Hello, I am looking how to substitute the trakbox because it won't work on the Kenwood TS-2000X Radio. Someone suggested me the SatPC32 software and before I buy it I am using it in unregistered mode to see how it works. As on the trakbox I have set about 20 satellites, I have noticed that in SatPC32 won't let me insert more then 8 satellites in the list. Is it possible to add more than 8 satellites? If yes where am I missing? This is my first time digipeating through it. I also tried to make my first APRS satellite contact. I successfully sent a message to the digipeater for another ham, KM4SYN, but he didn't receive it from the ISS. He did however receive one of my beacon packets and you can see me on his map. The "Programming TH-D72 for ISS Digipeater" video will be uploaded next week. I made this recording on November 2nd, 2016, shortly after the UHF digipeater was activated. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 12:31 UTC. It is recommended that you start listening approximately 10 minutes before this time. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be a telebridge between OR4ISS and IK1SLD. The contact should be audible over Italy and adjacent areas. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. Scuola Secondaria di Primo Grado "Niccolò Pisano" The Scuola Secondaria di Primo Grado (Middle School) "Niccolò Pisano" in Marina di Pisa (Pisa, Italy) consists of 3 sections (named A, B, C). Each section consists of 3 classes (1st, 2nd, 3rd), corresponding to student ages of 11 to 14. Each class consists of about 20 students. The school is part of the Istituto Comprensivo "Niccolò Pisano", which also includes another middle school in San Piero a Grado (Pisa, Italy), four primary schools (for ages 6 to 10) and two childhood schools. Geo Satellite 2017

I saw this video on the planned 5/10GHz planned launch with the geo payload through Virginia Tech. https://youtu.be/BE6ZZ3MQsNY I couldn't find much other details other than the video. Does anybody else here know the status on this satellite? I'm a student at New Mexico Tech, and would like to try to get something setup through our radio club as soon as this satellite is launched, so if this thing is for sure going to happen, I would like to start the search for equipment and have something going when this satellite is ready to be launched. 73, KD0WHB

>From Thursday afternoon I am going to visit work clients, I will be very close to the Lacandona jungle in the state of Chiapas, I will have free afternoons all weekend, I will be able to work from EK37 and EK47, trust in finding the line, try Work on other grids, work on FM and SSB satellites, SO-50, AO-85, XW-2A, XW-2B, XW-2C, AO-73 and FO-29. Hi! I don't normally write about an event I plan on attending where I represent AMSAT so far in advance, but I'm making an exception for this event. Even though it has been mentioned in recent AMSAT News Service bulletins, and listed on the AMSAT web site, there has been an attempt at misinformation on a web forum about this. To clear the air... AMSAT will be at the Palm Springs Hamfest in southern California on Saturday, 4 February 2017. Thanks to Rick Fearns and the Palm Springs Hamfest committee, AMSAT will have a booth at the hamfest. Along with a change in date (this had been held in mid-March for the past couple of years), the location has moved to the Palm Springs Air Museum along Gene Autry Trail, south of I-10 and near the Palm Springs Airport. More information about the hamfest is available at: http://palmspringshamfest.com/ I have been in contact with the hamfest committee, trying to get AMSAT listed on the hamfest's web site. Hopefully that will be rectified shortly. OMOTENASHI UHF operation from the moon

OMOTENASHI(Outstanding Moon exploration Technologies demonstrated by Nano Semi-Hard Impactor) which is spacecraft by JAXA will UHF operation from the moon. OMOTENASHI is one of the CubeSats which will be carryied on NASA's new SLS(Space Launch System) EM-1(Exploration Mission 1). The launch is expected on 31th July 2018. OMOTENASHI, 6U CubeSat consists of Orbiting module and Surface probe. Orbiting module and Surface probe will separate on the moon orbit and Surface probe will land on the moon. Newbie Question on Active Satellites

Please pardon the newbie question, but I’m trying to get active on the birds again during the holidays after being off the air for well over a year. During that time, several new birds have been launched. It’s hard to keep up—and made more difficult because each satellite has multiple designations (names.) Depending on the application that you’re using, such as SatPC32, you may not find the satellite using the name listed on one of the sites designed to keep us all abreast of current activity. Adding to the confusion, many web sites list birds that are technically active (such as in beacon mode, or downloading telemetry) but not available for amateur use. Can someone provide a short list of the current active satellites for both FM and SSB/CW available for amateur use? I’d be most grateful. I need some help with SatPC32. I have been using it for some time (over a year) with no problems but now it is looking for a serial port I don't have. I am using a Yaesu G-5500 rotor which should be on port 10 but it some how got changed to port 13. I tried to access the help for Yaesu rotors (? - hints - rotor - Yaesu g-232) but it won't open. Mir SSTV 18th Anniversary

Today, December 12, 2016, marks the 18th anniversary of the activation of the MIR SSTV Amateur Radio developed System which was transported and put aboard the MIR Space Station. The MIR SSTV System sent pictures over a period of about 2 years and 4 months to the delight of Amateur Radio Operators and others worldwide. A satellite transponder is a shared resource

There is a finite amount of shared satellite downlink power available for users of a linear transponder. When someone is operating CW and fails to adjust their power appropriately, everyone suffers. I made this recording today: https://soundcloud.com/w5pfg/fo-29-20161210-1805z-aa5pk-dl98-qro-cw Glenn, AA5PK was operating portable from the USA/Mexico border in grid square DL98. Using an Icom IC-910 and Arrow antenna, you could tell he was perfectly readable yet in his voice you could detect very strong CW elsewhere on the satellite passband. Often there are portable stations running 5 watts with their Arrow antennas. Please, please reduce your CW power. If you are operating CW to overcome hearing deficiencies at your station,please consider making station improvements rather than taking more of the transponder's limited power for yourself. 73 Clayton W5PFG

December 11, 2016 To All RADIO AMATEURS BID: $ANS-346.01 New Satellites on the Horizon Recent International Amateur Radio Union satellite coordination requests provide new details on several satellites expected to launch before the end of the first quarter of 2017. The first satellite expected to launch is UBAKUSAT. UBAKUSAT, developed by Istanbul Technical University along with TAMSAT, GUMUSH, and ERTEK Ltd. is a 3U CubeSat with a Mode V/u inverting linear transponder, CW beacon, and a digital telemetry downlink. The transponder downlink frequencies will be 435.200 MHz – 435.250 MHz with an uplink of 145.940 MHz – 145.990 MHz. The CW beacon frequency will be 437.225 MHz and the digital telemetry downlink will be 437.325 MHz. UBAKUSAT will be delivered to the International Space Station aboard the JAXA HTV-6 resupply mission, scheduled for launch on December 9, 2016, for future deployment. The mission is expected to last 6-12 months. On December 26, 2016, the China Center for Aerospace Science and Technology’s BY70-1 satellite is expected to launch from Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center into a 530 km sun-synchronous orbit. The satellite, a 3-axis stabilized 2U CubeSat with deployable solar panels, will carry a Mode V/u FM transponder with an uplink frequency of 145.920 MHz and a downlink frequency of 436.200 MHz. On March 31, 2017, two satellites from the Chinese Amateur Satellite Group (CAMSAT) are expected to launch from Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center into a 524 km orbit with an inclination of 42 degrees. The two satellites, CAS-4A and CAS-4B, will be 50 kg mass with 3-axis stabilization carrying optical remote sensing missions. The amateur radio payloads will be similar to the XW-2 series of satellites with Mode U/v linear transponders with power output of 100 mW, 100 mW AX.25 4800 baud GMSK telemetry, and 50 mW CW beacons. Frequencies for these two satellites have not yet been coordinated. In addition to these satellites, AMSAT’s Fox-1Cliff, Fox-1D, and RadFxSat (Fox-1B) satellites carrying Mode U/v FM transponders are all expected to launch in the first half of 2017. Nayif-1, from the Emirates Institution for Advanced Science and Technology (EIAST) and American Univeristy of Sharjah (AUS) carrying a FUNcube Mode U/v linear transponder and telemetry downlink, as well as the U. S. Naval Academy Satellite Lab’s QIKcom-2, PSAT-2, and BRICSAT-2 satellites carrying two-way amateur radio payloads are all expected to launch in the first half of 2017. Es’Hail-2, a geostationary satellite carrying AMSAT-DL’s Phase 4A payload is scheduled to launch in the third quarter of 2017. AMSAT’s RadFxSat-2 (Fox-1E) satellite carrying a Mode V/u linear transponder may also launch in late 2017. The "Buddies of the Caribbean", operators Tom/K4ZGB, Bryan/N8WD, Rick/AA4W and Robert/KE4AL, will be active as WP2/K4ZGB, KP2/N8WD, KP2/AA4W and KP2/KE4AL, respectively, from Saint Croix Island (NA-106) between December 6-14th. They will also be operating from his station and will have a station in the ARRL 10 meter Contest, NPOTA (Salt River Bay, Christiansted, and Buck Island), QRP, and beach operations will also take place. It's the data link layer protocol we've chosen, and therefore binds the universe together. It's efficient and low latency. It allows us to carry packet protocols like IP, ethernet, or whatever through our system. There are several addressing modes and it enables adapative coding and modulation. You can do hardware filtering with it and you can add other link protocols by extension. There are no built-in integrity checks in GSE. That's left up to the physical layer to do. We are confident that the physical layer is up to the job. GSE is also used in the terrestrial version of the protocol, DVB-T2. You've heard less about this but it's what we're going to use for terrestrial radio modes. Sharing GSE function between all modes makes for a more consistent design and a bit less work. The testing continues with GSE using the Ayecka SR1 and SR1 Pro. These are DVB-S2 receivers that claim to do GSE. Three of us purchased the SR1 in anticipation that it would do GSE out of the box and be either a good test equipment choice or possibly one of the many recipes for a Phase 4 Ground radio or both. However, GSE is, if you hunt hard enough, listed as an option that requires another $220 to unlock. And, Ayecka wants to upgrade your receiver remotely, which could be a problem in some IT situations. Dr. MPEG's early results seem to indicate that there are some bugs in Ayecka's SR1 GSE implementation. That's just further evidence of our early adopter status. Yay us! We were of course disappointed to find out that GSE was an extra cost option, and nobody like to run into bugs, but kudos to the Ayecka folks for being very responsive with fixes for the GSE issues we've reported. "Just say no to HLS" We are soliciting opinions about HLS from Xilinx. This is High-Level Synthesis and is part of the Vivado design environment. It allows C, C++ and System C specifications to be directly targeted into Xilinx All Programmable devices without the need to manually create RTL. Sounds like magic, doesn't it? An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Maristes High School, Toulouse, France on 12 Dec. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 13:29 UTC. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in French. The MARISTES TOULOUSE: Collegians living the dream with Thomas PESQUET. Toulouse is a city which is situated in the south of France right at the heart of the department of Haute Garonne in the Occitania region. Built around the Garonne River which flows through the heart of the city, Toulouse was the theatre for many notable historical events such as the crusades led by the French Kings against the heretic Cathares during the middle ages. The county of Toulouse was annexed to the French realm at the end of the 13th century. Today this metropolis and French capital of Aeronautics and Aerospace is home to such prestigious establishments as the Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales (CNES) but also such industrial giants as TAS (Thales Alenia Space) and ADS (Airbus Defence and Space). The famous City de l'Espace, a scientifically oriented theme park, specifically geared towards the discovery, exploration and the development of space travel is one of the many tourist attractions appreciated by visitors to the city. The College-Lycée Les Maristes Toulouse has been situated in the Montaudran neighbourhood since 2012. The school was built just next to the site of the Montaudran runway. The self-same runway from which the planes of the Aerospatiale, flown by the pioneers of civil aviation such as Jean Mermoz, Henri Guillaumet, Paul Vachet ou Antoine de Saint Exupéry, took off at the beginning of the 20th century. Over the past three years, the college has been working in partnership with the CNES on the project « Mission eXplore : Je m'entraîne comme un astronaute » involving both the Physical Education and Biology programs. The goal of this project, created by the NASA in 2011, is to give youngsters an insight into life in outer space. Sorry to learn of Robin's untimely passing. I was executive vice president when he was president, which also entailed my being acting president during the loss and subsequent partial recovery of AO -40. He and I didn't always agree, but I was in a position to see the many ways in which AMSAT benefited from his wisdom and strong leadership. He was instrumental in building the close relationship that now exists between AMSAT and IARU, as well as in guiding the organization through the difficult times that followed AO-40. Problems With SATPC32

I am trying the SATPC32 version 12.8c, but I have some problems that I would like to comment on and hope for help. 1.- I have an interface provided for a few days for the FT-847, when starting SATPC32 is put into CAT mode and puts the frequencies of the selected satellite on the radio. When the satellite Doppler does not start in the VFO's of the radio. 2.- I create a group of satellites or a list, to re-start SATPC32 that list is no longer a priority, I have to re-open it in the foreground or view. 3.- I configured the Rotor G5500 with YAESU GS_232 interface, and the rotor does not work, I revise Setup_Rotor and I see that interface change only, it returns by default to the DDE interface. Ukube 1 is a wicked good bird with a very sensitive receiver that allows you to maintain a QSO with a watt or less ,and has a very good transmitter.I can certainly put up with the thing desensing it's own receiver for a few Seconds every few minutes.Sure appreciate having another great satellite ! jeff broughton

The Russian Woodpecker

Those who remember the Russian Woodpecker that could decimate the Amateur Radio Bands back in the 1980’s might be interested to know there is a new Film on NETFIX called “The Russian Woodpecker”! I thought it was some kind of spy thriller, but I got it on DVD and it turned out to be a documentary with English subtitiles. Wife got bored, but I wateched every word. I had never seen the pictures of it, but here is a guy climbing all over the abandoned antenna and making a documentary. I never knew that the Woodpecker HUGE HF beam array was right on the same property as the Chernobly Nuke plant! I didn’t see this coming. But the theory of the documentary is that the Chernoybl nuke plant disaster was traceable to “the failure” of the Woodpecker system to work as promised and so the nuke disaster was an attempt by a Moscow Bureaucrat to cause a “situation” at the nuke plant on that fateful day to cause enough of a problem to cause the big INSPECTION of the Woodpecker next door secheduled that same week, to be canceled… to hide their bureaucratic failure to work as promised. It was made by a Ukranian in brash defiance of the Russians, so there is an agenda here… Very interesting…. As conspiracy theories go… but also scary when you see the same kind of lies and deception in politicians today that was going on then too. Bob, Wb4APR

Hi David, RT Systems provides a cable that will allow CAT control with Ham Radio deluxe or other programs. As I recall, the 847 needs a null modem cable, NOT a straight thru. A Little Help Please

I am trying to install equipment for packet communication through ISS. I thought that UISS software worked with EITHER a software modem OR a TNC, but reading (at least starting to read) the 75 page manual, apparently it does not. Since it does not, please suggest another terminal program or APRS/Packet specific program. My approach for the hardware is an old MFJ-1270C TNC. I'm trying to learn its ins and outs from its 287 page outdated manual. GROINK Additionally, I have a cable ordered with modular end for my radio (IC-2730). Any advise or Elmer-ing will be highly appreciated. It has been over ten years since I had any experience with packet or APRS. I was very saddened to learn of the passing away of Robin Haighton ( VE3FRH) I had the great pleasure of meeting Robin in the year 2001 during a visit to the UK for the Amsat Colloquium, He had relatives over here as his wife had lived in the village of Rhoose, Vale of Glamorgan, South Wales - Not to far away from my own QTH. Along with some other colleagues we great pleasure in talking to him and one of the subjects was ARISS School Contacts When Robin returned home he very kindly (at his own expense ) sent me a CD containing a video recording of the ISS link up with "KC0PCH " ( Parkway Central high School ). I was able to show this to many other interested parties and youngsters and it really pioneered the way forward for our hobby. My most of those in the video have matured and grown up - I am sure many will still remember the experience. Many thanks Robin - a very nice and respected person. - RIP. I mean when both up- and downlink are in the same band, or same freq, just correcting for dopplershift. So far I have not found anything in the manual. Dead LVB tracker board. Good ADC AZ and EL. Took a lightening strike. Shot the bug down to the serial port. No output. Is it the uC or the line driver? I'll include a direct cross for the latter. Lucky recipient will have the pleasure of crossing his or her fingers and powering up. Any 16x2 44870 compatible display will work. NO LCD, CASE OR BUTTONS. These had a higher calling. Parking the rig and the antennas

Hi. Maybe it's here somewhere but I'll take the chance to ask .... Has anyone using SatPc32 found a way to park the rig and antennas after each pass? I want to set my antennas pointing 225, zero elevation and the rig on 145.600. I did try to make a fake satellite with no result. Earlier, when I used Uni-trac I had a satellte called "park" that did this job. 73, Paul LB2TG

Just received two brand new FT-817 from HRO.when one is on high power the power bargraph flashes ,when the other oNE is on high power the power bargraph is gone.verified high power with a peak reading bird with a 5 watt slug. Almost like 2 diferent firmwares . Anybody else experience this ? I did see a posting on a ft 817 users group that I am not the only one that has experienced this .thanks.jeff wb8rjy jeff broughton

AMSAT will have a booth with the latest in AMSAT swag, including Getting Started on the Amateur Satellites book. Yaesu G-5500 Control Box Problem

...and suddently, the analogue display of the Yaesu G-5500 (Elev / Azim)...I mean the needles stopped moving. Neither the Elevation nor the Azimuth needles are moving at all but the rotor is working when tracking with SatPC32 / LVB. Any hints on repairs are / will be appreciated. Below is a request by Quirino, 6jzh. Quirino is an older person using an older program (probably DOS) called SATSKED, but he is having trouble updating the Keplerian elements. If you are familiar with this program could you help Quirino? I am not familiar with this program and I can't find anyone who has used SATSKED. I see a reference on www.amsat.org in the satellite software area under MS-DOS programs, Pacsat Programs, but I can't download any data from the link. Robin suffered a debilitating stroke earlier in this last week, was admitted to the hospital and became a silent key on the morning of December 2nd. Robin was a Past Executive Vice President, a past President and a long-time member of the Board of Directors for AMSAT-North America (AMSAT-NA). Over the years, Frank remained a strong Canadian voice for the organization. For example, as a founding member of the Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) project, Robin served as one of two international delegates from Canada. Frank Bauer, KA3HDO, ARISS's International Chairperson said that he and Robin..."had a unique perspective and relationship that was very much appreciated". Frank went on to note: "Robin contributed significantly to ARISS through his ideas, guidance and wise counsel. He challenged members of our team to look at things in a different perspective. As a result of his sage advice, we were able work through these issues and arrive at a common approach, both in developing and delivering ARISS hardware as well as supporting the technical mentoring of schools and local hams." I first became fully aware of Robin's many leadership talents in the mid-1990s when I was then AMSAT's Executive Vice President. In 1997, Robin hosted our AMSAT Board of Directors meeting and Space Symposium in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, one of the first (if not THE first) time that meeting was held outside of the USA. At about that same time, Robin stepped up to the plate to also become AMSAT's Canadian Liaison, working a number of AMSAT issues north of the US/Canadian border. Most notably, Robin was instrumental in coordinating AMSAT's consultant role with the Canadian MOST (Microvariability and Oscillations of STars) satellite project. Through his tireless, "hands on" efforts with the satellite's Canadian builders, AMSAT was able to bring critical analysis and mentoring skills to bear the project which also garnered a large monetary donation to AMSAT as a result. MOST was successfully launched in 2003 and satellite remains on orbit (and largely operational) to this day. Throughout my time as President, and then later when we switched roles and I once again became Executive Vice President when he went on to become AMSAT's President in 2000, I always sought out and very much appreciated his wise counsel. During his time as our AMSAT President and BOD member, Frank helped to successfully guide the organization through the launch and subsequent anomalies with the Phase 3-D satellite (which later became AMSAT-OSCAR 40 (AO- 40)) on orbit. He was also instrumental in the birth, development and launch of AMSAT-NA's AO-51 satellite. During its long lifetime, AO-51 became one of the most popular (if not THE most popular) of the so-called "easy-sats", providing countless newcomers (and others) with an introduction to our wonderful world of amateur radio satellites. Needless to say, his legacy will live on, both within the hearts and minds of children and family members that experience ARISS, as well as those of us who served with him during his many years as a senior officer of AMSAT. At press time, funeral arrangements for Robin were pending, but that information will be passed along just as soon as it becomes known. The satellite will be sent to the ISS inside the TuPOD TubeSat deployer onboard JAXA’s KOUNOTORI6 cargo ship (HTV-6 mission). The TuPOD is expected to be ejected into space by the J-SSOD satellite deployer on December 19th and on December 21st, Tancredo-1 is expected to be finally ejected from the TuPOD into space. Once in space, Tancredo-1 will start transmitting telemetry data. Tancredo-1 is the first satellite of the Ubatubasat project, a STEM project idealized by Prof. Cândido Oswaldo de Moura at Escola Municipal Tancredo Neves public school in Ubatuba, state of Sao Paulo, Brazil. The project is supported by the Brazilian Institute for Space Research (INPE) and the Brazilian Space Agency (AEB). Tancredo-1 will initially have the same orbit as the ISS, but it will slowly drift with time and will eventually reenter in the atmosphere and burn. Robert Brand VK2URB, of Thunderstruck Aerospace, reports that it is an essential part of a project to develop the Mars Nano-Lander and Methane detection system called MEDIAN, set to land in 2025. Approval will be sought from the Australian Civil Aviation Safety Authority for use of the air space for the test. The project calls for 10 separate penetrators to be ejected from the jettisoned heat shield at about 6km from the surface of Mars. They are to spear into the surface of Mars and form a ring about 8km wide. The radio systems will begin measuring distance between the other landers and map the network. Robert VK2URB says they will then switch to a random packet mode and begin sending messages to an orbiting craft. Even the orientation of each probe covering an area around the size of a small city, will be detected and used to calculate the direction that wind, and hopefully any methane, on the thin Martian atmosphere. Robert VK2URB says that the audacious mission is a joint project with the UK Methane detection group at the University of Central Lancashire, and the Australian Thunderstruck Aerospace team. Robert is the design architect of the landing system, the mapping, orientation, communications, data relay, and the on-going non-methane science package. He says that never before has a network of probes been landed anywhere outside of earth and have impactors with the intention of surviving the process. The possibility of microbial life on Mars has been discussed by scientists since the presence of methane gas on the red planet was found several years ago. MEDIAN will map possible methane vent locations for a rover to investigate. If the rover fails to land, the project will still relay local weather and subsoil information back to earth. It's expected that the tests in Central Australia will demonstrate the essential role that radio will play in mapping, locating, orienting the network and then relaying data around the network. The tests will involve dropping a simulated heat shield from 3km altitude and having the impactors fire at 2.5km feet to simulate the impact that each would have on Mars. Even the orientation of each probe will be detected and used to calculate the direction that wind is coming from in the thin Martian atmosphere. The penetrators will stay vertical and elevate the science and radio package about a meter off the surface allowing for better radio connectivity and clear wind profile. A meter diameter solar panel will provide adequate power and the network is expected to survive for at least six months on Mars relaying weather and sub-surface information. An expected seven of the 10 spikes will survive the impact. Ham radio will provide essential communications for the tests and for the event. It is hoped a special event around the testing will attract the interests of ham operators worldwide, and focus attention of the role that Australia is playing in Space Missions. As the satellite is powered solely by the now 42 year-old solar panels, it is very sensitive to strong uplink signals, particularly CW. With the move to 70cm, this means users of the packet digipeater will have to make adjustments for Doppler on both the uplink and downlink. Even with the change in frequency, the digipeater operates exactly as it did on 145.825 MHz. For HTs or FM mobile transceivers, and possibly other radios capable of operating on 70cm FM, programming a group of 5 memory channels which compensate for Doppler will allow for 70cm packet operation. Use the following group of memory channels for the ISS packet digipeater on 437.550 MHz: Channel Receive (MHz) Transmit (MHz) Offset 1 437.560 437.540 -0.02 MHz 2 437.555 437.545 -0.01 MHz 3 437.550 437.550 (no offset, simplex) 4 437.545 437.555 +0.01 MHz 5 437.540 437.560 +0.02 MHz Memory channels in some radios will accept separate receive and transmit frequencies, while others will accept the receive frequency and the offset size/direction. There could be moments near AOS and LOS - and maybe other points in the middle - where the signal is just in between the two RX frequencies, and your TNC or software won't decode it. Known by its initials SDR, it is a software way of creating a receiver and transmitter. During the workshop which included two videos introducing the SDR concept, the two speakers created a two metre to 70cm FM repeater using a dongle and a Raspberry Pi. Kenwood ACC 1 connector and connections

Hi folks, till a month ago I 've used the Kenwood TS-790E with a Trakbox attached to it via the ACC1 connector. I have passed to a Kenwood TS-2000X and have noticed that the ACC1 connector is not present on This radio so now I am stuck how to connect the trakbox to it for the satellite Doppler correction. Has anyone used my same setup and can tell me how to make the cable between the Radio and the Trakbox? I have also tried to look the TS-790E manual but it does not say about the connections pin. The first part is the header built by your packet modem or software showin your SENDING call, the destination address of APRS and the VIA path of ARISS. The body of the packet must begin with :EMAIL....: Which tells APRS it is a "message format. The extra 4 dots shoule be spaces to pad the message address field out to a total of 9 characters. Then immediately following that is the body of an APRS message. In this case, to have it become email, you have to begin the message with the FIRST "word" being the complete email address. In the example, I wrote that as UREMAIL@WHATEVER>WHATEVER And then after a space to separate it, is your actual text of your email. All of this is in one packet, and the sum total of the length of y our email address and the text of yoru email must fit in the APRS message size of I think it is 67 bytes. CAVEAT: All of the above assumes the ISS is on 145.825 MHz (I think it is not. I think It is now on 437.550 MHz which requires you to track Doppler in a complicated fashion stepping up in transmit frequency while at the same time stepping down in frequency for receive during the pass. Also it assumes the global APRS "EMAIL" engine is on line and working... ALSO it assumes the ISS digipeater address is still working as ARISS. If not, you may have to use the actual call of RS0ISS if that is what it is. Search for APRS EMAIL and you should be able to find something. Bob, WB4APR

All I have is a CHIRP-generated .chirp file and its associated .csv file for the Baofeng ‘5R that I programmed for a friend … I believe CHIRP is “powerful” enough to IMPORT the CSV file for other Baofeng units. It has AO-85, new-and-old ISS packet (the suggested 5-freq set for the current 440 packet), SO-50, ISS 2M voice for the regions, the six NOAA freqs, and the national simplex freqs. I'm a software engineer that works with a bunch of electrical engineers on some radar stuff. So I've been interested in learning more about the electronics, signal processing and related matters. I'm also interested in and fairly knowledgeable about orbital things already, so it seems like amsats are a natural fit. I studied up and recently got my General, but I have basically no equipment other than some SDR dongles and a Baofeng. I did manage to cobble together a yagi that let me pull down both voice and data from a couple satellites, by waving the antenna around in what I hoped was the right direction. (I printed out the pass, but didn't and still don't have a reliable way of tracking.) What I want to do next is basically email myself over RF via space. I know there's some store-and-forward sats, but that's about it. I'd prefer to have an antenna that wouldn't need to track. I can limit myself to passes over X deg (say 30) to get short ranges that don't need high gain. But maybe the pass lengths won't be long enough to send and receive in that time? What I'm really looking for is tutorials. It's pretty easy to find ones aimed at hams who don't know anything about satellites or computers. It's hard to find ones for computer- and space-savvy people who don't have a lot of practical experience with xmit/rcv.

While it goes without saying that nobody would want to wear a diaper for a week, the issue is more than a matter of cleanliness, it's a matter of life or death. Hi! I will have an AMSAT booth at the Superstition Amateur Radio Club's "Superstition Superfest" hamfest on Saturday morning, 3 December 2016. The hamfest will be at Mesa Community College, between Southern Avenue and US-60 exit 177 along Dobson Road in Mesa, Arizona. The hamfest is normally in the southwest parking lot along Dobson Road, next to the US-60 freeway. The hamfest officially starts at 8am (1500 UTC), but I am sure there will be buyers and sellers out there at least a couple of hours before that time. CAS-2T & HO68 Beacon Report

Some are reporting hearing the beacon of CAS-2T, however, I had not been hearing it for the past few days. Yesterday I set it on the Beacon Frequency and waited without tuning around. Sure enough it was eventually heard, but not in a continuous stream. It would send "CE" and then go silent for a while. Then it would send "CASS" and go silent, maybe for a minute or two before sending "CE" again. No response on the voice repeater frequency. In the past it had stuttered when activated. The HO-68 beacon was heard on frequency sending the data but often times it would stop sending in the middle of the data group. It would go off for some time and then come back sending a few characters before going off again. The beacon frequency has been absolutely stable for years. Chinese Radios

It is my perception that some portable operators are using these Chinese HT's (specifically BaoFeng) along with their Arrow Antennas. Maybe that I am wrong. Which model is being used, if that is so. EM50/51 activation this Thursday

Myself and another operator from our club are making a trip to Pensacola this Thursday and Friday to activate Gulf Islands National Seashore for NPOTA, in EM60. While we are in the area, Thursday evening (12/01) we are going to make an excursion into MS to operate sats from EM50 and 51. If I can find a spot, I'll try and be on the 51/50 line. The current plan is to get there around 2200z and operate several linear passes, staying around until the 0200z SO-50 pass to cover the FM only guys. EM51/50 is the primary grid goal this trip, along with the HF park activation. Hi! I don't have a KG file to share, but those should not be shared between radios anyway. Those files are not like the config files used in the "normal" ham radios like you get from Icom, Kenwood, and Yaesu. But I can offer some suggestions and advice... The KG-UV8D is not capable of working SO-50 full-duplex. When you transmit on 2m, the 70cm receiver is desensed. You won't hear the satellite again until you stop transmitting. The radio is capable of working AO-85 full-duplex. I wrote about this on the AMSAT-BB list a year ago, and you can see that message at: http://amsat.org/pipermail/amsat-bb/2015-November/056254.html I do not use memory channels for working AO-85. I use the two VFOs, open the squelch all the way for the receive VFO, and transmit from the other VFO. That link has some key settings I used with that radio. You can program a group of memory channels to work SO-50 half- duplex. A guide for that is available from AMSAT's Station and Operating Hints page at: http://www.amsat.org/?page_id=2144 (look for the document "Operating FM Satellites") Or use another HT with your KG-UV8D, so you can transmit from one radio while listening to the other radio for full-duplex operation. If you want to use an HT to work both AO-85 and SO-50 full-duplex, there is only one option currently in production: Kenwood TH-D72A. The new TH-D74A is not capable of full-duplex operation for any FM satellite. Wouxun's KG-UV9D, like the KG-UV8D, is capable of working AO-85 full-duplex, but not SO-50. Along with the KG-UV8D, I wrote about a few other Chinese-made HTs and tried using them to work FM satellites full-duplex. They could do that with AO-85, but not SO-50.
