got SatPC32 to communicate at 9600, 8, none, 1, none, with the radio and the radio responded to changes I made on the program like using keystrokes to modify the frequency of uplink or downlink. Problem is that although the program was tracking Doppler correctly, the radio was not tracking at all. With the multiple lines of possibilities on the Doppler.sqf file as is the case for AO-51, I can go to the CAT dialog and change the mode frequencies just fine, the radio goes to the new frequencies and even reflects the current state of the Doppler shifted frequencies but from there, no Doppler corrections occur. Now I remember reading the "Manual" that "CAT Delay" for the FT897 needed to be set to 20. Cat Delay is in the "Radio Setup" dialog is defaulted to 70. I realize this now after the fact with radio not in my presence. Is this the reason that the above mentioned problem could be occurring? I hope to make another go at this in a few weekends in the hope of getting ready for Field Day. Thanks for the help of the list. ARISSat-1 startup sequence

FYI The task for the cosmonauts to turn on ARISSat-1 is scheduled to begin at 1430 UTC on April 11. That means that they will begin the procedure of getting the satellite, moving the antenna coax, adjusting the antenna switches in the ISS, then flipping the three switches on the satellite control panel to ON. These switches and the circuitry are designed to keep the satellite from transmitting for 15 minutes after all three switches are in the On position. This was done so as not to pose any hazard to the cosmonauts during the EVA to deploy the satellite. Given all these activities I suspect that there will be no transmissions until around 1500 UTC. According to my tracking software this puts the first coverage area in the southeastern Pacific. Other than ships, southern South America should be the first area to hear the ARISSat-1/RadioSkaf-V signals. The satellite will be in Low Power mode, 40-60 seconds ON and 2 minutes OFF. An average 8 minute pass will only have about three transmission periods and two minutes can seem very long when waiting for a signal to appear. Be patient The varying ON times occur because when the On timer expires the current FM transmission item (ID, telemetry, greeting, SSTV) will finish before the transmitter shuts off. The ARISSat-1/RadioSkaf-V satellite on board the ISS and awaiting deployment in late July of 2011 will be turned on and transmit during the celebration period. The transmissions will begin on Monday 11 April 2011 at 14:30 UTC and continue until 10:30 UTC on 13 April 2011. Due to the fact that the solar panels are covered, the satellite will be powered only by the onboard battery. The satellite will run in low power mode. This means that the transmissions will cycle ON/OFF. They will be On for 40-60 seconds and Off for 2 minutes. The FM transmissions on 145.95 MHz will contain an ID for the satellite, call sign RS01S, international greeting messages, spoken telemetry values and SSTV images. There will also be CW transmitted on 145.919 MHz and SSB BPSK-1000 telemetry data on 145.920 MHz. ARISSatTLM software can be used with a computer soundcard to tune, receive, demodulate, decode and display the telemetry values if tuned correctly. The transponder will not be active during this event. AMSAT will issue commemorative certificates to those receiving the transmissions and sending an email to gagarin(a)arissat1.org or yuri(a)arissat1.org with your name or group, a description of what you heard and the UTC time you heard it. Recording the Battery voltage values and the UTC time you received them will be especially helpful. One of the messages will be a conversation between Yuri Gagarin and ground control. The ARISS team is working to get the D-700 aboard the ISS to also transmit the FM signals on 437.550 MHz. Hi Bob, It is simple really - all of the common gadgets sold for ham use as duplexers are really diplexers that can be used as duplexers or diplexers :) And Dom is correct. The microwave Radars used a similar principle but with 1/4 wave sections of waveguide instead of coax. Full Duplex as a Single Channel on a HT

Bill, The Alinco DJ-G7 is full duplex and has 100 cross band memory channels that can do Satellites. You can setup 5 memory channel pairs to cover first approach, near approach, Closest position, near departure, far departure. Then just click through the memories as the satellite passes. Another DJ-G7 feature is it can also do 1 watt on 1.2GHZ uplink to AO51. I suggest using 5khz steps on 435mhz so it does 5 memory sets. Even if I can have memories on both sides, I still have to turn both knobs -- If so, why wouldn't I just use a VX-170/VX-177 pair of HT's, and turn both knobs? I can program my DJ-V5 to have the "odd split" (TX144/RX432) single knob channels, but of course, it is not full duplex. I turn one knob and get 435.310 145.875 {click} 435.300 145.880 {click} 435.290 145.885 I could do this with the 20 DUP channels on the Ft-100D. Even though the IC-W32A has two "knobs", it looks like (from the manual) only one can be in memory mode at one time, so TX would be in VFO mode, and the other would be in channel mode. Is this correct? So for each change (AOS, MID, LOS), I have to turn both knobs one click, correct? Even if I can have memories on both sides, I still have to turn both knobs -- If so, why wouldn't I just use a VX-170/VX-177 pair of HT's, and turn both knobs? I can program my DJ-V5 to have the "odd split" (TX144/RX432) single knob channels, but of course, it is not full duplex. Bill W1PA

April 8, 2011 To All RADIO AMATEURS BID: $ANS-098.01 SILVER SPRING, MARYLAND (AMSAT News Service) While awaiting deployment from the International Space Station (ISS) in late July, an amateur radio satellite specifically designed to in- terest students in scientific and technological careers will be activated and begin transmissions from the ISS in mid-April of this year. Transmissions are scheduled to begin Monday around 14:30 UTC April 11 and ending Wednesday around 10:30 UTC on April 13. Electronic certificates of the event will be available to those summitting reception reports to: Gagarin(a)arissat1.org. These transmissions will commemorate 50 years since the flight of Russian Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin as the first human to enter outer space. The satellite (called ARISSat-1, RadioSkaf-V) will send telemetry, SSTV images, and messages of goodwill as it orbits earth inside the ISS. ARISSat-1 is a cooperative effort between AMSAT, ARISS (Amateur Radio on the International Space Station,) RSC-Energia (The Russian Space Agency) and NASA. The design, development and construction of the satellite was done by AMSAT volunteers. Original plans call- ed for the satellite to be housed inside an old Russian spacesuit. But when the suit became unavailable, a spaceframe was developed to house the radio equipment and solar panels. The new satellite was named ARISSat-1. Other names for the spacecraft are RadioSkaf-V and Kedr. The transmitted callsign will be RS01S. In order to operate inside the ISS, ARISSat-1 will be connected to an external amateur radio antenna already mounted on the outer sur- face of the space station. The craft will use its own battery for operation, therefore it will be in low power mode. As a result, listeners can expect 40-60 second "ON" periods followed by two-minute "OFF" periods to save battery power. To listen for ARISSat-1 voice signals during this special event, FM receivers should be tuned to 145.950 MHz. Specific only to this event, planning is currently underway to provide an additional FM broadcast downlink at 437.550 MHz. Even though the satellite will only have an output of 250 mW on 2 meters, a standard FM handy talkie equipped with a quarter-wave whip antenna should be able to receive the voice ID, voice telemetry and greeting messages as the craft passes overhead. SSTV transmissions may also be demodulated and viewed using a free downloadable program such as MMSSTV that is available at: http://mmhamsoft.amateur-radio.ca/pages/mmsstv.php. For Mac users, Multiscan2 is available at: http://web.me.com/kd6cji/MacSSTV/MultiScan.html. Those planning to monitor voice broadcasts from ARISSat-1 are request- ed to make note of the telemetry battery voltage values and UTC time, and then submit their records to Gagarin(a)arissat1.org. Digital tele- metry will be sent at 145.920 MHz. Given the low duty cycle of the spacecraft, those planning to receive the digital telemetry are en- couraged to record the entire signal band using the FunCube dongle or SDR-IQ receivers. Software for demodulating the BPSK-1000 telemetry is available at: http://www.arissattlm.org/download/ARISSatTLM_050_Setup.exe A software user guide will be available soon. This special period of operation is only expected to continue during the two-day 50 year commemoration of Gagarin's famous mission. The actual deployment of ARISSat-1, first announced for February 2011, is now expected to take place during an EVA scheduled for late July, 2011. After it is deployed from the International Space Station, ARISSat-1 is expected to be in orbit for a period of up to six months. ND9M/MM Sat Ops: FM01 Update

Unfortunately I had the VO52 pass at 08/1352Z all to myself when the ship was in FM01. The downlink was strong, but there were no takers. My ship was still barely in FM01 when SO67 came up a while later. There was no QRM on the bird's downlink, so I was all set. But the ship's engineering department chose that time to test the high pressure foam system used for extinguishing fires. I normally set up the step ladder station on the flight deck, but we have a foam cannon (called a "monitor" for some reason) trained on the deck, and my station was right in line to get blasted. Luckily, I was able to get the gear out of the way just in time, but the fire system test didn't allow me any chance to get set up again before SO67 went over the hill. We're now in FM02, the last grid square of this voyage. I'll be on board until Sunday morning and will be able to make this grid available a few times through tomorrow evening. Tks Omar. I don't know for sure if SO-67 is active, but it's scheduled to turn on at 08/1435Z. But I was on SO-67's freq for the previous pass that started at 1310Z, and heard a full quieting ragchew between two N4 ops that continued well past the LOS. I'm assuming that the 435.345 downlink is also the output of a 70cm repeater located close enough to wipe out the satellite for me locally. Yaesu FT-736R interface for HRD I finally finished a project to build an interface for the Yaesu FT736R so that it would work with Ham Radio Deluxe. It seems to be working well and i've sent it out to several testers and i haven't found any problems from the the interface. I had a pcb made and its available from batchpcb.com. It uses a PIC 18f14k50 microcontroller with a usb interface. The board has 3 pads on it which you wire to a 6 pin Din plug. All the code is open sourced via the GPL. >From AMSAT-NA - The transmissions will begin on Monday 11 April 2011 at 14:30 UTC and continue until 10:30 UTC on 13 April 2011. Due to the fact that the solar panels are covered, the satellite will be powered only by the onboard battery. The satellite will run in low power mode. This means that the transmissions will cycle ON/OFF. They will be ON for 40-60 seconds and OFF for 2 minutes. 145.950 MHz FM Downlink: FM transmissions will cycle between a voice ID, select telemetry values, 24 international greeting messages in 15 languages and SSTV images. One of the messages will be a conversation between Yuri Gagarin and ground control. 145.919 MHz CW Beacon The CW transmissions will be callsign ID, select telemetry, and callsigns of people actively involved with the ARISS program. 145.920 MHz SSB BPSK-1000 Telemetry The BPSK transmissions will feature a new 1kBPSK protocol developed by Phil Karn, KA9Q to be readable in low signal level conditions. The BPSK data will transmit satellite telemetry. Free ground station soundcard demodulator and display software will be available. Note that the linear transponder will not be active during this event. /end/

I will be QRV aboard the Carnival Ecstasy from late on 11-Apri-2011 till early on 16 April-2011 (CDT). This is a family holiday (10 of us), but I will work as many FM satellite passes as our hectic schedule allows. AO-27 is on a timer and is usually only active on ascending passes about the time it crosses 30 degrees North latitude. There is a program that will predict when it is in analog repeater mode and it can be downloaded at http://sites.google.com/site/ao27satellitescheduler/ When you first run the program you need to update the files(TOPR and EPOCH) instructions are on the page, simple as pressing CTRL+U

I honestly am not sure about AO27 only working in the sun since whenever I work it it is in the sun, but I don’t think it is ever scheduled to be on during overnight passes anyhow. Someone please correct me if I am wrong.
