Zugriffsverletzung error in SatPC32

Is anyone seeing the error "Zugriffsverletzung" or (accessviolation) in SatPC32 when they d/l keps? I'm seeing it on two different computers. It started at the same time, a few days ago. I can work out of it by closing and opening SatPC32 and sometime having to replace the standart.sat file in the process. 73 Jeff kb2m

Just set up new computer, new GS232, new SatPC32, old G5400B. Managed to get SatPC32 to talk to ServerSDX and get it to talk to the GS232 and calibrated the rotors. Where in SatPC32 or ServerSDX does it show me the current position of the rotors?

Hi all, I have listened to AO-85 transponder on its two last passes over Europe. Equipment is an Arrow antenna, FT-817ND for RX and FT-2D for TX. The signal is very good, peaking S9+ on the last overhead pass, and usually S7 or so (for comparison, SO-50 is usually S0 and peaks S1 or S2 sometimes). However, the transponder is such a big mess. Many stations are overmodulating the receiver and are in fact very difficult to copy. Everybody stepping on each other's QSOs and people calling CQ without listening. Hi Is the Fox-1A open for use? it was my understanding that it was going to take between 2 days to 2 weeks to commission the new satellite and not to be used during this period. Listening to night the satellite pass starting at 20:24 the satellite is taking a hammering with stations from all over Europe I don't think many if any QSO's took place. 73 Keith GU6EFB

Hello-With the new Chinese satellites and now Fox. There is a bewildering and confusing amount of information. Fox is also called AO-85 and grace 2. For the "digitally challenged" is there one place where all the basic information Keps, Doppler.sqf etc. Can be found? With "simple" directions, for simple people. On occasion I have inquired to several of you for assistance (thanks Glenn). Wanting to be independent of that process do we have a "watering hole" where we can go. 73 digitally challenged Bob W7LRD

Drew, Quick question regarding the 67.hz tone.. Should I program a channel with the tone at 435.170 or 435.180? It would seem that at AOS the bird will hear it better at .170 vs. .180. One thing that bears repeating, or perhaps has not been said terribly explicitly. The issue with decoding low speed data via the audio out of a "regular radio" is the LOW frequencies not the high. You need to be sure that the 9600 baud output does not have a low pass filter even if it can pass light on the high end. We need down to only a few 10s of Hz. Some radios work one way, some the other. Nearly all will filter out low frequencies on the normal audio output. Check your manual. I have a TS2000, but I don't remember the specs on 9600 baud out. I have used SDR for my testing. And another comment for another person re HDSDR and FoxTLM: I have a very slow CPU in my shack. It can't deal with FoxTLM running its own SDR at all. I attempted to decode the Fox-1A telemetry on 2 passes over Arizona today (approx. 0130 and 0300 UTC) using my Kenwood TS-2000 without success. I configured it for 9600 packet operation, monitored the audio out of ACC2 connector and could see over 20 Khz of audio bandwidth using software based audio spectrum analyzer. Audio response looked good from 0 to 20 KHz so I thought I would be good to go. Nope. I fed audio into 2 different sound card devices - one being the RigBlastger Advantage set to 48 KHz sample rate and the other audio device being my Laptop's built in sound card mic input set to 48K and 96K on different attempts. Audio levels were adjusted so as not to be excessive and sounded clean when played back through the speaker. When attempting to decode, I could see a very nice eye pattern in the telemetry decode software but the data square waves were pointy looking as if some high frequency filtering was being applied to them. I' not conclusively saying the TS-2000 won't work but I did everything right and tested as thoroughly as possible prior to the actual satellite passes with no success. I'll try again and see if I missed something and report back. What DID work for me was decoding the signal via SDR. In this case It was an RTL-SDR dongle in direct sampling mode connected to the 10.695 Mhz IF of the TS-2000. HDSDR was used with output bandwidth set to 96 Khz. Audio was piped to Fox telemetry decoder via VB Virtual Audio Cable software. Brad, KG7NXH

Hello Steve, The only hardware/SDR supported natively by Foxtelem 1.0 is FCDP or FCDPplus. For other SDRs, you have to use something like SDR#, HDSDR, SDR-Radio V2, to decode the audio (FM,about 12-15kHz wide,audio filtering OFF); ouput that audio to a virtual audio cable, then set up Foxtelem to use that virtual audio cable as input. It works, both live and with recordings, both slow and high speed. Bob, It seems unlikely that a small movement in the filter length would make such a dramatic difference. It's possible it reduced the load on your CPU, but that also seems unlikely. A slow computer usually misses audio first because it can not keep up with the sound card. That is why we track missed audio at the bottom of the window. So this could have been a coincidence? But maybe not. We left the filter controls on the program for just this sort of experimentation. Hello, new poster to this list. Using a handheld transceiver and a dual-band vertical on an outside mast, I heard the AO-85 downlink starting at 11:15UTC Oct. 9 as it passed over the Sea of Japan. Signals ranged from full quieting to QSB due to what I believe to be the sat's motion in space (rotating at about 10 rpm?). Do think uplink frequencies seem to be on, or are there adjustments that need to be made? AOS 1 - 435.170AOS 2 - 435.175Max L - 435.180LOS 1 - 435-185LOS 2 - 435.190 I find using the FT-60R challenging. The pass over central PA (50 degree) at 10:08 UTCwas strong, heard KC4LE, N8MH, KA4H, and others, but only had one station answermy call in FN10. LoonW3MAT

FoxTelem Tips

If you are attempting to decode Fox-1A in IQ mode with Find Signal enabled, then it will also search for signals from Fox-1Cliff and Fox-1D. But that is a waste of time at the moment :) You can fix that by removing the files from the spacecraft directory. You only need to move the files that end in .dat. Hi All, On the 10utc pass this morning, while the transponder was on and in use: I learned that reducing the width of the cutoff filter in Foxtelem program made it so I could copy the subaudible telemetry packets with the Funcube Dongle Pro. Reducing from the default 200 Hz to about 180 or 175 seemed to work here. It shows up as a decent eye pattern after that. Another FYI-When playing back an IQ recording via SDR#, it seems a bit more forgiving, working well around 175-200. Suggest folks experiment for best copy! Share hints here, please! 73, Mark L. All, We will leave the transponder running until about 0000Z 10Oct. Feel free to try it. A couple of notes: If the downlink isn't on, a few seconds of 67 Hz tone will turn it on. Narrow FM may help with the downlink audio levels if you find it difficult to hear. You may find it takes a little more gain on the uplink than expected. I encourage users to try their handheld yagis, remember to twist for polarity, listening full duplex to peak your uplink. During this time, the low speed data will still be active alongside your voice downlink, so ground stations are encouraged to continue submitting that to the server. 73, Drew KO4MA

Using AO-85 Transponder

I attempted two passes of AO-85 from DO20 after Jerry's email regarding activation of the transponder. During the first attempt with an Alinco HT at 0447 UTC I didn't get into the bird (approx 4 watts into an Arrow antenna). I was, however, able to copy AC0RA for most of the latter half of the pass. I tried again at 0629 UTC using 20 watts TX power on an FT-857 (and the Arrow). This time I was able to get into the sat from within a degree or two of AOS to about 6 degrees near LOS. It took a fair bit of playing with the TX frequency and antenna polarization. Unfortunately nobody else was on :-( One thing I noticed on both passes was that I had to tune my RX frequency down by 5 KHz during the last quarter of the pass. Regards, Bill VE6WK

An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Sekolah Kebangsaan Taman Tun Dr Ismail (1), Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on 09 Oct. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 08:00 UTC. It is recommended that you start listening approximately 10 minutes before this time.The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between OR4ISS and 9M2RPN. The contact should be audible over Malaysia and adjacent areas. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. Fox-1A today...

Hi! It was fun to see the launch this morning on NASA TV, even though there were too many clouds around the launch site to let me see any of the launch from outside my house here in the Phoenix area. Then I loaded the FoxTelem software on my Windows 10 tablets during the day at my office (along with Java), along with using my FUNcube Dongle Pro+ instead of my SDRplay SDR receiver, and tried copying some telemetry on a couple of passes tonight. The first pass, just after 0120 UTC, was a 13-degree pass here. I copied the voice announcement about the satellite being in safe mode, and a couple of data packets. I did not have Upload to Server selected (who reads the manual, when there's a new satellite to hear?!). I also ran HDSDR during this pass, so I could make an RF recording at the same time. I was able to play the HDSDR RF recording in FoxTelem to get my two data packets up to the server. The pass just after 0300 UTC was the best of the passes tonight. Again, FoxTelem and HDSDR on the tablet, and a 57-degree pass. For this pass, the voice announcement wasn't saying anything about safe mode, but I only copied one data packet. This time, it was uploaded to the server automagically. HDSDR made an RF recording. This time, the CPU on my 1 GB RAM 8-inch tablet was pegged at a few points in the pass. This leads me to believe I'm OK with either FoxTelem or HDSDR, but not both. HDSDR can make the RF recording in real time, then I can just play it in FoxTelem without needing to deal with virtual audio cables or (for some computers) Stereo Mix to pass the audio from one program to the other. I had one more shallow pass, around 0448 UTC, with a maximum elevation of 8 degrees. After seeing that the transponder was activated until 1000 UTC, I left the SDR stuff inside, and took a couple of HTs outside with me (KG-UV9D, KG-UV8D) with my Elk antenna. I heard the voice announcements every couple of minutes, but never heard anyone through the satellite during this pass. I had the KG-UV9D connected to the Elk, and an audio splitter to feed an earpiece and my Sony audio recorder. Since I was not able to hear myself - or anyone else - talking through the satellite, I did not connect the KG-UV8D to the antenna. That will come soon enough, hopefully - along with a few other radios that don't work full-duplex with SO-50, but may work fine with Fox-1A that way. The two RF recordings from the earlier passes, the MP3 audio recording from the late pass, and lots of photos and screengrabs were uploaded to my Dropbox space. Some of the photos show the settings I used in FoxTelem and HDSDR. Those files are located at: http://dropbox.wd9ewk.net/ Look for the folder "20151009-AO85_Fox1A" for these files. (refresh the page or hit F5, if my Dropbox public folders don't come up straight away) You can run both FoxTelem and HDSDR at the same time, provided they use the same center/LO frequency and HDSDR has an input bandwidth of 192000 (192 kHz) from the FUNcube Dongle Pro+. A computer with more CPU horsepower should not have issues with these two programs running at the same time, but the Windows 10 tablets may have occasional challenges. Thanks to Chris Thompson for quickly answering my e-mail question about the bandwidth FoxTelem uses when receiving data from a FUNcube Dongle Pro+! I have previously run the FUNcube Dashboard and HDSDR at the same time, as long as I kept the two programs in sync with the same center frequency and input bandwidth. This was a great day for AMSAT, and for satellite operators around the world. Almost 6 years to the day the AMSAT Fox project was unveiled at the 2009 AMSAT Space Symposium in Baltimore (that happened on 10 October 2009 during the annual general meeting), we now have the first of a series of Fox-1 satellites in orbit. Some have even been able to talk through the satellite, with many more hearing the voice announcements and copying telemetry. Fox-1A Telemetry Results using TS-2000

I've been reading this list for a while, decided it's about time I posted something. I attempted to decode the Fox-1A telemetry on 2 passes over Arizona today (approx. 0130 and 0300 UTC) using my Kenwood TS-2000 without success. I configured it for 9600 packet operation, monitored the audio out of ACC2 connector and could see over 20 Khz of audio bandwidth using software based audio spectrum analyzer. Audio response looked good from 0 to 20 KHz so I thought I would be good to go. Nope. I fed audio into 2 different sound card devices - one being the RigBlastger Advantage set to 48 KHz sample rate and the other audio device being my Laptop's built in sound card mic input set to 48K and 96K on different attempts. Audio levels were adjusted so as not to be excessive and sounded clean when played back through the speaker. When attempting to decode, I could see a very nice eye pattern in the telemetry decode software but the data square waves were pointy looking as if some high frequency filtering was being applied to them. I' not conclusively saying the TS-2000 won't work but I did everything right and tested as thoroughly as possible prior to the actual satellite passes with no success. I'll try again and see if I missed something and report back. What DID work for me was decoding the signal via SDR. In this case It was an RTL-SDR dongle in direct sampling mode connected to the 10.695 Mhz IF of the TS-2000. HDSDR was used with output bandwidth set to 96 Khz. Audio was piped to Fox telemetry decoder via VB Virtual Audio Cable software. Brad, KG7NXH

Does AMSAT want AO-85 decoded frames after the fact?

General question for those at AMSAT watching the data come in on the server. Are frames decoded after the fact useful to you guys, or does it just confuse the servers and mess up time stamps? I've been messing around with my GNU radio setup and have low speed mode pretty much figured out. For the high speed mode pass earlier, I got nice strong signal but failed to decode. Pretty sure thats all my fault and I need to go back and tweak my flowgraphs. I did make a raw IQ recording of the pass so that I can go back and play around with GNU Radio until I get high speed mode decoding on FoxTelem. So the question is, while I'm messing around with that would you prefer that I upload to the server or not? Eventually I hope to dig out the missed frames (they're in there on my hard drive, I just need to coax them out!), but I don't want to muddle up the time stamps on the AMSAT Server. Are the telemetry frames uniquely coded in some way that you can tell that I uploaded it 4 hours after it was overhead (like when I upload sequence number 12, and everyone else is on sequence number 482? for example)? Or are the timestamps based on the receiving computer's clock, and I should be sure to uncheck the 'upload to server' block when I go back to play with IQ recordings so as not to inject false timestamps to the server? Installing Sat Telem decoding such as FoxTelem.exe

Among others, today I installed FoxTelem.exe and XW2a.exe for decoding telemetry from recent launches. Both, when run, display a familiar Error-Burp about an "mschrt20.ocx" being missing or not registered. Per the install directions on the FoxTelem page, I followed the link to install VBrun. Having done that, I got the same error. I followed a link from that to the M/S Visual-Studio page and downloaded/installed that. Which, BTW, took 30 minutes. After sys re-start, STILL the same runtime error about missing OCX file. Search of ALL hard drives here and the OCX file is not at my place. First impressions of Fox-1A/AO-85/Grace2

>From EM12 Oct 8-9, 2015; 2348 UTC pass 2.8 degrees max elevation. HT and Arrow antenna, Satellite showed up on time and could be heard despite low elevation and obstacles. 0124 UTC pass 60 degrees. HT and Elk antenna, Signal went from full quieting to lots of noise. Limited observation is that the spin/tumble rate must be rather fast. I am sure it will take a bit for the magnetic stabilization to get a hold of the magnetic lines of force and stabilize the cube. First impression is the deep fades will be reminiscent of working LituanicaSat-1/LO-78 which had deep nulls. The pre-launch Keps seemed pretty accurate at least close enough for FM work. Looking forward to the real thing. Just curious and so I can characterize the orbit to some folks who expressed interest, What level of inclination does AO-85 have? It seems by just looking at a depiction on a map of over 80 degrees or am I observing wrong. Anyway, big congrats to Barry, Jerry and the whole Fox design/implementation team for a wonderful job well done. Fox has got me reinvigorated. Tom Schuessler, N5HYP

Fox-1A Telemetry Today

I managed to get about 11 packets of data today on Fox-1! Im using HDSDR feeding into fox tlm program. As far as I can tell all the telemetry looks good. And nice to see the transponder turned on soon! Spent most of my day today setting up sdr and tweaking the program to getting decodes on fox. FoxTelem and Java

I've got two Win7 (64 bit) computers here that already had Java 8 installed, but on both when I tried to run FoxTelem.exe it said that I didn't have Java and offered a link where I could download it. However, double-clicking on FoxTelem.jar seems to work just fine. Just thought I'd share that in case someone else runs into it. Just went out to the driveway (EM72) to listen to Fox-1A fly over on a hand-pointed Arrow antenna. Great to hear it on-orbit. Didn't find any decoded telemetry on the "inside" computer (using an omni) when I came back in. 73, David, ky7dr

I saw the "Eye" mentioned in the manual a few times. but the entire pass, to elevation about 50 degrees, never once decoded anything. I selected the FCDP+ from the pull-down. That defaulted to 192K. on the graph was "sample rate = 48000 samples 70" I'm guessing there were no other things to set on the front page. Guess I need Help with Fox-1A Software and IC910

Disappointing. I normally decode ARISS as well as local APRS. I heard the Voice ID gal very strongly, numerous times. The program was set to get audio from the SignaLink USB just as MixW and UISS are. Though they were no loaded. On the IC910, I set "9600" on then after a while OFF then switched it back again later. AO-85 heard in EM97

STRONG signal in EM97 at the VTGS. Managed to decode 5 frames. Saw a little bit of weirdness in doppler shift. BUT.......that might have been my gnuradio flowgraph mis-tuning (might need to check my plus/minus signs in the next 1.5 hours for the next pass). Other than looked good. Super pumped here, had two undergraduate students with me helping out (John KK4BSM, Harry KM4ICI). Thanks to those for the advice on piping sound into FoxTelem from GNU Radio. -Zach, KJ4QLP

20 degree pass here...but WOW, was it loud! It was so loud on the HT with Arrow antenna that I turned on the mobile rig in the truck and heard it ID very well twice with just a dual-band mobile Comet antenna Very well done! Philip N4HF
