LVB Tracker / 5500 rotor / USB-Serial Port coversion

I am struggling trying to establish a proper USB - Serial port conversion on my laptop. Can someone tell me which software is best for this conversion and what are the pitfalls. I have tried the FTDI Drivers as described in the LVB Tracker Box Manual without success. With so many LVB Trackers in use I am sure there is a way, but I have not found it yet. I may be doing something wrong during the installation of this software and I can not figure it out. Any suggestion will really be appreciated and tried. Newbe Knut / N6BNP SoCAL

Glen, Do note that starting this month, the AO51 team is keeping the main V/U crossband repeater constant but is doing weekly hanges of modes and operating patterns for the second, low power repeater. I personally will be trying the second QRP repeater when it is turned on to V/U FM next week. It is explained in the link. Lots of opportunities to experiment. BL11 Operation Tuesday - Thursday

Greetings, It looks like contacts from Hawaii are really possible via AO-51. On Sunday I made two contacts to northern California and today made a contact with AA5PK in San Angelo, Texas. We were both at around 1.5 degrees and almost 3600 miles apart. So I'm very happy with my modest IC-W32A & Arrow setup. I'm planning on operating on four passes over Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday as follows: Tuesday 9/14: AO-51 4:12 - 4:20 PM HST, 7:12 - 7:20 PM PDT, 0212 - 0220 9/15 UTC Wednesday 9/15 HO-68 9:14 - 9:25 AM HST, 12:14 - 12:25 PM PDT, 1914 - 1925 UTC Note: HO-68 shuts OFF at 1925 UTC AO-51 3:31 - 3:39 PM HST, 6:31 - 6:39 PM PDT, 0131 - 0139 9/16 UTC Thursday 9/16 HO-68 8:58 - 9:05 AM HST, 11:58 - 12:05 PM PDT, 1858 - 1905 UTC Note: HO-68 shuts OFF at 1905 UTC Hope to make some more contacts here in BL11 land (Diamond Head - Waikiki). 73's, Tom - KA6SIP

2010 AMSAT-NA Board of Directors election results

The 2010 AMSAT-NA Board of Directors election has been completed with the following results: Tom Clark, K3IO, 674 votes (Regular Member) Lou McFadin, W5DID, 655 votes (Regular Member) Gould Smith, WA4SXM, 523 votes (Regular Member) Tony Monteiro, AA2TX, 491 votes (Alternate Member) A total of 813 ballots were received. In accordance with the Bylaws of AMSAT-NA, those receiving the three highest number of votes are elected as regular members of the Board of Directors for the next 2 years, with the forth becoming an alternate to serve one year until the next election. Of course there are other websites where to report :-) Anyway, I found HO68 in the first part of the 19:00utc pass rather weak. Then it turned strong like always. Lot's of packet radio traffic. FM repeater worked fine. LA, EA, IK, PA, 9A stations. Mind the polarization ! For me: I need to change throughout the pass many times. (Left vs Right HCP). Wrong polarization: noise. Dot Lowe of Arrow Antennas

My XYL, Cori, and I are in Cheyenne WY for a few days. We were here earlier this year and were treated to a terrific tour of the Arrow Antennas shop by the owners, Al and Dot Lowe, who do everything involved with running the business from designing the equipment, machining the components, and kicking everything out the door. During our present visit, we thought we'd stop off at the Arrow Antennas shop to say hi. Unfortunately, Dot suffered a major heart attack recently, and the shop's operations are understandably shut down for the time being while she recuperates. 145.825, PL 67 Hz on the uplink, 435.675 down. It works just like SO-50, only with an occasional packet burst thrown in, and it's on a schedule instead having to turn it on. SSTV to be Activated on ISS

I saw this in the ARISS Status Report which is happening now. Waiting for the weekend news cycle would be too late ... SSTV to be Activated on ISS The Russian ISS crew members plan to activate Slow Scan Television (SSTV) on September 13 and 14. The activity should run from 12:00 - 16:00 UTC on both days. If you have no luck with the sub one buck crystal. I have a small number of made to order crystals for the Drake converter. Reduced height compared to the HC49U and 20pF to match the Drake oscillator. However, I believe you can run the Cal Amp with the original crystal. This gives an output somewhere around 123MHz. The original xtal will be a decent spec and 123MHz is good as most unmodified transceivers will not transmit into your converter. Thanks David G0MRF

Dear list, Does anyone have a 8.8125Mhz crystal they can part with? This does not seem to be a standard part for Mouser or Newark (not really surprising). I am converting a Cal. AO-51 from BL11 this afternoon

Greetings, I will be running portable from Hawaii, BL11, this afternoon. The equipment (arrow,IC-W32A & LNK-450 pre-amp) seemed to make the trip here OK. Saturday I was able to hear myself on AO-51 but didn't hear anyone else. The pass I'll be trying is: UTC: 9/13 0150 - 0159 PDT: 9/12 6:50 - 6:59 PM HST: 9/12 3:50 - 3:3:59 PM There are similar passes on Tues, Wed & Thursday this week. The HO-68 operating schedule doesn't look very promising this week for Hawaii. Next week (9/17 - 9/24) I'll try AO-51 from Kauai, BL02. Hope to make some contacts. 73's Tom - KA6SIP

Hi! I will give a presentation for the ThunderBird Amateur Radio Club at their monthly meeting at 7pm on Thursday, 16 September 2010. The club meets in the Snell Building on the south side of the Thunderbird School of Global Management campus. SatPC32 and rotor controller not working

It appears that my G6LVB controller is not driving the G5500 from SatPC32 V12b I am running WinXP ==> SatPC32 V12b ==> G6LVB interface ==> G5500 rotor. My rotor is not responding to SatPC32. I have successfully used the cmds in the G6LVB instructions with HyperTerminal to drive the rotor. SatPC32 does drive the FT847. I have toggled the SatPC32 screen R+/- without good results. I am using the FTDI USB with the 2.8.2.0 driver to virtual Com Port 6. As anyone had and solved this problem? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks and 73, Allen WB6RWU

Good morning from beautiful Colorado, I wanted to let everyone know that we made it into CO last evening and got settled in at the camp site after a L O N G trip from OH. I was able to get on SO50 once on the way out from EM08 while sitting at the gas pumps UNDER the pump roof (for lack of a better word). Thanks K0TWB, KB1RVT, K8YSE and WC7V for the QSOs - I was working half duplex with a 1/4 wave on the roof. We are on our way to Pike's Peak today (DM78), and should be up there between 1500z-2000z (approx). We will be in DN70 in a couple days, and there is also a very, very SLIGHT chance of a DN60 grid activation. We have heard that most pine trees have been cut down on that side of the park due to the pine beetle, so I am not even sure if we are planning on going over to that side. SATme for Blackberry

Just has a pleasant conversation with the author - Andy, K0SM/2 - on his satellite tracking program for the Blackberry, SATme. I do not own a Blackberry device, so I asked him what kinds of hurdles users were reporting. "I hear from John, LA2QAA, fairly often. He uses SATme on a Nokia phone for his portable ops, so you may be able to talk to him. I'm sure he wouldn't mind that I passed his name along. "There are two main "issues" that I have come across in the last few years: one is one imposed by the phone carriers, and the others is the non-standard implementations of the Java platform across devices. For example, all the US carriers (except Sprint, and most Blackberry devices) will restrict their low end devices not to allow access to the local file system and/or the Internet without a (sometimes several) thousand dollar certification fee. This is obviously prohibitive for a niche product like this. "The second issue is device fragmentation that can cause it not to run on some platforms. Here the issue becomes a problem of support from my perspective. There's really no way for me to keep up with all of these devices and do comprehensive testing on everything out there." Andy wrote SATme back when he was studying for his comprehensive exams in school as a way to earn some pocket change. The phone technology, though, has moved beyond the CLDC 2.0 spec for which this was designed, though there are several people using SATme on newer Blackberries and other smartphones, so it is still being made available. "It is nice to have a satellite tracking program that runs on my "free" phone ... and we hams are notoriously cheap," Andy chuckles. "The device fragmentation notwithstanding, the software has been stable for more than a year without any new issues cropping up ... I have two children now and only get on the satellites once or twice a year (FD usually), so I really don't have a pulse on the satellite community like I used to ... " Nice guy. Lake Superior Grid Expedition Wrapup

Our month long excursion around Lake Superior and points north came to an end on September 8th. We left on August 3d. The distance traveled was slightly over 5000 miles, working in 32 grids on 168 satellite passes. Northwest Ontario is really beautiful but it was difficult to find places to operate at times. The back roads are cut through forests of tall trees and it makes working the birds difficult to impossible. We tried to find lakes where the road was on the north side so we could see to the south. Usually there was some place to set up but not always. EO20 and EO31 were not planned but it worked out that we could operate from those grids. I doubt that EO20 has ever been activated on the birds. The equipment worked well however the 5 element two meter beam had a lot of vibration, especially on the dirt and gravel roads which caused two elements to break off. They were repaired with copper wire and later brass rod found at the Home Depot in Thunder Bay. The LVB tracker worked flawlessly and never lost its calibration. This was quite surprising considering that the rotor was running on a 500w inverter which was turned on and off hundreds of times. A serial port connection was used rather than the USB since I had an Edgeport 8 port serial to USB converter running the TS2000 and the Garmin V GPS. The antenna setup created conversation wherever we stopped. The locals wanted to know what it was for. Some guessed tracking bear, wolf, moose, etc. Others thought we were storm chasers. Another guessed we were doing Google street view mapping. Several hundred people were introduced to amateur radio satellite technology, and we got to chat with everyone and talk about what to see and where to camp. We spent most every night in a tent except for the very end of the trip when the weather turned very rainy. We had a great time in Isle Royale National Park backpacking in a true wilderness setting. There is a longer story about how we operated satellites there that will be published at a later date. Isle Royale is a very large island in Lake Superior where Moose and Wolves have priority over everybody else. We spent 5 days on the island. The Kenwood V7A, 7AH battery and ArrowII antenna were used for this portable operation. The plan is to enter all of the qso's into a spreadsheet and print labels. Several different qsl cards will be printed to represent the different states, Canada and perhaps Brockway Mountain and Isle Royale. There is no need to send your cards to me although an SASE would be fine. Everyone that worked me will receive cards for every contact whether requested or not. Documentation will be provided for any grid line boundary operation if there are any requests from VUCC card checkers. APRS data is available on www.aprs.fi in areas where there were digi's. I have gps track logs of the entire trip showing date/time/lat/long. I have recordings of most passes and also have recordings of AO-27 and AO-51 made from my home station which operated automatically during the trip. This speaks to the reliability of SatPC32, and the rotor interface and audio recorder designed by my son, KD8CAO. Thanks to everyone who worked me and provided encouragement during the trip. The TS2000 and antenna setup allowed me to work many more stations that could have been worked with an HT and an Arrow. There were many times where it was raining or dark which would have prevented operating outside. Once the antennas were pointed north, it didn't matter as we were inside the truck out of the elements. Finally, special thanks to the control teams of all of the satellites that kept things running smoothly, and to Alan Kung for having HO-68 on during the central North America daylight passes. If you are planning a vacation, consider taking some satellite equipment along. You'll enjoy being sought after and you'll have a new perspective on what it takes to do it. Would a "cantenna" work for a small portable setup? I'm trying to do this as cheaply as possible as AO-51 isn't in this mode very often. 73 Matt W5LL

Matt, I have been testing the U.S. Antenna Cantenna on my roof for several months now. I think it is an ok antenna. Even with a preamp, I'm not real impressed. If your overriding concern is to be stealth, it is probably a good compromise. You can use a cheap wi-fi directional antenna and they are available from most computer wharehouses at great prices. Please understand that we must be politically correct at ALL times. (Nuts) Of course I am kidding. I wanted to add my 2cents to this thread since I know you all and no one thinks anything nefarious is happening. With ALL volunteer organizations with our "HUGE" budgets, things get left behind or not even thought about. I, for one, believe that AMSAT does some things better than most other organizations and also leaves things to be desired in other areas. If we keep in mind the ultimate goal of satellite communications for "us" hams, we will keep our group moving in the right direction(no, not the political right). AO-7 footprint stretching (again)

Trying to stretch the footprint on AO-7 mode A is a most masochistic endeavor. I have been collaborating with JH1BCL PM96ng to my qth in CN87wk (Seattle). At 7719km a stretch for mode B, painfull for mode A. This evening I coppied a piece of Shige's call. If the sunspots ever get going there may be some propagation on 10M and which might help the downlink, shades of RS-15. Too bad the JA's can not operate 432. Hi! Now that John K8YSE is back home after a month or so on the road, it's time to say THANK YOU!!!! Thanks for all the grids, so many that may not have been on the air in many years - if ever. In looking through my log, preparing to send my QSL request to K8YSE, I logged QSOs with K8YSE and K8YSE/VE3 in a total of 22 different grids. All but 2 of those are new grids for my satellite log. If all of this matches up with John's log, this will probably be the motivation to finally write out a satellite VUCC application. Whenever you settle down at home, John, I'm sure there would be interest in hearing about your many thousands of miles motoring around Lake Superior and those very remote places in northwestern Ontario. Hi! It appears that many operators are lacking either or both of these grids in central New Mexico (I need both of them). I see these grids as unconfirmed on a few of the maps at K8YSE's satellite web page. These grids are not difficult to reach, being along the I-25 freeway that runs north to south through that state. Even though those two grids are some distance from me, I have been thinking about making a long run out to them and (probably) operating from both on the grid boundary between them in the next month or two. Possibly as part of another trip in that general direction, or maybe as a separate road trip just for these grids - I have not decided that yet. I'm not sure if I would add other grids in with these two if I go out there. That would depend on how much time I have for a drive out there. Comments? Interested in working those grids? Hello Matt There were a lot of converted MMDS converted downconverters from the the AO-40 (sobsob) days. I have a couple I dearly cling to, with hopes of a future HEO. There are some commercial ones from Keps, SSB http://www.ssbusa.com/modes.html . and few others. These can be a bit pricey. Try to find a AIDC 3731 downconverter by Transystems. These were converted and sold by K5GNA again back in the AO-40 (sobsob) days. They were an excellent dc and reasonably priced. Once a dc is procured a tv type 18 inch dish with a 5 turn helix feed in front of it makes a super antenna. A simple 8-16 turn helix is another option as well as yagi antennas used for wifi are effective. There a many ways to work this problem. If we had a HEO in the works this bb would be flooded with information, with lots of deals. Good luck with your efforts. Hello All, Shortly after posting this I realized I got something wrong--given the times of passes, mode changes are going to occur late in a given day (usually 2100-2330 UTC range), using UTC dates/times (not the very early hours of the next UTC day). So I have revised the schedule information below to reflect this. Schedule changes should happen Sunday evenings, Eastern Time (that hasn't changed). Another note--when the L-band uplink is active, most users report a better experience using a frequency tuned a few kHz "higher" than the published frequency of 1268.700 MHz. Suggestions For Full-duplex Radio?

I'm considering getting a full-duplex radio for working the linear birds. Since the IC-910H's been discontinued, and I'm not sure if the IC-9100 would be what I'm looking for, it appears the only one currently on the market is the Kenwood TS-2000. I'm using a Yaesu FT-817ND for FM but I've had limited success with it for SSB, which is why I'm looking at another radio. Does anyone have any suggestions or comments? All: Beginning this Thursday (9th) through the 18th, me and my family will be going to the Rocky Mountains of Colorado for our annual vacation. The primary focus of this trip will be to enjoy the scenery of the Rocky Mountain Park with a secondary focus on satellite operating. Satellites that will be operated include AO27, AO51, SO50 and HO68 if it is in FM that week. We will likely be in DN60/70, DM78/79, and possibly DM68/69 in Colorado (I know these grids are not unheard of, but hopefully they will be new-er to some of you guys), along with other possible grids on the trip out and back through IN, IL, MO and KS if I can get a mobile setup going (which is highly unlikely). I also plan to do at least 1-2 passes from atop Pike's Peak (DM78) during one of the first few days of the trip. It is hard to say at this point how frequently I will be on.... I would like to be on at least one pass per day that will have a good coverage of the US, but it will all depend on if I can get to suitable place to operate, weather, if I am not surrounded by 10,000 ft. peaks, etc. Worst case is I am on 1 pass during the trip, best case is I am on a lot more - we will have to wait and see. This will be my first "somewhat major" portable satellite operating, so please bare with me. =) Please watch my QRZ page for photos after the trip. LVB tracker issue

I had the USB port on my LVB go out after a voltage surge that took out my computer. I removed the USB board and put the chip in for serial control. With the DB9 connected to computer with real serial port(not USB/serial converter) the LVB will not always track right. I use for EME and SAT and sometimes it will just idle when it shold be tracking. Are there any port settings that I need to change or any advice when used via serial cable. Time for a repetion of considerate operating practice on FM satellites

Hi European operators, It looks like a repetion of the considerate operating practice at least here over Europe is in place. Sorry it is long :-) Here it is with minor modifications since last year: The first issue of this article is from 2000 - but with some modification it is still useful. I wrote this because the operating practice on the FM satellites by a few operators is less than productive. Unfortunately it makes it difficult to have real QSOs for the rest of us. The FM satellites function just like a FM repeater. They can accommodate one station at the time only. This makes it necessary for us to be very considerate, when we use these satellites. We have a number of satellites using frequency modulation operating at the moment. That is a good thing since they obviously attract a lot of new operators to the amateur satellite service. We have AO-51 and SO-50 both on all the time and AO-27 on for 6 to 7 minutes during daytime South to North passes. New to us are HO-68 and SO-67. The operating practice by a large number of us in Europe is appalling. People call on top of one another, whistling, and use repeater tones, do not allow a QSO to finish, call OHLA-OHLA, call CQ three to four times and include the locator and so on. Some seems to have the idea that it is their satellite and they therefor monopolize whole passes using excessive power to "drown" low power stations. The most popular satellite, AO-51, attracts quite a large crowd on every pass. If you want to hear examples of the above, try to listen to this very useful satellite during a weekend pass on 435.300 MHz plus minus Doppler. I do not pretend to have the perfect solution to these problems and I most certainly do not want to be called a policeman on the satellites - but a few gentleman agreements would make life (an overstatement - it is just a hobby) a lot easier for all of us. The golden rule - do not transmit if you can not hear the downlink, is not known by some stations. I have personally called a lot of stations, where my downlink signal has been very good - but the station called did not answer - or asked for the call again several times - but gave a 59 report. In my humble opinion we should adhere to some simple rules, which I will put forward here: Calling "CQ satellite" 3 - 4 or more times and give the call and the full locator at the same time is non-productive. It simply takes too long time. Experienced operators easily pick out new stations using a short CQ call. It is not really necessary to call CQ - just give your call. Considerate operating practice allows a QSO to finish. Many operators on the FM satellites do not adhere to this. You very often find a station calling on top of a running QSO, which makes the QSO take much longer time than necessary. Often it is because the QSO takes a long time, which leads to the next "rule". Make the QSO short when the satellite is busy. Valid QSO's just need to exchange calls and signal report. That is it. You do not need locator or operator name. If there is very little traffic OK go ahead and talk about anything - but not when the satellite is busy. Here in Europe we also have the habit of asking for the full lokator. I have tried to avoid that, but I have failed in this respect. For a terrestrial QSO or in a contest you need the full lokator - but not for a satellite QSO. A considerate operator will make one QSO per pass. If you are an experienced operator, who has made a lot of contacts before - limit your contacts to new stations. Do not use the FM satellites to elaborate on the weather situation in your local area, when the satellite is busy. Give priority to portable and mobile stations if they can hear the satellite. Give DX stations (rare calls) a chance to get through. I have just witnessed a JY4 station being "drowned" by local QSO's. JY was new to me even if I started satellite work in 1992. If someone is really annoying - don't try to block their signal - try to send them a polite e-mail especially if they are from your own country. Also respect if people want to use their own native language. It is perfectly OK to talk Danish, German, Russian or any other language, as long as they do not carry on for many minutes. Do not talk very fast. It will not help. Remember we have different languages and use phonetics. Look at your satellite-tracking program in order to avoid calling stations that are out of the footprint. If you are a newcomer to satellites try to use them on a weekday morning. QRM from non-radio amateurs and non-satellite radio amateurs. Over the years I have heard taxi drivers in Spain, music from Arabic countries, telephone conversations in Russian - Danish, Dutch, German, Italian, Spanish (continue the list) radio amateurs using the uplink frequencies for local calls, packet transmissions from Siberia - over the FM satellites. Some of these problems with other radio amateurs can be solved if you have the calls. Just send the radio amateur a mail and ask them politely to stop the transmission. I have had good experiences with radio amateurs in Denmark and other countries in Europe. Approaching your local authorities can perhaps solve a number of these problems with misuse of the frequencies. When the offender is in a foreign country it is the only way to deal with this. Use your national radio amateur organization - that is one of the reasons for their existence. Finishing remarks. The FM satellites are a great asset to our hobby since they attract a lot of new operators. A big number of these new operators move to the other satellites and become potential supporters of AMSAT. All, For those of you who have not already invested in a digital voice recorder for recording your hand-held satellite ops (highly recommended), I ran across the Sanyo Digital Voice Recorder - ICR-FP600D at eCost for only $12.99 + S&H (refurb). The only downside might be that this model does not have USB connectivity, rather audio is stored on an SD card (1GB SD card is included according to the description, but some other places selling this model have reported that this model doesn't come with the SD card...), which can be removed and inserted into a PC SD card reader for transferring the files to your computer. I encountered a guy this morning that wanted to know if AO-10 had an APRS beacon (see http://forums.qrz.com/showthread.php?t=262274 for the whole story). I checked Amsat and it does not show any indication of APRS. I have never had any sort of experience with AO-10, so I thought I could get a good answer here. It's not the ISS, it's not NO-44 - I know a couple of other sats use 145.825MHz but none of them seem to fit the bill either. Gordon MM0YEQ
