As I posted on Monday, the ARISSatTLM software is not yet ready for distribution. We are still testing it. We expect to release the free ARISSatTLM software next week. This software will demodulate, decode and display the BPSK-1000 telemetry and Experiment data as well as the CW signal. Decoding Software for ARISSat-1

The Web site that Carlos is using to host the decoding software is giving browsers' "security warnings" and "invalid certificates" messages. Can "we" assist Carlos and host his wares somewhere else? I realize that going to his site is probably all fine ... but the warnings are enough to possible scare some away frm the project. Thank you Greg. Makes sense to me now. Also, just calculated the velocity of a 90 minute LEO orbit and the velocity of a geostationary 24 hr orbit using circumference and time. Found that the velocity at LEO is higher, so presumably the decrease in orbit altitude of Arissat due to decay must also add acceleration. What they are trying to do is to separate the orbits of the ISS and ARISSat as quickly as possible, to avoid the potential for a collision. Consider the options: 1. Throw it sideways to the ISS orbit. The result is that twice per orbit the two spacecraft's paths will cross, side to side. Bad idea. 2. Throw it ahead of the ISS (faster orbit speed). This will raise the orbit, slightly, and also make it a bit elliptical (up and down). The higher orbit makes the satellite go behind the ISS, but the elliptical shape also means that the orbits will cross every orbit (but out of phase, so they won't be at the same place when they do). But, then as the ARISSat orbit decays, they will get closer and closer, potentially getting back to the same place. Not good, either. 3. Throw it behind the ISS (slower orbit). As you note, this will lower the orbit (and make it a bit elliptical), and initially the apogee of the orbit will intersect that of the ISS. Being in a lower orbit, ARISSat will move ahead of the ISS, and over time, as the ARISSat orbit decays, the two will diverge even farther. So, this is the safest. At least, I think that's the logic. If not, pass me some of that tuna... Greg KO6TH

Satpc32 and Azimuth only rotors? Functional?

I am getting closer to putting my first satellite base station together (in lieu of the Arrow that I am currently using) and am giving serious consideration to a fixed 15* antenna setup such as the Gulf Alpha designs. Having never mounted antennas, rotors etc... I am a bit concerned about my less than amazing mechanical aptitude and having to get cross-booms, Az/El rotors etc... working correctly. Is anyone using SatPc32 to successfully control Azimuth only rotors? If so, what is required to get everything working together? I would still like to automate the rotor and doppler control if at all possible. On a somewhat related note - is anyone else using a setup like this (fixed elevation) and if so, are you happy with the performance? Thanks for any thoughts, I appreciate the input, Zach KJ4ZVV

Interesting debate. I would be interested in submitting my book of qsl cards for an award but the problem is that my operations with an Arrow were in different countries, such as: F/G0SFJ/P YL/G0SFJ/P LZ/G0SFJ/P etc etc and probably a half-dozen or so qsl cards from each location. Zach, I use a single 2' long Elk antenna with 15 degrees fixed elevation. It works well. See photos at: http://www.myhamshack.com/NZ5N/Pictures/. Some suggest 20 or even 30 degrees fixed elevation but that's too much. You want low fixed elevation so you will have good gain on sats when they are at very low elevation (when they are furthest away and you have an opportunity for the best available DX). In my humble opinion, a pair of Gulf Alphas on a cross-boom with az-el rotation would be overkill for what is up in the air now. With just the Elk, I have worked Holland from south Florida (7400 km) via AO-7 at 1.5 degrees. The world DX record on AO-7 is 7766 km. I do have a mast-mounted preamp, which greatly helps. I use an old TV rotor for azimuth rotation. It cannot be controlled with SatPC32. The program probably is able to control some types of azimuth-only rotors, but I do not have the details. Strange Signal - 436Mhz - (sample provided)

Has anybody else heard this -- http://mysite.verizon.net/vzeqe0l7/Signal_436MHz.wav (recorded in USB mode) - in AM mode it just sounds like a constant tone -- The signal strength is not constant - and peaks about every 10 seconds - - A new radar perhaps? I was running for some time yesterday (02/07/2011) and for at least an hour today (02/08/2011) stopping around 2100Z. I'm located FM19 - I believe it's originating south of me. Was everyone on AO-51? SO-50 & AO-51 had a mutual pass at 2329 from DM33. I tried SO-50 figuring it would be less crowded. I was right, I was the only one on! I actually had to transmit the 74hz on tone before I could hear my downlink. Toward the end of the pass it sounded like someone else was trying to answer me, all I heard were a couple of short carriers, no modulation. Was anyone else trying to work SO-50? KD8KSN and KD8KSN/8 QSOs Now in LoTW

Well, that sure was easy enough. That was one of the first times in awhile that I have followed the instructions on something and it has actually worked! ;-) I uploaded all QSOs that were in my log DATED **10-24-2010** TO PRESENT. Up until Oct. 24 I used paper logs. 268 regular and 73 portable QSOs were uploaded with only 40 matches (?????). My home QTH is self explanatory, but here is a breakdown of my portable uploads: KD8KSN/8 – EN80sa/EM89sx – October 30, 2010 – 22 QSOs KD8KSN/8 – EN70vb – November 29, 2010 – 7 QSOs KD8KSN/8 – EN90ba/EM99bx – December 17, 2010 – 30 QSOs KD8KSN/8 – EN90ba/EM99bx – January 29, 2011 – 14 QSOs Note that I use the designator “8” after my call instead of “P.” Whenever you work me portable, log my call+whatever designator I am in (ie. KD8KSN/4; KD8KSN/0). Do not use /P or /M. Please email me with any questions or if you don’t have a match when you think you should. Also, I am working on getting the KD8KSN/8 EN90/EM99 cards out from last weekend. I placed the order a week ago, but I have not got a shipping confirmation yet. G5400 elevation issue

The display on the control box reads correct elevation, but on my digital display on the Easy Rotor Controller shows erratic elevation position. I have recalibrated it several times with no success. It won't read any elevation until it is around 20° give or take. It also seems to have become worse since our really cold temps set in. The ARISSat-1 team is still working on the first release version of the BPSK-1000 software. We hope to release a version within the next week. The PC version is only running on XP at the moment. Hi, I am in the process of uploading my logs to LoTW, and I sent a request for a certificate for KD8KSN/8 to cover my portable operations in Ohio, and I set the begin date and left the end date blank. After I did that I realized that you can only have one location per certificate. What should I do in this case? Do I need separate certs for each portable operation in Ohio, or is there are way to go in and change the location? Will ARRL allow you to have 3,4,5,etc., certs for KD8KSN/8? If I cannot change the location, is there a way to get in and set the end date? 73! Zack KD8KSN

If you want to criticize something that affects Satellite Operations... lets start listing the call signs of the alligators and misfits on the FM sats and discuss their operating "conditions." (Either range can be easily changed by swapping out 1 crystal.) 10 watts out. The original hand mike was shot, and has been replaced with a Shure CM-140 mobile communications mike. Spaceflight, as part of the Rocket City Space Pioneer Google Lunar X-Prize Team, is responsible for mission integration and providing space transportation services to Low Lunar Orbit. What has me a little confused right now is why some DO NOT think it is okay to use someone else's recording. In the case of a recorder failing because of dead batteries, you can't blame that on the op - his recorder died. There is nothing wrong with WHAT recording he uses. Why does K8YSE post all those recordings to his website? I understand what everyone says about not using someone else's recording because your receiving was bad, you went behind the tree or house, or something else that is dependent upon the operators station, and I agree. But a recorder going dead is no one's fault - its dead. Find another recording if possible and log it. I wouldn't consider using someone else's recording as they are logging it for you. I respect all of the opinions here - different opinions and ideas help develop the hobby. We need to keep in mind this is a HOBBY - hobbies are supposed to be enjoyable. There are definitely rules and regs that must be followed, but I don’t think it's worthwhile to get caught up in WHOSE recording you use, what antenna you use, how you say your call sign, etc., etc. Let's just enjoy the hobby! Burden of proof of contact lies with the stations making the contact. Use of a recorder is OK (what I said), but relying on others to log your contact is not. Last time I worked AO-10 was Nov/Dec 2001 - QSL cards from OM5CM and F6BEG. Both CW QSOs. Best QSO/QSLs on AO-40. Found TA1D calling CQ(SSB) at 8 degrees with elevation decreasing fast. Called him on CW and he replied on CW. My only Turkey QSL. QSO/QSL with 4Z1WS Multitude of QSO/QSLs from Australia, New Zealand, and many many from Japan. Rare ones that were 3AM sleep interrupters. TZ6RD, 7P8NK On a good day, it was Europe in the AM, North/South American mid day and Japan, Australia etc. in the PM. Boy it was fun. Ran 4X20 turn helixs on 2.4 GHz, 11 turn helix on 435, and FT-847. Mike K9QHO, Indiana

You guys are making me all teary-eyed! I loved that bird, especially for all the "challenges" it presented. Mike, I still have the 10 gHz downconverter I built for that never-used mode :-( My first contacts were on 05 May 2001: W1BFN, KB2WQM (now KB2M), W7ID, N1JEZ, WL7BQM (first DX), and WC0Y--all in mode U/S. My last contact was K5VAS on 22 Nov 2003 using mode L/S. Later that weekend I took down my antennas to move to VK8. I took everything I needed to work AO-40 in Australia, including an 18" DSS dish with a dual-band feed, but by the time I moved and got into a penthouse apartment with a big deck looking north (why do you think I had to find a top floor with that view?), AO-40 died. If it hadn't been for the launch of Eagle (AO-51), I would have never been able to use that L/S gear. I used it dozens of times to talk to myself on AO-51 as it orbited over the Indian Ocean :-) I used to do the same thing on ISS packet. Hello to the group - My recorder battery died during a pass of AO-51 yesterday (2/5/2011) I think the pass was approximately 18:53 UTC - it was a mainly east coast pass. I made a contact with WP3T, I believe, which is why I rely so much on my recorder. Many of you know how bad I mess up calls so I may have the suffix of the call incorrect. I just failed to notice the battery was running low. If anyone may be able to help me out I would appreciate it... SO-67 and LOTW?

Hello all, wonder if any of you have come across this. In the FAQ for LOTW (very last item) there's a list of supported satellites. SO-67 is on the list. However when I want to sign the .adi that contains my SO-67 contacts I get: Error: Invalid SAT_NAME (SO-67) on line 22 My .adi is an export from HRD Log. Anyone have any ideas? 73 Doc KT3L

ARISSat 1 & Funcube Telemetry Question: DBPSK vs BPSK

Hi All, Just a quick clarification needed by me on the Telemetry format that is going to be used by ARISSat-1 and Funcube (& I guess the Funcube boards onboard UKube-1...) Lots of places are referring to it as BPSK1000, but I have seen references claiming it is DBPSK. Can someone clarify if it is Differential BPSK, or "just" plain old BPSK as used before, but at 1000 BPS, rather than 400 ? Reason for asking is that I have a USRP, and use gnuradio, along with the gnuradio-companion. That has DBPSK blocks built in, but pure BPSK would take a little more work (possibly just routing the output to a loopback soundcard, and then running decoding software) 73s Iain

APRS Digi Question

Hi All, I know this is generally a satellite specific list, but since a lot of you are APRS users, I am going to see if anyone can answer this question. I will try to keep it simple. Please email me if I don’t make sense. I recently put up a digi on my property (KD8KSN-1). I am using a Kenwood TM-271 (25w – lowest power setting), Diamond F22A 6.7db ground plane on a 1112ft hill, and a Kantronics Packet Communicator 3 Plus TNC. From what I can tell, everything seems to be working fine from the RF side. Here is the issue: On aprs.fi, when KD8KSN-1 is digipeated by station (eg) xx1xx, xx1xx shows up in KD8KSN-1’s “info bubble” as one of the stations who digi’d the most recent packet. (You can also view it by going into raw packets (http://aprs.fi/?c=raw&call=KD8KSN-1) and looking at what stations digi’d KD8KSN-1. Just in case you don’t know what this “info bubble” is I am referring to, follow this link http://aprs.fi/?call=a%2FKD8KSN-1 I am referring to the box in the middle of the screen with my digipeater’s status text, power/gain/HAAT/range.) Now, when I watch the TNC and the receive light comes on, then the transmit light comes on (which would indicate it is didgipeating a station), I monitor with the D7, and as soon as the TNC transmits, I receive a packet on the D7 with (eg) KB8TZE-9. I then immediately get on the computer, lookup KB8TZE-9 on aprs.fi, and according to his raw packets and “info bubble,” I am nowhere in the chain of digis that digipeated him. I have tried this with several different stations, and not once have a seen myself come up in anyone’s raw packets as a station that digipeated them. The *only* time I have seen KD8KSN-1 in the chain of digis that digipeated a station is when it has digipeated me (KD8KSN-7/-9). Me and my other APRS friend speculated that it might be due to the fact that I live in the country and don’t live close to an internet gateway, but I am able to send myself email messages without issues, and I am also aware of at least three gateways that I am very frequently digipeated by. I know this is probably not a huge issue. Having your call in someone’s raw packets or “info bubble” isn’t a big deal, but WHY its not working is what’s bugging me. Everyone else’s digi does this, so why isn’t mine? Any help would definitely be appreciated. Please feel free to ask me any questions if I am not making sense. My My . all of these great memories of long ago makes me suggest I have to hark back to my first Q on a satellite. That event that leaves you so high it takes a couple of day to join the rest of the human race. That Q was after designing and constructing a 2 meter SSB transverter, preamp and antennas Now it needs to be said that living in NE in 1965 and getting the bug to accomplish this is with out elmers or help of commericial equipment . I point that out because NE was the last state I needed to work WAS years later The HB 2 mtr preamp was a 7077 ceramic that was sweet as it could be. The HB 2 mtr transverter was a 6360 tube that also was a marvel back then. Naturally I needed a SSB HF rig to drive the transverter and that was an Hallicrafters HT-37 Oscar III had a 2 meter transponder with 50 KHz wide The uplink was on 146 MHz and the down link was on 144 MHz . During these day getting information about Ham satellite activity in NE was almost impossible We were able to learn the time and longitude that the bird was next crossing the equator. I took a school Globe, seperated the two halves of the globe, set the northern half on a board so I could rotate the globe to a index on the board That index was aligned with the longitude of the next pass . A wire also beginning at that index crossed over the globe to the correct location on the other side which represented the path about the globe for the bird. String knots tied to the wire at each location equaling about ten minutes flight represented time along the path. All of this 1965 effort for a 18 day battery to run the Oscar III 2 Mtr transponder. Then the newer birds each in it's own time with all the learning and enjoyment Along came the French Mode S Arsene, as I recall there were 4 Hams in the US that worked that bird Stations in FL , CA, NY and NE She was upside down and got to hot to last. Then the last HEO AO-40, Over 200 DXCC entities confirmed on satellite. All but one zone (34) via satellite confirmed WAS # 109 Enjoyment I have had plenty. I have also paid my share into the fund to build and launch AO-40 It was not cheap if you want what I wanted. The above makes me old with the old junk out in the shack 13 last Sept. a 40 minute , 108 MPH hail storm made 19 antennas in my back yard useless. My insurance Co has already spent over 50 grand on my place without getting into any Ham antennas. I am not sure I will match Dave or Dan's ability to wait for P3E and rebuild my earth station. February 6, 2011 To All RADIO AMATEURS BID: $ANS-037.03 OSCAR-11 REPORT 31 January 2011 This report covers the period from 31 December 2010 to 31 January 2011. During this time the satellite has been heard from 31 December 2010 to 10 January 2011, and from 21 January to 30 January . It is expected to switch-on again 10 February for ten days, and remain silent for the remainder of the month. Excellent signals have been reported from stations located around the world, and good copy obtained from decoded telemetry frames. The satellite is now transmitting during eclipses, although signals are weaker at those times. This indicates that there is still some capacity remaining in the battery. The on-board clock is now very stable. It gained eight seconds during January. The VHF beacon frequency is 145.826 MHz. AFSK FM ASCII Telemetry Reception reports have been received from Christian SWL-CHMY, Mike DK3WN, Campo PY5JAP, Ron WB0SOK and Horatio CX8AF. Many thanks for those and to everyone who posted reports on the satellite status website. At the present time, while OSCAR-11 is operating in a predictable way, I no longer need direct reports or files by e-mail. However, could all listeners continue to enter their reports on the general satellite status website. This is a very convenient and easy to use facility, which shows the current status of all the amateur satellites, and is of use to everyone. February 6, 2011 To All RADIO AMATEURS BID: $ANS-037.05 *1 SA AMSAT Announces SAiSAT A Journey Into Tomorrow This week SA AMSAT announced two new satellite initiatives. The first is a long-term research and development project called SAiSAT. The Southern Africa Amateur Radio Satellite Association (SA AMSAT) which is affiliated to other AMSAT groups around the world is pro- posing an exciting satellite project and is inviting the partici- pation of South African Universities and Universities of Technology in the development and construction of a completely South African Amateur Radio experimental satellite. The objective of this satellite is to demonstrate South Africa's ability to engineer a satellite, employing the latest technology, and new innovations. In addition to some feasibility projects for future commercial use. The aim of the project is to contribute to propelling South Africa into a world position as a technology resource. SAiSAT is based on the CubeSat satellite design. SAiSAT plans to use fold out panel a total of 24 in all that support solar panel steering in order to capture the maximum energy available from the sun. The rear of the solar panels is free for project use. They have the potential to house 24 projects depending on size. An additional research proposal is that the outer rim of each panel is fitted with pcb tracks in the form of a coil: + To generate additional power from the Earth's magnetic field. + To torque stabilise the satellite against the Earths magnetic field. + To give orientation data to resolve the attitude of the satellite. + Take additional unused power from the batteries and elevate the satellite into an every increasing orbit thus extending its use- fulness and orbital life. + Possible to create an 12 antenna arrary * Provide a steerable antenna array with gain, thus reducing the necessary radio frequency power needed to maintain contact with earth. * Provide a radio Doppler system on board so the satellite can confirm and report position, and supply the radial of interfering emissions. * Provide a vital radio redundancy feature from antenna failure. * Provide static charge data. * Provide residual atmospheric density readings SA AMSAT has issued an open invitation to tertiary institutions and individuals to participate in the project. A project meeting is scheduled on Friday 25 March ahead of the annual Space Symposium which will take place the next day. February 6, 2011 To All RADIO AMATEURS BID: $ANS-037.06 ARRL Announces Teachers Institute TI-2 Space Curriculum The ARRL Education Services Department has announced the 2011 schedule for the Teachers Institute on Wireless Technology (TI) workshop. Offered through the ARRL's Education & Technology Program, the Teachers Institute is a four-day, expenses paid, in-residence learning opportunity designed for motivated teachers and other school staff who want to learn more about wireless technology and bring that knowledge to their students. A variety of topics are covered during the TI, including basic wireless technology literacy, electronics, the science of radio, radio astronomy, how to bring space into the classroom, ham radio operation, introduction to microcontrollers and basic robotics. While participants do not need to have an Amateur Radio license to attend the basic TI sessions, one is required for the advanced (TI-2) session. TI-2 Space is sponsored by the Dayton Amateur Radio Association. The TI-2 Space curriculum focuses on the nuts and bolts of setting up and operating a satellite ground station. This serves as excellent preparation for a scheduled contact with the ISS through the Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) program. But it also provides instruction for continued use of satellites and other man made space assets to explore naturally generated signals, space and a variety of topics. Dates of the Institute are July 11-14, 2011. The application deadline is May 15, 2011. The course will be 4 days: the first half will be setting up and learning to operate the ground station, the second half will be practice making satellite contacts and instruction in using space borne assets in the classroom. Participants will receive all the equipment necessary to set up a basic satellite ground station. They will participate in an antenna building party (an activity they can duplicate back home with their students). Though participants need not hold an amateur radio license to enroll in all other sessions of the TI, to be considered for a seat in TI-2 Space, participants must possess at least a Technician class license at the time of application. Priority for attending the TI-2 Space session will first be given to teachers who are signed up for an ARISS contact; second, to TI graduate teachers who have completed an ARISS contact; third to TI graduates who want to learn more about bringing space related activities into their classrooms. Bruce, VE9QRP recently completed an internet bitstream concact with Paul, ZL3IN using an alpha-level release of Codec2. Bruce made a video of the conversation using the actual audio of the digital audio. Upcoming School Contacts An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact scheduled for Arsaniq School in Kangiqsujuaq, Wakeham Bay, Quebec, Canada on Monday, January 31 at 19:26 UTC was successful via telebridge station LU8YY in Argentina will handle the radio connection. Students have learned about the ISS through videos, the internet and guest speakers. Collège Joseph Chassigneux, located in Vinay, France, was completed on Tuesday, February 1 at 07:02 UTC. Through this activity, teachers hope to expose students from mostly rural villages to the outside world. In French class, students have written articles for the school magazine about life on the ISS as well as items about their preparations for the radio contact. They have learned technical terms in English, built CW circuits in Physics and have studied continents and countries in Geography. Amateur radio operators plan to discuss the technical aspects of the contact with the youth. An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact was completed with Buehl-Realschule Dornstadt in Dornstadt, Germany on Wednesday, February 2 at 07:32 UTC. Students have been introduced to wireless technology and have participated in related hands-on activities. In addition, workshops have been planned which will teach about the challenges faced in space travel. An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact was scheduled and completed for Adobe Bluffs Elementary School, San Diego, California on Thursday, February 3 at 17:12 UTC. Through projects and hands on activities, students have been learning about electromagnetic waves, astronomy and other space-related topics. 2. Paolo Nespoli Speaks with Marco da Melo Students via ARISS Istituto Comprensivo "Marco da Melo" in Mel, Belluno, Italy took part in an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Tuesday, January 25. Astronaut Paolo Nespoli, IZØJPA answered the students' 21 questions over two ISS passes and exchanged greetings with the audience. Nearly 250 students, teachers and visitors were in attendance for the contact. Regional television RAI and local media and newspapers covered the event. Video streamed over the internet received over 50 connections. The ARISS contact was the featured event of a curriculum covering telecommunications, electrophysics and telegraphy. 3. Successful ARISS Contact with Polish School On Wednesday, January 26, astronaut Cady Coleman, KC5ZTH participated in an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact with students, ages 15 - 18, from Liceum Ogolnoksztalcace Nr I im. Stanislawa Staszica in Ostrowiec Swietokrzyski, Poland. Coleman answered 20 space-related questions posed to her by the youth. Approximately 150 students, teachers and guests were on hand for this event which was covered by several media outlets. In addition to the required science curriculum, the school sponsors astronomy and amateur radio clubs as well as featured activities such as this ARISS contact, in order to stimulate students' scientific interests. 4. Nelson County Area Technology Center Sponsors ARISS Contact On Friday, January 28, on-orbit astronaut Cady Coleman, KC5ZTH took part in an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact with Foster Heights Elementary School students in Bardstown, Kentucky. Nelson County Area Technology Center students operated the amateur radio equipment during the pass during which Coleman answered 16 questions. An audience of approximately 100 people attended the event, including a representative from the Kentucky Department of Education. Television stations and newspapers covered the contact. Civitavecchia, Italy Students Radio ISS The primary school "Alessandro Cialdi" in Civitavecchia, Italy participated in an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Saturday, January 29. ESA astronaut Paolo Nespoli, IZ0JPA answered 17 questions posed by the students from "Autorità Portuale" in Civitavecchia (Port authority of Rome) where an audience of nearly 200 students, teachers, visitors and media gathered for the contact. Before the ISS call, ARISS mentor Francesco De Paolis, IK0WGF introduced the event with a presentation on the ARISS program. Regional and local media and newspapers covered the event and the video, streamed on the internet by AMSAT-Italia, received 60 connections. 6. AMSAT - ARISSat-1 Delivered to the ISS On January 27, ARISSat-1 was launched on Progress 41P and arrived at the ISS on Saturday, January 29. The satellite is expected to be deployed during a Russian EVA on February 16. Memories of OSCAR 10

I've been enjoying the posts regarding our last HEO satellite, AO-40. I was inactive while AO-40 was going strong, but the posts brought back memories of our first HEO, OSCAR 10, my first experience with satellites until a couple of years ago. You can't find much about the glory days of AO-10 on the web, but I remember them well. Passes lasted for 8 hours. Always Q5 copy everywhere in the huge footprint, very little QRM or QRN. I worked over 100 countries from 1983-85, but never got enough cards for DXCC. My rig was a Yaesu FT-726R with a Mirage D-1010 amp. It was 70cm uplink, 2 meters downlink. I attached the antennas to a small mast on my chimney. I had a surplus cavity bandpass filter that wiped away all the birdies; it was needed because I lived in EL49 in New Orleans. The antennas were small crossed-yagis (KLM?), circularly polarized, on separate booms. I can't recall the make or model. Also must have had a mast-mounted preamp and an az-el rotator, but I can't remember them. I got the tracking info from a program that ran on my Commodore 64 and printed it out on my Gorilla Banana printer. Those were halycon days, with AO-10 supposed to be just the beginning. The grand plan was to put up 3 linked ham sats in geosynchronous orbit, which would enable any ham to work any other ham anywhere on the globe 24-7. Will we ever see anything like that again? How did AO-10 compare with AO-40? There was a fire at my home and all my logs and QSL cards from those days were lost. If anyone out there happens to have an old AO-10 QSL card from me, I'd sure appreciate a copy. 73, Bill NZ5N

watering hole

Hello has it ever been suggested that we have a "unofficial" watering hole" of sorts, say on 20M? Where we can prearrange, make skeds, thrash out, critique, our on going satellite efforts. I know we have the AMSAT net on 14.282 every Sun afternoon. This would be a more real time on going communication where experiments and other efforts can be discusssed. AO40 contacts

Those days were unforgettable! I can remember far stations from Europe, such as the antarctic station 8J1RF, VK6XH, VK5DG, XE1MEX, VU2RM, etc., or speaking with Joe K5OE from which I have learnt a lot building the TPMs antennas. But which I can forgotten is getting up very early to work the AOS. Logging program/LOTW

Hello group I need advice and direction concerning logging programs and LOTW. Using WINLOG32 I uploaded 184 QSO's in to LOTW which resulted in 2 matches. Knowing that some of you have been doing the same and I have had QSO's with you; is the fact that Winlog32 does not provide for a "SAT name" location the reason for so few matches? There does not seem to be a way to add a "SAT name" blank to Winlog32, that I can figure out! Does anyone know a work-around and/or is there a logging program that is easier to use and adapt or is there a program that already has these perameters built in. Your help will be greatly appreciated, Marvin K5MLT

TH-F6A tip request

I got a surprise gift of a Kenwood TH-F6A and look forward to giving it a try on the satellites. I know there are a few owners on the list -- Drew, Patrick, others -- and wonder if folks have any tips to share (I've read through the eham reviews). I'm especially interested in experiences with speaker/mics and headsets, headphones with 2.5mm plugs, quality of after-market programming cables, etc. I'll typically be using the F6A as one of two radios -- the receiver for the easy sats -- and want to record passes while listening or operating. I took one of the xstals, put an eraser to it to get it in the cw passband. of AO7,and cut and keyed the B+ line to the final transistor,brought that out thru a jack to my hand pump,and worked cw! no chirps, just rock bound,but worked tons of qso's with that before getting my FT221 SSB/CW rig.where there is a will, there is a way, de Ellis WA1RKS

AO-7 Mode A anomaly

Has anyone experienced anything like this on AO-7 Mode A? Earlier today on pass 65777 ( AOS approx. 2207z) I was looking for my downlink signal shortly after my AOS. While searching for my downlink signal I could also hear a few other unidentifiable CW stations. I figured they were also looking for their downlink signal since it was in that part of the downlink passband where I usually find my downlink signal (29.452-29.454 MHz). I could finally identify one of the CW stations as W8TK. He kept sending his call and jumping around in frequency a little. I called him several times but to no avail. A few minutes later I heard a weak SSB station and heard the call WA7TFZ. I didn't hear anything else so I began calling CQ and had no replies for the remainder of the pass. I finally lost my downlink signal but still had a few minutes before the bird went over the horizon. I began tuning around and found 2 more CW stations one was W1MO and K7NJ this was about 2-3 minutes before the predicted LOS. They were high in the passband around 29.468 MHz. I could clearly copy K7NJ and he was calling CQ FOC. I copied the CW signals until just a little after the predicted LOS when they faded into the noise. I listened for several minutes after LOS and never heard any other signals. I thought that this was very strange for several reasons: 1. 4 new calls on AO7 Mode A ( Not a bad thing but very unlikely) 2. Only hearing stations shortly after AOS and just before LOS. 3. Stations operating high in the passband. 4. One station was calling CQ FOC. I started wondering if maybe I had a common window with both AO7 and VO52 since VO52s downlink overlaps AO7 mode A uplink. Threw this out real quick after seeing that VO52 was half a world away. I emailed W8TK and asked if he was on the satellite. He said that he doesn't have any equipment for bands higher than 10m and that he was on 20m CW chasing DX about that time. I also emailed W1MO but haven't heard back from him. I've played around with the numbers a bit but it doesn't appear to be a harmonic of one of the lower bands but maybe more like some oddball mixing product. I haven't ruled out something in my radio not working properly but have never heard anything like this before and only seemed to be present when the satellite was in view. 2401 MHZ Beacon usage request

Hello AMSAT-BB;......I am trying to determine if the W3HMS beacon on 2401MHZ is being use by the Satellite community located in South/Central PA. We have not received any reports for some time and will not continue to support it if not needed. It Is located in FM19qv (S/E of York PA.) It has been heard in MD and NJ. For those who are not familiar with it, it has been on 24/7 for >3 years and located at 1000ft on a 130ft tower. Its output is 1W to a RHCP Lindenblad Ant. Its CW Message contains 4 Telemetering channels and about 15 sec of solid carrier (then it repeat). A spread sheet decoder is available on request. The beacon is useful for Receive system testing and propagation analyzing etc. The 2401MHZ beacon is co-located with a 1296MHZ beacon and a 5760MHZ beacon. I hope that Amsat can make Fox the highest quality, longest lived Cubesat ever built. But a Cubesat in high altitude orbit will be very disappointing to most hams, only the big-gun ham stations will ever be able to work it. We need a larger satellite with a larger power budget, high gain antennas and an attitude control system to aim those antennas at the Earth. We need to build and launch multiple satellites so that a single failure will not be so devastating to the user community. Those of us who work in or near the space program are looking under every rock to find a flight opportunity to a high altitude orbit. Please don't sell your AO-40 gear just yet, I think that you will need it again someday. Dan Schultz N8FGV

CH-19 11 Meters

Hello alll, I would just like to see if there was anyone that would like to comment on someones childish coments over the air on the AO-51 this weekend. Being new at this I did have some feedback on my transmissions. I corrected the problem with some headphones. I am saying flat out that the "CH19 few channels down" and "11 Meters check in now" and " get a real radio" were unprofessional and certainly uncalled for. I doubt that the person making these comments will step up now, I just wanted to see if anyone had the guts to comment on this. I know that others heard this. The person guilty of this childish behaviour, at the time stated "Hey ----- So-67 in 4 hours" I was on that pass and made a couple contacts, but do to the different audio was unable to identify this child. I did hear some dead keys, may or may not have been directed towards me. This kind of thing is unacceptable to me and if I get the call sign of anyone doing these things I will report it. Kevin S. Hello Everyone, Clare, I certainly do miss AO-40, along with AO-13, and AO-10 :( Thanks for all the QSO's, & QSL's! Many friends were made via satellite! Has anything been heard from AO-10 lately? I knew it went into sleep mode for a long rest, but it would just show up again without notice. My satellite antennas are down, and I can't listen for it :( Floyd, AO-40 was used by many during it's short life. I have at least 50 DXCC confirmed from AO-40 QSO's! I just wonder what it would have been like, since more DX Peditions were inclined to take along a small dish and yagi, and be able to work DX via satellite. Mike, I remember the AO-40 - 24 GHz QSO's from the parking lot of Dayton Hamvention, they were a blast! Thank You for the 10 GHz terrestrial QSO last Summer too! Nice to see a lot of the oldtimers come out of the woodwork!! I'm guessing that over half of my over 6000 satellite contacts were on AO40. And except for a very small circle near Madagascar (my antipode), I was able to talk to the world...And I have a contact with Durbin... I agree with Peter, a donation to AMSAT DL is the best bet to get another HEO.. At 89 I need some help when it comes to antenna roof work, but manage to keep all of the shack operating full bore... Boy, that sounds familiar ! My first Oscar station was a Regency HR-2B FM rig with ONE crystal in the middle of the uplink band on 2 meters, keying the high-low power switch. You couldn't hear the low power but the 15 watts on high power made it fine. And the receivers were an HW-101 and Hallicrafters SX-117. Bought an AMECO preamp for HF, which helped out on 10 meters. That was good enough to work lots of stations, maybe a total of 600 QSO's on OScar 6 and 7! Then when the RS-10, 11 came along, I tried some mobile work using an ICOM 230, again only one frequency, keying the PTT line, no chirp, and Yaesu FT-301 for receiver. Larson 2 meter antenna and Hustler 10 meter antenna on the pickup. Worked quite a few QSO's that way, too! All CW only, of course on mode A. (See: http://map.find.com/hfest* ) Although there is no Hamfest showing in Orlando, there are some other good objects visible to mobile operators: - 147.730 recommended traveler repeater downtown - 147.120 recommended traveler repeater NW - 442.525 recommended traveler repeater NE - 443.525 voice repeater at the International Airport for HT travelers - Two winlink nodes on 145.07 - IRLP node 4904 near Executive Airport - 443.1375 D-star repeater in the Northwest - 443.625 D-star repeater downtown - 1291.3 D-star near Executive Airport - 1285 D-star repeater The other resource objects that might be useful for visitors could be: * HFEST-ORL showing the location, date and talk-in frequency * Object showing the Recommended Local Echolink node * Object showing the location of any HAM stores in the area * Any other important resources for visitors or locals Then on the day of the event, other useful information objects might be: * AMSAT chat channel frequency * ATV chat frequency * DX chat frequency, etc * Announcements about events and times Remember, there are now 8 models of APRS ham radios and many add-on kits that can flash this information to the mobile operator or HT on his front panel or heads-up display; and 3 of them can auto-tune instantly to the FREQ, TONE, and shift of any such object seen. This really provides the mobile operator traveling to a hamfest all the information he needs as he approaches the event. Such info and auto-tuning is also helpful in the dozens of cities, towns and repeaters they pass along the way to get there. With almost all repeaters these days having PL or CTCSS, it is hard to just play radio along the way. The APRS Frequency objects for radio front-panel-display were designed to solve this invisibility problem. Anyone with a TNC can put one of these LOCAL objects on the air. VERY close approach of CQ1 today

A. Kowalski few hours ago in the course of the "Catalina Sky Survey" with a 0.68-m Schmidt + CCD. The object was moving at roughly 6 "/min and it was of magnitude ~19. According to its absolute magnitude H=32 this is a very small object, in the order of 4-5 meters.Just few hours after his discovery, we have been able to follow-up this object using remotely a 0.35-m f/3.8 reflector + CCD of "Tzec Maun Observatory" in New Mexico. At the moment of our images (on February 04.46), "2011 CQ1" was moving at 23"/min and its magnitude was ~18.Here you can see our image (stacking of 20 unfiltered exposures, 10 seconds each). Hi Gang, The Orlando Hamcation is just a week away, and AMSAT will be there in force. We have a forum scheduled Saturday from 1:45 to 3:15, and this year it is INSIDE! I expect ARISSat-1 will be the main topic of discussion. We'll have live satellite demonstrations, ranging from simple handheld/portable operations, to fully automated systems. The ARISSat-1 engineering model will be on display, and on the air. I'll have a FUNcube Dongle Pro on display and in use. I'm also planning on having materials on hand for new members to build their own CJU 435 MHz antenna, for free as incentive to join and support AMSAT. To make this all happen, we need your help. Orlando has become AMSAT's busiest hamfest behind Dayton, and we need current members to assist in the booth. Yes. AO-24 was in a low inclination orbit. Probably a transfer orbit inclination of 2 -5 degrees. I recall the transponder output was up near 2450MHz. It was very high and had excellent coverage. I believe it failed because it went into a planned shutdown due to something like eclipse or temp etc. Unfortunately it never switched back on. While it was there it was very good. A bit low in the sky if you lived above or below 60N or 60S but nice and easy to track. Like AO-40 it was always in the southern sky from here. When we talk about 10 million to launch it's worth remembering that the approach that has shrunk usable satellites to 1-3U cubesats can also be applied to MEO or GTO / HEO sats. Arianespace may no longer be flying test flights, but Falcon 9 will go to GTO (and needs to be tested) as will the new Indian launcher. There are new satellites going en-mass to 20,000km too. A ride share with Galileo etc may be just as good. Why not a HEO?

Okay, usually I don't comment on the hot topics on AMSAT-BB. I prefer to comment on the technical questions and issues. Maybe work has me feeling feisty this morning, so here it comes :) Why not a HEO? I can think of about 15 million reasons...that's a reference to money, if you didn't catch it. A good debate can be enjoyable. I'm okay if the outcome is that we disagree as topics are discussed. But regarding another HEO, it's quite simple, as I see it: 1) We all want a HEO. 2) It doesn't look like we're going to be able to afford a HEO. Our best chance is for somebody to hit a $300M lottery and lay out the cash in one big chunk. Or, somebody hits the "launch lottery" such that we get a free ride (probability is about the same these days...) If you don't like the FM bids, vote with your radio's power button. Yes sir! Lot of used stuff around these days that will work just fine on the current birds as well as terrestrial HF/VHF/UHF work. I have a couple of FT-100D's that are 160 thru 6 meters plus 2 M and 70 CM all mode. I was using them to replace the FT-847, as well as using them for backup HF rigs. Those FT-100's and the IC-706 seem to be available used for reasonable prices if you shop around .. And a few IC-7000's are showing up, too. Nice little all-in-one radios. Folks who have not yet been on HF would be able to get some exposure, and possibly get interested enough to upgrade. Well, 50 years ago, used HF rigs such as Heathkits, WRL, Hallicrafters, etc.could be gotten pretty cheap, even for a 14 year old kid, I think I paid probably $60 or $70 for a transmitter and receiver that worked well enough to get on the air. Made my own antennas. I'm sorry I didn't bite the bullet and get a 70CM rig a long time ago. I bought probably 4 or 5 HF rigs while AO-10 and AO-13 were going strong and never got on AO-10 until it was on it's last legs. I saw a mention of an issue of folks not wanting to make a big investment in satellite stuff to work SSB/CW. ALL of the original ham satellites were SSB/CW birds. No FM. And most hams already had enough equipment to get started. The uplinks were on 2 meters or 70CM (that took a little more doing), the downlinks were on HF or 2 meters. Some of the RS birds where HF up and HF down, and HF up, 2 meters down. Interesting stuff! Most folks had HF gear to start off in ham radio. I did not have an HT until I was a ham for probably 20 years. Nowadays there is a LOT of VHF/UHF multi mode gear floating around the used market for reasonable prices. Also the antennas are available, sometimes for real cheap, or haul it away for free. Keep your eyes and ears open. You don't have to go to AES/HRO/M-squared/HyGain/Cushcraft and buy new stuff to work these birds. There are many old timers who gave up satellite work when AO-10 and AO-13 went away, and their stuff is sitting around gathering dust and rust. Hams are supposed to be resourceful and innovative! And I went and sold my FT-847 which was about the most expensive rig I ever bought! I had a couple hundred QSO's on AO-40, some new countries, etc. but the LOTW response on those was awful! Got some of them confirmed with real cards and a FEW on LOTW. Time for another HEO, that's for sure. Han IV rotor problem- solved

Greeting fellow sat-ops. A few weeks ago I posted about a problem I was having with my Ham IV rotor display not properly functioning, and received a number of very useful responses. I promised to report back. So, as I previously reported, although the rotor turned fine, the controller display was somewhat erratic but completely useless. I did the recommended troubleshooting, first of the controller (it was fine), then measuring resistance across certain rotor terminals. One should read approx 500 ohms across rotor terminals 3 and 7, and the sum of resistance across two other sets of terminals should equal 500. Well, I measured zero ohms for each measurement. To eliminate the cabling, I took the measurements again up on the tower with the rotor in place. Still got zero for all reads. Ok, so then came the heavy work. Got the rotor down, but now I was able to clean the terminals, corroded screws, etc, and got ok readings for everything. Oh well, since I had it down, I took it apart only to find this rotor that had been in the air for 20 yrs (and was used when I got it), looked absolutely pristine inside. The bearings were dry, however, and so repacked them. The infamous resistor was also pristine, and showed very little wear. So after a full clean up of the terminal strip and new screws, back up it went. Oh and perhaps the most important part. This time I ran 16 ga leads, 1 ft long, with round screw connectors stubbed out from the rotor’s terminal strip. This is because installed, it is almost impossible to reconnect all of the rotor cable wires to the strip. This rotor runs a good size 3 el HF yagi and my sat antennas. Unfortunately, the sat antennas made the whole thing top heavy and so had to dissemble the sat array. Anyway, finally got all put back together, powered it up, and …uggg… no display at all now. An hour later after running connectivity tests on the cable I found that a splice in underground conduit had gone bad. That fixed, all worked as it should. Unfortunately, because of the inability to connect all cable wires while the rotor was in place, some amount of up-weighting and lifting of the rotor was required in any case, but thoroughly checking connectivity of the rotor cable as had been suggested would have saved some time. I look back on this, as I tend to my still sore back, as a real learning experience and reminder to always look for the simplest problems first.
