*ARISS News Release No.24-64* *Dave Jordan, AA4KN * *ARISS PR* *aa4kn(a)amsat.org <aa4kn(a)amsat.org>* *FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE* *ARISS Contact is Scheduled with Students at * *Istituto Comprensivo “Elena Lucrezua Corner”, Fossò, Italy* October 15, 2024—Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) has received schedule confirmation for an ARISS radio contact between an astronaut aboard the International Space Station (ISS) and students at the Istituto Comprensivo “Elena Lucrezua Corner” located in Fossò, Italy. ARISS conducts 60-100 of these special amateur radio contacts each year between students around the globe and crew members with ham radio licenses aboard the ISS. Istituto Comprensivo “Elena Lucrezua Corner”, will engage secondary and primary level students (ages 6 to 14) during this ARISS contact. Students have been preparing by watching videos about life on the ISS, participating in the Mission AstroPi Zero challenges, and tracking the ISS in the nighttime sky. Amateur radio operators are supporting students with their studies in radio communications, SSTV, and ISS TV. This will be a direct contact via Amateur Radio allowing students to ask their questions of astronaut Sunita Williams, amateur radio call sign KD5PLB. The downlink frequency for this contact is 145.800 MHz and may be heard by listeners that are within the ISS-footprint that also encompasses the relay ground station. The amateur radio ground station for this contact is in Fossò, Italy. Amateur radio operators using call sign IQ3RW, will operate the ground station to establish and maintain the ISS connection. The ARISS radio contact is scheduled for October 18, 2024 at 11:09 am CEST (Fossò, Italy) (9:09 UTC, 5:09 am EDT, 4:09 am CDT, 3:09 am MDT, 2:09 am PDT). What was the strangest experiment that you have done? 15. Why haven't we gone back again to the Moon since 1972? 16. How do you prevent floating around while working on the ISS? 17. How many times have you been in space so far? 18. Did you discover any life forms in space? 19. Can animals be brought on the ISS? 20. First off the crew is very busy on the ISS and they simply may not have the time to just pick up the microphone and talk. Also, one needs to be aware of their normal daily schedule. I have listed below the constraints that we at ARISS have to follow in order to schedule the school contacts. Hopefully this will help you better schedule your opportunities. Typical daily schedule Wakeup to Workday start= 1.5 hours Workday start to Workday end=12 hours Workday end to Sleep= 2 hours Sleep to wakeup= 8.5 hours The crew's usual waking period is 07:30 – 19:30 UTC. The most common times to find a crew member making casual periods are about one hour after waking up and about an hour before sleeping, when they have personal time. They're usually free most of the weekend, as well. SSTV events are not that often. So please check out https://www.ariss.org/ for the latest information or watch for the ARISS announcements. And don’t forget that the packet system is sometimes active. Check the status at https://www.ariss.org/ or http://www.issfanclub.eu to see if the packet system is active or not. As always, if there is an EVA, a docking, or an undocking; the ARISS radios are turned off as part of the safety protocol. *ARISS News Release No. 24-55* *Dave Jordan, AA4KN * *ARISS PR* *aa4kn(a)amsat.org <aa4kn(a)amsat.org>* *FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE* *2 US Schools Moved Forward in ARISS Selection Process* Oct 15, 2024: Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) is pleased to announce the US schools/host organizations newly selected for 2025 ARISS contacts. A total of 2 of the submitted proposals during the recent proposal window have been accepted to move forward in the processes of planning to host a scheduled amateur radio contact with crew on the ISS. The primary goal of the ARISS program is to engage young people in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math (STEAM) activities and raise their awareness of space communications, radio communications, space exploration, and related areas of study and career possibilities. The ARISS program anticipates that NASA will be able to provide scheduling opportunities for the 2 US host organizations during the January - June 2025 time period. They are now at work starting to implement their 4–6-month education plan which was outlined in their proposal. These STEAM based educational activities help prepare students for their contact as well as create an on-going exploration and interest in aerospace and amateur radio topics. They are also completing an acceptable equipment plan that demonstrates their ability to execute the ham radio contact. Once their equipment plan is approved by ARISS, the final selected schools/organizations will be scheduled as their availability and flexibility match up with the scheduling opportunities offered by NASA. First off the crew is very busy on the ISS and they simply may not have the time to just pick up the microphone and talk. Also, one needs to be aware of their normal daily schedule. I have listed below the constraints that we at ARISS have to follow in order to schedule the school contacts. Hopefully this will help you better schedule your opportunities. Typical daily schedule Wakeup to Workday start= 1.5 hours Workday start to Workday end=12 hours Workday end to Sleep= 2 hours Sleep to wakeup= 8.5 hours The crew's usual waking period is 07:30 – 19:30 UTC. The most common times to find a crew member making casual periods are about one hour after waking up and about an hour before sleeping, when they have personal time. They're usually free most of the weekend, as well. SSTV events are not that often. So please check out https://www.ariss.org/ for the latest information or watch for the ARISS announcements. The transmission frequency will be 145.800 MHz FM, using SSTV mode PD120. The ISS callsign will be RS0ISS. The SSTV transmissions will be made using the station in the Russian ISS Service Module. The equipment used is a Kenwood D710 transceiver running about 25 watts output which provides a very strong signal enabling reception using simple equipment. Images received by amateurs world-wide during previous transmissions can be seen at http://www.spaceflightsoftware.com/ARISS_SSTV. Amateurs can receive the SSTV pictures directly from the space station by connecting the audio output of their two-meter transceiver via a simple interface to the soundcard on a Windows PC or an Apple iOS device. On Windows PC’s the free application MMSSTV can be used to decode the signal, on Apple iOS devices you can use the SSTV app for compatible modes. For Linux systems try QSSTV. The ISS puts out a strong signal so even a 2M handheld with a 1/4 wave antenna will be enough to receive it but one’s chances of success are significantly improved with the use of a handheld beam antenna. The FM transmission uses 5 kHz deviation which is standard in much of the world. Many FM rigs can be switched been wide and narrow deviation FM filters. For best results you should select the filter for wider deviation FM. Handhelds all seem to have a single wide filter fitted as standard. Some observations which may help others for better decodingI noticed during last pass (tele. 81 degrees, strong Rx) that: 1) To get the best Rx I had to switch polarisation often indicating that the bird is tumbling or spinning a lot, playing with polarisation from RHCP/DHCP does help a lot, 2) Slight adjustments using RIT also makes a difference, may be the Keps (using nasabare.txt/SatPC32).
