Bummer, The azimuth pot on my 27 year old Yaesu 5400 is going out. I couldn't locate a parts source online or equivalent replacement. Still doing testing to determine extent of problem. Does Yaesu still sell parts for the 5400? KB7ADL

The biggest gotcha for ISSDector is that it is 100% dependent on a cell data connection. Even if you "preload" it, it will likely lose all predictions if you are offline. That being said, I still use it more than Look4Sat, but keep it around for when I go off grid. If any crewmember is so inclined, all they have to do is pick up the microphone, raise the volume up, and talk on the crossband repeater. So give a listen, you just never know. ####################################################################################################################################### Comments on making general contacts I have been seeing a lot of traffic on Facebook and I suspect on other social media sites with people asking why they are not hearing the crew make general contacts. First off the crew is very busy on the ISS and they simply may not have the time to just pick up the microphone and talk. Also, one needs to be aware of their normal daily schedule. I have listed below the constraints that we at ARISS have to follow in order to schedule the school contacts. Hopefully this will help you better schedule your opportunities. Typical daily schedule Wakeup to Workday start= 1.5 hours Workday start to Workday end=12 hours Workday end to Sleep= 2 hours Sleep to wakeup= 8.5 hours The crew's usual waking period is 0730 - 1930 UTC. The most common times to find a crew member making casual periods are about one hour after waking and before sleeping, when they have personal time. They're usually free most of the weekend, as well. SSTV events are not that often. So please check out https://www.ariss.org/ for the latest information or watch for the ARISS announcements. And don’t forget that the packet system is active. As always, if there is an EVA, a docking, or an undocking; the ARISS radios are turned off as part of the safety protocol. ARISSconducts 60-80 of these special amateur radio contacts each year betweenstudents around the globe and crew members with ham radio licenses aboard theISS. Escola Secundária de Lagoa (Lagoa Secondary School), S. Miguelisland at Azores – Portugal has more than 900 students, 120 teachers and about30 employees and serves students in 7th through 12th grades. Lagoa SecondarySchool’s Astronomy and Geocaching Club is hosting this ARISS contact involvinga core group of 11th and 12th grade students studying theScience Curriculum (Mathematics and Physics) and other students in the 10th,11th and 12th grades. In addition to the school’s STEM curriculum, students areengaged in astrophysics activities as members of the Astronomy and GeocachingClub. To further a deeper scientific engagement and literacy in the community,the school created the Project ISU (in search of the uncertain) that has themain purpose of putting forward space knowledge and know-how. Partnering organizationsinclude the national authority for communications in Portugal (ANACOM),providing facilities and expertise for the contact, the Science Center EXPOLABsupporting students’ activities related to space and rockets, the AstronomicalObservatory of Santana Açores providing a mobile planetarium and telescopes forsolar observation, and City Hall of Lagoa for logistical facilitation. This will be a telebridge Contact via Amateur Radio and students will take turnsasking their questions of Astronaut Josh Cassada, amateur radio call sign KI5CRH.The downlink frequency for this contact is 145.800 MHZ and may be heard bylisteners that are within the ISS-footprint that also encompasses thetelebridge station. The ARISS amateur radio ground station(telebridge station) for this contact is in Casale Monferrato, Italy. I've been using ISS Detector pro for years.It's accurate.When it starts beeping to tell me a satellite is about to be visible, you can count on it being there.One time, I was driving can in Ann arbor.It started beeping to let me know that the ISS was about to appear.So I mentioned it to my passenger.2 minutes later, it passed directly overhead.My passenger was impressed. I use ISS Detector. Excellent, full-featured app and I recommend it to everyone. I believe it costs $3 for all the ham satellites. I also use Look4Sat.
