Comments on making general contacts
I have been seeing a lot of traffic on Facebook and I suspect on other social media sites with people asking why they are not hearing the crew make general contacts. First off the crew is very busy on the ISS and they simply may not have the time to just pick up the microphone and talk. Also, one needs to be aware of their normal daily schedule. I have listed below the constraints that we at ARISS have to follow in order to schedule the school contacts. Hopefully this will help you better schedule your opportunities.
Typical daily schedule
Wakeup to Workday start= 1.5 hours
Workday start to Workday end=12 hours
Workday end to Sleep= 2 hours
Sleep to wakeup= 8.5 hours
The crew's usual waking period is 07:30 – 19:30 UTC. The most common times to find a crew member making casual periods are about one hour after waking up and about an hour before sleeping, when they have personal time. They're usually free most of the weekend, as well.
SSTV events are not that often. So please check out https://www.ariss.org/ for the latest information or watch for the ARISS announcements.
And don’t forget that the packet system is sometimes active. Check the status at https://www.ariss.org/ or http://www.issfanclub.eu to see if the packet system is active or not.
As always, if there is an EVA, a docking, or an undocking; the ARISS radios are turned off as part of the safety protocol.

The next proposal window for US schools and educational organizations to host an Amateur Radio contact with a crew member on board the ISS opens July 8, 2024 for contacts to be scheduled for January 1, 2025 – June 30, 2025. *ARISS SSTV Event Scheduled for This Week*
October 8, 2024 — Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS)
announces an SSTV event to be held this week. The event is scheduled to
begin from 1415 UTC to 1600 UTC UTC on Tuesday, October 8. SSTV
transmissions will be paused from 0725 UTC to 1450 UTC on Friday the 11th
because of the multiple school contacts scheduled for that day. The
event shutdown
runs from 1410 UTC to 1420 UTC on Monday, October 14. Downlink
transmissions will be at 145.800 MHz and the mode is expected to be PD 120.
The transmissions will consist of 12 images developed by the students at
Southwest State University (SWSU) in Kursk, Russia.
Because the SSTV system has been brought back into operation after a year,
it is very important that the user community submit (via the

received images allowing ARISS to discern the quality of the system’s
operation.
ARISS invites you to use the *https://www.amsat.org/status/

the SSTV signal. It is very important to the operations team that the
community report that they are, or are not, hearing transmissions by using
the "ISS SSTV" pulldown in the "Submit Report" form below the status page.
The operations team view both the submitted images and at the reception
reports on the AMSAT site to give the on-orbit crew updates on how the
system is working.
If you are new to SSTV then take a look at the

Comments on making general contacts
I have been seeing a lot of traffic on Facebook and I suspect on other social media sites with people asking why they are not hearing the crew make general contacts. First off the crew is very busy on the ISS and they simply may not have the time to just pick up the microphone and talk. Also, one needs to be aware of their normal daily schedule. I have listed below the constraints that we at ARISS have to follow in order to schedule the school contacts. Hopefully this will help you better schedule your opportunities.
Typical daily schedule
Wakeup to Workday start= 1.5 hours
Workday start to Workday end=12 hours
Workday end to Sleep= 2 hours
Sleep to wakeup= 8.5 hours
The crew's usual waking period is 07:30 – 19:30 UTC. The most common times to find a crew member making casual periods are about one hour after waking up and about an hour before sleeping, when they have personal time. They're usually free most of the weekend, as well.
SSTV events are not that often. So please check out https://www.ariss.org/ for the latest information or watch for the ARISS announcements.

Comments on making general contacts
I have been seeing a lot of traffic on Facebook and I suspect on other social media sites with people asking why they are not hearing the crew make general contacts. First off the crew is very busy on the ISS and they simply may not have the time to just pick up the microphone and talk. Also, one needs to be aware of their normal daily schedule. I have listed below the constraints that we at ARISS have to follow in order to schedule the school contacts. Hopefully this will help you better schedule your opportunities.
Typical daily schedule
Wakeup to Workday start= 1.5 hours
Workday start to Workday end=12 hours
Workday end to Sleep= 2 hours
Sleep to wakeup= 8.5 hours
The crew's usual waking period is 07:30 – 19:30 UTC. The most common times to find a crew member making casual periods are about one hour after waking up and about an hour before sleeping, when they have personal time. They're usually free most of the weekend, as well.
SSTV events are not that often. So please check out https://www.ariss.org/ for the latest information or watch for the ARISS announcements.
And don’t forget that the packet system is sometimes active. Check the status at https://www.ariss.org/ or http://www.issfanclub.eu to see if the packet system is active or not.
As always, if there is an EVA, a docking, or an undocking; the ARISS radios are turned off as part of the safety protocol.

MESAT1 Designated MESAT1-OSCAR 122 (MO-122)
On July 4, 2024 at 04:04 UTC, the MESAT1 satellite was launched on a Firefly Alpha launch vehicle from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California. Developed by the University of Maine, the satellite carries an earth imaging experiment and an AMSAT-provided LTM-1 linear transponder to provide services to amateur radio enthusiasts around the world. The satellite has been commissioned and the transponder is currently active.

ARISS Slow Scan TV Transmissions Begin Tuesday
ARISS is planning a Slow Scan Television (SSTV) experiment from the International Space Station, scheduled to start on Tuesday, October 8, at 16:00 GMT and running until Monday, October 14, at 14:10 GMT.

There will be an interruption on Friday, October 11, for planned school contacts over Europe.
The transmission frequency will be 145.800 MHz FM, using SSTV mode PD120. The ISS callsign will be RS0ISS.
The SSTV transmissions will be made using the station in the Russian ISS Service Module. The equipment used is a Kenwood D710 transceiver running about 25 watts output which provides a very strong signal enabling reception using simple equipment. Images received by amateurs world-wide during previous transmissions can be seen at http://www.spaceflightsoftware.com/ARISS_SSTV.
Amateurs can receive the SSTV pictures directly from the space station by connecting the audio output of their two-meter transceiver via a simple interface to the soundcard on a Windows PC or an Apple iOS device. On Windows PC’s the free application MMSSTV can be used to decode the signal, on Apple iOS devices you can use the SSTV app for compatible modes. For Linux systems try QSSTV.
The ISS puts out a strong signal so even a 2M handheld with a 1/4 wave antenna will be enough to receive it but one's chances of success are significantly improved with the use of a handheld beam antenna. The FM transmission uses 5 kHz deviation which is standard in much of the world. Many FM rigs can be switched been wide and narrow deviation FM filters. For best results you should select the filter for wider deviation FM. Handhelds all seem to have a single wide filter fitted as standard.

SDRplay Announces the nRSP-ST Networked Receiver
SDRplay Limited has announced the imminent launch of the nRSP-ST, an all-in-one, plug-and-play networked SDR receiver. The nRSP-ST was demonstrated publicly for the first time at the UK National Hamfest this week.

Two Line Elements or TLEs, often referred to as Keplerian elements or keps in the amateur community, are the inputs to the SGP4 standard mathematical model of spacecraft orbits used by most amateur tracking programs. Weekly updates are completely adequate for most amateur satellites. TLE bulletin files are updated daily in the first hour of the UTC day. New bulletin files will be posted immediately after reliable elements become available for new amateur satellites. October 5, 2024—Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS)
has received schedule confirmation for an ARISS radio contact between an
astronaut aboard the International Space Station (ISS) and students at the
Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Agama (SMKA) Tengku Ampuan Hajjah Afzan Pahang
located in Kuala Lumpur West Malaysia. ARISS conducts 60-100 of these
special amateur radio contacts each year between students around the globe
and crew members with ham radio licenses aboard the ISS.
This ARISS contact coincides with the annual national event, World Space
Week, which was instituted in 2007 since Malaysian astronaut, Sheikh
Muszaphar Shukor, flew to the ISS October 10, 2007. This was accomplished
under an agreement between the governments of Malaysia and the Russian
Federation resulting in the development of the Angkasawan (Malaysian for
astronaut) Program to fly the first Malaysian citizen aboard the ISS. Shukor
spent nine days aboard the ISS conducting six life science experiments and
education demonstrations. This ARISS contact is supported by the National
Planetarium, Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, with ground
station support (9M2RPN).
This will be a direct contact via Amateur Radio allowing students to ask
their questions of astronaut Sunita Williams, amateur radio call sign
KD5PLB. The downlink frequency for this contact is 145.800 MHz and may be
heard by listeners that are within the ISS-footprint that also encompasses
the relay ground station.
The amateur radio ground station for this contact is in Kuala Lumpur,
Malaysia. Amateur radio operators using call sign 9M2RPN, will operate the
ground station to establish and maintain the ISS connection.
The ARISS radio contact is scheduled for October 7, 2024 at 7:58 pm MYT
(Kuala Lumpur) (11:58 UTC, 7:58 am EDT, 6:58 am CDT, 5:58 am MDT, 4:58 am
PDT).

Girlguiding Surrey West is a charity organization for girls and young
women. Girlguiding wants to inspire their members to learn skills in
science, technology, engineering and math with fun guiding activities and
science-based activities. The Brooklands Innovation Academy, established in
2022, creates inspirational STEM experiences for young people. The age
range of the participants for this ARISS contact are 5 to 19 years old. By
hosting this ARISS contact they are also demonstrating real-world
application of STEM concepts (an important principle at Brooklands Museum)
to space missions and are encouraging the girls to complete their space
interest badge. The group is being supported by the Radio Society of Great
Britain and the ARISS UK Team to establish the radio link.
Girlguiding patron, Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Edinburgh will attend
and take part in the ARISS contact to help in promoting the engagement and
involvement of girls and young women in STEM.
This will be a direct contact via Amateur Radio allowing students to ask
