I've been running an FT857 as TX and FT817 for my RX with the Elk and a splitter cable from the 817's external audio to feed my headset and a digital recorder. The audio from the 817 failed in between passes yesterday, so I've had to swap the two rigs; the 817 is now the TX. Its lower power output did fine getting me into the satellites (even AO-91!), but I lost a noticeable amount on the front and back end of each pass, especially RS-44 which has always been a problem for me anyway. But I'm still on the air which is the main thing. I had just repaired the hand PTT switch in the headset yesterday, so the score was one win and one loss on the day! Today's grids were DK34 on the midday AO-91 pass which I wasn't expecting to make. I got on from DK25 on the late afternoon and early evening passes, and we crossed into DK15 in time for one XW-2A pass. Tomorrow at midday, we'll be hitting another quad grid point about the time of the AO-91 pass that'll start here around 1850Z when we'll be in one of these four: DK05, DK06, CK95, or CK96. Of course, we could cross into a second grid during the pass. The ship's GPS output is recorded minute by minute, plus I have my own handheld Garmin GPS, so I'll keep a close watch on our location for that pass in particular. Late afternoon and early evening will have me on from CK96. We should cross into CK86 around 26/0200Z; our local time is currently GMT -7, so there should be two or three passes available for that grid. 73/Jim, ND9M

The story began with a bit of detail on early space crews’ heavy workloads and needing time off. The writer moved to now, with space crews continuing to be more productive when schedules include relaxing—with making music being quite popular. The story cited the importance of ham radio as an engaging onboard leisure activity, as Doug Wheelock realized during his 2010 ISS mission. Speaking about the myriad of radio signals he heard from Earth’s ham operators, Doug said, “That started a trend for me where I made thousands of contacts across the world. That really became part of my connection back to the planet.” Referring to deep space missions, he said, “I can’t imagine doing a long-duration mission without that connection to the planet. Today's grid ops were from DK63 on AO-91's midday pass, DK53 and DK54 on XW-2C/D/F, RS-44/CW and CAS-4A. Grids for tomorrow, Sat 4/24, should be DK25 and DK15, both in the late afternoon and evening. We have another time change tonight (GMT-7) which puts AO-91 out of reach at midday. In January 2017 I received a telebridge contact he did with a Belgian school where he spoke French. I luckily found an international student originally from France in Raleigh who did live translation of the contact for me. ARISS News Release No. 21-24 Dave Jordan, AA4KN ARISS PR aa4kn(a)amsat.org FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ARISS Contact Scheduled for Students at St Margaret’s School Melbourne, Australia April 22, 2021—Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) has received schedule confirmation for an ARISS radio contact with astronauts. ARISS is the group that puts together special amateur radio contacts between students around the globe and crew members with ham radio licenses on the International Space Station (ISS). This will be a telebridge contact via amateur radio and students will take turns asking their questions of Astronaut Shannon Walker, amateur radio call sign KD5DXB. English is the language that will be used for this contact. Both onsite and remote access will be provided to the student body at the time of the contact per Covid-19 guidelines. The downlink frequency for this contact is 145.800 MHZ and may be heard by listeners that are within the ISS-footprint that also encompasses the ARISS radio telebridge station. The ARISS team in Casale Monferrato, Italy will use call sign IK1SLD to serve as the ARISS relay amateur radio ground station. The ARISS radio contact is scheduled for April 26, 2021 at 8:12 pm AEST (Melbourne), (10:12 UTC, 6:12 am EDT, 5:12 am CDT, 4:12 am MDT and 3:12 am PDT). St. Margaret’s School (host school) and Berwick Grammar School serve about 900 students from Preparatory to Year 12. St Margaret’s School includes a curriculum on Space and Astronomy for students in Year 8 and 9. Year 9 students are also learning basic electric circuits. Students have also participated in NASA’s Girl’s School Alliance, which included a trip to NASA facilities. Both schools include in their STEM program class activities that are a part of their G’Day Space Program enabling participating students to visit the Kennedy Space Center (and watch a rocket launch). Their STEM program also enables students (Physics class) in Year 11 to work with Arduinos, and build electrical circuits. The School has also added recent courses on amateur radio communication and foxhunting (radio directional finding) activities.
