First off the crew is very busy on the ISS and they simply may not have the time to just pick up the microphone and talk. Also, one needs to be aware of their normal daily schedule. I have listed below the constraints that we at ARISS have to follow in order to schedule the school contacts. Hopefully this will help you better schedule your opportunities. Typical daily schedule Wakeup to Workday start= 1.5 hours Workday start to Workday end=12 hours Workday end to Sleep= 2 hours Sleep to wakeup= 8.5 hours The crew's usual waking period is 0730 - 1930 UTC. The most common times to find a crew member making casual periods are about one hour after waking and before sleeping, when they have personal time. They're usually free most of the weekend, as well. SSTV events are not that often. So please check out https://www.ariss.org/ for the latest information or watch for the ARISS announcements. And don’t forget that the packet system is active. As always, if there is an EVA, a docking, or an undocking; the ARISS radios are turned off as part of the safety protocol. ARISS News Release No. 23-47 Dave Jordan, AA4KN ARISS PR aa4kn(a)amsat.org FORIMMEDIATE RELEASE Message to US Educators Amateur Radio on theInternational Space Station Contact Opportunity Call for Proposals New Proposal Window is October 1, 2023 – November 10, 2023 September25, 2023 --- The Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS)Program is seeking formal and informal education institutions andorganizations, individually or working together, to host an Amateur Radiocontact with a crew member on board the ISS. ARISS anticipates that the contact would be held between July 1, 2024and December 31, 2024. Crew scheduling and ISS orbits will determine theexact contact dates. To maximize these radio contact opportunities, ARISS islooking for organizations that will draw large numbers of participants andintegrate the contact into a well-developed education plan. Thedeadline to submit a proposal is November 10, 2023. Proposalinformation and more details such as expectations, proposal guidelines and theproposal form can be found at www.ariss.org.An ARISS Introductory Webinar session will be held on October 5 2023 at 7 PMET. The Eventbrite link to sign up is: https://ariss-proposal-webinar-fall-2023.eventbrite.com The Opportunity Crewmembers aboard the International Space Station will participate in scheduledAmateur Radio contacts. These radio contacts are approximately 10 minutes inlength and allow students to interact with the astronauts through aquestion-and-answer session. AnARISS contact is a voice-only communication opportunity via Amateur Radiobetween astronauts and cosmonauts aboard the space station and classrooms andcommunities. ARISS contacts afford education audiences the opportunity to learnfirsthand from astronauts what it is like to live and work in space and tolearn about space research conducted on the ISS. Students also will have anopportunity to learn about satellite communication, wireless technology, andradio science. Because of the nature of human spaceflight and the complexity ofscheduling activities aboard the ISS, organizations must demonstrateflexibility to accommodate changes in dates and times of the radio contact. AmateurRadio organizations around the world with the support of NASA and spaceagencies in Russia, Canada, Japan and Europe present educational organizationswith this opportunity. The ham radio organizations’ volunteer efforts providethe equipment and operational support to enable communication between crew on theISS and students around the world using Amateur Radio.
